# Atticus: a Mac voice assistant built by a 9th grader that got 27 stars in 650 days by requiring no API key

**What it is** An open-source Mac voice assistant: hold a hotkey and speak. Simple commands run locally, instantly. Complex tasks go to Claude Code on your machine, using your own Claude subscription, with no API key. Workflows you've done get saved as shortcuts.

**Why it took off** "No key, uses the Claude subscription you already have" hit HN's Claude Code users right on target, and the "built by a 9th grader" story got the first wave. After the plateau, TikTok daily-tool recommender @jackroberts____ (87k views) and a string of "free Mac Jarvis" reposting accounts pushed it again.

**C** **How you could follow it** Don't build another Mac voice agent. Take "use the Claude/Codex CLI the user already pays for as the backend + remember what worked once" to Linux, the browser, the terminal, or a specific audience. Launch Show HN, Reddit, and PH on the same day, and when it plateaus, find TikTok daily-tool accounts to film demos.

Grade C: the playbook and launch order are worth learning, but the "Mac voice agent" slot is already crowded, the original has only 650 stars, its strongest hook (a 14-year-old author) can't be copied, and the whole pitch rests on Anthropic's terms. Chatter in small circles

Atticus is an open-source voice assistant for the macOS menu bar: hold ⌃⌥Space and say a sentence, and it opens apps, arranges windows, and replies to email for you. Bigger jobs get handed off to Claude Code on your computer, running on the Claude Pro / Max subscription you already pay for. The repo was created in Oct 10, and by Nov 6 it had 650 stars and 63 forks (GitHub, 11-06). Below: what it is, where the stars came from, who it's competing with, and what you can copy from it if you want a project that picks up stars too.

### "Hi HN! I'm Saarth. I'm in 9th grade"

On Oct 2026 12, UTC 00:15, a student named Saarth Ranka posted on Hacker News: "Show HN: Atticus – Hold-to-talk voice assistant for macOS that runs on Claude -p". The first line of the post reads "Hi HN! I'm Saarth. I'm in 9th grade, and I built Atticus." His personal site says "Saarth Ranka, 14".

The post finished with 117 points and 30 comments (HN, 11-06). A few things in the comments are worth noting:

- Someone said "This is what Siri/Apple AI should be like";

- Someone called it "the free version of YC's HeyClicky", then added: "This comment was posted by Atticus using my account";

- A person named FindlayH burned some credits that same day to build a Windows fork. The author replied they'd link it in the README, and they did;

- Someone asked whether it could work with DeepSeek, and the author added a "Custom server" option right in the reply;

- Someone bluntly asked: Claude's terms don't allow sign-ups under 18, so how are you using it?

### What it actually does

According to the author on HN, Atticus splits commands into two kinds:

- **Simple ones skip AI** : opening apps, playing a Spotify playlist, searching the web. These run locally, and opening an app takes about 0.08 seconds. "Sometimes it's done before you've finished speaking."

- **Complex ones go to `claude -p`** : that's Claude Code's headless mode. So no API key is needed; it runs on your existing subscription, and the author says the average cost per task is "under a cent."

- **Remember what worked** : the first time a multi-step workflow succeeds, it's saved as a shortcut and replayed next time without calling AI. His example is scheduling a meeting: the first run takes 30 seconds, later runs take 5 to 8 seconds. The most-discussed point on HN was this: if the UI changes, do the shortcuts break? The author's answer is that when one fails, it hands the task back to Claude to rebuild.

- **It asks before deleting, sending, buying, or writing files** ; speech-to-text uses the local model built into macOS 26.

Native Swift, MIT-licensed, free, with one revenue channel: a Ko-fi tip link. Three weeks produced 15 releases (v1.0 on 10-13, now v1.5.6). Later it added local models such as Ollama / LM Studio and other agents like Devin as backends.

One background detail is easy to miss: in 2026 April, Anthropic shut down the route where third-party tools logged in with a subscription and called models directly (the OpenClaw and OpenCode group). Atticus doesn't touch login. It just calls the official `claude` CLI on your machine, which is why "runs on your subscription" still holds up in October. That's its pitch and also its biggest risk, which I'll come back to.

### Where the stars came from

| Date | Cumulative stars | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| 10-12 | — | Show HN; at the same time it was posted to several Reddit communities including r/claudeskills, r/coolgithubprojects, and r/buildinpublic. The Instagram tech account @_justshipped posted "This new Mac voice assistant was built by a 9th grader". |
| 10-14 | — | +100 in a single day, the biggest of the whole run |
| 10-15 | — | Product Hunt: 76 points that day, ranked #25 on the daily chart. Listed on AlternativeTo and opentools.ai. |
| 10-16 | 168 | The launch wave ended. |
| 10-24 | 224 | Plateau: gaining only 3 to 16 per day. |
| 10-25 | 297 | Single day +73 |
| 10-27 | 394 | Another +58. |
| 11-04 | 609 | 11-02 to 11-04 a small wave (+34, +36, +52), overlapping in time with a long feature from the Italian tech site IAMag, 11-03. |
| 11-06 | 650 | About +20 per day |

(GitHub star counts, daily, as of 11-06; before 10-16 only single-day maximums were available, not daily series.)

**Wave one: HN + Reddit + PH, all done in the same week.** The title "runs on Claude -p" was the most precise line for the HN crowd already paying for Claude subscriptions, and the first sentence of the body was the author's age.

**Wave two: a TikTok account pulled it off the plateau.** In Oct 23, @jackroberts____ on TikTok (about 90k followers) posted a video whose first caption line was the GitHub link, followed by a string of short lines: "Your Mac can do almost anything. You just have to click it all yourself. Atticus fixes that… Teach it a routine once. Two words run it after that. Like a chief of staff on your Mac… It's free and open source. Stop clicking. Start talking." By Nov 6 the video had 87k views, 5,648 likes, and 4,571 saves (TikTok, 11-06). Two days later stars rose by 73 in a single day, and they never fell back to the plateau (inference: the timing lines up, but GitHub doesn't provide source data).

Worth noting what kind of account this is: it posts a GitHub project or AI tool almost every day, in a fixed format: a link, a few short lines, and a demo clip. Other projects it posted in the same period got 20k views in some cases and 640k in others. In other words, it's a "daily recommendation" account that specializes in finding open-source tools that film well. Nothing suggests the author sought it out (inference).

**Afterward: reposting accounts took over.** From Oct 24 to Nov 3, a series of AI reposting accounts on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube Shorts shared the same thing in English, Spanish, and Korean. Individual posts got a few hundred to two thousand views, and nearly all the titles were "free Mac Jarvis". Each was small, but together they kept stars rising every day.

**What didn't happen:** No major X account was found writing about it, no paid promotion, and it didn't appear on the GitHub trending page.

### Who it's competing with

"Hold a key on your Mac and talk, and let an agent do the work" was crowded by 2026 9 and October. Atticus wasn't the only one with these features.

| Product | Launched | Scale | How Atticus differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| HeyClicky / clicky(YC) | 2026-04 | Open-source version 7,946 stars | An AI companion beside the cursor that can see the screen and point at things; self-hosted backend, requires an account, has paid tiers |
| Built-in voice in Claude Desktop | From ¥2025-10 | All Claude users | Can only converse, dictate, and take screenshots; can't operate windows or apps |
| Siri / Apple Intelligence | — | All Macs | Can't handle open-ended multi-step tasks |
| Sayonic | PH 2026-10-02,71 points | Small | Almost the same positioning, but closed-source and paid |
| Speek | PH 2026-09-30,70 points | Small | Leans toward dictation |
| LocalClicky | PH 2026-06-05,120 points | PH daily #9 | Fully local models, weaker capability |
| Murmur, Memoe, ARVIS, VoiceOS, OpenNotch | 2026-08 to 10 | PH single-digit score; Memoe's Show HN 2 points | Features are about the same, and none of them took off |
| Hex, FluidVoice, VoiceInk, Wispr Flow | 2024 to 2026 | Hex 5.2k stars, FluidVoice 12.8k stars | Pure dictation; Atticus treats dictation as a side feature |

Following behind it is only that Windows fork (FindlayHi/atticus-windows, 22 stars).

So many similar tools. Why this one? Sayonic, Speek, and Memoe have similar features but none of them say "no key, uses the subscription you already pay for," and none has a 14-year-old author. The first wave came from the former, the second from a recommendation account that makes short videos and the phrase "free Jarvis."

### Its weak spots

- **Stars are not the same as people using it.** It installs with a one-line curl script. The download count on the release installers is 0, and the real install base can't be known.

- **Its survival depends on someone else's terms.** The whole premise is "a third-party app calls the official `claude` CLI and spends the user's subscription quota." Anthropic already shut down a similar subscription-borrowing route in April. If they restrict headless usage or tighten quotas someday, this selling point is gone. The HN questions about minors using Claude accounts are the same kind of risk.

- **When the big players move in, the niche gets squeezed.** If Claude Desktop or Apple can one day operate windows and apps directly, "a free Mac Jarvis" stops being new.

- **Mac only, and it requires macOS 26.** People on HN are already asking for a Linux version, and the Windows version was forked by someone else.

### If it were you

**Bottom line:** Building another "Mac voice agent" will most likely stall at a few dozen stars. This slot is already crowded, and Atticus itself has only 650 stars. What's worth copying is three things: using the AI CLI the user already pays for as the backend, replay that remembers a flow after one successful run, and its cold-start sequence.

**Who it suits:** Developers who already use Claude Code or Codex CLI every day and can produce a 30-second demo that makes the idea obvious within a week or two. A memorable identity story helps (a student, someone from a specific industry), but that part can't be copied.

**Who it doesn't suit:** People hoping to collect stars by cloning Atticus; tools that can't make a good demo video (purely background or pure CLI); anyone hoping to earn money from it. This kind has no revenue, and the author only linked Ko-fi.

**How to do it:**

1. Go to platforms it doesn't cover: a Linux version (people on HN are explicitly looking for one) or a properly built Windows version. Check GitHub first, since the Windows fork already exists.

2. Reuse the pattern in a new setting: "no key, use your Claude / Codex subscription" applied to the browser, terminal, Raycast, or phone shortcuts, or to a specific audience (people who take meeting notes, people who run home servers. The author of that Windows fork uses it to voice-control his home server).

3. Copy its structure: handle simple commands locally, send only complex ones to AI, and save a flow as a shortcut once it works. Put plainly: "gets faster and cheaper the more you use it." That's the point HN responded to most.

4. Ask the user before sensitive actions and state it clearly on the homepage. That's the first gate people check before they dare to install.

**How to get stars:** Post a Show HN the same day, plus two or three relevant subreddits (r/ClaudeAI, r/coolgithubprojects types), and aim for Product Hunt within three days. Title it plainly, e.g. "runs on your Claude plan, no API key," and say who you are in the first sentence. When people request features in HN comments, add them that day and reply that day. After the launch push there's a plateau. That's when you look for TikTok / Instagram accounts that post "one GitHub tool a day" and give them a demo they can cut directly (three windows arranged with one sentence, an email reply in one sentence), framed with a punchy analogy ("free Jarvis").

**Timing:** How long the "subscription as backend" route lasts depends on Anthropic's and OpenAI's terms. If you're going to build it, do it within the next month or two. Once Claude Desktop or the built-in macOS assistant can operate apps, this slot closes.

**Signs you've misread it:** Anthropic restricts third-party calls to `claude -p` or clearly tightens subscription quotas. Or your Show HN gets fewer than 30 points, or fewer than 100 stars in the first week. That means nobody sees this slot as new anymore, so switch to a different setting instead of posting it again.

## Atticus (SaarthurR/atticus-mac): a voice assistant built by a 9th grader that runs the whole Mac on a Claude subscription.

### One line

macOS menu bar voice assistant. Hold ⌃⌥Space to talk. Simple commands (open apps, arrange windows, play Spotify, search the web) run locally without AI. Complex tasks go to the local `claude -p` (Claude Code headless mode), using your existing Claude Pro/Max subscription with no API key. Multi-step flows that succeed once are saved as "shortcuts" and replayed next time without calling AI. MIT-licensed open source. Revenue is only Ko-fi tips.

### Data (GitHub, as of 2026-11-06)

- Tracked for 2026-10-10,27 days: 650 stars, 63 forks (fork-to-star ratio about 9.7%). GitHub API checked live today: 659 stars, 66 forks. Last 7 days +197; the first 7 days +232. (data card / github repo_day)

- The author has only this one repo and 11 followers. Nearly all of the 158 commits are from him. There are 15 releases (v1.0 on 10-13, now v1.5.6), so iteration is fast. (GitHub API)

- The star curve falls into three phases (repo_day):

| Hex, FluidVoice, VoiceInk, Wispr Flow, Superwhisper | Dictation tools | 2024 ~ 2026 | Hex 5.2k stars, FluidVoice 12.8k stars | They only turn speech into text; Atticus treats dictation as a side feature (hold fn) |
| Najva | Free Mac voice assistant | PH 2024-11 (147 points) | — | Previous-generation BYOK voice assistant |

Takeaway: "voice agents on Mac" were packed 2026 year 9 and October, many launched on PH, most with single-digit scores. Atticus isn't the only one in terms of features.

### Why it could take off

1. **"No API key, runs on your Claude Pro/Max"** : this is the first line of the description, and the HN title also says "runs on Claude -p". Claude Code users are already paying for a subscription, and a free, open-source Mac assistant that uses their existing quota is a no-brainer for them; most rivals require BYOK or a separate subscription. This is the sharpest hook for the HN / r/ClaudeAI crowd.

2. **Fast, and has a good "learning" story** : simple commands take about 0.08 seconds and don't call AI at all; a workflow you've done once is saved as a shortcut and skips AI next time (creating a meeting dropped from 30 seconds to 5 ~ 8 seconds). The most discussed thing on HN was "record-once, replay without AI".

3. **The creator story** : "9th grade / 14 years old" opens the Show HN post and was picked up by Instagram and TikTok repost accounts as the hook (@_justshipped and others). The author's site saarthranka.com also says "Saarth Ranka, 14".

4. **Big TikTok accounts drove the second wave** : a video from @jackroberts____ (10-23k) got 87k views and 5.6k likes, reviving it after the repo plateaued; a string of AI repost accounts followed (in English, Spanish, and Korean), keeping growth going.

5. **Fast iteration, fast responses** : 15 versions in three weeks; when people on HN asked for DeepSeek / local models, a "Custom server" option was added (Ollama / LM Studio / llama.cpp / vLLM), later followed by Devin and Pi support; a Windows fork was written into the README. All of this is visible in the README and HN replies.

6. **Easy to demo** : "one sentence arranges three windows across two screens", "draws on screen to explain the Pythagorean theorem", "points at the screen and asks where something is". These fit short video well, so repost accounts were happy to cut them.

### Differentiation, and was it the reason it worked?

- The real differences are three: (a) it uses `claude -p` to borrow the user's existing subscription as the backend, so users pay nothing extra and the author doesn't need servers; (b) deterministic local commands plus replay of learned shortcuts, so it's fast and barely uses up quota; (c) free, MIT-licensed, native Swift.

- Is that the reason? **(a) is the main factor that opened the door in the HN / Claude community** . Similar products like Sayonic, Speek, and Memoe have much the same features but lack this line. (b) is a technical point people discussed and respected. But the second wave's volume came mainly from **TikTok creators + the "free Jarvis on Mac" framing** , driven by distribution and story rather than the difference itself.

- Risks: using a subscription's quota as the backend for a third-party app could be blocked by Anthropic's terms or rate limits; some on HN also questioned whether Claude account terms allow minors to use it. If Claude Desktop itself moves toward "operating your computer", its position gets squeezed.

### How many people have seen it

- Word of mouth in small circles: HN 117 points, PH 76 points, dozens of TikTok / IG repost videos (the biggest at 87k views), and one long article from an Italian tech blog; no big X account posting about it was found (x-radar has 0 mentions, which doesn't cover the whole web). No revenue, only Ko-fi tips.

- Copycats: FindlayHi/atticus-windows (an upstream fork, 22 stars, with the official README linking to it); plenty of similar products in the same period (Murmur launched on PH the same day, Memoe posted a Show HN 10-20), but no sign any of them copied it.

### What to borrow

- "Use the AI subscriptions users already pay for (Claude Code / Codex CLI) as a free backend": free for users, zero inference cost for the author, and the trick can be carried over to other settings (browsers, Windows, Linux, phone shortcuts). People on HN are already asking for a Linux version.

- Local deterministic routing + "do it once and it remembers" replay, which can be pitched as "gets faster and cheaper the more you use it".

- Cold-start playbook: same-day Show HN + several Reddit subs + PH; when growth plateaued, TikTok creators pushed it again, with the title leading on the identity story (a student built it) plus "free Jarvis".

### Unknowns

- The causal link between the 10-25 star jump and the jackroberts video is inferred from timing; there's no GitHub referrer data. Unclear whether jackroberts posted it spontaneously or the author reached out.

- Reddit post scores weren't captured (blocked).

- Stars ≠ usage; no install count data (installed via a curl script, release asset downloads total 0).

- 10-14 single-day +100 is only the number from the data card; there's no day-by-day curve before 10-16.
