A reel with 2.17M views brought in 718 stars: claude-video-effects' stars came from Instagram

What it is A Claude Code plugin. Drag a talking-head video into Claude, type "/effects effect-name + time or line," and it automatically adds face-tracking Instagram-style effects that sit behind your head. There are 51 effects in total.

Why it took off The author is an Instagram creator with 70k followers. In Oct 25, a reel demoing the effects hit 2.17M views and 59k comments asking for the link. Trial reels followed almost daily after that. The GitHub stars are just the part of this funnel that trickled down.

CHow you could follow it Stop making English talking-head effect packs. If you have a short-video account of your own, switch to Chinese / Douyin / Xiaohongshu-style content, or to product sales or screen-recording material, and build a free skill. Promote it with a video that shows one original clip with N effects and asks viewers to comment for the link.

Grade C: the stars come almost entirely from the author's own Instagram distribution, and followers can't get that. The effects themselves are easy to copy. Lookalikes already exist and have only dozens of stars. The playbook is worth studying, but copying it directly isn't worth the effort. Chatter in small circles

Vibha makes "AI video editing" content on Instagram. She packaged the talking-head effects from her own reels into a free Claude Code skill, which got 718 stars and 176 forks on GitHub within 15 days. Almost none of the stars grew on GitHub organically. First came a reel with 2.17M views and a caption saying "comment CLAUDE and I'll DM you the repo." Trial reels then kept pouring traffic in almost every day. The repo is just the entry point for her paid editing studio. Anyone trying to earn stars with a "Claude video editing" topic should first ask whether they have a channel like this.

The reel from Oct 25

In 2026 Oct 22, Vibha Ramprakash, who runs the Instagram account @vibha.in.progress, created the claude-video-effects repo. She had about 30k followers at the time, having built her audience on "let Claude help me do X" content. Earlier she had used the same "comment to get the material" approach for an AI job-hunting guide. On the day she created the repo, she posted a reel: "Comment EFFECTS and I'll send you 22 effects, or just git clone," which got 30k views.

Three days later, in Oct 25, she posted: "One original clip, 7 edits, each one a single /effects command. Comment CLAUDE and I'll send you the repo." The visual was the same talking-head clip, with a different effect layered on each time. It reached 2.17M views, 43k likes, and 59k comments (Instagram, 11-06). In a later reel she said this one brought in 1.88M views and 17,708 new follows. By Nov 6 she had 76,887 followers.

59k comments means tens of thousands of people left a comment asking for the link. Over the same period, GitHub stars rose by only a few hundred. The comment section was the main event, and GitHub got only the small trickle that spilled over.

What it is

A Claude Code skill. A single git clone installs it into ~/.claude/skills/effects. The README even says: "If you're stuck, paste this line into Claude and let it install it for you." To use it, drag a vertical talking-head video into Claude and type:

`` /effects orbit from 3 to 6 seconds /effects spotlight when I say "kill the lights" ``

It renders yourvideo_effects.mp4 and leaves the original audio untouched. On the first run, Claude installs ffmpeg and Python by itself.

There are 51 effects in total (22 → 36 → 42 → 45 → 51, with more added alongside the reels). They're all the "behind-the-head" type that Instagram knowledge creators use: your reels spinning around your head, a big word landing behind the person, an Instagram comment box typing by itself, the Follow button flipping to Following, tier lists, magazine covers, and liquid-glass charts. Technically it uses OpenCV face tracking with MediaPipe person segmentation, and any element that would block the face is automatically placed behind the person. You specify timestamps in plain language ("when I say xxx") and never touch a timeline, which is what sets it apart from CapCut and Jianying templates.

The README is candid about it: these are "starter versions" with no sound effects or subtitles. The full styles are in the paid studio.

Data: GitHub daily star counts (from 10-27); Instagram plays and comments, 11-06.

Three things are worth watching.

The demo is the ad. The reels show the same source clip with N effects applied, before and after. The people watching are creators who want to make reels, which is exactly who would use the tool.

A trial-reel matrix. Nearly every day the same caption goes out as 2–6 versions, some explicitly marked "this is a trial reel". Instagram's trial reels feature shows them to non-followers first, and she keeps whichever ones take off. That's why the star curve doesn't spike and die: after 10-28 it climbs steadily at 30–50 a day.

Others are copying it for her. Indian creator Nishant Chahar posted his own "Comment EFFECTS and I'll send you the link"; a French creator wrote about it on Patreon; Portuguese sites and Chinese social posts ran "someone turned 45 talking-head effects into a Claude Skill". Forks and stars have reached 1:4, a high ratio, and many forks rewrote the description ("Original by @vibha.in.progress") and reposted it. The people using it are mostly creators who grab it and post right away, not developers who only star.

Almost nobody discusses it on X, it hasn't hit Hacker News, and it isn't on GitHub trending. Its home has always been Instagram.

Where the money is

It isn't on GitHub. Her Instagram bio links to vibha.is/ai-video-studio: "Hop Studio", an "AI video editing studio" with 220+ effects, 30 subtitle styles and 140+ sound effects, running on the Claude plan you already have. The page says "one-time purchase, not a subscription, price announced at launch"; leave your email to unlock "100 free effects"; a free live class on Nov 7 17:00 (Central European time) offers 50% off the studio to whoever attends; the page claims "1,000+ creators are waiting".

The order is: the free repo brings people in, the email list keeps them, and the live class adds an early-bird discount to close the sale. Stars aren't what she's after. Emails are. The studio hasn't opened for sales yet, and how much it sells is not visible from outside.

Who it's competing with

"Have Claude Code edit video" is one of the most crowded directions on GitHub in the second half of 2026, and by stars it only ranks mid-table.

Charlie Hills "20 Video Effects for Claude"10-20Author has about 110k IG followersTwo days earlier, same format, but the full pack sits behind a Substack paywall

Copycat repos with the same concept have already appeared: aaksa/facecammaxxing (10-26,22 stars), artemnovitckii/claude-editing-skills (10-29,49 stars), RoverEva/eva-video-style, YildizDikme/claude-video-edit. On Nov 5 Vibha said in a reel: "Then the copycats showed up, same format, every week."

Why it beats the same-concept repos

The effects themselves are easy to copy; the handful of same-concept repos with dozens of stars shows that. Where it's stronger:

  • It has a push behind it. A creator who knows content drives people in with viral reels, comment DMs and daily trial reels. Without that, the rest of the repos can't earn stars.
  • Low enough barrier that non-coders can use it. One command, or just tell Claude to install it; dependencies install automatically; timestamps are specified in a single sentence. Jesse's version needs npm and only runs on Mac.
  • Completely free, usable immediately. Charlie Hills's format came earlier, but requires a subscription first; for a "comment to get the link" funnel, a repo you can clone right away converts better.
  • Good timing. In autumn 2026, "Claude edits video" was the hottest topic in creator circles, and non-coding creators were already using Claude Code and the desktop app.

If it were you

Verdict: If you build a "Claude talking-head effects pack" yourself, you probably won't get stars; this repo's stars came from a creator with ~70k followers on Instagram pushing it, and followers usually don't have that. What to learn is the playbook: turn the step your audience wants most into a free skill, and promote it with short video.

Who it suits: creators with a growing short-video account (Instagram, TikTok, Douyin, Xiaohongshu all work) who already talk about AI tools; or developers who can partner with creators like that.

Who it doesn't suit: people who only write code and hope to grow stars organically on GitHB, HN and X. There are already many similar tools, the effects menu isn't much of a moat, and without distribution you're just the fifth same-concept repo with 22 stars.

How to do it: stop making English talking-head overlay effects and pick a space it hasn't touched. ① A Chinese version: effects styled for Douyin and Xiaohongshu talking-head videos (stylized captions, danmaku, price stickers, "key point" highlights), installed with "paste this sentence to Claude", supporting Windows; ② different footage: product livestream clips, unboxings, podcast clips, course screen recordings, none of which has a ready-made "one sentence, get effects" skill yet; ③ fill what it deliberately skipped: subtitles and sound effects. The free version has to produce a finished video, and the first screen of the README should show a before-and-after GIF.

How to get users: the video is the demo: same source clip, N effects, ending with "comment XX and I'll send you the link", with an auto-DM tool sending the link; the same caption goes out as several trial versions a day, keeping whichever one takes off. On the GitHub side, write a good README and topics, and let directory sites pick it up automatically.

Timing window: this kind of format gets copied by newcomers every week, and the English market is already crowded. The window for Chinese and other languages is probably one or two months (inferred), and once Claude Code spreads among Chinese creators, copycats will appear quickly.

What would prove this read wrong: ① a same-concept repo with no short-video promotion, only posted on GitHub and X, passes 500 stars in a month, meaning the developer crowd buys into this direction on its own and distribution matters less; ② this repo keeps gaining dozens of stars a day even after Vibha stops posting reels, meaning it has built organic GitHub traffic; ③ Anthropic or CapCut/Jianying builds "one sentence adds talking-head effects" into official features, which closes the free-skill path.

Data and sources: GitHub repo page and daily star counts (10-27 to 11-06); @vibha.in.progress Instagram profile and reels (plays and comment counts as seen on 11-06); vibha.is/ai-video-studio landing page (11-06); ReelStack and Reveneau 10-28 coverage; X @RoundtableSpace 10-28 repost; Charlie Hills Substack (10-20); skills.sh; GitHub pages of the competitors named in the text.

Vibha-Ramprakash/claude-video-effects: why it works

Research date 2026-11-06. Channel: GitHub. Data card: repo age 2026-10-22,15 days, 718 stars / 176 forks, last 7 days +377, single-day peak +105 (10-28).

Bottom line

It isn't an open-source project that grew out of a developer community. It's a lead magnet from an Instagram "AI video editing" creator with 77k followers (@vibha.in.progress). She packaged the on-screen effects from her viral reels into a free Claude Code skill, then used "comment CLAUDE and I'll DM you the repo" to turn a reel with 2.17M views into repo traffic, and funneled that traffic into an email list, a free Nov 7 masterclass, and a paid "AI Video Studio" (220+ effects, 50% off early bird). The stars are just the small slice of this funnel that leaks onto GitHub.

1. What it is

  • A Claude Code skill: git clone into ~/.claude/skills/effects, drag a vertical talking-head video into Claude, type /effects orbit from 3 to 6 seconds or /effects spotlight when I say "kill the lights", and it renders yourvideo_effects.mp4 with the original audio kept.
  • 51 effects (version history: 22 → 36 → 42 → 45 → 51, visible in reel captions, old descriptions left in forks, and trendshift records). Nearly all are the "behind-the-head layer" style common among Instagram educators: reels orbiting around the head, giant text sitting behind the person, comment boxes typing themselves, a flipping Follow button, iMessage pop-ups, tier lists, magazine covers, liquid-glass charts, and more.
  • Tech: OpenCV YuNet face tracking + MediaPipe person segmentation, so elements that cover the face go behind the subject automatically. Python + ffmpeg; on first run Claude installs the dependencies itself. The README is candid: "starter versions," with no sound effects or captions. The full styles live in the paid studio.

Bottom line: plenty of projects do the same thing, and on stars it ranks mid-pack among its peers (718 vs. HyperFrames' 79k and video-shotcraft's 17k). It got recalled because it's new and climbing fast, not because it's the strongest in the open-source scene.

3. Growth tactic: Instagram "comment keyword → DM the link" funnel (confirmed)

We pulled the author's recent reels via TikHub (user_id 59540111669). The timeline is very clear:

11-05DfXiGoEoC7P and others11k"This reel brought me 1.88M views and 17,708 follows, then the copycats showed up"

Breakdown:

  • The hook is the product demo itself. The reel is a before-and-after of "the same raw clip × 7 effects", so viewers see exactly what this repo produces. Claude video editing was itself a hot topic in autumn 2026.
  • Automated DMs triggered by comment keywords (ManyChat-style): 10-25's 59k comments show that tens of thousands of people actively asked for the link. Comment counts far exceed star counts. GitHub stars are only a narrow tail at the bottom of the funnel (installs via npx skills add on skills.sh are logged at only 38, www.skills.sh/vibha-ramprakash/claude-video-effects).
  • Instagram Trial Reels + multiple caption variants: almost every day she posts the same caption in 2–5 versions (for example, 11-03 had 6 posts saying "Comment CLASS"). Some captions say outright "This is a trial reel," using the platform's trial feature to test on non-followers and keeping whichever version performs.
  • Results she reported: 10-25's reel brought 1.88M views and 17,708 new follows. Followers grew from about 30k to 70k+ (per the author's 11-03 and 11-05 reel captions). Current IG count: 76,887 followers (TikHub, 2026-11-06).
  • Monetization: landing page www.vibha.is/ai-video-studio (linked from the IG profile): "AI Video Editing Studio," 220+ effects, 30 caption styles, 140+ sound effects. A free masterclass on 11-07 17:00 CET, with 50% off the studio for those who attend live. Signing up with an email unlocks "100 free effects." The page claims "1,000+ creators are waiting." The free repo only gives the "starter" version, and the full styles are reserved for paid. A classic lead magnet.

Secondary spread (the part that drove GitHub stars):

  • 10-28 (star single-day peak +105 that day): @RoundtableSpace reposted it on X, about 150 likes / 140 bookmarks. ReelStack wrote that same day about "a Claude Code skill that edits real footage" (https://thereelstack.com/lab/claude-code-skills-edit-real-footage-ffmpeg-skill-video-effects), citing the repo at about 270 stars. Reveneau covered it the same day (https://reveneau.com/ainews/claude-video-effects-skill-vibha-45-reels-250-stars).
  • Other creators reposting it: Nishant Chahar (@nishantchahar.ai) posted a reel "comment EFFECTS and I'll send you the link"; the French creator unefille.ia on Patreon (10-29); cauhi.com in Portuguese (11-02); Chinese X / Xiaohongshu-style posts "someone wrote 245 talking-head effects as a Claude Skill" (trendshift social mentions, 10-30); Higgsfield community and sellingwithnas tutorials.
  • Directory sites that auto-index it: trendshift, gittrend, skills.sh, claudeers, repolode, nomorevibe, ReelStack.
  • Our own X corpus (x-radar, last 30 days) returned no relevant tweets: X is not the home turf here, Instagram is.

4. Why it took off

  1. Distribution happens outside GitHub: the author is an Instagram creator who already grew by posting "Claude helps me build X" content (earlier playbooks like the "AI job-search system" had already proven comment-to-DM funnels; vibha.is cites 20k views / 500+ downloads). The repo is a new hook for a content machine that already works. The 2.17M-view reel was the starting point, and multiple test reels a day keep feeding traffic, so the star curve is not a one-time spike. It settles into a steady 40–50 new stars a day after 10-28.
  2. "Visible results" are naturally shareable as short video: the effect itself is the reel content, the demo is the ad, and the audience is creators who want to make reels, which is exactly who would use this tool.
  3. Lowered the barrier for non-programmers: a single git clone, or "paste this sentence to Claude and let it install itself"; ffmpeg and Python install automatically on first run; timestamps are described in plain language ("when I say 'watch'"), so no timeline knowledge is needed. Compared with JesseEisenbart's version, which needs npm/Remotion Studio and only runs on macOS, the entry bar is much lower.
  4. Timing: in autumn 2026, "Claude video editing" was one of the hottest topics in creator circles (HyperFrames +4,109 stars in 7 days; Remotion skills, video-shotcraft and others were also climbing). Claude desktop and Claude Code had reached non-technical creators, and a skill dropped into a folder just works.
  5. Fork/star ratio 25% is high: it looks like many people forked the repo, edited the description and redistributed it (sakouhi92-cell, juanda2222, Rixwanrajput, riteshkumarsingh1info-tech, danielquijano235 and others, each labeled "Original by @vibha.in.progress (MIT)"). It also suggests the audience is creators who use and share the tool, not just developers who star it.

5. Differentiation

  • Versus similar open-source projects: it focuses narrowly on "real-person talking-head overlay effects" and makes each effect a spoken command (/effects name + timestamp/line), with face tracking that auto-avoids the face. Most alternatives are either general motion frameworks (HyperFrames, Remotion), editing workflows (ffmpeg-skill, ghost-editor), or high-barrier (Remotion projects).
  • Versus Charlie Hills: nearly the same format, and Charlie posted two days earlier. The difference is that Vibha is fully free and gives the git clone command directly, while Charlie's full package sits behind a Substack paywall. For comment-driven funnels, "free and usable right now" converts better.
  • This is not the main reason it took off. The real driver is distribution: a content-savvy creator with 3–70k followers pushed traffic through a hit reel, comment-to-DM and a test-reel matrix. The effect itself is easy to copy (facecammaxxing, claude-editing-skills, Charlie Hills and others already offer similar ones), so the moat is shallow. The differentiation mostly serves to "make reels look good and demo well," not to make developers pick this one over others.

6. How visible it is

  • Circulating in niche circles: it has spread widely in Instagram's AI creator scene (2.17M views, a batch of re-posting creators), and small AI news sites such as ReelStack and Reveneau have covered it. But we found no major media or large X accounts (zero tweets in the x-radar corpus), and it has not hit GitHub trending because the repo is under 60 days old.
  • Revenue not disclosed; the author's paid studio is still in early-bird/waitlist stage (sales open after the 11-07 masterclass).
  • The author already says in a reel: "The copycats are here, the same format drops every week."

7. Copycats

  • Open-source projects that replicate the same concept: aaksa/facecammaxxing (10-26,22 stars), artemnovitckii/claude-editing-skills (10-29,49 stars, "behind the person"), RoverEva/eva-video-style (10-25), YildizDikme/claude-video-edit (11-02).
  • Renamed-and-republished forks: sakouhi92-cell, juanda2222, Rixwanrajput, riteshkumarsingh1info-tech, danielquijano235 and others (176 forks in total, some of them).
  • Same-format content: creators like Nishant Chahar re-post the reels; the author describes it as "Same format, every week."

8. What to borrow

  • "Open-source skill as lead magnet": turn the step the audience most wants in your content (here, the effects) into a free skill. The demo reel is the ad, comment keywords trigger a DM with the link, the link page collects emails, and then a live class plus early-bird discount sells the full version. Stars are not the goal; the email list is.
  • The free version is openly downgraded and says so ("starter versions, full styles in the studio"). That avoids looking like it's hiding something, and leaves room for the paid version.
  • Install instructions written for non-programmers: "paste this to Claude and let it install" is a strong pattern.
  • Test-reel matrix: the same hook in multiple variants, letting platform algorithms find the hit.
  • What this means for us: when a skill repo on GitHub shows "creator name + one-repo surge + high fork ratio," the growth source is most likely Instagram/TikTok. Check the author's short-video account, not X or HN.

9. Still unclear

  • The breakdown of where the stars came from (GitHub API rate-limited that day, so no stargazers or referrer data); how many forks are redistribution.
  • Paid studio pricing and actual sales; the "1,000+ creators waiting" figure is the author's own claim.
  • The specific tool behind the "Comment CLAUDE" auto-DM (presumably ManyChat-style, not verified).
  • Who first proposed the "one source clip, N slash-effects" format, Charlie or Vibha: Charlie's Substack came out two days earlier, Vibha says the format was inspired by @cindiezhu. The two may have influenced each other; not verified.
  • Whether paid ads were run: no evidence found (Meta Ad Library only tracks listed products).
