> Over the past year, open-weight 3D generation, rigging and motion models have become commercially usable and small enough to fit on a 16GB card. This strings them into a pipeline that runs all the way to the engine, tapping indie game devs' "don't pay for credits" mood. The author cold-launched on r/aigamedev, and one 11-03 tweet with 26.8k views took it to 110 stars in two days.

# One tweet bought 110 stars: someone used AI to build a "local Meshy," but it isn't the first

**What it is** An open-source tool that runs offline on your own Windows PC, turning a sentence or an image into a 3D character that's remeshed, retextured, rigged, animated and exportable straight into Godot/Unreal/Unity, and it can also output pixel sprite sheets.

**Why it took off** Over the past year, open 3D generation, rigging and motion models that are licensed for commercial use and fit on a 16GB card have appeared; it chains them into a production line that ends at the engine, which hits the sentiment among indie game devs of "don't pay per credit"; the author cold-launched on r/aigamedev, and a 11-03 tweet with 26.8k views gained 110 stars in two days.

**C** **How you could follow** Don't build another local 3D asset workbench; take the same playbook to other verticals (game sound effects and music, level terrain, 3D print parts): chain recently released, commercially usable local models until the output is directly usable, state the license clearly, ship an MCP, put a chart with numbers in the README, then get AI-tool accounts to repost it.

C grade: the playbook is worth learning, but the 3D asset slot is already held by AssetFurnace, which was earlier and has four times the stars; Effigy itself has only a couple hundred stars. Projects like this top out in the hundreds to a thousand or two, and getting traction depends on someone else's tweet you can't control. Chatter in small circles

A developer with only 3 followers on GitHub released Effigy in Oct 14: on their own Windows PC with a 16GB graphics card, it turns a sentence or an image into a 3D character ready for game engines, doing remeshing, texturing, rigging, animation and export in one pipeline. 23 days, 243 stars, of which 110 came in the two days after someone else's tweet on Nov 3. What's worth looking at is how it's packaged: it chains newly released, commercially usable models into an end-to-end line. What's not worth doing is copying it—the same thing already exists, with four times the stars.

### A tweet on Nov 3

Nov 3 morning 6:42 (UTC), X user @dextune posted a tweet that nearly copies Effigy's README: "Generate a 3D character ready for the game from one image or one sentence, rigged and animated on your own GPU... Runs fully offline on a single 16GB NVIDIA card. No account, no credits, no uploads, and every model it uses is licensed for commercial use." It came with a few screenshots. By 11-06, the tweet had 26.8k views, 547 likes and 816 bookmarks. More bookmarks than likes, which is common for tool posts and means "saving it to install later."

The same day, an indie developer making a three.js game, @ItsmeAjayKV, quote-tweeted: "My three.js game is entirely vibe coded, and this is useful. Time to let agents call it."

GitHub's daily star counts line up neatly: 11-03 was 129 stars, 11-04 189 (+60), 11-05 239 (+50), and 11-06 back to +4.

### What it is

The README's first line: "Game-ready 3D assets, textures and 2D sprites from a picture or a sentence, made on your own GPU."

The pipeline works like this: a sentence first becomes four concept images (Z-Image-Turbo), or you supply an image directly; then it generates a 3D mesh with a choice of two engines, Microsoft's TRELLIS.2 (fast) and Pixal3D (closer to the source image); then it remeshes, decimates or converts to quads, unwraps UVs, and re-bakes the full PBR texture set; next it auto-rigs, with 52 joints for humanoids plus 8 creature templates for foxes, horses, dragons, spiders and more; animation can be retargeted from 178 CC0 motions, or generated from a sentence or a video; finally it exports to Godot, Unreal, Unity, GLB, STL. It can also render a 3D character into a side-scrolling pixel sprite sheet—the README shows a 21-move "Double Dragon"-style fighting move set, 382 frames, going into a Godot scene in about 7 seconds.

Three selling points sit most prominently on the homepage: **fully local** (nothing leaves the machine once installed), **clean for commercial use** (every model permits commercial output, and each export comes with CREDITS.txt and LICENSES.json), and **every step is versioned** , and it exposes an MCP interface so agents like Claude Code can drive it directly. The author summed it up in one line in the design doc: a fully local, open-source Meshy.

Meshy and Tripo are credit-based web services for 3D generation. One AI news writer 10-15 put it more bluntly when writing about it: many tools stop once they've generated a mesh, while Effigy takes it from there, covering the stretch from "a nice-looking blob" to "something I can drop into my engine", where "indie teams spend whole days stuck."

### Why now

A year ago this chain couldn't have been built. TRELLIS.2 (2025-11), Pixal3D, the SkinTokens rigging model (2026-02), NVIDIA's Kimodo text-to-motion and GEM-X video motion capture were all released within the last year, licensed for commercial use, and able to fit on a 16GB card. ComfyUI also added TRELLIS.2 and Pixal3D as native nodes this year, but it only goes as far as the mesh; everything after that you have to assemble yourself as a node graph.

What Effigy does, put simply, is glue: it trains no models, but chains these freshly released parts together and fills in all the tedious steps in between.

### One person, one agent

The author's account was created in 2026 February, has only this one repo and 3 followers, and has no X account; release times are recorded in Malaysia Time (MYT), so the person is most likely in Malaysia (inferred).

In 23 days there were 4 releases: v0.1.0 (10-14), v0.2.0 (10-20), v0.3.0 (11-05), v0.4.0 (11-06). The contributors list includes a `claude` account, and PRs are numbered "Milestone M63, M64…", each with a "Scope / Skipped on purpose" template—a way of writing that lets an AI coding agent advance through milestones. In other words, a pipeline this long was very likely built by one person working with Claude Code (inferred, high confidence).

But the author barely distributes it themselves: their YouTube demo video "Effigy Showcase" has only 36 views and 6 subscribers (11-06).

### Where the stars came from

| Timeline | Stars | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| 10-14 | 0 | v0.1.0 released; the author posted "PSA: Effigy - Your fully local 2D / 3D Asset generation studio" on Reddit r/aigamedev |
| 10-15 to 10-22 | About 80 | AI news sites and tool directories gradually listed it (ArtRealmAI, MindPattern, VibeStack Weekly, Loot Llama, etc.) |
| 10-21 | 74(+17) | One day after the v0.2.0 release |
| 10-22 to 11-03 | 80 → 129 | A long tail of two or three stars a day |
| 11-04, 11-05 | 189 → 239 | @dextune tweet (11-03) + v0.3.0 (11-05) |
| 11-06 | 243 | v0.4.0; the author posted "PSA - Effigy V0.4" on r/aigamedev again |

(Star counts: GitHub daily records; no day-by-day numbers before 10-17, distribution before 44 stars unverified. Reddit post votes and comments were blocked by a login wall and remain unverified.)

r/aigamedev is where it cold-launched, and that same period saw posts like "build your own local asset generator, don't pay for tools, don't burn tokens"; local and free matches what this community wants. Most of those AI news sites auto-generate content and get little traffic, but they make it findable in search. What really gave it a push was a tweet that wasn't from the author. No ads, Hacker News, Product Hunt or media coverage were found.

One more number worth noting: the recommended install in the README is to download the archive from Releases, and the four versions' attachments together were downloaded 252 times (GitHub, 11-06), about the same as the star count. It requires Windows 11, 16GB of VRAM and tens to over a hundred GB of model files, so far more people bookmark it than actually install it (inferred).

### Who's competing

| Name | What it is | Scale | Compared with Effigy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meshy / Tripo / Rodin | Web SaaS, charged per credit | Industry leaders | Cloud-based, requires uploads; Effigy is built specifically as the "local version" |
| AssetFurnace(Bingeljell/image-to-3dlab) | Open source, nearly the same thing | 1,113 stars, 2026-08-02 repo | Two and a half months earlier and four times the stars; supports Mac, NVIDIA and AMD, has a website, one-click install, Discord, and also sells cloud generation at 20 cents per use. Effigy goes deeper in the later stages: retopology, PBR re-baking, creature templates, video motion capture, pixel sprites. |
| ComfyUI (TRELLIS.2 / Pixal3D native nodes) | open-source node tools | 145K stars | only goes as far as the mesh; you assemble the rest yourself |
| Hunyuan3D-2, TRELLIS.2, SkinTokens, etc. | the models themselves | a few hundred to 10K+ stars | Effigy is the layer that chains them together |
| StableGen | AI texturing plugin for Blender | About 1,500 stars | texturing only; the Effigy author cites it in a PR |
| Asset-Jam-Studio | same concept: "fully local game asset studio" | 1 stars, 10-28 repo | not taking off yet |

There's also mcp-game-asset-forge by 10-22, with 69 stars, describing the same category. But its README is a "Download" button pointing to an external link, the kind of bait repo common on GitHub. It's not a real competitor, just proof that someone else is riding the same trend.

The AssetFurnace row matters most: the "local Meshy" spot was already taken, so Effigy is not the first to claim it. Its 243 stars are on the scale of one tweet plus one community post, not the payoff of being first in the category.

### What can be copied

- **The packaging** : pick one vertical, chain the models that opened up in the past year and are licensed for commercial use into a production line that runs all the way to the end (not just to "a result" but to "usable as-is"), write out each license clearly, then expose it via MCP for agents to call. "Clean for commercial use" is quoted verbatim in the tweet, and game devs really care about that.

- **README written to be shareable** : the hero image shows 16 characters with skeleton points drawn on them, with a line below reading "16 of 12 needed no fixing". The pixel sprite image reads "21 moves, 382 frames, about 7 seconds". The @dextune tweet is almost the README's first few paragraphs.

- **High release cadence** : 23 releases in 4 days, each one giving news sites and communities a reason to post again.

- **AI coding makes it affordable for one person** : a production line chaining a dozen-plus models used to be a small-team job.

### If it were you

**Verdict** : C. There's a playbook to learn here, but building a "local game 3D asset workbench" on it isn't worth it. AssetFurnace already has the spot and four times the stars, and Effigy itself sits at just over two hundred. This niche tops out in the hundreds to a thousand or two stars, and the spikes depend on someone else's tweet you can't control.

**Who it's for** : people making games or 3D work who know where generated models fall short, and who have an NVIDIA card with 16GB+ of VRAM and want to apply the approach to other niches.

**Not for:** people chasing thousands of stars or viral reach (this kind of project only circulates inside the AI game dev circle); people with no GPU who can only rely on cloud APIs; and anyone planning to go head-to-head with Effigy and AssetFurnace on 3D assets.

**How to build it** : switch domains, keep the playbook. Candidates: game audio and music (text-to-SFX, seamless loops, loudness normalization, export in engine formats), levels and terrain, UI icon packs, 3D print prep (generate → make it solid → slice into printable parts). For each one, check three things first: is there a recent, commercially licensed model that runs locally; do the existing tools all stop at "output"; are people in that field paying for credits or complaining about them. Put one image in the first screen of the README that shows the result at a glance, with one concrete number under it. If you stick with 3D, go after the part nobody has done well: the full post-processing pipeline on Apple Silicon, or doing one asset type (weapons, vehicles, buildings) better than anyone else.

**How to get stars** : post first to the relevant subreddits (r/aigamedev, r/gamedev, r/LocalLLaMA, etc.), then turn the README's first three paragraphs and two images into a tweet-style post and send it straight to mid-sized accounts that recommend AI tools. Effigy's own video got 36 views; a third-party tweet got 26.8k views. Post again on the day of each release.

**Before when** : the next few months. The window to chain newly opened models into a production line closes once big tech bakes the same capability into its own tools (or ComfyUI ships a ready-made end-to-end workflow); the 3D asset slot is already closed.

**What it would mean you read this wrong** : if Effigy outgrows AssetFurnace within a month, or gets picked up by big accounts into the thousands of stars, then going deep after the first release is worth more than shipping first, and the 3D slot is still open. Conversely, if you switch fields, copy the posts and tweets, and are still at a few dozen stars after a month, then Effigy's 110 stars came from @dextune's one post, not from a repeatable playbook.

## SifuInTheShell/Effigy: why it got 23 stars in 243 days

> Channel: GitHub | Research date: 2026-11-06 | Data card: gh_SifuInTheShell__Effigy.json

### One line

Effigy is a game asset workbench that runs **fully locally on Windows 11 with a single NVIDIA card of 16GB or more** : one sentence or one image → concept art → 3D mesh (TRELLIS.2 / Pixal3D) → mesh cleanup, decimation/quad retopology, UV, PBR re-baking → auto-rigging (52-joint humanoid + 8 creature templates) → 178 CC0 motion retargeting / text-to-motion (Kimodo) / video motion capture (GEM-X) → export to Godot / Unreal / Unity / GLB+USDZ / STL, plus 2D pixel sprite sheets. MIT licensed, with an MCP server so agents can drive it. The author's own positioning in docs/PLAN.md is "a fully local, open-source Meshy.ai" (source: github.com/SifuInTheShell/Effigy/blob/main/docs/PLAN.md).

### Data

- Repo created 2026-10-14, v0.1.0 released the same day (10-14 22:19 UTC); v0.2.0 10-20; v0.3.0 11-05; v0.4.0 11-06 (GitHub releases API).

- Stars (our GitHub repo_day / data card): 10-17 44 → 10-21 74 (+17 in a single day after v0.2.0) → 11-03 129 → **11-04 189 (+60) → 11-05 239 (+50)** → 11-06 243; +136 over the last 7 days, +25 over the prior 7 days. 26 forks, forks/stars ≈ 11%, a normal ratio, no sign of star-farming (suspect list in the repo is empty).

- The author's account was 2026-02, has only this repo, 3 followers, and no X account; timestamps are in MYT, suggesting they're in Malaysia (per the ArtRealmAI article). One contributor is `claude` (picked up from the repo page via Exa), and PRs are numbered by "Milestone M63/M64…" with a "Scope / Skipped on purpose" template, clearly engineering done by an agent like Claude Code working through milestones. An external contributor, LukeLikesGit, also submitted AMD ROCm support (PR #9).

- The author's own YouTube "Effigy Showcase" has only 36 views and 6 subscribers (per the r.jina.ai read of the YouTube page), which shows the author's own distribution is weak.

### Growth: where users come from

1. **r/aigamedev self-post (cold start, 0→~50 stars)** . The author posted "PSA : Effigy - Your fully local 2D / 3D Asset generation studio" in r/aigamedev (about 3 weeks ago, per Brave), then later "Effigy Showcase - Full Workflow Video" and "PSA - Effigy V0.4" (11-06). The same subreddit had discussions in the same period like "Build your own local asset generators, do not pay for tools or waste tokens", and local/free is exactly the community's current mood. The Reddit page was blocked by a captcha, so vote and comment counts are **unverified** .

2. **Auto-ingestion by AI news aggregators and directory sites (long-tail exposure)** . ArtRealmAI wrote a long article the day after v0.1.0 (2026-10-15); MindPattern (10-16), VibeStack Weekly Issue #002, a Loot Llama tool review (10-22), Upstar, trendshift, reporank, gitofanton and others all have pages. Most of these sites are AI-generated with small traffic, but they provide SEO and a surface for being discovered.

3. **The X post that drove the 11-04/05 spike (timing confirmed)** . @dextune posted "Effigy v0.2.0 Game ready 3D characters from a picture or a sentence, rigged and animated on your own GPU…" at 2026-11-03 06:42 UTC, with a screenshot and repo link. It got 26.8k views (r.jina.ai read of the x.com page, 26.8K views). Same day, @ItsmeAjayKV quote-tweeted: "For my three.js game, entirely vibe coded, this will come in handy. Time to point agent to this." agentik-os's Dev Radar counts it "shared in 3 posts (7.9k views)". Right after, 11-04 +60 and 11-05 +50. Our x-radar corpus has no Effigy hits (0 results), so it spread through smaller accounts we don't track.

4. **Frequent releases** : 4 versions in 23 days; v0.3.0 landed right after the X post on 11-05, and Upstar's "Why now" line reads "v0.3.0 came out on November 5". Each release gives the aggregator sites another reason to show it.

No evidence of ads, creators, HN, Product Hunt, or major media picking it up. GitHub trending doesn't count repos younger than 60 days, so that's not a factor either.

### Competitors

| Name | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs from Effigy |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Meshy / Tripo / Rodin(Hyper3D) | Web SaaS | 2023–2024 | Industry-leading commercial product (user count unverified) | Cloud-based, credit-priced, assets sit on someone else's servers. Effigy is built as the "local Meshy" |
| AssetFurnace(Bingeljell/image-to-3dlab) | Open source | 2026-08-02 | 1,112 stars, +78 in the last 7 days | **Nearly the same thing, earlier, with more stars** : Pixal3D/TRELLIS.2/Hunyuan3D/SF3D, auto rigging, 21 animations. Supports Mac + NVIDIA + AMD, has a website, one-line curl install, Discord, an X account, and sells 20¢ one-time cloud generation. Effigy's edge is deeper in the back half (retopology, PBR re-baking, 52 joint + 8 creature rigs, 178 animations, video motion capture, pixel sprites, Unreal LOD/collision) and its explicit "clean for commercial use" licensing promise |
| ComfyUI (TRELLIS.2 + native Pixal3D nodes) | Open source | 2023 / 3D nodes 2026 | 145K stars | Stops at "export a mesh"; cleanup, rigging, animation, and engine export are on you. The barrier is the node graph |
| Tencent Hunyuan3D-2 / 2.1 | Open-source model | 2025-01 / 2025-06 | 15k / 4.4k stars | The models themselves, not a production line. Effigy is the glue that chains these models together |
| microsoft/TRELLIS.2 | Open-source model | 2025-11 | 12.7K stars | Same as above; Effigy's Fast engine |
| VAST UniRig / SkinTokens | Open-source model | 2025-04 / 2026-02 | 2,058 / 607 stars | Only does rigging/skinning; Effigy uses SkinTokens as one step |
| HurtzDonutStudios/ai-forge-mcp | Open source | 2026-03-25 | 101 stars | Takes the route of "MCP controlling commercial software like Blender/Substance", not local model generation |
| StableGen | Open-source Blender add-on | 2025-05 | 1,496 stars | Only does AI textures inside Blender; Effigy's author wrote in PR #13 that they referenced StableGen's evaluation |
| img2threejs | Open source | 2026-07 | 20K stars | Rebuilds images as procedural three.js code, not mesh assets. Different route |
| LiamDobbelaere/Asset-Jam-Studio | Open source | 2026-10-28 | 1 stars | Same "fully local game asset studio" concept, hasn't taken off yet |
| Blender agent skills (EL4CTEO/blender-skills 725 stars, blender-game-skills 173 stars) | Open source | 2026-09/10 | See left | Lets Claude Code operate Blender to make assets, without bundling local generation models |

### Copycats

- Rijalmoneyfinder/mcp-game-asset-forge (created 2026-10-22, 69 stars): describes the same kind of "prompt → rigged character → engine" pipeline, but the README's "Download" button is an svg pointing to github.io, matching the common bait/malicious-download repo pattern on GitHub. **Not a real competitor** , but it shows the niche is already being copied.

- Asset-Jam-Studio (10-28,1 stars) is a newer repo with the same concept. Overall, nobody has yet replicated Effigy as-is.

### Why it took off (in fact, a "small spike")

- **Timing** : between 2025-11 and 2026, open models (TRELLIS.2, Pixal3D, SkinTokens, Kimodo, GEM-X, Z-Image-Turbo, FLUX.2-klein) all became usable commercially and fit on 16GB cards, so "do the whole chain locally" became feasible for the first time. ComfyUI just brought TRELLIS.2/Pixal3D into core, and community attention landed right there.

- **Emotion it hit** : r/aigamedev's "don't pay for tools, don't burn tokens" sentiment, and vibe-coding game devs on X (AJ: "Time to point agent to this"). No accounts, no credits, clean for commercial use, and callable by agents.

- **Good demo** : the README has an image of "16 characters + skeleton points" and a "Double Dragon 21-move" pixel sprite, plus a bench doc (12/16 character skeletons need no fixes). The selling point is the stretch from "nice blob" to "goes into an engine", exactly where ordinary tools stop (ArtRealmAI's words).

- **Distribution came from others** : the author's own video had 36 views; what really pushed it was @dextune's 26.8k-view post and the auto-aggregator sites.

### Differentiation

- Versus Meshy/Tripo: local, free, no uploads, commercial licensing itemized in CREDITS.txt/LICENSES.json.

- Versus model repos/ComfyUI: not a model, but **a complete production line to the engine** (versioned, rollback-able, VRAM management, two-way Blender links, Unreal LOD + collision).

- Versus the closest one, AssetFurnace: the flow is longer and deeper (retopology + PBR re-baking, creature templates, video motion capture, pixel sprites, texture workspace), MIT rather than Apache, and only admits commercially clean models. But the platform is narrower (Windows 11 + NVIDIA only, AMD only on the Fast chain), and there's no website, Discord, or paid cloud entry point.

- **Is this why it took off?** : "full chain + local + commercially clean" is indeed the line people quoted when sharing (dextune's post nearly copies the README), so the differentiation doubled as shareable material. But the same niche already has AssetFurnace at 1,100 stars, which suggests the "local Meshy" slot isn't Effigy's alone. Effigy's 243 stars are at the level of one viral post plus community threads, not first-mover category returns.

### Visibility

Spreading in small circles: an r/aigamedev post by the author, a mid-size 26.8k-view post on X, and a batch of AI auto-aggregator sites. No big accounts or media coverage; our X corpus has 0 posts on it.

### What others can borrow

- The packaging of "stitch the newest open models into a vertical production chain + clean licensing + MCP for agents" can be copied to other verticals (sound effects, level design, UI kits, 3D printing).

- The README speaks through bench images and concrete numbers (12/16, 21-move 382 frames, under 1 minutes), which makes it easy to restate as a post.

- High release frequency (23 releases in 4 days) keeps the aggregators re-indexing it; a single mid-size post brought +110 stars.

### Uncertain

- Reddit post upvotes and comment counts (blocked by a captcha).

- @dextune's account size and whether it was paid or a cross-promo (unverified).

- Actual downloads/usage: needs 60–160GB of disk and Windows + RTX, a high barrier, so stars probably far exceed real users. Release download counts not checked.

- Whether it can keep growing while AssetFurnace already holds the spot depends on what comes next.
