**Why it took off** Hongguo has 400M monthly active users. Around Oct 22, ads got longer and coins were being phased out, so many people started looking for an ad-free version. The name spread through Bilibili, YouTube, and download sites. After the original package stopped being updated, people searching for it landed on this successor, which is still releasing several versions a week and prompts users to update within the app.

Hongguo Jian / Zhen Guo Jian is a third-party Hongguo short-drama client written in Flutter: no ads, episodes can be downloaded as mp4, and it's adapted for phones, tablets, computers, and TVs. It didn't write the source code; the same codebase has been packaged by more than a dozen people on GitHub. It rose because after the original package stopped updating, only this one kept releasing versions, and it happened to coincide with Hongguo adding ads and cutting coins, so a lot of ordinary people started looking for "Hongguo without ads." Below: where its users come from, why it won among the same-source packages, and whether this path is worth taking.

### "Watching the ads is more painful than watching the show"

On the afternoon of Oct 22, 2026, a Weibo account posted a long post under the hashtag #红果短剧广告变长# (Hongguo short-drama ads getting longer), which Sina News picked up: ads went from 3 seconds to 8–10 seconds. Where one ad used to play every 5 episodes, it now plays every 2–3 episodes, and some shows have one on every episode; mid-roll ads must be watched for 5 full seconds before you can skip. The post quoted a line many people were repeating: "Watching the ads is more painful than watching the show." It also mentioned that the platform would phase out the coin feature: new users would lose access starting November, and it would be fully discontinued by year-end.

That's a big pool. QuestMobile's numbers (via Sina Finance 11-04): Hongguo free short drama had 430M monthly actives in September, up 81.8% year on year. Out of 400M people, even a small slice searching for "Hongguo remove ads" is a sizable stream of traffic.

Part of that traffic landed on Xanerix/guoapp on GitHub. The repo was created on Oct 2 and had 125 stars by 10-17; after 10-22 it gained more than 30 per day, and after 10-28 it gained 40–60 per day. It gained 80 in a single day in Nov 6, reaching 891 stars and 125 forks in total (GitHub daily records, 11-06).

### What it actually is

Open the README and the first line says "This project is adapted from the source code of fish2018." fish2018 is known as "鱼佬" in the netdisk search circle and is the author of PanSou (15k stars). In late September, the source code of his "short-drama library APP" leaked, and between 9-23 and 10-24, at least ten people uploaded their own packages of it to GitHub. The earliest copy, zhoufuweigg/guoapp, hasn't been updated since Sep 26, and its README says "the repo may be deleted at any time."

Xanerix got the same code and kept modifying it:

- **Full-platform adaptation.** On phones, a bottom tab bar and vertical swipes to change episodes; on tablets and computers, a sidebar with the video on the left and episode selection on the right, supporting the spacebar and arrow keys; on TVs, a top tab bar that works with the remote, with a specific fix for the Xiaomi TV issue where the OK button didn't bring up the input method. There are also installers for Windows, macOS, and iOS (unsigned, so you have to sideload it yourself).

- **Download as mp4.** After each episode downloads, it decrypts automatically and combines into a regular mp4, saved as "ShowName/Episode N.mp4" so you can copy it anywhere. The official app and most desktop clients don't offer this.

- **Two versions.** "Hongguo Jian" only has the Hongguo source; "Zhen Guo Jian" also includes Korean dramas, horror films, anime, and a set of short-drama sites called "Ye Guo," "Jin Guo," and "Huang Guo," which can be toggled individually in settings. One is for public sharing, the other is for people who know what they're doing.

- **The README looks like a proper product.** The privacy notice clearly states what the update check and anonymous statistics send, and the receiving-end code for the statistics is also published; disclaimers and installation steps for each platform are all there. For non-technical users, this is much more reassuring than a page with only a download link.

### Where users come from

**First, others gave it a name. The name "红果鉴 / 真果鉴" started spreading in mid-October within small circles. On Bilibili, a "October launch: 红果鉴 + 真果鉴 Lite tutorial" got 12.2k views (10-20). YouTube's "大宇的电视分享号" intro video drew 11.5k views. On X, "周览资源" 10-16 recommended 真果鉴, with 16.7k views. Forks on 吾爱破解, the 老王论坛 and a string of Chinese download sites picked it up too. But many of these pages say "github 官网入口" and mostly point to the original package, which has stopped updating. Without updates, it breaks as soon as the API changes, and anyone searching "红果鉴 github" lands on the one that still ships releases.** 11-06 Search "红果鉴" on a search engine and the first result is Xanerix/guoapp.

**Then it's the releases that keep pulling people back.** Since Oct 4 it has shipped 17 versions: 10-15 to 10-21 at a pace of 8 a week, and after the full rewrite, v1.0.0,11-04 onward, 10-27 went to one a day. The app checks for updates on launch, and when a new version is out it prompts on every start. Users who click it are sent to the GitHub Releases page to download. Every release brought a step up in stars a few days later: 10-21 shipped v0.2.78, and from the next day it was gaining 30+ a day; 10-29 shipped v1.0.1,10-31 and gained 61; 11-05 and 11-06 shipped back to back, and 11-06 gained 80.

Stars are only what some people click while passing by. The Releases page download counts add up to about 57k (GitHub, 11-06), and v1.0.1 alone accounts for 12.7k. The ratio of stars to downloads is about 1.6%, meaning this repo is used by regular users who come to download the installer, not by developers who bookmark it. The issues show the same thing: "1.0.0 version search box, Xiaomi TV system OS3.0 doesn't bring up the input method," "online updating is too cumbersome, can't download the update directly within the app," "the danmaku font feels a bit too large," and people are using it on car head units.

**Finally, Telegram.** The top of the README has two badges: the update channel has 931 subscribers, and the discussion group has 1,091 members (public t.me pages, 11-06). Users report problems and wait for new versions here, where they won't be lured away by other packages.

No trace of paid ads, influencer deals, or press coverage tied to the author. The Hongguo ad controversy lines up with when the star count started climbing, but the causation is inferred: the whole "Hongguo third-party client" category was growing at the same time.

### How crowded this niche is

Very crowded. Between 9 and October, a wave of Hongguo third-party clients appeared on GitHub, and 40+ of them have 50+ stars (11-06). The big ones:

Beyond GitHub there are ad-skipping rule sets like GKD and 李跳跳, DNS ad blockers, and all the "ad-free Hongguo" versions on download sites. The biggest rival is Hongguo itself: it's free and has the most content, and if it decides to block third-party APIs, a single update is enough.

Xanerix only ranks fourth on this table. It wins against the dozen or so repos built on the same source; what drove the whole category's volume was Hongguo's 400M+ users and that week's ad controversy, not how good Xanerix is.

### Its weak spots

**The code and the APIs aren't its own.** The source comes from a project leaked by someone else, and the content comes from Hongguo plus a string of questionable sites. Half the changelog entries are chasing APIs: "fix Hongguo search broken", "remove the dead third-party fallback stream API", "fix loading after the Yegu site redesign", "Qingkong now requires login to play". Every time the other side changes something, it has to fix it too.

**The legal risk is out in the open.** The README says it has "no affiliation with Hongguo short drama or the operators of the other source sites, and no authorization from them". Hongguo is backed by ByteDance. I haven't found any takedown or legal action yet, but projects like this can be wiped out by a single complaint. The "forbidden" and "yellow" sources in Zhenguojian also make it harder for legitimate channels to recommend it.

**It doesn't make money, and doesn't plan to.** GPL-3.0, free. What the author gets is stars, a Telegram group of 2,000 people, and a name that spreads through gray-market circles.

### If it were you

**D. Understanding how it got its stars is enough; don't chase it.** There are already 40+ Hongguo third-party clients. The top one has 6x the stars of the next, and all of them rest on ByteDance's APIs and copyright. If you build another, you either compete on the same source code or reverse-engineer the APIs yourself, and even then you won't crack the top five.

- **Who it's for:** developers already building Flutter or cross-platform players who have existing code, and who want to practice full-platform adaptation and frequent releases on a hot topic, and who can accept that the project could be taken down at any time.

- **Who it's not for:** anyone hoping to build a legitimate portfolio (listing a gray-area project on a resume is a negative), and anyone who can only spare a few hours a week (every time the APIs change you have to fix it the same day, or users leave).

- **How to do it:** if you really want to learn from this, learn the playbook, not the topic. Next time a major platform adds ads, cuts perks, or has a terrible experience on one device (Hongguo's desktop version is hard to use), within the first two weeks build a client for "the platform that's missing this device": TV, car head unit, or desktop, picking whichever the official app does worst. Write the README like a product spec: what it does, how it handles privacy, how to install on each platform. Add an in-app update check and treat the release page as a retention channel. In the first month, ship several releases a week.

- **How to get stars:** first, get the small accounts on Bilibili and YouTube that make "TV box / software recommendation" videos to share the name, since they're short on things to demo. Second, open a Telegram group or channel and keep the spot at the top of the README for it. Third, if you take over a stale project in the same category, put "still maintained" on the first screen, and people searching the old name will find you.

- **When to move:** within two weeks of a platform event. For this wave, the leading projects were already up in early September, so anyone entering in late October can only split what's left.

- **What would mean you misread it:** ① if Hongguo blocks the third-party APIs or GitHub takes down a batch of similar repos, that shows this kind of "clean version for a big platform" project shouldn't be touched at all; ② conversely, if these repos are still up three months from now and Xanerix has grown to several thousand stars, that means the platform is tolerating it, and building a "device the official app does poorly" still has a shot, but you'd have to look at a more niche platform than Hongguo; ③ if the official Hongguo app ships a good TV or desktop version, or ads get reduced again, this demand will fade quickly and the stars on projects like this will stall.

The name "Hongguo Jian / Zhenguo Jian" spread widely around October: a YouTube intro video from "Dayu's TV Sharing" with 11.5k views; a Bilibili "October first release: Hongguo Jian + Zhenguo Jian Lite tutorial" with 12.2k views (10-20); X account "Zhoulan Resources" 10-16 recommending Zhenguo Jian, 16.7k views; the Pojie derivative site (52pojie.org, 10-14), Laowang forum (10-21), RJSHE, j9p, downkuai, qqtf and other download sites all picked it up; SEO sites like Dianjingfeng and Gugong history network write "Zhenguo Jian github official entrance" — but those SEO pages point to **zhoufuweigg/guoapp** . After the original package stopped updating, people searching "hongguo jian github" land on the Xanerix version still shipping releases on GitHub (Jina's first result for "Hongguo Jian" is Xanerix/guoapp).

2. **Continuous releases + in-app update checks (confirmed mechanism, effect is inferred)** . The README says it checks for new versions at launch and prompts every time one exists; people who install it return to the Releases page to download on every upgrade — and among 57k downloads, someone is starring each time. The star-count step-ups line up with release dates.

5. No evidence found of ad buys, creator partnerships, or media coverage of Xanerix itself; the x-radar local corpus has zero posts on "Hongguo Jian / Zhenguo Jian / guoapp" in the last 45 days.

### 4. Why it's breaking out

- **Huge demand that had just been provoked** : Hongguo has 430M monthly actives; in late October ads got longer and rewards shrank, and the "no ads" demand exploded among ordinary users, not just in geek circles.

- **Free mature source code, all effort spent on polish and multi-platform support** : the source comes from fish-bro; on top of it Xanerix shipped v1.0 redesign, separate TV / tablet / PC adaptations, automatic download decryption to mp4, multi-user permissions, backup and restore, and iOS / macOS builds — while other same-source packages mostly stalled at 0.2.5x.

- **"Still being updated" is itself the differentiator** : the original zhoufuweigg package stopped updating after 9-26 and said it might delete the repo at any time; once the API changed, the old package broke, and users naturally moved to this one shipping several versions a week.
