UniXNU/UniXNU · UniXNU

The person who got iPadOS running on a Xiaomi Pad built what is essentially "OpenCore for ARM": UniXNU earned 18 days and 2,000 stars, while the 294 repos that ported it alongside are almost all still unstarred

What it is An open-source bootloader and driver framework that runs Apple's stock iPadOS / iOS / macOS directly on the Snapdragon chips in Xiaomi, OnePlus and other Android phones. It's not an emulator.

Why it blew up In mid-October, "run iOS on Android" was hot. It was the first to get GPU hardware acceleration working, its code is fully open, and it swore it would never take donations. It also built itself as a general-purpose framework, so the ports for hundreds of device models all fork it and link back, and the stars keep flowing here.

CHow you could follow it Don't go head-to-head in this category: the framework spot is taken, and ported repos won't get stars. Copy the playbook instead: in the next tech wave, while everyone is still shipping standalone demos, solve the hardest piece first, then turn it into a base with a public master list.

Grade C: the technical barrier is the kernel and GPU drivers. The framework slot is already taken by the project, it got mainstream tech press coverage the week the repo launched, and ports that followed show 294 repos, one of which has 171 0 stars, plus Apple DMCA risk. The lesson from the craze is the 'build the foundation' play, but copying it directly isn't worth it. Whispers in the small circles

UniXNU is an open-source project that runs Apple's stock iPadOS / iOS / macOS directly on Android chips, with no emulator. The repo went up in Oct 19, catching the middle of the "Android running iOS" wave. It hit 2,047 stars and 331 forks (GitHub, 11-06) within 18 days, and the second week grew faster than the first. It won on two things: being the first to get GPU hardware acceleration working, and turning itself into the framework everyone porting shares. But the other half of this story is that the hundreds of people who used it to port iOS to their own phones mostly got no stars.

A tweet saying "no donations, just give us a like"

On Oct 19 2026, at 5:46 PM Beijing time, the X account @sharky_dev posted a tweet with a one-line title: "iPadOS 17 on Xiaomi Pad 6S Pro". The bio read "aka rpone / 18yo". An hour later, the UniXNU organization on GitHub created the main repo and a device repo for the Xiaomi Pad 6S Pro.

The project's Telegram channel, message #5, said:

Unlike HackiOS, we don't and will never accept any donations. UniXNU gonna be open sourced and free forever. If you would like to support us, simply leave a like.

—Unlike HackiOS, we don't take and never will take donations. UniXNU stays open source and free. If you want to support us, just give a like.

This line was aimed at another project from the same week. In mid-October, HackiOS posted several videos of "iOS running on a Poco X5 Pro", released no code at first, and opened donations. Media covering it had to add "unverified". UniXNU did the reverse: it released the code, docs, and flashing commands first, then published demo videos.

What it actually built

In one sentence: it brought the hackintosh approach of a "universal bootloader + device-specific driver loading" (called OpenCore on x86) over to ARM Android phones.

  • The system image is Apple's unmodified stock iPadOS 17.7.11 (the build for the 2017-model 12.9-inch iPad Pro).
  • The XNU kernel is patched to use 4K memory pages (Apple uses 16K; Snapdragon platforms use 4K).
  • Boot uses the UEFI from the open-source project Mu-Silicium, which was originally used to flash Windows and Linux onto Android phones.
  • The key is the GPU: Metal calls from the app get translated into Vulkan, compiled by Turnip, the open-source Adreno driver, and then run on the Adreno 740 in the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 through its own kernel driver.

English tech site pbxscience 10-20 posted a status table: screen, touch, storage and GPU work; Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, sound, camera, USB, sensors, battery and sleep do not. A cold boot spends over 40 seconds just compiling UI shaders. In other words, it's a prototype that boots, responds to taps and runs a smooth UI, not a usable iPad.

But among its same-week peers, this one stands out. ios-sweet (10-14 open source, running iOS 16 on a Redmi Note 10 Pro) that kicked off the wave used CPU software rendering and got only 20–30 fps. HackiOS didn't even have code yet. UniXNU posted a Bilibili video on the day after its repo went up, titled "GPU driver complete" (50k views). After that, nearly every write-up framed "native Metal acceleration" as what set it apart.

(GitHub daily stars, 11-06)

The first wave was hype plus content. 10-16 B站 video "Xiaomi phone runs iOS 16! Not an emulator" with 225K views, and the whole Chinese flashing community started hunting for "what other machine can we cram iOS onto," so UniXNU's "tablet + big screen + GPU acceleration" version landed right on time. The Xiaomi Pad 6S Pro was already built to rival the iPad Pro, so the visuals alone got attention. 10-22 On the peak day, @jaywcjlove on X (who runs Awesome Mac) posted a single line: "UniXNU - iOS and macOS running on Xiaomi Pad 6S Pro," with 11K views and 245 likes (X, 11-06 reads). A practical reply underneath: "The repo only supports the Xiaomi Pad 6S Pro for now... best for people who already own this tablet and love tinkering."

The second wave is the framework. From day one it doesn't treat itself as a single port: the main repo holds tools and patches, the SoC repo holds the shared chip code, each device repo handles its own model, and there's a porting doc plus a public device table. 11-01 When HKEPC reported it, the line was "114 branches, supporting 63 common Android devices in total"; by 11-05, the unixnu.com device table already listed 265 entries, from Xiaomi 13, Redmi K40 and OnePlus 6 to the Samsung Note10+, Lenovo Legion tablets and BBK learning tablets. 10-31 German outlet teltarif covered a Chinese developer who got iOS 17 running on a Redmi K90 Pro Max, with UniXNU in the headline. Every port forks the main repo and links back to it in its README. That's why this wave grew more in its second week than its first, while ios-sweet and Snapintosh cooled off within a week.

The fork-to-star ratio is 16%, while similarly aged new projects sit around 11%. The extra forks are people who forked it to port to their own device.

There is also a background factor: many of the ports in this wave were built by hobbyists with AI help. UniXNU's contributor list includes @claude, and the repo has an AGENTS.md written for AI tools. TMTPost summed up the whole wave as "humans hit the power button, Claude types the commands". Lower the bar and more people join, and the framework becomes their entry point.

What the people porting with it got

This is the section anyone thinking of following this path should read first.

11-06 searched GitHub for repos with UniXNU in the name and found 294 in total. Sorted by stars:

Repostars
UniXNU/UniXNU (main repo)2,072
UniXNU/UniXNU-sheng (official Xiaomi Pad 6S Pro device repo)45
The top community port (Xiaomi Pad 5, nabu)19
Repos with 10+ stars (including the main repo)8
0 stars171

(GitHub search, 11-06)

Even the official device repo has only 45 stars. The Redmi K90 Pro Max port that got foreign press still credits UniXNU. Porting inside a framework gets you a phone that boots and some reputation in the scene, while the stars all flow to the framework itself.

Who it's competing with

ProjectLaunchedStars (11-06)How UniXNU differs
dipa-studio/ios-sweet10-141,276 / 809 forkThe source of this wave; single device, software rendering at 20~30 fps, now +16~22 per day
HackiOSDemo about 10-16, code 10-22408Videos first, donations taken, code released later; made Hacker News (537 points), stars have stopped rising
Snapintosh10-221,173Running macOS 27 in a virtual machine on a Snapdragon X2 Elite laptop; lots of English-language coverage, then interest faded within a week
vphone-cli and derivatives2026-0216,521Virtualizes an iPhone on a Mac, with Apple hardware as the host
OpenCorePkg201915,622x86 hackintosh bootloader; UniXNU uses it as its positioning benchmark, but it does not support ARM

The only projects doing the same thing, native Apple systems on real non-Apple ARM hardware, are the ones that appeared in the same week as October. No older rivals. UniXNU is the only one that made itself a framework, and the only one still accelerating.

If it were you

C: Copy its approach of "building the base" during a wave, but don't go head-on in this category. The technical bar is kernel patches plus a GPU driver, so few can do it. Its place as the framework is already taken, and hundreds of port repos are feeding it stars. It reached TMTPost, 36kr, and foreign media in the week it launched, so it is no longer a small-circle secret. On top of that, it sits on the edge of Apple's license terms, and one DMCA notice could freeze the whole category.

Who it suits: system developers who already know kernels, drivers, and bootloaders and want to fill in what it lacks: Wi-Fi, audio, Bluetooth, battery. Note that this work will most likely be merged into UniXNU or credited under it, so what you get is reputation and a track record, not stars on your own repo. The more useful lesson is for a different type of person: someone who moves fast in any tech wave, is willing to write docs, and can gather scattered results into one place.

Who it doesn't suit: people hoping to earn stars by "porting iOS to my phone model" (294 repos, 171 of them at 0 stars); people who want to build a new "iOS on Android framework" from scratch to compete for its position; people sensitive to legal risk.

How to do it: follow its structure and use it in the next wave, while it is just starting and everyone is still posting single-device demos (this time, the days from 10-14 to 10-19):

  1. Break through the hardest, most visual part first (for it, GPU acceleration) and film it as a short video;
  2. Find a benchmark everyone already understands ("OpenCore on ARM") and explain it in one sentence;
  3. Split into "main repo + shared layer + device plugin / device repos" from day one, with porting docs and a public master table, so every follower becomes an entry point to you;
  4. Write docs for AI tools (AGENTS.md), since many contributors now arrive with AI help;
  5. When a rival is controversial (takes money, withholds code), openly take the opposite stance.

How to get users: the main battleground in the hardcore Chinese community is Bilibili videos plus big X Chinese-language accounts, then relayed by outlets like TMTPost and 36kr. On the English side, Hacker News and Reddit. UniXNU got little mainstream English coverage this time. If your wave happens in the English world, one spot on the HN front page can equal a week of traffic.

When it's already too late: in UniXNU's category, the window has closed. The approach itself doesn't expire. The next time several people post single-device demos at once with no framework yet, that is the opening, and it usually lasts about a week.

Signs you've misread the situation: ① a single-device port repo reaches 500 stars before year-end, showing that porting alone can build a name and following is easier than C; ② someone starts a general framework that passes 1,000 stars within a month, showing the position isn't settled; ③ Apple files a DMCA and the main repo is taken down, showing this type of project doesn't last, which cuts the value of "learning from it" as well.

UniXNU/UniXNU: why it got 2000 stars in 18 days

Research date 2026-11-06. Data sources: our github database (repo_profile / repo_day, daily since 10-28), hackernews database, the GitHub repo page and unixnu.com, Bilibili APIs, and media and social pages (read via Jina / Exa). X local corpus (x-radar) returns no entries for UniXNU or related terms, so the X picture can only be judged from individual tweets we could read.

One line

UniXNU is an "OpenCore-style" UEFI bootloader + patched XNU kernel + driver directory + build toolchain that runs iPadOS / iOS / macOS natively (not an emulator, not a reskin) on non-Apple ARM64 Android devices. The first target device is the Xiaomi Pad 6S Pro (Snapdragon 8 Gen 2), running stock iPadOS 17.7.11 IPSW from iPad7,1. It entered on day three of the "run iOS on Android" wave in mid-October 2026, and stood out from single-device demos like HackiOS and ios-sweet on two points: the first to run GPU / Metal hardware acceleration, and fully open source with no donations ever. It then became a shared framework that everyone porting to new devices builds on. The community added 265 device port entries, and stars grew faster in week two than in week one.

There are no mature incumbents. UniXNU is the only one that positioned itself as a general-purpose framework rather than a port for one machine.

3. Growth tactics (where users come from)

  2. Bilibili videos posted by the team itself, plus third-party reposts (confirmed): core developer bluseliu50's three videos drew 35k, 50k and 11k views; Zhiyu Qianshao reposted one with 58k; Xinqidian curtain's "Xiaomi Pad 6S Pro successfully flashed iPadOS 17" got 111k views (Bilibili API, read via 11-06).
  3. Chinese big accounts on X reposting it (confirmed): sharky_dev (self-described as rpone, age 18, matches contributor rponeawa) posted it first on 10-19; 小弟调调 (@jaywcjlove, author of Awesome Mac) reposted it 10-22, the same day as the star peak at +249; the English-language Techjunkie_Aman also reposted it that day. Exact engagement numbers unavailable.
  4. Media coverage (confirmed): TMTPost / Huxiu / 36kr / Tencent News (10-21, covering the whole wave and naming UniXNU), kocpc (10-23), cpunews (10-25), a CSDN teardown article (10-25), HKEPC (11-01), teltarif (10-31, in German), pbxscience (English), and a Baidu Baike entry. English mainstream tech outlets (Android Authority, GIGAZINE) covered ios-sweet and HackiOS, not UniXNU.
  5. Reddit (partly confirmed): r/hackintosh "Mi Pad running iPadOS 17" and r/jailbreak both have posts; vote counts unavailable (403).
  6. Community groups: Telegram @unixnu (about 232 subscribers) and a QQ group; both entry points are on the README's first screen.
  7. Self-growth from platformization (confirmed, the main driver of the second wave): unixnu.com/devices lists 265 device entries from about 239 different GitHub accounts (8550 SM56 devices, 8250 SM36 devices, …; 79 with port records). Every porter has to clone / fork the main repo, and the README and docs consistently point to the main repo. Coverage of the Redmi K90 Pro Max "Hongguo phone" ran on Ifeng, Baijiahao and teltarif, and these reports credited UniXNU.
  8. No paid ads, no charging, and no signs of star-buying.

4. Why it charted

  • First to ship GPU hardware acceleration: the contemporaneous ios-sweet was software-rendered at 20~30fps, HackiOS had no code, and UniXNU released a native Metal driver for Adreno 740 the next day (the Bilibili "GPU driver done" video got 50k views). kocpc and pbxscience both pointed to this as the fundamental difference between it and the rest.
  • Fully open source + public pledge to never accept donations, which directly answers the criticism HackiOS drew early on for "only posting videos, taking money, and not releasing code," and earned it trust points.
  • Good choice of hardware: the Xiaomi Pad 6S Pro is a large-screen tablet pitched as "an iPad Pro competitor," and "why should your next iPad be an iPad" is very shareable; iPadOS looks better on a tablet than iOS does on a phone.
  • Built a framework, not just one machine: it calls itself "OpenCore for ARM" and splits the work into three layers: a main repo (tools, components, patches), a shared SoC repo, and device repos. It also ships porting docs, a migration guide, and a device master list, so community ports all flow back to it. This is why it grew faster in week two than week one (830 vs 523), and the reverse of why ios-sweet and Snapintosh cooled off within a week.
  • AI lowered the porting barrier, so more people joined in: among the contributors is @claude, and AGENTS.md points to docs. TechNews summed up the wave as "humans press the power button, Claude types the commands." Hundreds of ordinary hobbyists can use AI to port iOS to their own models, and the framework is their entry point.
  • The existing Chinese flashing community: Xiaomi, Redmi, and OnePlus models have a large base of users who have unlocked their bootloaders, plus Bilibili, Coolapk, and QQ groups. The Chinese community is its home turf.

5. Differentiation, and whether it's the reason it took off

The differentiation has two layers: (1) technically, it was the first to deliver usable GPU / Metal acceleration, and the system image uses an unmodified stock IPSW; (2) positioning-wise, it builds a "universal UEFI boot + driver loading framework," not a single-device port. The first layer is why it won out over several peers in week one (the peaks all came after the GPU video), and the second is why it kept accelerating in week two and became the de facto standard for the category. Both layers are the direct reasons it took off. As for the "no donations" and "fully open source" that set it apart from HackiOS, they added trust.

6. Visibility

It's spreading within small circles, and those circles are growing: Chinese flashing communities, the Hackintosh scene (Bilibili, LIHKG, TG, X's Chinese-language community), and tech media in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Germany have all covered it, and it now has a Baidu Baike entry. English mainstream media and HN mostly discussed HackiOS, ios-sweet, and Snapintosh. The project makes no money, so revenue doesn't apply.

7. Copycats

No other "universal framework" has appeared to copy it. The single-device peers (ios-sweet and its fork ios-topaz, HackiOS, Snapintosh) emerged in parallel the same week, so they don't count as copycats. Hundreds of device-port repos sit under the UniXNU name and are part of its ecosystem.

8. What others can borrow

  • Build the "framework / foundation" rather than "another demo" during a wave: absorb other people's scattered work into reusable components, then pair it with a public device master list so that every follower becomes a traffic source for you.
  • Position against a benchmark ("like OpenCore"), which makes it explainable in one sentence.
  • Crack the hardest and most visual piece first (GPU), then back it with short Bilibili videos to build technical credibility.
  • When a competitor is controversial (taking donations, not open source), take a clear public stance against it.
  • Write AGENTS.md / docs for AI readers to lower the contribution barrier, so AI-driven hobbyist porters can plug in.

9. Still unclear

  • Specific X and Reddit engagement numbers (not accessible); x-radar's local corpus doesn't include related tweets.
  • How much the hottest news item, the Redmi K90 Pro Max story, drove stars to UniXNU (teltarif says it was based on UniXNU, while domestic coverage mostly named only the blogger).
  • Most entries in the device master list are "Device notes / Record pending." How many of the ports that actually work were not verified.
  • Legal risk: involves Apple's EULA and proprietary firmware. The project doesn't distribute Apple binaries, but a DMCA takedown from Apple is possible, and that will determine how long it lives.
  • Core team identities: sharky_dev (rpone, 18 years old, @hypitai) and bluseliu50; backgrounds not further verified.
