An open-source version of a competitor's closed hit fan game: 7 commits, 645 stars in 24 days
What it is An open-source rebuild of the hit WoW fan mini-game "Azeroth Survivors". It runs offline on your own computer and can be modified freely; the original never released its source.
Why it blew up The original was popularized by streamers Noobheal, Asmongold and Xaryu, but it's closed-source and only ships builds via Discord, so anyone who wants to modify it, play offline, or see the numbers had to come here. The author's launch tweet got 137k impressions, and a dozen guide sites kept linking it as a data source.
CHow you could follow this Watch closed-source or indie fan games that streamers are currently playing; within a week of the original's release, build a working open-source version using off-the-shelf engines and AI; state in the README that it's unofficial and link back to the original; put the numbers into a table in the repo so guide sites link to it.

azeroth-survivors-re is not an original game. It's an open-source rebuild of Azeroth Survivors, the viral WoW-fan-made roguelike. The original author never released the source, so this is the only copy on GitHub you can clone, run offline, and modify freely. Created Oct 13, 7 commits in total, no updates since Oct 26, and by Nov 6 it had 645 stars and 266 forks. Below: how the stars were borrowed, why only this repo could borrow them, and whether copying this playbook to chase stars is worth it and how to do it.
The original went viral for five days, then posted "now fully open source after being reverse-engineered"
In early October 2026, a player named Aethus made a small single-player game: classic WoW art, Vampire Survivors gameplay. Play it in the browser at wow.aethus.pl. Pick a class and a map, move with WASD, skills fire automatically, waves of enemies swarm in, you level up and pick cards, and a boss shows up every few minutes. On Oct 9, YouTube's Noobheal HQ posted "Azeroth Survivors - NEW Roguelike Game!", which had 132k views by 11-06; on TikTok, erradicgaming's Oct 13 video had 189k views.
The original had one quirk: it wasn't open source, and its changelog was only posted on Discord.
On the morning of Oct 13 (UTC 07:00), Brooklyn Nicholson, designer and developer at Nous Research (X: @imbabybrooklyn, about 10.9k followers), posted:
RE'd Azeroth Survivors bc a roguelike WoW is an amazing idea and I believe it should be easily playable and improved. Run it yourself or fork it here
with a gameplay video. The tweet reached 11-06 with 137k impressions, 796 likes and 708 bookmarks (X, 11-06). A reply that afternoon, "It's improved w/ feeling like a real game", drew another 93k impressions. Bookmarks nearly matched likes: the classic "save it, clone it later" pattern. The same day, a Reddit r/wowservers post titled "Azeroth Survivors has been reverse engineered and made completely open source - build on it as you wish!" got about 248 upvotes.
From the original's Reddit launch (around Oct 8, inferred from post numbering, unverified) to this repo going up was about five days.
How it got built so fast
Because the hardest part was already done by someone else. In July 2026, someone used Claude to rewrite the entire WoW 1.12.1 client from scratch in Rust + Bevy, called benilla (935 stars), and later a version that runs in the browser, wenilla (60 stars). Mods built on it had become a trend: a skateboard WoW, Minecraft inside WoW, and a server-side survivors mode (hordes-of-azeroth, 113 stars).
With that base, "remake a WoW fan game" became a few days' work for one person. It went from first release to a major overhaul in just 12 hours. The author's X bio reads "just a doll using a lot of tokens", and an issue thread has someone saying "Code generated by claude is also MIT", so heavy AI involvement is likely (inferred).
The README's first screen is restrained: Not an original project. The original belongs to Aethus; go play the original in the browser. It links the original's Reddit post and Discord. The repo ships no Blizzard assets: make build downloads the ~5.5GB 1.12.1 client from archive.org, compiles it to wasm, and serves it locally at http://127.0.0.1:8090.
Where the stars came from
| Date | Cumulative stars | Cumulative forks | What happened |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10-13 | 0 | — | Repo created; the author's X launch and Reddit post; about 25–29 forks on launch day and the next day |
| 10-17 | 176 | 72 | After the first wave, +5 to +15 per day |
| 10-24 | 235 | 105 | An Asmongold clip channel's TikTok (374k views) drove the original's second wave |
| 10-27 | 310 | 145 | |
| 10-28 | 440 | 195 | +130 in a single day, the biggest of the whole run |
| 10-29 | 486 | 202 | Xaryu posted "Azeroth Survivors Is ACTUALLY Addicting" (238k views) and streamed it two days running |
| 11-06 | 645 | 266 | Last 7 days +127, the 7 days before that +296. It's cooling. |
(GitHub stars and forks, daily, as of 11-06; per-day counts for 10-13 to 10-16 are missing. Forks are dated from GitHub.)
First, the original's buzz. It was the entire source. The peaks in both stars and forks line up with the original's two waves, each driven by streamers. The second wave came as Blizzard's official WoW: Forever launched in Nov 4, and streamers were playing this mini-game as a "waiting room" game; Xaryu's stream title was literally "FOREVER WAITING ROOM". Streamers promoted the original and none linked the repo directly. The repo caught the overflow: people who watched a video and wanted to modify it, play it offline, or read the numbers. Anyone searching "Azeroth Survivors GitHub" found only this. Which channel produced the +130 on 10-28 can't be separated (inferred: overflow from streamer audiences).
Second, the author's own X and a Reddit post built the first wave. 137k + 93k impressions, which is a big hit for a 10k-follower account. The Reddit post stayed in the "related posts" of several same-topic threads on r/wowservers and r/xaryu for a long time.
Third, a batch of SEO guide sites linked it over and over as a data source. After the original blew up, at least a dozen sites chasing "azeroth survivors" appeared: azerothsurvivors.org, azeroth-survivors.wiki, azeroth-survivors.games, wowsurvivors.com, and more. Almost each has a page on "Azeroth Survivors GitHub", and several scrape values from the repo for their guides. azeroth-survivors.games's map page says "straight from the open-source data (azeroth-survivors-re)". The original doesn't publish code, so this repo became the only scrapeable "official numbers" on the web. That's why it kept gaining a few stars a day after it stopped updating.
Not present: no Hacker News, no press coverage, no promotion that I could find.
Who showed up
The fork-to-star ratio is 41%. For new repos of similar size, the median is about 11%. These people didn't come to click a like; they came to pull it down and change it. External PRs and issues show the same: Docker, a Windows installer, PWA, regression tests, and someone wrote a "Megabonk roadmap".
But none of those PRs were merged. People who want to play don't come here; they play the original. This repo needs Rust, a 5.5GB download, and Git Bash on Windows. Its content also lags the original, which is already at version 0.139. Issue #21 is titled "Repo does not match", and someone in the thread says the original author "never released the source and probably never will".
Who it's competing with
| Project | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Azeroth Survivors original (Aethus) | Web + Windows build via Discord | About 10-08 | Top streamers played it; best single video 374k views | The real thing, continuously updated, click and play; not open source |
| benilla | GitHub | 2026-07-24 | 935 stars | The underlying engine, the full WoW 1.12.1 client, with no roguelike gameplay |
| wenilla | GitHub | 2026-08-29 | 60 stars | benilla's browser version, which this repo builds on |
| hordes-of-azeroth | GitHub | About 10-17 | 113 stars, +79 in the last 7 days | Server-side survivors mode in Lua, requires connecting to a private server; Noobheal 11-05 posted an "ANOTHER Roguelike Game" video |
| Azeroth: Rally and Survive | Fan project posted on Reddit | Late October | Not verified | Co-op version for 1–4 players |
There was only one slot for "the open-source version of the original," and this repo took it. Later similar projects didn't fight for that slot; they took different approaches (server-side, co-op), and their stars stayed in the hundreds.
Why the position couldn't hold
- The stars were borrowed. When the original's buzz faded, the stars faded too: after WoW: Forever launched in Nov 4, streamers moved on and daily growth dropped to single digits.
- The author never planned a long run. No pushes after Oct 26, and not a single PR merged. For him it was a nice moment in the spotlight, not a project to maintain.
- There's copyright risk. The repo ships no Blizzard assets, but the script pulls the whole client from archive.org. If Blizzard or the original author objects one day, a DMCA takedown could end it (inferred; no signs so far).
If it were you
Bottom line: This playbook is copyable and cheap, but each time you have to wait for someone else's hit and beat it within five days. The star ceiling is a few hundred, and most of the fame goes to the original. Worth learning from; not worth deliberately waiting for.
Who it suits: developers already embedded in a fan/mod scene (WoW private servers, Pokémon fan projects, pixel games) who have an engine on hand, can rebuild a small game with AI in a few days, and want a "I shipped a few-hundred-star game project" line on their résumé.
Who it doesn't suit: people who want to build long-term reputation through open source (these repos get no traffic once the hype dies); people unwilling to work in copyright gray areas; people too far from that scene who only learn a game is hot once it's already in its second wave.
How to do it:
- Watch for fan or indie mini-games that are closed-source, only distribute builds via Discord, and are being played by streamers right now. The benilla circle is still producing new things (some are already summarizing "Azeroth Survivors, Pokemon Survivors, Azeroth FPS"), making it the most recent hunting ground.
- Speed first. The original was on Reddit, and a working version had to be out within a week. Being first is everything.
- The README's first screen states "not original" and links back to the original and its Discord, so the original's community doesn't turn on you. Don't include any copyrighted material in the repo.
- Put the numbers and configs in the repo as tables that are easy to read, so guide sites have something to copy and will link to you themselves.
- Or fill the gaps it left: merge the community's Docker / Windows installer PRs, make a one-click playable build, and keep up with the original's content. This repo has 266 forks, but no recognized "successor build" exists yet, so that slot is still open. The original's buzz is fading, though, so the payoff is limited.
How to get stars: pin a clearly understandable gameplay video to your launch tweet, with copy that's just "I reverse-engineered it, run it yourself or fork it"; post the same day to the game's subreddit with a title like "now fully open source after being reverse-engineered". Let the original's next wave of buzz do the rest.
When was the window: for Azeroth Survivors specifically, it's already closed; for the next one, it's the week after its Reddit launch.
Signs you've misread it: the original author open-sources it themselves, or a working rebuild already shows up in a GitHub search; or your launch tweet doesn't pass 10k impressions within two days and forks stay in single digits, meaning not enough of the game's players want to modify it. Move on to the next one.

One line
Key facts
- Created 2026-10-13 03:23 UTC by Brooklyn Nicholson (GitHub OutThisLife, X @imbabybrooklyn, about 10.9k followers, design/dev lead for Nous Research's Hermes Agent Desktop). (GitHub API; x-radar corpus)
- As of 11-06:645–649 stars and 266 forks, a fork/star ratio of ≈ 41% (the median for comparable new repos in the GitHub SCHEMA data is about 11%, so this one is far higher: people are actually pulling it down to modify it).
- Only 7 commits, all between 10/13 and 10/26; nothing pushed since 10/26 (GitHub commits API). Most open issues and PRs are outside contributions: Docker, a Windows installer, PWA, regression tests, a "Megabonk roadmap", etc.
- Star curve (data card, daily): 10/17 176 → 10/26 260 (5–15 per day) → 10/27 310 → 10/28 440 (+130 in a single day) → 11/01 583 → 11/06 645 (daily gains down to single digits). GitHub trend status: "cooling". Last 7 days +127, prior 7 days +296.
- Forks by date (GitHub forks API, 265 total): 10/13 25, 10/14 29 (first wave); 10/25 17, 10/26 31, 10/27 30, 10/29 19, 10/30 20 (second wave); after November, single digits per day.
- Upstream: samwhosung/benilla has 935 stars (created 2026-07-24; a Reddit r/wowemulation post says it was reverse-engineered and rewritten with Claude Opus and Fable). Arnesen/wenilla has 60 stars (browser wasm build).
Why it took off
1. The original blew up first, and this repo owns the only spot: "the open-source version of the original"
- The original, Azeroth Survivors: a single-player WoW fan roguelike by Aethus (Vampire Survivors / Megabonk gameplay with classic WoW art), playable in the browser at wow.aethus.pl. It was posted to r/wowservers around 10/8 (post 1x0yidl; date inferred from the Reddit post ID, not verified).
- Wave one (10/9–10/15): YouTube Noobheal HQ "Azeroth Survivors - NEW Roguelike Game!" posted 10/9, 132k views; Ghost Gaming Insider 10/1.14M; Just Breathe live stream 10/9, 23k. TikTok erradicgaming's post 10/13 got 189k views, and another 10/14 got 97k; solastro.gaming 10/13 25k. (YouTube Data API / TikHub; 11-06 pulled)
- 第二波(10/23–10/31):Asmongold 剪辑号 asmongame 10/24 的 TikTok 37.4 万、18.2 万、6.7 万播放(「Fan Builds Playable World Of Warcraft Vampire Survivors Clone In Web Browser」);Xaryu 10/29 发「Azeroth Survivors Is ACTUALLY Addicting」23.8 万播放,10/29、10/30 两场直播标题都带 AZEROTH SURVIVORS(14.3 万、12.8 万)。
- The original is not open source, and its changelog is only posted on Discord (see the comment by eTzmNcbkrng on issue #21: "The developer of the game has not released the source code and probably never will"). This repo is the only place for people who want to modify it, play offline, or study the stats.
- The star spikes match the original's two waves. The first wave lines up with the fork peak on 10/13–14; the second lines up with the fork peak on 10/25–10/30 and the star jump on 10/27–28. The +10/28 on 130 overlaps the stretch from Asmongold (10/24) to Xaryu (10/29). There's no hourly data showing which channel sent people to GitHub, so this is unverified (the GitHub stargazers API returned 404 for this query, so per-star timestamps aren't available).
2. The author's own X launch post plus one Reddit thread drove wave one
- 10/13 07:00 UTC 发的 X 帖:「RE'd Azeroth Survivors bc a roguelike WoW is an amazing idea and I believe it should be easily playable and improved. Run it yourself or fork it here」+ 视频。13.7 万曝光、796 赞、708 收藏;同日 15:18 跟帖「It's improved w/ feeling like a real game」9.3 万曝光、676 赞。(X API public_metrics,11-06 取)收藏数接近点赞数,典型的「先存着回头 clone」。
- r/wowservers: "Azeroth Survivors has been reverse engineered and made completely open source - build on it as you wish!" (post 1x4wcbk; search snippet shows about 248 upvotes; poster and exact time are not verified because Reddit blocked scraping). Afterward, the related-posts sidebar on several Azeroth Survivors threads in r/wowservers and r/xaryu kept linking to this post, sustaining traffic over time.
- The author's own accounts also picked up exposure in those days: 10/14's post about leaving Hermes Desktop for a bigger challenge got 450K views, and 10/16 posted a thank-you for TIME. The repo shows up on the profile, but how much traffic it brought can't be separated out.
3. A batch of SEO fan sites keeps linking to it as a "data source"
- After the original blew up, a wave of sites appeared chasing the "azeroth survivors" search term: azerothsurvivors.org, azeroth-survivors.org, azeroth-survivors.com, azeroth-survivors.games, azeroth-survivors.wiki, azerothsurvivorsgame.wiki, wowsurvivors.com / .net, azerothsurvivors.shop / .co / .run / .lat and more, at least 12 in total (Jina / Exa search results).
- Nearly every site has an "Azeroth Survivors GitHub" page about this repo (e.g. azeroth-survivors.org/guides/github, azeroth-survivors.wiki/github, which says it was verified 10/15). Several scrape stats straight from the repo for guides: azeroth-survivors.games/maps says "straight from the open-source data (azeroth-survivors-re)", and azerothsurvivors.lat says "Our class reference uses OutThisLife/azeroth-survivors-re".
- The original has no public code, so this repo became the only "official" stats source the guide sites could crawl. The whole SEO network links back to it, feeding a steady stream of long-tail traffic. That explains why it's no longer updated yet daily stars haven't dropped to zero.
4. Timing: the AI-driven WoW client reverse-engineering boom
- benilla is a WoW 1.12.1 client rewritten with Claude in July, and the community has been building mods on it: world-of-skatecraft (145 stars), wowcraft (Minecraft in WoW, 80), hordes-of-azeroth (113). Someone on LinkedIn summed it up: "vanilla WoW source code got reverse-engineered a few weeks ago... Azeroth Survivors, Pokemon Survivors, Azeroth FPS".
- With benilla/wenilla, the cost of "rebuild a viral WoW fan game" dropped to one person and a few days (7 commits, with the first release to the major update taking only 12 hours). The author's X bio reads "just a doll using a lot of tokens", and an issue has someone saying "Code generated by claude is also MIT", which suggests heavy AI involvement (unverified).

Breakdown of the growth tactics
- Riding the name / a free ride (confirmed): the repo name, description, and README all use the original's name. The README opens with "Not an original project" and links back to the original and its Discord, so it avoids backlash. Every time a big streamer features the original, people searching "Azeroth Survivors GitHub / source" land here.
- Author's own X launch (confirmed): 137k + 93k impressions, with a video, plus a Reddit post the same day.
- Reddit r/wowservers (confirmed): the "reverse-engineered, fully open source" post got about 248 upvotes and stays in the sidebar of related threads.
- SEO fan-site backlinks (confirmed): 10 several sites chasing the keywords have a page on this repo and pull data from it.
- Streamers / short video (indirect): no evidence that streamers sent viewers directly to the repo. They promoted the original, and the repo caught the spillover.
- No HN coverage (no related story in the hackernews database), no press, no paid acquisition.
Differentiation
- Its only selling point: the original is closed source and controlled by Discord, while this is the version you can clone, run offline, and fork freely. That is why it took off. Forks and stars are at 41%. Outside contributors have submitted PRs for Docker, a Windows installer, a PWA, and a Megabonk roadmap, which suggests the visitors want to modify it, not just play it (people who just want to play went to wow.aethus.pl).
- But it is not the original, and it does not track the original's updates. The author 10/26 stopped pushing and the PRs were never merged. Its advantage is a one-time position, not a product moat. Once the original's heat fades (after WoW: Forever 11/4 launched and streamers moved on), it will cool down with it.
What to borrow
- "Open-source or offline version of a viral game" is a cheap way to collect stars: the original is closed, the players are in Discord, and developers and modders had nowhere to go. The first open-source rebuild captured the entire GitHub search intent. Speed mattered: it launched about 5 days after the original went viral.
- The README admits "not original" and sends traffic back to the source, so the original community did not turn on it. Instead, fan sites cite it as a trusted source.
- Putting playable stats and data tables in the repo gets them repeatedly linked from SEO guide sites that use it as a data source, which builds long-tail traffic.
- The underlying tooling is an existing AI reverse-engineering engine (benilla), so the same playbook can be copied to the next viral fan game built on it.
Unknowns
- No hourly star data, so the direct sources of the 10/27–28 +130 spike cannot be separated (Asmongold / Xaryu viewers? which SEO site? a new Reddit post?).
- The Reddit post's author, exact posting time, and final score (Reddit blocks scraping).
- Whether the original itself runs on benilla/wenilla (the README only says the re version runs on it).
- The original author's stance on this project, and whether Blizzard will file a DMCA (the repo contains no Blizzard assets, but the script downloads the 1.12.1 client from archive.org).
