Someone else got God of War running, so he built the installer: gow-native-pc, 12 days, 200 stars, 10k downloads
What it is A one-click installer: you supply your own PS2 God of War disc image, and it compiles the game into a native Windows program on your PC. No emulator.
Why it blew up AI-assisted static recompilation for October is hot, and God of War 1 never got an official PC version. Upstream projects only offered builds for developers. This was the first version anyone could download and play, its release notes are full of measured numbers, and the media quoted them directly.
BHow you could follow it Watch the recompilation scene for old games that already run on screen but have no installer, and ship a one-click version first. Or fill the gaps it skipped, like PAL/Japanese versions or a Mac build, and post each release to r/decomps and submit it to the port directories.

PS2 God of War (2005) native PC ports: at least five showed up on October. A Brazilian developer with no prior projects, who wrote no recompiler himself, just wrapped upstream work into a three-step "pick the ISO, click install" wizard. In 12 days he got about 200 stars and 10k installer downloads, and several player outlets named him. Below is how it took off, and whether someone wanting stars for their open-source project can repeat it.
A second God of War port on the same day
On 2026 Oct 31, retro port news site decomps.net ran two God of War stories in one day. The morning piece covered Daniel Alves' gow-pc-port. This afternoon's headline reads: "A second God of War PS2 port, gow-native-pc, drops on 3.0, runs at higher frame rates and even on old PCs." The article says author Vnnc1 released two versions that same day, 3.0.0 and 3.0.1, and posted about them on Reddit's r/decomps the same day.
The article quotes the release notes directly: on the author's own PC, average framerate went from about 51 to 57, and the worst combat scene went from 51 to 55. Older GPUs that only support OpenGL 4.3 (Intel HD 4000-class) no longer need software rendering. First-time install takes about 25 to 30 minutes on a six-core CPU. There's also an honest caveat: "not at 100% yet," and heavy combat still locks at 60 fps.
The same day, @Sepreth on X posted about it: "This is static recompilation, not an emulator. Bring your own PS2 ISO, and the launcher compiles a PC version for you." The next day ixbt.games and VGTimes ran "God of War 2005 now has two unofficial native PC ports." 11-01 It added 31 stars in a single day, its peak to date.
What it is
It's not an emulator. The principle is to statically translate the PS2 game's MIPS machine code into C++, then compile it into a Windows program. The repo ships no game files: you need your own US disc image (SCUS-97399). The launcher first downloads the build tools, reads your ISO, and compiles the game on your machine.
The key point: the hardest part wasn't his work. His own CREDITS.md is clear: the translator comes from PS2Recomp (3.8k stars), and God of War's runtime, renderer and vector-unit code come from KIexster, Waffle565 and Tobiichi's projects. These upstream projects got the game onto the screen one after another through 5 to 11 October, but they were aimed at developers: you had to set up the environment and compile it yourself.
Vnnc1 added the layer ordinary players need:
- A setup.exe with a three-step install, and a loading screen showing progress and time remaining
- Auto-updates, 9 interface languages, keyboard and mouse controls, and the F1 in-game menu
- Recognizes fan-translated and Portuguese-translated ISOs
- Runs a build optimized for the local machine during install (PGO), for higher framerates
- Each release comes with measured framerates, a hardware table and known issues
The author, Almir Vinicius, is Brazilian, has 5 GitHub followers, and this is his first project. The repo has a instructions file for Claude, and 65 commits credit Claude as co-author in 43 of them. Created 10-25, and by 11-03 he had shipped 6 versions.
200 stars behind 10k downloads
| Date | star | What happened those days |
|---|---|---|
| 10-25 | 0 | Repo created, first version released, posted to r/decomps |
| 10-26 | – | Second version, "compiles faster, installs simpler," posted again |
| 10-27 | 68 | First players reporting errors and requesting features in issues |
| 10-31 | 99 | 3.0.1 release; decomps.net coverage; @Sepreth introduced it on X |
| 11-01 | 130 | ixbt.games and VGTimes coverage, +31 in a single day |
| 11-02 | 160 | framesgames and DSOGaming coverage |
| 11-06 | 202 | Dropped back to single digits per day; 7 forks |
Few stars, but plenty of users. Download counts on the GitHub release page (11-06): setup.exe across versions roughly 7,100 times, zip about 2,700 times, Linux build about 250 times, roughly 10k in total, more than 35 times the star count. That includes auto-updates and repeat downloads, so it isn't a user count, but the direction is clear: most people coming in are players, not GitHub users.
The issues section confirms it. 10-27, a player named SFZeroEXE asked "how do I fix this error," and after ten back-and-forth messages replied: "Thanks, it works, but why does it take up 15 GB?" An Italian player wrote a one-line title, "Want the PAL version, I'm Italian." Others asked for the Japanese version, 32:9 ultrawide support, or a Mac build, and several were written in Portuguese. A Chinese developer, huanghuangdaquan, submitted a fix for the fan-translated ISO and forked a low-spec optimized version.
On YouTube, ANGEL4EVA's "GOD OF WAR 1 – NATIVE PC PORT | 4K | RTX 5080" got 6 views in 6,940 days, and the title names this project; Brazilian channels each got a thousand or two.
Why this one, not the first person to get it running
Timing. October 2026 was the month "AI-assisted static recompilation" broke out. The biggest hit of the period, totk-pc-recomp, added over 4,800 stars in a week. Players were chasing "which classic runs natively now," God of War 1 is a flagship PS2 title, Sony never released a PC version, so the demand was already there.
It's the version you can download and play. When outlets wrote "God of War now runs natively on PC," they needed a link readers could click. KIexster, who got it running first, has 227 stars but no installer. Vnnc1 and Daniel Alves's two one-click versions became the two that got covered side by side.
The release notes are ready-made copy. Every version spells out framerates, system requirements and what still doesn't work. decomps.net, framesgames and ixbt quoted numbers straight from his README and release notes.
One person moving this fast was AI. A person with no track record integrated five upstream projects, shipped 9 versions in 6 days, and answered a dozen-plus issues. Two years ago that would have been hard to pull off (inference).
Also keep in mind: this edge is thin. Daniel Alves's gow-pc-port launched 5 days earlier, also AI-assisted, also one-click install, also with Portuguese support, and its stars already passed 150, about the same as his.
Who it's competing with
| Project | Launched | star | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| PCSX2 | Since 2002 | Mainstream PS2 emulators | Emulation: mature and stable, God of War has been playable for a long time |
| KIexster/god-of-war-recomp | 10-05 | 227 | The first to get the game on screen was its upstream; no installer |
| Tobiichi-Port | 10-06 | 61 | The runtime and launcher it uses come from here; development slowed mid-to-late October |
| Waffle565/God-Of-War-Native-Port | 10-11 | 57 | Source of the renderer and vector-unit code; no updates after 10-18 |
| danielalves96/gow-pc-port | 10-30 | About ¥150–170 | Nearly identical one-click version, 5 days later; the media often covers it alongside this one |
| exoteric33/ps2-native-recomp | 10-28 | About ¥75–130 | General PS2 recompilation; God of War 1/2, Resident Evil 4, Silent Hill 2 are all covered |
Sibling titles in the same series also rose in the same period: the Ascension port got about 400 stars, and the PSP version about 180. Seen against this wave, gow-native-pc is medium-small.
If it were you
Verdict: B, worth a try. "Upstream got the game running, but ordinary people can't use it, so I'll make the one-click version" is a clear, copyable path that AI speeds up a lot, and this recompilation wave still has many games nobody has packaged. But the same game can get two or three one-click versions within days, star ceilings mostly sit at a few hundred, and copyright risk hangs over it.
Who it suits: people who know C++, can wrestle with the Windows build toolchain, and are willing to answer player issues every day. Better still if you're a player of the old game yourself, or already have standing in a language's player community. Among this project's early users, the Portuguese community and fan-translation circles made up a large share.
Who it doesn't suit: anyone aiming for thousands of stars (those go to whoever builds the first recompiler or gets a hot blockbuster running first, like totk-pc-recomp); anyone hoping to make money from it (you bring your own ISO and it's GPL, so commercialization is off the table); anyone who can't handle a DMCA takedown.
How to do it, starting with the most promising option:
- Find games that are "running but not yet packaged." Watch PS2Recomp, the various recomp projects and r/decomps for games where someone just got the picture on screen, and the repo only has build instructions, no installer. That's your opening. Move fast: God of War went from first running to first one-click version in only 20 days, and from the first one-click version to the second in only 5 days.
- Do the parts it didn't do well. The issues section lists them clearly: PAL and Japanese ISOs, a Mac build, changing the install location, the 15 GB footprint, low-spec machines. Take one or two of those (say, the first version that runs on Mac), and that's a point you can post about and get covered on its own.
- A one-click launcher for many games. One launcher managing a dozen recompiled games, with automatic download, compilation and updates. The directory site recomplauncher is already doing this, but no clear winner has emerged in this spot yet (inference).
Whichever path you take, follow its habits: ship no game files, accept only the user's own image, and state measured framerates, system requirements and "what still doesn't work" for every release.
How to get users: each time you release, post to r/decomps and r/recomps with a gameplay clip; also submit to the port directories decomps.net, recompendium, recomp.party and recompsoftware, which are the free distribution channels this wave created; and write clean release notes so player outlets like DSOGaming, ixbt and VGTimes can quote them directly. Write the README in a local language too (his was in Portuguese), then post in that language's player communities.
Get in early: this wave started in October 2026, and player media are still willing to write news for "another classic running natively on PC." Getting started before early 2027 is the safer bet. Once every popular PS2 game has a one-click version, nobody will write these stories anymore (inference).
What would mean I got it wrong: ① Over the next month or two, new same-type one-click builds get only a few dozen stars even after media coverage, which would show players' novelty has worn off; ② Sony or other rights holders start filing DMCA takedowns against these repos, which would make the whole path riskier; ③ The upstream recompilation projects ship their own one-click installers, or a unified launcher appears that bundles every game, which would take the "packaging" slot away.
The last line, for anyone trying to get stars for an open-source project: gow-native-pc shows that in a tech hype wave, the first to get it running gets the reputation, and the first to make it usable for ordinary people gets the users and the links. The second slot has a much lower bar, and a much narrower one.

Vnnc1/gow-native-pc: how a native PC port of PS2 God of War came to run
Data date: 2026-11-06. GitHub data comes from the GitHub API (same day) and our github library (repo_profile / repo_day).
Bottom line
It didn't invent any technology. It wrapped other people's finished PS2Recomp and God of War recompilation runtime (KIexster, Waffle565, Tobiichi) into an installer with three steps: download the tool, pick the ISO, install. It rode the 2026 October wave of "AI-assisted static recompilation ports," and got seen through r/decomps release posts, player media reposts (10-31~11-02), and a circle of recomp aggregator sites. Its real users are players, not GitHub users: 202 stars, and roughly 10k total release-package downloads.
1. What it is
- It statically translates the MIPS R5900 executable of PS2 God of War (2005, NTSC-U SCUS-97399) into C++ with PS2Recomp, then compiles it into a Windows program on the user's own PC. It is not an emulator. The repo ships no game files; users must supply their own ISO.
- Author Almir Vinicius (Vnnc1), Brazilian. The GitHub account was registered 2022 years ago, has 5 followers, and had no prior projects. The README is in English and Portuguese.
- AI-assisted development: the repo has AGENTS.md / CLAUDE.md, and Claude is credited as a co-author on 43 of 65 commits (recompendium.com and recompsoftware.com both label it this way).
- Cadence: repo created 10-25, v0.1.0 shipped the same day. By 11-03 it had reached v0.5.0,9, with 6 releases in 10-31 days (the version numbering restarted from v3.0.1 to 0.x).
- CREDITS.md is clear about it: the runtime, renderer, VU1/IOP, and launcher UI all come from PS2Recomp (ran-j), Waffle565, KIexster, Tobiichi-Port (YYOzcan), and GoW2-nativo-PS2. What it added itself is the install flow, disc detection, support for fan-translated/localized ISOs, PGO, patch selection, a multilingual UI, and documentation.
2. Data

- Release package downloads (GitHub Releases API, 11-06): setup.exe across versions roughly 7,145, windows.zip roughly 2,675, Linux packages roughly 248, total roughly 10k. v0.5.0's setup.exe alone has 2,609. Downloads are 35+ times the star count, which suggests the users are mostly players, not the GitHub developer crowd.
- 25 issues, from players in Brazil, Italy, Japan, and China (asking for PAL, Japanese, Portuguese ISOs, 32:9, and a Mac version). External contributors have also sent PRs (ThisIsAkill's "hold instead of mash" accessibility feature).
- Player videos on YouTube: ANGEL4EVA's "GOD OF WAR 1 – NATIVE PC PORT | 4K | RTX 5080", 6 days, 6,940 views, with the title naming Vnnc1's project. A Brazilian channel, Brother Game, has 1,180 views, and GUSTAVOPREDADOR has 1,926 views (the latter covers Tobiichi's version).

Sibling projects in the same franchise grew at the same time (per the github library): SpartanPort for God of War III Remastered, Ascension (arnaldolima1,399 stars), and the PSP version (DrummingBird1,182 stars). The biggest hit in the wider circle is totk-pc-recomp (5,113 stars, 7 days, +4,824), and SavageWindRecomp (3,193). In this wave, gow-native-pc is only mid-to-small.
4. Where users come from
- Reddit r/decomps / r/recomps: the author posted every release (v2.0.0, v3.0.1, and others; decomps.net says the "developer presented the update on r/decomps the same day"). Posting is confirmed, but post engagement is not visible (Reddit blocked scraping).
- Picked up by player media: decomps.net (10-31), ixbt.games (11-01), VGTimes (11-01), framesgames (11-02), DSOGaming, eTeknix (Facebook). Single-day star peak of 11-01/11-02 lines up exactly. Confirmed.
- X: @Sepreth 10-31 posted an intro ("unofficial native PC port… static recompilation, not an emulator") that matches v3.0.1. Our x-radar corpus did not pick this post up, so reach is not verified.
- Recomp aggregators/directories: recomp.party, recomplauncher.com, decomps.net, recompendium.com, recompsoftware.com, ports.matheusbrauna.com.br, openportsgames, hotrepo.ai, trendshift. During this October wave a batch of "port directory sites" appeared and became a new distribution channel. Listing confirmed.
- YouTube player videos (English 4K demo and a Brazilian Portuguese channel). Confirmed.
- Brazilian/Portuguese-speaking community: the author is Brazilian, the README is in Portuguese, it supports Brazilian fan-translated ISOs, and there are many Portuguese issues. Inferred to be one of the early user sources.
- No signs of paid acquisition, sock puppets, or star farming were found.
5. Why it charted
- Timing: 2026 October saw a concentrated burst of AI-assisted static recompilation (PS2Recomp 3.8k stars; Time Extension already reported in 2026-01 that "native PC ports of PS2 games may be coming"), and players were looking for "which classic runs natively now." God of War 1 is a headline PS2 IP with no official PC release from Sony, so the demand was ready-made.
- Product shape: several upstreams are developer-oriented; this one is the "version for ordinary players": setup.exe, a three-step install, a loading screen with progress and time remaining, auto-update, 9 interface languages, fan-translated ISOs, PGO pretraining, keyboard and mouse support, an F1 in-game menu, and accessibility options. Downloads far exceed stars, which suggests packaging really did catch players.
- Frequent releases, good documentation: 9 releases in 6 days, each with measured frame rates (Xeon + RX 580, 51→57 FPS), known issues, and a hardware table. Media can write these up directly, and they give Reddit posts material. Media cite the numbers from its README (framesgames, ixbt).
- AI development efficiency: a solo developer with no prior track record used Claude to quickly integrate patches from five upstreams, and also brought in an optimization from a fork (huanghuangdaquan's VU1 patch).
6. Differentiation
Its edge isn't the tech (the tech is upstream). It's "integrator + installer + ongoing maintenance." God of War 1 has at least 5 native ports; only it and danielalves96's are one-click builds made for players, while most of the upstream ones haven't been updated since October. That's really why it took off: media picked the version you can download and play, not the first one that ran. Still, this edge is thin. danielalves96 5 shipped something with the same positioning a few days later, and its stars are catching up.
7. Visibility and copycats
- Visibility: buzzing within small circles. Covered by mid-sized player media and the recomp community, but it hasn't made GitHub trending (trending_days_any=0), and its absolute star count is small. Fully free GPL project, no revenue.
- Copycats: danielalves96/gow-pc-port (10-30, same positioning); huanghuangdaquan-beep/gow-native-pc-optimization (a fork that adds Chinese/Japanese versions and low-spec optimizations). In the same period there was a batch of "game + recomp + one-click launcher" projects (NFS HP2 derived from ps2-native-recomp, Robotech, KOF XI, etc.).
8. What to borrow
- The underlying tech is open source, but ordinary people can't easily use it. The "last mile" packaging (installer, auto-update, multilingual support, verification of user-supplied assets) can itself become the entry point. In a hype wave, whoever ships the most usable version is the one media links to.
- Every release comes with a post, and each one includes measured numbers and known issues, which is basically a ready-made article for the press.
- recomp directory sites and aggregators are new free distribution channels that emerged in this wave.
- No obvious money path commercially (copyright gray area, GPL, user-supplied ISO). Good for traffic and reputation, not for direct monetization. Similar integrated "launcher / directory" projects (e.g. recomplauncher) may have more commercial room.
9. Still unclear
- Couldn't get the Reddit post's upvote and comment counts (blocked). Didn't read the DSOGaming article body, so I'm not sure whether the link points to it or to another version.
- Download counts include auto-updates and repeat downloads, so they can't be read as user counts.
- Copyright risk: not sure whether Sony will issue a DMCA. Also not sure how long the buzz will last; it depends on whether 1.0 and 60fps can be achieved.
