> "Drive the whole world, all the way to my front door" can be turned into a video in one sentence. It launched the same week as the BeamNG 0.40 and PS5 version trailers. Small creators made videos on their own, every download link pointed to GitHub Releases, and players clicked star while downloading the exe.

# 1.55M people watched him drive home: BeamNG.Earth packs the whole Earth into a crash game, and the stars were a side effect

**What it is** : An open-source mod for BeamNG.drive, the soft-body crash physics game. It uses real terrain, satellite imagery, and OpenStreetMap roads and buildings to generate a 1:1 full-scale Earth in real time for you to drive.

**Why it took off** : "You can drive the whole Earth and reach your own front door" works as a one-line video hook. It launched the same week as the BeamNG 0.40 and PS5 version trailers. Mid-sized streamers made videos on their own, and every download link pointed to GitHub Releases, so players grabbed the exe and starred the repo along the way.

**B** **How to ride it** Don't build another one in BeamNG. Take the "drive the real Earth" idea to a different game with a modding scene and no good real-map version yet (racing, truck sim, Minecraft). Use open data plus AI to write the code, time it to that game's major update, and DM the mid-size streamers who make mods for it.

Grade B: Copying this to another game is doable, the playbook is clear, and the data and tools already exist. But BeamNG's spot is taken, so you're betting on the host game's timing and on streamers covering it. Millions of views only turned into about a thousand-plus stars, so conversion is low. ### One comment, 6,200 likes

In Oct 19, Gaming with Griff Griffin, a YouTube channel with 111k subscribers, posted "BeamNG.drive has a 1:1 scale Earth map now": a high-altitude view of New York, then a red supercar driving up a mountain. The description has only a credit line and a link to the GitHub Releases page. As of 11-06, the video has 1.55M views and 21k likes (YouTube, 11-06).

The top comment isn't from the streamer; it's from the author: "Thanks for playing my mod! I'm working every day to improve generation quality and performance." It has 6,200 likes. Another comment with 1,700 likes is a typical one: "I downloaded this mod, found my hometown, drove to my front door, and I can't believe how accurate the road network is." Others said "using it for a cannonball run (coast to coast)," "finally I can drive a long-haul truck," and "this is what I imagined 25 years ago."

The day before, Spealer, a channel with 27.6k subscribers, posted "You Can Drive Around the ENTIRE EARTH in BeamNG!" with 499k views. His description is even more direct: "Go to github.com/TecnaGamer/BeamNG.Earth/releases, download the EXE, and launch it." In the same description he added that after making the video he realized the mod was probably written with help from Claude: "I have mixed feelings about vibe coding, but it's really cool."

### What it is

BeamNG.drive is a PC driving game known for soft-body physics and realistic crashes, and its official maps are all handmade small tiles. BeamNG.Earth runs a Python world server alongside the game. It streams real terrain, aerial and satellite imagery, and OpenStreetMap roads and buildings into the game in real time as your car moves. You can always see the horizon, there's Earth curvature, and you can even drive to the South Pole.

All the data is open: national LiDAR and Copernicus 30-meter elevation, US NAIP and orthophotos from a dozen countries, cloud-free Sentinel-2 imagery, and Overture and OSM buildings. More layers are stacked on top: real-time sun, moon, and stars, live Open-Meteo weather (wind pushes the car), seasonal colors, AI traffic, bridges and tunnels, US highway signs, and BeamMP multiplayer. The repo is MIT licensed and installs from a single exe.

### When the stars came

| Date | star | What happened those days |
|---|---|---|
| 10-10 | — | Repo created |
| 10-16 | — | Public launch post on r/BeamNG |
| 10-17 | 3 | The Reddit post itself brought almost no stars |
| 10-18 | 48 | Spealer video (499k views) |
| 10-19 | 56 | Griff Griffin video (1.55M views); same day, BeamNG's official channel posted a 0.40 graphics overhaul video, and PlayStation put out a PS5 version trailer |
| 10-22 | 501 | +158 in a single day, the peak day |
| 10-26 | 993 | Russian and Italian channels picked it up in turn: Pop News 1.55M, ARSIKKK 392k, NU89 286k; VGTimes tweeted about it on X |
| 11-04 to 11-05 | 1,511 → 1,537 | Bulkin (5.02M subscribers) 515k, MuYe (1.28M subscribers) 427k |
| 11-06 | 1,578 | Last 7 days +263, first 7 days +814; GitHub live count on the day about 1,700 |

Data: GitHub daily stars; YouTube view counts, 11-06.

Two points are worth being clear about. First, stars line up closely with the videos. The Reddit post and media coverage brought almost no direct stars, Hacker News never picked it up, and nobody in the tech crowd on X talked about it. Second, conversion is very low: the videos together got 5M views, but only about a thousand stars. The 51 stable releases have roughly 290k cumulative downloads (GitHub Releases, 11-06; this includes auto-updates and repeat downloads, so real players are likely tens of thousands or more). People who come to GitHub are there to download something; starring is just a side click.

### Why this one

**One sentence is enough to make a video.** "The entire Earth 1:1 can be driven," plus BeamNG's crash physics, and the title sells itself. Spealer drove a car up Everest and dropped it off, and his 27k-subscriber channel pulled nearly 500k views. The first reaction from viewers is almost always "let me drive to my house," which is exactly the kind of thing that gets people to download.

**The demand was proven two years ago.** In BeamNG's official mod library, Willfa's "The Whole World 1:1" from 2024 November was a low-poly, blurry, jittery whole-Earth map that only worked for flying planes. It still got 43k downloads and nearly 20k subscribers. People wanted it; nobody had done it well.

**It landed in the host game's biggest-traffic week.** 10-16 went public, and three days later BeamNG's 0.40 graphics update and the PS5 trailer dropped on the same day. That week BeamNG videos were pulling millions of views, and creators were hunting for new things to film. PS5 players couldn't use this external-program mod, but attention on the whole category was lifted.

**It's far more complete than the rivals that popped up at the same time.** In October several showed up together: EarthNG, built by 10-13, made all of Ukraine first (its map pack is 2.96 GB), and MapNG is a web tool that generates one static level chunk at a time. Only BeamNG.Earth is a seamless whole Earth with satellite imagery on the ground, in a single exe. Creators can tell the difference at a glance. EarthNG's author later posted on Reddit claiming "I was the first to do this," but its stars stalled at 85.

**AI writes the code, updates ship daily.** The author made 1,765 commits, many of them with Claude credited in the messages. In three weeks: 110k lines of code, 51 official releases, and 210 dev builds. When players said AI traffic drove backwards, buildings floated, or bridges were wrong, fixes shipped within days. Creators came back a week later with new things to film.

**The download entry point could only live on GitHub.** It runs a program alongside the game rather than being a plain zip mod, so it couldn't go into the official mod library. As a result, every creator's description linked to GitHub Releases, and player traffic landed on GitHub at scale for the first time. Similar mods were posted on beamng.com, so they got no stars on GitHub. It's now the most-starred BeamNG-related repo on GitHub, ahead of the official multiplayer mod BeamMP (538).

**Players become contributors.** The README and every release route people to the #beamng-earth channel of the author's TGForever Discord (5,599 members), where they post multiplayer server IPs and report bugs. About 50 outside contributors have submitted PRs: highway signs, golf courses, dirt-road potholes, each credited by name in the README.

### Who's racing, who's following

| Name | Form | Scale | Compared with BeamNG.Earth |
|---|---|---|---|
| EarthNG | Open-source native BeamNG mod | 85 star | Pre-generated map packs by country, not a seamless Earth, no satellite imagery on the surface |
| MapNG | Web tools | About 80–97 stars | Generates one static level chunk at a time, aimed at map makers; the selling point is "no AI, made by one person" |
| The Whole World 1:1 | Static maps in the official mod library | 43k downloads | Low-poly, only usable for flying planes |
| Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 | big-company products | — | Whole-Earth streaming has long been mature, but only for flying; VGTimes sells this mod as "BeamNG turned into MSFS" |
| map2lap(10-30) | Open source | Just getting started | Explicitly "built on BeamNG.Earth," bringing real roads into Assetto Corsa |

Two third-party fan sites, beamng.earth and beamngearth.com, are already competing for the search term "BeamNG Earth."

### Can you follow it?

Strike out what you can't borrow: that spot in BeamNG is already taken. The author ships updates daily, and the community, Discord, and multiplayer servers all sit with him. Building a "BeamNG Earth" now would just make you a second EarthNG. Growth is also slowing, from 814 a week down to 263, and the first wave of videos has passed.

What you can borrow is the whole playbook, applied to a different game:

1. **The spectacle has to be explainable in one sentence, and people have wanted it for a long time.** Start by looking in the target game's mod library and on Reddit for things that are rough but have high download counts. That's demand that's been validated but poorly served.

2. **The data is ready-made; the work is what AI can do.** Elevation, imagery, road networks, and buildings are all open data. The hard part is stitching them into a game engine, streaming them, and tuning until they look good. This is exactly where AI-written code can compress three weeks into something one person can finish (inference: without AI, one person writing this in three weeks is unlikely).

3. **Ship in the week of the host game's major version, a new platform, or a big sale.** That's when creators are short on topics.

4. **Put the download on GitHub Releases.** Being an external program that can't enter the official mod library turns out to be an advantage: player traffic all lands on your repo.

5. **Make it easy for creators to film, and worth filming again and again.** One exe, random locations, landmark search, something new every week. Actively reply to creators' videos in the comments; the author's reply with 6,200 likes is itself an ad.

### If it were you

**B: worth trying. The playbook is clear, but it bets on the host game and on creators, and star conversion is low.** Don't touch BeamNG itself. Moving "drive the real Earth" to another game with a mod ecosystem and no good real-map mod yet is a project with a real chance at a thousand-plus stars.

- **Who it suits** : people who have played a simulation or sandbox game for years, understand its mod interfaces, can use tools like Claude or Codex to write a lot of code, and can ship updates daily for weeks. Ideally they already have a player Discord.

- **Who it doesn't suit** : anyone who wants to build a head-on competitor inside BeamNG (EarthNG's 85 stars are the result); anyone who doesn't play that game and just wants to "build an open-source project to collect stars" (players can tell immediately); anyone impatient with the messy GIS work (terrain seams, floating buildings, misaligned road networks, which is what all the bug reports are about).

- **How to do it** : start by picking a host. Candidates are Assetto Corsa (map2lap is already porting real roads, so move fast), truck simulators like Euro Truck Simulator and American Truck Simulator, Minecraft, and off-road and racing sandboxes. Polish one city or one famous highway first, then expand to the whole country and the world. Loosen the open-source license so the repo doubles as your download page, and put a "drive to my house" comparison screenshot on the first screen of the README.

- **How to get users** : post the public beta in the target game's subreddits, and in the same week DM the download link to 5–10 small creators with 20–30k subscribers who specialize in mods (this tier, not the big channels, is what drove volume this time). After a creator's video goes up, reply in the comments and pin the Discord link. Prepare a second wave for Russian, Italian, and Spanish-speaking audiences; multilingual relay accounted for much of the view count this time.

- **When to do it: before** : check the host game's release calendar and ship a playable beta before the next major update or new platform launch. The real-Earth-in-games wave only started in October 2026, and it's likely most mainstream simulation games will have someone doing it within six months, so whoever gets there first takes the creators.

- **What signals you've misread it** : ① BeamNG or any game publisher releases an official real-Earth map, or the imagery data sources start restricting this use, and this path narrows across the board; ② map2lap or other porting projects fail to reach a few hundred stars within three months, meaning this worked because of BeamNG specifically and that week's timing, and switching games won't work; ③ conversely, if a similar project for a truck or racing game reaches a thousand stars without big creators, the idea is more worth pursuing than you thought, and you can scale it up a tier.

## Why BeamNG.Earth (TecnaGamer/BeamNG.Earth) took off

> Channel: GitHub. Research date 2026-11-06. Data from the GitHub API, our github / hackernews libraries, YouTube Data API, TikHub, and Jina / Exa search. Reddit pages were blocked (403 / CAPTCHA), so the Reddit section only reflects search snippets.

### One line

BeamNG.Earth is a mod for BeamNG.drive (a soft-body driving game). It runs a Python world server alongside the game and streams real elevation, satellite and aerial imagery, OSM roads, and buildings into the game at 1:1 scale, so you can drive anywhere on Earth. It took off because three things came together: **a whole-Earth-drivable effect that can be turned into a video in one sentence** , **BeamNG's 0.40 plus the PS5 launch landing in the same week, when attention on the game itself peaked** , and **mid-size YouTube creators making videos on their own and sending viewers straight to the GitHub Releases page** . The stars were a side effect of players clicking star while downloading the exe, not something the developer community was spreading.

### 1. Data

| Metric | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Repo created | 2026-10-10 | GitHub API |
| Public beta | 2026-10-16 posted to r/BeamNG | Repo docs/ROADMAP.md, verbatim: "Public beta since 2026-10-16 (posted on r/BeamNG)" |
| Star / Fork | 1,578 / 150 (data card, 11-06); GitHub API live as of today 1,698 / 158 | Data card, GitHub API |
| Star curve | 10-17 to 3 in 10-18 48 → 10-20 210 → 10-22 501 → 10-24 769 → 10-28 1,250 → 11-06 1,578; single-day peak +158 (10-22); last 7 days +263, first 7 days +814 | Data card daily |
| Release downloads | The 51 formal releases have about **290k downloads** in total (the v1.7.3-beta alone is 46k, v1.6.3 is 36k); there are also 210 dev builds | GitHub API releases,11-06 |
| Codebase size | As of 10-31: 113,217 lines of code, 380 files, 14 languages | OctoCounts |
| Issue | 340 open (data card) / 434 open (Exa scrape) | |
| Contributors | TecnaGamer has 1,765 commits, about 50 other community contributors, and a `claude` account | GitHub API contributors |
| Its place in the BeamNG ecosystem | Among all the repos in our GitHub library tagged BeamNG, it has the most stars, higher than BeamMP (the official multiplayer mod, 538) and BeamNGpy (401) | github library repo_profile |
| HN | Never charted | hackernews database |

Note: the 290k downloads include auto-updates and repeat downloads (the launcher prompts upgrades), so it isn't 290k people. Still, the scale means real players in the tens of thousands at least. The star count is clearly low for this project: players come to GitHub to grab the exe, and only a small slice stars it on the way.

### 2. Competitors

| Competitors | Form | Launched | Scale | How it differs from BeamNG.Earth |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| EarthNG(Alezx311/earthng) | Open-source BeamNG Lua mod + Python map generator | Repo created 2026-10-13; 10-14 first built all of Ukraine; 10-18 shipped the 0.4.0 native version | 85 stars; Daily Downforce covered it twice | Pre-generates map packs by country/region (the Ukraine pack is 2.96 GB); native mod, no external program needed. Not a seamless whole Earth, and no satellite imagery on the ground. The author posted on Reddit, “EarthNG Update and i need to say some things now,” saying they were “the first to do this,” clearly racing the other project. |
| MapNG(mapng.com,nikkiluzader/mapng) | Web tool that generates static BeamNG levels | 2025-11 | 79–97 stars; has YouTube recommendation videos | Does one area at a time; you install the export yourself. Works as a starting point for level editing. Not streamed, not the whole Earth. Spealer's video specifically says “I still like MapNG; as far as I know it doesn't use AI, it's one person's work.” |
| The Whole World 1:1 (Willfa, BeamNG's official mod library) | Static low-poly map | 2024-11-06 | 43,109 downloads, 19,906 subscribers, 5 rating | Low-poly, blurry textures, jittery; only good for flying planes. But it proved the “whole Earth” demand existed two years ago. |
| Street2Sim | Website that turns real roads into BeamNG / Assetto Corsa levels | Not verified | Not verified | Builds one road at a time, not the whole world |
| BeamNGTerrainGenerator, beamng-map-import-assistant | Open-source desktop tools | 2025-03 / 2026-03 | 14 / 0 star | Tools for map makers, not for players |
| Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 | big-company products | 2024 | A-tier | Streaming the whole Earth is already a proven format, but it's flight-only, with no BeamNG soft-body crash physics. VGTimes' tweet sells this mod on the idea that it can turn BeamNG into the new MSFS. |
| BeamNG official maps | The base game | — | — | All are hand-built fictional or small-area maps. The official game has no real Earth. |

**Takeaway** : in 2026 October, several approaches appeared at once (a Swiss Malcantone region map 10-12, EarthNG's Ukraine 10-14, EarthNG 0.4.0 10-18, BeamNG.Earth public beta 10-16). The demand and the timing were shared. BeamNG.Earth wins on being **the most seamless and complete** : a real whole Earth, satellite imagery draped over the ground, one exe, plus a long list of details (real weather, time, seasons, AI traffic, BeamMP multiplayer, highway signs, bridges and tunnels).

### 3. How users arrived

Timeline (the star curve against content publish dates):

1. **10-16 r/BeamNG public beta post** (ROADMAP wording). Search snippets also surface posts like “There's a 1:1 scale Earth map now,” “BeanNG.earth is insane!,” and “wanted to test the limits on what BeamNG.earth can do” (the original posts were blocked; upvote counts unverified). 10-17 had only 3 stars, which suggests the Reddit posts themselves brought in few stars.

2. **10-18 Spealer, “You Can Drive Around the ENTIRE EARTH in BeamNG!”** : 499k views, channel only 27.6k subscribers, so the topic itself spread. The description links straight to the GitHub releases download. Stars climbed to 48 that day.

3. **10-19 Gaming with Griff Griffin, “BeamNG.drive has a 1:1 scale Earth map now”** : 1.55M views, channel 111k subscribers, and the description also links to the GitHub releases. Stars went to 10-20 and peaked at 210,10-22 with +158 in a single day.

4. **Spread to other languages from 10-21** : coolkidfrmbx 244k (10-21), ARSIKKK in Russian 392k (10-24), Pop News Russian short video 1.55M (10-26), NU89 Italian 286k (10-26), DESTIMAGE Russian 240k (10-26), Goosiest 178k (11-02), KirkAlef livestream 557k (11-01), Bulkin (Russian, 5.02M subscribers) 515k (11-04), MuYe (1.28M subscribers) “BeamNG's Earth Mod Is Insane” 427k (11-05, the author replied in the comments).

5. **Media and X** : VGTimes 10-26 posted on X, "The ENTIRE Earth has been recreated in BeamNG at a 1:1 scale". Daily Downforce covered the rival EarthNG. Our x-radar corpus has no related tweets in the past 30 days, so X is not the main channel.

6. **TikTok** : there are reposted clips, e.g. fbclips04 "1.1 scale earth map in BeamNg.drive!"258K views, xpectro99 "F1 How long does it take to drive from Madrid to Barcelona"1.73M views (going by the titles, these look like they were made with this mod; not verified).

7. **Community retention** : the README and every release send people to the author's own TGForever Discord (discord.gg/tgf, now 5,599 members, 1,368 online), in the #beamng-earth channel for posting multiplayer server IPs and reporting bugs. The GitHub issue templates collect suggestions (400 issues open). There's also a Ko-fi donation link.

8. **Fan sites / SEO** : two third-party sites already rank for “BeamNG Earth”: beamng.earth (“independent fan website,” mirrors releases and teaches downloading) and beamngearth.com (“Independent field documentation”).

No evidence of paid acquisition, ads, or influencer deals turned up. It looks organic.

### 4. Why it took off

- **An effect you can explain in one sentence is built for video:** "Drive the whole Earth 1:1" plus BeamNG crash physics (Spealer throws a car off Everest), and the title sells itself. Small channels (27K subs) still pull close to 500K views.

- **Timing** : BeamNG 0.40 graphics overhaul (official video 10-19) and the PS5 release (PlayStation announcement trailer 10-19) landed the same week, so BeamNG videos were everywhere that stretch, many with millions of views. BeamNG.Earth 10-16 opened public beta right into that wave. (PS5 players can't use this PC-side mod; they're feeding the overall attention.)

- **The demand was already validated** : Willfa's rough “whole world 1:1” from 2024 years ago had 43k downloads and nearly 20k subscribers, and comments kept asking for “Earth before GTA.”

- **Shipping very fast, with AI writing code** : commit messages frequently carry `Co-Authored-By: Claude` (about 1,827 commits when searching for claude), with 3 weeks producing 110k lines of code, 51 formal releases, and 210 dev builds, updating almost every day. Player feedback (AI traffic driving the wrong way, bridges, signs) got fixed within days, and the video creators always had something new to film.

- **Distribution through GitHub Releases, one exe to install** : the mod runs an external server alongside the game, so it isn't a normal zip mod. It wasn't put in BeamNG's official mod library; the download entry point is GitHub. The creators' descriptions all point to GitHub releases, and **that is the direct reason it picked up stars on GitHub** . Similar mods (like Willfa's) are published on beamng.com, so they got no GitHub stars.

- **Community participation** : about 50 external contributors (highway signs, golf courses, dirt-road potholes were all PR contributions). The author credits each one by name in the README, creating a positive loop.

### 5. Differentiation

Compared with “real map” approaches like EarthNG and MapNG, its difference is: **a real whole Earth with seamless streaming (floating origin plus LOD, the horizon always visible, Earth's curvature), satellite / aerial imagery on the ground, one exe** , plus a long layer of “real world” features (real weather, time, and starry sky, seasons, AI traffic, BeamMP multiplayer). This is the main reason it took off: in videos you can see at a glance that it's more complete than the rival, so creators chose it. The costs are needing an external program, needing an internet connection, and heavy configuration. Some people on Reddit complain about odd water on the ground and missing building blocks. Also, “written by AI” is controversial in the player community (Spealer's stance), but it didn't stop growth.

### 6. How visible it is

It's spreading in niche circles: BeamNG players, YouTube, and TikTok have carried it widely (single videos reach about 1.55M views at most, many in the hundreds of thousands), and the gaming outlet VGTimes tweeted about it. But developer and tech circles (HN, big tech accounts on X) have barely mentioned it. There's no revenue involved, only Ko-fi donations.

### 7. Copycats

- EarthNG (starting almost at the same time, so not exactly a copycat; it's a direct rival, and the author publicly stated they were racing to be “first”).

- zabooz/map2lap (2026-10-30): openly “built on BeamNG.Earth,” a world generator that brings real roads into Assetto Corsa.

- Fan / SEO sites beamng.earth and beamngearth.com.

### 8. What to borrow

- Find a **“one-line spectacle” everyone wants but nobody has done well** (here, “drive across the real Earth in a video game”), then assemble it with open data (Copernicus, Sentinel-2, OSM, Overture, national orthophotos) plus AI-written code.

- Launch the release in the week of a host platform's major update or new platform launch, riding the category's traffic.

- Make it easy for creators to film: one exe, a random-location button, landmark search, frequent updates, so creators always have new content to show.

- Use GitHub Releases as the download site and turn players into stars along the way. Discord handles community and multiplayer servers, issue templates collect requests, and crediting contributors by name brings in PRs.

- The same playbook can move to other games (someone has already ported it to Assetto Corsa), flight or truck sims, even Minecraft.

### 9. Uncertain

- The Reddit original post's upvotes and comments (blocked).

- How many of the 290k downloads are real players.

- Whether the TGForever Discord was already an existing community or grew because of this mod (the author registered on GitHub 2017 years ago, other repos have single-digit stars, and the Discord uses the vanity link /tgf).

- Follow-ups: growth has already slowed from 814 per week to 263 per week. It's unclear whether BeamNG's official side will step in (absorb or restrict it), and whether the imagery data sources (API licensing and cost) can sustain it.
