# Code-Codex: a Windows add-on that restores the file tree to the Codex desktop app. Only a few hundred of its 1,500 stars are real users

**What it is** An unofficial Windows mini-program that injects a full project file tree, file preview, and editing into the Codex desktop app, plus a marketplace of plugins for changing backgrounds and adding opening animations.

**Why it took off** Users kept complaining after the official version dropped the file tree, and July's skinning craze taught a group of people to add plugins to Codex. It caught both. But the star surge after mid-October was mostly manufactured.

**C** **How you could ride this** Don't build another Codex file tree. Copy the playbook: watch for features that a big AI client has just removed or left out, patch them in via injection within the first month or two, make the core free with plugins on top, and post in the official community and in the help threads of the issue tracker.

Grade C: the demand is real but narrow, real users number only a few hundred, and most stars were bought. It patches a gap the official product has partly restored, and the skinning path is taken by a repo with 15k stars, so following it won't earn real stars. What's worth learning is the playbook. Few people know about it yet

In May 2026 7, a Windows user posted in the OpenAI developer community: his delivery docs were sitting in `D:\...\docs\delivery-docs`, the files were fine on disk, but the right-hand panel of Codex Desktop (26.429 build) only showed "Review / changed files," so unmodified files were invisible. OpenAI support replied that it had been passed to the team, with no timeline. Two and a half months later, a Chinese developer named Ricedo (@Rice-dog) built Code-Codex, forcing the file tree back into Codex. By Nov 6 it had 1,490 stars, but judging by fork accounts and download counts, only a few hundred people actually use it. It's worth studying as an example of how to add features to a big company's AI client, but not really worth copying.

### What it is

A Windows-only unofficial helper. Once installed, it injects a TypeScript-built UI into the official Codex Desktop through the debug port (CDP): a full project file tree on the left, with right-click create, rename, delete, and drag-and-drop; clicking a file opens a preview tab with syntax highlighting and limited editing. Later it added Office, PDF, 3D model, notebook preview, and read-only Git history.

The first README line reads "Adds a local project file tree, preview tabs, and limited editing to Codex Desktop," followed by a prominent notice: "Code-Codex is not affiliated with OpenAI." It is MIT-licensed and free, and the author has only this one repo on GitHub.

The engineering is heavy. About 55 versions shipped in the 100 days since the repo was created; the current version is v0.5.89. It has a branded installer, in-app auto-update, SHA-256 verification, and diagnostic codes. During install it takes over and backs up your original Codex shortcut, and restores it on uninstall. Starting Oct 8, it split every feature into plugins loaded on demand. The marketplace now has 16 appearance plugins (animated backgrounds, opening animations, transparency, "Shallow Sea Letter"), 10 file-preview plugins, and 1 Git history tools.

### The demand is real: the official product removed the file tree itself

An early-May Codex Desktop update made the full file tree disappear for some users. The OpenAI community post "Bring Back the File Explorer Button in Codex" 5-01, the V2EX 5-09 thread "How do I show the project file tree in the Codex desktop sidebar?" (quote: "I remember all files showed before May Day"), and the LINUX DO 5-11 thread "The directory structure no longer shows on the right side of codex" are all about the same thing. The openai/codex repo also has a string of issues requesting the file tree, running from March through October.

Code-Codex was created in Jul 29. Its first few versions were each downloaded only 5 to 18 times, so the start was quiet.

### Second wave: riding the "Codex skin" trend

In mid-July, skinning Codex Desktop suddenly became popular in the Chinese community. The technique is identical to Code-Codex's, also CDP injection. The leader, Fei-Away/Codex-Dream-Skin, was created on 7-15 and now has 15,349 stars. A Zhihu article titled "Over 1w+ stars! Codex custom skins have caught fire" covered it. A string of skin repos with dozens to hundreds of stars followed.

This wave did two things for Code-Codex. It taught a group of Chinese users that Codex can take add-ons, and it showed the technical route works. Code-Codex began adding appearance features in late September: animated backgrounds, opening animations, and login-page backgrounds, one after another. By downloads, appearance is the part people use most. In the v0.3.96 release, each background plugin was downloaded about 240 to 280 times, the 10-18 plugin package was downloaded 849 times, and the main installer got only 15 downloads in the same period (GitHub Release download counts). In other words, most downloads came from existing users updating and pulling plugins inside the app, and new users arrived in small numbers.

### The 1,500 stars: how many are real?

By GitHub's daily numbers, from late September to mid-October it gained only 5 to 19 stars a day. From 10-16 it suddenly accelerated: 10-18 +70, 10-19 +61. Another wave came from 10-26, with 10-31 gaining +108,11-01 and +99 in a single day. 11-06 is at 1,490 stars, +345 over the last 7 days.

The fork numbers tell the story. 10-16 It had 563 stars and 6 forks; three weeks later it had over 120 forks, and the fork-to-star ratio jumped from 1% to 8%. Of those fork accounts, 116 were created between 2026 and October 8 — 30 of the newest were checked, and they look identical: Western small-town locations (Medicine Hat, AB; Juneau, AK; Dundee, UK), bios in the format "job + two hobbies", like "Electrician. baking and astronomy.", with 2 to 10 repos each, all forks. The same accounts also fork and star a batch of smaller Chinese repos, including codex-account-switcher, which shows the same obvious boosting. This looks like a pool of accounts serving several paying clients.

GitHub no longer lets you see the star list directly, so "the stars are bought" is an inference from the fork accounts — a strong one, but still an inference. Real usage has to be read from download counts: each stable release has 100 to 320 cumulative downloads (v0.5.21: 317 downloads, v0.5.89: 251 downloads), which suggests a few hundred active installs. The issues and PRs do show some real users: someone reported an install failure for Chinese usernames, someone reported a debug-port compatibility bug, two people submitted background plugins, 10-31 and someone opened a PR for a macOS port.

Almost no buzz outside the store: in the last 120 days, searches for the library name and author name on X turned up 0 posts, and I found no dedicated recommendations on Zhihu, Bilibili, Xiaohongshu, or WeChat Official Accounts. It also never charted on GitHub Trending.

### Who it's competing with

| Name | Scale | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| Codex Desktop's official "Open file" panel | All Codex users | Partially restored around October: a file tree and preview side by side, but it takes up width and is mostly read-only |
| Fei-Away/Codex-Dream-Skin | 15,349 stars | Pure reskin, supports Mac and Windows; no file tree |
| HeiGeAi/heige-codex-skin-studio | 504 stars | Anime / IP-themed reskins |
| Reskin libraries like zhulin025/Codex-QQ-Skin | 50–600 stars | A reskin generator with no practical features |
| RyensX/OpenCodex | 729 stars | Lets you use Codex Desktop remotely from a phone or another computer; a different direction |
| serein431/Codex-Mate | 151 stars | A launcher plus a maintenance toolbox with a simple file tree; no plugin marketplace |
| HuSiyue-ai/file-workspace | 2 stars | Similar sidebar file workspaces that only appeared 10-24 |
| The Codex plugin for VS Code / Cursor | Very large | Editors already ship a full file tree, which is the "just skip the desktop app" route |

On the "Codex add-on" path, the reskins took most of the stars and attention. Code-Codex is the only one that built out the file tree deeply and added a plugin marketplace, but the official app is gradually filling the gap it targets.

### If it were you

**C.** The need is real and the author is capable, but most of the 1,500 stars were bought, and real users number in the hundreds. The gap it fills has already been partly restored by the official October update, and the reskin lane was taken early by a library with 15k stars. Building another Codex file-tree or reskin add-on will struggle to earn real stars.

**Who it's for** : people who want to learn the playbook of "adding features to a big AI desktop client." Features the vendor removed or never built get added via Electron / CDP injection, and single features are structured as "core + on-demand plugins + in-app updates," which keeps existing users and lets the community contribute plugins. The structure transfers to other clients.

**Who it's not for** : anyone trying to collect stars on the Codex add-on path (the file tree is being taken back by the vendor and reskins are already crowded); Mac-only users (it only supports Windows); anyone planning to buy stars to lift a project (the fork ratio jumping from 1% to 8% overnight, bios from one template, is easy to spot and will not look good on a résumé).

**How to build it** : stop building another Codex file tree. Watch for the next feature a major vendor just removed or visibly lacks. After each big release of Claude Desktop, ChatGPT Desktop, or Cursor, check the official community and issues to see which missing feature gets the most complaints and which ones get the reply "no timeline." Ship a working version within the first few weeks of the thread appearing, and support Mac and Windows from the start, which is where Code-Codex lost ground. If you want to stay in the Codex ecosystem, it's more useful to contribute a macOS port to Code-Codex or a plugin to Codex-Dream-Skin, and earn real reputation that way.

**How to get users** : go back to where the demand first appeared. Reply on the OpenAI community thread asking for a file tree, on V2EX, and on the similar LINUX DO threads, leave links in the relevant official issues, and include a before/after screenshot. Code-Codex did none of this, which is why it is almost impossible to find off GitHub.

**Deadline** : the day the big vendor fills the gap, this kind of add-on disappears. The window between the vendor removing the file tree and partly restoring it was about five months for Code-Codex. Time the next opportunity on the same rhythm: launch within one to two months of the gap appearing.

**Signs this read is wrong** : ① over the next month its new releases reach thousands of downloads each, or organic recommendation posts appear off GitHub, which would mean real users outnumber my estimate; ② the official Codex Desktop never gets a proper file tree on Windows, and its user base keeps growing; ③ star growth holds at dozens per week after the boosting stops.

## Rice-dog/code-codex research report

Research date: 2026-11-06 | Channel: GitHub | Repo: [github.com/Rice-dog/code-codex](https://github.com/Rice-dog/code-codex)

### One line

Code-Codex is an unofficial Windows add-on that uses the CDP debug port to inject TypeScript UI into OpenAI's Codex Desktop, adding a local project file tree, file preview, and limited editing. It later grew into a plugin marketplace with 16 appearance plugins (dynamic backgrounds, intro animations, transparency), 10 file-preview plugins, and 1 read-only Git history tools. The author, Ricedo (@Rice-dog), is a Chinese developer with this as their only GitHub repo, and the README defaults to Chinese.

### Verdict

Two real demand waves support it:

- **The official Codex Desktop removed the full file tree in 2026 May** , and Windows users reacted most strongly;

- **The Chinese-language "Codex reskin" boom of 2026 July** .

But the acceleration since mid-October (daily gains going from 10 to 40–108) carries clear signs of bought stars and forks: 129 forks, 116 of them from accounts registered between 2026 and October 8 with templated English persona bios, and these same accounts are batch-starring the same set of small Chinese repos. So the star count can't be taken as real interest. Real usage is likely in the range of a few hundred active installs, based on per-release downloads and plugin-asset downloads.

### 1. Where the demand came from: the official file tree was removed

- 2026-05-01, an OpenAI community post, "Feature Request: Bring Back the File Explorer Button in Codex," reported that the file browsing button had disappeared. 05-07 a Windows user (Codex Desktop 26.429) added that the right side only showed Review / changed files, and unchanged files were invisible. OpenAI support replied that it had been "passed to the team, with no timeline." Source: [community.openai.com/t/feature-request-bring-back-the-file-e…](https://community.openai.com/t/feature-request-bring-back-the-file-explorer-button-in-codex/1380166)

- The Chinese community was asking at the same time. V2EX 2026-05-09 has a post, "How do I show the project file tree in the sidebar of the Codex desktop app?" whose original text says "I remember that before May Day you could show all files" (https://www.v2ex.com/t/1211373, reposted via sechub.in). LINUX DO 2026-05-11 has a post, "codex's right side no longer shows the file directory structure" (https://linux.do/t/topic/2155356).

- The openai/codex repo has a string of related issues: #13646 (03-06, asking for a directory view on Windows), #19785, #20984 (05-04, file tree entry disappeared), #34701 (07-22, sidebar file tree), and #50257 (10-02, a Chinese user asking for a "files-only mode"). From the description of #50257, by October the official app had a panel with the file tree and preview side by side, but it was cramped and hard to use. So the gap Code-Codex fills at its core is narrowing.

- The author created the repo on 2026-07-29. The first release had very few downloads: each v0.1.x release got 5–18 downloads.

### 2. Second wave: riding the Codex reskin boom

- In mid-July 2026, a reskin boom for the Codex desktop app swept the Chinese community. The technical route was CDP injection, same as Code-Codex. Representative projects and star counts (GitHub API, 2026-11-06):
    - Fei-Away/Codex-Dream-Skin: 15,349 stars, created 07-15. Zhihu has an article, "Over 1w+ stars! Codex custom skins take off," and Tencent Cloud has one, "An open-source project gains 4.4K stars in a day."
    - HeiGeAi/heige-codex-skin-studio: 504 stars.
    - zhulin025/Codex-QQ-Skin: 585 stars.
    - CodeDrobe/skills: 252 stars.
    - There are also many copycat repos with a few dozen stars each.

- Code-Codex started pushing cosmetic features hard from v0.3.x (late September): animated backgrounds, Blinking Squares, transparency, login-page backgrounds, intro animations, "Shallow Sea Letters", and more. From 10-08 onward, every feature was split into plugins downloaded on demand. Going by download counts, the cosmetic plugins are its most practical entry point:
    - In that v0.3.96 release, each background JS asset was downloaded roughly 240–280 times;
    - plugin-assets-2026-10-18 was downloaded 849 times;
    - in the same period, the main installer setup.exe got only 15 downloads. This suggests most downloads come from in-app updates and plugin pulls by existing users, not new installs.

- In other words, what it sells now is a bundle of "file tree + reskin + preview", not just a file tree.

### 3. Growth data and evidence of inflated numbers

**Star curve (data card and trendshift.io/repositories/131775)**

- From September to mid-October, it gained 5–19 stars a day.

- It sped up from 10-15: 10-16 +39, 10-18 +70, 10-19 +61.

- Starting 10-26, another round: +46, +52,10-31 hitting +108,11-01 +99 in a single day.

- In the last 7 days, +345 (+7 in the first 305 days), bringing the 11-06 total to 1,514 stars.

**Abnormal fork structure (checked live via GitHub API)**

- At 10-16, 563 stars and 6 forks; at 11-06, 124–129 forks. The fork/star ratio jumped from about 1% to about 8%.

- Of the 129 fork accounts, 116 were registered in 2026 between 8 and October; 13 were older accounts.

- Spot-checking the 30 most recent fork accounts, they all follow the same template:
    - Western small-town place names (Medicine Hat, AB / Juneau, AK / Dundee, UK...);
    - bios built from "occupation + two hobbies", e.g. "Electrician. baking and astronomy.";
    - only 2–10 public repos, all forks.

- These accounts (such as slopsvalise4g, putter39-emery, gears-sparky2s) fork and star the same set of small Chinese projects: ling-stack, ai-draw, miner, yzlin286-wq/Deepscient, Alice-Marx/dsh-model-router, shx2005/codex-account-switcher, and others. This is a typical paid-acquisition account pool serving multiple clients.

- The timing of these fork accounts (79 in October, 36 in November) overlaps with the star surges. The stargazer list couldn't be retrieved this time (REST returned 404, GraphQL returned an empty list), so the share of stars that were bought can't be counted directly. But forks were clearly gamed at scale, and the star surges very likely came from the same pool.

**Indirect evidence of real usage**

- Cumulative downloads per stable release were around 100–320: v0.5.21 317, v0.5.40 231, v0.5.89 251. These mostly come from in-app updates, so the active install base is probably in the low hundreds.

- The issues and PRs show a small number of real outside contributors:
    - chengchengcheng752 reported an install failure under a non-ASCII username;
    - loveheck reported a CDP compatibility issue;
    - HCOOKIEie and Witherwithwinter submitted background plugins;
    - oas1s050317 10-31 submitted a macOS porting PR. So there is a small group of real Chinese users and contributors.

### 4. Competitors

| Name | Channel | Launched | Scale | How it differs from Code-Codex |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Codex Desktop's official file tree / preview panel | Big-company features | Existed early on, was removed at 2026-05, and came back around October as an "Open file" panel (see #50257) | All Codex users | Native and official, but limited in width and mostly read-only; Code-Codex adds right-click file ops, drag and drop, editing, and multi-format previews |
| Fei-Away/Codex-Dream-Skin | Open source | 2026-07-15 | 15,349 stars | Pure reskin, Mac + Windows; Code-Codex supports only Windows but adds a file tree and preview |
| HeiGeAi/heige-codex-skin-studio | Open source | 2026-07-15 | 504 stars | 13 anime/IP themes; Code-Codex focuses on animated backgrounds and intro animations |
| zhulin025/Codex-QQ-Skin, CodeDrobe/skills, Finderchangchang/codex-autoskin, etc. | Open source | Mid-2026-07 | 50–600 stars | Reskin skills / generators; no file tree |
| serein431/Codex-Mate | Open source | 2026-05-10 | 151 stars | Codex launcher + maintenance toolkit; one commit added a project file tree; no plugin marketplace |
| RyensX/OpenCodex | Open source | 2026-05-15 | 729 stars | A middle layer that lets a phone or another computer access Codex Desktop remotely; different direction |
| HuSiyue-ai/file-workspace | Open source | 2026-10-24 | 2 stars | Also builds a sidebar file workspace (Markdown, PDF, CSV preview), but later and barely used |
| zhongerxin/ProjectLens | Open source | 2026-05-08 | 12 stars | Early attempts in the same category |
| The Codex plugin for VS Code / Cursor | Big-company features | Already there | Very large | Already had a full file tree; an alternative to "not using the desktop app" |

### 5. Acquisition channels

- **Organic search and word of mouth from gaps in official features (confirmed)** : people asking for a file tree in the OpenAI community, V2EX, and LINUX DO. Code-Codex's README and aggregator pages like airanks.app and gitrank.cc surface for these searches.

- **Spillover traffic from the reskin craze (inferred)** : after the reskin boom in July, users searching "Codex skins / animated backgrounds" would see it along the way. Its feature roadmap clearly tracks that wave.

- **Bought stars / forks (forks confirmed as gamed, stars inferred)** : see section 3.

- **X / media (none found)** : in the x-radar corpus, searches for "Code-Codex / code-codex / Rice-dog" over 120 days returned 0 results each; no dedicated coverage found on Zhihu, Bilibili, Xiaohongshu, or WeChat Official Accounts. It never made the trendshift top 25 or GitHub trending (repo age 100 days, past the 60-day threshold).

### 6. Why it took off (and how far it went)

1. The official 2026-05 removed the full file tree, Windows users had a real pain point, and the official team didn't fix it for a long time.

2. The CDP-injection reskinning in July went viral, cultivating a group of Chinese users willing to install a "Codex add-on" and validating the technical approach.

3. The author iterates extremely fast: roughly 55 releases in about 100 days, now at version 0.5.89. They also built a plugin marketplace, in-app updates, diagnostic codes, and a branded installer, making it the most engineered project in its category.

4. The star surge after mid-October largely came from a paid-acquisition account pool, not organic growth.

### 7. Differentiation

- It's an all-in-one enhancement layer of "file tree + preview / editing + reskin", with a plugin marketplace that verifies SHA-256. Reskin competitors only handle looks; Codex-Mate-type tools only handle launching and maintenance. It's the only one that builds out the file tree in depth (right-click create/edit/delete, drag and drop, minimap, Office/PDF/3D/Notebook previews, read-only Git diff).

- This differentiation did attract a real group of Chinese Windows users, which downloads and external PRs support. But the scale is only in the hundreds. Most of the 1,500 stars' "heat" was manufactured, not earned by the differentiation.

- There are two risks: the official panel was partly restored around October, so the core gap is narrowing; and it only supports Windows, with the macOS version still at the community PR stage.

### 8. Visibility

Few people know about it yet: no discussion on X, no media coverage, no public revenue (the project is MIT-licensed and free). The one that really took off in the reskin category was Codex-Dream-Skin.

### 9. What to learn from it

- Watch for "features major desktop AI clients removed or never shipped" and fill them with CDP / Electron injection. The July reskins and this file tree both show that Chinese developers will install this kind of add-on.

- Turning a single feature into "core + on-demand plugin marketplace + in-app updates" keeps existing users and makes it easy for the community to contribute plugins.

- Ride a trend: layering a practical feature (file tree) on a route that's already hot (reskinning) gets more visibility than building either one alone.

- Cautionary lesson: bought forks leave very obvious traces (abrupt fork-ratio changes, templated accounts), which are easy to spot.

### 10. Uncertain

- The actual share of stars that were faked: the stargazer list couldn't be retrieved, so accounts can't be checked one by one.

- Whether recommendation videos on Xiaohongshu, Douyin, or Bilibili brought real traffic: none found, which doesn't mean none existed.

- How complete the official Codex file tree panel is on Windows right now, and whether it will soon make this project redundant.

- Who the author is and whether they plan to monetize: it's completely free for now, with no paid tier.
