# Prism: one person with Claude, 52 releases in 33 days, 360 stars in a crowded category

**What it is** A free, open-source Android client for YouTube Music. It brings over the signature features of Spotify and Apple Music (word-by-word lyrics, karaoke, DJ mode, local Daily Mix, a listening year-in-review, and a TV app), with no ads and no tracking.

**Why it took off** The old client got taken down and went into maintenance mode, so users were looking for a replacement. The author used AI to ship 52 releases in a month. Redditors said it went live within days and named where the ideas came from, and word of mouth built up in that niche subreddit.

**C** **How you could ride this** Don't build another YouTube Music client. Pick a category that isn't saturated yet, where users keep switching clients, port the feature list of a paid big-company app into a free open-source version, ship releases often, and treat that niche subreddit as both your request pool and your launch channel.

C grade: this category already has dozens of clones, with the top ones at over 10k stars, and it depends on YouTube's private APIs with real DMCA risk, so copying it won't get you stars. What's worth learning is the playbook of "frequent AI-assisted releases + niche community," but you'd need to apply it to a different category, and whether that works is a gamble. Data 2026-10-14 → 2026-11-08 (26 days, 25 observations). Points before 10-28 come from deeply / archive backfill, not every day has one

On Oct 4, 2026, a developer named Yigder with only 31 followers published a repo: an unofficial YouTube Music client for Android. There are dozens of these on GitHub already, the biggest with over 10K stars. 33 days later Prism had 363 stars, its APK had been downloaded about 29k times, and r/YouTubeMusicClients was calling it "the best Android client." It never hit Trending, got no press, and nobody on X talked about it. Here's how it spread inside a small niche, and what you can take from it.

### A 1-minute 30-second film

On Oct 21, Prism shipped version 1.7. The top of its release page is a 1-minute 30-second "film": lyrics bold up one word at a time as they're sung, and the background colors are pulled from the album cover. Underneath, a line of text: "a complete redesign, and a set of features that run on your phone. There's still no Prism server, no required account and no telemetry."

The same day, the author posted on r/YouTubeMusicClients with a title that listed features in one go: "Prism 1.7 is here! This a complete redesign with new features like karaoke, a harmonic DJ mode, Made for you mixes, song recognition, casting and a lot more!"

Three days later it started climbing. Going by the daily records, 10-22 was 81 stars, went from 10-24 to 106,10-25 to 141, and the +35 single-day gain is the biggest it has had so far. We can't pull the post's likes or exact posting time, so whether this whole wave came from that post is unverified; but the timing lines up.

### What it is

A free, open-source (GPL-3.0) YouTube Music Android client written in Kotlin and Jetpack Compose, distributed only as an APK and not on any app store. The first line of the README reads "Your music, refracted." The selling points are stated plainly: word-by-word lighting lyrics, recommendation playlists generated on the phone, no ads, no tracking.

The feature list is long, essentially moving Spotify and Apple Music's signature features over one by one:

- **Sing** : removes the original vocals on the phone (the first download is a model of about 50 MB), with pitch shifting, so it works as karaoke.

- **DJ mode** : sorts the queue by key and tempo, then beat-matches one song into the next.

- **Made for you** : Daily Mix, Release Radar, Smart Shuffle, and "forgotten old songs," all computed on the phone.

- **Replay / Rewind** : a listening year-in-review modeled on Spotify Wrapped.

- There are also 10 more lyrics sources, Shazam-style song recognition, casting to Chromecast and DLNA, sharing playlists with friends by QR code, Android Auto, a TV app, a lock-screen player, and RSS podcasts.

The author lists in the Credits where each idea came from, and states that the art, fonts, and code were not copied from other projects. It isn't a reskin of the InnerTune or Metrolist family; it was written from scratch.

### Why it surfaced in small circles

**Users were already looking for the next one.** Third-party YouTube Music client users are people who keep having to move: YouTube changes its APIs, projects go dormant, and fights between developers drive them out. In August 2026, ArchiveTune used a DMCA takedown to get OpenTune pulled from GitHub, and the veteran Metrolist was said to have entered maintenance mode. When Prism appeared in October, people in that subreddit were asking "which one are you using now?" Whether users actually migrated from those two is an inference; there's no direct evidence.

**It moved fast enough that users felt the author was listening.** In 33 days the author made 700+ commits. The second-highest contributor on the list is claude (33 commits), and the recent commits end with "Co-Authored-By: Claude." The UI was translated into 31 languages by Claude too. Across 52 releases, the 1.7.x line went from 1.7.0 to 1.7.9.3 in just 10 days. The release notes tag items one by one with "(Reddit)": playback speed and pitch changes (Reddit), a playback queue you can batch-edit (Reddit, #159), and turning off Prism from the notification bar (Reddit). If someone mentioned something on Reddit, it showed up in an update a few days later, with the source credited.

**The packaging looks like a commercial app.** The README has not a single line of architecture notes, just screenshots, GIFs, and three installation steps. After installing, the home screen shows an update banner you can tap to upgrade, and the TV version installs by entering a numeric code in Downloader. So each new release quickly picked up over two thousand downloads: 1.7.5 got 2,723 downloads, 1.7.8 got 2,710, and 1.8.1.1 got 2,435 (GitHub Releases, 11-06). Stars are only about a tenth of the download count, so the people actually using it far outnumber those who starred it.

Once word of mouth reached a certain level, some people got suspicious. Under another comparison thread, someone wrote: "I thought this subreddit is just biased on Prism, some kind of bot marketing. But I take that back… It is the best client on Android." There is no evidence of sock puppet posting.

### Where users come from

| Timeline | What happened | Metric |
|---|---|---|
| 10-04 to 10-11 | Library built, not yet open source, several releases a day | Single-digit downloads per release |
| 10-12 | 1.5.10 announces open-sourcing under GPL-3.0 | 693 downloads for this release |
| Around 10-15 | "Prism Update! Version 1.6.5" post appears on r/YouTubeMusicClients | 45 stars at 10-16 |
| 10-21 | 1.7 major redesign, 1:30 film, posted on Reddit | 81 stars at 10-22 |
| 10-24, 10-25 | Star peak | +25 and +35 in single days |
| 10-28 | The community-maintained comparison gist "YouTube Music clients on Android" added it, and that same day it was written up as "For the best experience use Prism" | 209 stars at 10-28 |
| 10-29 | Ranked #6 in weekly growth in the Music players category on Upstar | — |
| Last 7 days | 10 to 20 stars per day | +101, with the first 7 days at +170 |

Daily star counts come from the daily records (starting 10-16); download counts come from GitHub Releases (11-06).

Two points are worth noting: the comparison gist only added it on 10-28, after the 10-24 peak, so it amplified word of mouth rather than sparking it; and outside Reddit it had almost no channels: no HN, no X, no F-Droid, and it never reached GitHub Trending.

### Where the ceiling is

Looking at the whole category, Prism is mid-pack. The real hit of the same period was BitChord: created in August 11, styled after Apple Music's aesthetic, now at 5,954 stars, adding over a thousand a week, 16 times Prism's count. Prism's player credits name BitChord as an inspiration.

| Project | Repo created | star(11-06) | What it sells |
|---|---|---|---|
| Metrolist | 2023-08 | 14,045 | Stable, large community, veteran InnerTune family |
| SimpMusic | 2023-04 | 12,885 | Cross-platform, on F-Droid, press coverage |
| ArchiveTune | 2025-09 | 8,027 | Metrolist fork, once had OpenTune taken down by DMCA |
| InnerTune | 2020 | 6,141 | The ancestor of this family |
| BitChord | 2026-08 | 5,954 | Aesthetics |
| Echo-Music / Convx / YumaPlayer and others | 2026-07 to 08 | 1,100 to 2,600 | Frosted-glass style |
| Prism | 2026-10 | 363 | Many features, recommendations on-device |

This category has a hard ceiling. Installation means sideloading an APK, it relies on YouTube's private APIs, and every time Google changes them, fixes have to ship overnight (the 1.7.7 notes even say "fixes for changes YouTube made in October"). The legal risk never goes away. The user base is the people in those few subreddits, and it can't break out of that circle.

### If it were you

**C.** Don't build another YouTube Music client. There are dozens of them, most newcomers end up bigger than Prism, and even with this much effort it only got 363 stars. What's worth taking is its playbook, and that playbook only pays off in a category that isn't crowded yet.

**Who it suits** : Android or desktop developers who already use tools like Claude Code and can ship a solid release in a day, and who already hang out in a niche subreddit and know what those users complain about.

**Who it doesn't suit** : anyone hoping to build fame through stars or expecting a thousand stars in a month (this category can't break out). Also those who can't live with "the upstream API can break at any time and a lawyer's letter can arrive at any moment." If you want to make money from it, don't bother: Prism only accepts Ko-fi tips, and open-source clients in this space trade in reputation.

**How to do it** : find a paid big-company app (beyond Spotify and Apple Music, such as podcasts, reading, fitness, or photo albums) and an open-source alternative in a category where users keep switching clients. List the big app's signature features and port them one by one into a free version, all computed locally with no account. The first screen of the README should only show a GIF and "three-step install," and the app should include a polished update banner.

**How to get users** : the main channel is that niche subreddit. Pair every major release with a film of just over a minute and post it with a title that lists the features outright. Treat complaints in the subreddit as your request pool, ship within days, and note "(Reddit)" in the release notes. The second wave comes once community comparisons or recommendation lists add you.

**Deadline** : there's no fixed window, but timing matters a lot: when a veteran project goes dormant, gets taken down, or enters maintenance mode, the few weeks when users collectively look for a replacement are when new projects are most likely to surface. That's the window Prism caught.

**Here's how we'd be wrong:** ① Run the same playbook in a different category and it still can't reach 100 stars in a month. That would mean Prism was riding the YouTube Music client crowd, a group that switches apps often and loves talking about them, and the formula doesn't travel. ② Prism climbs past 1000 stars in the next month, or lands on F-Droid and in the press. Then "feature-heavy" still has room in this niche, and this grade should go up. ③ Google moves hard against this kind of client, either by changing its APIs so they all break at once or by filing DMCA takedowns. Then the category itself is closed.

Where users come from

- **Verified** **Reddit r/YouTubeMusicClients** : the author posted "Prism 1.7 is here! complete redesign…" (post 1xbr9gx). Another comment says "I thought this sub was biased toward Prism, like bot marketing, but I take that back, it's the best client on Android." Release notes repeatedly say "From Reddit".

- **Verified** **Community comparison gist (n-ce)** : 2026-10-28 was added to the gist as "For the best experience use Prism," later than the star peak on 10-24. It acted as an amplifier.

- **Verified** **rapid releases with in-app update banners** : 52 versions in 33 days, each new version driving 2,000+ downloads, with screenshots and video for every release

- Inferred from **Reddit r/foss** : recall cards mention a 1.7 launch post, but the original post wasn't retrieved this time

- Inferred **User migration after OpenTune's DMCA and Metrolist entering maintenance mode** : a timing-based inference with no direct evidence.

## Yigder/Prism: a solo dev plus Claude built an Android YouTube Music client. What got it to 360 stars in 33 days?

> Research date 2026-11-06. Sources: GitHub API (live that day), our github database (repo_profile / repo_day), n-ce's gist revision history, Jina / Exa / Brave search results. Reddit bodies couldn't be fetched (returned 403), so Reddit-related claims rest on search snippets and GitHub references. Those are flagged separately below.

### One line

Prism is a third-party YouTube Music client for Android (Kotlin / Compose, GPL-3.0). It features word-level lyrics, on-device generated recommendation mixes, vocal-removal karaoke, a harmonic DJ mode, Replay/Rewind, Android Auto and TV support. The author Yigder is a solo developer; the GitHub account was created 2020 years ago and has 31 followers. Working with Claude, they developed at breakneck speed: about 700 commits over 33 days and 52 releases.

It took off through: **word of mouth in r/YouTubeMusicClients, a niche subreddit, plus a near-daily release cadence and product-style packaging in the README and release notes** . Users in this circle constantly switch clients, and they were drawn in by the features. Looking at the whole niche, Prism is a mid-tier player. The real hit of the same period was BitChord (2026-08-11,5,948 stars at creation, +1,023 over the last 7 days).

### 1. Data

- Stars: 362, forks 30 (GitHub API, 2026-11-06). Repo created 2026-10-04.

- Our repo (repo_day): 10-16 stars at 45, 81 stars at 10-22. **Growth was 25 and 35 on the two days from 10-24 to 10-25** , with 35 the single-day peak. Afterward it added 10 to 30 per day. Over the last 7 days it gained 101; over the first 7 days, 170. It's slowing. It has never appeared on GitHub Trending (trending_days_any=0).

- Downloads: release assets across 52 releases total **33,335 downloads** (GitHub API). A new version typically gets 2,000 to 2,700 downloads right away; for example v1.8.1.1 got 2,434 and v1.7.8 got 2,710. That means a base of active users in the thousands is upgrading through the in-app update banner. The ratio of stars to actual usage is roughly 1:10 or higher.

- Contributors: Yigder with 668 commits, claude with 33. Recent commit messages end with `Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5`. The README says the translations in 31 languages were "AI (Claude) translated". The third-party site BitsExplorer also tags it "Built with Claude Code: confirmed".

- Upstar data: 2026-10-29 earned "#6 Riser Of The Week" in the Music players category.

### 2. Competitors (a very crowded niche)

| Product | Where | Launched | Scale | How Prism differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Metrolist | Open source | 2023-08 | 14,045 star | The long-running InnerTune line. The most stable, with the largest community. The gist calls it "the most stable," while 2113's comparison says it has entered maintenance mode. Prism is not a fork of it. |
| SimpMusic | Open source / F-Droid | 2023-04 | 12,885 star | Cross-platform, on F-Droid, covered by outlets like Android Authority. Prism ships only an APK. |
| InnerTune | Open source | 2020 | 6,141 star | The ancestor of this line. Metrolist, OuterTune and others descend from it. |
| ArchiveTune | Open source | 2025-09 | 8,027 star | Metrolist line. 2026-08 used a DMCA to take down OpenTune (GitHub dmca repo 2026-08-25-archivetune.md). |
| BitChord | Open source | 2026-08-11 | 5,948 stars, 7 days +1,023 | The biggest hit of the same period, modeled on Apple Music. Prism's Credits explicitly say the player was inspired by it. BitChord sells look; Prism sells feature breadth. |
| Echo-Music / Convx / YumaPlayer / LastWave-Native | Open source | 2026-07 to 08 | 1,100 to 2,600 stars | All part of the 2026 wave of new clients, most selling the Liquid Glass frosted-glass look. |
| InterTune | Open source | 2026 fall | 124 stars, about 25k downloads. | Based on OuterTune. Also a solo dev with frequent releases and its own landing page. |
| Muzza, Flow, Kreate, the ViMusic line, and others. | Open source | Mixed | Hundreds to a few thousand stars. | The gist lists dozens. |
| YouTube Music's official app. | big tech | — | Billions of installs. | Ad-supported, background playback requires Premium. |

Bottom line: this niche has dozens of players, and most of the new ones that appeared this year are bigger than Prism. Prism isn't the first or the biggest. Its position is "the one that was recently name-checked."

### 3. Growth levers and evidence

1. **r/YouTubeMusicClets, a vertical community. This is the main channel.**
    - The author posted "Prism 1.7 is here! This a complete redesign with new features like karaoke, a harmonic DJ mode, Made for you mixes, song recognition, casting…" (post 1xbr9gx, retrieved by both Jina and Brave).
    - 1.7.0 was released on 10-21, and the star peaks on 10-24 and 10-25 come right after, which lines up in time. However, the exact post time and upvote count couldn't be retrieved, so they are **unverified** .
    - Another post, "I maintain the biggest list of YT Music clients on Android…" (1xheq07), has a snippet where someone says: "I thought this subreddit is just biased on Prism, some kind of bot marketing. But I take that back… It is the best client on Android". So Prism was being recommended heavily in this sub, enough that people suspected shilling.
    - Release notes and the README repeatedly say "your requests from GitHub and Reddit" and "From Reddit: …", and issue #154 directly links a Reddit post. The author treats Reddit as a request pool.

2. **A community-maintained comparison gist. This is an effect, not the cause.**
    - n-ce's "YouTube Music clients on Android" (18 stars, 68 revisions) lists Prism as "For the best experience use Prism."
    - The revision history shows Prism was only added on **2026-10-28, and moved to the top pick the same day** , after the 10-24 star peak. n-ce also forked Prism.
    - So the gist amplified word of mouth that was already rolling. It didn't light the fire.

3. **Fast releases and the in-app update banner.** Each of the 52 versions came with screenshots, a demo video (1.7 made a 1:30 "film"), and a plain-language changelog. Every update resurfaced it on Reddit and GitHub, and a single version pulled over two thousand downloads.

4. **r/foss** : the recall card mentions a launch post with 1.7 upvotes, but **I couldn't retrieve the original post, so it's unverified** .

5. **What's missing** : no X presence (0 posts in the last 60 days per x-radar), no press coverage, no HN, no GitHub Trending, no F-Droid. No ads either (open-source APKs don't buy traffic).

### 4. Why it took off

- **The demand is permanent and gets periodically shaken up.** Third-party YTM client users often have to switch because YouTube changes its APIs, projects go dormant, or DMCAs land. From 2026-08 to September, ArchiveTune's DMCA took down OpenTune, and Metrolist entered maintenance mode. Many users lost their main client and went looking in the sub. Prism showed up in October, right in that window. This is a timing-based inference, **with no direct evidence that users migrated from OpenTune** .

- **Feature density is way beyond the competition.** Rival clients usually pitch "no ads, synced lyrics, Material 3." Prism ships all of this at once: word-by-word lyrics from 10 lyric sources, with translations and phonetic readings for Korean, Japanese and Arabic; Sing, which removes vocals locally with Spleeter; a DJ mode that sorts backing vocals; locally generated Daily Mix and Release Radar; Replay/Rewind (a Spotify Wrapped clone); Shazam song recognition; casting to Chromecast/DLNA; Listen Together; a TV app; a lock-screen player; and RSS podcasts. This is basically **Spotify's and Apple Music's signature features copied item by item into a YTM client** . The Credits even openly list where each idea came from.

- **Iteration speed from AI assistance.** One person shipped 52 versions in 33 days, with about 700 commits. Requests from Reddit went live within days, and the release notes name them "From Reddit." Users feel the author is listening to them, and that's how the word of mouth snowballs.

- **Written from scratch, not forked.** The Credits say plainly: "doesn't copy artwork, fonts or code from other apps." In a niche full of InnerTune and Metrolist wrappers, and one that just went through a DMCA dispute, this makes it look clean and original.

- **Packaged like a commercial product.** Plain-language README, screenshots, demo videos, a pairing code for the TV app via Downloader, and in-app update banners. That keeps the install barrier low.

### 5. Differentiation

The differentiator is **breadth of features, plus recommendations that run locally** : Mix, Replay and recommendations are all computed on the phone, with no server and no tracking. That speaks directly to people who want the Spotify experience without paying and without being tracked.

That's why Prism got pushed as the "best experience" in this sub. But it's not a moat that keeps others out: these features can be copied quickly with AI, and at the same time BitChord got 16x Prism's stars on aesthetics alone. Prism's growth came from the product plus niche community work. Its star ceiling is capped by the category (sideloaded APKs, a gray area) and by the fact it never broke out of the niche.

### 6. Visibility and copycats

- **Visibility: it's buzzing in small circles.** It's only discussed in niche subs like r/YouTubeMusicClients and r/foss, and in a gist with 18 stars. No media or big X accounts have covered it. Revenue is only Ko-fi tips, and no figures have been published.

- **Copycats:** I haven't found anyone cloning Prism specifically. Search results show ordinary forks such as n-ce/Prism and Zer0xDev/Prism (Zer0xDev even submitted code to it).
    - The same sub has an app called Auralis, pitched as "word-by-word lyrics and playback handoff," which overlaps heavily with Prism. I couldn't find that repo on GitHub, so whether it's a copycat is **unverified** .
    - The whole category is already a pile of clones imitating each other.

### 7. Takeaways

- "Feature-list transplanting": systematically moving the signature features of paid incumbents (Spotify, Apple Music) into a free, open-source alternative, and openly stating the sources in the Credits.

- Using AI to ship 50 versions in a month. Each release comes with screenshots and videos, plain-language notes and a "From Reddit" credit, treating a niche subreddit as both a request pool and a distribution channel.

- The install and update path is made as smooth as an app store: in-app banners, TV installation with a pairing code, and logging into the TV from the phone.

### 8. Uncertain

- The Reddit posts' upvotes, comment counts and exact publish times couldn't be pulled (403), so the source of the 10-24 traffic spike is **unverified** .

- Someone raised the question of "bot marketing," but I have no evidence of sockpuppets upvoting posts.

- That users migrated from OpenTune (DMCA'd) or Metrolist (in maintenance mode) is only an inference.

- These clients depend on YouTube's private APIs. If Google changes the API or legal steps in, the project could stop working at any time.
