# Eleven thousand birds, 1B tokens, 700 stars in a week: Huashu's bird sticker library, and the people who copied it but only got 0 stars

**What it is** An open-source dataset: every living bird species in the world has a sticker in a unified AI style with a white border, along with bird names in 43 languages and data on taxonomy, distribution, and conservation status, plus a free web field guide.

**Why it took off** The author presented it as a showcase of "spending 1B tokens, one person using agents to finish ten thousand images", posting on WeChat Official Accounts, X, and Jike at once. The next day the English aggregator @RoundtableSpace reposted it as "every bird has a sticker", bringing 57K views.

**C** **How you could follow** Stop copying it with a different species. The stickers are now CC BY, so use them directly for things birders need (regional checklists, ID cards, common city birds collections); or open-source the batch-image-plus-review pipeline as a general tool and pitch it to readers you already have.

Grade C: the method is worth learning, but the stars came from the author's distribution with hundreds of thousands of followers, and followers don't get that. Every category that came to mind was taken by copycats within a week, all at 0 to 9 stars. Circulating in small circles

A large Chinese AI-circle creator used Claude Code and Codex to draw a sticker for every living bird in the world, open-sourced it, and got about 700 stars in a week. Good idea, solid execution, but the stars mostly came from his own followers and one English repost. Within a week people copied it for insects, fish, and mushrooms, and each only reached 0 to 9 stars. Below: what it is, where the stars came from, and how to follow it without wasting your effort.

### A white ibis in Sydney stealing a chip

On 2026 Oct 30 afternoon, Huashu (GitHub: alchaincyf, X: @AlchainHust) published the same long post on his WeChat Official Account, on X, and on Jike. The opening lines read: "I've been doing a super-super-super big project lately!!! I'm turning all 11064 of the world's living bird species into gorgeous, uniformly formatted stickers!!!" The next line is the real news: "I've burned through more than 1B tokens. I used up 1 weekly Claude Code limits on the $200 plan, and three weekly Codex limits on the $200 plan!!"

The story starts last December. He lived in Sydney for a while, got hooked on budgerigars, and got bonked on the head in a park by a white ibis chasing chips. Later, while testing his design tool huashu-design 3.0, he had Claude Code generate a prototype bird-watching app. He liked the result and decided to really build it. The app is called 鸣迹 (Mingji, "Bird Trace"), and it looks like a sticker album: each bird you identify gets its sticker pasted in, stamped with a date and city postmark. That design means every bird needs a sticker.

On 28 Oct afternoon, he told Claude Code: "11,227 birds, we're integrating all of them!!!! You can run multiple codex windows in parallel." Remove the 163 extinct species and the remaining 11,064 are the count for this project, with not one left out.

### What it actually is

The repo alchaincyf/huashu-bird-sticker is an open dataset, created on 10-30. Every extant bird species in the world gets one sticker in a unified style on a white border: 11,030 are AI-generated, and 34 are cutouts from real photos. Each bird also has its name in 43 languages, plus taxonomy, range, morphology, conservation status, and IDs in major bird databases. In November the list moved from IOC to AviList, which was unified only 2025 years ago; under the new list the count is 11,011 species. The companion site birdalbum.com is a free web field guide in 15 languages, with one page per species.

He explains the sticker process in detail: reference photos come from iNaturalist and Wikimedia. For obscure birds with no usable photo (453 species), he assembles reference boards and adds a text description. Each time, he sends a 3×3 grid of reference photos for 9 birds to GPT-image in Codex to redraw. A separate agent that doesn't draw scores each image in a blind review, and anything below the bar gets redrawn. The README also lists the 194 images that failed the quality bar, with a `meetsQualityBar` field so they can be filtered out. Every reference photographer is credited individually, and he has promised to take down any image within 7 days if asked.

The license changed once. In the first week the stickers used PolyForm Shield, which explicitly forbade using them for bird-watching, bird-identification, or field-guide products. Bluntly, it was protecting his own 鸣迹. 11-05 he switched to CC BY 4.0, and the next day someone was already using them in their own bird project (yusuftaleb/everybird-stickers).

### Others have drawn every bird before, but they all charged money.

"One picture per bird" isn't new. What's new is that it's free and ready to use directly.

| Who | Format | Scale | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Birds of the World (Cornell) | Web subscription | About 21k illustrations, covering every species and many subspecies | Hand-painted by professional artists, behind a paywall, no redistribution |
| All the Birds of the World (Lynx), etc. | Paper book | 11k+ species, 19,736 illustrations | Print only, no digital license |
| Birdorable | Website + merchandise store | 840 cartoon birds | Hand-drawn, incomplete, relies on selling T-shirts |
| Scans of old field guides from Wikimedia, Audubon, etc. | Public domain | Incomplete | Styles all over the place, not organized by species |
| Merlin, eBird, Picture Bird, etc. | Bird-ID apps | Merlin's US store rating about 114k reviews | Identify birds from photos and sound; don't provide reusable assets |

(official sites, British Birds book review, App Store, 2026-11)

Nobody had put together "all species, one unified style, free to use, with multilingual data" before. The reason is simple: it used to take a team of artists a decade to paint this, and by 2026 one person with a few hundred million tokens can finish it in a week (inferred).

### Where the stars came from: the author's account, one English repost

Daily new stars (Trendshift):

| Date | Added that day |
|---|---|
| 10-30 | +83 |
| 10-31 | +166 |
| 11-01 | +114 |
| 11-02 | +76 |
| 11-03 | +46 |
| 11-04 to 11-06 | +24 to +29 per day |

Over 9 days: +566 stars and +125 forks. Not a single day reached the top 25 on Trendshift, and it never hit GitHub Trending, HN, or Product Hunt. On GitHub it currently sits at 699 stars. 11-06

**Wave one was the author himself.** Huashu's 53 repos have roughly 117k stars combined, he has 13k GitHub followers, and he has projects like nuwa-skill (37k stars) and huashu-design (29k stars). His post was titled about birds, but half the text is about "how to build a project this big with vibe coding while keeping quality up." The readers are mainly AI developers, not bird lovers. The repo's topics even include claude-code and codex.

**Wave two was an English aggregator account.** On 10-31, @RoundtableSpace posted "Someone made a sticker for every bird species alive on Earth," which got 57k views and lines up with the day's peak of +166. The repost caption only highlighted one thing: not one species left out.

The rest is long tail: posts on r/birds and r/coolgithubprojects (scores and comments not retrieved), a Chinese account on Threads reposting it as "someone made stickers for all 11,064 bird species," an Instagram account using "comment 'birding' for free" to collect DMs, reuploads on YouTube Shorts, and a pile of skills and open-source directories auto-indexing it. The author has kept adding content: he made a promo video with his own huashu-motion and posted it again, 10-31 teased that 鸣迹 has been submitted for App Store review, and 11-05 published another post on "how the stickers were made" (6,721 views).

Forks look high, about 18% of stars, but of the 100 forks only 4 have committed code after forking (GitHub, 11-06). Most people just saved a copy, and few actually built something with the data.

### For Huashu, this was actually a weak launch.

Compare with his own two launches in October: huashu-motion added +716 in a single day, and huashu-art-motion added +415 (GitHub daily stars). The best day for the bird stickers was only 166 to 190, and from day 4 on it settled to two or three dozen a day.

The reason is easy to see: his followers came for AI tools. They'll repost and star a bird dataset, but few will actually use it. Bird lovers would use it, but the birding community is already wary of AI-made art, and they aren't his readers.

### Copycats got a handful of stars

Within a week of launch (GitHub search, 11-06):

- hunknownz/intoreal-insect-sticker, created 10-31, "global insect sticker library," with the description copied word for word, 9 stars

- dongsheng123132/fish-sticker, created 10-31, "global fish sticker library," 0 stars; the same person also made insect-sticker, starting with butterflies

- pingping1369/mushroom-sticker, created 11-04, mushrooms, and registered mushroomsticker.com, 0 stars

- ychenzgithub/BirdSticker, created 10-31, used the same stickers to build a bilingual showcase site, 0 stars

Within days, every category anyone could think of was taken, and none of them took off. The pattern is easy to copy, but Huashu's distribution can't be copied.

### If it were you

**Verdict** : C. There's something to learn, but copying it isn't worth much. The valuable part is the method: an authoritative checklist + a unified AI style + an open license, plus a pipeline of finding references, generating, independent review, and blind redraws, with quality problems stated openly. But this project's stars came mainly from the author's hundreds of thousands of followers. The copycats already did insects, fish, and mushrooms, all sitting between 0 and 9 stars.

**Who it suits** : people who already have several thousand real followers in some community, or who are building an app that needs a full asset set and open-source the assets to drive app traffic (which is exactly what Huashu did).

**Who it doesn't suit** : people with no posting channel who are counting on organic GitHub traffic. It never even made trending, and you won't either. Also anyone who just wants to swap in a different species and copy it: butterflies, fish, and mushrooms are already taken, and a second or third version will get even less attention.

**How to do it** , ranked by how worthwhile:

1. **Build a use case it didn't build, rather than another species** . The stickers are now CC BY, so you can use them directly for things like: region-specific birding checklists, bird ID cards for kids, "the 100 birds near you" for a specific city, or printable sticker packs. Credit each image and you're fine. Bird lovers would actually use these, and they'd spread through birding communities more easily, without competing with Huashu for the AI crowd.

2. **If you must start a new category, pick an obscure one that has an authoritative checklist and collectors, but no one has organized its assets** , and match the quality bar: publicly list each image's reference source and review score, and show the ones that failed. Dog breeds, dinosaurs, or a country's plant flora are better bets than butterflies. An "AI, all species" project with no review and no credits will probably get roasted in the relevant hobby community (inferred).

3. **Open-source the pipeline itself** : "how to use agents to batch-produce ten thousand uniformly styled images that pass review" is a general problem. Package it as a reusable tool or skill. Its readers are every developer who needs bulk assets, a much bigger circle than birders.

**How to get users** : tell it to the people you already have. Huashu didn't try to persuade bird lovers; he talked about "how I used agents to finish a project this big," which worked because he had an existing audience. On launch day, prepare one big, easy-to-read collage (hundreds of species in one image) with a one-line headline like "All N species, not one missing." That's exactly the kind of thing English aggregators want to repost, and the day after the repost is when you'll get your most stars. Separately, one page per species in multiple languages is built for long-tail search, and it will only pay off months later.

**When to move: before the window closes** . Category windows are short: copycats showed up within a week, and good categories are probably taken within a month or two (inferred). And the story of "one person and AI made ten thousand images" will stop being novel once many such projects appear.

**What would mean you read it wrong** : (1) a copycat repo with no big account behind it (insects, mushrooms, etc.) passes 500 stars within a month, which would show the topic can earn stars on its own, not just through the author. Raise the rating. (2) After the switch to CC BY, projects citing the stickers multiply, and the original repo climbs back to triple-digit daily stars, which would mean "being cited" works better than posting. Move on the #1 approach sooner. (3) Conversely, if even Huashu's own 鸣迹 app gets little traction after launch, then "open-source assets to drive app traffic" doesn't work so well either.

### One line

It drew a stylistically consistent AI sticker with a white border for every living bird species on Earth (2026 per AviList v11,011; 15.2 per IOC at launch: 11,064 species), added bird names in 43 languages, taxonomy, range, morphology, conservation status, and database IDs, and packaged it all as an open dataset. The stickers were originally made for the author's own birdwatching app 鸣迹; the repo and birdalbum.com exist to funnel traffic to and brand that app.

### Verdict

The repo took off mainly not because birders found it, but because **the author's main accounts pitched it as a showcase of "AI doing a massive project"** . WeChat, X long-form and Jike posted at once, leading with "over 1B tokens, burning through 1 Claude Code runs and 3 Codex runs of the weekly USD 200 quota," plus a methodology on how Vibe Coding finished over ten thousand images with quality. The next day (10-31) the English aggregator account 0xMarioNawfal (@RoundtableSpace) reshared it as "Someone made a sticker for every bird species," 57k views, which drove the fastest star day. The content also had a hook that is hard to copy: the completeness of "not one species missing," plus the visual impact of a uniform style. But overall this was a **weak launch** for Huashu: 566 stars in the first week, far below his October launches huashu-motion (716 stars in a single day) and huashu-art-motion (415 in a single day). From day 4 onward it averaged only 25–30 stars a day and never made trending.

### Growth data

- Trendshift daily data (https://trendshift.io/repositories/327046): 10-30 +83,10-31 +166,11-01 +114,11-02 +76,11-03 +46,11-04 +28,11-05 +29,11-06 +24; over 9 days +566 stars, +125 forks; **it never entered Trendshift's top 25 on any day in this period** .

- Our GitHub repo_day database (snapshot times differ, numbers vary slightly): 10-31 188 stars, 11-01 378 (+190, single-day high), 11-02 484,11-03 571,11-04 616,11-05 646,11-06 674.

- Compared with the author's other launches (repo_day): huashu-motion 10-20 single-day +716, huashu-art-motion 10-10 single-day +415. The bird stickers' peak was only 1/4 to 1/2 of those.

- Fork/star ≈ 18%, which looks high, but of the 100 forks only 4 had a push after forking (GitHub API forks list). Most forks are just bookmarks or backups and should not be taken as evidence that many people are using the data.

### Competitors: who else is doing the same thing

"A picture for every bird species" is not new; previously it was **paid, print, or subscription-based** , or only covered part of the species.

| Competitors | Where | When | Scale | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Birds of the World(Cornell) | Web subscription | 2020 onward (merged in from HBW Alive) | About 21k color plates, covering every species and many subspecies (birds.cornell.edu) | Professional hand-painted field guide illustrations, behind a paid subscription, no redistribution; huashu is free, CC BY, bulk downloadable, with structured data |
| All the Birds of the World(Lynx) / The Complete Birds of the World(Princeton) | Paper book | Around 2020 | 11k species, 19,736 illustrations (British Birds review) | Print books with no digital license; huashu is transparent PNG/WebP you can use directly |
| Merlin Bird ID(Cornell) | iOS / Android | 2013 | US store rating count 113,952 (appstore database, 2026-11) | Free bird ID tool, mainly photos and sounds, provides no reusable assets; it is Mingji's real competitor |
| Picture Bird | iOS | 2019 | US store rating 40,610, best US Top Grossing category rank #69 (appstore database) | Paid photo bird ID, doesn't touch assets |
| eBird / Birda / Shumao / Quekue / Huiyan Birding / Tingniao, etc. | iOS | 2015–2026 | eBird US store rating 829; Shumao (China store, 2026-04) rating 521 | Record and ID tools, none with a uniform-style full-species sticker set |
| Birdorable | Web / merch shops | 2007 | 840 cartoon birds, 1,660 designs (birdorable.com) | Hand-drawn cartoons, only 840 species, earning from T-shirt merch; huashu covers all species and is free |
| Wikimedia Commons / old field guide scans (Audubon, Gould, etc.) | Web / open source | Always present | Incomplete, inconsistent styles | Public domain but uneven in quality, and no well-organized structured data by species |
| Related open-source projects (BirdNET-derived bird collages, e-paper field guides, etc.) | Open source | 2024–2026 | A "live bird collage from your window" with 673 stars, others at tens to 200 stars (similar repos on Trendshift) | They do identification or display, not full-species assets |

**Finding:** the combination of "free, commercially usable, full species, unified style, with multilingual structured data" had not been done before it. Professional field guide illustrations are all behind paywalls; the open-source space has only photo datasets (for machine learning) or scattered old scans. The barrier to doing this dropped from "a team of illustrators drawing for a decade" to "one person plus hundreds of millions of tokens," and that is the premise for why it could succeed in 2026 year.

### Growth tactics (evidence)

1. **Author's own accounts, multi-platform launch (confirmed)** : 10-30 posted a WeChat long-form (huasheng.ai/insights/wechat-2247492678-1), an X Article (x.com/AlchainHust/status/2116088319511605472) and Jike simultaneously. The title and first paragraph hooked the AI crowd with "1B tokens" and "burned through Claude Code / Codex quotas"; half the body covers how to run a large project with Vibe Coding. The readers are mainly AI developers, not birders.

2. **English aggregator reshare (confirmed)** : @RoundtableSpace (0xMarioNawfal) posted "Someone made a sticker for every bird species alive on Earth" at 10-31 11:45 UTC, 57k views. This lines up with the +10-31 stars (Trendshift) on 166 and the +11-01 stars in the 190 snapshot.

3. **Organic Reddit posts across subreddits (post confirmed, data not retrieved)** : r/birds "I made an illustrated sticker for every living bird species… AI-drawn from reference photos", r/coolgithubprojects. Reddit returned 403 to our scraper, so scores and comment counts are unverified. The recall card mentions r/datasets and r/codex, unverified.

4. **Chinese repost accounts spreading it further (confirmed)** : Threads @magicmonx "Someone turned 11,064 kinds of birds into stickers"; an Instagram Reel uses "comment 'bird watching' for free" to drive DMs; YouTube Shorts reposts; aggregators like agentskillshub, skillsllm, libhunt and repostream auto-index it; blog.mushroom.cv wrote a how-to guide.

5. **Author's own follow-up content (confirmed)** : he made a promo video with his own huashu-motion and reposted it (x.com/AlchainHust/status/2116175152836927818); 10-31 teased that the "Mingji" App was under App Store review; 11-05 posted "how the stickers were made" with a 15 language page (6,721 views). Every post also plugged huashu-design and huashu-motion, and it works both ways: the huashu-design 3.0 case study is the Mingji prototype.

6. **SEO / multilingual (layout confirmed, effect unknown)** : the README has 10 languages; birdalbum.com has 15 languages with one page per species, plus an /illustrations/ page "Free bird illustrations – 11,041 species", and README links carry utm_source=github. This lays groundwork for long-tail search and App funneling, with no traffic data yet.

7. **Not found** : HN (our hackernews database has no record of this repo or the birdalbum.com domain), Product Hunt, GitHub Trending, paid promotion.

### Why it took off

1. **Distribution relied on the author himself** : an AI-circle KOL with 117k cumulative followers; one long-form posted across three platforms, +83 stars on day one and +166 the next day. It never reached trending, which means nearly all traffic came from the author's accounts and reshare chains outside the platform.

2. **The completeness of "not one missing" is a good hook** : the 11,064 figure and a puzzle of 18 families in a uniform style are instantly understandable and make you want to share. The English aggregator's reshare copy also only grabbed this point ("All 11,064 of them").

3. **The story was pitched to the AI crowd, not birders** : "1B tokens", "running multiple Codex windows in parallel", "a separate review agent scoring blind, 211 redrawn images". That made it a showcase of how far Claude Code / Codex can scale, which is why the topics include claude-code and codex, and dev.to also has a post titled "How I drew all 11,064 bird species with Claude Code and Codex".

4. **Timing** : By 2026, image models like GPT-image were good enough for realistic illustration, and Claude Code / Codex's 200 USD plans let one person run tens of thousands of image generations and reviews. AviList had just unified the global bird checklist in 2025, and the author November moved the data over to AviList v2026.

5. **Laying out AI image quality problems openly built trust** : The README publicly lists 194 stickers that failed the quality bar, says which were drawn from text descriptions alone, and includes a meetsQualityBar field for filtering. Reference photo credits are listed one by one, and removals were handled within 7 days on request. Birders are naturally hostile to AI art, and this step softened the backlash; the only social discussion Trendshift surfaced praised exactly this.

6. **Licensing opened up** : 10-30 through 11-05 used PolyForm Shield, which banned using the stickers for birding, bird ID, or field guide products; **11-05 was switched to CC BY 4.0** (commit "Relicense the stickers under CC BY 4.0"). Someone used them for their own bird product the next day (yusuftaleb/everybird-stickers). Long-tail growth will likely come more from citations than from the author's posts.

### Differentiation, and whether it's why it took off

The differentiation is the combination of full species coverage × a unified art style × free commercial use × structured multilingual data, and no one else has all four. Professional illustrations sit behind paywalls (Birds of the World, Lynx print books), and free options are either incomplete (Birdorable covers 840 species) or stylistically inconsistent (Wikimedia). **Is that why it took off? Partly.** The combination gave it a strong headline, but most of the stars came from the author's distribution. Compare: the same author's skill and tool repos have gotten 400–700 stars in a single day, while this one got 166–190. People copying the idea with fish, insect, and mushroom stickers got only 0–9 stars, without the distribution. So the "full-species AI field guide" model **can be copied without a moat, but the stars can't be copied** .

### Visibility

It spread in small circles. It went around the Chinese AI community (Huashu's followers, Jike, WeChat Official Accounts) and one English aggregator account, with reposts on Threads, Instagram, and YouTube, but it didn't reach Hacker News or GitHub Trending, and we found no real media coverage. It's an open-source project with no revenue to report; the companion app "鸣迹" is either under review or just launched, and its revenue is not public.

### Copycats

Within a week of launch, these showed up (GitHub search, 2026-11-06):

- hunknownz/intoreal-insect-sticker (created 10-31, 9 stars): "global insect sticker library", copying the description format

- dongsheng123132/fish-sticker (created 10-31, 0 stars): "global fish sticker library"; dongsheng123132/insect-sticker (created 10-31): butterflies first

- pingping1369/mushroom-sticker (created 11-04, 0 stars, mushroomsticker.com): mushroom stickers, CC BY 4.0

- ychenzgithub/BirdSticker (created 10-31, 0 stars): "羽册", a bilingual appreciation site built on these stickers

- yusuftaleb/everybird-stickers (created 11-06): after the license change, used the stickers directly for their own Everybird

### What to borrow

- **"Authoritative catalog × unified AI art style × open license" is a template that fits any category with an authoritative catalog (butterflies, mushrooms, fish, plants, dinosaurs, dog breeds). The real value isn't the drawings, it's the pipeline: reference retrieval, generation, independent review and scoring, blind review, redrawing, and publicly documenting quality issues.**

- **Use open assets to drive traffic to an app** : Launch the asset library plus a free web field guide first (one page per species, 15 languages, capturing long-tail search), then let the app catch users.

- **Tell the launch story to your own audience** : The author didn't try to persuade birders. They told AI developers how they used an agent to finish such a big project. This leveraged existing followers, then broke out through the English aggregator.

- **License strategy** : Protect your own app with Shield first, then switch to CC BY for citations and spread once feedback comes in.

### Still unclear

- Reddit thread scores and comments weren't retrieved (403), and r/birds' reaction to AI art (positive or hostile) was not verified.

- Read and engagement numbers on Xiaohongshu, Jike, and WeChat Official Accounts were not checked.

- Whether the "鸣迹" app is listed on the App Store and how it performs: the App Store lookup returned nothing this time, and our appstore library has no entry for "鸣迹".

- No traffic or SEO data for birdalbum.com.

- Whether the switch to CC BY brings a second wave of citations and growth still needs watching.
