A new account with only one repo put DeepSeek Harness on Android phones. Not on trending. Two and a half months, 550 stars, 58k downloads
What it is An Android app that runs DeepSeek's open-source agent tool DSH locally on your phone, with a terminal, file manager, AI browser assistant, and phone control built in.
Why it took off DSH went viral after open-sourcing, but the official build is desktop-only, so "DSH on a phone" became an obvious demand. DSHBox filled out the repo name, topics, bilingual README, and the discussion thread in the parent repo, got picked up automatically by a pile of directory and download sites, and kept growing through frequent updates.
CHow you could follow Don't build another one on the DSH line. Keep this playbook for the next big platform open-source event: within a week or two, ship a "port to phone / another platform" version, saturate search surfaces, post in the parent repo's discussions, and cut a release every week or two.

DSHBox is an Android APK that, once installed, runs the full DeepSeek Harness (DSH) locally on your phone. No root, no Termux. The author, WSK-build, registered the account in 17 2026, and this is the only repo under it. It never made GitHub trending and was never covered by the media. By Nov 6 it had 551 stars, and the installer was downloaded about 58k times. It isn't the winner in this niche, but it handles "a big event hit someone else, how do I get a piece of it" cleanly, and it's worth studying for anyone starting an open-source project.
A post in someone else's repo
In Sep 2026 6, WSK-build posted in the "Show Your Plugins!" category of deepseek-ai/deepseek-harness's discussions. The title was:
DSHBox — Run DeepSeek Harness Locally on Android Phones and Tablets, No Root or Termux
The body is a feature list: Debian, Node.js, DSH, PRoot, and a built-in WebView packed into one APK. It runs on Android 10+ with ARM64. It includes a file manager, a persistent terminal, foreground keep-alive, and online and offline updates. Replies came in over time. In Oct 24 someone asked, "Can you add keyword search within each session?" In Nov 4 someone reported that the updated sandbox couldn't write to the workspace.
The post itself got only 7 reactions. But it sat in a repo with 270k stars, and the timing was lucky. GitHub Releases download counts show that the 6 releases before Sep 11 had only about two hundred downloads combined, and v1.3.1 from Sep 11 jumped to 2,763. At about the same time, directory sites that auto-crawl DSH-related repos, like dshfind, started indexing it (its dshfind entry is 9-11).
What it is, and why people want it
DSH is an agent tool DeepSeek open-sourced in Aug 13. It's a Node.js CLI plus a local web UI, and the official build is desktop-only. It reached 90k stars in the first two days after open-sourcing and 274k by Nov 6 (GitHub, 11-06). With no official phone version, and the DeepSeek App being chat only, "running DSH on a phone" became a ready-made need.
Setting it up on a phone yourself is painful. You have to install Termux, install Node, deal with Android's C library incompatibilities, handle hard links that Android's filesystem rejects, and low-version WebViews show a white screen as soon as you open them. DSHBox fixes these one by one and documents each fix in the README. Its approach is to run a trimmed-down Debian in user space with PRoot, drop DSH in unchanged, and put all compatibility logic in the app and an adaptation layer. It doesn't modify DSH's source. DSH ships a release candidate every few weeks, so keeping up with upstream is easy.
Over time it kept getting more "complete": in Sep 30, v1.4.0 added phone control (39 capabilities, via accessibility / Shizuku / a background virtual display, each requiring approval) and a plugin marketplace. In Oct 17, v1.5.0 added a built-in browser and 24 web-operation tools. In Nov 1, v1.5.1 shipped two APKs, one using the system WebView and one bundling a GeckoView engine, to fix the white-screen problem on older WebViews on Chinese ROMs. In two and a half months there were 10 releases.
The Chinese download site Feixiang Download wrote a long review of it in Oct 27, quoting a forum user:
dshbox apk version, running dsh on a phone with a built-in sandbox, is much safer and more advanced than remotely controlling a PC.
The same page also noted the drawbacks: the APK is about 111MB, and the first run pulls the Debian and Node environments online, so it can hang on a poor connection.
How the stars grew
Daily star record: Oct 11 104 stars, Oct 17 129, Oct 24 235, Oct 31 399, Nov 6 537 (the GitHub API showed 551 later that day). So the first two months only added about a hundred stars. After v1.5.0 shipped, the rate went from three to five a day to twenty or thirty a day. Over the last 7 days it added +167, the first 7 days added +153, with no decay and a single-day peak of +33 (10-28).
Almost all of its traffic is passive:
- Search. The repo is called DSHBox, has 12 topics (dsh-android, dsh-mobile, deepseek-harness-mobile…), a bilingual README, and a GitHub Pages site. Searches like "DeepSeek Harness Android" and "run DSH on phone without root" find it.
- Auto-indexed by directory sites. dshindex, dshfind, dshget, dshplugins, codekk, githubsignals, and a dozen or so other sites list it. Most of these crawl DSH-related repos automatically and include anything whose name and topics match.
- Chinese download and tutorial sites. Besides Feixiang Download, apkeditor.cn published a step-by-step install guide entirely about DSHBox in Oct 26.
- The author posts too, but the volume is small. For each major release there's a Bilibili video. The v1.5.0 video went up in Oct 17 and had 2,091 views by Nov 6. dev.to got a post in Oct 4 with 0 reactions. The release notes link a QQ discussion group.
No media coverage, and no retweets from big X accounts. When dsh-Go, a similar project in the same niche, blew up in Oct 30, DSHBox's daily star growth didn't pick up.
One number worth noting: the ratio of APK downloads to stars is about 100:1 (a single version, v1.5.0, got 37.6k downloads). The similar dsh-Go is around 15:1, and DSHA around 50:1. Most users are ordinary Android users who don't star repos, and the downloads most likely come from download sites (an inference; from the outside you can't tell how much of the download count is in-app updates or repeat downloads).
Who it's competing with
Many. The "DSH on phone" line sprang up together within a few days of DSH open-sourcing. A tech blog from Sep 6 noted that the mobile routes were "created within the same four-day window, from 08-13 to 08-16."
| Project | Approach | star(11-06) | Comparison with DSHBox |
|---|---|---|---|
| ccch1mneyyy/dsh-Go | Flutter app, runs locally + remote-controls a PC | 11,336 (created 10-25, +11k in 7 days) | Author is the dsh-TUI creator, named by the DSH team and covered by Zhidx and YouTube. Rides on the author's reputation |
| DSH-APP/DSHA | APK, full Ubuntu, direct ADB connection | 3,053 | Almost the same pitch, started 3 days earlier, 154k downloads |
| kelai141/dsh-mobile-apk | WebView shell + embedded Termux snapshot | 1,021 | Still Termux underneath |
| jackwener/DSH-Android | Engine embedded in the app, operates other apps by reading the screen | 832 (created 10-27) | Relies on the author's name and retweets on X |
| Soodok/Deepseek-Harness-Local-Android | APK, no root or Termux needed | 480 | Scale and pace closest to DSHBox |
| Remote types (dsh-pocket, ds-harness-remote, etc.) | Phone as a remote for a PC | A thousand or two each | Doesn't run on the phone itself |
At least five projects are saying nearly the same thing: "Run DSH on your phone, no Root, no Termux." DSHBox ranks mid-to-low among on-device options, but its growth has been more sustained than most. The top spot, with its 10k+ stars, went to a creator who already had a following. Someone has also just forked the whole thing (Jack-kd/DSHABOX).
What to learn from it
DSHBox's story is really three things stacked on top of each other:
- Once a major platform open-sources something, "port it to another platform" becomes an almost guaranteed demand. Once DSH took off, phone, desktop, and remote versions appeared within days, dozens of them, and the leaders passed 10,000 stars. But the window is the first few days to weeks. Latecomers either already have a name or, like DSHBox, grind up slowly through iteration.
- Cover the search surface thoroughly, and you get the long tail for free. Keyword-rich repo names, filled-out topics, bilingual READMEs, a Pages landing site, and a post in the parent repo's Discussions. Plenty of automated aggregator sites pick all of this up, and it costs nothing to promote.
- Write the "last mile" pitfalls into the README. Each mobile-specific problem you solve gets its own entry. That doubles as documentation, as search terms, and as trust.
Its differentiators (no source modification, both web and native-app automation, dual engines) are real, but they explain why it kept users and kept growing, not why it took off. Taking off came from DSH itself.
If it were you
The bottom line: building "DSH on mobile" now isn't worth it. The space is crowded and the top spot is taken by a known name. What's worth copying is DSHBox's playbook, saved for the next major platform open-sourcing.
- Who it's for: Developers who can write Android, are comfortable tinkering with Linux environments, and watch GitHub trending daily. The goal: when the next project hits 90k stars in two days, have a working "port it to mobile / another platform" version out within 48 hours.
- Who this isn't for: anyone who wants to copy DSHBox and build another one in the DSH space. At least five projects share the same pitch, and dsh-Go picked up over 10,000 stars in a week. Entering now, your best case is DSHBox's current position: a few hundred stars.
- How to do it: speed wins over feature count. Ship a minimal working version fast, use repo names and topics that people will actually search for, write a bilingual README, and post a showcase in the parent repo's Discussions the same day. Then, like DSHBox, release a new version every week or two and document each pitfall in the README.
- How to get users: the parent repo's Discussions, auto-indexing directory sites, APK download sites, and tutorial sites. If you can, get the parent project's team or a well-known creator to share it. That's the gap between DSHBox and dsh-Go.
- When to get in: the first one or two weeks after a major open-sourcing. This DSH wave is already over. What you can still do is check whether harnesses like Claude Code, Codex, or OpenCode have room for a mobile version, and search before you start.
- What would prove me wrong: if a project like DSHBox, with no name and growing only through iteration, keeps climbing to several thousand stars and even passes DSHA, that would mean the space isn't as crowded as it looks, and latecomers can still win on polish. That would be worth revisiting.

Why DSHBox (WSK-build/DSHBox) managed to take off
In one sentence: an Android APK that bundles DeepSeek Harness (DSH), PRoot, Debian, Node.js, and WebView/GeckoView into one package, running the full DSH locally on phones and tablets. No Root, no Termux. It also ships a terminal, file manager, AI browser assistant, phone control (Pilot), and a plugin marketplace. GPL-3.0. The author, WSK-build, is a 2026-08-17 new account with only this one repo.
Conclusion first
DSHBox wasn't self-propelled. It was lifted by the DeepSeek Harness platform event. DeepSeek open-sourced DSH on 2026-08-13, reaching 90k stars in two days and 275k now. Within days dozens of "DSH on mobile" projects appeared. DSHBox sits at #5–8 by scale in this space (537 stars, versus dsh-Go at 11k, DSHA at 3 thousand, and kelai at 141 1 thousand). It has never hit trending or been covered by media. What it did have:
- Search demand from the platform event ("DeepSeek Harness Android / mobile version"), plus a repo name, 12 topics, a GitHub Pages site, and an English README that covered the search surface. It was picked up automatically by dozens of DSH plugin directories and Chinese APK download sites.
- The author kept posting releases on DSH's official Discussions, Bilibili, dev.to, and QQ groups.
- On the product side, it had the fastest updates and the most complete feature set. Over two and a half months it shipped 10 versions, going from "it runs" to browser automation (24 tools), phone control (39 capabilities), developer mode with ADB/Root, a plugin marketplace, and dual rendering engines. Its steady 20+ stars a day mostly came from feature jumps after v1.5.0 (10-17).
Its differentiators (full DSH running locally, no changes to DSH source, browser and phone automation, dual engines) are real. But at least 5 projects in the space make nearly the same pitch ("Run DSH on your phone, no ROOT, no Termux"), so differentiation is not the main reason it grew. It keeps growing among its peers because of iteration speed and completeness. The top spot went to a creator with a name (dsh-Go).
Data
- Star curve (our GitHub repo_snap/repo_day): 2026-10-11 104 stars → 10-17 129 → 10-24 235 → 10-31 399 → 11-06 537. Over the last 7 days +167, over the first 7 days +153, single-day peak +33 (10-28). So the repo gathered only about 100 stars in its first two months. After v1.5.0 (10-17), the rate rose from 3–6 per day to 20–30 per day, and it has not slowed since.
- Trending: trending_days_any = 0. It has never appeared on GitHub trending (data card).
- APK downloads (GitHub Releases API, 2026-11-06): across 10 release APKs, roughly 57k total. v1.5.0 has two APKs at 33.6k (fix-release alone 25.6k), and v1.5.1 did 11k in its first week. Downloads per star ≈ 100:1, well above peers (dsh-Go about 15:1, DSHA about 50:1). This suggests most real users are ordinary Android users who never star repos. It may also include in-app update checks and repeat downloads from external download-site links (unverified).
- Release cadence (Releases): v0.1.0 08-17, v1.0.0 08-25, v1.1 08-31, v1.2 09-08, v1.3 09-09/11, v1.4.0 09-30 (mobile assistant Pilot, plugin marketplace), v1.5.0 10-17 (AI browser assistant), v1.5.1 11-01 (two APKs: system WebView / bundled GeckoView 158, developer mode).

| Web UI adaptation plugins (a dozen dsh-mobile-* entries in awesome-dsh-plugin) | Make the DSH Web UI usable on narrow screens | since August | Dozens to hundreds each | Only changes the interface |
| Big companies / official | DeepSeek has no official mobile DSH; the DeepSeek App is just chat | — | — | The official gap is the reason this niche exists |
| Cross-platform similar ideas: Operit (9,275 stars, Android AI Agent), google/artemis, Mika, etc. | AI Agents on Android | 2025–2026 | Thousands to tens of thousands of stars | Not based on DSH |
Verdict: it's not that there are no competitors, it's that the space is crowded. Among local-run projects in this lane, DSHBox sits mid-to-low on scale, but its growth persistence beats most peers.
Growth tactics (evidence)
- Platform event + search (confirmed): DSH's parent project blew up, and users actively searched 'DeepSeek Harness Android / phone'. Jina searches for 'DSHBox Android DSH' and 'run DeepSeek Harness on phone no root no Termux' both surface the DSHBox repo, website, and discussion threads. The repo has 12 topics (dsh-android, dsh-mobile, deepseek-harness-mobile…), bilingual READMEs, and a GitHub Pages site (wsk-build.github.io/DSHBox), clearly building out search surface.
- Post in DSH's official Discussions (confirmed): deepseek-ai/deepseek-harness discussion #5801 'DSHBox — Run DeepSeek Harness Locally on Android…', 2026-09-06, posted by the author in the 'Show Your Plugins!' category, with 7 reactions and 4 comments; the README badge links straight to it. Posting a showcase thread in the 270k-star parent repo is the cheapest source of referral traffic.
- Plugin directories / aggregator sites auto-indexing (confirmed): dshindex.com, dshfind.com (9-11), dsh.deepseek404.com, dshai.org, dshget.com, dsh.works, dshplugins.org, dpharness.com, dsh.thyfwq.com, dsh.so, codekk, Context7, nav-ai.net, githubsignals.io all list DSHBox. Most of these sites crawl DSH-related repos automatically, so DSHBox gets passive exposure from its name and topics.
- Chinese APK download sites / SEO content sites (confirmed): Feixiang Download fxxz.com 10-27 has a 'DSHBox mobile download v1.5.0' page with a long review; apkeditor.cn 10-26 published 'Running DeepSeek Harness on Android: a step-by-step guide', a full article about DSHBox. These sites bring in ordinary Android users, which may be one reason downloads far exceed stars (inference).
- The author's own content (confirmed, but small volume): on Bilibili, each version gets a release video. 'Running DeepSeek Harness locally on Android: DSHBox v1.5.0 official update' was posted 10-17, with 2,091 views (jina fetch 11-06); there's also one for v1.4.0. dev.to 10-04 published an intro post with 0 reactions. The release notes include a QQ discussion group, 2163082322.
- Media / big accounts (none found): 智东西/知乎, hermes-ai.net, and YouTube coverage are about dsh-Go; the four-route list in the mushroom blog 9-06 doesn't mention DSHBox; DSHBox and WSK-build appear in the x-radar corpus 0 times; on X, @RepoGems reposted jackwener/DSH-Android.
- Riding the hype (weak): 10-30 dsh-Go went viral, but DSHBox daily adds are still only 20–30, with no clear uplift. So the spillover from "DSH mobile" buzz is limited. Users mostly come from search, download sites, and the parent repo's discussion board.
Why users want to use it
- The pain is real: DSH is a Node.js CLI with a local Web UI, officially built for desktops. On a phone, you originally had to install Node via Termux and deal with pitfalls like Bionic libc incompatibility and hard links rejected by Android's FBE/FUSE (mushroom blog, CSDN 'Can DeepSeek Harness be found on Android?'). DSHBox fills these holes one by one, and the README lists a dozen-plus mobile breakpoints with their fixes.
- Completeness and update speed: 10 versions. v1.4.0 added 39 phone-control features (accessibility / Shizuku / background virtual display, with per-action approval), v1.5.0 added a built-in browser + browser-use with 24 tools, v1.5.1 fixed white screens on old WebViews (bundling GeckoView 158). Each major release visibly stepped up downloads (v1.4.0 4.8k → v1.5.0 33.6k).
- User word of mouth (limited): Feixiang Download relays a forum user saying, 'DSHBox APK version: running DSH on the phone with its built-in sandbox is safer and more advanced than remote-controlling a PC.'
Differentiation
- 'DSH source untouched': all compatibility logic lives in the App, the rendering adaptation layer, and extensions; the bundled DSH stays pristine upstream and can be upgraded separately. This matters a lot for people tracking DSH versions (rc releases every few weeks).
- Two automation stacks, browser (web) + Pilot (native App), with DSH choosing which to call; most peers only do one.
- Dual rendering engines (system WebView / GeckoView as two same-signature APKs that can be swapped), targeting old WebView white screens on Chinese ROMs; rare among peers.
- A self-built mobile plugin ecosystem, awesome-dsh-mobile-plugins, plus a built-in plugin marketplace.
- Is it gaming the numbers? Partly. It explains why DSHBox keeps climbing among peers and has high download counts, but not why it took off; the launch came from a platform event and search. Compared with dsh-Go, DSHBox's features aren't weaker; the gap is the author's name recognition and media coverage.
How many people have seen it
Spreading within small circles: the Chinese DSH developer community, plugin directory sites, Chinese APK download sites. It hasn't made trending, and no media or big X accounts have written about it; the Bilibili release videos have 2k plays. Open source and free, so no revenue involved.
Copycats / followers
Some have directly repackaged the source: Jack-kd/DSHABOX ('DSHBox source code (based on the DSHBox-main workspace)'), plus several same-named forks (Shironana817, GZWXM, alexolan, stronghow, etc., from Brave search results). Peers aren't copying it; they started building the same day independently. Watch out for name clashes: Nexus-Aethra/DSHBox and JeffioZ/dsh-box are desktop projects with the same name but different things.
Takeaways
- 'Moving it to another platform' after an open-source event from a big platform is a high-certainty demand: the phone-DSH line produced dozens of projects in two and a half months, with the top ones at 10k+ stars. The window is the first few days to weeks; latecomers either have a name (dsh-Go) or grind up slowly through steady iteration (DSHBox).
- Build out the search surface all at once: keywords in the repo name, topics filled in, bilingual READMEs, a Pages site, and a post in the parent repo's Discussions. These get picked up by many auto-aggregator sites, earning long-tail traffic at zero cost.
- Go deep on the 'last mile': WebView issues on Chinese ROMs, Android filesystem hard-link problems, and so on. Document each fix you solve in the README; it serves as docs, SEO, and trust-building at once.
- The same playbook could carry over to other harnesses (Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode on Android), but note that the DSH ecosystem is already crowded.
Uncertain
- How much of the 57k APK downloads are in-app updates, outside-link downloads, or repeat downloads is unverified; the true install base is unknown.
- We only have data from 10-11 onward for the daily curve before 10-17; how it accumulated to 100 stars from 8 to September (the role of discussion threads and the Bilibili v1.4.0 video) can't be broken down.
- QQ group size and total Bilibili channel followers were not retrieved.
- Whether DSH's own heat can sustain itself (dsh-Go's boom shows it's still hot) determines this lane's ceiling.
