# July was roasted on HN for "riding 3Blue1Brown's name to charge monthly fees"; in October the open-source engine got 2550 stars: How ManimGX turns a post into a star using one prompt

**What it is** An open-source math and 3D animation engine: you write it in Manim's Python style, it renders on Rust + GPU underneath, and one prompt is enough for Claude Code to install it itself and produce an animation.

**Why it took off** The launch post landed right as the "make videos with code" wave following Opus 5.5 was peaking. It explained in one line "3Blue1Brown's Manim, rewritten in Rust, 90x faster, built for agents" and included a prompt you could copy and run. Big accounts quoting and reposting it, plus Reddit and multilingual news sites, amplified it again.

**B** **How you could follow this** Find an established Python library that everyone writes but is slow and hard to install, keep its API, swap the core for Rust/GPU, put the full-pipeline speedup, a same-frame comparison image and a one-line prompt you can paste into an agent on the first screen of the README, and include that prompt in the X post.

Grade B: it can reach thousands of stars without relying on fame, so the playbook is worth following. But Manim's position is already taken, and switching to another library would take months of solid engineering. franken_manim, which also rewrote Manim in Rust, has only 27 stars, showing that without both the packaging and the timing, it won't take off. In 2026 July, the two-person team Academa posted a web-based Manim editor on Hacker News and got roasted. In Oct 10 they open-sourced the same engine as ManimGX: same Python syntax as Manim, with the backend rewritten in Rust and GPU, claiming 90x speedups, and explicitly built for AI agents. The author has only 1215 followers on X, yet the launch post got 260k views, and the repo grew to 2550 stars in 27 days. This article covers why it took off, why another project that also rewrote Manim in Rust, with 40 times the author's followers, got only 27 stars, and the steps to follow if you want to build something like this.

### A Show HN that got roasted

The July 29 post was titled "Manim (3Blue1Brown's animation engine) running in the browser, powered by WebGPU", 49 points. Manim is the animation library written by Grant Sanderson, creator of the math-education channel 3Blue1Brown. Nearly every developer has seen videos made with it. The top comments in the thread went like this:

> "So you used AI to port manim to Rust, closed source, and now you charge a monthly fee? Isn't this a joke?" "Worse: it's a paid tool. They're using 3Blue1Brown's code and name to make money."

The product was Academa Studio, $20 or $100 a month, and it had never disclosed any revenue.

Two and a half months later, they had answered the criticism point by point. The engine was open-sourced under MIT. The README had a dedicated section, "Standing on the shoulders of giants", whose first line reads "Grant Sanderson created Manim". The benchmark scenes, parameters, and every run's results sat in their own directory, so anyone could reproduce them.

### What it is

In one sentence: you write Python the way you would for the most common Manim community edition (Manim CE), and a GPU engine written in Rust + wgpu renders the video.

The first screen of the README shows a single number: **a 36.2-second video rendered in 3.08 seconds** . Below it is a bar chart of render times for five engines (ManimGX 3.08 s, original ManimGL 35 s, Manim CE 279 s, Blender EEVEE 601 s), then the same frame rendered side by side in all five engines, plus a row of GIFs: rotating arrows drawing the Fourier series of π, a Lorenz attractor, a Hopf fibration. You don't need to read the docs to see that it's fast and looks good.

Right after that comes the install method. The first option isn't pip, it's a prompt:

```Follow https://manimgx.academa.ai/llms.txt. Install ManimGX, make a 3D animation of the solar system, and open it.```
Paste it into Claude Code, Codex, or Cursor, and the agent installs everything, writes a solar-system animation, and opens it on its own. Other things prepared for agents: `manimgx inspect` produces storyboard images and checks for overlapping or out-of-frame text, so the agent can look at the output and fix it itself. No LaTeX install needed. Chinese text renders directly. All the types are fully annotated.
### How the stars grew
| Date | Cumulative stars | What happened that day |
|---|---|---|
| 10-09 | 31 | Built in 4 days, shared only within the circle |
| 10-10 | 43 | 22:18 UTC the author posted on X, 15 minutes later a Show HN |
| 10-11 | 62 | Jake Fitzgerald (@earthtojake) quote-tweeted it |
| 10-12 | 387 | +325, multiple Reddit subs, plus Chinese and Vietnamese repost accounts |
| 10-13 | 846 | +459, the biggest day |
| 10-14 | 1094 | +248 |
| 10-17 | 1584 | Long-form explainers and YouTube walkthroughs followed |
| 10-28 to 11-06 | 2243 → 2550 | 25–40 per day |
(GitHub daily snapshot, 11-06.)
**X posts are the main engine.** Sina Atalay's post opens with "For 40 years we built GUIs for people, now we build APIs for agents" and ends with that solar-system prompt. It has 11-06:3344 likes, 307 reposts, **5400 bookmarks** , and 260k views, 200 times his follower count. More bookmarks than likes means a lot of people saved it to try it themselves.
**One clear take got a big account to repost it.** The next day, Jake Fitzgerald (7600 followers), who builds text-to-CAD, quote-tweeted it with a single line: "Over the next year, code-generated video will eat video models." It drew 69k views. That line was later lifted directly as a headline by Chinese sites. His repost timing lined up with the peaks at 10-12 and 10-13.
**Reddit and multilingual news sites amplified the second wave.** The author posted on r/manim and r/3Blue1Brown. Afterwards, r/coolgithubprojects, r/foss, and others carried the same headline: "Manim rewritten in Rust and wgpu, 90x faster." Between 10-11 and 10-18, AI news sites in English, Russian, Italian, Korean, and Traditional Chinese covered it, as did NetEase and Sohu. The Korean and Chinese articles cited Reddit as their source.
What didn't work: the Show HN got only 10 points and 3 comments, and the best TikTok repost got 10k views. The author is behind RenderCV (17.9k stars), but the people who build résumés overlap little with people who make math animations, so it's unclear how much that older reputation helped.
### Another Manim rewrite in Rust, why does it have only 27 stars?
The most useful comparison is franken_manim. Its author, Jeffrey Emanuel, has 51k followers on X. He promoted it in Oct 7 and got 19.8k views, three days before ManimGX. To date it has 27 stars.
| Project | What they did | star(11-06) | Where it differs from ManimGX |
|---|---|---|---|
| franken_manim | Manim rewritten from scratch in Rust, no LaTeX dependency | 27 | Not compatible with Manim's Python API, no pitch you can state in one sentence, no prompt to copy |
| AzurIce/ranim | A Manim-style engine written in Rust | 663 | Scenes written in Rust, not pitched to agents |
| manim-web / Wanim | Manim ported to the browser (TypeScript) | 511 / 11 | No Python, no GPU 3D |
| manim_skill, Math-To-Manim, and similar | Teach agents to write original Manim | 1.3k / 2.8k | Still the slow original renderer |
| Manim CE | ManimGX copies its API design | 42k | CPU rendering, painful LaTeX and FFmpeg setup |
| HyperFrames / Remotion | Video written in HTML / React, also for agents | 79k / 71k | Build marketing motion, not 3D and formulas 3 |
The difference isn't the technology, it's the packaging: **compatibility with what people already know how to write + one multiplier you grasp at a glance + results readers can see right away** . franken_manim had none of the three, so its followers didn't matter.
Timing helped too. The author's HN post opened with "After Opus 5.5, making videos with code took off." At that time HyperFrames gained 4100 stars in a week and Remotion gained 2100, but no engine yet specialized in "3Blue1Brown-style" math and 3D video. ManimGX filled that spot.
### Many stars, few users
The stars mostly came from the story and the demos. On PyPI, it had about 7k downloads in the last 2508 days, versus 57k for Manim CE over the same period. ManimGX's volume was about 4% of that. The version has stayed at v0.1.1 since Oct 7, and the last commit was in 10-24. The 90x benchmark was the author's own test on an Apple M4 Pro, with no third-party reproduction yet. There's another trap: the source is MIT, but the published wheels bundle x264, so the overall distribution is GPL-3.0. The README says so itself.
Also, whether open-sourcing the engine brought users to the paid Studio is not visible from outside (my inference: that is the real purpose of the open-sourcing).
### If it were you
**Verdict** : worth trying. You can reach thousands of stars without relying on fame, and this playbook is clearly explained. But the Manim niche is already taken, and it takes months of solid engineering.
**Who it suits** : developers who can write Rust or GPU rendering and can carry a long-established library's API over in full, and who have spent time in that library's community and know where people get stuck when installing it.
**Who it doesn't suit** : anyone hoping to build a wrapper in a week or two and collect stars. Projects that just wrap a skill or MCP are everywhere and stall at a few hundred stars. Also anyone unwilling to spend time on benchmarks and comparison charts.
**How to do it** : find a Python library that "everyone knows how to write but is slow and hard to install". Keep its API, swap the core for Rust/GPU, and make it installable with one pip command and runnable in the browser. Candidates could be drawing, typesetting, flowcharts, or physics-simulation libraries with large legacy user bases (my inference; you'd need to verify which one nobody has done yet). The first screen of the README should have just three things: a full-pipeline speedup multiplier from startup to output, one side-by-side comparison of the same frame, and one prompt that can be pasted into Claude Code. Add a good llms.txt and a command that lets agents check their own output.
**How to get users** : post on X and end with that prompt, so people can try it on the spot. At the same time, post "open-sourced" on the original library's own subreddit, and prepare a one-line trend take that a big account can quote and repost. Don't count on HN. Credit the original author up front and open-source the benchmarks, so you don't repeat the July episode.
**When to move** : within a few months (my inference). "Agent-native rewrites of old libraries" still feel new. Once many such projects appear, "N times faster + built for agents" will stop being novel.
**Signs you've misread it** : no more than 10k views in the first week after launch, and no big account reposts it; the original library's maintainers build a GPU backend themselves; or someone has already shipped a rewrite of the same library with a few hundred stars.
## Why academa-labs/manimgx actually runs
> Source: GitHub · Repo created 2026-10-05 · Published 2026-10-10 · As of 2026-11-06:2,550 stars / 186 forks (our GitHub repo; GitHub API that day 2,573)
### Bottom line
ManimGX got its stars from one X launch post. The author, Sina Atalay, had only 1,215 followers, but the post reached 260k views and 5,400 bookmarks. It landed during the "video as code" wave (after Opus 5.5, Remotion and HyperFrames surged). The post made three points in one line: 3Blue1Brown's Manim rewritten in Rust, 90x faster, built for agents. It also included a copy-paste prompt so readers could have Claude Code or Codex make a 3D animation on the spot. Then someone quote-reposted it, and Reddit, the Chinese/Vietnamese/Korean repost accounts, and AI news sites amplified it again. The library powers Academa Studio, a paid product ($20–100 per month). July, Studio posted a closed-source version to Show HN and got slammed for "not open source, riding 3B1B's name." In October they open-sourced the engine, and this time it worked.
Source: our GitHub repo_day table (10-09 to 10-27 from the deeply history, daily snapshots from 10-28).
- PyPI (pypistats.org, excluding mirrors): roughly 14,900 downloads total from 10-07 to 11-05. The peak was on 10-12 (1,384), and after that 200–1,100 per day. Last 7 days: 2,508 downloads, while Manim CE (`manim`) had 57,400 over the same period. ManimGX is about 4% of that.
- npm `manimgx` (browser build): 30 downloads in the last 1,155 days (api.npmjs.org).
- Version stuck at v0.1.1 (10-07), with no new releases since. Last commit on 10-24. Contributors are basically just the two founders: sinaatalay with 109 commits, apoogdk (Abdullah Geduk) with 99.
- No sign of star-buying: fork/star ratio is about 7.3%, consistent with other new repos of this size. The star curve lines up with the timing of the X and Reddit spread.
### 2. Competitive landscape
ManimGX sits where two circles overlap: the Manim ecosystem (math animation), and the "video as code / video engine for agents" category that took off over the past 2026 year.
| Product | Type | Launched | Scale | How ManimGX differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3b1b/manim(ManimGL) | Open source | 2015 | 96,169 star | Grant Sanderson's original, uses OpenGL, painful to install. ManimGX self-tests 11.5x faster. |
| ManimCommunity/manim(Manim CE) | Open source | 2020 | 42,268 stars; about 57k PyPI downloads a week | ManimGX copies its API directly. CE renders on Cairo/CPU and needs LaTeX and FFmpeg installed. ManimGX self-tests 90x faster and installs with one pip install. |
| heygen-com/hyperframes | Open source (HeyGen) | 2026-03 | 79,455 stars, +4,109 in the last 7 days | Writes video in HTML and also pitches itself as "for agents." Focused on marketing and motion graphics, not 3D or math typesetting. |
| remotion-dev/remotion | Open source plus commercial license | 2020 | 71,001 star | Built with React for video, rendered via headless Chrome; weak at 3D and formulas |
| motion-canvas / revideo | Open source | 2022 / 2024 | 19.7k / 4.2k star | Animations written in TS that run in the browser. Its API is not Manim's. |
| AzurIce/ranim | Open source | 2024-11 | 663 star | A Manim-style engine also written in Rust, but scenes are written in Rust and it is not compatible with the Python API. It didn't play the agent card. |
| maloyan/manim-web | Open source | 2026-01 | 511 stars (2026-02 Show HN, 140 points) | Manim ported to TypeScript to run in the browser. No Python, no GPU 3D. |
| Acfboy/Wanim | Open source | 2026-09-28 | 11 stars (10-29 Show HN, 4 points) | Browser version of Manim, marketed on being only 1/20 in size. Almost no one noticed. |
| Dicklesworthstone/franken_manim(Jeffrey Emanuel) | Open source | 2026-07-20 | 27 stars. The author has 51k followers on X, and that 10-07 post got 19.8k views. | Also a from-scratch Rust rewrite of Manim, with no LaTeX dependency, shipped three days before ManimGX. It doesn't use Manim's Python API and has no install path or agent angle, so it didn't take off. |
| adithya-s-k/manim_skill, manim-mcp-server, Math-To-Manim, Nous Research Hermes' Manim skill | Open source / agent skills | 2025–2026 | 1.3k / 657 / 2.8k star | Teaches agents to write original Manim code, which still renders slowly. ManimGX swaps out the underlying engine and also adds an inspect step for checking storyboards. |
| Academa Studio (in-house) | Web SaaS | 2026-07-29 | Show HN 49 points; $20/$100 per month | A browser editor plus an AI agent built on the same engine. ManimGX is the open-sourced part of it. |
| Blender | Other | — | — | Can do 3D but is heavy. ManimGX self-tests 18.7x faster than Workbench. |
**Bottom line** : plenty of tools can make "math / 3D code videos." Only ManimGX meets all of these at once: compatibility with the Manim CE Python API most people already know, dozens of times faster on GPU, one pip install with no LaTeX, and llms.txt plus self-check tools built for agents. The closest rival, franken_manim, shipped three days earlier but had no one-line pitch and no paste-ready prompt.
### 3. Where users came from (growth tactics)
1. **X launch post, verified, the main engine.** @sinaatalay posted at 2026-10-10 22:18 UTC: 3,344 likes, 307 reposts, 5,400 bookmarks, 260,315 views (api.fxtwitter.com). The author had only 1,215 followers, and views were 200 times his follower count, so the reach came from others sharing it. Bookmarks outnumber likes, which suggests people saved it to try later. The copy reads: "For 40 years we built GUIs for humans. Now we build APIs for agents," followed by "Paste this into your favorite coding agent: Follow …/llms.txt to make me a 3D animation of the solar system."
2. **Confirmed by a big account quote-tweeting it.** @earthtojake (Jake Fitzgerald, author of text-to-cad, 7,609 followers)10-11 quote-tweeted it with a single line: "code-as-video will devour video models over the next year". 1,062 likes, 68,710 views, 901 bookmarks (fxtwitter). The line was later repeated on Chinese sites as a headline (bittide's "Video-as-code is starting to devour video models"). His post lines up with the star-growth peak for 10-12 and 10-13.
3. **Show HN, verified, minimal impact.** The Show HN by 10-10 got only 10 points and 3 comments (HN Algolia). HN was not a source.
4. **Reddit, posts verified, engagement not confirmed.** The author posted "Open Sourcing ManimGX" in r/manim and r/3Blue1Brown. Later posts appeared in r/coolgithubprojects, r/foss, r/BestGitHubRepos, and r/ArtificialInteligence, all with the same title: "Manim, rewritten in Rust and wgpu, now 90x faster." Korean AI Briefing and bittide both credited Reddit as the source on 10-13. Reddit blocked our scraping, so no scores were captured.
5. **AI news sites and multilingual reposts, confirmed, amplified the second round.** Between 10-11 and 10-18, tau-home, bitroot, eraofminds, reveneau, xnews, explainx.ai, frontiernow, the Russian technobrother, the Italian cosmonet, the Traditional Chinese InferNews, the Korean devotd, NetEase and Sohu all covered it. Chinese X big account @yupi996 (programmer 鱼皮, 35k followers) posted, but got only 2,901 views 10-12.
6. **短视频,已确认,量小。** TikTok 上 @github.signals(2.6 万粉丝)10-11 发的视频 1 万播放;越南号 @cunghocainha 两条共约 2,800 播放;官方号 @academa.ai 10-08 预热,237 播放。另有 YouTube 讲解视频、Instagram Reel、Facebook 搬运(TikHub,Jina 搜索)。
7. **Founder background, partly verified.** Sina Atalay wrote RenderCV (17.9k stars). He is also a Princeton PhD student (on leave) and a former CERN technical student. The team previously ran an "LLM-generated calculus course" that hit HN twice (42 and 5 points), July Studio hit HN (49 points), and August Academa hit HN (30 points). So developers have some familiarity with them, but RenderCV users and Manim users overlap little, and the effect of this background is unverified.
No paid acquisition, star-buying, or sock-puppet account network found.
### 4. Why it took off
- **Timing.** The HN post says: "Video as code took off with the Opus 5.5 release." At the same time, HyperFrames gained 7 stars in the past 4,109 days, and Remotion gained 2,153 (our database). "Let agents write code to make videos" was a hot idea. ManimGX was the first engine to put "3Blue1Brown-style math and 3D video" into that story.
- **Borrowing a name everyone knows.** Manim and 3B1B are already HN staples (past posts scored 905, 669, 576, and 434 points). ManimGX's own HN post got only 10 points, but the "Manim, 90x faster" pitch spread well on Reddit and news sites.
- **One number and one comparison chart.** The README's first screen reads "36.2 s video, 3.08 s render," with a bar chart comparing five engines on the same frame, plus a row of GIFs (Fourier series drawing π, the Lorenz attractor, Hopf fibration). Readers can see it's fast and the visuals look good without reading the docs.
- **Try it on the spot.** The post includes a prompt readers can copy into Claude Code; one sentence generates a 3D solar system animation. llms.txt spells out the install steps, so the agent can install it itself. The install barrier drops to zero, and the bookmark count (5.4k) is higher than the like count (3.3k).
- **Features built for agents.** `manimgx inspect` outputs a storyboard, checks for text overlap and out-of-frame content, so the agent can check and fix its own work. No LaTeX install is needed, and Chinese text renders (verified by @yupi996). Full type annotations mean agents are less likely to write broken code. These are design choices aimed at agents, not just marketing copy.
- **7 months of engineering, plus a fix for the last failure.** When July Studio launched its closed-source version on HN, commenters called it "vibe-copied from Manim and closed-source with a monthly fee" and said it "rode the 3B1B name." In October they switched to an MIT-licensed open-source engine, added a README section crediting Grant Sanderson, and published a reproducible benchmark directory, directly answering those criticisms.
### 5. Differentiation, and whether that's why it took off
The differentiation is this: **it keeps the Manim CE Python API most people already know, swaps the backend for a Rust + wgpu GPU engine (dozens of times faster, real 3D and PBR lighting, runs in the browser), and packages the whole product with agents as the user** : llms.txt, a one-sentence install prompt, inspect self-checks, complete type annotations, no LaTeX install, and `self.say()` to sync animation with voiceover.
This is the real reason it took off, but the parts should be separated:
- "Manim-compatible, 90× faster" is what made people willing to repost. franken_manim is also a Rust rewrite, and its author has 40× as many followers, yet it got only 27 stars. The difference is that ManimGX keeps the API people already write and comes with a comparison chart they can read at a glance.
- "Built for agents" plus "try it right now" is what let it ride the video-as-code wave after Opus 5.5, and why people like @earthtojake reposted it as a trend example.
- Real usage is small: about 2,500 PyPI downloads a week, only 4% of Manim CE's; the version hasn't been updated in a month. The stars mostly reflect "this story and this demo," not an established user base.
### 6. How many people know about it
**It's circulating in small circles and starting to spread.** Evidence: the main X post has 260k views; there are threads on HN and several Reddit communities, a dozen-plus multilingual AI news and aggregator sites, and YouTube explainers; no top-tier tech outlet has covered it, and 3Blue1Brown himself or official Manim community accounts haven't responded (none found). The open-source library is free; the paid Studio is priced publicly ($20/$100 per month), but no revenue is disclosed.
### 7. Copycats
There are no direct ManimGX clones yet (among libraries created after searching "manim" 2026-08, apart from it, none have 100+ stars). Adjacent efforts include two nichr.tech articles suggesting "wrap ManimGX in a SaaS"; Wanim (10-29 Show HN, browser-based Manim), which came after it but was built earlier, so it's a parallel effort; and the Turkish-language Claude skill leodavincs/kalem (11-01,101 stars), a "video skill pack" mixing several engines.
### 8. What others can learn
1. **"Famous library + Rust/GPU backend + one eye-catching multiplier"** : keep the familiar API, replace the backend, and back it with an instantly readable benchmark (end-to-end time from startup to MP4) plus a same-frame comparison chart.
2. **Define the user as the agent** : publish an llms.txt and put a copy-paste prompt right in the launch post, so readers see results immediately in Claude Code or Codex. This most directly turned views into bookmarks and stars.
3. **Give agents a self-check interface** (inspect storyboards and layout checks). This is where "agent-native" tools actually add value today.
4. **Launch a paid SaaS first, then use an open-source engine as the acquisition funnel after the backlash** : after the closed-source launch drew criticism, open the core, credit the original author, publish the benchmark, and repackage the same tech in a form developers want to share.
5. **Time the launch to ride a platform wave** (this time, the "video-as-code" wave after Opus 5.5), and pair it with a verdict-style line that big accounts can quote and repost.
### 9. Still unclear
- The scores and comment counts of each Reddit post (Reddit blocks scraping), and how much of the traffic at the 10-12 and 10-13 peaks came from Reddit vs. X.
- Which big accounts drove the 260k views on the main post. fxtwitter only gives totals of 307 reposts and 68 quote tweets, not the names. Only @earthtojake has been confirmed.
- The 90× benchmark was self-tested on an Apple M4 Pro, with no third-party reproduction. explainx.ai notes the published wheel bundles x264, so the whole thing ships under GPL-3.0 (the source is MIT).
- Whether open-sourcing has brought paying customers to Academa Studio (no public data).
- Whether, after 10-24, there are no commits and no new releases, and the project stalls at "peak at launch."
