# Witch-Time: 13 days to bring the Switch-exclusive Bayonetta 3 to PC, 10k downloads, only 242 stars

**What it is** An open-source tool that compiles the Bayonetta 3 you dumped from your own Switch into a native Windows / Linux build, running at 4K, 60 to 120 fps. It's not an emulator, and it contains no game files.

**Why it took off** Nintendo never released a PC version, emulators keep getting taken down, and it landed right as the October AI recompilation wave hit and the predecessor B2recomp had just worked. It shipped first and updated almost daily, and X repost accounts, YouTube tutorials and multilingual game sites kept it moving.

**B** **How you could follow** Don't build a second B3. Pick a game that never came to PC, has a hardcore fanbase, and whose sibling-engine predecessor already has a working runtime. Ship a one-click build within two weeks, write the README as a checklist repost accounts can copy directly, and launch on r/decomps.

Grade B: the playbook is clear and the wave is still running, but good games are being claimed one by one, Nintendo could issue a DMCA at any time, and mid-tier games cap out at a few hundred stars (Witch-Time got 242 stars from 10k downloads). Being talked about in small circles

Data (updated daily) · Repo created 2026-10-24 · 277 stars · 7 days +177

GitHub · stars

Data 2026-10-30 → 2026-11-08 (10 days, 10 observations). Points before 10-28 come from deeply / archive backfill, not every day has one

On the evening of Oct 24, a GitHub account with only 13 followers, Zexyen, created a repo. Three days later it shipped the first working build: take the Bayonetta 3 you dumped from your own Switch and compile it into a native Windows / Linux build at 4K, 60 fps. By Nov 6 it had shipped 21 versions, the installers had been downloaded about 10k times, and it had only 242 stars. Of 324 commits, 244 credit Claude. This piece covers why it took off, why the star count is so low, and whether you can still take this path.

### A post calling for stars

On Oct 28, The Gaming Emporium (@McGroin83), an X account that specializes in reposting PC port news, posted a long thread that opened with:

> 🚨 Bayonetta 3 is being recompiled for PC — with 60 FPS gameplay and 4K resolution support!

Then it listed the points one by one: 60 fps benchmarks (Tokyo and Shibuya stages), 1080p up to 4K, Windows and Linux, controller support, an in-game PC settings panel opened with F1, and the 4K figure was measured on an AMD RX 9070 XT. The last line read "Give its GitHub repository a star to support the developer!" The same day, the YouTube channel ZEROstig posted "Bayonetta 3 Is Being Recompiled for PC!", with 1839 views.

These two posts were essentially the starting point of its visibility. Over the next ten days, game sites in Spanish, Russian, Chinese and English kept covering it, one after another.

### What it is

Bayonetta 3 is a Switch-exclusive action game from PlatinumGames, 2022 years old. The first entry came to PC; the 2 and 3 entries never did. The original Switch version runs at 900p with an unstable frame rate.

Witch-Time isn't an emulator. It translates the game's ARM64 machine code into C on your own computer, instruction by instruction, then compiles a native program that runs on a rewritten "fake Switch system": threads, files, input, sound, with graphics moved from Nintendo's NVN API to Vulkan. The repo includes no game code, assets, keys or Nintendo SDK. That's its line between itself and emulators, which Nintendo has taken down in batches via DMCA.

Using it is simple: download the zip, extract it, run witch-time.exe, pick your game folder, and the launcher compiles it itself, then you play. The compiler (clang + lld) and runtime are bundled, so no dev tools are needed on your machine. The game gets a PC settings page: resolution from 900p to 2160p, FSR 3.1, 60 / 90 / 120 fps, remappable keyboard and mouse, Discord status, and even the in-game storybook that opens the prequel Bayonetta Origins prologue works.

The README itself lists what isn't done: occasional stutter, keyboard and mouse "not yet tested by real people," the 120 fps mode is experimental, and Windows Defender may flag it as a trojan (it's unsigned, and each version is a new file).

### Why this one took off

**Demand was already there, and the emulator route keeps getting shut down.** People have wanted to play B3 on PC at 4K for a long time. 2024 yuzu was shut down after Nintendo sued it, Ryujinx stopped updating, and in 2026 Aug 17 Nintendo took down 401 emulator repos again (pbxscience 10-28). "No keys, runs natively" fills exactly that gap.

**Rode the October "AI recompilation" wave.** Early October, 织梦岛's LASRecomp became the first public Switch recompilation, and the author said Claude wrote nearly all of it. Then came 大乱斗, 猎天使魔女 2, 旷野之息 and 王国之泪. The Verge 10-23 wrote a piece titled "Retro gaming is being overrun with AI". Editors and YouTubers got into the habit: every new one, someone reports on it.

**The predecessor had already paved the way.** K0NL/B2recomp (猎天使魔女 2) 10-17 built its repo, and 10-21 a YouTube video about it got 21.8k views, already saying "next up is Bayo 3". Same engine, same platform. Witch-Time's README opens by stating it follows "the approach and architecture of B2recomp", reusing the runtime, translator and build scripts directly. That's how it became playable in 13 days.

**Almost a new version every day.** From 10-27 to 11-06 it shipped 21 versions. The version numbers media cited went from 0.4.5 up to 0.8.1. Every time media looked back, there was something new to write about, and 12 issues showed people were actually playing and reporting bugs.

### Where users come from

| Timeline | What happened |
|---|---|
| 10-27 | The first release was posted by the author to Reddit's r/decomps (post engagement not retrieved). |
| 10-28 | X repost account @McGroin83 long thread; YouTube ZEROstig, 1839 views; Spanish site pcmrace wrote an install guide. |
| 10-31 – 11-01 | English gamerbrowser and wpnews (headline literally "with Claude"); Russian playground.ru and pixlib. |
| 11-02 | Russian kod.ru covered it alongside Tears of the Kingdom; stars gained +37 that single day, the peak. |
| 11-03 | Gamersky (reposted via NetEase) and ggamen; YouTube Jov's Gaming Lounge install tutorial at 4K/120 fps, 4469 views. |
| 11-06 | playground.ru published another hands-on test. |

Star trend (GitHub, recorded daily): 10-30, then 65,11-02, then 137,11-06, then 219, and shields.io showed 242 that afternoon. No paid promotion was seen. Free open-source has no direct revenue; everything was organic spread through repost accounts, install tutorials and multilingual game sites.

### 10k downloads, why only about two hundred stars

The ratio of downloads to stars is roughly 40 to 1. The people coming are players who want to play the game, not developers. They download, compile, play, and don't come back to star it. How many of the 21 versions were re-downloaded by the same people is invisible from outside, and the real player count is probably well below 10k (inference).

More importantly, in this category stars depend mainly on which game you're porting, not on how good the tech is. Similar projects from the same period (GitHub, 11-06):

| Project | Games | star |
|---|---|---|
| valentderah/totk-pc-recomp | The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom | 5113 |
| Revivedx/SavageWindRecomp | The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild | 3193 |
| peiikai/LASRecomp | The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker | 2149 |
| ssbu-recomp | Super Smash Bros. | 591 |
| K0NL/B2recomp | Bayonetta 2 | 555 |
| Zexyen/Witch-Time | Bayonetta 3 | 242 |
| Coz-0/smo-recomp | Super Mario Odyssey | 68 |
| swaymun/AC-Recomp | Xenoblade Chronicles | 21 |

The technical routes are similar: Zelda at five thousand, Xenoblade at twenty. Witch-Time sits in the middle of this wave.

### Who it's competing with

Shipping first, adding a Linux build a few days later, and having a better launcher took nearly all the traffic for this game. Within one game, who ships first and who finishes wins the traffic. Across the whole category, the game itself decides the ceiling.

### If it were you

**B.** Building a second "Bayonetta 3" now is pointless. What's worth doing is the Witch-Time playbook: pick a game the official side never brought to PC, with a devoted fanbase, on the same engine as a predecessor that was just recompiled. Reuse the existing runtime and ship a "download and play" build within two weeks. The playbook is clear, but good games are being claimed one by one, legal risk can drop at any time, and recompiling a mid-tier game caps star counts at a few hundred.

**Who it suits** : developers who know some reverse engineering and low-level work (ARM64, graphics APIs) and can iterate for long stretches with tools like Claude; ideally long-time players of a specific game who know where it struggles on Switch and what PC players want most.

**Who it doesn't suit** : anyone hoping to earn money from it (it can't and shouldn't be charged for); anyone chasing big star counts without a big IP; anyone who can't handle the project vanishing overnight after a DMCA.

**How to do it** : First check recomp.party to see which Switch games already have a port and which don't. Prioritize games built on the same engine as existing projects (Platinum and a few Nintendo first-party titles have ready-made runtimes you can reuse). The first version has to install in one click: a prebuilt package, bundled compiler, and a graphical launcher, so players never have to set up a toolchain. Put visual upgrades in the in-game menu: 4K, high frame rate, key remapping. Those are what media and YouTube screenshots will use. The first screen of the README should state clearly: "Contains no game files or keys."

**How to get users** : launch on r/decomps; write the README as a checklist that port-repost accounts can copy directly (frame rate, resolution, platform, test GPU); proactively send it to PC-port repost accounts like @McGroin83 and YouTubers who make install guides; ship a new version every day or two to give multilingual game sites a reason to return. Don't treat stars as the only metric. Put a download-count badge at the top of the README, since download numbers are what you can show outsiders.

**Deadline** : this wave is still rising, with more than a dozen new versions on the recomp.party homepage each day. The big-name IPs will mostly be claimed by October, and the remaining good spots probably have only a month or two left (inferred).

**Signs I got it wrong** : ① Nintendo starts issuing DMCAs against AI recompilation projects and takes them down in batches, as it did with emulators. Then this route closes. ② Over the next month, new recomp projects with reasonably big IPs mostly fail to reach 200 stars, meaning the novelty has worn off for players and media. ③ Conversely, if someone makes a clearly better version of a mid-tier game that surpasses the first mover, then the "do what the first mover didn't do well" route is still open.

**Research notes: competitor table, acquisition evidence, full research report**

Competitors

| Name | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs from this one |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LuvAbyss/B3-Express | Open source | late 2026-10 | 48 stars, 354 downloads | Another AI recompilation of the same game, Windows only, targeting 60fps. Its author admits playability and launcher trail Witch-Time, but it got coverage from DSOGaming |
| Switch emulators (Suyu, Citron, Eden forks after yuzu shut down; Ryujinx forks) | Open source | From ¥2018 | Once mainstream, but since 2024 Nintendo has continuously cleared them via DMCA (2026-08 repos taken down 401) | General-purpose, requires keys, not native, limited PC enhancements. Witch-Time covers one game only, native Vulkan, no keys included |
| K0NL/B2recomp | Open source | 2026-10-17 | 555 stars, 17k downloads | Covers the predecessor Bayonetta 2 and is the direct foundation for Witch-Time (lifter, runtime, build scripts). The two are upstream and downstream |
| Zelda recomps like valentderah/totk-pc-recomp | Open source | 2026-10 | 5113 stars (7 day +4824) | Same model but with a much bigger IP, showing recomp star counts depend mainly on the game's IP |
| Official PC version | Other | None | Nintendo and Platinum have never ported Bayonetta 2/3 to PC | The official gap is exactly where the demand comes from |

## Zexyen/Witch-Time: Switch→PC static recompilation of "Bayonetta 3" (Bayonetta 3)

> Research date 2026-11-06. Data sources: our GitHub database (repo_profile / repo_day), GitHub pages (read via Jina), shields.io download badges, recomp.party, YouTube pages, and original media articles (read via Exa/Jina). Reddit originals were blocked by 403, so only search snippets were used.

### One line

Witch-Time used AI (Claude Opus 5.5 credited 225 times in commit history) to turn the Switch-exclusive "Bayonetta 3" into a native PC version. Users supply their own dumped game files, and the AArch64 code is translated into C and compiled to run locally, with graphics configurable up to 4K/60fps. It gained traction because three things stacked: the 2026 October "AI recomp" wave, a well-known game that never came to PC, and the predecessor B2recomp proving the route a week earlier.

### 1. Data

| Metric | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Repo created | 2026-10-24 | Data card |
| First release | 2026-10-27; by 11-06, 21 versions shipped (v0.8.1) | recomp.party |
| star | 10-30 65 → 11-02 137 (single day +37, peak) → 11-06 219; recomp.party 11-06 07:53 scrape showed 232 | repo_day / recomp.party |
| fork / issue | 10 / 12 | Data card |
| **Total release downloads** | **~10k** | shields.io(github/downloads/Zexyen/witch-time) |
| Author | Zexyen, personal account, 13 followers, 11 repos, and this is the only one that got attention | GitHub profile |
| AI involvement | 324 commits, 244 with AI attribution (Opus 5.5 225, Fable 5.1 18) | recomp.party |

Key point: **about 10k downloads but only 219 stars, a ratio of about 45:1** . The audience is players who want to play the game, not developers. They download and leave without starring. Measuring by stars underestimates actual usage.

### 2. Competitors and similar apps

**Same game:**

- **LuvAbyss/B3-Express** : also a native Windows recompilation of Bayonetta 3 v1.2.0, built on ScarletNX, with an NVN→Vulkan renderer and a launcher, and its commits also include Claude account involvement. It has only 48 stars and 354 downloads (shields.io). Its author wrote on r/decomps, "my version plays 9 worse than 10" and "Witch-time's launcher is better than mine" (search snippet). But DSOGaming's 11-06 article "Bayonetta 3 Unofficial PC Port Available for Download" appears to describe B3-Express (it mentions B3-Express's fade effect and PS/Xbox button prompts), not Witch-Time. So the biggest Western unofficial-port news site covered the rival this time.

- **B3recomp post on r/decomps and LuvAbyss/B3** : earlier or concurrent attempts. Search snippets tag them "Made with AI assistance". Small in scale, not verified.

- **Switch emulators** (yuzu was shut down after a lawsuit in 2024, Ryujinx stopped the same year, with forks like Suyu, Citron, and Eden since): they run this game, but users must supply their own keys, and PC enhancements are limited. Nintendo's 2026-08-17 DMCA takedown removed 401 emulator repos (pbxscience 2026-10-28). The emulator route is being squeezed.

- **Official** : Nintendo and Platinum have never released a PC version of Bayonetta 2/3. The first game had a PC version, but the last two did not. That gap is what created the demand.

**Same pattern, same period (GitHub database, 11-06):**

| Project | star | 7 daily installs | Repo created |
|---|---|---|---|
| valentderah/totk-pc-recomp (Tears of the Kingdom) | 5113 | +4824 | 10-29 |
| Revivedx/SavageWindRecomp (Breath of the Wild) | 3193 | +910 | 10-16 |
| peiikai/LASRecomp (Link's Awakening, the first public Switch recomp, written almost entirely with Claude) | 2149 | +203 | 10-08 |
| OpenSmash-Ultimate/ssbu-recomp (Smash Ultimate, one of Witch-Time's ancestors) | 591 | +67 | 10-12 |
| K0NL/B2recomp (Bayonetta 2, the direct foundation for Witch-Time) | 555 | +58 | 10-17 |
| Coz-0/smo-recomp (Odyssey) | 68 | +47 | 10-16 |
| swaymun/AC-Recomp (Xenoblade Chronicles, also a Platinum game) | 21 | — | 10-19 |

The recomp.party homepage had more than a dozen new versions released the same day, most tagged Opus 5.5. Witch-Time sits in the middle of this wave: an order of magnitude smaller than the Zelda projects, and in the same tier as B2recomp and ssbu-recomp.

### 3. Where users come from (timeline)

1. **10-24 built the repo, 10-27 shipped the first release** , **posted to r/decomps** (thread "Witch-Time: Static recompilation of Bayonetta 3"; only the search snippet was visible, the original 403 could not be read).

2. **10-28 on X, the repost account @McGroin83 (The Gaming Emporium)** posted a long thread ending "Give its GitHub repository a star" with the GitHub link. Same day on YouTube, **ZEROstig** : "Bayonetta 3 Is Being Recompiled for PC!", 1839 views.

3. **From 10-29, multilingual game media followed:** Spanish pcmrace.com (10-28/29, with an install guide), gamerbrowser (10-31), reversedwithai/wpnews (10-31, headline literally "with Claude"), Russian playground.ru (11-01,11-06, then a hands-on follow-up), kod.ru (11-02, grouped with Tears of the Kingdom as "AI ports"), pixlib / playerone (11-01), Chinese Gamersky via NetEase repost (11-03) and ggamen (11-03). 11-02 on a single day, +37 stars, was the peak, right after the Russian and English second-wave coverage.

4. **11-03 YouTube, Jov's Gaming Lounge** posted "Bayonetta 3 PC Native Port: 4K-120fps (Witch-Time) Setup Guide", 4469 views; the same day GaMeR SHANTO posted a low-end PC test, 197 views.

5. **It rode the predecessor's momentum:** B2recomp, built on 10-17, and the YouTube video "Video Game Esoterica" with 10-21k views had already teased "Bayo 21.8 ... and 3" in the video. Players who had seen B2 naturally waited for B3. The Witch-Time README states outright that it is "in the spirit and architecture of B2recomp", and DSOGaming's coverage likewise leads with B2 before B3.

6. **The big picture** : The Verge 10-23 "Retro gaming is being overrun with AI", TechSpot 11-02, and XDA 10-23 (Breath of the Wild) all covered this AI recomp wave. Readers have learned that "Switch games now run natively on PC," so next they go looking for the specific game they want to play.

No evidence of paid promotion or paid acquisition was found; as a free open-source project there was no revenue channel to recoup anyway. Growth came entirely from organic content spread: repost accounts, YouTube install tutorials, and multilingual game sites.

### 4. Why it took off

- **The demand was already there:** Bayonetta 3 is a Switch exclusive with no official PC version, and the original on Switch runs at 900p with unstable framerate (the 1.2.0 patch never fully fixed it). Players wanted to play it on PC at 4K/60, while emulators were being taken down by Nintendo round after round.

- **Timing:** The October AI recomp wave (LAS Recomp → B2recomp → ssbu-recomp → two Zelda games) absorbed the attention of media and players. Each new port gave editors and YouTubers a ready-made story to cover.

- **Standing on the predecessor's shoulders:** the runtime, lifter, and build scripts came directly from B2recomp (K0NL), and B2recomp itself was built on ssbu-recomp. Same engine (Platinum in-house), same platform, which is why it became playable within 13 days.

- **AI plus high-frequency iteration:** 10 days, 21 releases, almost a new build every day. Media could see new progress on every return visit (0.4.5 → 0.8.1), and 12 issues show that people were actually using it and giving feedback.

- **Taking it from "runnable" to "easy to use":** prebuilt packages for both Windows and Linux, with clang/lld bundled so no toolchain install is needed; a graphical launcher, an in-game PC settings panel (F1), FSR 3.1, 4K and 60/90/120fps, keyboard and mouse rebinding, Discord Rich Presence, and the ability to open the Origins comic prologue from Bayonetta 3. These are exactly the selling points that YouTube tutorials and media articles kept pointing to.

### 5. Differentiation

- **Versus emulators:** no keys required, no interpreter or JIT, native Vulkan, and graphical enhancements adjustable directly in the game menu. On the legal side it stresses that "the repo contains no game code or SDK", drawing a line from emulators that got hit with DMCA takedowns.

- **Versus B3-Express for the same game:** it shipped several days earlier, supports Linux, has keyboard and mouse, FSR, 120fps and the Origins comic prologue, and iterates faster. The rival's own author admits it is more fun and has a better launcher. The result: 10k downloads vs 354, stars 219 vs 48.

- **Is differentiation the reason?** At the level of "same game", yes. Shipping first plus polish decided that it took nearly all the traffic for Bayonetta 3. But the root cause of its success isn't unique technology; the technology is reused from B2recomp. The root cause is that it **grabbed a game IP with demand that nobody had claimed** . Within the recomp category, differentiation really just means "which game you port": Tears of the Kingdom 5000 stars, Chained Echoes 21 stars, with roughly the same technical approach.

### 6. How visible it is

Already covered by multilingual game media (Spanish, Russian, Chinese, English), with YouTube tutorials and X repost accounts. But it has only a couple hundred GitHub stars and hasn't been covered individually by top sites like DSOGaming (DSO covered B3-Express). Compared with the Zelda ports in this wave, it's "circulating in a small circle": well known among recomp and emulation players, not yet in mainstream or developer circles. Copycats have already appeared: B3-Express and the earlier B3recomp are both porting the same game.

### 7. Takeaways

- Once AI coding has lowered the barrier, "which IP you pick" matters more than "how strong the tech is". Choosing a game with a loyal player base, never officially released on PC, and recently ported by its predecessor means the demand and distribution channels are already in place.

- Reusing the runtime of a same-engine predecessor got it playable within 13 days. Shipping a few days first can capture most of that IP's traffic.

- Packaging "it compiles" as "download and play": prebuilt packages, a graphical launcher, in-game settings. Media and YouTube want screenshot-ready 4K/60 and simple install steps.

- To gauge projects like this, look at release download counts, not just stars (here: 45:1).

### 8. Uncertain

- The score and comment count of the r/decomps launch post could not be read (Reddit 403).

- How many of the 10k downloads come from the same users re-downloading across 21 releases is unclear; the actual number of users may be significantly lower.

- Legal risk: Nintendo has not publicly acted against AI recomp (Microsoft instead opened Xbox Labs). If a DMCA takedown is filed, the project could disappear overnight.

- I could not verify from the HTML which repository the download link in the DSOGaming 11-06 article points to; the judgment is based on the article body.
