Tried it on my own floor plan, 8 min: how house-plan-designer handles the step floorplan-3d doesn't
What it is A Skill you install into Claude Code or Codex. Give it a floor plan and it generates a renovation-design web page that opens with a double-click, with 3D walkthroughs, plumbing and electrical layouts, quotes, and construction drawings.
Why it took off After floorplan-3d was pushed by big accounts, everyone wanted to "swap in my own floor plan," and this does exactly that step with an agent. Add a hands-on post cross-posted to multiple platforms and three major updates in one month, and stars climbed in waves.
CHow you could follow it Stop building floor-plan tools and learn the playbook: watch for the next freshly viral demo that only shows sample data, use an Agent Skill for the "swap in your own data" step, or port it to English floor plans or another industry.

house-plan-designer is a Skill for agents like Claude Code and Codex: feed it a floor-plan image, say one sentence, and it returns a renovation-design web page you can open with a double-click. It hit 31 stars in 359 days, a tenth of its predecessor floorplan-3d, but its fork rate is high, growth is steady, and every rise has a traceable cause. What's worth learning here is the playbook; the floor-plan topic itself is already crowded.
Oct 23, a three-bedroom two-bath
On Oct 23, Sspai published "Has home renovation gotten a 'less heartburn' version? I tested this open-source AI project on my own floor plan." The author, "熊猫不是猫" (Panda Is Not a Cat), normally writes a NAS column. This time he gave Codex the floor plan of his three-bedroom, two-bath home and said only two things: first "install this skill," then "turn this floor plan into a renovation-design web page."
Codex set up the dependencies and checked the browser on its own. 8 After a few minutes, he had an HTML file of about 1.4MB and opened it in Chrome: 9 rooms, 60 pieces of furniture, a net interior area of 120.47㎡, with a switch to 3D bird's-eye view and first-person walkthrough, the plumbing and electrical points on their own layer, and a quote section that produces a bill of quantities from the plan. His verdict: "kind of like Beike's VR home tours."
The same article ran on Smzdm the day before, and the same week it appeared on Tencent Cloud Developer Community and Zhihu columns. The repo's star counts those days: 10-22 was 80, 10-24 was 147.
What it actually does
The repo was created Oct 6. The author ZWD11 has only this one public repo and 17 followers. The README's first line: "One floor-plan image (or one CAD drawing), one sentence, and the agent restores it into a renovation-design web page you can directly design in 2D / 3D."
The work is split up: the model reads the drawing, scripts measure walls, add doors and windows, and place furniture, then the result is overlaid on the original image to check it, and finally packaged into an offline HTML file. It does more than good-looking 3D:
- Outlets, lighting, network cables, hot and cold water, and drainage 5 types of piping are laid out automatically, claimed to follow national standards, with switches placed on the handle side of the door and not behind it, per construction convention;
- It can export national-standard DXF construction drawings and calculate quantities and quotes, with editable unit prices;
- Before delivery, it automatically runs three cross-checks: walls, dimension chains, and furniture placement;
- Later it added office floors, recognition of black-background CAD screenshots, suspended-ceiling light strips, and ray-traced rendering.
One caveat: the generated designer is compiled, and the source (TypeScript + Vite + three.js) isn't in the repo. Someone has already asked about it in the issues.
Why it took off: someone had already educated the demand
In Sep 29, wy51ai/floorplan-3d launched: a single-file 2D/3D floor-plan designer that looks good and supports walkthroughs. On Oct 1, GitHubDaily pushed it on X, getting 38.1k views and 592 bookmarks, and then a wave of Chinese sites reposted it, bringing it to 3,582 stars by 11-06.
But its floor plan is a sample hardcoded in the code. The README itself says "change a few sets of room and wall data to swap in your own," which for most casual viewers amounts to "you can't swap it." So the first reaction after watching was almost always: how do I put in my own home?
5 days later house-plan-designer created its repo, doing precisely that step, and handing it to an agent. The author never said it was inspired by the earlier project, so this is an inference, but the timeline and positioning line up. Layer on this year's Claude Code / Codex Skill craze in Chinese circles, and "install one Skill, drop in one image" is inherently easy to share.
How the stars grew
| Timeline | What happened | star |
|---|---|---|
| 10-06 ~ 10-17 | Built it, almost nobody looked | By 10-17, only 27 |
| 10-20 ~ 10-24 | 10-22 big update (automatic plumbing and wiring layout, ray tracing); Panda's hands-on review 10-22 on 什么值得买, 10-23 on sspai, etc. | 4 days, from 34 to 147 |
| 10-28 | Big update: office/commercial floors, DXF reconciliation | +35 in a single day, the biggest day |
| 10-30 | On linux.do someone asked, "Is there a good interior design platform, or a skill?" A reply recommended this one | +7 ~ 15 per day |
| 11-02 ~ 11-05 | Big update: cross-platform, black-background CAD screenshots, three reconciliations | +17 ~ 26 per day |
Numbers come from GitHub's daily star records (since 10-17). 11-06 has 359 stars and 67 forks; the fork rate is close to 19%, while similar showcase repos usually sit at 5–10%. That suggests many people are actually running it on their own floor plans. Requests in the issues like "my home needs central AC" and "I want to swap the tile textures" back this up.
It hasn't made GitHub trending (the repo was under 60 days old), and only reached #24 on Trendshift's HTML language chart at 10-23. I found no big X account reposting it; GitHubDaily and Ruan Yifeng's weekly haven't covered it; I found no videos on Bilibili, Xiaohongshu or Douyin (not finding them doesn't mean they don't exist). Whether Panda's post was organic or sponsored is unverified.
The pattern is clear: one hands-on review plus fresh screenshots and a changelog with each major update, and each one brings a wave of stars.
Who it's competing with
| Project | Launched | Scale | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| wy51ai/floorplan-3d | 9-29 | 3,582 stars / 748 forks, +7 over the last 358 days | Sample floor plans are hardcoded, no image reading |
| Kujiale Smart Design Skill | 2026 (API Beta) | Platform-level | Upload a floor plan, chat, get a design, but it runs in Kujiale's cloud and bills through your Kujiale account |
| egmalt/house-planner | 10-01 | 372 stars | Self-hosted, you draw the floor plan by hand, no image reading |
| interior-design-master | October | Threads post, 10.7k views | Floor plan + style produces 3D renders, but no plumbing/wiring or construction drawings |
| SkillHub interior-design-assistant, JasonZhu's floor plan → 3D prompt | October | Not verified | One is a mostly text-based plan, the other outputs a one-off walkthrough page |
| Sweet Home 3D, react-planner, 3D Home, Zhihu floor plan tool | Early on | Open-source ones sit at a few hundred to a thousand-plus stars; commercial apps are much bigger | Traditional hand-drawn tools |
"Floor plan → 3D" is a crowded topic on October, all riding the floorplan-3d wave. house-plan-designer is the only one that turns the full workflow—read the image, measure walls, self-check, lay out plumbing and wiring, output construction drawings—into a Skill. I haven't seen anyone copying its approach.
It's this deep, so why does it have only a tenth of the stars?
floorplan-3d gets people to star it with a single animated GIF. house-plan-designer's benefits—accurate wall measurements, code-compliant wiring, DXF files a construction crew can use—only become obvious after you run it yourself. Most people who land on the repo never do.
So its depth has earned high fork rates and good reviews from testers, but not star counts. If you want stars, impact works better than workflow depth. If you want proof that people are actually using it, depth is what matters. That's the most important takeaway from this project.
If it were you
Verdict: Copy its approach, but don't build another floor plan tool. "Floor plan → 3D" is already packed: floorplan-3d took the bulk, and house-plan-designer made it engineering-grade with 105 acceptance checks yet only got 359 stars. The Nth entrant is unlikely to beat it.
Who it suits: Indie devs who can write Agent Skills, who know the industry in real detail (like the national-standard wiring and switch placement here), and who can ship a solid update every week.
Who it doesn't suit: Anyone hoping for thousands of stars overnight from a single demo, or anyone unwilling to write a lot of validation scripts and who just wants a prompt. That layer already exists for free.
How to do it: Watch for the next "pretty but only shows sample output" demo that a big account like GitHubDaily boosts, and build the step it's missing: "swap in your own." Hand it to an Agent: the model reads the input, scripts handle measuring, validation and packaging, and the output is a file that opens on double-click. You could change the domain (circuit diagrams, garden layouts, booth setups, PCB, family trees), or change the audience: build a version that reads English floor plans, uses feet, and outputs US-style formats. I haven't verified whether anyone has done the English-speaking version, so search first before you start.
How to get users: Find a reviewer with their own column and have them run it on their own real data. Publish one article on sspai, 什么值得买 and Zhihu at the same time. Pair each major update with a fresh set of screenshots and a changelog. Answer "is there a good xx skill?" threads on developer communities like linux.do.
When to move: Build the repo within 1–2 weeks after the original demo goes viral. house-plan-designer came only 5 days later, right when people were asking "how do I swap in my own house?"
Signs you've misread it: ① house-plan-designer organically gains over 2,000 stars within a month, which would mean depth can also earn stars and the floor plan niche still has room. ② Someone ships an English floor plan Skill that passes a thousand stars in a month, which would mean the audience-swap route is open and worth jumping on right away. ③ The author takes down the designer source and turns it into a paid product, and the forks stop updating, which would mean this kind of Skill's heat is just a passing wave.

ZWD11/house-plan-designer: why it works
Give it a floor plan image (or CAD drawing) plus one sentence, and an Agent (Claude Code / Codex, etc.) rebuilds it as a single-file HTML interior design tool that opens on double-click and works offline: 2D layout, 3D walkthrough, automatic plumbing and wiring layout, quantity takeoff and quoting, and national-standard DXF export. Takeaway: "floor plan → 3D designer" is a crowded topic in 2026-10, kicked off when floorplan-3d was boosted by GitHubDaily at the end of September. house-plan-designer is the only open-source project in this wave that packages the full workflow (read image → measure walls → self-check → route plumbing/electrical → output construction drawings) as an Agent Skill.
III. Growth levers: where users come from
- Riding the floorplan-3d demand wave (timing): GitHubDaily 10-01 posted about wy51ai/floorplan-3d on X (38.1k views, 592 bookmarks, x.com/GitHub_Daily/status/2105651520557678731); then lvruan, itimo, appmiao, Sina Weibo, go176, hqyman and others reposted it from 10-01 to 10-20. Many people's first reaction was "how do I use this for my own floorplan?" house-plan-designer 10-06 built its repo around exactly that question. The original author never said they were inspired by it; this is an inference, but the timeline and product positioning line up.
- 中文测评文章同时发多个平台(已证实,最大的一波):作者「熊猫不是猫」(专栏「NAS原来这么有用」)写的《装修也有"不烧心"版本了?这个开源AI项目,我拿自家户型试了试》,10-22 发在什么值得买(post.smzdm.com/p/am9399wv),10-23 发在少数派(sspai.com/post/117175)和腾讯云开发者社区(developer.cloud.tencent.com/article/2767784,282 阅读),还转到了知乎专栏(zhuanlan.zhihu.com/p/2097008301384929892)。
- Star growth from major updates (confirmed, timing matches): the README changelog lists three big updates: 10-22 (automatic plumbing/electrical routing, ray tracing), 10-28 (office/commercial floors, DXF reconciliation), and 11-02 (cross-platform, black-background CAD screenshots, three reconciliation checks). The three days around them line up with the 10-22/23 and 10-28 (+35, the single highest day) and 11-03 to 11-05 star-growth segments.
- Community word of mouth (confirmed): linux.do thread 10-30 "Is there a good interior design platform or skill?" got 289 views and 12 likes, and a reply recommended this repo (linux.do/t/topic/3098556).
- Skill directories and aggregators (confirmed, small scale): seoagent.com skill-grader gave it an A grade (ranked #69 of 257), with a LinkedIn repost 10-19; indexed on Trendshift.
- The author's own blog: the blog focuses on introducing trending GitHub projects, but the homepage has no post about this project. On X (local x-radar corpus) I found no posts mentioning it and no big-account reposts.
No evidence found of paid promotion, TikTok, Xiaohongshu, or Bilibili (not finding it doesn't mean it isn't there).
4. Why it broke out
- The demand was already educated by someone else: floorplan-3d picked up 3500 stars in late September, showing that a "single-file HTML floor plan 3D designer" really resonates, but it can only show the sample plan. house-plan-designer solves the "swap in my home" step, handing the hardest work (reading images, editing data) to the Agent.
- Rode the Skill wave: in 2026, Claude Code / Codex Skills were hot in the Chinese community (huashu-design at 17k stars, many "one sentence produces xx" Skills). "Install a Skill, drop in a floor plan" is inherently easy to share.
- Output is visible and actionable right away: the result is a 1.4MB HTML that opens on double-click; the review author got it running with their own floor plan in 8 minutes. The high fork rate and issue requests like "my place needs central AC" show that people really are trying it on their own homes.
- Deep, reads like engineering delivery: not just a nice-looking 3D, but also national-standard DXF, 5 types of pipe routing (referencing GB 50096/50311/50242/50015), switches placed on the door-handle side, three reconciliations (walls, dimension chains, furniture), and 105 acceptance checks. Plumbing, electrical, quotes, and construction drawings, which Chinese renovation users care most about, are all covered. That sets it apart from "one prompt produces a 3D" alternatives.
- Fast and dense updates: three major versions in one month, each with a clear changelog and new screenshots, and each update brought a new wave of stars.
5. Differentiation
Compared with tools where people draw or edit by hand, like floorplan-3d and openPlan3D, it does automatic reconstruction by Agent image reading. Compared with the Kujiale Skill, it offers a local offline HTML + free and open source + editable. Compared with other "floor plan→3D" prompts or Skills, it has an engineered image-reading pipeline (cadvec/analyze/axismap for wall measurement, check.mjs overlay reconciliation against the original image) and construction-grade output (plumbing, electrical, DXF, quotes). This differentiation is what drove its growth: the review article is about "actually running it on my own floor plan", not "a pretty demo". Still, its absolute star count (359) is only about a tenth of floorplan-3d's, which suggests a flashy demo still earns stars more easily than process depth.
VI. Visibility and copycats
- Visibility: it's spreading within niche circles. Evidence: one article each on 少数派, 什么值得买, Tencent Cloud, and Zhihu (same author, same article); one linux.do thread; one Skill grader listing. X big accounts, GitHubDaily, and 阮一峰's weekly newsletter haven't written about it (within the search scope). It has never charted on trending. As an open-source project it doesn't earn money, so there's no public revenue.
- Copycats: I found no forks or renames directly copying it. But several similar "floor plan→3D" Skills/prompts appeared around the same time (interior-design-master, the JasonZhu prompt, SkillHub interior-design-assistant). They look more like riding the floorplan-3d wave than copying this project.
VII. What to take away
- Target a demo that a big account just boosted, and build the step it's missing: floorplan-3d is an "example", this project is "yours".
- Use a Skill to package the heavy lifting: the model reads the image, scripts measure, verify, and package, and the deliverable is one file with zero deployment.
- Serve the real needs of Chinese home renovation (plumbing, electrical, quotes, national-standard construction drawings), not just pretty renders.
- Ship each major update with a new set of screenshots and a changelog to attract review authors and drive repeat sharing.
8. What's still uncertain
- Where the stars came from during the 10-06 to 10-17 cold-start period, and the source of the +16 on 10-20, is unknown.
- Whether the 熊猫不是猫 article was written spontaneously or commissioned is unverified.
- The designer source (TypeScript+Vite+three.js) is not in the repo (issue #4 asks about it too). Whether the author will keep it closed or go commercial is unknown.
- Whether videos are spreading on Xiaohongshu, Bilibili, or Douyin: I found no evidence this time.
- I couldn't get GitHub's stargazer timestamps or referrer data (the stargazer endpoint returned 404, and I hit API rate limits), so how many stars each channel brought can only be inferred from matching dates.
