# One bowl of stacked dishes costs 19 USD: SenseTime open-sourced an embodied framework riding the GPT-6 Astra hype. How did it get 450 stars

**What it is** An open-source runtime that lets a large model act as a robot's brain: a dozen-plus robot simulation leaderboards packaged in Docker, with a unified interface, evaluable with one command, and an agent that automatically improves from failure logs, paired with a 27B model.

**Why it blew up** It piggybacked on the hot debate over whether GPT-6 Astra can control robots, with an evaluation report under a question-style title. The report hit #1 on Hugging Face's daily papers; the next day Chinese finance media covered it at the same time with "cost cut to 1/50"; then it released code in five batches to keep the momentum going.

**C** **How you can ride it** Don't head-on build another embodied framework; copy the playbook: once a new large model launches, quickly publish a serious evaluation, use a question as the title, open-source the Docker-packaged eval code, release it in batches with an update each time, and recruit influential researchers in the field to amplify it.

C grade: its stars came mainly from the report's topic, the Hugging Face #1 paper slot, and SenseTime's PR, which followers can't access. The embodied-AI circle is small, and these resources together only brought in 450 stars, while a resource list on the same topic would have gotten more. The playbook is worth learning, but building another framework like it isn't worth it. Circulating in small circles

The SenseNova team wrote an evaluation report asking "does GPT-6 Astra have embodied intelligence?" and open-sourced a framework called SenseNova-RoboRSI, packaging a dozen-plus robot simulation leaderboards into Docker, evaluable with one command. It got 450 stars in 28 days, with the peak falling on the day after the paper hit #1 on Hugging Face and Chinese finance media ran coverage together. The stars came mainly from the report's topic and big-company PR, which followers can't borrow; the transferable part is the playbook: "run a question-titled evaluation on the hottest model, then open-source a framework to catch the traffic."

### One bowl of stacked dishes, 131 minutes

The most memorable numbers in the report are clearest in the long piece on 36氪 11-06: having GPT-6 Astra directly control a robot to stack one bowl takes 131 minutes on average, with inference costs around 19 USD; putting a pen into a pen holder averages 263 minutes and about 55 USD.

The report's conclusion has two halves: "Embodied capability is largely there; practical embodied intelligence is not yet." With steps relaxed to 10× and the model allowed to look at the training set first, Astra nears perfect scores on simulation leaderboards like LIBERO and SIMPLE, and RoboDojo success reaches 81.9% (only 27.6% at standard step counts). The cost is slowness and expense: one LIBERO-Long++ episode takes roughly 1M tokens and nearly an hour.

SenseTime's answer: on the same task, using its open-source framework with its own 27B model cuts the cost to 1/50 of what calling Astra directly costs. That "1/50" line was then quoted nearly word for word by almost every outlet. 3636Kr also pointed out that SenseTime ran the test itself, only on specific tasks like stacking bowls and putting away pens, and no third party has re-run it yet.

### What it is

A runtime for using LLMs as robot brains, which its author calls Harness. Models, prompts, skills, and tools (including MCP) plug in, and it runs and scores on different simulation leaderboards under each board's own rules. Each leaderboard and its dependencies are packed into a Docker image behind one unified HTTP interface. Write one config file and you can run an end-to-end evaluation, without installing each simulator by hand. Anyone who has done embodied research knows environment setup is the biggest time sink.

On top of that sits RSI (recursive self-improvement): it uses execution traces and failure feedback to modify the Harness itself, such as how planning is organized, how feedback is handled, and how memory is stored, without touching model weights. Each change is re-tested under the same conditions, and only the ones that work move to the next version. The validated experience is then used to train a 27B model (based on Qwen3.8-27B, with 10-22 releasing the weights, downloadable from Hugging Face as 317,11-06).

Python, Apache-2.0. The README itself labels it Pre-Alpha. The repo description still says "Code release coming soon," even though the code for each leaderboard has already been released in five batches.

### When the stars came

| Date | star | What happened that day |
|---|---|---|
| 10-09 | — | Repo created. README announces RoboDojo score of 60.08, 31 points above the Astra baseline |
| 10-16 | — | Report published, first batch of code (LIBERO series) released |
| 10-19 | 73 | Paper hit #1 on Hugging Face Daily Papers that day (11-06 with 135 upvotes) |
| 10-20 | 142 | **+69 in a single day, the biggest day** . Sina Finance, Tencent, Phoenix, Economic Observer, and China Daily all ran stories the same day reporting "cost down to 1/50" |
| 10-21 to 10-23 | 244 | +26 to +48 per day; 10-22 releases 27B weights |
| 10-25 | 268 | NTU's Liu Ziwei (co-author on the paper) reposts on X |
| 10-26 to 10-27 | 288 | README announces #1 on NVIDIA RoboLab and #1 on LIBERO-PRO on Papers With Code |
| 10-28 to 11-04 | 383 | 10-30 and 11-03 release two more batches of code, +3 to +25 per day |
| 11-05 to 11-06 | 450 | +45 and +22, sources unverified; 11-06 36 36氪 publishes a long feature |

Data: GitHub daily stars / forks (from 10-17), and the update log in the README.

You can see two phases. The first is a spike: #1 on the paper page plus press releases pushed it up about 120 in three days. The second is slow growth: code gets released batch by batch, and every three or four days the README gains a new "leaderboard code" or "#1 on a leaderboard" entry, with stars creeping up behind it. Forks went from 10-27 to 10 to 11-06 to 33, mostly after code releases, which suggests people are starting to actually run it.

Searching the name on X turns up almost no discussion in the last 30 days, and I found no dedicated Hacker News or Reddit threads. It spread through small embodied-AI research circles, and big-company PR pushed it into Chinese media.

### Why this one

**It answered a question the industry is already arguing about.** OpenAI released GPT-6 Astra in September, and the next day someone tested it controlling a real robot arm. "Can an LLM act directly as a robot policy?" has been debated for a month. At the same time, Awesome-Astra-Embodied-AI, a plain resource list, got 1,234 stars, far more than this framework. The topic itself draws more traffic than any single framework.

**The report got seen before the repo did.** The report title is a question, and its conclusion is "half yes, half no," which makes it easy to repost. The Hugging Face paper page links straight to GitHub, and the day it hit #1 on papers was also the day it got the most stars.

**A listed company's PR machine.** On 10-20, a batch of finance outlets published the same story at once, with the same framing: 12 simulated charts, 8 real devices, cost 1/50. 36 Pinwheel's version pushed the angle that SenseTime had just delivered its first profit report since going public, and it needed a new story. Indie devs don't have that kind of resource.

**One release split into eleven news items.** From 10-09 to 11-03 the README update log has eleven entries: five code batches, an image batch, and an experience pack, interspersed with "#1 on a leaderboard" and "weights released." Each one gives researchers a reason to click back in.

There's a discount to apply too. allagent.wiki's 10-21 breakdown points out that the RoboDojo 60.08 points belong to the combination of "SenseTime's Harness + GPT-6 Astra," not to SenseTime's own model. At the time RoboDojo's integration code had not been released, so others couldn't reproduce it, and the 27B model on its own scored only 20.83%. Comparing Harness alone, on LIBERO-PRO it leads a similar approach, RPent, by only 1.87 points (94.50% vs 92.63%).

### Who else is doing the same thing

| Name | What it is | Scale (GitHub stars) | Versus RoboRSI |
|---|---|---|---|
| huggingface/lerobot | End-to-end robot learning, datasets, hardware | About 29k | Doesn't do "LLM + Harness + cross-leaderboard evaluation" |
| Physical-Intelligence/openpi | π0 / π0.5 robot models | About 15k | RoboRSI uses it as the low-level controller |
| isaac-sim/IsaacLab | Simulation and training frameworks | About 8,600 | One builds the exam hall, the other runs exams in existing halls |
| RoboVerse | Unified simulation backend plus benchmarks | About 1,900 | Similar direction, but no LLM agent self-improvement |
| LIBERO, RoboCasa, BEHAVIOR-1K, RoboLab | Single benchmarks | 600 to 2,500 | Wrapped by RoboRSI into Docker for integration |
| GPT-Policy, PyRUA-Lean, Embodied-Harness | Academic repos from the same wave of "VLM as robot agent" | 96 to 359 | Single methods, with no multi-leaderboard runtime and no big-company backing |
| RPent | Other methods that also wrap Astra with a Harness | Not verified | Only 1.87 points behind on LIBERO-PRO |
| Inspect Robots(RoboCurve) | Independent evaluation with real robots and human scoring | Not verified | Tested on real robots, whereas RoboRSI is mainly simulation |

I haven't seen a repo built specifically around this yet. The closest concept, ros-claw/PhysicalEvoBench, has 0 stars.

### Can you follow it?

First, strip out what can't be borrowed: SenseTime's PR, the team and professor co-authors behind the Hugging Face #1 paper, and the exposure from the org's two repos with over 6,000 stars. Those together account for most of the 450 stars. Even so, 450 isn't a lot, which suggests the embodied-framework circle is small and the people starring it are mainly researchers.

Three things are worth learning, and they apply well beyond embodied AI:

1. **Run a serious evaluation of the hottest closed-source model, title it as a question, and open-source the eval code.** The report gets shared, and the repo catches the traffic. In the weeks after a new model launches, everyone wants to know "can it actually do X?"

2. **Package hard-to-install benchmarks into Docker with a unified interface.** This is the most practical value in RoboRSI, and one person can do it. Other fields have the same pain point: a pile of benchmarks, each with its own setup.

3. **Release code in batches, with one update post per batch.** A single big release gets one day of attention. Splitting it into eleven updates gives eleven reasons to pay attention.

The places it falls short are also opportunities: its headline results can't be reproduced, there's no independent re-testing, it's mostly simulation, and the cost numbers only cover a few tasks. An independent, reproducible head-to-head evaluation of "who can actually control robots" doesn't exist yet. But that takes compute and robots, so the entry bar is not low (my inference).

### If it were you

**C: worth reading to understand its playbook, but building an embodied framework to chase stars isn't worth it.** Its stars came mainly from the report's topic and SenseTime's PR, not from the framework itself. The embodied circle is small, and big-company backing plus press releases only got it 450 stars. Under the same topic, a resource list got nearly three times as many stars, which shows the traffic lives in the topic, not the framework.

- **Who it fits** : grad students or engineers who work in a specific research area, have compute and evaluation experience, and can produce a solid evaluation within two to three weeks of a new model launch. Or people who understand the "benchmarks are hard to install" pain point in some field.

- **Who it doesn't fit** : anyone who wants to build yet another embodied Harness head-on (several already exist in the same wave, including RPent and Embodied-Harness, all backed by labs), or anyone without robotics or simulation experience who just wants to ride the hype.

- **How to do it** : watch the next major model release, pick a capability people are arguing about that no one has systematically tested, publish the evaluation first, then open-source the code. Package the eval code in Docker with a unified interface, and put "run everything with one command" on the first screen of the README. Publish a report with a question as the title at the same time. For less effort, start with a topic list (an Awesome-style repo), which got the most stars in this wave.

- **How to get users** : submit the report to Hugging Face Daily Papers and arXiv, and link the paper page to the repo. Find an influential professor or researcher in the field to co-author and help repost. Then release code in batches, posting one update each on the README and X.

- **How long the window lasts** : the Astra topic has already been hot for two months, so the window in embodied AI is probably only a few weeks. This playbook reopens a window with every major model release, though.

- **Signs I'm wrong** : (1) RoboRSI gained 3,000 stars in a month, which means the GitHub audience for embodied frameworks is bigger than I assumed, and a standalone reproduction-evaluation or multi-benchmark packaging tool would be worth a step up. (2) Someone without big-company backing gets over a thousand stars on this topic with just one evaluation and open code, which means the playbook matters more than resources. (3) RoboDojo's official leaderboard lists its scores and third-party re-tests match, so it could become the standard tool in this area. Then the better move is to write plugins for it and integrate new benchmarks, rather than starting a competing project.

## Why SenseNova-RoboRSI (OpenSenseNova/SenseNova-RoboRSI) took off

> Channel: GitHub open source | Research date: 2026-11-06 | Data card: 450 stars / 33 forks, repo built 28 days ago, +135 over the last 7 days (+71 over the first 7 days)

### Bottom line

This is SenseTime's SenseNova team bundling a "report + framework + model" release around the industry buzz over whether GPT-6 Astra can control robots. The stars didn't come from the repo alone; three things drove them: an HF Papers #1 evaluation report on the day it launched, a coordinated wave of Chinese finance and tech media coverage, and a README that kept posting "leaderboard first" news. It's a few hundred stars, circulating in a small embodied-AI crowd. Its main difference from similar projects is packing 10 simulation leaderboards into Docker images behind one HTTP API, then layering on recursive self-improvement (RSI) that changes only the Harness, never the weights.

### 1. What it is

- A unified runtime for embodied agents (the author calls it a Harness): it connects models, prompts, skills, and tools/MCP to one execution and evaluation path. Each simulation leaderboard keeps its native execution and scoring logic, is wrapped in a Docker image, and is exposed through a unified HTTP API, so one config file runs end-to-end evaluation (README; as relayed by Sohu and 3636Kr).

- RSI layer: it uses execution traces and task feedback to revise the Harness (action prediction, planning, feedback, memory organization) while model parameters stay frozen. Candidate changes are retested under the same conditions, and only validated ones carry into the next version.

- Companion model SenseNova-RoboRSI-27B-Preview: built on Qwen3.8-27B, with weights released 2026-10-22 (HF, 317 downloads and 11 likes as of today); there's also an ICL experience-pack dataset (HF, 2028 downloads).

- Status: the README labels it Pre-Alpha; the repo description still says "Code release coming soon," but code has been trickling out: 10-16 released the LIBERO series, 10-20 released BEHAVIOR-1K/Bench2Dex/DexJoCo, 10-22 released RoboCasa, 365,10-30 released RoboLab, and 11-03 released LHPR-VLN and VLN-CE (README News).

### 2. Star curve against events (GitHub repo_day data + public coverage)

| Date | Stars | Gained that day | Events in the same period |
|---|---|---|---|
| Repo created 10-09 | — | — | README: RoboDojo score of 60.08, 31 points above the GPT-6 Astra baseline; AITOP coverage 10-10 |
| 10-15 / 10-16 | — | — | arXiv 2610.22471 "Has GPT-6-Astra Achieved Embodied Intelligence?" posted; 10-16 code first released |
| 10-17~10-19 | 63→73 | Daily +4~6 | Scattered reposts on LinkedIn and elsewhere |
| 10-19 | — | — | The paper hit **#1 on HF Daily Papers for the day** (submitted by author Cai Zhonggang, 135 upvotes today) |
| 10-20 | 142 | **+69 (peak)** | Sina Finance, Ifeng, Tencent, Jingji Guancha Wang, China Daily, Pandaily and others ran coordinated same-day stories: "SenseTime open-sources RoboRSI, cost cut to 1/50 of GPT-6-Astra"; neurohive and AT Pulse covered it in English |
| 10-21~10-23 | 190→244 | +48/+28/+26 | 10-22 released the 27B weights; Gate, aiaffairs and allagent.wiki followed |
| 10-25 | 268 | +7 | NTU professor Liu Ziwei (@liuziwei7) promoted the report on X |
| 10-26~10-27 | 277→288 | ~+10 | README announced first place on the RoboLab leaderboard and LIBERO-PRO (Papers With Code); daily.dev and AITOP covered it |
| 10-28~11-04 | 308→383 | Daily +3~25 | 10-30 released RoboLab, 11-03 released VLN code; 11-02 ai123 covered it |
| 11-05~11-06 | 428→450 | +45/+22 | Last 7 days +135, faster than the prior 7 days' +71; 11-06 36 36Kr reposted a long-form "Tech Business" piece (trigger source not verified) |

You can see it: the first wave was a spike from the paper plus media press releases (about 120 stars over 10-19–10-21, three days), after which a new "leaderboard code / leaderboard first" README update roughly every three to four days kept it creeping up. Forks rose from 10 to 33, mostly after 10-30, as code was released in stages and people started actually running it.

### 3. Where users came from (growth tactics)

1. **Riding the hype: the GPT-6 Astra embodiment race** . OpenAI 2026-09-03 released GPT-6 Astra, and RoboCurve 9-04 tested it live, having it control a real robotic arm (WeTalkRobots). Afterwards, "LLMs as robot policies" became a hot topic: Awesome-Astra-Embodied-AI picked up 1234 stars in a month, and similar repos like GPT-Policy and PyRUA-Lean appeared in 9-October (GitHub repos). RoboRSI's launch headline was literally "Does GPT-6 Astra Even Have Embodied Intelligence?", clearly riding this topic for traffic.

2. **Paper channels** : HF Daily Papers #1 for the day (10-19), alphaXiv, papers.cool, and YouTube paper walkthrough videos; the paper page links straight to GitHub (HF page shows GitHub 454).

3. **Big-company PR** : 10-20 Chinese financial media ran coordinated same-day stories with a unified message: "cost 1/50" and "12 simulation leaderboards, 8 real robots"; SenseTime's official Facebook account posted two tweets. This is PR firepower from a listed company.

4. **Academic influencer** : Liu Ziwei (NTU professor, paper collaborator) posted on X 10-25. A local x-radar search finds no results for RoboRSI / SenseNova over the past 30 days, so its spread on X is limited.

5. **Leaderboard wins in the README** : first on RoboLab, first on LIBERO-PRO, RoboDojo 31 points above baseline; each goes into News, giving researchers a reason to click through and star.

6. **Built-in org traffic** : the OpenSenseNova org includes SenseNova-U1 (6936 stars) and SenseNova-Skills (6033 stars), so the org page and followers provide baseline exposure.

7. No evidence found of HN, a dedicated Reddit thread, or TikTok promotion; the hot r/singularity thread was about Astra itself, not RoboRSI.

### 4. Competitors

| Name | Type | Launched | Scale | How RoboRSI differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| huggingface/lerobot | Open source | 2024-01 | 28707 stars | End-to-end learning with datasets and a hardware ecosystem; does not do "LLM + Harness + cross-leaderboard evaluation" |
| Physical-Intelligence/openpi | Open source | 2024-10 | 14551 stars | The π0/π0.5 VLA models themselves; the RoboRSI report uses them as a System 1 controller |
| isaac-sim/IsaacLab | Open source / big companies | 2022-11 | 8575 stars | Simulation and training frameworks; RoboRSI does evaluation and agent runtime on top of existing leaderboards |
| RoboVerseOrg/RoboVerse | Open source | 2025-04 | 1879 stars | Also aims at a "unified platform + benchmark," but through a unified simulation backend and datasets, without LLM-agent self-improvement |
| LIBERO / RoboCasa / BEHAVIOR-1K / NVlabs RoboLab | Open-source benchmark | 2021–2026 | 607–2517 stars | A single leaderboard that RoboRSI integrates; RoboRSI packages them into Docker and calls them through a unified API |
| SimplerEnv / EmbodiedBench / VLABench | Open-source benchmark | 2024–2025 | 358–1180 stars | Single evaluation set; RoboRSI aggregates multiple leaderboards and also includes an agent runtime |
| RPent(Harness) | Other (papers/methods) | 2026 | Not verified | Same Harness on Astra; 92.63% on LIBERO-PRO versus RoboRSI's 94.50%, a gap of only 1.87 points (as relayed by allagent.wiki from the README) |
| Inspect Robots(RoboCurve) | Open source / other | 2026-09 | Not verified | Independent evaluation with real robots and human scoring; RoboRSI mostly runs in simulation |
| GPT-Policy, PyRUA-Lean, Embodied-Harness | Open source | 2026-08~09 | 96–359 stars | An academic repo from the same wave of "VLM/Astra as robot agent" work: a single method, with no multi-leaderboard runtime and no big-company backing |
| zjwzcx/Awesome-Astra-Embodied-AI | Open-source list | 2026-09 | 1234 stars | Just a resource list, but it shows this topic draws more traffic than any single framework |
| EmbodiedEvo, PhysicalRSI and others | Other (methods entered in the RoboDojo leaderboard) | 2026 | Not verified | Also on the RoboDojo leaderboard, scoring 36–45, below the 60 RoboRSI self-reports |

### 5. Differentiation

- **Engineering-wise** : more than ten embodied leaderboards packaged with Docker, a unified interface, and one command to evaluate any model that exposes an OpenAI-compatible API. Environment setup is a known pain point in embodied research, so this is a real convenience.

- **Method-wise** : RSI changes only the Harness, not the weights, and uses validated experience to train a 27B model, forming a closed loop.

- **Narrative-wise** : "Astra is strong but expensive; we cut the cost to 1/50," pitching cost as the selling point instead of a higher score.

- Are these differences why it took off? **Only partly** . The first wave of stars came mainly from the report's buzz and big-company press releases, not the framework itself; the framework's convenience and leaderboard wins mostly kept stars climbing slowly over the following three weeks and drove more forks. There's a caveat too: allagent.wiki points out that the most striking RoboDojo score of 60 came from the "Harness + GPT-6 Astra" combination, and at the time the RoboDojo integration code had not been released, and the 27B model alone scored much lower; comparing only the Harness, it leads by just 1.87 points on RPent.

### 6. How many people have seen it

- Covered by Chinese finance and tech outlets (Sina, Tencent, Ifeng, Jingguan, China Daily, 3636Kr) and English AI news sites (neurohive, Pandaily, daily.dev, AITOP); #1 paper on HF that day.

- But on GitHub it has only 450 stars, HF model downloads are 317, and there's almost no discussion on X in the x-radar corpus. So it's **spreading in a small embodied-AI research circle, with a big-company PR push reaching the media** , not yet breaking out to the developer mainstream.

- Copycats: none directly cloning it yet. ros-claw/PhysicalEvoBench (built by 10-20, 0 stars, "self-improving embodied agent benchmark") is only a similar concept. The same wave of "Astra robot agent" repos looks more like parallel competition than copycats.

### 7. What others can learn

1. **Riding the frontier-model hype with an evaluation report** : run the hottest closed models through a systematic evaluation, title the report as a question, and open-source the eval framework. The report drives traffic, the repo catches it.

2. **Splitting one launch into multiple news hooks** : release code in batches by leaderboard, and each time a batch takes a first place, write it into the README News section, giving media and the community a steady stream of reasons to talk.

3. **Leaning on "cheap" as the selling point** : the number 1/50 is catchy, and the media all quoted it.

4. **Lowering the reproduction barrier** (Docker + HTTP + one command) is the key to keeping people in a research framework.

### 8. Still unclear

- On 11-05, the specific source of the +45 is unclear (possibly the VLN code release, or a WeChat Official Account or an X repost). Not verified.

- The makeup of the stargazers (e.g. whether SenseTime-internal or partner-university accounts are a large share) was not checked: the GitHub API quota ran out.

- No independent re-run yet of the 27B model and the Harness; whether RoboDojo's official leaderboard includes it is unverified.

- The scale of competitors such as RPent and EmbodiedEvo is unverified.
