The TV version the official app won't make, built by an old set-top-box developer: a Hongguo short-drama TV client, over 800 stars in a month
What it is A GitHub repo that only hosts installer packages, offering an unofficial Hongguo short-drama app for TVs and PCs, installable on Android TV, older TV boxes, LG TVs, Mac, Windows, and Linux.
Why it took off Overseas Chinese viewers discovered Hongguo through TikTok clips but had no official TV app at home. It supports more devices than any competitor, and a TV-selling creator wrote a "5-step install on Google TV" tutorial that was shared 1.5K times.
CHow you could follow this Don't build an eleventh Hongguo client. Copy the recipe instead: find something hugely popular on mobile with no decent big-screen version and no need to crack anything, build a TV client for it, write the README like a download page normal people can read, then let TV and box creators write the tutorials for you.
- Data (updated daily) · Repo created 2026-10-07 · 921 stars · 7 days +381

Hongguo short dramas have no TV app. A developer who had spent years writing media client apps for TV boxes shipped about 150 releases in one month, turning an unofficial Hongguo TV build into the most widely installable option in its category. What made it spread wasn't programmers; it was a Malaysian Facebook creator who sells TVs. Below: what it is, where the stars came from, why a dozen clones appeared the same month, and how to think about building a project that earns stars the same way.
A TV-selling Facebook post
On Oct 28, 2026 at 2:17 PM, Malaysian Facebook blogger Jeanne Foong posted: "📺🔥 Hongguo short dramas are now on Google TV! Binge on the big screen in just 5 steps! Phone too small? Just watch on your TV!"
Step one: "Open github.com/aston314/hongguo-tv-releases in the TV browser and click the latest release." Step two tells you which file to grab under Assets: the standard build hongguo-tv-0.2.128.apk, "download this one first"; the MPV build, "if the standard one shows a black screen or won't play, try this"; and a final reminder: "You don't need the SHA256, JSON, or Source code downloads!"
The post carried a Shopee purchase link for a 55-inch PRISM+ Google TV, tagged "Commission eligible." In the comments the creator added: "The newest version really is 133, I just updated" and "TV costs RM1437."
This post got about 1K reactions, 173 comments and 1.5K shares (11-06 is the number of opens). The same day, this GitHub repo went from 338 stars to 420 stars, +82 in a single day, its first clear spike.
An open-source client written by a programmer became, in a TV seller's hands, a selling point: "Buy the TV I recommend and you can watch Hongguo on the big screen." That's the project's story.
What it is
aston314/hongguo-tv-releases is a repo that only hosts installer packages. Created 2026 Oct 7, its README describes itself as "official installers, version info, release notes, and checksum files." The source lives in a separate repo, aston314/hongguo-tv (36 stars): an Android shell with a Go core, built into multiple architecture packages via GitHub Actions.
The list of installable targets is long: Android TV has a standard build, an MPV decoding build, and an Android 5-compatible build, with ARM64, ARMv7, and x86_64 variants; macOS and Windows get ZIPs; LG TVs running webOS get a .ipk beta; Linux gets an AppImage. Functionally it's close to the official app: log in by scanning a QR code with the Hongguo phone app, cloud-synced favorites and progress, danmaku and comments, season switching for series, and on Android 8 and up it can push a "Hongguo picks" channel to the TV home screen.
It's free. The README reads like a download page normal people can understand, not a note for developers, and that matters later.
How the stars grew
GitHub star count (daily figures, 11-06):
| Date | Cumulative stars | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| 10-12 | 20 | Repo created 10-07, quiet for the first few days |
| 10-17 | 60 | around ten a day |
| 10-24 | 214 | YouTube channel "Mr. Ai Tech Talk" posts a Hongguo TV video, 8.6K views (the download link points to Baidu Netdisk; not verified that it's this build) |
| 10-27 | 338 | Daily +40~55 |
| 10-28 | 420 | +82 that day, Facebook "5-step install on Google TV" tutorial post |
| 11-02 | 636 | +96 that day, the peak during the observation window (source not verified) |
| 11-06 | 838 | +7 over the last 370 days, +7 over the first 295 days, still accelerating |
On day 11-06 the page showed 868 stars and 61 forks in real time, with issues already numbered up to #180.
Several entry points line up:
- Malaysian Chinese creators on Facebook, the biggest influence. Besides Jeanne Foong, Vanness Lee demoed the "Xiaoyun TV Box" with the same Shopee links. These people earn commissions from selling TVs and boxes, which amounts to free promotion for the repo.
- Taiwanese users on Threads: someone asked "where can I download the apk?" and the reply linked to this repo; someone posted "watching 紅果劇 on Ubuntu" with the link; someone wrote an installation guide for LG webOS developer mode. The source README also notes that a Taiwan-version LG OLED65C5PTA runs it on real hardware.
- Search: during the same period, a dozen-plus third-party Hongguo clients were being pushed in rotation by resource accounts on Zhihu, Bilibili, and X, so "Hongguo on GitHub" became an entry point in itself. Searching "Hongguo TV" lands on the one with tv in its name and the most complete TV version.
Conversely, searching X for its repo name, author name, or "Hongguo TV" returns 0 results, with no media coverage. These stars weren't surfaced by developer circles; ordinary viewers starred it. The issue tracker shows it: "Amlogic T5M / Android 14 32-bit software decode 8fps," "webOS 0.2.147 LUNA Timeout," "can't find 卿本佳人却相宜 in the app," and one that reads "add a realistic time limit, it's too easy to get sucked in," many of them written in traditional Chinese.
Demand was built by TikTok
Hongguo short dramas are pulling in overseas Chinese users, and the engine is clip accounts on TikTok. Search "红果短剧 电视" on TikTok and most results are accounts in Singapore, Taiwan and Malaysia, tagged "#紅果短劇app免費看", with single clips ranging from 100K to 1.5M views. One Singapore clip has 1.48M views; one Taiwan clip has 577K (11-06).
These viewers commonly have Google TV, TV boxes or LG TVs at home. But Hongguo's official offerings are a phone app and a Windows version on the Microsoft Store, with no TV version. Search China's TV app stores like Dangbei or Hisense and it doesn't show up. The "红果短剧 TV 版" floating around online is a modified phone APK. And overseas users can't access China's TV app stores anyway.
So the demand sits unmet. On one side are overseas Chinese pulled in by clips who want to watch on the living room big screen. On the other, the official side isn't building for them.
In the same month, a dozen-plus clones appeared
aston314 isn't the only one who spotted this gap. From September to October 2026, a wave of third-party Hongguo clients showed up on GitHub (stars 11-06):
| Project | Repo created | Stars | What the others do |
|---|---|---|---|
| hongguo-desktop-releases | 09-14 | 5416 | The earliest and most numerous, Windows-first, TV only in beta |
| yangbin1322/hongguo-player | 09-29 | 2676 | Desktop only, "no Android emulator needed" |
| 红果鉴 (zhoufuweigg/guoapp) | 09-26 | 1684 | Phone |
| MiniReel(Minireel/HGhub) | 11-03 | 1092 | Phone, TV, Win and Mac; went from 11-05 to 11-06 in a day, up 474; TV supports only Android 9 and up |
| jackotom/hongguo-drama | 10-07 | 878 | GPL open-source desktop version, downloadable |
| N3urda/hongguoTV | 09-21 | 871 | TV version needing a separate Node service; growth mostly stalled after 10-14 |
| aston314/hongguo-tv-releases | 10-07 | 838 | TV-focused, Android 5 to 14, webOS, Linux |
| pan8664716/HGTV | 10-26 | 327 | Single APK for TV and phone, a late entrant |
| beilunyang/openhongguo | 10-26 | 329 | Unofficial SDK, making it easier for latecomers |
aston314 wasn't first, and it doesn't have the most stars. It took the "TV" niche. Other TV-focused projects were either half-finished or only supported newer Android. Only this one covered old Android 5 boxes, 32-bit Amlogic chips and LG TVs. Its own source README even says "the original repo published compiled artifacts; this project reimplements the client." It is a TV rebuild that came after someone else's desktop version.
Why this one
The author already builds TV clients. aston314 is an old account with 43 repos and 92 followers, long known for porting Lampa (a media center popular in Russian-speaking TV box circles), along with Doudou TV and Kafei Live TV. Remote focus handling, compatibility with old boxes and in-app APK updates are the hardest parts of TV development, and he already knows them. The source README says the packaging process was adapted from his other repo. When others were learning TV development from scratch, he was reusing his own work.
Shipping fast, almost absurdly so. 30 days to v0.2.150, roughly five releases a day; on Oct 26 two webOS betas went out in one day. The issue template asks users to attach a "playback diagnostics" screenshot, and a reported bug gets a fix in a build or two. For ordinary viewers, this is what an official TV app that somebody actually maintains looks like.
The README is written for ordinary people. This is easy to overlook. Product reviewers can turn it straight into a 5-step tutorial because the download page clearly says which package is for whom and what to try if the screen is black. The tutorial line "if the standard build shows a black screen or won't play, try this one" was copied straight from the repo.
Its problems
The moat is shallow. Content and APIs all come from Hongguo, and similar projects appear every week. MiniReel's repo was created only 11-03 before gaining 474 stars in a day.
Compliance risk is high. The source README says the Go core handles "spade_a key decoding and CENC AES-CTR decryption," which means bypassing the platform's encrypted playback. The author of the Bilibili third-party client PiliPala stopped maintaining it after receiving a lawyer's letter, and that precedent is already on record. If ByteDance acts, this whole wave could be taken down together. If the official side ships its own TV version, the need disappears.
The author is already looking for the next step. On Nov 6 he opened issue #179 in this repo, "invite you to try Yunying TV", pointing Hongguo's users toward his other general-purpose media shell. Using users gathered by one project to promote a second one is a move worth noting.
If it were you
C. Worth learning from, but don't build the eleventh Hongguo client. The track got over a dozen projects in two months. The content belongs to someone else, the APIs are cracked, and the stars could vanish with a single lawyer's letter. What's worth studying is the recipe behind it: an official content app shipped only on phones, overseas users who want it on the living room screen, a person who already knew how to build TV clients filling that gap, and sellers of TV hardware writing the tutorials for you.
Who it suits: developers who already build Android TV, webOS or TV box clients and want their open-source project seen by ordinary users, not just programmers; people willing to answer issues and ship releases every day.
Who it doesn't suit: anyone unwilling to touch copyright and cracking (nearly every project in this category runs into it); anyone who has never built for TV and expects a usable version in a week or two. Old box compatibility and remote control interaction are where the real time goes. And anyone hoping to collect stars from the programmer crowd: these projects barely get traction on X or tech communities.
How to do it: pick a gap that doesn't require cracking. Look for things that are very popular on phones but lack a decent big-screen version from either the official side or the community, and where the content is the user's own or has a public API. Examples include self-hosted media libraries, podcasts, cloud drives with open platforms, live streams with open protocols, or large-text video calling for older users. (These are directions; which ones are truly open needs your own search, so treat this as inference.) Copy the method: one repo dedicated to installers, with a README written like a download page ordinary people can follow, specifying which package goes to which device and what to try when something breaks; a separate build for older devices; an issue template asking users to attach diagnostics; GitHub Releases plus an update.json for in-app updates.
How to get stars: skip the tech communities and go where your users are. This project's stars came from overseas Chinese product reviewers on Facebook and Taiwanese users on Threads. Yours can work the same way: find the creators who sell TVs and boxes or make "how to install XX" videos, and give them installation steps they can screenshot directly. They have a commercial incentive and will share it themselves.
When is the window: if you want to do this on the Hongguo track, the window depends on when ByteDance acts or releases an official TV version. Nobody knows, and it could close at any time. For a different topic, there's no hard deadline.
What would signal you read it wrong: ① after a month or two, this wave of Hongguo projects hasn't been touched and no official TV version has shipped, and stars keep climbing. That suggests the platform is tolerating it, and there may still be room to build what the clones did poorly, such as a better experience on old boxes. ② Conversely, if these repos start getting taken down or stop being maintained, it means stars for "clients for someone else's content" were borrowed, and only the "big-screen gap + product reviewers" half of the recipe remains usable. ③ You build a legal big-screen client, with README and tutorials ready, and over three months not a single reviewer will post it. That would mean this kind of traction came from Hongguo's own popularity, not from the recipe.

Bottom line
The official Hongguo short drama app has never had a TV version. Overseas Chinese viewers (Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan) were pulled into Hongguo by the "紅果短劇app免費看" tag on TikTok, and many have Google TV, TV boxes and LG TVs at home. So the need to watch Hongguo on the big screen went unmet. aston314 already wrote TV-box media clients (Lampa, 豆逗 TV, 咖啡直播 TV), and in one month his version shipped about 150 releases with broader device support than any rival: Android 5 to 14, MPV decoding, LG webOS, Linux. Several overseas Chinese users posted "5 steps to install Hongguo on Google TV" tutorials on Facebook, which brought in most of the new users this month. The repo itself is just a download point, and most stars came from ordinary viewers, not developers.
1. Basic data
- The repo was created on 2026-10-07 and holds only installer packages (no source code; its README calls them "official installers, version info, release notes and checksum files"). A separate source repo, aston314/hongguo-tv (36 stars, created 2026-10-06), has an Android shell plus a Go core, with GitHub Actions building multi-ABI packages.
- Star counts (github repo_day): 10-12 is 20, 10-20 is 107, 10-27 is 338, 10-28 is 420 (+82 in one day), 11-02 is 636 (+96 in one day, the peak in the observation window), 11-06 is 838. The live page shows 868 stars and 61 forks. gain_7d is 370, and the first 7 days were 295, still accelerating.
- Issues have reached #180, mostly playback reports from ordinary users, e.g. "Amlogic T5M / Android 14 32-bit software decode 8fps", "webOS 0.2.147 LUNA Timeout", "卿本佳人却相宜 can't be found in the app", "add a real-time clock, it's too easy to get hooked". Many are written in traditional characters, clearly from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau and Southeast Asia.
- Release cadence: update.json shows 2026-11-06 shipped v0.2.150 (version_code 149), about 150 releases in 30 days. On 10-26 they pushed two test builds in a row, webOS 0.2.120 and 0.2.121.
- Packages by platform: Android TV has a standard build (HTML5 plus Media3), an MPV build, and an Android 5 compatible build covering ARM64, ARMv7, x86_64. macOS and Windows are ZIPs. LG webOS is a .ipk test build. Linux is an AppImage test build. There's also in-app online updates, phone QR login via the Hongguo mobile app, cloud sync of favorites and progress, danmaku and comments, switching seasons in series, and on Android 8+ a "Hongguo Picks" channel pushed to the system TV home screen (source: aston314/hongguo-tv README).
2. Competitors
Hongguo is official to Douyin Group. It has a mobile app and a Windows version, "红果免费短剧", listed on the Microsoft Store (apps.microsoft.com/detail/xp8jzm5h793blk). There is no official TV version: a Baidu Kuku article states "As of now, Hongguo has no official TV version. It cannot be found on Dangbei Market, Hisense TV app stores or other mainstream app stores." The "Hongguo TV version" listed on Sofa Network 7.2.9.32 is actually a mobile build repackaged as an APK.
From 2026-09 onward a whole wave of third-party Hongguo clients appeared on GitHub (github repo, star counts 11-06):
| Project | Repo created | Stars | Platform | How it differs from aston314 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| waligoraamodio288-rgb/hongguo-desktop-releases (maintained by 「渠道有数」) | 2026-09-14 | 5416 | Windows stable release; Mac and Android TV are test builds | Started earliest and got the most traffic, focused on desktop. TV is only a test build. Tagged by us as "new account, single-repo surge". |
| yangbin1322/hongguo-player | 2026-09-29 | 2676 | Windows / macOS | Desktop only, pitched as "no Android emulator needed" |
| zhoufuweigg/guoapp and Xanerix/guoapp (红果鉴 / 真果鉴) | 09-26 / 10-02 | 1684 / 891 | Phone | Private short-drama client, phone only |
| Minireel/HGhub (MiniReel) | 2026-11-03 | 1092 (11-05 to 11-06 it gained 474 in a day) | Phone, TV (Android TV 9+), Windows, Mac | Promoted on Zhihu, X and Bilibili, "all platforms, no ads". TV supports Android 9+ only, no webOS. |
| jackotom/hongguo-drama | 2026-10-07 | 878 | Mac / Windows | GPL open-source desktop app with three content sources, can download |
| N3urda/hongguoTV | 2026-09-21 | 871 | Android TV (React Native, Android 8+) | Describes itself as "project planning and API research", needs a separate Node service. Growth largely stopped after 10-14. |
| pan8664716/HGTV | 2026-10-26 | 327 | Android TV and phone, single APK | Kotlin with ExoPlayer, a later direct competitor |
| jackherex/duanjuzhijia-down-tv | 2026-10-01 | 209 | TV | Short Drama Home v2, distributed via cloud drives and accelerated downloads |
| liangzai-kk/hongguo-short-drama-desktop | 2026-10-08 | 225 | Windows | Selling points are upscaling and DLSS |
| beilunyang/openhongguo | 2026-10-26 | 329 | SDK | Unofficial anonymous SDK, lowering the barrier for latecomers |
Bottom line: this is an already crowded lane, with at least 10 similar projects, almost all appearing between 2026-09 and October. aston314 was not first, and doesn't have the most stars. What it holds is the "TV" niche, and its rivals in that niche (N3urda, Short Drama Home TV, HGTV, MiniReel TV) are either still half-finished or only support newer Android versions.
3. Where users come from (growth tactics)
- The Malaysian Chinese Facebook tutorial (confirmed, biggest impact): Jeanne Foong posted on 2026-10-28 14:17 "📺🔥 Hongguo short drama on Google TV! Big-screen binge in just 5 steps!" Step one was "open github.com/aston314/hongguo-tv-releases in the TV browser", with the download
hongguo-tv-0.2.128.apknamed. The post got about 1K reactions, 173 comments and 1.5K shares, and it also included a Shopee Malaysia PRISM+ Google TV affiliate link (the post is marked Commission eligible). The same day the repo gained +82 stars in a day (338 to 420), the first clear jump. Another similar post came from Vanness Lee (Malaysia, "Xiaoyun TV Box", Shopee link, 1.4K views). Posters like these earn commissions on TVs and boxes, which amounts to free promotion for the repo. - Threads and Taiwanese users (confirmed): On Threads someone asked "where can I download the apk", and the reply linked this repo. @xyzgabcde posted "Ubuntu watching 紅果劇" with the repo link. @oco3383 posted a guide to installing on LG webOS developer mode. The source README mentions that a Taiwan-version LG OLED65C5PTA real device runs fine.
- YouTube and Bilibili videos from independent devs showing a community-built Hongguo TV version (confirmed to exist, but only partly verified which video points to which repo): YouTube channel "艾先生科技说" 10-24 posted "Hongguo short drama TV edition big upgrade: login sync, search, online updates" with 8.6K views. The features match the aston314 update notes, but the download link goes to Baidu Netdisk, so it's unverified whether it's a repost of the aston314 build. Bilibili BV1ozH56tE3o, "Hongguo short drama TV version is finally here! Made by an indie dev" (10-25), has 2334 views; unverified which repo it points to.
- Pulled along by the wider wave (inference): At the same time waligoraamodio288, yangbin1322 and MiniReel were promoted in turn by Zhihu ("Hongguo short drama is here for phone, computer and TV"), by the "娜美知识库" account on X, and by the "宝藏研究社" account on Bilibili. "Searching Hongguo on GitHub" became an entry point in itself. aston314 is the most complete TV-side option with "tv" in its name, so people searching for "Hongguo TV" naturally find it.
- Review sites and SEO (proven, secondary): The cross-border e-commerce post by Mr. Fu (fucailin.com) 11-02 featured "Hongguo Short Drama TV" app, a TV app dedicated to 0.2.139.
- Almost nothing on X (confirmed): x-radar searches for "hongguo-tv-releases", "aston314" and "红果 TV" each returned only 0 results. So developer circles didn't drive this.
How the demand formed: A TikHub search for "红果短剧 电视" returns many clips from SG, TW and MY accounts, tagged "#紅果短劇app免費看", with single posts often at 100K to 1.5M views (for example, du2dfc2hx5 posted in SG with 1.48M views, and jdjd.fjds posted in TW with 577K views). Hongguo used these clips to acquire users among overseas Chinese, and this group often has Google TV, TV boxes and LG TVs at home, yet Hongguo had no TV app, and they can't use China's domestic TV app stores. aston314's stars came from this group. The traditional characters in the issues, the Malaysian Facebook post and the Taiwan LG real-device report all point to the same audience.
4. Why it took off
- The official side left TV empty, and demand is large: Hongguo has no TV version, and TikTok clips have pulled overseas Chinese viewers into it in large numbers.
- The author already built TV clients: aston314's GitHub account is old (user id 2224932), with 43 repos and 92 followers. He has long worked on Lampa (a Russian TV-box media center), on its Cordova and desktop versions, and built 豆逗 TV and 咖啡直播 TV. He already knows the hard parts of TV clients: remote-control focus, box compatibility, in-app APK updates. The source README also says the "Android shell, Go build and packaging flow reference aston314/vidsrc-local-proxy", so he reused his own existing technical base.
- Widest compatibility: a standard build, an MPV build and an Android 5 compatible build, three packages for three ABIs, plus webOS and Linux. It covers old TV boxes, 32-bit Amlogic chips and LG TVs. Among similar projects, it's the only one covering both webOS and Android 5.
- Very fast iteration, responsive to issues: about 150 releases in 30 days. The issue template asks for a "playback diagnostics" screenshot, and each user-reported problem gets a fix release soon after.
- Features close to the official app: phone QR login, cloud sync, danmaku and comments, switching seasons in series, pushing to a TV home-screen channel. For ordinary users, it is effectively the "official TV version".
- A copyable 5-step tutorial with exact filenames: the repo README reads like a download page that ordinary people can follow, so affiliate bloggers screenshotted it directly into tutorials.
5. Differentiation
Its edge is the most complete TV support and the most devices it installs on, not new features: most similar projects build desktop first, with TV as an afterthought. That's really why it took off: its traffic came from "big-screen binge" tutorials that recommended it, and it actually plays on old boxes and LG TVs. But the moat is shallow. MiniReel 11-03 was a new repo that gained 474 in a day, HGTV and N3urda are also building TV apps, and all of them depend entirely on Hongguo's content and APIs.
6. Visibility, risks and copycats
- Visibility: it's spreading within a niche. The circle is overseas Chinese drama viewers (Facebook, Threads, YouTube), not the developer community. There are 0 discussions on X, no media coverage, and no revenue (it's free and takes no payments).
- There are already many copycats: pan8664716/HGTV (created 10-26, "Android TV / phone / tablet"), Minireel/HGhub (11-03), and jackherex's Short Drama Home TV. aston314's own source README says "keeps the Mac version's left sidebar" and "the original repo published compiled artifacts, this project reimplements the client", which suggests it too was a TV rebuild after others' desktop versions.
- High compliance risk: the source README says the Go core handles
spade_akey decoding and CENC AES-CTR decryption to "clear" video, which means bypassing DRM. The author of PiliPala, a third-party Bilibili client, stopped development after receiving a lawyer's letter, so there's precedent. If ByteDance's group acts, this whole wave of projects could be taken down. - The author is using this traffic to promote their other product: 11-06 The author opened issue #179 in this repo, "Invite you to try Yunying TV", directing users from Hongguo TV to their other video shell (external JSON resource config, demo at code.aston.rocks/demo.json). They're already funneling traffic to their own product.
7. Takeaways
- Find hit content apps that only have mobile versions and no big-screen version, and build a TV version for overseas Chinese: the demand is real, and creators who sell TVs will write tutorials for you on their own.
- Use GitHub Releases as free distribution, online updates, and a feedback channel: add SHA256 verification to update.json, and pair it with an issue template that includes "playback diagnostics".
- Use the traffic your first product brought in to promote your second product (Yunying TV) through an issue or announcement.
8. Still unclear
- 10-17 earlier growth curve, and which post or video the single-day +96 on 11-02 came from (unverified).
- Whether the YouTube channel "Mr. Ai Tech Talk" and several Bilibili videos distribute aston314's package (unverified).
- Actual install count: there is no download number. You can query download_count on release assets via the GitHub API, but the API was rate-limited this time, so I couldn't check.
- Whether ByteDance will send a lawyer's letter and when; whether the official side will build a TV version itself.
