A Douyin video with 40k likes sent over fifty thousand downloads to GitHub: DangoMusic, a Minecraft music mod with lyrics floating in-game

What it is A Minecraft mod: scan a QR code in-game to log into NetEase Cloud Music, QQ Music, or Kugou, and the lyrics float in the world one character at a time, in 3D.

Why it blew up The visuals are good enough to film straight into short videos. The author's own Douyin post got 40k likes, then a wave of MC creators picked it up. The mod was only released on GitHub, so everyone who wanted it had to go to the repo page to download, and some of them starred it on the way.

BHow you could copy it Don't build "listen to music in MC" again. Copy the playbook: make a visual effect people want to film the moment they see it (a boss-fight line, horror-map subtitles, or move it to another game). Have the author post a 15-second demo themselves, keep the caption to just "search the name on github," release in one place only (GitHub), and ship updates often.

B grade: the Douyin demo plus single-entry GitHub funnel is clear and copyable, but the in-game music angle is already crowded with predecessors and copycats, and the traffic-to-star conversion is weak (56k downloads only turned into 500 extra stars). You'd also be betting on making a visual that actually goes viral. Circulating in small circles

An author with only 23 followers on GitHub built a Minecraft mod that plays NetEase Cloud Music, QQ Music, and Kugou, with lyrics floating character by character through a block world. In 23 days it climbed to 568 stars, while the most-starred predecessor in the same niche has 170. Its stars didn't come from developer circles. They came from Douyin: one demo video and one line, "search it on github." Below: what it is, how it spread, who's already copying it, and how to get your own open-source project the same kind of stars.

One video, one line: "search it on github"

In 2026 Oct 14, GitHub user Sorihiko created the DangoMusic repo and shipped v1.0.0 the same day. About a day later (10-14 at 11:30 North American time), the author posted a demo video under the Douyin account neverfullcombo with a single line of caption:

3d lyric built-in player, an idea from middle school. Want to play the mod? Search DangoMusic on GitHub. Supports newer versions.

This account had only 1,314 followers until then, and each earlier video got a few dozen likes at most. This one reached 40,171 likes, 11,601 saves, 10,020 shares, and 1,411 comments (Douyin, 11-06).

The comments tell the story. The top comment (8,882 likes) reads: "What if you added some horror or puzzle mods too? In a scene where lines or music play on both sides. It'd be more immersive when added in post-edit videos." The second (2,708 likes): "This could work for boss fights in tons of combat packs." Someone else said, "The lyric style is already perfect for edited storybook-style videos. Just walk through any pretty landscape seed and record it, and you have footage." In other words, viewers' first reaction wasn't "I want to listen to music," it was "this would look great in my videos." Most of the rest were "what's the github name," "does it work on 1.21.8 fabric," and "can newbies just drop it into a modpack?"

What it is

A Minecraft client mod. Press M in-game to open the player, and log into NetEase Cloud Music, QQ Music, or Kugou by scanning a QR code, using your own playlists and memberships. The currently playing lyrics float through the world as 3D text with glow and shake effects. There's also a liquid-glass style player UI, a "Dynamic Island" bar at the top of the screen, and "listen together" with room codes to sync to the same second with friends.

Version coverage is broad: from 1.8.9 (which even PvP players on the Lunar client still use) up to the latest 26.3, with jars for Fabric, Forge, and NeoForge. Open source, GPL-3.0, free.

Why this one took off

"Listen to NetEase Cloud Music in MC" is not a new need. 2021 already had Net Music, a network music machine, with 6.2M downloads on CurseForge. Several small mods that only connect to NetEase exist, and none of them took off. MuoniumPlayer, which appeared in August this year, follows the same route with even more sources (8, including Spotify and Bilibili), and DangoMusic's README openly says its layout takes cues from MuoniumPlayer. Yet the two Muonium repos combined have less than 40 stars.

The difference comes down to three things:

The visuals can be filmed directly. 3D floating, character-by-character lyrics, with light effects and songs by Jay Chou and Xu Jiayin, make the idea clear in 15 seconds. The equivalent predecessors didn't have that moment, and none had a breakout demo.

The author posted the video personally and kept only one entry point. The mod only ships jars on GitHub Releases, and it can't be found on Modrinth or CurseForge. On Douyin, people who wanted to play had to go to the GitHub repo page to download, and a small share of them starred it on the way.

It fits Chinese players right away. Overseas equivalents (like the Music Player with 4.1M downloads on CurseForge) connect to YouTube and SoundCloud, which don't open in China. DangoMusic connects to the three major Chinese platforms and works after a QR scan.

Where users come from

Put the two numbers side by side and the picture is clear: jars across all 11-06,15 versions have been downloaded 55,987 times in total (GitHub, 11-06; each version has a dozen-plus jars and includes repeat updates, so it's not a head count), while stars sit at 568. MC players on Douyin are mostly students, who download but rarely star. Stars are the small amount that leaked out of this download flow, and the two differ by two orders of magnitude.

It never made GitHub Trending, and I found no discussion on HN, Reddit, or V2EX. No sign of paid acquisition or star-buying. The creator recommendations look organic (inferred; I found no sponsored deals).

One detail that's easy to miss: in 23 days it shipped 15 versions, adding single-track loop, Chinese and English interfaces, and key rebinding as requested in the comments. Every update gave creators a fresh reason to post "it's updated, go try it," which is how Sun.'s 10k-like video came about.

On Douyin, people are already posting videos with near-identical names like "Bangomusic." This specific idea is no longer new in the Chinese MC scene.

There's also a risk: all three music platforms are accessed through unofficial APIs, and the README itself says "for learning and exchange only." Any day the APIs could be blocked or a lawyer's letter could arrive.

If it were you

B This route works, but don't build "listen to music in MC" itself. What's worth copying is the playbook: make a visual effect people want to film the moment they see it, have the author post a short video, caption it "search XXX on github," and release in one place only. Keep expectations modest: five or six tens of thousands of downloads might turn into five or six hundred stars.

Who it suits: developers who make things regular players or ordinary users install, like game mods, browser extensions, or desktop tools. You need to be able to record a 15-second demo yourself, ideally in a game community already active on Douyin or Bilibili. Students and hobbyist modders are a good fit.

Who it doesn't suit: backend libraries, dev frameworks, or command-line tools (these can't produce visuals, and people on Douyin won't install them), and anyone wanting to make a DangoMusic reskin (Muonium and MineKUmusic are already competing for it, and the original author is still shipping two or three versions a week).

How to do it: first pick something that can be filmed, then pick a spot nobody has done well. A few ways to follow:

  • Change the setting: commenters already suggested directions like boss-fight lines, horror-map subtitles, and parkour videos with lyrics, packaged as an "in-game subtitle show" mod for MC story and video creators;
  • Switch games: take the same "3D lyrics + domestic music platform" idea over to games like Terraria and Stardew Valley, which have active Chinese mod communities (my inference, not verified whether they already have something like this);
  • Change the ecosystem: look at Chrome extensions, desktop lyrics, or the Steam Workshop for a visual utility Chinese users want, where overseas solutions don't work in China.

Cover versions broadly, ship fast, and in the first month, implement what the comments ask for.

How to get users: the author posts the first video personally, with one entry point in the caption, "search name on github," and doesn't list on other distribution sites at the same time. In the first week, reply to every comment on "which version works." With each release, record new features as a new video to give recommending creators fresh material. Accounts like GitHubDaily on X will find you on their own once you take off, so there's no need to pay for placement early.

Deadline: there's no hard deadline, and this isn't a window-type opportunity. But this specific "3D lyrics" effect already has at least two projects chasing it. If you want a similar build in MC, anything not out within a month or two won't matter.

Ways this could be misread: (1) DangoMusic's stars stalled at just over 600 by late November while downloads kept climbing, which shows this route has a very low star ceiling. It's only worth doing for users, not for stars. (2) Someone copied this playbook (Douyin demo plus GitHub-only release) for other game mods or plugins, and the videos went viral, but the stars never passed one hundred. So DangoMusic's success depended on MC's very large student player base, and it doesn't transfer elsewhere. (3) If NetEase, Tencent, or Kugou moves to block the APIs or pull the mod, that shows the "connect Chinese platform accounts" approach doesn't hold up on its own.

Why DangoMusic (Sorihiko/DangoMusic) took off

Channel: GitHub | Research date: 2026-11-06 | Data card: fanout/why/cards/gh_Sorihiko__DangoMusic.json

One line

A Minecraft client mod: scan a QR code in-game to log in to NetEase Cloud Music, QQ Music, or Kugou and listen. Word-by-word lyrics float in the block world as 3D, with a liquid-glass player, Dynamic Island-style UI, and listen-together mode. It caught fire on Douyin, not through the GitHub community: the author's first demo video on Douyin (2026-10-14) got 40k likes and 10k shares, with the caption "want to play the mod? search DangoMusic on GitHub." Then a dozen MC mod creators followed with recommendation videos (1 thousand to 11k likes each). The mod ships only on GitHub Releases, not Modrinth or CurseForge, so Douyin viewers had to download from GitHub, and a small share of them starred it on the way. Stars were a byproduct of that download traffic.

Note: asset download counts add up the downloads of each jar file. Each version has over ten jars (different MC versions and loaders), and downloads include existing users' update downloads, so they are not user counts. They only show downloads run about two orders of magnitude above stars. Trendshift's daily star figures (10-28 shows only +8) don't match our database (10-28 +144), likely due to different snapshot times. This report uses our database.

Conclusion: "listening to NetEase Cloud Music inside MC" was built 2021 years ago, and the most-downloaded Net Music has already passed 6M+. DangoMusic didn't open up a new need. Its strengths are three: visuals good enough to shoot as video (3D floating word-by-word lyrics + liquid glass + Dynamic Island-style UI), all three major domestic platforms can be logged into with your own account via QR code, and the widest version coverage (1.8.9 to 26.3, three loaders, even Lunar client supported).

3. Growth: where users came from

3.1 Origin: the author's own Douyin post (confirmed)

  • 2026-10-14 23:33 (PST), about a day after the database was built, the author's Douyin account neverfullcombo posted "3d lyrics built-in player, an idea from junior high. Want to play the mod? Search DangoMusic on GitHub, supports newer versions", 40,171 likes, 11,601 saves, 1,411 comments, 10,020 shares. Before this, each of the account's posts only had a few dozen likes at most. This was the only one that blew up (TikHub video list).
  • The video made "search it on GitHub" the only entry point, funneling Douyin traffic to GitHub Releases. But stars barely moved at first: by 10-26 there were only 39 stars in total, while v1.4.1 (10-24) alone had 6,523 asset downloads. Douyin MC players are mostly students. They download, but they don't tend to star.

3.2 Second wave: Douyin MC mod creators pushing it in bulk (10-25 to 11-04, confirmed)

Videos found by searching TikHub Douyin for "DangoMusic / dangomusic mod / 团子音乐" (times in PST):

Just the few that confirmed they're talking about DangoMusic have over 38k likes. The star jumps (10-27 +70, 10-28 +144) landed right in this wave (Sun., 雨伞, and 无敌暴力威尔 all posted around 10-27/28). Most creators recommended it on their own; no sponsored deals found.

3.3 Bilibili (confirmed, smaller scale than Douyin)

  • Greedy_粉高高瘦 10-16 "Lyrics shown in-game in a built-in NetEase Cloud Music player [with download]" 8,247 plays, description reads "author dy account neverfullcombo". This is the earliest third-party video found so far.

3.4 Chinese developer accounts on X (confirmed; this traffic came from the "GitHub circle")

  • Geek Lite (@QingQ77) 2026-10-28 23:53 UTC posted an introduction, 885 views.
  • GitHubDaily (@GitHub_Daily) 2026-10-30 posted, framing it as "listen to music while playing MC without alt-tabbing". This is a major Chinese GitHub recommendation account; view count not captured.
  • Both came after the star jumps from 10-27/28. What can reasonably be attributed to them is the stretch from 10-29 to 11-01 when it was roughly +28 to +48 per day. Related posts are not in the x-radar local corpus.

3.5 Not found

No evidence of paid acquisition, sponsored posts, or star-buying; not on GitHub Trending; no discussion found on HN / Reddit / V2EX / linux.do.

4. Why it took off

  1. The visuals are built for short video: 3D karaoke-style lyrics float through the blocky world, with glow and jitter effects, set against shaders and Chinese pop (JJ Lin, Xu Jiaying, Luo Tianyi). Viewers get it in 15 seconds and want it right away. Douyin mod creators could make "immersive listening" content straight from it, which is why one video from the author set off a wave of creator recommendations.
  2. The author posts on Douyin personally and makes GitHub the only entry point: "Want to play the mod? Search github for DangoMusic", and it's not listed on Modrinth or CurseForge, so every download goes through the GitHub repo page. This directly explains how stars reached 500+ (the closest predecessors peaked at 170 stars).
  3. Hits a real pain point for Chinese players: NetEase Cloud Music, QQ Music, and Kugou can all log in via QR code inside the game, using your own playlists and memberships, and it works on domestic networks directly. Overseas equivalents (Music Player, YouTube audio sources) don't work in China.
  4. Wide version coverage, fast updates: covers 1.8.9 (PVP / Hypixel / Lunar players) through 26.3, with Fabric / Forge / NeoForge all supported. 23 days, 15 versions shipped. Based on comment feedback they added single-track loop, Chinese/English UI, and key remapping. Each update also gives creators fresh "just updated, go try it" material (like that Sun. post).
  5. Listen together: room codes sync playback to the same second, so multiplayer use carries social spread built in.

5. Differentiation

  • Compared with Net Music, a block-item-based mod: DangoMusic is a personal "Apple Music inside the game" that logs into your own account and uses your own playlists, and the lyrics become visual elements of the game world.
  • Compared with MuoniumPlayer, a predecessor on the same path: the features are similar, and Muonium's audio sources are even more numerous. The difference is that DangoMusic's 3D lyrics are standout, version coverage is broader, and the author's own 40k-like video drove the initial traction. The UI layout was modeled on Muonium (the author admits this).
  • Is differentiation what made it take off? Yes, but what mattered was "it looks good", not feature count. The 3D lyrics are the thing people want to film and share; Muonium, with equal features but no hit video, got only 20 stars.

6. Visibility / copycats

  • Visibility: it has spread widely in the Chinese MC Douyin scene (more than a dozen recommendation videos, tens of thousands of likes combined). In GitHub and developer circles it was only mentioned by accounts like GitHubDaily; almost no one overseas knows about it. It's open-source and free, so there's no revenue.
  • Copycats:
    • MineKUmusic (kuxiaole, built 10-27): directly based on DangoMusic code, adds server-wide song requests and paid song requests via Vault, posted on MineBBS (10-28)
    • dango-party-server (Tea-chabai, 10-30): third-party self-hosted server for listening together
    • MuoniumPlayer-multiversion's description now includes "3D lyrics" and its site calls itself "the most popular Minecraft music client mod"; there's also MuoniumPlayer-Next (built 11-05)
    • On Douyin, people are already posting videos under near-identical names like "Bangomusic", and some run "download tutorial" accounts to drive traffic

7. Takeaways

  • For open-source client plugins / mods, the best cold-start channels may be Douyin and Bilibili, not HN / X: the author recorded a 15-second demo of "what it looks like when done", with copy that just says "search XXX on github", consolidating distribution into one entry point.
  • Start with the single point best suited to video (3D lyrics), then keep feeding creators fast iterations that give them "updated" material for secondary spread.
  • QR-code login on domestic platforms plus full version coverage are the basic conditions for beating overseas equivalents in the Chinese MC ecosystem.

8. Uncertain

  • Without the GitHub per-user star timestamps (the stargazers API returns empty / 404), it can't be confirmed which Douyin video caused the 10-27/28 jump; the timing match is only inference.
  • I haven't checked how much of DangoMusic's share comes from the top-liked videos (Block Observer, Yan Xiaoyan, Tianzhe), which I did not review one by one.
  • Actual user count is unknown (asset download counts include repeat downloads and multiple jars).
