Dozens of outlets covered it, but it has under 500 stars: the person who turned a jailbroken PS5 into a Steam console, and the star ceiling for projects like this
What it is A Linux system image for jailbroken PS5: plug in a USB drive, boot straight into a Steam Deck-style big-screen UI with gamepad, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth already set up, and unplug the drive to return to the stock PS5 OS. Free and open source.
Why it blew up An October exploit and new loader let many ordinary PS5 owners install Linux for the first time, and it shipped a ready-to-use build the next day. 'Turn your PS5 into a Steam Machine' rode the wave of Steam Machine's high price and console price hikes, and media covered it en masse. The author also runs the community wiki and put his own build first in the recommendations.
CHow you could follow it Don't build another one for the PS5. Copy the playbook: watch the next device whose low-level access opens up, ship a ready-to-use build as soon as the loader drops, or turn its general layer (the bootc game image template, the CI pipeline) into a tool developers will star.

ps5-bazzite-deck is a Linux system image for jailbroken PS5: plug in a USB drive, boot into the Steam Deck big-screen UI, play PC games from Steam, and unplug the drive and reboot to get back to the stock PS5 OS. It launched in the month the PS5 jailbreak wave peaked, the day after a new loader came out, and was then covered by dozens of outlets including VideoCardz, TechPowerUp, and TechRadar. But as of 11-06, it had only 471 stars on GitHub. For developers trying to build a name with open source, the lesson is how to time a platform event, and a reminder that player-facing projects get far fewer stars than their real reach.
Afternoon article on Oct 29
On Oct 29 16:35 (GMT) in 2026, hardware news site VideoCardz published a piece titled 'PlayStation 5 can now run Steam games via Bazzite Linux, with up to 40 GPU compute units unlocked.' The body was specific: the jailbroken PS5 boots from an external drive straight into Steam Gaming Mode, 4K 60Hz, 1440p 120Hz, HDMI audio, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and wireless DualSense all work. Early Reddit users ran Horizon Zero Dawn, Palworld, Genshin Impact and RimWorld, with some reporting Marvel Rivals wouldn't launch. An optional toggle unlocks the standard PS5 GPU from 36 to 40 compute units.
The next day, TechPowerUp ran 'PS5 turns into a Steam Machine', TechRadar's headline was 'Can't afford a Steam Machine? Now you can turn your PS5 into one', with a follow-up line saying 'but I really don't recommend it', citing possible illegality of jailbreaking and the risk of a Sony ban. HotHardware, Tweakers and Notebookcheck followed, then reprints in Chinese, Portuguese and Ukrainian.
The repo's stars went from 10-29 to 85,10-30 in one day in 96, and reached 11-06 by 471 (GitHub daily data). Dozens of outlets covered it but it has only a few hundred stars, a gap we'll come back to.
What it is and who made it
The author, Gilles, goes by VivaLaVent on GitHub and has been building PS5 homebrew for a while; another repo, kodi-ps5 (56 stars, created in September), is his too. ps5-bazzite-deck was created on 10-20 and shipped v1.0 the same day.
It doesn't write a system from scratch. It ports the open-source gaming distro Bazzite (Steam Deck mode) to the PS5 and gathers scattered community patches: kernel work from others, GPU driver patches for the PS5 Pro, 4K120 output, suspend, fan control. Gamepad, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and HDR are preconfigured, and DualSense doesn't need re-pairing between the two systems. From v2.5 on it became a bootc image, updatable with one click in Steam and rollback-able if something breaks.
In 17 days it went from v1.0 to v2.6.1, over twenty versions, often several a day. In the latest pre-release notes, one entry reads 'PS5 Pro: games that showed a black screen now run', another says 'FSR5 AI upscaling on the PS4 Pro is about 3.6x faster, and Dragon's Dogma 2 frame generation holds at 60 fps'. TechRadar quoted a Reddit user: 'Been using it for 4 days, wow! Way better than the others... always updating and fixing bugs.'
The project has no paid tier, just a Ko-fi donation link.
Why October
PS5 running Linux wasn't new in October. In 2026 April, well-known exploiter TheFlow published ps5-linux, but it only supported older PS5 consoles on firmware 3.00–4.51, and few people owned one. He announced he was quitting in September, and called whoever reported the bug to Sony a 'LLM-using noob'.
Over the next month the situation changed:
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| 9-29 | Exploit chain covering firmware 7.00–13.60 published |
| 10-12 | Hypervisor (HV) exploit extended to 13.60 |
| 10-16 | YouTube tutorials on 'the new Linux loader for 13.60 PS5', 152k views |
| 10-19 | Loader forks for 13.60 and PS5 Pro appear |
| 10-20 | ps5-bazzite-deck releases v1.0 |
| 10-22/23 | French, Russian and Japanese jailbreak-community sites report first |
| 10-29/30 | VideoCardz leads, mainstream tech media follow |
Lots of ordinary players' PS5 can run Linux for the first time. But installing a standard distro leaves Bluetooth, HDMI, fan control and Wi-Fi for you to fight with, and what you end up with is still a 'computer'. ps5-bazzite-deck fills in the 'Linux runs, now what' step: after install it's a game console.
The outside buzz lines up too: Valve's Steam Machine just launched and isn't cheap, and console prices are climbing (news that the PS5 Pro is going up to $900 made the front page of Hacker News 10-12). Lines like "Turn the PS5 you already own into a Steam Machine for free" and "Unlock the 4 GPU cores hidden in the PS5" could be lifted straight into headlines.
Where users come from
- The author maintains the community wiki himself. Newcomers installing Linux on a jailbroken PS5 go to the wiki at wiki.ps5-linux.eu. Its "choose an image" page says "sorted means recommended order": the first entry is PS5 Bazzite Deck, and a note below reads, "This wiki is maintained by Gilles (VivaLaVent), who is also the author of PS5 Bazzite Deck. It's ranked first because its kernel gets these fixes first." The official image was built in late July and doesn't support the PS5 Pro GPU or the Slim's Wi-Fi. Newcomers follow the steps, and by step three they're on his image. It's the cheapest and most durable channel of the lot.
- Jailbreak-scene small sites broke it first, tech media picked it up. tgames.fr and playground.ru wrote about it 10-22/23 first; a week later VideoCardz covered it, and the next day the big outlets all followed. The star count inflected that day.
- Reddit and Discord. r/PS5_Jailbreak and r/ps5homebrew have posts titled "turn your PS5 into a Steam console with ps5-bazzite-deck." The user quotes that two outlets cited came from these threads (post scores unavailable). The Discord has dedicated bazzite help and PS5 Pro testing channels, with pre-release builds pushed automatically, so users become testers as a side effect.
- YouTube tutorial. Get Droid Tips's install tutorial, posted 10-30, has 18k views.
We found no discussion on Hacker News or X, and it never reached GitHub Trending.
Why the star count is so low
Among all PS5-related repos, it ranked #7 by stars gained over the last 3 days (+290, GitHub daily data, 11-06). The top one, AnyPS5, gained +1,940 in a week; second, KytyPS5, gained +560. Playden, which also runs PC games and takes the route of running Wine inside the PS5 native system, has 1,002 stars.
Dozens of media articles produced fewer than 500 stars. The audience is the reason: the people arriving are players. They download images from Releases and ask questions on Discord, and it doesn't occur to them to hit star. The project's real user base is probably much larger than its star count (inference; download counts weren't checked). If your goal is stars, this gap matters more than anything else.
Who's nearby
| Project | Scale (11-06) | Compared with alternatives |
|---|---|---|
| ps5-linux official images (Ubuntu, Arch, Fedora, etc.) | 110 star | Generic distros that you configure yourself; builds stalled in late July |
| ps5-linux-loader (TheFlow) and the soniciso1 fork | 540 / 305 star | Only boots Linux; it's the base that finished products are built on |
| Playden | 1,002 star | Keeps the system, runs Windows games through Wine inside Sony's native OS |
| PS5_MihawkOS | 379 star | A homemade OS that aims to feel like Windows |
| PC5 | 127 star | A Wine game launcher inside the native OS |
| Valve Steam Machine | Hardware | Requires buying new hardware |
No one has yet shipped a second "PS5 + Steam big-screen distro." Upstream official images do include a Bazzite build, but without these PS5-specific fixes, and the wiki is in the author's hands, so matching him on PS5 would be hard.
If it were you
Verdict: C. The play of "ship a turnkey product the day after the platform opens up" is worth learning from, but the PS5 slot is already taken. The author holds the wiki's recommended spot and has shipped over twenty versions in half a month, and projects like this rarely earn many stars anyway. Building another one on PS5 won't earn much.
Who it fits: people who spend a lot of time in a hardware-modding, jailbreak, or emulator scene and can turn a fresh exploit or low-level tool into a finished product within a day or two; or people willing to take over and maintain a community wiki or docs.
Who it doesn't fit: people who want star counts and GitHub homepage exposure. Players reading about a gaming project don't hit star, so even heavy media coverage yields only a few hundred. It's also a poor fit for anyone unwilling to carry legal risk: jailbreak-related projects can get a cease-and-desist at any time, or be shut down by a single firmware update.
How to do it (the two directions worth more):
- Switch machines and ride the next platform event. Watch for the next device whose low-level access has just opened up (another console, a handheld, a TV box, a car head unit), and ship a turnkey build as soon as the loader drops. The headline formula the media loves is "turn X into Y," with a quantifiable selling point.
- Build the part developers also use. Stars come from developers, not players. Pull out the generic layer of this approach and make it standalone: for example, a template and CI pipeline for building bootc game images on any ARM/x86 box, or hardware monitoring and fan control tools for the PS5 that developers will fork.
How to get users: post first in the jailbreak scene's smaller-language sites and Reddit subs, and let the in-scene sites write it up; prepare one line that works as a headline, for hardware news sites to pick up; become a maintainer of a wiki or docs yourself and write the newcomer flow so it runs through your project; open a Discord and auto-push pre-release builds into it so early users can test for you.
When to move: the window for this PS5 wave depends on how many consoles are still on firmware 13.60 or below, since 14.xx is already unsupported, and each Sony update shrinks that group. If you switch devices, you need to move within a week of the next loader going public.
Signs you've misread this: (1) the repo passes 2,000 stars in a month without a new round of media coverage, which would mean player-facing projects don't star that little and the verdict above is too pessimistic; (2) someone builds a similar distro for PS5 and passes it in stars within two weeks, which would mean the wiki's recommended slot is less secure than it looks; (3) Sony's bans or legal action land on projects like this, in which case even studying them needs care.

VivaLaVent/ps5-bazzite-deck: why it took off
In one line: a custom Bazzite (Steam Deck mode) image that turns a jailbroken PS5 into a "Steam console." It landed during the October 2026 PS5 jailbreak surge, when higher firmware (13.60) could finally run Linux. At the same time, Valve's Steam Machine was expensive and console prices were climbing. It was the first product to package "PS5 Linux" as "boots into the Steam big-screen mode." Between October 29 and 30, dozens of outlets including VideoCardz, TechPowerUp, and TechRadar covered it, and stars jumped by 96 in a day.
1. Basics (data)
- Repo created 2026-10-20; v1.0 released the same day (tgames.fr: "The first public release dates from 20 October 2026; version 1.1.0 came out on 23 October").
- Daily stars on our GitHub repo: 10-24 42 → 10-29 85 → 10-30 181 (+96, biggest single day) → 10-31 258 → 11-01 334 → 11-03 421 → 11-06 471. Over the last 7 days +290, forks 19. The GitHub page showed 482 stars, 18 forks, 273 commits, and 7 watchers at 11-06.
- Peer comparison (GitHub repos, 11-06, stars gained over the last 7 days): among all PS5-related repos, it ranked #3. The top two are boykopovar/AnyPS5 (51,433 stars, +1,940) and KytyPS5 (+560). It grew faster than its base, ps5-linux/ps5-linux-loader (540 stars, +66), and faster than Playden over the same period (1,002 stars, +133).
- The author Gilles (VivaLaVent) has only two repos on GitHub; the other is kodi-ps5 (56 stars, created 2026-09-25). He has been building PS5 homebrew for a while; this isn't a new account.
- Maintenance is very intense: v1.0 → v2.6.1 in 17 days, with a self-built GitHub Actions pipeline (kernel, bootc image, loader, and automatic Discord release notifications). The CHANGELOG often has several versions in one day.
- Stars are badly out of proportion to exposure: dozens of media articles, only about 480 stars. The readers are players who mostly go to Releases to download and to Discord for help, and don't hit star. The GitHub API was rate-limited at the time, so Release download counts weren't checked.

| 11-04 → 11-06 | v2.5 switched to a bootc image, one-click updates through Steam, supports Pro 60 CU | CHANGELOG |
Bottom line: the platform event blew up the number of people who could install it. In April, Linux only ran on a handful of old-firmware Phat consoles. By mid-October, the HV exploit and the loader covered 11.xx–13.60 and PS5 Pro, and for the first time a lot of ordinary players had a machine that could run Linux. The loader tutorial video alone got 150k views (13.60 10-16), so the demand was already there. ps5-bazzite-deck shipped the day after the loader branch came out, and it filled the gap of "it runs Linux, now what?"
Why users show up now and stay:
- The narrative lined up: Valve's Steam Machine had just launched at a high price (TechRadar's headline was literally "Can't afford a Steam Machine?"), and consoles were broadly getting more expensive (HN 10-12: PS5 Pro rose to $900). "Turn the PS5 you already own into a Steam Machine" is a headline outlets love and players love to share.
- It had a hardware hook worth stating: "unlocks 5 compute units hidden on the PS4 GPU (36→40 CU)". HotHardware, RevistaTIC and playground.ru all used it as their headline.
- Doesn't touch the original system: boots from USB, and a reboot returns you to the PS5 OS, so the psychological barrier is low.
- Retention came from fast iteration: over twenty releases in 17 days. A Reddit user quoted by TechRadar said: "I've been using this distro for 4 days, and WOW! ... way better than the others. There are constant updates that bring bug fixes." After v2.5, updates can be applied in Steam with one click, and problems can be rolled back.
3. Growth tactics (evidence)
- The author controls the docs entry point (the most important distribution lever). The community wiki wiki.ps5-linux.eu is maintained by author Gilles. The wiki's "Choose your image" page lists PS5 Bazzite Deck first ("Order reflects the recommendation"), and states "This wiki is maintained by Gilles (VivaLaVent), who also makes PS5 Bazzite Deck". The third step of the six-step PS5 Linux setup guide leads straight to his image. The official image is stuck on the 2026-07-31 build with kernel 7.1.4, which "predates the PS5 Pro's GPU support and the Slim's Wi-Fi". In effect, the official entry point funnels traffic to him.
- Community Discord: discord.gg/ps5linux, with #bazzite-problems, #bazzite-general and #bazzite-ps5-pro-tests channels. Pre-release builds are pushed to Discord automatically.
- Reddit: the author (or a user) posted "Turn your PS5 into a Steam machine with ps5-bazzite-deck" on r/PS5_Jailbreak and r/ps5homebrew. The user quotes cited by TechRadar and VideoCardz came from these two threads. Post scores were not captured, as Reddit blocked access.
- Chain reprints by tech media (the main cause of the star inflection): French and Russian jailbreak-scene sites reported first on 10-22/23 → VideoCardz 10-29 → TechPowerUp, TechRadar (noting "TechPowerUp noticed"), HotHardware, Tweakers, Notebookcheck and others 10-30 followed → Chinese (Sina, Qooah), Portuguese and Persian outlets and Ukrainian coverage followed. Stars jumped on 10-30 itself, matching the time VideoCardz published.
- YouTube tutorial: Get Droid Tips, "Turn Your PS5 Into a Steam PC Computer! (Bazzite Setup Guide)", published 10-30, 18k views.
- Not found channels: HN (no bazzite-related stories in our database), X (x-radar local corpus search returned 0), ads. GitHub Trending only admits repos about 60 days old, so it's unrelated.

| ps5-linux/ps5-linux-loader(TheFlow) | Open source (base) | 2026-04-24 | 540 stars (+66/7d) | Just a loader, not a finished system. It depends on the loader and ships its own bazzite-bootc-loader |
| soniciso1/ps5-linux-loader | Open source (loader branch) | 2026-10-19 | 305 stars | Same as above; it merges soniciso1's firmware offsets into its own loader |
| leolobato/playden-ps5(Playden) | Open source, a Wine compatibility layer running on the original PS5 system | 2026-10-12 | 1,002 stars (+133/7d) | Playden runs Windows games on top of Sony's system; this replaces the whole thing with Linux + Proton and the full Steam client (per TechRadar's comparison) |
| bornaradusin/PC5 | Open source, a PC game launcher based on prospero-win (Wine/DXVK/VKD3D) | 2026-10-22 | 127 stars | Same "run PC games inside the original system" approach |
| mihawk-99/PS5_MihawkOS | Open source, a self-made "Windows-like" OS | 2026-10-18 | 379 stars | Similar direction, but it focuses on the Steam Deck interface and the Proton ecosystem |
| abrocoma/cachyos-ps5-guide | Open source, a PS5 fix guide on CachyOS | 2026-10-25 | 26 stars | A guide, not an image; its fixes were also absorbed into the wiki credits |
| Users hand-configure Ubuntu/Arch + Steam themselves | Other | From ¥2026-04 | Unknown | High barrier: Bluetooth, HDMI, fans and Wi-Fi all have to be set up manually |
| Valve Steam Machine | Big-brand hardware | 2026 | Unknown | Requires buying new hardware; this one turns an existing PS5 into a Steam machine for free |
Copycats: found no repo that directly replicates "PS5 + SteamOS-style big-screen distro" (github search across bazzite/steamos/chimeraos/cachyos/holoiso × ps5). Adjacent projects include decky-ps5-dashboard (50 stars, 10-24), which turns the SteamOS skin into a PS5 main interface. The upstream official image also offers "upstream's Bazzite builds", but without its PS5-specific fixes.
5. Differentiation
- Product shape: others offer "a Linux that boots" or "Wine inside the original system". This offers the console experience: boots straight into Steam Gaming Mode, with controller, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, HDR/VRR/4K120, fans and sleep all tuned. DualSense doesn't need re-pairing between the PS5 system and Linux. One-click updates and rollbacks (bootc) too.
- Integration speed: it combines patches scattered across the community (rmux's kernel, Borchev's Pro GPU and RADV, Lawson's 4K120, Dasloh's sleep work, etc.) into one image that keeps shipping releases. The wiki says: "It is recommended first because its kernel had the fixes first".
- A number you can put in a headline: 40 CU unlocked (60 CU on the Pro).
- Was it the reason it took off? Yes, but only given the platform event. The differentiation (a Steam Deck-style finished product, plus a media-friendly "PS5 becomes a Steam Machine" headline) is what made it the one outlets picked out of the many PS5 Linux projects. What really expanded the potential user base was October's HV exploit and the 13.60 loader. The author also maintains the wiki, so the differentiation extends to the entry point.
6. Visibility
Widely covered by media: VideoCardz, TechPowerUp, TechRadar, HotHardware, Notebookcheck, Tweakers, plus Chinese, French, Russian, Portuguese and Ukrainian outlets. But GitHub stars are small, and there's no movement on X (per the local corpus) or HN. The project has no revenue, only Ko-fi donations.
7. Takeaways
- Shipping a finished product one day after the platform event: when an exploit or low-level capability first opens up, users are stuck at "it runs, but it's not usable", and whoever builds the bundle and polished experience captures the biggest traffic.
- Controlling the docs and wiki entry point: as the community wiki maintainer, putting your own product first in the recommendations. It's the cheapest long-term distribution.
- Writing the product as a media headline: "PS5 becomes a Steam Machine", "unlocks hidden GPU cores", one sentence with a quantifiable hook.
- High-frequency releases plus automatic Discord pushes turn early users into testers and word-of-mouth sources. The credits page lists dozens of contributors and testers.
- Star counts badly underrate the real reach of player-facing projects. Evaluate projects like this through media coverage and Discord.
8. Uncertain
- Release download counts, Discord membership and Reddit post scores were not captured (GitHub API rate limits, Reddit blocking).
- Whether the Reddit posts were by the author personally is unverified.
- Legal and platform risk: Sony could ban accounts or patch the exploit, and 14.xx firmware isn't supported. The growth ceiling depends on how many consoles are still on exploitable firmware.
- Unclear whether the author uses a lot of AI-written code. Commits and CHANGELOG style are very regular, but unverified. TheFlow, when quitting, targeted "LLM-using newbies", and the community is sensitive to this.
