# A 1-minute video that pushed a remote desktop tool to 4500 stars: how YouTube got Sill going

**What it is** A free, open-source Mac utility plus iOS app: it sends any single Mac window to your iPhone or iPad at phone or tablet size, controlled by touch, Pencil, or keyboard. No account, and nothing goes through a server.

**Why it took off** The author's code-rendered 1-minute promo was pushed by YouTube's recommendations to people outside the niche (737k views), and Hacker News picked it up. The product fills a gap Apple has never filled: running Mac apps on an iPad. Competitors either charge or are a pain to set up.

**B** **How you could ride it** Don't build the Mac-to-iPhone version. Switch platforms (Windows to iPad/Android, Android controlling a Mac) or make a version for a specific audience. Follow its launch order: a headline that tells the "Apple won't let you" story, the same batch posted to several Reddit communities, and a carefully made 1-minute video on your own YouTube channel.

Grade B: the approach is clear and nobody has claimed the cross-platform version, and the technical bar is low. But the original niche is already held by a project that updates fast, and whether it scales depends mostly on whether a video gets pushed by YouTube. That step carries a lot of luck. What people in the small circles are saying

Noah Saffer, a software engineer in New York, built his first iOS app: it puts any Mac window on an iPhone or iPad. Free, open source, no account needed. In its first week on the App Store it had only a few dozen GitHub stars. Then a 1-minute promo video he made himself was pushed into strangers' recommendation feeds, and it gained three thousand stars in four days. The product itself isn't new. What's worth learning is the video, and the whole launch sequence behind it.

### A recommendation slot next to a science podcast

On Oct 16, Sill hit the Hacker News front page (275 points, 76 comments; the post was not submitted by the author). The most upvoted comment came from alin23, who makes the Mac utilities Lunar and Clop:

> This is the first time I've discovered an app through a YouTube recommendation. I was watching The Rest Is Science, and a 1-minute video popped up on the right, 230k views, about a macOS app.

Replies followed from people who said they'd found it the same way.

The video was posted on Oct 11, and the channel was created that same day. By Nov 6 it had 737k views, 17k likes, and 999 comments (YouTube, 11-06). The channel has only two videos in total.

### What it is

Sill has two halves. On the Mac, it's a menu bar app of about 7 MB: you select a window and it streams that window using hardware HEVC encoding. On the iPhone or iPad, an app lets you control that window with touch, Apple Pencil, an on-screen trackpad, or a keyboard, and your taps and keystrokes are sent back to the Mac.

What sets it apart from typical remote desktop apps:

- **It sends one window at a time** , and re-lays it out at phone or tablet size instead of shrinking the whole screen into the frame;

- The Mac app's menus (File, Edit, View…) and window thumbnails turn into native controls on the phone;

- It runs over your own home network or a USB cable, or over your own VPN (such as Tailscale). **There's no server in the middle and no account to sign up for** ;

- It has a dedicated layout for Apple's foldable iPhone Duo, announced in September: fully open it's one big screen, half-folded it shows the window on top and a trackpad and keyboard below.

The iOS app went live on Oct 8. It's free, with 52 ratings on the US App Store at an average of 4.94 (App Store, 11-06). The code is under the Apache-2.0 license, with 585 commits in 45 days and 5 releases. The author calls it "the first iOS app I built with Claude Code."

### What's in the video

The video is titled "Sill: any window from your Mac, live on your iPhone and iPad. Free and open source" and runs in five beats: tap any window to switch → adjust text size, tap, scroll, and type → up to 120 fps, and windows hidden behind others on the Mac still update live on the iPad → Wi-Fi, wired, direct, or over your own VPN, paired once → the closing line "No subscription. No servers. Free and open source." The description says "the music was written for this video."

The video wasn't cut together from screen recordings. The author open-sourced a separate repo, ReelRenderer, which uses SwiftUI and Core Graphics to render the scenes directly into H.264 video. In other words, the promo was "written" in code. alin23 on HN put it this way: "Claude is already very good at making demo videos."

Most of the comment section reactions are about "free" and "well made":

- The top comment was "may your pillows be forever cold" (2675 likes), followed by a long string of wishes in the same pattern: "may your ketchup never be runny," "may you always wake up one minute before your alarm." The bit pushed the comment count up to 999.

- "We gotta appreciate the sound design of this promo" (915 likes)

- "OMG it's free and open source? You are awesome!!" (550 likes)

- "This is gonna put apps like Duet 6 feet under" (87 likes; Duet is a paid second-screen app)

- "'Connected through Tailscale' Alright lemme install this right now" (122 likes)

Some people nitpicked: "You can tell even the promo is AI-made, there are floating-point errors in the text rendering." (80 likes)

Whether the video was paid promotion isn't visible from outside. But a 2.3% like rate, plus memes the comment section grew on its own, looks more like organic recommendations driving it (inference).

### How the stars climbed

| Date | What happened | star |
|---|---|---|
| 09-22 | Repo created | — |
| 10-08 | App goes live; the author posts the same batch to r/apple, r/ClaudeCode, r/opensource, and r/iPhoneDuo | — |
| 10-11 | Creates a YouTube channel and posts the promo | — |
| 10-13 | The video started getting recommended | 34 |
| 10-14 | Blessing-style comments flood the thread | 45 |
| 10-15 | Content account AwesomeFOSS posts a video (31k views); first HN submission gets only 3 points | +637 |
| 10-16 | Second HN submission hits the front page; iPhone Duo pre-orders open | +678 |
| 10-17 | Single-day peak | +1163, total 2523 |
| 10-18 | Mostly Mac posts the video "This Stupidly Useful Free Little App…" (30.6k views) | +558 |
| 10-22 | iPhone Duo goes on sale | 3815 |
| 11-02 | v0.6: two-way clipboard sync, Mac audio forwarding, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean input methods | 4366 |
| 11-06 | Still gaining thirty to fifty stars a day | 4555, 275 forks. |

(Daily GitHub star counts; the numbers from 10-13 to 10-16 come from the same daily record.)

The table shows three things. First, the Reddit launch and the long forum posts only got the fire started: stars were near zero before 10-14, and it was the video that actually scaled it. Second, the order was YouTube first, putting it in front of science-podcast viewers and ordinary Mac users, then X and content accounts reposting it, and finally HN sending developers over to GitHub. Third, once the buzz faded, fast updates kept people engaged. External contributors have been opening PRs, including a Simplified Chinese localization, with 59 open issues. The author also posted another video for a new feature, 11-04 0.6 (39k views).

### Why people want to share it

**A need that's been bottled up for years, plus a good headline.** The posts on r/apple and the MacRumors forum open the same way: at WWDC 2018, Apple explicitly said Mac apps wouldn't run on iPad. "Today, that no became a yes."

**Built-in features don't cover this gap.** Sidecar uses the iPad as a second screen for the Mac. It can only be started from the Mac, you can't tap the Mac's interface with your fingers, and it doesn't support the iPhone. iPhone Mirroring goes the other way: it lets you operate an iPhone from a Mac. On HN, one person said they'd spent a long time stitching together Sunshine and Moonlight ("a lot of tinkering, half the time it was broken") and could now throw that away.

**Competitors either charge or are a hassle. This one is free.**

| Peers | How it's done | Compared with Sill |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Sidecar / iPhone Mirroring | Built into the system | Different purpose or use case (see above) |
| Astropad Workbench | Launched 2026-03, 219 ratings on the US App Store | Closest in positioning, but per HN commenters it costs $100/year and is closed source |
| Jump Desktop, Screens 5, Splashtop, Duet | Established paid remote desktop tools | Stream the whole screen, paid, some require accounts and route through servers |
| Sunshine + Moonlight | Open source, popular in the game-streaming crowd | Built for gaming, setup is tricky |
| peetzweg/opendisplay | Open source, 6210 stars | Focused on a second display, not remote control of a single window; no video that broke out |

**Timing with new hardware.** Sill added iPhone Duo support early, and the week Duo pre-orders and launch happened was when its stars climbed fastest. How much that contributed from the outside is impossible to say.

### Who else is doing it

Very little so far. One is rahimnathwani/sill-android, 10-16, which was posted to HN as a Show HN for an Android client and got only 4 points. It fills in a client for Sill rather than competing with it. No one has been seen copying it. Someone on HN said "an LLM can write this in two hours, here's the Windows version," and the technical barrier is indeed not high. The hard part is getting people to notice it.

### If it were you

**One judgment:** The Mac-to-iPhone/iPad position is already held by Sill, which updates quickly, so building an identical one adds nothing. What's worth copying is the launch method: a tool people have long wanted that the system refuses to provide, released free and open source, with a carefully made 1-minute video on YouTube. Few people know this approach yet.

**Who it's for:** Developers of small tools for the Apple, Windows, and Android ecosystems, ideally people who care about visuals and sound themselves or are willing to spend a week or two polishing a video.

**Who it's not for** : people who'll polish the README and wait for stars. Sill posted around Reddit and forums in its first week and got only a few dozen stars. Similar tools like opendisplay do just as well on features, but none has a video that broke out.

**How to do it** :

- **Take it to a platform nobody covers** : push Windows windows to iPad or Android tablets, control a Mac from an Android phone, or go Linux desktop. Each of these has a crowd the system doesn't serve. The HN comment "a Windows version in two hours" shows it can be done, and also that you need to move fast.

- **Fill the gaps Sill leaves** : right now Sill only does Mac to Apple devices. Multi-window streaming at once, multi-device collaboration, or a version built for one kind of user (an illustrator running pro software on a Mac via Pencil, a developer watching a terminal on an iPad) can each be a project of its own.

- **The playbook works on other tools too** : find something Apple, Microsoft or Google said they wouldn't build, make it free and open source, and let the title tell that history.

- **Structure the video like Sill's** : 1 minutes, five sections, one point per section, and end with "free, no server". Score the music and sound effects on purpose. Rendering from code (see ReelRenderer) beats screen recording: it's cleaner, and each version is easy to update.

**How to get users** : on launch day, post the same thing across r/apple, r/opensource, the hardware subreddits and the AI-coding subreddits. Lead with the story, not a feature list. A few days later, publish the video on your own YouTube channel and let recommendations build slowly. Post to HN yourself once; if it doesn't take, wait for someone else to submit it (Sill's first submission got 3 points, and the second one made the front page). When new hardware ships, adapt early and post in its subreddit.

**When to act** : the window for copying Sill itself has closed. A cross-platform version is worth doing as early as possible, ideally before the first decent Windows or Android version appears.

**What would prove this wrong** : ① over the next month or two, several "homemade promo video + free and open source" tools appear and none passes a thousand stars, which would mean Sill's breakout was mostly YouTube recommendation luck and can't be copied; ② Apple adds "control a single Mac window from iPad" to the system, and the gap is gone; ③ Sill ships its own Windows or Android version, and the cross-platform route is taken.

- Inferred **Paid promotion** : no evidence found; whether the YouTube video was promoted can't be seen.

## Saffsanity/sill: why it took off

> Research date 2026-11-06. Data sources: our GitHub database (repo_day, with daily data from 10-13), the GitHub page, the YouTube Data API, HN Algolia, iTunes lookup, and web pages (sources listed below).

### One line

Sill is a free, open-source (Apache-2.0) tool for streaming any single Mac window to an iPhone or iPad, with reverse control (touch, Apple Pencil, trackpad, keyboard). It has no account and goes through no server. The author, Noah Saffer (a software engineer in New York with 94 GitHub followers), built it alone and calls it "my first iOS app, built with Claude Code". It took off **mainly because a 1-minute promo video made by the author was recommended heavily on YouTube (737k views, 17k likes, 999 comments)** . The HN front page (275 points) then carried it further, pushing GitHub stars from 45 to 2500+. The product's hooks are single windows, rearranging for device size, and Mac menus and windows turning into native controls on the phone, plus being completely free and open source, in contrast to paid subscription rivals (Screens, Jump, Astropad Workbench at $100 a year).

### Data

- GitHub: repo created 2026-09-22; by 10-13 it had only 34 stars; 10-14 45; **10-15 +637, 10-16 +678, 10-17 +1163 (single-day peak), 10-18 +558** , then it fell back day by day and has held at 30–60 a day over the past week; 11-06 total 4555 stars and 275 forks (github repo_day). Fork-to-star ratio is about 6%. 59 open issues and about 70 PRs; outside contributors are submitting PRs such as a Simplified Chinese localization and iPhone arrow-key support (GitHub PR page).

- App Store: id6816359860 "Sill – Mac Streaming", listed 2026-10-08, free, Utilities category, 52 ratings in the US store, 4.94 average (iTunes lookup 11-06). Our appstore library doesn't include it, so there is no chart ranking data.

- Official YouTube channel @getsillapp: created 10-11; the 1-minute promo video fJnNkfHLdFw was published the same day and has so far gotten **737,344 views, 17,115 likes and 999 comments** . The channel has 4050 subscribers and only 2 videos. The second is "What's new in Sill 0.6" posted by 11-04, with 39,303 views (YouTube Data API 11-06).

- Revenue: none. The product is completely free; only GitHub Sponsors is enabled (someone on HN said they've already donated).

| 11-02 | v0.6.0; 11-04 the author posts a 0.6 new-feature video themselves (39k views). |

### 1. Why it took off

**Where it came from** : the key evidence is a highly upvoted comment under the HN post (alin23, author of Lunar/Clop): "This is the first time I discover an app through a Youtube video recommendation. I was watching The Rest Is Science when this 1 minute video appeared on the right side with 230k views about a macOS app". Another user replied that they had found it the same way. In other words, **the YouTube recommendation feed put the promo video in front of science-podcast viewers first** (already 230k views by 10-16, now 737k), and HN then brought the developer crowd over to GitHub. The sequence: YouTube (from 10-13) → X and content accounts (10-15) → HN front page (10-16) → re-sharing and media (10-16–10-18). GitHub stars were nearly zero before 10-14, which suggests the Reddit launch (10-08) and the MacRumors post (10-10) only lit the fuse; the video is what actually scaled it.

**How the trailer was made** : the author also opened a separate repo, Saffsanity/ReelRenderer ("Sill's video renderer: SwiftUI and Core Graphics scenes to H.264, Apple frameworks only"), meaning the trailer was rendered from code. On HN, alin23 said "Claude got really good at making demo videos", and someone asked about the Hyperframes + Claude approach. YouTube comments praise its "sound design" and "Never realised a remote control app can have such a vibe. what a trailer". The trailer's production quality is the core asset behind this spread.

**Bought traffic?** : no evidence. 737k views, 17k likes (about 2.3%), 999 comments. The "blessing" meme flooding the comments looks organic. But we can't see YouTube backend data, so whether Google video ads were run is **unverified** .

**Why people stay** :

- It hit a long-standing itch right away: "Run Mac apps on iPad." Apple said in 2018 it would never do this. The author put the story right in the headline (r/apple thread, MacRumors post).

- Sidecar can only be started from a Mac, and it doesn't do single windows or touch. iPhone Mirroring goes the other way. HN commenter fbcpck: "Sidecar has to be started and controlled from the Mac. I want to start from the handheld and control the Mac". They said Sunshine + Moonlight used to "take forever to set up and were broken half the time", and Sill can replace that now.

- Free, open source, no account, no server, works over Tailscale remotely (YouTube comment: "'Connected through Tailscale' Alright lemme install this right now"). Privacy folks and developers are buying in.

- Fast iteration: 45 commits in 585 days, 5 releases, and v0.6 added clipboard, sound, and CJK input methods. External contributors are opening PRs.

### 2. Competitors

| Competitors | Where | Launched | Scale | What makes Sill different |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Sidecar | System feature | 2019 | All Mac + iPad | Sidecar is "iPad as a second screen", started from the Mac. It doesn't support touching Mac UI and doesn't support iPhone. Sill starts from the phone, works per window, and supports touch. |
| iPhone Mirroring | System feature | 2024 | Built into the OS (not available in the EU) | Opposite direction: operating an iPhone from a Mac |
| Screens 5(Edovia) | iOS / Mac | Long-established | Subscription | Whole-screen VNC; Sill does single-window reflow and is free |
| Jump Desktop | iOS | 2010 | US store: 1716 ratings; #2 in the category chart (appstore library). | Paid, RDP/VNC/Fluid protocols, whole screen |
| Astropad Workbench | iOS / Mac | 2026-03 | 219 ratings on the US store; HN says $100/year | Closest positioning (bringing the Mac to iPad, aimed at AI workflows), but charges a subscription |
| Duet Display / Splashtop / RealVNC / Chrome Remote Desktop | iOS / web | 2010 era | Splashtop, US store: 4094 ratings. | Paid or requires an account, goes through a server, full-screen remote. |
| Sunshine + Moonlight | Open source | Years | A large user base in the game-streaming crowd | Built for gaming, fiddly setup. Sill works out of the box and has native Mac controls. |
| peetzweg/opendisplay | Open source + iOS | 2026-06(App Store 07-02) | 6210 stars; 23 ratings on the App Store | Does "use it as a second display" (an open-source alternative to Sidecar/Duet), not single-window remote control |
| StephenLovino/BetterCast and others | Open source | 2026 | A hundred-odd stars | Also the extended-display route |

Plenty of remote desktop tools, all mature. Sill is new in two ways: first, the interaction model. It's single-window, reflows to phone size (virtual display), turns Mac menus and window thumbnails into native phone controls, and has a layout for the iPhone Duo's folded form. Second, "free + open source + no server".

### Visibility and copycats

- Buzz is spreading in small circles: it's been covered on the HN front page, a few tech outlets, mid-tier YouTube channels, and Japanese and Korean media, but not yet on big sites like The Verge or 9to5Mac. Our X corpus has nothing on it. It's a free product, so there's no revenue to disclose.

- Copycats: rahimnathwani/sill-android (an Android client posted as Show HN, 10-16 points, 4 comments). That's a derivative, not a competitor. We haven't seen a straight-up copy as a commercial product. On HN someone said "an LLM could clone a Windows version of this in two hours", so the barrier is low.

### Differentiation, and was it the reason it worked?

Differentiation has three layers: (1) the interaction model: single window, reflow, native controls, so a phone or iPad feels like it's "using" Mac apps, not watching a shrunken remote screen; (2) free and open source, no server, no account; (3) early support for new hardware, the iPhone Duo. These make the product "worth sharing", but **the direct reason it took off is distribution** : a very high-quality trailer amplified by YouTube recommendations. Open-source peers like opendisplay have decent star counts, but none had the same video-driven breakout. "Free" also fuels the comment-section mood (the blessing meme flood).

### Takeaways

1. A tool-focused open-source project rendered a 1-minute trailer from code with polished sound, posted it on its own YouTube channel, and got recommended outside its niche. That beats README GIFs by a wide margin. The author also open-sourced the renderer separately (ReelRenderer).

2. The title leans on a piece of history everyone identifies with: "Apple said no for 2018 years, and today it's yes".

3. Same-day launches on r/apple, r/ClaudeCode, hardware subreddits, and open-source subreddits, then handed off to HN and content accounts to carry it further.

4. Adapted early for upcoming new hardware (iPhone Duo), riding the launch-week searches and buzz.

5. Free + privacy (no account, no server) earns goodwill with the developer crowd on its own, and that's where the comment-section memes came from.

### Uncertain

- Whether the YouTube video was paid promotion: the backend isn't visible.

- Reddit post scores and comment counts: blocked by 403.

- App Store downloads and rankings: not in our database. All we know is 52 ratings on the US store.

- The specific source of the +637 on 10-15: YouTube spillover, X, or Reddit, can't be separated.

- The daily breakdown of star sources: GitHub API rate limits kept us from pulling stargazer timestamps.

- Whether the author will monetize later: it's fully free for now, and the terms say "no payment".
