A product manager who hadn't written code in 20 years, and the company behind him, New H3C: how Pinvou got its 2,800 stars
What it is An open-source desktop AI workspace from New H3C that calls tools, reads and writes files, creates editable posters, and connects to coding agents, delivering results as files. It's also the companion software for their MegaCube desktop AI supercomputer.
Why it caught on A LINUX DO open-source promotion post titled "a product manager who hadn't written code in 20 years" got the cold start, and the English README was good enough that overseas repost accounts shared it themselves; behind it, a large company's team kept a release cadence of twice a week to sustain the long tail.
CHow you could follow this Stop building all-in-one desktop agents. Pick a narrow gap it hasn't covered thoroughly (one-click monitoring for local model deployment, MCP connectors for domestic office software), go deep on that alone, and promote it using its playbook: a LINUX DO post plus a Chinese/English README.

The open-source desktop AI agent "Pinvou Agent" has been live for 105 days and has gathered 2,846 stars. It looks like another individual vibe-coding success story, but digging further, behind it is a team from New H3C (H3C) and a desktop AI supercomputer for sale. What drives stars for projects like this, what you can learn, and what you can't, we'll go through section by section below.
A forum post
In 2026 July 28, a user named hexin5898 posted on the developer community LINUX DO with the title "A product manager who hadn't written code in 20 years built an open-source desktop agent: Pinvou." He wrote that in 2026 Spring Festival he was ignited by OpenClaw ("little lobster"), then followed it to Claude Code: "From March to June, I sat in front of the computer fifteen or sixteen hours almost every day... I felt like I'd suddenly gone back to 20." In late March to early May he built two versions himself; the first "went wherever I thought of and quickly became a mess," so he started over. In early May he handed the project to a colleague named h3c-hexin, and "with the efforts of him and several other colleagues" the repo appeared on GitHub.
The name "Pinvou" was also one of the candidate names Claude Code generated in batch. The post's last line is a question: "If a desktop agent could really finish a piece of work for you, what would you most want it to finish?" The post got 26 likes, and the author followed up in replies all the way through mid-August.
This post carries LINUX DO's "open-source promotion" tag. Under community rules, the project must be fully open-sourced and the README must link to LINUX DO, and Pinvou's README does exactly that.
What it is
An AI workspace installed on your computer, written in Rust + Tauri 2 + React, under the MIT license, with installers for Windows, macOS, and Linux. The README's first line says it is "not just a chat window"; the end point of a task is a file, not a reply. It breaks down into three uses:
- Work: attach files, mount local knowledge bases, call MCP tools and skills, and hand back a reusable file;
- Design: generate posters and charts from a single sentence, then click elements directly in design mode to edit text, color, and size;
- Code: connect Codex, Claude Code, and Kimi via the ACP protocol to modify real projects.
The underlying engine is forked from a terminal coding agent written in Rust (CodeWhale, 40k+ stars). Pinvou is essentially a desktop shell on top of it, aimed at "ordinary non-developer users."
Who's behind it
The repo is organized under the name Pinvou alone, but the clues are easy to connect:
- The official site pinvou.com is titled "New H3C Intelligent Terminal · Complete Local AI Solution," and its homepage sells Pinvou alongside MegaCube. MegaCube is H3C's desktop AI supercomputer, with an NVIDIA GB10 chip and 128GB of unified memory, essentially H3C's version of the DGX Spark.
- H3C's official product navigation lists "Pinvou AI Agent Platform" directly, alongside MegaCube and MegaBook; the dealer pages sell "Pinvou × MegaCube."
- The top contributor asto18089 (416 commits) has a GitHub profile reading The New H3C Group, Guangzhou; another of the main contributors is named h3c-hexin.
So this is companion software for a hardware product. The features that other desktop agents don't really offer are aimed at MegaCube buyers: a built-in model store (download weights, deploy, check run status), GPU/memory monitoring, one-click connection to local vLLM; installers for LoongArch (64) chips from UOS and deepin; ready-made connectors for Feishu, DingTalk, WeCom, Tencent Meeting, Tencent Docs, and Qichacha; and model templates for DeepSeek, Kimi, Qwen, Doubao, and GLM. This is a configuration for government, enterprise, and Xinchuang (IT application innovation) customers.
Where the stars came from
The growth curve can be split into three phases:
| Timeline | What happened | Metric |
|---|---|---|
| End of July | LINUX DO open-source promotion post cold start; README includes a QQ group QR code | Post got 26 likes |
| August | The English README got picked up by overseas GitHub repost accounts and aggregator sites: an X account that auto-posts GitHub monitoring alerts posted it at 854 stars, a LinkedIn 8-14 GitHub weekly digest featured it, Instagram has several "Stop paying for Cursor & Replit" reels, and YouTube Shorts has someone calling it a "Zapier Killer" | August alone: 210 forks (GitHub, counted by fork time) |
| September to now | A long tail of ten-to-twenty-some stars a day, propped up by two releases a week, a three-language README, and inclusion in various awesome lists | 10-12 is 2,449,11-06 is 2,846; last 7 days +120, the 7 days before that +89; single-day peak +24 (10-21) |
Several things it has not had say just as much: it has never made GitHub trending, it can't be found on Hacker News or Product Hunt, no big accounts on X have shared it, and no media has covered it.
Two more numbers look off. First, the watch ratio: 302 watchers to 2,864 stars, about 10.5%, where typical open-source projects sit at 1–3%; the fork-to-star ratio of about 14.6% is also high. This looks like a group inside a company or among partners watching the repo (inference; GitHub's stargazers endpoint won't open for this repo, so it can't be verified). Second, downloads: over 30 releases are out on GitHub Releases, but every installer for each release combined has only 10–60 downloads. v0.10.17, released by 11-04, got 3 Windows downloads and 2 macOS downloads. Stars mean people looked and liked what they saw. They don't mean people are using it (most may be downloading from the website instead, unverified).
Who it's competing with
This category is already crowded. Big tech has Tencent's WorkBuddy, Alibaba's CoPaw, and the native desktop apps from Claude and Codex. Open source has a large group too:
| Project | star | Compared with Pinvou |
|---|---|---|
| UI-TARS-desktop (ByteDance) | 39,554 | Operates computers by watching the screen |
| cc-haha | 15,318 | A desktop shell for Claude Code, leaning toward coding |
| Ekko Studio | 11,695 | Multi-agent, coding, and visualization all present, nearly overlapping |
| ClawX (a desktop shell for OpenClaw) | 7,600 | A GUI wrapped around the lobster (OpenClaw) |
| LobsterAI (NetEase Youdao) | 6,169 | Nearly the same positioning, built with Electron |
| hello-halo | 1,912, +147 in the last 7 days | 7×24 personal desktop agent |
Pinvou sits in the middle of the pack. The creator says so in their own post: "Turns out WorkBuddy already existed, and then Marvis showed up."
Can you follow it?
This is a GitHub project, and "follow" here means building an open-source project that can also earn stars. Breaking it down:
Hard to copy: a full-time team, a release cadence of two a week across 30+ versions, complete engineering with ADRs and SBOMs, all backed by a large company's budget. The users brought in by hardware channels and distributors are also out of reach for an individual.
Easy to copy:
- The LINUX DO "open-source promotion" post. Almost zero cost: tag it, make it fully open source, add friendly links to the README, and tell a true story. "A 20-year product manager writes code for the first time" carries shareability on its own.
- Write the English README so it can get reposted. A one-line positioning statement, one screenshot, a 90-second demo video, three language versions. The overseas reposts in August weren't solicited. The repost accounts found it themselves.
- Claim the spots overseas products can't reach. Domestic office connectors, domestic model templates, and Xinchuang (government-procurement IT) installers are things Claude and Codex won't build, and they're the hardest parts of Pinvou to replace.
Not worth copying: building yet another "do-everything desktop agent workbench." There are dozens of these, four or five from big companies. An individual project struggles to stand out here. Pinvou, with a big company behind it, has only reached 2.8k stars and about twenty a day.
If it were you
Verdict: C. You can learn a cheap, effective open-source promotion playbook from it, but "general desktop agent" is already saturated, and about half of Pinvou's momentum comes from things you can't get (a corporate team and hardware channels).
Who it fits: individual developers who already have an open-source project and need the first batch of stars, especially Chinese-speaking developers; or small teams with hardware, compute, or cloud resources to sell who want to use an open-source tool as the entry point.
Who it doesn't fit: individuals trying to build a "desktop Claude Code / lobster shell" from scratch to collect stars. That path already has projects with 15k and 40k stars and a row of big-tech products.
How to do it: don't build a big, all-in-one workbench. Pick one narrow point that Pinvou touches but doesn't go deep on, and build it out fully. For example, "one-click deployment and monitoring of local models" (for DGX Spark, Mac Studio, and AI PC users), or "a collection of MCP connectors for domestic office software" (Feishu, DingTalk, WeCom, Tencent Docs). Narrow tools are easier to explain in one sentence and easier to get into awesome lists.
How to get users: first post on LINUX DO following the open-source promotion rules, and explain clearly why you built it. Prepare the README in Chinese and English with a screenshot and short video at the top. Then wait for overseas repost accounts and aggregators, and submit to lists like awesome-mcp and awesome-llm yourself.
Timing: the local AI hardware wave (GB10 all-in-one machines, AI PCs) is still rolling out, so building local model deployment tools is still early before the first half of 2027. Domestic office connectors can be built at any time, but big companies could add their own at any point.
Signs you've misread it: ① Pinvou suddenly accelerates over the next month or two, makes GitHub trending, and gains over a hundred stars a day. That would mean the "desktop agent workbench" still has room, and this analysis underrated it. ② Within a month, either narrow niche (local model deployment or domestic office connectors) gets a strong open-source project or an official big-company solution. That would mean the narrow angles are taken too.

Why Pinvou Agent (品悟) got traction
In one sentence: Pinvou Agent is an open-source desktop agent workbench that H3C (H3C) built for its own desktop AI supercomputer, MegaCube (NVIDIA GB10). The 2,800 stars came mainly from a big company's team using open source, a cold start in the domestic developer community (LINUX DO), and overseas GitHub repost accounts spreading it on their own. Real downloads on GitHub are few. At heart it's supporting software for a hardware product, not a standalone product that broke out on its own.
1. Basic data
- Repo Pinvou/pinvou-agent, created 2026-07-24, MIT license, Rust + Tauri 2 + React. 2026-11-06 is 2,846 stars / 416 forks (data card); the GitHub API showed 2,864 stars / 418 forks / 302 watchers on the day of checking.
- Growth has been flat: 2026-10-12 is 2,449,11-06 is 2,846, about 15–25 a day. Last 7 days +120, the 7 days before that +89; single-day peak +24 (10-21). It has never made GitHub trending (data card: trending_days_any=0).
- Forks by month (GitHub forks API, 437 total): July 16, August 210, September 101, October 92, November 18. August was the burst.
- Tiny download numbers: GitHub Releases has 30 many releases (v0.7.3 → v0.10.17, almost two per week), and each release's installers add up to only 10–60 downloads. The latest, v0.10.17 (11-04), got 3 Windows downloads, 2 macOS, and 1 each for the Linux deb. Stars and real installs are far apart (downloads may also mostly come from pinvou.com, not verified).
- The stargazers endpoint returns 404 for this repo, so the star timeline and account quality can't be checked directly. Of 59 fork accounts sampled, 30 were registered only 2025–2026 years ago. New accounts are over-represented, but it doesn't look like a batch of bot accounts.
- watcher/star ≈ 10.5%, fork/star ≈ 14.6%. Both are clearly above typical open-source projects (watchers usually 1–3%), which suggests a group of company-internal or ecosystem partners is watching (inference).
2. Who built it: the key finding is that it's backed by H3C (New H3C)
- The official site pinvou.com is titled "H3C Smart Terminal · Complete Local AI Solution," and its homepage sells the MegaCube "desktop-class AI supercomputer," model validation, and the "Pinwu agent" together. MegaCube = H3C LinSeer MegaCube: NVIDIA GB10 Grace Blackwell, 128GB unified memory, 200G ConnectX-7, essentially the H3C version of the DGX Spark (pinvou.com/megacube.html).
- H3C's official site lists "Pinvou AI Agent Platform" right in its product nav, alongside MegaCube and MegaBook (h3c.com/cn/d_202603/2777699_473262_0.htm). A reseller page is also selling "Pinvou × MegaCube" (yinzhongct.com/ai/megacube).
- Contributors: asto18089 (GitHub profile says The New H3C Group, Guangzhou, 416 commits), h3c-hexin (67), zhuowp (65), qiuYliangM (79), and others. The initiator says on LINUX DO that they've been a product manager for 20 years and never written code. From 3 to May, they built a demo with Claude Code vibe coding, and May handed it to h3c-hexin and a few colleagues to turn into a product (linux.do/t/topic/2665306,2026-07-28).
- The engine CodeWhale is forked from codewhale-hq/Codewhale (the upstream is a Rust terminal coding agent, 41k stars), so Pinvou is essentially a desktop UI wrapped around it.
3. Where users came from (growth tactics)
| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed? |
|---|---|---|
| LINUX DO "open source promotion" thread | 2026-07-28 The initiator hexin5898 posted "A product manager who hadn't written code in 20 years built an open-source desktop Agent: Pinvou", got 26 likes, and the author followed up in August. The README's "friendly links" section specifically includes LINUX DO (this is the LINUX DO open-source promotion convention). | Yes |
| QQ group | The README includes the QR code for the official QQ user group 1108909346 | Yes |
| Overseas GitHub repost accounts / aggregator sites | On X, @Marco_Ramilli (slopcodemonitor.ai auto-posts) posted at 854 stars; LinkedIn's "GitHub digest 2026-08-14" included it; Instagram has several reels titled "Stop paying for Cursor & Replit" and "turns one prompt into a real deliverable" (citing 2,335 stars); a YouTube Short "Zapier Killer"; SkillsLLM, TypingMind skills, productapp, and awesome-llm lists all picked it up. | Yes (all organic reposts, small scale) |
| H3C hardware channels / distributors | H3C official product line, the MegaCube dealer page (品悟 × MegaCube): MegaCube buyers bring their own users | Yes (how many stars it brought in is unverified) |
| Company-internal / ecosystem | Both the watcher and fork ratios are high, and August forks are concentrated. Whether employees clustered their stars is unverified. | Inferred |
| HN / Product Hunt / big X accounts / media | Neither our HN nor PH databases have it; x-radar has no posts about pinvou in the last 120 days; no media coverage found | None |
Growth rhythm: cold start on LINUX DO in late July → overseas repost accounts followed in August (around 854 stars in mid-August, 210 forks in August) → a steady tail of a dozen or two stars a day from 9 to November, sustained by fast releases, a good README, and aggregator pickups.
4. Competitors
| Competitors | Where | Timeline | Scale | How Pinvou differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| WorkBuddy (Tencent) | Big-company features / desktop | 2026 H1 | A big-company product; the initiator himself admits it's a first mover | Closed source, tied to Tencent Cloud models; Pinvou is open source and can connect to local vLLM |
| CoPaw (Alibaba) | Open-source / desktop | 2026 | Covered by OSCHINA | Focused on personal assistant via IM; Pinvou focuses on turning results into files + design patterns + ACP coding |
| LobsterAI (NetEase Youdao) | Open source | About 2026-02 | 6,169 star | Nearly the same positioning (desktop Agent for data analysis and PPT), built on Electron; Pinvou uses Tauri/Rust with local models first |
| UI-TARS-desktop (ByteDance) | Open source | 2025 | 39,554 star | Operates the computer through vision; Pinvou works through tools/MCP/files |
| cc-haha | Open source | About 2026-03 | 15,318 star | A desktop shell for Claude Code, leaning toward programming; Pinvou targets non-engineer office users |
| Ekko Studio | Open source | About 2026-04 | 11,695 star | Multi-agent chat + coding + visualization, very similar; no hardware binding |
| ClawX / OpenClaw desktop shells | Open source | 2026 first | 7,600 star | A GUI wrapped around OpenClaw; Pinvou ships its own engine (a CodeWhale fork) |
| hello-halo | Open source | 2026 first | 1,912 stars, +147 in the last 7 days | 7×24 desktop Agent, also with remote control |
| Claude Desktop / Cowork, Codex App | Big-company features | 2025–2026 | huge | Tied to its own models and closed source; Pinvou can connect to any OpenAI-compatible endpoint and has built-in templates for domestic Chinese models |
| nomifun-desktop, Kition, MyAgents, Apache Maka, etc. | Open source | 2026 | Hundreds to 6k stars | Same category, a whole crowd |
Bottom line: the track is very crowded. Big Chinese companies (Tencent, Alibaba, NetEase, ByteDance) and dozens of open-source shells are all building "desktop AI Agent workbenches". Within open source, Pinvou is only mid-tier.
5. Differentiation
- A hardware + local-model loop: a built-in model store (download weights, deploy, monitor running status), GPU/memory/context monitoring, and one-click local vLLM integration. This is tailored for local compute like MegaCube. Other desktop Agents mostly default to cloud models.
- Xinchuang / domestic office ecosystem: ships LoongArch64 debs (UOS V25, deepin 23), with ready-made connectors for Feishu, DingTalk, WeCom, Tencent Meeting, Tencent Docs, ima, Qichacha, and PatSnap; templates cover DeepSeek, Kimi, Qwen, Doubao, MiniMax, GLM, and MiMo. This is the configuration for government and enterprise and park customers.
- "Three ways of working" in one app: Work delivers files, Design produces posters and charts you can keep editing, and Code connects to Codex / Claude Code / Kimi via ACP.
- Engineering completeness: Tauri/Rust keeps the size small, releases come almost twice a week, and there are ADRs, an SBOM, a fork policy, and trademark notes. It has a very "big-company open source" feel.
Is differentiation why it took off? Not entirely. The stars mostly came from the generic "open source + community posts + repost accounts" playbook, plus the engineering investment and release cadence of a big-company team. The local hardware loop and xinchuang (domestic IT) compatibility are its real moat, but those serve H3C's government and enterprise hardware customers, which GitHub stars don't capture. Downloads on GitHub are this low, which suggests actual usage among open-source users is limited.
6. Visibility
- Revenue: no public revenue, and no software fees (MIT, free). The money comes from selling MegaCube hardware and solutions.
- Buzz: it's circulating in small circles. One LINUX DO post, a few overseas repost accounts, and aggregator sites. HN, PH, big X accounts, and media have none.
- Copycats: none specifically copying it. Many similar products exist, but they were built separately at the same time rather than following it.
7. What others can learn
- Hardware / cloud vendors using open-source Agents as a customer acquisition funnel: a free, open-source desktop Agent first solves "how to actually use local models", then funnels users to their own compute. GPU appliance, NAS, and AI PC makers can copy this.
- A LINUX DO "open-source promotion" post plus friendly links in the README keeps cold-start costs very low; a strong English README gets reposted by overseas accounts on its own.
- Domestic office connectors (Feishu, DingTalk, WeCom, Tencent Docs) + domestic model templates + a Xinchuang architecture package let it hold ground that overseas products don't cover.
8. Still unclear
- How much of the stars come from company insiders / ecosystem partners (the stargazers API isn't available, so it can't be verified); download numbers from the pinvou.com channel; MegaCube sales, and how much 品悟 actually helps hardware sales; whether H3C officially promotes 品悟 as a product line (it's in the official site nav, but I couldn't find a launch event or press release).
