"9x less memory than the official app": a Rust Discord client that hit a thousand stars in two months
What it is A desktop Discord client written in Rust that doesn't use a web engine. It runs on all three desktop platforms, supports voice, video and screen sharing, and is not made by Discord.
Why it took off The README has a side-by-side test, "9x less memory than the official app," in the same scenario. Combined with posts in several open-source subreddits the same week, it picked up about 476 stars in six days. Then Discord's CTO said the official app would be rewritten in Rust and drop Electron. People searching for alternatives found this one was the only usable option, and star growth went back to over 50 a day.
CHow you could follow this Don't build another Discord client. Instead, take a bloated Electron app that people have complained about for years and build a native version that covers the core features. Put a same-scenario memory and CPU comparison on the first screen of the README, and post to several open-source subreddits the same week.

Serein is an unofficial native Discord desktop client written in Rust. The repo was created in 9 2026, and by Nov 6 it had about 1,016 stars and 87 forks. Its stars came in two bursts: one it generated itself on Reddit with a single comparison number, and one Discord's official move handed it. You can copy the first. The second is luck. And this niche is already getting crowded.
One tweet, and 57 more stars the next day
In Nov 4 2026, late at night (UTC 20:44), Discord CTO Stanislav Vishnevskiy replied on X: "We've been using Rust for 2018 years... the ultimate goal is to move the whole client over. That means Electron is going away, and so is React Native." He added: "Not Tauri, GPUI." The post later got over ten thousand likes and roughly 1.5M views. TweakTown covered it in Nov 5, and someone shared it on Hacker News.
"Rust-native Discord" went from nowhere to a searchable term overnight. The official version is still in beta, and the only one people can actually download and use as their daily driver is Serein. Trendshift logged its stars going up 24 on 11-04 and 57 on 11-05; on GitHub, 11-05 to 11-06 it jumped from 961 to 1,016. For over a month before that, it was gaining only 3 to 19 stars a day. In r/linux_gaming threads about the official news, one commenter said "Serein kind of pulled it off, it's just not polished yet"; on X, users in Japanese, Portuguese and Spanish are posting screenshots of themselves using it, 11-05 and 11-06.
But this is the second time. The first time, in September, it earned its own traction.
The first time: a memory comparison screenshot, 476 stars in six days
In the first three days after the repo was created (9-10 to 9-12), Serein gained zero stars; the team was merging PRs, and merged 129 in those three days. Then around Sep 13, they posted on several Reddit subs at once: r/SideProject, r/foss, r/opensourcealternative, all with the same title formula: "Native Rust Discord client, ~9x lower RAM usage, with voice, video and more features!"
Star gains over the next six days (Trendshift): 9-13 +55, 9-14 +180, 9-15 +93, 9-16 +53, 9-17 +59, 9-18 +36, roughly 476 in total. On 9-14 it entered the Trendshift Rust chart at #7, and never charted again. It never hit the HN front page or GitHub Trending (inference: the repo was too new). One of the founders posted on X, getting 2 likes and 110 views. So the launch ran almost entirely on Reddit.
The posts spread because of the table in the README. Same scenario: voice channel open on macOS, screen sharing at 60 fps, switching channels:
| Official client (Electron) | Serein | |
|---|---|---|
| RAM | 1,178.4 MB, split across 7 processes | 129.7 MB, one process |
| CPU | 22.8% | 8.1% |
Four system monitor screenshots follow. "Discord eats too much memory" is something PC and Linux users have complained about for years. Before, people only said "lightweight"; Serein gave them a number they could put in a headline.
Why so many native clients failed before, and why this one took off
A native Discord client is not a new idea. GitHub has dozens. Each one was missing something:
| Project | Approach | Stars | What's missing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vesktop | Electron reskin + plugins | 8,574 | Still a web engine |
| Dorion | Small system-webview shell | 2,712 | Rendering is still web |
| Swiftcord | Native macOS Swift | 2,756 | Mac only, no voice |
| Abaddon | C++/GTK3 native | 2,232 | Dated UI, no screen share |
| Dissent | Go/GTK4 native | 1,864 | No audio or video |
| discordo and others | Terminal TUI | 5,863 | No audio or video |
| Litecord | Native Rust, a month earlier than Serein | 71 | Didn't take off |
Serein claimed on launch that it ran on all three platforms, with voice and video (end-to-end encrypted), screen sharing, server management, and a plugin and theme store. It was the first to get to "usable as a daily driver." In two months it merged 518 PRs, its main developer committed 500 times or more, and the repo contains instruction files written for AI agents (inference: much of the code was AI-written). That pace is how a small team forced a category that "nobody uses unless it's feature-complete" to become usable.
Two smaller things also helped. First, install friction: in the first week there were Windows installers, a signed Mac build, Flatpak, and signed repos for apt/dnf/zypper/pacman. By Sep 18, someone had already submitted an AUR package, and in October a Homebrew formula followed. Second, it put the risk up front: the first paragraph of the README is a yellow warning box saying "Connecting to Discord with a regular account this way violates the Terms of Service and may get your account banned." The tech crowd respects that, and it made people more willing to switch.
Who it's competing with
Its biggest rival is Discord itself. Once the official Rust client ships (TweakTown says early Windows test builds used about 290MB), "9x less than the official app" stops being a selling point. The official announcement is sending Serein traffic right now, but in the long run it takes away the thing that made Serein stand out.
The copycats have arrived too. yapfast, started in Oct 16, is also Rust-native and advertises "30MB idle." It has a website, and by Nov 6 it had 187 stars, gaining 54 in one week. Cressida, written in C++, and one built on GPUI (riding the official "it's GPUI" line), and moss all appeared after October. Everyone is competing on whose memory number is smaller.
If it were you
The verdict: Building another native Discord client is not worth it. What's worth copying is the playbook: pick a bloated Electron app that people have complained about for years, build a native version that does enough, and launch on Reddit with a side-by-side number from the same test.
Who it suits: Developers who can write a desktop app in Rust, C++ or Swift and ship features fast with AI agents; people who are heavy users of some bloated desktop app and know exactly where it hurts.
Who it doesn't suit: Anyone wanting to build on the Discord line itself: four or five copycats appeared within two months, and the official client will take the selling point. Anyone who can't live with the gray area of "violates ToS, users may get banned." Anyone building only a demo: in this category, nobody uses it without hard features like audio and video.
How to do it: Pick a different app. Good candidates have lots of heavy users, an official desktop build that's a web shell, and either a workable protocol or a public API. (Slack, Teams, Spotify, and note-taking and chat tools are all worth checking for an existing mature native open-source version; inference.) Get the core features of the target working first, then release. Before launch, measure RAM and CPU on the same machine in the same scenario, and put the screenshot on the first screen of the README. Ship installers for every platform and package-manager channel at once. Put the ToS risk at the top.
How to get users: In the same week, post to r/SideProject, r/foss, r/opensourcealternative and the target app's user subreddits, with the multiplier in the title. Then watch what the big company does: the moment a major player says it will "rewrite the client" or "drop Electron," the project you already have out there is what people will search for.
How early you need to be: The playbook has no inherent window. But if you're betting on a company that is about to announce a native rewrite, you need to be shipping before that announcement. For Discord specifically, the window probably closes when the official Rust client goes public beta.
Signs you've misread this: ① After the official Rust client's public beta, Serein still gains 10+ stars a day. That would mean the differentiators (plugins, themes, zero telemetry) hold users on their own, and the Discord line isn't dead. ② The reverse: if a copycat like yapfast also hits thousands of stars within a month, this track has more traffic than expected, and latecomers can still win. ③ Discord starts broadly banning third-party client users or sending legal letters. Then the overall risk for projects that "build a native client for a big company" needs to be reassessed.

Serein (ViceVerse-cz/Serein): why it took off
An unofficial native Discord desktop client written in Rust with egui/wgpu. Roughly 1,016 stars and 87 forks in 2026-09-09,58 days since the repo was created (GitHub repo_profile, 2026-11-06).
Bottom line
Two spikes, with a long tail in between. The first came from the team posting on Reddit themselves (r/SideProject, r/foss, r/opensourcealternative) from September 13 to 18, picking up about 480 stars. The pitch was "9x less memory than the official Electron app," with a RAM/CPU comparison screenshot. The second came from November 4 to 6, when Discord CTO Stanislav Vishnevskiy publicly said the official client would be rewritten entirely in Rust with Electron removed (that tweet got 1.5M views). "Native Rust Discord" suddenly became news, people searched for it, and Serein was the one you could download right away. Daily stars climbed back to 50+. The "accelerating over the last 7 days" flag on the recall card is mostly this platform moment, not a growth push by the product itself.
1. Data: how the stars came in
Daily star counts come from Trendshift (https://trendshift.io/repositories/234457) and match our GitHub repo_day data from November onward:
- 9-10 to 9-12: 0 stars a day while the team quietly merged PRs (129 merged in three days).
- 9-13 +55, 9-14 +180, 9-15 +93, 9-16 +53, 9-17 +59, 9-18 +36: about 476 stars in 6 days. That's the launch burst. 9-14 made Trendshift's Rust chart at #7,9-15 and peaked at #19, and it hasn't charted since.
- 9-19 to 11-03: a long tail of 3–19 stars a day, about 400 stars over 45 days. gitnova recorded 9-25 as 570 stars; Hysen Labs recorded 9-21 as 551 stars.
- 11-04 +24, 11-05 +57, 11-06 +23 (Trendshift). In our database, 11-05→11-06 is 961→1016 (+55). gain_7d 122, prev_7d 58. The "accelerating" label on the card comes from those days.
- From 9-10 to 11-06 the team merged 518 PRs from 3 contributors (dfrnoch 517 commits, Atsukoro 1 260 commits, Undefined 3301 46 commits; data from GitHub pages scraped via Exa). The repo has AGENTS.md and other "three agent files" (Hysen Labs), which suggests heavy AI-agent involvement in development. That would explain how voice, video, screen sharing, server management, plugins, and a theme store piled up in two months.
- The suspect field in the GitHub DB is empty, and gitnova judged the "star growth looks organic." Both spikes line up with specific events, and there's no sign of star-buying.
2. Growth tactics (where users come from)
| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| Organic Reddit posts (multiple subreddits) | r/SideProject "I'm building Serein…" (1wf4gxg), two r/foss posts (1wf4o58 and 1wfedy6, Brave shows 2026-09-17), r/opensourcealternative (1wfjsio), and a second r/SideProject post (1wj84x1). Every title reads "~9x lower RAM usage, voice/video, and many more features!" The post IDs line up with the 9-13–9-18 burst. | Yes (the posts exist; exact dates and vote counts weren't scrapable from Reddit, so unverified) |
| Side-by-side testing against the official client in the README | Same scenario (voice connected, screen share at 60fps): official 1,178MB spread across 7 processes with 22.8% CPU; Serein 129.7MB and 8.1% CPU, with screenshots | Yes |
| Platform event: Discord officially announces a Rust rewrite | @svishnevskiy 2026-11-05 发推(11,430 赞、150 万浏览):"Electron goes away";TweakTown 11-05 报道;HN 11-04 有人转发(7 分)。r/linux_gaming 的讨论帖里有人说「Serein kind of does it for Discord, but it's still not mature」;X 上日语、葡语、西语用户 11-05/06 都说自己在用 Serein | Yes (timing matches the star growth from 11-04 to 06; causation is inferred) |
| Packaging and distribution channels (indirect) | Someone submitted an AUR package (9-18, nanoka, not the author); Gentoo overlay; self-hosted Flatpak remote and signed apt/dnf/zypper/pacman repos; Homebrew tap (10-16); Nix flake | Yes |
| Founder X | @atsukoro_vrc 9-21 post, 2 likes, 110 views | Yes, but it brought almost no traffic |
| Aggregator sites / SEO | Auto-generated pages on Trendshift, gitgem, hysenlabs, redecomp, alternativeto, shadowgraph, and others. A Facebook repost page: "Broski… they COOKED a lightweight native Discord client using Rust" | Yes (passive exposure, volume unknown) |
| HN | No Show HN or story for Serein in our data (the hackernews repo query came back empty) | Never charted |
| GitHub Trending | Repos under 60 days old can't make trending; in our data trending_days=0 | Couldn't have charted anyway |
3. Competitors
| Product | Form | Launched | Scale | How Serein differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Discord's official native Rust client | Big-company features | Announced by 2026-11, in internal testing (TweakTown says an early Windows build was 290MB) | All Discord users | Official and within ToS. Once it ships, Serein's "less memory" pitch largely goes away, but the announcement is what sent traffic to Serein. |
| Vesktop(Vencord) | Open source, Electron wrapper | 2023-03 | 8,574 stars | Still a web engine, leaning on plugins and better Linux support; not native |
| BetterDiscord / Vencord | Client mods | 2017 / 2022 | 9.3k stars and up | Modify the official client without swapping the engine |
| Legcord / WebCord / GoofCord | Electron wrapper | 2020–2023 | 3.5k / 2.5k / 1.0k stars | All web shells |
| Dorion | Tauri/webview shell | 2022-09 | 2,712 stars | Uses the system webview to cut size, but rendering is still web-based |
| Swiftcord / Paicord / SakuraCord | Native macOS Swift | 2022 / 2025 / 2026-07 | 2,756 / 350 / 154 stars | Mac only, few features (Swiftcord has no voice) |
| Dissent(gtkcord4) | Native, Go + GTK4 | 2022 | 1,864 stars | Native, but no voice or video |
| Abaddon | Native, C++ + GTK3 | 2020 | 2,232 stars | Native with voice, but the UI is dated and there's no screen sharing |
| discordo / concord / endcord | Terminal TUI | 2021 / 2026-05 / 2025 | 5,863 / 1,649 / 1,026 stars | Terminal client, no audio or video |
| Ripcord | Closed-source native Qt, paid | Around 2018 | Niche | Closed source, development stalled (latest status unverified) |
| Litecord(Ak4ai) | Native Rust | 2026-08-08 | 71 stars | Nearly identical positioning and launched a month before Serein, but never took off |
Bottom line: a native Discord client is not a new idea, and plenty of people have tried. But an open-source one that runs on all three desktop platforms, uses GPU rendering written in Rust, and has voice, video, and screen sharing (including DAVE end-to-end encryption) all working is something nothing before Serein offered.
4. Copycats
- yapfast/yapfast: created 2026-10-16, native Rust, advertised as "idle at about 30MB." 187 stars, gain_7d 54 (GitHub DB). It has a site at yapfast.com and a post on r/coolgithubprojects. The pitch is nearly the same as Serein's, just with a smaller memory number.
- Ly-sec/Cressida (native C++, 2026-10-17,24 stars); Trendshift also recommends a "Blazing-fast native discord client built with gpui" (26 stars), riding the news about the official GPUI; departin/moss (10-29).
- In other words, since September "native Discord client" has become a small niche, and each official announcement pulls more people into it.
5. Why this one took off
- Old pain point, strong comparison: "Discord eats too much memory" has been a complaint from PC and Linux users for years. Serein doesn't just say "lightweight." It backs the claim with measured numbers for the same scenario (9x memory, 2.8x CPU) plus screenshots, and the headline itself is easy to share.
- Feature-complete enough to use daily: earlier native clients lacked voice, video, or screen sharing, so they were toys. Serein claimed voice, DAVE E2EE, screen sharing, server management, plugins, and a theme store from launch, and it shipped 518 PRs in two months with heavy AI-agent use.
- Low install barrier: Win/Mac/Linux installers, a signed Mac build, Flatpak, signed repos for multiple distros, and Homebrew were all available in the first week. The AUR package was submitted by the community within a week.
- Leading with ToS risk up front, plus a threat model and a storage policy doc, makes it look credible, and the tech crowd shares that kind of thing.
- Rode a platform event: after November officially announced a Rust rewrite of Discord, "native Rust Discord" became a searchable topic, and Serein is currently the only mature, usable open-source version, so it caught that traffic naturally.
6. Differentiation
- Compared with Electron/webview reskins (Vesktop, Legcord, Dorion): it's truly native rendering, not a web page.
- Compared with other native/TUI clients (Dissent, Abaddon, Swiftcord, discordo): it works on all three platforms, has full voice, video and screen sharing, plus plugins (Wasmi sandbox) and a theme store.
- These differences are real reasons it took off, but what makes it spread is the single number "9x less memory". The moat is shallow: once the official Rust version ships, the memory advantage is gone; copycats like yapfast are already racing on who has the smaller memory figure. What will be left as differentiators are "free plugins and themes", "zero telemetry", and the ever-present risk of account bans.
7. What to borrow
- Launch playbook for open-source clients: use a head-to-head against the official client with measured numbers + screenshots as the title, post it in several Reddit communities (SideProject, foss, opensourcealternative) the same week, and get every platform's install channel in place before launch.
- Iterate fast with AI agents, taking a category where "it has to be feature-complete to be usable" to daily-driver quality quickly.
- When a big company announces it's entering an area, open-source projects that were already building alternatives get search traffic passively: claim "what the official product is about to do" in advance.
8. Still uncertain
- Specific Reddit post dates, vote counts and comments (scraping was blocked). Which starter thread was on 9-13 day, and in which subreddit, is unverified.
- Publication dates and traffic from the Facebook repost pages.
- Actual download counts and active users (GitHub Releases download numbers were not obtained; the API was rate-limited at the time).
- Whether Discord will ban accounts using Serein or send a legal letter, and how many users Serein can keep once the official Rust version ships.
- The repo was renamed from rustcord (Hysen Labs found download links pointing to ViceVerse-cz/rustcord). Whether there was earlier accumulation before 9-09 is unverified.
