video-shotcraft: turning "cinematic feel" into 124 cards, 110 days to 17k stars

What it is A product-promo video skill that installs into Claude Code / Codex: it captures real pages of your product, picks shots from 124 shot-recipe cards, renders with Remotion, syncs cuts to beats and adds sound effects, and outputs an editable MP4, with CapCut draft export too.

Why it took off People using agents to write code and make videos were only getting PowerPoint-style animations. It shipped on day one with a shot library and an online gallery where the gap was obvious at a glance. Chinese AI creators and English repost accounts amplified it, the author kept updating, and it rode the Opus 5.5 video wave and GitHub trending.

BHow you could follow Don't build another product-promo video skill. Take the method of "encode taste as recipe cards + a working demo + an online gallery" and apply it to content agents can make usable but ugly, like PPT, posters, landing pages, and data charts. Ship a complete finished product on day one, and launch in both Chinese and English together.

Grade B: the method is clear and copyable, and the author wasn't a big account at launch, showing it can take off without fame. But the product-promo video slot is already taken, big-name followers have stalled at a few thousand stars, and each model upgrade weakens the need for this kind of skill. Pivoting to a new direction means betting that a gap still exists. Publicly known / widely discussed

An AWS AI developer in China got fed up with the product promo videos Claude Code kept making, which looked "like a PPT." So he open-sourced the camera moves, transitions, beat-syncing, and sound effects as recipe cards an agent can follow. By Nov 6, it had 17,238 stars and 1,631 forks, and ranked #1 in its category. Below: what it is, why it's the one that took off, where the stars came from, who's following it, and how to start if you want a project that gets stars too.

The complaint that started it: "motion graphics are basically at PowerPoint-animation level"

On 2026 Jul 19, Vincent Wei (known on GitHub as Vincentwei1021, on X as @VincentWei93, bio reads AWS AI Applied Scientist) built this repo and shipped the first version the same day: 106 camera-motion cards, over a hundred motion previews, a promo video template that's been through acceptance, plus an online gallery. His launch post on X reads:

I was experimenting with the remotion plugin + Claude Code recently, and the video motion graphics were basically at PPT-animation level. No camera movement, no transitions, no sound effects... so I open-sourced this video-shotcraft skill.

The video attached is a promo made by the skill itself.

That line hit something everyone was living through. In January 2026, Remotion released official skills for agents; in March, HeyGen open-sourced HyperFrames; "have Claude Code write code to make videos" became a hot pattern. But the output all looked alike: fades, pans, zooms, cards flying around. The frameworks taught agents "how to write animation code" but not "what a good shot looks like."

What it actually does

The README's first line: tell Claude Code or Codex "make a promo video for my product," and the agent screenshots your real product pages, picks shots from the library, writes a storyboard, animates with Remotion, syncs cuts to background music, adds sound effects, checks frame by frame, and hands you an MP4 you can keep editing.

It stresses that it is not a video generation model: every frame is drawn by code from your own screenshots and copy, so the visuals are clear, on-brand, and editable, instead of a Sora-style interface that looks plausible but is fake.

The core asset is the shot recipe-card set, now 124 cards and 150 shots (in October he re-reviewed all 216 demos and kept only the best). Each card specifies how the shot moves, how long it holds, and which frame the sound enters, with a runnable demo source and an online preview. Beyond the MP4, outputs include the Remotion source, a CapCut-like browser editor (Motion Workbench, added in September), and drafts that import directly into CapCut Pro (added in August, with storyboard clips, subtitle tracks, and separate sound-effect and BGM tracks).

Install is one line: send the link to your agent and say "install this skill for me," or run npx skills add Vincentwei1021/video-shotcraft; there is an AtomGit mirror in China.

(GitHub stars; the 7 point in September comes from third-party articles, web archives, and the author's own statements; 9-07 to 11-06 per Trendshift shows +9,792 total, about 160 per day, with no single explosive day.)

The curve didn't come from one viral tweet. Several forces relayed each other, and it never stopped for 110 days.

Wave one: the Chinese AI community. After the author's own post, @sitinme posted a full tutorial thread in Jul 23, opening with "It isn't Sora or Runway, which generate video from a single sentence, and it isn't CapCut, PR, or AE, traditional editors. It's more like a product-video skill pack for coding agents," then covering installation, a recommended workflow, and pitfalls ("don't give just one prompt... otherwise the agent easily makes a fake interface that looks decent but doesn't resemble your product at all"). Tencent Cloud's developer community and Cnblogs reposted it, and within 9 days it reached 2,200 stars.

Wave two: English reposting accounts and aggregators. enterprisedna's AI Pulse (7-24), @Dinosn (7-25,4,467 views), daily.dev, Reddit r/BestGitHubRepos, @GithubProjects (9-06), @tom_doerr (10-07, +244 that day); Taiwanese Threads creators, Bilibili, and YouTube also ran introduction videos. Reposters needed no assets of their own: the "not PPT-like" shots in the gallery and the skill-made promo could be posted as is.

Wave three: the Opus 5.5 video wave. In late September Claude Opus 5.5 launched, X was "full of Opus 5.5 motion-graphics videos," and lists of "AI video-making skills" appeared. On Sep 27, GoSailGlobal counted 180 open-source libraries that let agents make video, with 26 in "product promotion and demo"; video-shotcraft was then first with 9.7k stars, and second place had only 445. The author used the moment to rewrite all shot components with Opus 5.5 and published 2.0.

Wave four: GitHub trending charts. Starting in Oct 9, it made the TypeScript daily, weekly, and monthly charts, and in early November it stayed in the weekly top five, so organic traffic kept coming.

The library also recruits its own users. SKILL.md suggests users @ the author on X, Douyin, or Xiaohongshu when they post videos; the community showcase submission form says you can list your account, "so people who see the work can find you"; the README is in Chinese, English, Japanese, and Russian; skills.sh and several skill directories index it automatically. The author later built video-talkcraft (2.1k stars, talking-head videos), anything2explainer (3.1k), and mg-styles-15 (3.1k), each a different video type on the same path, with the READMEs linking to one another.

What didn't happen: no sign of a Hacker News or Product Hunt listing, and no paid promotion. On X, the author is a mid-sized Chinese tech blogger, not a big account. That matters for anyone who wants to copy this.

A twist: the author himself said "consider uninstalling"

In Sep 25, the author posted:

If you're using Opus5.5, I'd suggest uninstalling all the skills that make video with code. This video was made from a single sentence with Opus5.5, and every part, including the BGM and sound-effect synthesis, was generated by code... On this front, Opus5.5 is a generational breakthrough.

A commenter agreed: "This time the output without any skill is even better than with one... It feels like the video skills I spent so long polishing became useless overnight with the new base model."

But after October its star growth actually accelerated, from around a hundred a day to a couple hundred, peaking above four hundred. A plausible explanation (inference): the video wave multiplied the number of people searching for "AI video" several times over, and newcomers looking for this kind of skill found it first. Fast star growth doesn't mean that many people are really using it.

An earlier Remotion + voiceover toolkitFrom ¥2025-12Tens to 2.4kEarlier, but without a systematic set of shot cards, gallery, or frame-by-frame checks
Opus 5.5 direct output2026-09—Produces motion videos in one sentence with no skill installed; the biggest long-term threat

Two things stand out. First, the "product promo skill" slot is already crowded: famous Chinese AI bloggers like Huashu and Guizang have built the same-positioned tools, and all of them stay under a few thousand stars. Second, the rivals with the most stars (HyperFrames, OpenMontage, brag) are frameworks or all-in-one systems, not the same kind of thing. None has caught up as a direct competitor to this one.

What it still gets wrong

  • Heavy to install. It needs Node, ffmpeg, and the full Remotion setup, and a video has to be rendered and beat-synced. It isn't "one click, done." How big the gap is between stars and people who have actually shipped videos with it, I can't tell.
  • Thin moat. The recipe cards are markdown plus React components, easy to copy. In September someone already said "this set of recipe cards has been adopted by several repos."
  • Models are catching up. The author admits Opus 5.5 does well without any skill. The value of the shot cards is shifting from "you can't make it without them" to "it's more reliable and controllable with them."
  • Product promos only. Talking-head, explainer, and e-commerce video types were split into other libraries by the author; this one doesn't cover them.

If it were you

One-line verdict: another "product promo skill" will probably not get stars, since this slot is taken, and later well-known names have only reached two or three thousand. What's worth doing is moving its method, "write aesthetic judgment as an asset library an agent can read," to another content type nobody has covered yet.

Who it suits: developers with real craft in a visual task (motion graphics, slides, posters, landing pages, data charts, e-commerce hero images) who can explain what separates good from bad, and who are willing to spend weeks breaking that difference into dozens or hundreds of reproducible recipes. No big account is required; this author was an ordinary Chinese blogger when he launched.

Who it doesn't suit: people hoping to package a few prompts as a skill and ride a trend; people without a finished piece that makes the gap obvious at a glance; people who only want to work on "AI video," an already crowded keyword.

How to do it:

  1. Pick an output type where agents currently produce something "usable but ugly." Candidates (inference, not checked one by one for overlap): slides / presentations, social posters and covers, landing-page hero sections, data visualization, App Store screenshots, e-commerce hero images.
  2. Shipped complete on day one: dozens of recipe cards, each with a working demo and an online preview, plus a verified finished template. Finish quality is what set it apart from the same-period "a few prompts + Remotion" toolkits.
  3. Build an online gallery. People can see the results without installing anything. It's shareable material and the front door of the README.
  4. Leave the output editable, and make it local: its CapCut (Jianying) export is the step Chinese users need most. For your niche, that could mean exporting to formats Keynote, Figma, or Canva can open.
  5. Or fill the gap it left: a lightweight version with no rendering environment that returns results in seconds, for the people scared off by Node + ffmpeg + Remotion.

How to get stars: Open the launch post with a complaint everyone relates to (his was that "motion design is basically at PowerPoint-animation level"), and attach a finished video the skill made itself. Post in both Chinese and English communities: Chinese first to build momentum, English README and skills.sh to catch overseas users. In SKILL.md and the showcase page, encourage users to @ you when they share their work. Treat every major version as a new release. Once stars build up, open a second and third library in the same series and cross-link them.

When to move: Now through early next year. The "agent writes code to make content" wave still has heat, but each model upgrade makes some skills redundant, so the window is measured in model versions, not calendar years.

Signs you're reading it wrong: The direction you picked already has projects with thousands of GitHub stars. Or your finished output looks no different from what the latest model produces when you skip the skill and ask directly. That would mean the model has already closed the "taste gap" in this direction, so switch. Also, if stars are still in the three digits two weeks after launch, the demo isn't making the difference obvious at a glance.

Why video-shotcraft (Vincentwei1021/video-shotcraft) took off

Research date 2026-11-06. Sources: our GitHub database (repo_profile / repo_snap / trending), the GitHub API, Trendshift, star-history, the original X posts (read via r.jina.ai), and Chinese tech community articles. The GitHub stargazers endpoint returned 404 for every repo this time, so daily star counts for July through August aren't available. For that stretch I used star counts cited in third-party articles.

Bottom line

This is a skill you install into Claude Code / Codex. Say "make a promo video for my product" and the agent screenshots your real pages, picks shots from 106→124 "shot recipe cards," writes a storyboard, renders with Remotion, syncs cuts to the BGM, adds sound effects, and delivers an MP4. It can also export a CapCut draft and an in-browser editor. It worked because three things stacked up. (1) It landed at the right time: in the first half of 2026, Remotion shipped official agent skills and HyperFrames also blew up. Everyone was trying "agent writes code to make video," and the results all looked like PowerPoint animation. The author showed something where the gap was obvious at a glance. (2) The deliverable was itself the share bait: a playable motion gallery wall plus a promo video the skill made itself. People could repost without making a video themselves. (3) Chinese AI KOLs and English GitHub repost accounts relayed it, and the author kept shipping features, writing a four-language README, and riding trending and the Opus 5.5 video wave. Stars went from 0 to 17.4k over 110 days and never stopped climbing.

3. Where users came from (by time)

  1. The author's own first post on X (in Chinese), with a promo video made using the skill: "I've been trying the remotion plugin + Claude Code recently, and the motion graphics were basically at PowerPoint-animation level. No camera movement, no transitions, no sound effects... so I open-sourced this video-shotcraft skill." View count not captured. (x.com/VincentWei93 profile)

  3. English reposter accounts and news sites: enterprisedna "AI Pulse" 07-24; @Dinosn 07-25 (4,467 views); daily.dev; Reddit r/BestGitHubRepos; @the_osps and @GithubProjects 09-06; @tom_doerr 10-07 (that day Trendshift +244, TS #12); LinkedIn, Threads (Taiwan's @sliven0722, @brianjhang), YouTube intro videos.
  4. Chinese tech media reposts: Tencent Cloud Developer Community 07-28 "2.2K Star! When AI learns to make films"; cnblogs; a second Tencent Cloud article 2760736.
  5. Opus 5.5 video wave (late September): "Every feed is full of Opus 5.5 motion-graphics videos." A batch of roundups and cheat sheets popped up (GoSailGlobal's 9-27 list, @gkxspace's "spoon-fed" guide, awesome-opus5-5-videos 13.7k), and they all named video-shotcraft as the go-to for "making a product promo video." The author rode the wave, rewrote every shot component with Opus 5.5, and shipped "video-shotcraft 2.0." Its star count picked up speed in October.
  6. GitHub Trending and Trendshift: after the repo had been up for 60 days (from 10-09), it hit the TypeScript daily/weekly/monthly charts and stayed on the weekly chart; from 11-04 it held weekly #4, and organic traffic followed.
  7. Built-in self-promotion design: SKILL.md encourages users to "@ the author (X / Douyin / Xiaohongshu)" when sharing videos; the Showcase submission form says "you can leave your handle so people who see your work can find you"; npx skills add listed on skills.sh; skill directory sites (ui-skills, onei, open-design, typingmind, etc.) auto-indexed it; AtomGit mirror for mainland China users; READMEs in four languages (Chinese, English, Japanese, Russian).
  8. Account suspension incident: 10-05 the author asked for help on X, "10.3k stars, 931 forks," and the account was restored the same day. The incident itself drew some attention, but no clear spike is visible in the curve.

No evidence found of HN front page or Product Hunt; no paid promotion (open-source project, nothing to sell).

4. Where the money comes from

The skill itself is free. From 10-13 the README added Sponsors: APIMart (with tracking link go.apimart.ai/tw-video-shotcraft), PackyCode (signup link with affiliate code aff=l9IZ, selling Claude Code / Codex relay access), and AWS. In other words, the author is converting stars and traffic into sponsorships and API-relay affiliate commissions, while also growing his personal X / Douyin / Xiaohongshu followings (his X bio reads "GitHub 10k+ stars"). His pinned post also mentions "the Jianying hub quietly listed my template," showing platforms are already using the template.

5. Why this one

  • Sharp problem framing, and the gap is obvious: everything people made with Remotion + Claude had fades, pans, and cards flying everywhere. It wrote camera moves, transitions, beats, sound effects, and frame-level QA into recipe cards an agent can follow, and the gallery's 150 animations make the point instantly. What it sells is "taste + method," not code.
  • Shipped as a complete product from the start: on day one it had 106 cards, 160+ previews, a verified Ink Press template, and a gallery page; on day two it added SEO (OG / JSON-LD / Search Console), Apache-2.0, a Claude plugin manifest, and star history. Its polish is clearly above the contemporaneous "a few prompts + Remotion" skills.
  • Hit both Chinese and English communities: Chinese KOLs wrote tutorials, English reposter accounts aggregated it, there's an AtomGit mirror in China, and the Jianying export is a localized selling point (exactly what app makers in China need for Xiaohongshu and Douyin).
  • Kept updating, with a new topic each time: July v1 → August CapCut export, video-talkcraft → September Motion Workbench → October Opus 5.5 rewrite of 2.0, four-language README, Showcase page. Commits and PRs come in fast, with a dozen-plus external contributors.
  • Rode a platform event: after Opus 5.5 launched, "AI motion-graphics video" suddenly became a hot topic, and it was already the most-starred in its category, so it naturally topped every list.

6. Differentiation

Compared with the foundations (Remotion's official skills, HyperFrames), its added value is the "director layer": shot recipe cards + a dynamic preview gallery + a pipeline from storyboard → beat timing → sound → frame QA, plus editable deliverables (Remotion source, Workbench, Jianying drafts). Compared with one-click launch-video tools like brag, it's heavier but more cinematic and more editable. Compared with video generation models, it uses real screenshots, so it avoids "fake UI."

This differentiation is why it took off: what users see, and what reposter accounts share, are the shots in the gallery that "don't look like PowerPoint." But the moat is shallow: recipe cards are markdown + React components, easy to copy (GoSailGlobal says several repos already follow it; 花叔 and 歸藏 both built skills with the same positioning), and the author himself admits Opus 5.5 does well without the skill.

7. Visibility and copycats

  • Visibility: already widely discussed. 17k+ stars, TypeScript weekly #4; Chinese coverage from Tencent Cloud, cnblogs, and several X KOL threads; English coverage from tom_doerr, GithubProjects, daily.dev, Reddit, LinkedIn, YouTube; it's also been collected into many "Claude video skill" lists, ranking first. No revenue can be disclosed (open source), but the README already carries sponsor and affiliate links.
  • Copycats: alchaincyf/huashu-motion (10-18,2.4k, "one-click commercial-grade product promo video"), op7418/guizang-product-video-skill (9-18,907), feitangyuan/onetake (9-26,3.8k), lemomo-ai/lemo-opuscar (9-26,12.6k, style library), openfilm (10-04,4.9k). This track is already crowded.

8. What others can learn

  1. Turning "taste" into an asset library an agent can read (recipe cards + a runnable demo per card + an online gallery) is more reliable than a long prompt, and easier to spread. The approach can transfer to PPT, posters, landing pages, e-commerce hero images, and data visualization.
  2. Deliverables carry their own promotion: a skill-made promo video is itself the ad; the Showcase submissions and the "@ the author when sharing" convention turn users' work into secondary exposure.
  3. One author, one product line, with READMEs cross-linking each other (shotcraft → talkcraft → anything2explainer → mg-styles-15), each repo pulling in new users for the others.
  4. Localized wedge: Jianying export, AtomGit mirror, Chinese KOL launches, then English READMEs and skills.sh catch overseas traffic.
  5. Monetization: once stars grew, sponsorship and affiliate links to API-relay and model platforms were added.

9. Still unclear

  • The exact date and view count of the author's first X post; how many stars were gained each day from July to August (stargazers API 404; Trendshift only gives the last 61 days).
  • Whether it was launched on Xiaohongshu or Douyin and how it performed (the author has accounts, but TikHub wasn't checked this time).
  • Real usage: installing requires Node / ffmpeg / Remotion, and how far stars differ from people who have actually made videos is unknown; the number of Showcase submissions wasn't found (GitHub API rate-limited).
  • How much value the skill keeps after Opus 5.5: the author himself said "consider uninstalling," yet October star growth accelerated. In the short term it rode the video wave; long-term value is unverified.
  • Sponsorship income is unverified.
