# A "plugin" for Tencent's AI client: WorkDaddy 80 days, 2700 stars, 110k downloads

**What it is** An open-source enhancement panel that sits inside Tencent's WorkBuddy / CodeBuddy desktop client: one-click multi-account switching, conversations that carry over to the new account, do-not-disturb background running, reconnect-and-resume, and theme swapping.

**Why it took off** WorkBuddy bills by credits, and the credits burn faster the more you use it. Many people started running multiple accounts and rotating them, but official switching means closing the app and restarting. WorkDaddy moved that step into the client. It was first posted on linux.do, then picked up by Chinese tool accounts on Bilibili and X.

**B** **How you could follow** Stop building yet another WorkBuddy tool. Find the next domestic AI desktop client that's catching on and bills by quota (users are already naming Trae and Qoder). Be first to ship a full-featured, injection-based enhanced version that works on all three platforms, and cold-start it on linux.do.

Grade B: the model is clear and replicable, and users are already asking for the next host. But WorkBuddy alone is crowded with a string of reverse proxies, account-switchers, and check-in tools, the reverse-proxy gateways are taking the stars, and the whole thing hangs on whether the host bans accounts or blocks injection. Big tech could shut the window at any time. Chatter in small circles

On 2026 20, a user called sunofbeach posted "【开源推广】WorkDaddy:WorkBuddy 内置增强工具" on linux.do. The second reply already read: "Squeezing the free-perk hustle to the max." Two and a half months later, the repo has 2762 stars and 303 forks, and the installer has been downloaded about 115k times. The author has only this one repo and 33 followers. It took off by piggybacking on a desktop client with 30 million monthly active users from a big tech company. Anyone who wants to copy this needs to think through two things: who the next host should be, and what happens when the host turns on you.

### What it is

WorkBuddy is Tencent's desktop AI office assistant, launched in 2026 March. In September it had 32.4M monthly active users (QuestMobile). Over 90% of users are on desktop, it bills by credits, and daily check-ins earn credits. WorkDaddy isn't standalone software. It's a panel that "attaches" to the official client: through the local Chrome debugging protocol, it injects UI components into the running WorkBuddy window, without modifying the official installer.

Once installed, WorkBuddy gains these features: multiple accounts switchable with one click, with no need to close the app, scan codes, or restart; conversations can carry over to the new account and continue; a "do-not-disturb" mode keeps long tasks from being stalled by permission pop-ups, and tasks resume automatically after a network drop; there are also prompt drafts and a frosted-glass theme. The domestic version, international version, CodeBuddy CN, and CodeBuddy clients are all supported, with installers for macOS, Windows, and Linux.

### Why people want it: credits ran out

A reply on the original linux.do post put the need most bluntly: "I wouldn't bother with multiple accounts if they didn't raise prices, because I used to not even spend a hundred flash credits a day. But now a single task costs forty or fifty credits, so I'm going to farm multiple accounts too."

A points system plus daily check-ins naturally pushes people to "register a few more accounts and rotate." Official multi-account switching is a hassle (a Zhihu tutorial's own words: close the app, swap the auth file, restart), and with many accounts it's unworkable. WorkDaddy sells exactly that step. In Nov 5, the Chinese tool account "Bai Jun Knowledge Sharing" on X promoted it, saying "you can register several wb accounts and aggregate them into an account pool... automatic seamless switching." That post got 15.8K views. The next day the repo gained +105 stars in a single day, its highest on record (inference: mainly driven by this post).

### Where users come from

- **linux.do cold start** : The author posted on the second day after creating the repo, reaching 240 replies, 8418 views, and 435 likes. This community is where people farming Chinese AI quotas are most concentrated.

- **Spontaneous reposts from tool accounts** : X had a wave in Aug 23 and another in Nov 5. A Bilibili UP host made a video titled "Must-install plugin for heavy WorkBuddy users! One-click multi-account credit farming." A Smzdm daily from Aug 27 mentioned that people on Bilibili and Xiaohongshu were teaching how to use it.

- **Download site listings** : Several software download sites have pages titled "WorkDaddy download - WorkBuddy multi-account switching tool." The author also built a dedicated site, workdaddy.dev, with interactive demos.

- **Riding the host's hype** : In late August WorkBuddy ran a two-week free promotion for new models, and in September the whole internet was full of "credit freedom" guides. WorkDaddy got 248 issues in September, more than double any other month (inference: lines up with these waves of hype).

No ads, no Hacker News, and it never made the GitHub trending list.

### Stars are only the tip of the iceberg

Looking at the daily star log: Oct 16 1949, Nov 6 2691, and in the last 7 days +320, clearly faster than the 7 days before (+202). But download volume tells the story better: the releases add up to about 115k downloads, and the single version released in Oct 24 alone got 1.2.18k... 27k (GitHub, 11-06; this includes auto-updates and repeat downloads, so it isn't a headcount). Downloads are forty times the stars, which means most users are ordinary office workers who don't browse GitHub much. This is where "injecting into the client" beats "installing another tool": users feel WorkBuddy just got better, not that they installed something new.

The author is also very active: 80 days, 37 releases. Each time WorkBuddy upgraded, it broke the plugin, users flooded the issues, and it was usually fixed the same day or the next.

### Who it's competing with

A whole crop of open-source tools has grown around WorkBuddy credits (GitHub search, 11-06):

| Project | What it does | star | How it differs from WorkDaddy |
|---|---|---|---|
| workbuddy2api-panel | Reverse-proxies a pile of accounts into an OpenAI-compatible API | 4722, +2464 in the past month | For developers who want to feed free credits to Claude Code / Codex, not for working inside WorkBuddy |
| workbuddy2api-hub | Same as above | 3581, +2850 in the past month | Growing fastest; people on X have already reported accounts banned through the proxy |
| workbuddy-manager | Account pool + reverse proxy + key distribution | 2438 | Leans toward bulk operations |
| workbuddy-auto-signin | Only does automatic check-in | 1993 | The part WorkDaddy later played down |
| workbuddy-switch | Standalone account-switching tool | 1768, +679 in the past month | Launched two days before WorkDaddy, doesn't inject into the client |
| cockpit-tools | Multi-account management for general AI IDEs | 19741 | Manages everything, doesn't target WorkBuddy's UI |

Two things stand out. First, judged by stars alone, the reverse-proxy gateway category grew faster than this one in the same month: developers would rather pull credits out and use them in other tools. WorkDaddy won over a different crowd: non-developers who still work inside WorkBuddy. Second, near-identical clones (workbuddy-account-hub with 29 stars, workbuddy-tools with 37 stars) never took off. The one that shipped first, shipped complete, and shipped inside the client took most of the share.

### The sword hanging overhead

Right under the first post, someone warned: "Be careful, Tencent's big hand is out there" and "Nanshan Pizza Hut's reputation is too scary." WorkBuddy's subscription terms explicitly prohibit bulk registration and claiming rewards through abnormal methods. Users have reported suspected bans in WorkDaddy's own issues. The author is also hedging: in Sep 19's 1.2.3 release, they removed "auto-claim daily credits" from the README and changed it to "check-in / growth plan query." Auto check-in is off by default and warns about the risks before it's turned on. If the host someday blocks the debugging-port injection or changes the credit rules, this whole track could disappear at once.

### If it were you

**One-line verdict: WorkBuddy alone is already crowded, so don't build the Nth WorkBuddy tool. What's worth copying is the model: find the next domestic AI desktop client that's catching on and bills by quota, and be the first to ship an "injected enhanced version."**

- **Who it's for** : Developers who can do Electron / debugging-protocol injection, ship installers for all three platforms, and are willing to stay up late fixing things every time the host upgrades. The goal is to collect stars and a reputation in the Chinese developer community.

- **Who it's not for** : Anyone who wants a stable, long-term maintained project; anyone afraid of getting a lawyer's letter; and anyone hoping to make money from it. Tools like this get watched more closely by their host the more commercial they become.

- **How to do it** : Users have already asked for TraeWork and Qoder versions in WorkDaddy's issues (#184, #308). That's a ready-made topic. Build to its feature list: one-click account switching, sessions that follow you, do-not-disturb background running, reconnect-and-resume, plus some nice themes. Make sensitive features (auto check-in, claiming rewards) off by default, add risk warnings, and don't spell things out too bluntly in the README.

- **How to get users** : First, post on linux.do under the "open source promotion" tag with clear screenshots. Then wait for Chinese tool accounts on Bilibili, X, and Xiaohongshu to repost it, or reach out to them yourself. Every time the host runs a free promotion or changes credit rules is a good time to update your post.

- **When to go in early** : In the first month or two after the host takes off. WorkDaddy entered five months after WorkBuddy launched and still took off, but it was only two days behind workbuddy-switch. On the same host, the one that does the most within the first wave takes most of the share.

- **What would mean you read it wrong** : If Tencent bans accounts widely in the near term or blocks injection altogether, and WorkDaddy's stars and downloads drop with it. Or if, on the next host you pick, a general multi-account tool like cockpit-tools has already absorbed the demand, then this model doesn't hold.

## WorkDaddy (babygoton/WorkDaddy): why it took off

> Research date 2026-11-06. Channel: GitHub. Data sources: our GitHub database (repo_day, from 2026-10-09), GitHub API (live as of 2026-11-06), linux.do, X, Jina search results.

### One line

WorkDaddy is a third-party "add-on" for Tencent's WorkBuddy / CodeBuddy desktop clients. It injects a panel into the official Electron client via local CDP. Its core selling points are **one-click multi-account switching + credit/check-in status + cross-account session handoff + unattended, no-interruption operation** . It rides the big traffic of WorkBuddy (launched 2026-03, September MAU 32.4M) and the demand for **multi-account credit farming** created by its free-credits-plus-check-in mechanics. It cold-started on linux.do, then spread organically through Chinese tool accounts and download sites on Bilibili, Xiaohongshu, and X.

### 1. Data

- Stars: 2026-11-06 per GitHub API 2762, forks 303, watchers only 4. The data card reads 11-06 as 2691: +320 over the last 7 days (+202 over the 7 days before that), and 11-06 alone added +105, the highest single-day figure on record.

- Curve: repo created 2026-08-18; by 10-09 it had 1751 (repo_day, GitHub database), meaning it gained about 1750,10-09 in the first 52 days and then another 940 up to 11-06. The fastest stretch was September: issues by month were August 18, September 248, October 119, November 15 (GitHub issues, 400+ total).

- **Real usage is far bigger than the star count suggests** : Releases asset downloads total about **115k** (GitHub API, summed across each version's assets, 2026-11-06). Of those, 1.2.18 (10-24 release) account for 27,273 downloads, 1.2.11 has 15,176, and 1.2.15 has 10,289. Releases are very frequent: 37 versions shipped in 80 days.

- The stargazer list endpoint returns 404 and does not expose the time of each star, so the timeline can only be inferred from our daily data and the issue cadence.

- Author babygoton: GitHub account registered in 2017, 33 followers, only this one repository; commit email richdaddycashmany@163.com; linux.do ID is sunofbeach. Not a big-name creator and no resource backing.

### II. Competitors: a crowded "WorkBuddy credit farming" track

GitHub search for workbuddy, sorted by stars (2026-11-06), shows a long list of similar tools:

| Product | Form | Launched | Scale | How it differs from WorkDaddy |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| changexbc/workbuddy-switch | Open-source desktop tools | 2026-08-16 (2 days before WorkDaddy) | 1768★, 10-09→11-06 +679; listed on winget, with posts on Zhihu | A standalone account-switching utility that only does switching, session copying, credit monitoring, and a floating window; it does not inject into the client and has no no-interruption mode, theming, or handoff |
| linguo2625469/workbuddy2api-panel | Open-source gateway | 2026-09-12 | 4722★, +2464 over the same period | Reverse-proxies an account pool into an OpenAI-compatible API and auto-completes task-center tasks; its users are people who feed free credits into Claude Code / Codex, not people working inside WorkBuddy |
| ardeyouxipianyi/workbuddy2api-hub | Open-source gateway | 2026-09-12 | 3581★, +2850 over the same period (fastest-growing in this track) | Same as above, a reverse-proxy gateway; reports on X already claim the proxy got accounts banned |
| ithtelab/workbuddy-manager | Open-source console | 2026-09-11 | 2438★, +1817 since 9-28 | Account pool management + reverse proxy + key distribution, leaning toward "distribute to others" |
| 88lin/workbuddy-auto-signin | Open-source script | 2026-08-18 | 1993★, +950 over the same period | Only does automatic check-ins and claims growth-center rewards, taking to the extreme the part WorkDaddy later removed |
| jlcodes99/cockpit-tools | Open-source general tool | 2026-01-16 | 19741★ | General multi-account manager for AI IDEs (Antigravity / Codex / Cursor / CodeBuddy…); a YouTube tutorial shows people using it to manage WorkBuddy accounts; no interface enhancements specific to WorkBuddy |
| xmgzxmgz/workbuddy-account-hub, Harvey-Will/workbuddy-tools | Open source | 2026-08-19 / 09-14 | 29★ / 37★ | Similar features, didn't take off |
| WorkBuddy official | Big-company features | 2026-03-09 | MAU 32.4M (QuestMobile, September) | The official app supports multiple accounts itself, but switching requires closing the app, replacing auth files, and restarting (quoted from a Zhihu article); no cross-account session migration |

Takeaway: **lots of competitors, but most are "back-end tools"** (account switchers, check-in scripts, reverse-proxy gateways). WorkDaddy is the only one that **injects into the official client's UI** as an "enhanced WorkBuddy," covering four clients (domestic and international WorkBuddy, CodeBuddy CN, CodeBuddy) with installers for macOS, Windows, and Linux.

### 3. Where users come from (growth levers)

1. **linux.do cold start (confirmed)** : 2026-08-20 (day 2 after the repo was created), author sunofbeach posted "[Open-source promo] WorkDaddy: built-in enhancement tool for WorkBuddy" on linux.do, with 240 replies, 8418 views, and 435 likes (linux.do API). linux.do is the community where Chinese "farm AI quota" users are most concentrated, and the same site has posts like "workbuddy reverse-proxy account-farming tutorial."

2. **Chinese tool accounts / creators spreading it organically (confirmed)** :
    - X @fhwofjow51260 "Namei Knowledge Base"2026-08-23 tweet: "One-click multi-account switching, auto-claim daily credits……"
    - X @cj3214567667 "Bai Jun Knowledge Sharing"2026-11-05 tweet, 15.8K views, original words: "You can register a few more WB accounts and aggregate them all into an account pool……automatic seamless switching." The timing falls right on the day before the 11-06 single-day peak of +105, so it was likely the main source of that peak (inferred).
    - Bilibili "Must-have plugin for heavy WorkBuddy users! One-click multi-account credit farming · themes · enhancement toolkit, open-source and free, use WorkDaddy" (BV1858R6jEg4), posted by a tool-focused UP creator who runs a "GitHub weekly trending / optimize your PC for fans" series.
    - The 8.27 daily report from 什么值得买 says "the same open-source enhancement plugin appears with two different usage guides on Bilibili and Xiaohongshu."

3. **Download sites / SEO mirrors (confirmed)** : software sites such as xzji.com and jamecling.com index "WorkDaddy download - WorkBuddy multi-account switching tool"; the official site workdaddy.dev also has an interactive demo.

4. **Riding the host platform's events (inferred, backed by evidence)** : WorkBuddy ran a free Hy4 promo for two weeks starting 8-28 (X @TencentHunyuan, "Free for 2 weeks"), and in September a big wave of "free credits" guides came out (Tencent News 9-15, among others). WorkDaddy's September issue count (248) is more than 2 times any other month, matching the heat from the free-access and check-in waves. In addition, each WorkBuddy upgrade (5.6, 5.9) broke the add-on, sending users to the issues; the author shipped a fix the same day, which kept them around.

5. No ads found, no HN / Reddit English-language coverage, and it has not entered GitHub trending. Our database shows trending_days_any=0; GitHub trending only includes repos about 60 days after creation, and this repo only reached 60 days in October.

### 4. Why it took off

- **Large host** : WorkBuddy has 32.4M MAU, 92% of which is desktop; credits are billed by usage and can be earned through daily check-ins. This creates strong demand for stacking credits across accounts and gives a desktop add-on enough users to work with.

- **Real, high-frequency pain points** : official account switching requires scanning a code and restarting; tasks stop when credits run out; long tasks get stuck on permission prompts; replies stop when the network drops. WorkDaddy solves all of this from one panel: switch accounts with a click, sessions carry over to the new account, no interruptions, automatic resumption. User stickiness comes from "switching accounts every day and running unattended overnight."

- **The experience lives inside the client** : it injects via CDP without modifying the official installer. Users feel that "WorkBuddy just got better" rather than that they've added another tool. Themes, frosted-glass effects, prompt staging, and similar "nice to look at and nice to use" features also lower the bar compared with reverse-proxy gateways, so ordinary office users can use it, not just developers.

- **Fast iteration** : 37 versions in 80 days; it follows official client updates usually the same day or the next day; it accepts PRs, with 9+ contributors. Download count (about 115k) is far larger than stars, showing that users are mostly ordinary people who don't know GitHub.

- **Proactively downplaying the most sensitive features** : 1.2.3 (9-19) removed "auto-claim daily credits" from the README and replaced it with "check-in / growth plan lookup"; the check-in task in automation is now disabled by default and warns about risk before it can be enabled. The official subscription policy explicitly bans bulk registration and abnormal reward claiming. This preserves a compliant appearance while keeping the status display users want. The cost is that some users ask "where is the check-in feature?" (issues #498, #440).

### 5. Differentiation

Most competitors are "back-end account switchers / check-in scripts / API reverse proxies." WorkDaddy is an **enhancement layer injected into the official UI** that handles the whole experience of "working inside WorkBuddy": switching, session handoff, unattended operation, and themes. That is why its download count reached the hundreds of thousands among ordinary users. In terms of stars, though, reverse-proxy gateways (workbuddy2api-hub / -panel) grew faster over the past month, suggesting developers would rather "pull the credits out and give them to other tools." WorkDaddy captured a different group: **non-developers who still work inside WorkBuddy** . So differentiation is genuinely why it took off; the direction it took off in is downloads, not the top of the star chart.

### 6. Visibility and copycats

- Visibility: **it's spreading in small circles** . Chinese tool accounts and download sites on linux.do, Bilibili, and X carry it; there is no media coverage, and nothing turns up in the X large-account corpus (x-radar); no revenue is public, since it's a free open-source project.

- Copycats: workbuddy-account-hub (8-19) and workbuddy-tools (9-14) have nearly identical features and didn't take off; general multi-account tools like cockpit-tools already support WorkBuddy / CodeBuddy.

- Users are asking for TraeWork / Qoder versions (issues #184, #308), which points to the next target that can be copied.

### VII. What to take away

- **"Hit client from a big tech company + credit/quota system" = add-on opportunity** : once the host takes off, its billing loopholes (multiple accounts, check-ins, free-access promos) and UX gaps (switching, unattended runs, pop-ups) spawn a wave of tools. Whoever first builds "injection inside the client" and covers multiple platform installers wins ordinary users.

- Pick the right cold-start community (linux.do's "open-source promo" tag), then let tool accounts spread it organically.

- Keep sensitive features off by default, add risk warnings, and downplay them in the README to lower the risk of being targeted by the host.

- Ship the same day as every host update and use the issues section as customer support.

### 8. Not sure

- Whether Tencent will block CDP injection or bulk accounts (issue #489 mentions the "Buddy One" redesign, and X already has reports of reverse-proxy accounts being banned); WorkDaddy's own users have also reported suspected bans (#265, #311). The lifespan of the whole track depends on the host.

- Without the stargazer timeline, whether the 11-06 peak came from X posts or from the 1.2.19 release can only be inferred.

- The exact number of Xiaohongshu notes and their engagement were not verified; Bilibili video play counts were not obtained (the API rejected the request).

- Download counts include auto-updates and repeat downloads, so they are not the same as unique users.
