# A TikTok with 340k views brought in 200 stars: how couch-tv arrived late to the "Claude fixes your TV" wave

**What it is** An open-source project that replaces the Google TV home screen, with a phone remote, and it can hook into your own Claude. Say "play that vampire movie" and it finds, opens, and starts it on its own. Later it added support for Samsung, LG, and Fire TV.

**Why it caught on** In October, "using Claude Code to strip ads from your TV" blew up, and people already recognized the meme. Instead of talking about ad removal, the author filmed a TikTok of "I ask a question and the TV plays it itself", which got 345k views. The next day he used "comment COUCH and I'll DM you the link" to send people to GitHub.

**C** **How you could ride it** Don't build another TV project. Learn the playbook instead: when the next "use AI to reshape something" wave starts, enter within days with a fresh angle that can be filmed, lead with the effect in short video, use comment keywords to hand out the link, and post to HN and Reddit at the same time. Or do the same thing in another language or with a local brand.

Grade C: this TV wave peaked 10-22, 40 repos are already crowded in, and couch-tv, despite a fresh angle and a viral video, only reached 200 stars. The short-video traffic tactic and "enter with a new angle" are worth learning, but building another TV project is not worth it. Circulating in small circles

couch-tv is an open-source Google TV home-screen replacement with a phone remote that can also take one-line requests through Claude. When it was created, the peak of the "use Claude Code to strip ads from your TV" wave had already passed by 4 days, and the lead project had over 50k stars. In 11 days it got 213 stars and 37 forks (GitHub, 11-06), and nearly all the stars came from the author's TikToks with "comment COUCH and I'll DM you the link". The star count is small, but this playbook and the angle it used are worth a look. Below: what it is, where the stars came from, who it's competing with, and whether you should follow it.

### A TV that "does what it's told"

On the evening of Oct 25 2026, an Australian named Joshua Seage posted a TikTok of his living-room TV: it boots to a landscape wallpaper with a big glass-style clock on top, and a row of apps in an order he chose himself, with no ads. The caption reads:

> Faster, no ads, clean and pretty. Every TV at home has its own layout and its own remote app, the remote runs on Claude, and I just ask it for what I want to watch.

As of 11-06 the video has 345k views, 14k likes, and 4,875 saves (TikHub, 11-06). At the time his TikTok had only a few hundred followers, and his day job was AI consulting for businesses. Oct 14 had just posted a "starting over" video saying he'd gotten sick of cutting videos while doing fashion-brand work, and that now he'd show his face again, doing what he teaches clients.

The video has no link, only "a tutorial in a few days." The next day, Oct 26, he created a GitHub repo and posted again:

> I showed you my TV yesterday. Lots of people asked for the code, and a few said this isn't really agentic. Fair, so here's how it actually works: I don't tell it which app to open or which button to press. I just ask "what's the name of that vampire movie with Edward Cullen," and Claude figures out it's Twilight, checks which of my apps has it, asks if I want to watch, then opens that app and starts playing. ... In the video I cut out the wait. In reality Claude takes 10 to 20 seconds to think.

The ending is github.com/Seagey/couch-tv, plus "comment COUCH and I'll DM you the link." The post has 32k views and 388 comments. The same clip went up on Instagram Reels, and the comments are a wall of "COUCH."

### What it is

- An open-source project (MIT) that replaces the Google TV / Android TV home screen: five rotating scene wallpapers, a glass clock, weather, self-arranged apps, and "continue watching."

- A phone web remote, plus a small program that runs on your home computer. For Claude requests, the program calls Claude Code on your computer, using your own Claude subscription, so there's no extra API cost.

- The install method is standard for this wave: give the repo link to your AI agent and say "set this up on my TV." The agent reads the instructions in the repo, asks what TV you have and which option you want, then does the work, with one-click undo.

- Later, following questions in the comments, he added Samsung (10-29, tested on only one 2021 Frame), Fire TV (starting at 10-30), LG (11-01, the README says it's still waiting on its first real device), and Home Assistant cards for air conditioning and doorbells.

The author's GitHub account has only this one repo.

### It arrived after the wave had already peaked

「让 AI 把智能电视变笨」这件事是 10 月 17 日前后在 X 和 Reddit 上爆的。Gathin23/cleanyourtv 给了一段 prompt 加一份去广告清单,几千人照着做,10-22 单日涨了 7,120 星,现在 5.2 万多星;TechCrunch 10-19 发了《People are using AI to make their smart TVs dumb again》,Guardian、CBC、XDA 跟着写。9 月中以后建的、跟电视主屏和去广告有关的新仓库有 40 多个,couch-tv 按星数排在第 39 名左右。

| Project | Repo created | Stars (11-06) | How couch-tv differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gathin23/cleanyourtv | 10-17 | 52,550 | Source; ad-removal prompt + Apple TV-style home screen, no assistant or remote |
| pengchujin/aerial-tv | 10-20 | 9,951 | A tvOS-style desktop for domestic TVs like Xiaomi and TCL |
| simbasjungles/free-my-tv | 10-19 | 5,917 | Supports Google TV, LG, and Samsung from the start, with one-click restore |
| Ansub/tv-detox | 10-18 | 2,192 | Streamlined home screen + cleanup prompt |
| humblemuzzu/dumbtv | 10-18 | 1,956 | Focused on Fire TV, and named by TechCrunch |
| cleanyourtv-app / tellyscope | 10-21, 10-22 | 1,665 / 1,539 | Cleanup directly on your phone, no computer or Claude needed |
| anubhavmalhotra/r2d2-tv | 10-21 | 68 (Show HN 112 points) | Thinking lately: LG home screen + remote + voice assistant |
| Seagey/couch-tv | 10-26 | 213 | Home screen + phone remote + Claude-powered playback, across four TV platforms |

There are also two older rivals: third-party launchers like Projectivy and FLauncher that don't use AI, which TechCrunch recommends to people who don't want to tinker; and Google TV's built-in Gemini voice search, which can already play content natively, except the home screen ads are still there.

So couch-tv didn't pioneer this. What it got right is that it didn't repeat "no more ads." It sold "ask it something and it plays." The first pitch had lost its novelty by Oct 25; the second makes for a 15-second clip people want to watch.

### Where the stars came from: just one entry point

| Date | stars | What happened those days |
|---|---|---|
| 10-25 | The repo isn't built yet | Demo video, 345k views |
| 10-26 | Repo created | "Comment COUCH" video, 32k views |
| 10-28 | 29 | "You asked if it works on Samsung, it does now," 6,561 views |
| 10-30 | 106 | +68 in a single day, cause not verified |
| 11-02 | 185 | |
| 11-06 | 213 | Daily gains dropped to single digits |

Star counts come from GitHub's daily data; view counts come from TikHub, pulled on 11-06.

The only traffic source we could find was the creator's own short videos. Nobody on X mentions it, there are no Hacker News threads, and the outlets covering the wave never wrote about it. HotRepo 11-01 listed it with the note "steady small-library growth, not a spike." 10-30 We couldn't confirm where the +68 that day came from. It could be residual lift from the Samsung video two days earlier, or the Instagram reel (view counts unavailable).

Conversion is very low: 30 million views produced only 200 stars. The reason is easy to see. Most people who see the video are ordinary viewers, not GitHub users, and the link only comes after commenting and then a DM, which is one more gate. But people who would actually install it don't go for the star. They fork: forks are 18% of stars, against a median of about 11% for new repos in the same period.

### The three things it got right

**Give the result first, the link the next day.** The first video only demonstrates, with no link, so curiosity builds overnight. The second answers the comment challenge "that's not agentic" and swaps the link for a comment keyword. The keyword itself drives more engagement on the video.

**Sequels based on comments.** "Does it work with Samsung?" → 10-28 made a Samsung version; then the Frame's art mode, Guest TV for Airbnb hosts (10-30), and a face-recognizing doorbell (11-04, "comment DOORBELL"). Each one pulls traffic with the same keywords. The sequels only get a few thousand views each. Only the first video went viral.

**Turn the people who fork into co-authors.** The top of the README has an Updates section that logs each change by date and who contributed it. The 10-30 entry credits 6 fork authors (Android 9 crash, continue watching, Fire TV, doorbell), and the 11-04 entry opens with "34 people have already forked couch-tv." That gives people who like tinkering a reason to merge their changes back into the main repo.

### If it were you

**C: Learn the playbook, don't build another TV project.** The "Claude remake a TV" wave peaked at 10-22 after blowing up from 10-17. By then 40 repos had already covered ad removal, home screens, every major TV brand, and a mobile app version. couch-tv came in with a fresh angle and a 340K-view video, yet only picked up 200 stars. This window is basically closed.

**Who it's for** : developers who have an open-source gadget they can demo on camera (something at home, on the desk, in the car, or in the kitchen) and are willing to show their face in short videos; or people who already have some following on TikTok, Instagram, Xiaohongshu, or Douyin and want to build a reputation through an open-source project.

**Who it's not for** : people hoping to get several thousand stars from a TV home-screen project; people who won't make videos and plan to wait for GitHub and X to discover them. Projects like this have stopped being news in developer channels.

**How to do it** : the next time a "use AI to transform X" wave takes off, don't build what the originators already built. Find a new angle that can become a picture (here it went from "no ads" to "does what you say"). Build the repo to this wave's standard: install instructions for agents to read, a read-only check first, ask before acting, one-click undo. Put Updates at the top of the README and credit every fork that gets merged. You can also change the audience. couch-tv and nearly all projects in this wave are English-only. Only aerial-tv made a domestic Chinese TV version, and it reached nearly 10k stars. Doing the same thing in another language or for local brands pays off far more than being the 41th in the English market.

**How to get users** : copy its two-step approach. The first post shows only the result. The second answers comments and swaps in the link via keyword. Each of the most common questions in the comments gets its own sequel. Mind conversion: short-video viewers rarely hit star, so say it directly in DMs and videos ("star it and I'll keep updating"), or put the link in your profile to cut one gate. Also post to Hacker News and Reddit at the same time. Developer channels are where stars really come from, and couch-tv skipped exactly that step.

**When to move before the wave** : don't chase this wave, chase the next one. These surges run from takeoff to peak in about a week. Entering with a new angle within 3–5 days of the source is the best value. couch-tv arrived 9 days late and could only get the leftovers.

**What would show we're wrong** : ① couch-tv or some "agentic TV" project passes 2,000 stars before year end. That would mean "a TV that listens" has more to it than riding the hype. ② A Chinese-language or other non-English TV assistant project passes 5,000 stars within a month. That would mean the gap in other languages is bigger than it looks, and this deserves a B grade. ③ The author's later keyword-funnel videos keep bringing in dozens of stars each. That would mean short-video conversion for open-source projects is better than what we saw here.

## Seagey/couch-tv: why it took off

> Data as of 2026-11-06. At research time, live GitHub data showed 217 stars / 39 forks (GitHub API); the data card showed 213 / 37.

### Bottom line

couch-tv is a latecomer to the "make your smart TV clean with Claude Code" wave that started in mid-October 2026 (repo created 10-26, 9 days after the leader, cleanyourtv). Its stars didn't mainly come from GitHub, HN, or X, the developer channels. They came from the author, Joshua Seage, posting short videos on TikTok and Instagram: a 345k-view "my agentic TV" demo, plus a "comment COUCH and I'll DM you the link" funnel. Its biggest difference from similar projects is that it turns the TV into an agent you can control in natural language ("play that show about a lawyer who never went to law school" and it finds Suits and plays it), plus a phone remote, and it merges other people's fork changes back into the main repo. Across the whole wave, though, it's a small mid-to-lower repo, ranked around #40.

### 1. What it is

- A replacement home screen for Google TV / Android TV (scene wallpaper + glass clock + weather + auto-arranged apps + "continue watching"), plus a phone web remote and a Python bridge that runs on a home computer. The Claude assistant is optional: the bridge calls the local `claude -p`, using the user's own Claude subscription rather than API-key billing. Later it added support for Samsung (Tizen), LG (webOS), and Fire TV, along with a Home Assistant doorbell and AC card. Source: [README](https://github.com/Seagey/couch-tv)

- Installation is "hand this repo to your AI agent and say set this up on my TV": the agent reads AGENTS.md, first asks what TV it is and which option to use, and only then acts.

- MIT open source, free. The author's GitHub account has only this one repo.

### 2. Growth data

- Our GitHub repo data (repo_day): 10-28 29★ → 10-29 38 → **10-30 106 (single day +68)** → 10-31 124 → 11-01 141 → 11-02 185 → 11-03 198 → 11-06 213. Over the last 7 days +107, after which daily gains fell to single digits.

- The fork ratio is high: 39 forks / 217★ ≈ 18% (median for comparable new repos is about 11%). Forks started appearing the night the repo was created 10-26 (GitHub forks API).

- HotRepo 11-01 added it to its Python new-projects chart, with the note "steady small-repo growth rather than a breakout". Source: [hotrepo.ai](https://hotrepo.ai/Seagey/couch-tv)

- Never appeared on GitHub trending (the repo was under 60 days old, so not making the chart says nothing either way).

### 3. Competitors: dozens in the same wave

Around 2026-10-17, "use Claude Code over ADB to remove TV ads and replace the home screen" blew up on X and Reddit. TechCrunch published ["People are using AI to make their smart TVs dumb again"](https://techcrunch.com/2026/10/19/people-are-using-ai-to-make-their-smart-tvs-dumb-again/) on 10-19; the Guardian, CBC, and XDA covered it too; a r/singularity post, "34,800 stars in 8 days," got 13k upvotes. In our GitHub data, after 2026-09-15 there were more than 40 repos created on TV launchers or debloat, and couch-tv ranked around #39 by stars:

| Project | Platform | Repo created | Scale (github repos, 11-06) | How couch-tv differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gathin23/cleanyourtv | Open source | 10-17 | 52,550★ / 6,705 forks, 10-22 single day +7,120 | The wave's source: a prompt + ad-removal list + Apple TV-style home screen, which thousands of people copied after the author posted it. It handles only cleanup and the home screen, with no assistant or remote. |
| pengchujin/aerial-tv | Open source | 10-20 | 9,951★ | An Apple tvOS-style desktop for domestic Chinese TVs (Xiaomi, TCL), aimed at the Chinese-speaking market. |
| simbasjungles/free-my-tv | Open source | 10-19 | 5,917★ | Home screen covers Google TV, LG, and Samsung from the start, with one-click restore. |
| Ansub/tv-detox | Open source | 10-18 | 2,192★ | Declutter home screen + prompt cleanup, works with Claude Code / Codex |
| humblemuzzu/dumbtv | Open source | 10-18 | 1,956★ | Fire TV only, name-checked by TechCrunch |
| udhaykumarbala/cleanyourtv-app, man15h/tellyscope | Open source / mobile app | 10-21 / 10-22 | 1,665★ / 1,539★ | Clean up from your phone, no computer or Claude needed |
| mihirgupta0900/tv-home | Open source | 10-18 | 735★ | One-prompt cleanup + Apple TV-style home screen (the author's post was cited by TechCrunch) |
| anubhavmalhotra/r2d2-tv | Open source | 10-21 | 68★ (Show HN 112 points) | Closest idea: webOS home screen + remote + push-to-talk voice assistant |
| vishalsingh2972/Claude-TV | Open source | 10-18 | 80★ | Has Claude in the name, but still a clean home screen |
| Projectivy / ATV Launcher / FLauncher | Android store app | Already existed | Mature third-party launcher | A non-AI old-school approach; TechCrunch recommends it to people who don't want to tinker |
| Google TV's built-in Gemini voice search | Big-company features | Already there | Preinstalled | Official voice playback, but home-screen ads remain |

**Bottom line** : couch-tv didn't pioneer the category. When it entered, the peak of the wave (10-22) was already 4 days past.

### 4. Growth tactic: the author's own short videos plus comment-keyword lead capture (evidence found)

The author, Joshua Seage, has only 629 followers on TikTok (TikHub, 11-06). He previously ran the apparel brand Lennox Label, 10-14 posted videos saying he was 'starting over,' and his main business is now AI consulting for companies (profile link underseage.studio). From the config's default country AU, support for Australian streamers like Stan and Binge, and the golf videos on his page, he is likely in Australia (inferred).

Per-video data for TikTok @joshuaseage (TikHub, 2026-11-06 scrape):

| Date | Views | Likes | Reviews | Saves | Item |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10-25 | **344,791** | 14,053 | 173 | 4,875 | Demoed his own TV: 'faster, no ads, looks good, every TV gets its own layout,' said the next video would include the git link |
| 10-26 | 31,805 | 858 | **388** | 699 | 'Yesterday I showed you my TV, and lots of you asked for code...' **Comment COUCH and I'll send you the link** , and the caption also includes github.com/Seagey/couch-tv |
| 10-28 | 6,560 | 142 | 109 | 100 | 'You asked whether it works on Samsung, now it does' |
| 10-29 | 6,097 | 145 | 7 | 148 | Guest TV for rentals / guest rooms |
| 10-30 | 1,342 | 23 | 0 | 8 | Had Claude make a promo video for this git repo |
| 11-03 / 11-04 | 1,503 / 770 | — | — | — | 'Comment DOORBELL', 'Comment GUEST', same lead-capture playbook |

The same account on Instagram posted the same 'Comment COUCH' reel ([link](https://www.instagram.com/reel/De-a95Ezuj8/)), and the comments fill up with 'COUCH'.

- The playbook: first post a demo video that shows the effect but gives no link, to build curiosity; the next day post a follow-up responding to viewers' questions ('Many say this isn't agentic, so let me explain'), trading comment keywords for the link in DMs. Comment keywords also boost engagement. Then new videos are made one by one from the questions in the comments: Samsung version, Art Mode, Guest TV, doorbell.

- Conversion was very low: 345k + 32k plays yielded only about 200 stars. Most viewers are general audiences, not GitHub users; the link is only available via DM, adding another barrier.

- **The source of the single-day +68 on 10-30 was not verified** . The GitHub stargazers API returns 404 for this repo, so per-star timestamps are unavailable. Possible causes: residual effect of the 10-28 and 10-29 videos, Instagram reel views (no numbers available), and the 10-29 README mentioning Samsung support.

- Other channels were nearly absent: our x database has 0 posts mentioning couch-tv / Seagey; hackernews database has 0; TechCrunch and other media did not mention it.

### 5. Why it worked (at its scale)

1. **Rode a platform event** : 'Using Claude Code to modify a TV' went viral from 10-17 to 10-22, driven by cleanyourtv and TechCrunch. By 10-25 general viewers already recognized the meme, and his demo video caught that wave.

2. **Personal short videos plus keyword lead capture** : a TikTok with 345k views plus 'Comment COUCH' was the only clear traffic entry point found; most competitors at the time relied on X and Reddit.

3. **Changed the selling point: not 'no ads' but 'agentic TV'** : the demo focused on natural-language playback ('that Edward Cullen vampire movie' → finds Twilight, checks which app has it, plays it), a phone remote, and per-TV layouts. Most similar projects only did cleanup and home screens.

4. **Iterated on comment requests and let forks contribute** : Samsung (10-29), Fire TV (from 10-30), and LG (11-01) were all added in response to comment requests. The README's Updates section thanks 6+ fork authors by name and merges their changes back (Android 9 crash fix, Watch Next, Home Assistant doorbell, Fire TV), which pushed the fork ratio up to 18%.

5. **Agent-friendly install method** : AGENTS.md says 'ask for the TV model and plan before acting,' and check-tv.py does a read-only check first, reducing the fear that non-technical users will break their TV. This is now standard in the wave (cleanyourtv, dumbtv, and CleanFrame all do it), not unique to this project.

### 6. Differentiation, and whether that's why it took off

- Differentiation: **Claude-assisted playback + phone remote + multiple TVs / family members + Home Assistant** . It pushes 'clean up the TV' a step further into 'the agent TV at home'; another repo manages Google TV, Samsung, LG, and Fire TV together.

- Is that the reason? **Partly** . Short videos drew viewers because of the 'I ask a question and it plays by itself' visual, which is fresher than 'the ads are gone'. The first video's 345k views and 4,875 saves support this. But star counts are only 200, against a category with 50k+ stars overall: the wave itself drove most of the traffic, plus the author's short-video distribution. The differentiator just gave it something filmable amid a sea of 'remove ads from home screen' projects.

### 7. How many people know about it

- Small circle: the author has 629 TikTok followers, one viral video; media, major X accounts, and HN never wrote about it; HotRepo's assessment: 'steady growth for a small repo, not a breakout.'

- No revenue data and no monetization. The author's monetization likely sits on the AI consulting side (underseage.studio, inferred).

- Copycats: there are 39 forks, several renamed, such as herocode1/couch-tv-hero, jordadew/frontrow (copied the description verbatim, 0★), fmnlk-couch-tv, and couch-tv-amzt, none of which gained traction. No standalone 'agentic TV assistant' copycat with traction was found.

### 8. What others can learn

- Short-video lead capture for an open-source project: the first video shows the effect with no link; the second responds to comments and trades a keyword for a DM link; follow-ups are made one by one from comment requests (another TV brand, another scenario).

- In a wave that has already exploded, find a new angle that can be filmed, and don't repeat what the originators already did. Here the angle is moving from 'remove ads' to 'a TV that obeys.'

- Include an Updates section in the README that names merged forks, turning tinkerers into co-maintainers.

- 'Hand the repo to your agent' style install: AGENTS.md, a read-only check script, ask before acting, one-click undo.

### 9. Still unclear

- Where the single-day +68 stars on 10-30 came from (stargazers API 404; Instagram play counts unavailable).

- Instagram play counts and follower numbers.

- Real install base: how many people who got the link via 'Comment COUCH' DMs actually installed it; no data. The LG path has just one working test device, and Samsung was only tested on 2021 Frame model(s).

- Whether the author used an auto-DM tool like ManyChat (likely, inferred from the lead-capture script; unverified).
