# One person, AI-written code, 55 days, 3,600 stars: how the WorkBuddy reverse-proxy gateway surged on a single free promo, and why it stopped today

**What it is** A self-hosted gateway that turns the quota of a pool of WorkBuddy accounts into OpenAI / Anthropic interfaces that Codex and Claude Code can use directly.

**Why it took off** WorkBuddy's international edition ran a limited-time free offer for DeepSeek in October. The project was international-first from the start and hooked into a hot client. While similar projects went quiet and Tencent cracked down on accounts, it kept shipping several releases a day, and word spread through linux.do and Chinese X.

**C** **How you could approach it** Don't build another WorkBuddy wrapper. Build a generic base layer that turns "free quota" into standard APIs ahead of time. When the next big company announces a free promo, have it connected within a week, publish a tutorial, and show up in the community help threads.

C grade: Took off on a one-time platform subsidy. The free promo has ended, the upstream has been blocked, the author has stopped updating, and dozens of similar tools are still in the space. The lesson is to build integration tools fast when a subsidy drops, but copying the play now won't get you stars. Chatter in small circles

workbuddy2api-hub turns Tencent WorkBuddy accounts into standard OpenAI / Claude APIs, so people can plug WorkBuddy's free DeepSeek on the international version into Codex and Claude Code. Almost all of its stars came from the October free-access window. Today (11-06) the author announced they're stopping maintenance. If you want to build an open-source project that picks up stars, there's a playbook to learn from here, but running the same path again isn't worth it anymore.

### Nov 6, a red line appeared at the top of the README

"Project discontinued (2026-11-06): no further code updates, no tracking of upstream changes, no more handling of new issues / PRs. Thanks to everyone who starred."

Below that line sit two older notices. One from Oct 23 says "moved to low-frequency maintenance"; the other says "WorkBuddy upstream is tightening detection and blocking of unofficial clients... noticeably stricter starting 2026-10-23 afternoon." The repo was created in Sep 12 and as of today has about 3,600 stars and nearly 900 forks (GitHub, 11-06). From the start of the surge to the announcement of discontinuation, it took less than 4 weeks.

### What it is

WorkBuddy is Tencent's AI coding assistant, with an international edition (workbuddy.ai) and a domestic one. This project is a self-hosted gateway: it pools many WorkBuddy accounts and exposes OpenAI Chat Completions, Responses, and Anthropic-format endpoints. That lets clients like Codex, Claude Code, and DeepSeek Harness (DSH, the agent framework DeepSeek open-sourced in August) use the quota in WorkBuddy accounts directly.

The feature list is largely written around the needs of "bulk alt account" users: browser OAuth account import, a separate exit proxy bound to each account, device fingerprint isolation, automatic account switching when quota runs out, automatic daily check-in for points, and a web dashboard. Deployment options include a Windows portable package that runs on double-click, plus one-click scripts for Docker, Synology/FNOS NAS, and OpenWrt routers. The README itself says "This project is 100% Vibe Coding co-produced," with reverse engineering, scheduling, and fingerprint handling all done by AI. The whole repo has a single contributor, who merged 361 PRs in 55 days (trendshift).

### Why it suddenly took off in October: free DeepSeek

起因是一次平台补贴。WorkBuddy 国际版 10 月对 DeepSeek V4.1 Flash 限时免费:先说到 10/9,10/12 又延到 10/31(X @NFT_Chen,10-12);10/17 官方号 @WorkBuddy_AI 发了「New DeepSeek just dropped … free through Oct 31」,上新版 1017 继续免费。知乎一篇免费渠道汇总说国际版「0 积分能用,单号约 2 亿 token 才暂停」。

With a quota that large per account, and accounts easy to register, people immediately wanted to plug it into Codex and DSH, which they use every day. The star curve lines up with these dates (trendshift, day by day):

| Timeline | New stars per day | What was happening at the time |
|---|---|---|
| 9/17–10/9 | 20–50 | An ordinary reverse-proxy tool that nobody was watching |
| 10/10–10/18 | 100–123 | Free promo extended to 10/31; on X, @yang02010 10/10 posted calling it a "reverse-proxy miracle tool" |
| 10/19–10/23 | 160–258 | New model 1017 stays free; similar projects go quiet one by one; Tencent tightens risk controls |
| After 10/24 | 45–75 | Upstream blocking gets stricter, 10/31 free promo ends |

The peak day was around 10/20, with over 250 stars added in a single day. The fork-to-star ratio is about 24%, while new repos of similar size typically sit around 11%. That suggests most people starred it because they actually pulled it down and deployed it, not just to watch.

### Where users came from: linux.do, Chinese X, a blog post

No paid promotion was seen; traffic was organic, mainly from three places:

- **linux.do (the "Laoyou" community)** . 10/10 has a thread "Which WorkBuddy reverse proxy is best?" that recommended it alongside magpie and WorkBuddy Manager. In 10/19 "The DSV4.1 on WorkBuddy International seems to have been crushed" someone asked what tool to use, and a reply pasted the repo name directly. In 10/20 "The WorkBuddy International reverse proxy got blocked after only one day of use," several people said "workbuddy2api-hub is stable," and one added "mainly because this one updates really often, I keep auto-update on," while another said "this has been trending on X lately."

- **X Chinese deal-hunting circles** . The biggest posts all hit tens of thousands of views: @shao__meng 10/18 relayed an official free-for-a-limited-time promo, 4,345 views; @leo114119 10/21 said a rival's author got a lawyer's letter, 11K views.

- **A step-by-step tutorial** . FTL's Blog's 10/18 "Using free DeepSeek via a WorkBuddy reverse proxy" covered exactly hub + DSH, estimated "about 6.1B tokens usable," and several people in the comments 10/20–10/23 got it running by following along.

### Among dozens of similar projects, why this one

This month, there are dozens of repos doing WorkBuddy reverse proxies, account pools, and account switching, with much the same features. It rose to the top for three reasons:

**First, it bet on the international edition from the start.** It was originally named workbuddy2api-intl, and the title of its first formal release, v1.1.0, was "WorkBuddy International multi-account reverse-proxy gateway (domestic edition added)." The hottest competing family at the time, the Sliverkiss line, started from the domestic CodeBuddy, and this free promo only applied to the international edition ("the domestic edition has no free promo yet," @shao__meng). It picked that positioning in September, and October happened to line up. That looks more like luck than foresight.

**Second, it connected to the hottest clients at the time.** It natively supported Codex's Responses API, DSH, and Claude Code. Users weren't asking for "one more OpenAI-compatible endpoint"; they wanted "put free DeepSeek into Codex."

**Still updating while others stopped.** Sliverkiss's original repo 9/24 was deleted; the most-starred linguo2625469 / workbuddy2api-panel 10/21 announced it had stopped maintenance (the X post about a lawyer's letter came from the poster, who says it's probably fake); dsh-workbuddy-connect also stopped. Tencent 10/19–10/23 tightened controls step by step, and this project shipped more than ten versions in three days, from v1.7.19 to v1.7.33: fixing fingerprints, fixing exit proxies, fixing errors. It grew fastest in exactly this window, with users moving over from the stopped projects. That link is **inferred** from timing, and linux.do also has people saying they switched tools after the panel stopped.

But it was never the first. linguo panel, created the same day, has 4,730 stars. yetone/magpie, a menu-bar app that switches models for all agents, has about 31,000 stars, with WorkBuddy as just one plugin.

| Project | stars (approx.) | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| linguo2625469/workbuddy2api-panel | 4,730 | Created the same day, started as a China-version tool, 10/21 stopped |
| yetone/magpie | 31,000 | General gateway, author is well known, WorkBuddy is just one plugin |
| ithtelab/workbuddy-manager | 2,438 | Control panel for the China-version account pool, batch onboarding via QR code |
| aimod-cc/Agent2API | 1,916 | Reuses desktop client login sessions, aggregates a dozen-plus providers |
| corrinehu/dsh-workbuddy-connect | 1,604 | Connects a single local account to DSH only, now stopped |
| shuishuipingan/qoder2api-hub | 522 | Same approach ported to the Qoder platform |

### Why this path stopped working

Its lifespan was set by the platform. The free window ended 10/31; from 10/23 Tencent began recognizing unofficial clients and banning accounts; the author 11/6 stopped maintaining it. Mass registration and proxying around paid access both violate platform terms, and the project's own README says "do not use your main account… at your own risk." The legitimate channels were always there: WorkBuddy Pro at $10/month for 2,000 credits, and DeepSeek's official API at ¥1 per million input tokens during off-peak hours. Once the free access was gone, the tool had no use.

There's also a condition the latecomers can't get: it had its positioning set a month before the subsidy started. By the time you see a platform take off and go build for it, dozens of similar projects are usually already competing.

### If it were you

**One-line verdict:** The WorkBuddy wave is over. Don't build a WorkBuddy reverse proxy. What you can take away is the playbook: when a big company opens free quota, connect that quota to the hot client within the first week. The tool that gets known in the community is the one that wins.

**Who it suits:** Developers who move fast, can ship several versions a day with AI help, already hang out on linux.do or the Chinese X community, and want a week or two of stars and reputation rather than a long-term project.

**Who it doesn't suit:** Anyone who wants a project they can maintain for years and put on a resume, or anyone who fears account bans or lawyer's letters. Projects like this usually end up stopped or deleted, and the reputation they leave is also grey.

**How to do it:**

- Keep an eye on free-quota and quota-giveaway announcements from AI coding tools (Trae, Qoder, CodeArts, Kiro and similar), and build a general base layer first: "free quota → OpenAI / Responses / Anthropic-compatible API." When a subsidy drops, adapting to a new platform should take hours, not weeks.

- Default to Codex, Claude Code, and the one or two hottest clients at launch, and ship a Windows build you can run with a double-click. Many of the people who come will not be coders.

- A better approach is not to tie yourself to one platform. magpie (31k stars) and Agent2API (nearly 2k stars) both show that "one entry point for many providers" lasts longer than "specializing in one."

**How to get users:** Reply on linux.do to help threads like "which one is best" or "what to do after getting banned." Find accounts on the Chinese X community that share free-quota news and tag them with a line. Write a hub + one-client step-by-step tutorial that works out "how many tokens you can get for free." When upstream changes, ship a release the same day. "Updates diligently" then becomes word of mouth that other people spread for you.

**When to get in:** Within the first week after the subsidy announcement. In this WorkBuddy round, those who got on board before 10/10 got most of the growth; arriving after 10/24 was too late.

**What would show you read it wrong:** If the next free promotion produces a dozen similar projects on GitHub within three days, and the original platform starts banning unofficial clients in its first week, the pattern is already known to both the platform and the people who rush in. The window is too short to be worth it.

Where users come from

- **Verified** **platform subsidy case** : WorkBuddy international edition's free DeepSeek V4.1 Flash extended to 10/31 after 10/12 (X @NFT_Chen); 10/17 official @WorkBuddy_AI announced the new version 1017 free until 10/31 (relayed by @shao__meng, 4,345 views); GitHub stars jumped two steps, 10/10 and 10/19, matching the timing

- **Verified** **linux.do community reputation:** "Which WorkBuddy reverse proxy is best?" 10/10; "The DSV4.1F on the international WorkBuddy seems to have been flooded" 10/19 (replies paste the repo name directly); "Got banned the day after using an international WorkBuddy reverse proxy for one day" 10/20 ("workbuddy2api-hub is very stable" and "updates very diligently").

- **Verified** **X Chinese community:** @yang02010 10/10 posted recommending "the workbuddy2api-hub reverse-proxy magic tool"; a linux.do user says "it's been very hot on X lately"; trendshift logged 10/2 and 10/13 social mentions.

- **Verified** **blog tutorial** : FTL's Blog 10/18 "Using free DeepSeek via a WorkBuddy reverse proxy", built on hub + DSH; multiple commenters have reproduced it

- Inferred **migration after similar projects stopped:** Sliverkiss's original repo 9/24 was deleted, linguo panel 10/21 stopped, and dsh-workbuddy-connect stopped. hub's peak 10/19–10/23 overlaps with this, and linux.do users say they switched tools after panel stopped.

## How workbuddy2api-hub (ardeyouxipianyi) got built and run

> Research date 2026-11-06. Data sources: our GitHub repo (repo_profile / data card), GitHub API, trendshift daily table, linux.do threads (read via Exa cache), X posts (read via Jina), and personal blogs.

### One line

It is a multi-account gateway that "reverse-proxies" Tencent WorkBuddy accounts (the international workbuddy.ai and the China version) into OpenAI / Responses / Anthropic-compatible APIs. It didn't take off because the product was new. It took off because it caught a **platform subsidy event** : WorkBuddy's international version made DeepSeek V4.1 Flash free for a limited time (first to 10/9, then extended to 10/12, then to 10/31; 10/17 then added V4.1-Flash-1017 and kept it free). People hunting free quota wanted a tool that could plug that free access into Codex / Claude Code / DeepSeek Harness (DSH). It won among many similar tools for two reasons: **it has focused on the international version from day one** (the free access was the international version), and **while similar projects stopped one after another, it kept shipping several versions a day to keep up with upstream controls** . The project announced it had stopped maintenance today (2026-11-06), and this route is effectively closed by Tencent.

### 1. Data

- Created 2026-09-12; today it has 3,631 stars and 888 forks (GitHub API, same day). The fork-to-star ratio of about 24% is well above the median of about 11% for new repos of similar size (from the github repo SCHEMA notes), suggesting most people actually pulled it down and deployed it.

- Daily star growth (trendshift): 9/17–10/9 at 20–50 per day; **10/10–10/18 at 100–123 per day** ; **10/19–10/23 at 160–258 per day** (peak 10/20 +258, recorded in our repo as 10/22 +256). From 10/24 it fell back to 45–75. In 7 days it gained 362, versus 7 in the previous 560 days (data card).

- Very frequent releases: from v1.1.0 (9/14) to v2.0.0 (11/6) there are about 120 tags, and from 10/21 to 10/23 it shipped v1.7.19–v1.7.33 in three days (GitHub releases). trendshift shows 55 PRs merged in 361 days from only 1 contributors. The README says it is "100% vibe-coded," with AI doing the reverse engineering and fixes.

- Our repo flagged it as a "new account, single-repo surge," but the author's GitHub account was registered 2024-11 and has 18 public repos. The star growth matches the forks and the linux.do discussion, and it doesn't look like star farming.

### 2. Competitors (doing the same thing)

WorkBuddy reverse proxies were a crowded niche from 2026 9 to October. Our repo holds dozens of WorkBuddy/CodeBuddy-related proxy, account-pool, and account-switching tools:

| Project | Form | Repo created | Scale | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| linguo2625469/workbuddy2api-panel | Open source | 2026-09-12 | 4,730 stars / 1,686 forks | Created the same day with more stars. It is an enhanced fork of the deleted Sliverkiss/workbuddy2api, built on the China version of CodeBuddy. **10/21 announced it had stopped maintenance** (the author reportedly received a lawyer's letter; X @leo114119 11.6K views). |
| yetone/magpie | Open-source desktop app (menu bar) | 2026-09-23 | About 31,000 stars | General "switch the model for all agents" gateway, WorkBuddy is only one plugin; yetone is a well-known developer; linux.do users keep comparing it with hub |
| ithtelab/workbuddy-manager | Open source | 2026-09-11 | 2,438 stars | China-version CodeBuddy account pool control panel, batch onboarding via QR code |
| misakano7545/workbuddy2api-panel | Open source | 2026-09-23 | 861 stars | A continuation of the Sliverkiss fork |
| HanawaBanana/workbuddy2api | Open source | 2026-09-24 | 144 stars | Full history backup of Sliverkiss's original repo (9/24 deleted) |
| corrinehu/dsh-workbuddy-connect, dingminhua/dsh-connect-workbuddy | Open source | August | 1,604 / 1,182 stars | Connects only the locally logged-in WorkBuddy to DeepSeek Harness, with no multi-account pool; the former also stopped maintenance (X @xzliu23) |
| aimod-cc/Agent2API | Open source | 2026-09-11 | 1,916 stars | Reuses desktop client login sessions; one base_url calls quota from a dozen-plus providers, not dedicated to WorkBuddy |
| The CodeBuddy plugin in CLIProxyAPI, CangShui/workbuddy-gateway (Go) | Open source | — | Not verified | Alternatives mentioned by linux.do users |
| WorkDaddy, workbuddy-switch, 88lin/workbuddy-auto-signin | Open source | August | 1.7k–2.7k stars | Account switching and check-in tools; they don't produce an API |
| Official: WorkBuddy Pro $10/month (first month $7) for 2,000 credits; Tencent Cloud TokenHub; DeepSeek official API (off-peak input ¥1 per million tokens) | big tech | — | — | The legitimate paid channels; hub's value is getting around them |

### 3. Where users come from

1. **平台补贴事件(主因,已证实)** :WorkBuddy 国际版 DeepSeek V4.1 Flash 限免,10/12 宣布延到 10/31(X @NFT_Chen 10-12);10/17 官方号 @WorkBuddy_AI 发"New DeepSeek just dropped … free through Oct 31",@shao__meng 10/18 转述 4,345 浏览。知乎《Deepseek-v4.1-flash 1017 免费渠道汇总》称国际版"0 积分能用,单号约 2 亿 token 才暂停"。hub 两次涨星台阶(10/10–11、10/19)正好对上限免延期和 1017 新模型。

2. **linux.do (community, verified)** : in the thread "Which reverse proxy for WorkBuddy?" (10/10), hub and magpie and WorkBuddy Manager were all recommended. In "The dsv4.1f of WorkBuddy international is probably blown up" (10/19), someone asked for a tool and got the reply "the open-source ardeyouxipianyi/workbuddy2api-hub". In "The WorkBuddy international reverse proxy got banned after one day" (10/20), several people said "workbuddy2api-hub is stable" and "it updates really often, I keep auto-update on", and someone added "this has been hot on X lately".

3. **X Chinese-language circle (verified)** : @yang02010 10/10 posted "a reverse-proxy tool built specifically for WorkBuddy, workbuddy2api-hub". The timing matches the doubling of stars between 10/10 and 11. The trend aggregator trendshift logged 10/2 and 10/13, one social mention each.

4. **Tutorials/blogs (verified)** : FTL's Blog 10/18, "Using free DeepSeek via WorkBuddy reverse proxy", walks through hub + DSH step by step and estimates "about 6.1B tokens usable". In the comments, 10/20–10/23 people reported successfully reproducing it.

5. **Migration from rivals going offline (likely)** : Sliverkiss's original repo 9/24 was deleted, linguo's panel 10/21 stopped being maintained, and dsh-workbuddy-connect also stopped. hub's peak 10/19–10/23 overlaps with this stretch of "rivals falling over". On linux.do 10/29, someone said "the panel author 21 stopped updating, and later switched to……"

6. No paid promotion found. The README has a "sponsor" slot showing an Agent Router invite link (aff=unrV), which is the only visible monetization by the author.

### 4. Why this one

- **Bet on the international edition paid off** : it was first called workbuddy2api-intl (the homepage still points to that name), and v1.1.0's title is "WorkBuddy international multi-account reverse-proxy gateway (domestic edition added)". The mainstream Sliverkiss-line forks at the time started from the domestic CodeBuddy. The free access applied only to the international edition ("the domestic edition has no free promotion yet", @shao__meng), and hub's positioning fits this subsidy exactly.

- **Plugs into hot clients** : it natively supports Codex's Responses API, DeepSeek Harness (DSH, the agent framework DeepSeek open-sourced in August), and Claude Code. These are the hottest tools in the Chinese community, and users wanted to "stuff free DeepSeek into Codex/DSH".

- **Iteration speed against risk controls** : between 10/19 and 10/23 Tencent gradually tightened detection of unofficial clients. hub shipped over a dozen versions in three days, fixing identity fingerprints, exit proxies, and 11-128 errors. Users cited "updates often" as a reason to choose it.

- **Beginner-friendly** : a Windows portable build that runs on double-click, one-click scripts for Docker/NAS/OpenWrt, a web dashboard, account import via browser OAuth, and automatic check-in for points. Many of the freebie hunters don't write code.

- **Multi-account pool + independent proxy exit per account + device fingerprint isolation** : exactly what users running batches of small accounts need.

### 5. Differentiation, and whether that's why it took off

Functionally it's much like linguo panel and the magpie plugin (both OpenAI-compatible, with an account pool and check-in). The real difference is **international edition first + domestic/international/Huawei CodeArts exits in one pool + Codex/DSH adaptation + sustained maintenance** . That difference explains why it took off, but only given outside events: without DeepSeek's free promotion on the international edition, "international first" is worth nothing; without rivals going offline, it would just be second place. It never surpassed linguo panel, which was created the same day (4,730 vs 3,631), and in the larger field it's far behind the general-purpose gateway magpie (around 31k).

### 6. How many people see it now

It's circulating in small circles: linux.do, the X Chinese freebie-hunting crowd, and a few blogs. No media coverage. The biggest X mention drew 10k views. But this niche was already crowded (dozens of similar repos), and the platform has since shut it down: upstream clearly tightened from 10/23, the free promotion ended in 10/31, and the author 11/6 announced it would stop updating.

### 7. Copycats

- Same-name forks/mirrors: hungcuong9125/workbuddy2api-hub, 1975983634z-tech/workbuddy2api-hub, Docker Hub oozzbb/workbuddy2api-hub, and a GitCode mirror.

- Applying the "<platform>2api-hub" idea to other platforms: shuishuipingan/qoder2api-hub (2026-09-19,522 stars), xu20060420fan-cell/workbuddy2api-trae-qoder-minimax-panel (10/23), zhuweiyou/codearts2api, and other multi-platform aggregators.

### 8. What others can learn

- The playbook of "platform subsidy → immediately build an access tool": in the week a big company's free offer goes out, whoever first plugs the quota into a hot client (Codex / Claude Code / DSH) captures the organic traffic from linux.do and X. The window lasts only a few weeks.

- Still maintaining the project while rivals stop under legal or risk-control pressure is itself an acquisition channel, and frequent releases turn "updates often" into word of mouth.

- Using AI agents to reverse-engineer and repair lets one person sustain several releases a day.

- What not to copy: the dependency violates platform terms (bulk registration, reverse proxying), and the platform decides the lifecycle. In this case, from traction to stopping was under 4 weeks.

### 9. Still unclear

- Actual user count (forks and Docker pulls reflect part of it; GHCR pull numbers weren't available).

- Whether the "Tencent lawyer's letter" is real is unverified (the poster himself said it's probably fake).

- Whether the author posted promotional threads on linux.do is unverified (the site blocked direct access, so I only read third-party posts).

- The follower counts of accounts that reshared it on X are unverified.
