> Stringers answers one question every day: what small product can one or two people build in a few months and actually make money from. Numbers come from 15 databases we collect daily, each with source and date.
> For agents: these verdicts and the underlying databases (verified revenue, App Store / Google Play charts, ad libraries, GitHub, Product Hunt…) are queryable live over MCP — tools today / hot / products / directions / direction / data. # The "free open-source SEO tool" with 8,800 stars is really a SaaS landing page: copy its README, not its stars

**What it is** A set of SEO skills for Claude (site audits, keywords, rank tracking, backlinks, AI search visibility, and more). All of it needs to connect to Ryze's own hosted service, which sits behind a paid product at $89 to $1,499 a month.

**Why it took off** Developers didn't find it on their own. The founder's three repos were forked and starred in bulk by a batch of newly registered accounts, starting from the name next to open-seo's 26.5k stars, then spread through directory sites that sort by stars and the company's usual Reddit and LinkedIn posts.

**C** **What you can do** Don't build another SEO skill pack. Study the "why this exists" section of its README, the comparison tables in popular projects, and how it names itself and gets into listings. If you really want to do SEO, build a fully local version with no service lock-in that reads your own Search Console and GA4 directly.

Grade C: the stars were pushed by ads and one company's marketing machine, which doesn't mean the spot is empty. Top projects in the same category already have 26k to 59k stars, while the non-lock-in projects with the same selling point have only 604. The README and distribution are worth learning from, but copying the product isn't worth it. What people in the niche are saying

Data (updated daily) · Repo created 2026-08-29 · 8,910 stars · 7 days +565

GitHub · stars

Data 2026-10-09 → 2026-11-08 (31 days, 31 observations). Points before 10-28 come from deeply / archive backfill, not every day has one

open-seo-mcp-skills is 8 Claude SEO skills that Ryze AI put on GitHub, and it picked up 8,872 stars in 69 days. The repo is only a few Markdown files and a single `claude mcp add` line, with all data going through Ryze's hosted service at $89 to $1,499 a month. Most of the stars didn't come from developers finding it: the same founder's three repos were forked by a batch of new accounts on the same day, and they rose and fell together. If you want your open-source project to earn stars, you can learn a README and naming approach here, but rebuilding another SEO skill pack won't get you these stars.

### "Claude just killed our startup"

In 2026 Feb 23, Ryze AI founder Ira Bodnar posted on X with exactly this headline. She said the company had gained several hundred paying customers in two months, and then one Claude update made the product obsolete. Benzinga, Yahoo Finance, and the Times of India all rewrote it. In that post she made a claim: MCP is the new App Store, Claude picks tools through MCP, and users never see the other options (Yahoo Finance 2026-02-26 via Benzinga).

That line became Ryze's strategy. The company pivoted to "put our hosted MCP into Claude, ChatGPT, and Cursor," and opened several instruction-style repos on GitHub at once:

| Repo | Repo created | star(11-06) | Item |
|---|---|---|---|
| irinabuht12-oss/marketing-skills | 2026-01-21 | 6,874 | 49 marketing skills + Ryze MCP |
| irinabuht12-oss/google-ads-meta-ads-mcp | 2026-04-06 | 7,014 | Hosted ad-MCP instruction page |
| Ryze-AI-Adgent/open-seo-mcp-skills | 2026-08-29 | 8,872 | The subject of this article |
| irinabuht12-oss/email-campaigns-claude | 2026-04-14 | 163 | The same person, the one that didn't get pushed |

The three pushed repos total about 22.7k stars. From late August to early September she also forked 7 awesome-mcp-servers-style list repos, planning to submit PRs to get herself listed.

### What's actually in the repo

8 skills: site audit, keyword research, rank tracking, competitor keyword gaps, backlinks, AI search visibility, content outlines, and "the keywords you pay for already rank organically." Plus a Claude plugin config, an install script, and a banner image. No server-side code.

Every skill calls `https://connector.get-ryze.ai/mcp`, and the data comes from "your Ryze workspace." The README says:

> "No subscription for the tool. No markup on API calls. The skills are MIT — take them, change them, ship them."

The tool is free, but the data isn't. The connector sits behind Ryze's plans: Paid Ads $89, SEO Starter $129 (3-day trial), Agency $279, up to $1,499 (get-ryze.ai pricing page). Every link in the README carries `utm_source=github&utm_content=open-seo-mcp-skills`, and the banner and first-screen button both point to "one-click connect to Ryze." Of the repo's 16 commits, all were by the founder, and about half were edits to the banner and button copy. It's a landing page, just hosted on GitHub.

Its pitch is clever. The opening section is titled "Why this exists": most of the "open-source SEO tools" making the rounds are just a UI over the DataForSEO API, so you either pay the API fees yourself or pay a hosted subscription plus roughly 28% markup on every call. "The code is free. The data never is." Its claim is that rankings come straight from your own Google Search Console positions, traffic comes from your real GA4 numbers, and visits from ChatGPT and Perplexity count too. That point is valid, but others are making it too.

### Where the 8,800 stars came from

**First, a batch of accounts registered the same day.** 77% of this repo's forks landed in three days: 18 on Sep 107, 19 on 146, and 20 on 76, with every other day between 0 and 8 (per the GitHub API, checked on 11-06). Sister repos show the same identical spike at the same time: marketing-skills at 73/119/54, and the ad-MCP repo at 93/132/66. Of 40 fork accounts sampled from those days, nearly all had 0 followers and one to four public repos. Of the 8 examined closely, 6 were registered in those days and had forked only these three Ryze repos and starred only these three. Another 2 accounts can no longer be opened, possibly banned by GitHub. This is the classic look of paid crowdsourced inflation ("do tasks for money"). Whether Ryze bought it or it came in through a task platform, there's no direct evidence.

**Second, three repos rising and falling together.** Since Oct 28, the SEO, marketing, and ads repos, each on a different topic, have gained nearly in lockstep every day. For example, on 11-02 to 11-03 they gained 202, 143, and 134, then the next day dropped to 31, 48, and 39 together (GitHub daily star counts). Meanwhile email-campaigns-claude, which wasn't pushed, went from 161 to 163 over the same period. Repos that developers discover on their own don't move like this. How many of the stars were bought can't be measured, since GitHub doesn't publish the full list of starrers. But with the fork data and the synchronized curves side by side, coordinated promotion is nearly certain, though some real traffic may be mixed in.

Another number checks out: comparable projects typically have forks at 13% to 15% of their stars (coreyhaines31/marketingskills 14.6%, AgriciDaniel/claude-seo 13%, every-app/open-seo 13.7%). This repo sits at 4.5%, and once the batch forks from those three days are removed, it's about 1%. Very few people actually take it and modify it.

**Third, naming itself after a 26.5k-star project.** `every-app/open-seo` is an "open-source Semrush" that came out in February this year, with 26.5k stars. Ryze's repo is called open-seo-mcp-skills, and the first column of its comparison table is "OpenSEO-style wrappers." The effect is visible: a page on ai-tldr.dev titled "OpenSEO: the open-source Semrush alternative on GitHub" actually describes these 8 Ryze skills, merging the two projects into one.

**Fourth, directory sites and sponsored posts.** Skill and MCP directories like SkillsLLM, aiinity, and agentskillindex list it. Most of these sort by stars, so more stars means higher placement, and higher placement brings more stars. The company already runs a sponsored-content playbook: the same Reddit title, "I connected Ryze AI to the 23 … I manage," was posted in at least 5 versions in January; a September post had zero-width characters in its title, apparently to dodge keyword filters; LinkedIn has a batch of differently signed posts calling Ryze the "best Meta Ads MCP" of 2026; and its own blog post "16 Google Ads MCPs tested" puts itself first. Ryze sells getting AI search to cite you, and it does the same for itself (inferred). A GitHub repo with 8,800 stars is the piece of this setup that AI and Google take most seriously.

Genuine organic spread is rare. On YouTube, only one small channel with 282 subscribers covered it, with 74 views (10-04). Searching X for the repo name and company domain turns up nothing, and HN has nothing. The star curve is flattening: +933 over the last 7 days, versus +1,522 over the first 7 days.

### Who else is doing the same thing

| Project | star(11-06) | Compared with alternatives |
|---|---|---|
| coreyhaines31/marketingskills | 58.7k | Pure skills, no service lock-in, made trending |
| AgriciDaniel/claude-seo | 26.9k, +3,009 over 7 days | 26 sub-skills + 19 sub-agents, runs locally, bring your own key |
| every-app/open-seo | 26.5k | Self-hostable Semrush alternative, riding its name and called out by it |
| zubair-trabzada/geo-seo-claude | 11.5k | Pure skills focused on AI search optimization |
| googleanalytics/google-analytics-mcp | 3.65k | Official GA4 MCP, free, you configure your own credentials |
| AminForou/mcp-gsc | 2.1k | Connects directly to Search Console, self-hosted |
| iannuttall/seo | 604 | Also focused on giving agents real GSC/GA data, no service lock-in, and it came out earlier |

The last row says the most: the selling point of "your own real data" has no bulk-inflated stars or company behind it. iannuttall/seo reached 604 stars on that alone. That's probably how much the idea itself is worth in stars.

### If it were you

**One-line verdict:** Don't copy this into an SEO skill pack. Projects with 26k to 59k stars already occupy this space. Its 8,800 stars were bought, and they don't mean the spot is open. What you can take away is how its README is written.

**Who it's for:** Developers who already have a real open-source project that isn't getting stars, and want to learn how to write a first screen, pick a name, and get into directories. Or small teams with a paid service who want to use GitHub as an acquisition channel.

**Who it's not for:** Anyone hoping to get stars by building "yet another Claude SEO skill," or anyone who wants to copy the fork-and-star inflation. Bulk accounts are already being banned, the real fork rate is only 1%, and comparing it with similar projects exposes it right away. Being exposed is worse than having no stars at all.

**How to do it:**

1. Copy its "Why this exists" section: first name a popular approach's flaw ("code is free, data never is"), then in one short section explain why you exist as the alternative.

2. Copy its comparison table: put the most popular competitor and a big-vendor option in their own columns, and list the rows you win.

3. Choose a name close to a term people are already searching for, but not so close that you look like the same project. On the first screen, show a three-line install, then a copy-paste prompt ("run an SEO audit on mysite.com").

4. If you insist on an SEO direction, build the part Ryze won't: a fully local version with no service lock-in that reads your own Search Console and GA4 directly, and package the AI-search referral traffic in GA4 as a standalone skill. iannuttall/seo's 604 stars show where this path currently stands.

**How to get users:** Submit PRs to listing repos like awesome-mcp-servers, submit to directory sites like SkillsLLM. That's the free step Ryze used, open to anyone. Then answer questions like "how do I let Claude read my Search Console" on Reddit's r/ClaudeAI and r/SEO, linking the repo.

**When to do it:** No rush. The top spots in this SEO skills wave are already taken, so waiting a month or two makes no difference; learning how to write a good README can happen anytime.

**What would mean I've got it wrong:** If over the next month a project like iannuttall/seo, which doesn't tie to a service and gets no promotion, also climbs to thousands of stars, that shows there's real demand and the top spot isn't locked yet, and then it's worth seriously building #4. If Ryze's three repos lose a big chunk of stars to GitHub cleanup, that shows star-botting has been caught, and there's even less reason to touch it.

## Ryze-AI-Adgent/open-seo-mcp-skills: why it took off

> Research day 2026-11-06. Sources: our GitHub repo database (repo_profile / repo_snap), GitHub API live queries (commits, fork lists, fork account profiles), Jina / Brave web search, the local x-radar X corpus.

### Bottom line

This is not an open-source project that developers found on the strength of the product itself. It's the **customer-acquisition landing page** of SaaS company Ryze AI (paid ads / SEO automation, $89–1,499/month): the repo contains only 8 Markdown skill files plus one `claude mcp add` line pointing to its own hosted connector. The 8.8k stars mainly come from a **three-part playbook** : (1) three repos under the same founder were batch-forked and starred in sync (2026-09-18–20, over three days this repo gained 329 forks from accounts registered that same day, with 0 followers, forking only these three Ryze repos); (2) a name that rides the 26.5k-star `every-app/open-seo`, plus mass placement on skills / MCP directory sites; (3) the company was already seeding "reviews" and "best X" posts on Reddit and LinkedIn, and GitHub is just another channel for the same GEO (getting AI search to cite yourself) play. Star counts largely don't reflect developers actually using it.

### 1. What it is

- Repo contents: 8 SEO/GEO skills under `skills/` (seo-audit, keyword-research, rank-tracking, competitor-gap, backlink-check, ai-visibility, content-brief, seo-vs-ads), plus `.claude-plugin`, `install.sh`, and a banner image. No server-side code (directory listed via GitHub API, 2026-11-06).

- Every skill depends on `https://connector.get-ryze.ai/mcp`, and data flows through "your Ryze workspace". The README says "free / MIT / No subscription for the tool," but behind the connector sits a paid Ryze plan: Paid Ads $89, SEO Starter $129 (3-day trial), Agency $279, Traffic Printer $599, Shopify CRO $1,499 (get-ryze.ai/pricing).

- Every README link carries `utm_source=github&utm_content=open-seo-mcp-skills` (commit 2026-10-27: "Tag Ryze links with utm_source=github and the repo name"), and the banner and badges all point to a "connect guide" (commit 2026-10-23). All 16 commits come from Ira Bodnar, about half of them changing the banner and CTA.

- Selling point (README comparison table): other "open-source SEO tools" are just a shell over DataForSEO, so you pay the API fees yourself or get marked up roughly 28%; this one uses your own GSC real rankings, GA4 real traffic (including referrals from ChatGPT / Perplexity), and Google Ads keyword data, with DataForSEO built in.

### 2. The person and company behind it

- Ira Bodnar (GitHub `irinabuht12-oss`, company field Ryze AI; X @irabukht, bio "used by 4k marketers"). 2026-02-23 posted "Claude just killed our startup" on X, which Benzinga / Yahoo Finance, Times of India and Medium rewrote, claiming a few hundred paying customers in two months, Claude making the product obsolete, and a pivot. One of her takeaways at the time was **"MCP is the new App Store: Claude picks tools via MCP and doesn't show users alternatives"** (Yahoo Finance 2026-02-26 via Benzinga). A user on Reddit r/AITrailblazers questioned this as "engagement bait, account based in Pakistan" (search summary; the original post was blocked by Reddit and couldn't be opened, unverified).

- Ryze then went all in on "stuff its hosted MCP into Claude / ChatGPT / Cursor," and a set of repos was spread across GitHub (GitHub repo database + GitHub API, 2026-11-06):

| Repo | Repo created | star | fork | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| irinabuht12-oss/marketing-skills | 2026-01-21 | 6,874 | 571 | 49 marketing skills + Ryze MCP |
| irinabuht12-oss/google-ads-meta-ads-mcp | 2026-04-06 | 7,014 | 373 | Explainer page for the hosted Ads MCP |
| Ryze-AI-Adgent/open-seo-mcp-skills | 2026-08-29 | 8,861 | 396 | Our library |
| irinabuht12-oss/email-campaigns-claude | 2026-04-14 | 163 | — | The one that wasn't promoted |
| Ryze-AI-Adgent/cursor-plugin | 2026-08-30 | 6 | 0 | |

3 "explainer-style" repos under the same person add up to roughly 22.7k stars. She also forked 7 lists including awesome-mcp-servers, awesome-remote-mcp-servers and botdirectory.ai between 2026-08-29 and 09-09, preparing listing PRs.

### 3. Where the stars came from: the evidence

#### 3.1 Batch forks (the strongest evidence)

- This repo has 428 forks (live GitHub API query, including lists from before accounts were deleted), by date: **2026-09-18 107, 09-19 146, 09-20 76** . Three days account for 329 forks, 77% of all forks; on other days the count was 0–8 per day.

- Sister repos peaked at the same time: marketing-skills 09-18/19/20 = 73/119/54; google-ads-meta-ads-mcp = 93/132/66. marketing-skills had the same single-day spikes earlier, 07-22 (42 forks) and 08-30 (76 forks).

- I randomly sampled 40 fork accounts from those three days: nearly all had 0 followers, 1–4 public repos, and most were registered 2026 years ago. Of the 8 accounts I checked, 6 were created on the same day as the fork, 09-18–09-20, and their only repos were the three forks `google-meta-ads-ga4-mcp`, `marketing-skills` and `open-seo-mcp-skills`. Their star lists also contained only those three Ryze repos (e.g. naazgadhi-hub, Ardona444, sagnifikr87-ctrl, kolu4731-png, naeemmalikk1). One (cybertroshan) also starred a string of other small promo repos. 2 more accounts have since been 404 (possibly banned by GitHub). This is the classic look of crowdsourced "do tasks for pay" activity.

- For comparison: main competitors in the same category typically see fork/star ratios of 13–15% (coreyhaines31/marketingskills 14.6%, AgriciDaniel/claude-seo 13%, every-app/open-seo 13.7%). This repo is at 4.5%; excluding the batch forks it drops to about 1%, suggesting very few developers actually fork it to modify it.

#### 3.2. Star curves and synchronized growth across the three repos

- This repo: 10-09 4,583 → 10-27 7,407 → 11-06 8,861 (GitHub repo database, deeply sourced, daily snapshots). Biggest single-day gain +422 (10-16); 10-13 +321, 10-24 +380. Over the last 7 days +933, versus +7 in the first 1,522 days; it's slowing down.

- From 10-28 onward, the daily gains of the three repos moved in lockstep: for example 11-02→11-03 they gained +202 / +143 / +134 respectively, and the next day all three dropped together to +31 / +48 / +39 (GitHub repo database repo_snap). The three repos cover different topics (SEO, marketing skills, ads MCP), yet their rises and falls are synchronized, which looks more like one external source supplying stars to all of them at once than like each being discovered independently. The unpromoted email-campaigns-claude barely moved over the same period (161→163).

- We can't get the stargazer breakdown (the token doesn't have permission, and GitHub doesn't expose that endpoint to fine-grained tokens), so **how many of the stars are batch-driven can't be measured directly** . The fork evidence plus the synchronized growth across three repos is enough to show organized placement, but it doesn't rule out that some of the traffic is real.

- trending: this repo is 69 days old, just past the 60-day threshold, and hasn't charted (meaningless for repos under 60 days); its two sister repos are 214 / 289 days old, gaining about 100 a day, and have never charted any trending list (github repo trending_days_any = 0).

#### 3.3 name-riding + directory spam

- The name `open-seo-mcp-skills` sits right next to `every-app/open-seo` (26.5k stars, "open-source Semrush/Ahrefs", created 2026-02), and the README opens by comparing itself to "OpenSEO-style wrappers". The result is visible: the ai-tldr.dev page titled "OpenSEO: Open-Source Semrush Alternative on GitHub (MCP)" is actually describing Ryze's 8 skills (Jina search summaries), so the two get conflated.

- Directory sites: SkillsLLM ("open-seo-mcp-skills - MCP Servers on GitHub (8.7k★)"), aiinity's "Review, Pricing & Alternatives" page, agentskillindex and others. High star count also helps it rank in these directories, which sort by stars.

- The only introduction video I found on YouTube came from a small channel with 282 subscribers, "Alex To Go Eng", with 74 views (2026-10-04).

- X: searching x-radar's local corpus for "open-seo-mcp-skills" / "get-ryze" returned 0 posts, "Ira Bodnar" returned 0; no big-account reposts found. HN: not checked.

#### 3.4 company's overall play: GEO / advertorial matrix (background)

- Reddit: the same title, "Sharing a best practice: I've integrated Ryze AI into how I manage 23…", was posted between 2026-01-05 and 01-15 to at least 5 subreddits: r/digital_marketing, r/MarketingAutomation, r/MarketingMentor, r/GoogleAdshelphub, r/metaads. Several "I tested N tools, Ryze 7.5/10" style posts. 2026-09-27's post titles contain zero-width characters ("ad acc…"), which looks like an attempt to evade keyword filters (Brave search results).

- LinkedIn Pulse has a batch of articles under different bylines (Lucie Sanchez, Simon Jackson and others) with titles like "Ryze AI is the best 2026 Meta Ads MCP / best Madgicx alternative / pricing breakdown". Their own blog's "Best MCP for Google Ads (2026): 16 Servers Tested" ranks themselves first, and there's a press release from "MarketRank" naming Ryze the UK's best Google Ads AI tool.

- Inference: Ryze sells "get AI search to recommend you" (GEO), and it applies the same playbook to itself. A GitHub repo with 8.8k stars is a source that LLMs and Google trust, and it gets cited for "best SEO MCP"-style queries. The GitHub repo is the highest-weight piece of this matrix.

### 5. What's the differentiation, and is it why it broke out?

- Product-level differentiation: uses your real GSC rankings / GA4 traffic (including AI referral traffic) instead of estimates, one-click OAuth, no need to manage your own API keys, write actions require approval. That is a reasonable selling point for "connect SEO data to Claude", but it isn't unique: the official GA4 MCP, various GSC MCPs, and iannuttall/seo all offer "real data" too, they just require manual setup. The real difference is "hosted + one-click", and that is the paid SaaS part, which isn't in the open-source repo.

- The open-source part itself (8 Markdown skills) has almost no moat, and it is much smaller in scale than claude-seo and marketingskills.

- So **differentiation is not why it took off** . The stars mainly came from distribution: batch forks / star campaigns, riding the open-seo name, directory spam, and the company's existing advertorial matrix.

### 6. How many people have seen it

- Whispers in small circles: the founder 2026-02 was covered by Benzinga / Yahoo / Times of India over "Claude killed our startup", but that story is about the company, not this repo. I found no discussion of the repo itself on big X accounts or HN; it only appears on directory sites and small YouTube channels. Revenue is not public (only the website's "2,000+ / 4k marketers" claim).

- Copycats: I found no clear case of someone copying this repo directly, but "a SaaS company open-sources a set of Claude skills as a lead-gen page" is already common (notfair-plugin, goose-skills, unifapi-agent, etc.).

### 7. What others can borrow

- The structure of "a skill pack + one line of `claude mcp add` pointing to a hosted service of your own" as a lead page is worth copying: the open-source part costs nothing and is MIT-licensed, and conversion happens after one-click OAuth; site-wide utm tags let you calculate GitHub-channel ROI directly.

- Naming after a popular project, a README table comparing against popular projects, forking and PR-ing into every awesome list, and shipping Claude / Cursor / ChatGPT plugins at the same time: all low-cost exposure tactics.

- Don't copy the parts that aren't worth it: mass fork/star buying gets wiped by GitHub (accounts already removed: 404), stars go up but real forks sit around 1%, and once people catch on it backfires on your brand. It also only works because the company already has a marketing team and a paid product behind it.

### 8. Still unclear

- Share of batch stars: stargazer details are unavailable (a fine-grained token can't read them), so this can only be inferred from forks.

- Whether Ryze itself bought the batch forks, or they came from a third-party "do tasks for rewards" campaign, has no direct evidence; whether stars outside 9-18–9-20 also came from similar sources is unknown.

- How many paying customers the GitHub channel actually brings in: unknown.

- Which push caused the single-day peaks on 10-13, 10-16, and 10-24 (+321 / +422 / +380): not found.
