A Douyin creator with 54k followers spent three months building an AI girlfriend called 'Xiaoya' into a short-video character. The day DeepSeek Harness went open source, they turned her into a plugin and posted it on GitHub. The repo barely moved in September. In mid-October, two Chinese AI creators on X said 'AI is going live on Douyin on its own,' and the stars finally jumped. Below: what it is, where the stars really came from, why similar plugins didn't take off, and what you can take from it if you want stars for an open-source project.

### A post at midnight

At 00:03 Beijing time on Oct 12, 2026, Chinese AI blogger @xiangxiang103 posted on X that they had already put "Cyber Xiaoya" live on Douyin. The post got 296k views and 929 likes. The next afternoon, another account, @huoshan007 (Huoshan Ge), reposted nearly the same copy, which got 106k views.

A month earlier, the GitHub repo beiyege-01/dsh-voice-ai-girlfriend had been gaining only 0 to 6 stars a day. After the post, 10-12 +17, 10-13 +15, 10-14 +33, 10-15 +67,10-16. Single-day +171. It hit #21 on trendshift's daily TypeScript chart (trendshift daily table). By 11-06, the repo had 962 stars and 282 forks (GitHub, 11-06).

### What it is

A 'voice AI girlfriend' plugin for DeepSeek Harness (DSH below, an agent tool DeepSeek open-sourced in August, now at 275k stars), plus a full voice stack that runs on your own computer:

- Listen: FunASR Chinese speech recognition, with a noise gate and VAD, so she stops when you interrupt.

- Speak: OmniVoice clones a voice and streams it out one sentence at a time.

- Move: a side window with a digital human. DUIX turns replies into real-time lip-synced talking video.

- Follow: pushes replies (text plus voice) to your QQ via NapCat.

The README's first line is Xiaoya introducing herself: 'Hi, I'm Xiaoya. From now on, DeepSeek Harness isn't just your coding buddy. It can talk now.'

The bar is not low. The README says 'this project won't install without an NVIDIA GPU.' It recommends 16GB of VRAM, and the full pipeline peaks around 15GB in testing. It needs Windows 11 + WSL2 + Docker. There are 6 issues in total, and they ask when Mac will be supported, whether a 4070Ti 16G card can run it, and whether there's a group chat. The third-party plugin directory dsh-suite lists it as 'broken' (the plugin doesn't load). Forks are 29% of stars, but I'd guess few people actually run it.

### Xiaoya went viral a month before the repo did

### Douyin didn't bring the stars

This is the most important thing to remember about this project: **a Douyin video with nearly ten thousand likes gained only single-digit stars in the same period** . What really pushed the stars up was Chinese AI creators on X who use GitHub. Douyin viewers like and say 'so cute,' but they don't go to GitHub to star anything. X readers click through to the repo and star it and fork it.

So what was Douyin for? It built the character. X creators were willing to retweet because there was a ready-made story that's easy to retell: 'one person, two months, one consumer GPU, AI goes live on Douyin on its own,' with a screen recording of the stream. Without those three months on Douyin, that story couldn't be told.

The second wave came from the "make money" angle. In 10-20, bloggers didn't push it as an AI girlfriend, they pushed it as a "digital human account-growing tool." The top of the README now has a line: "No official group chat, no paid courses, no installation services. Anything charging under the name of 'internal edition,' 'licensed edition,' or 'deployment for you' is not from the author." That means people were already charging for it.

The rest is long tail: DSH plugin directories like dsh-hub.cc and awesome-dsh-plugin, auto-generated explainer posts on CSDN, the author's own doc site. Together they bring in about ten stars a day. I saw no sign of star-farming or paid promotion.

### Why similar projects didn't take off

Since DSH went open source, a dozen or so have built 'DSH voice' features:

Zooming out, mature open-source 'cyber wife' projects already exist at the top: moeru-ai/airi with 51k stars and Open-LLM-VTuber with 14.6k stars. Technically, both are more mature than this one.

The clearest proof is ai-girlfriend-v2. It does nearly the same thing and has 81 stars. The gap isn't features, it's **having a character who already has an audience** . Building out every feature only helps the people who do click through hold on.

### Others are already copying it

Same-name repos HenryVarro666/dsh-voice-ai-girlfriend (10-22,0 stars), "AI Girlfriend V3" (10-12,2 stars), and a live-avatar clone from a Zhihu author. On Douyin, other creators are posting with #赛博小雅, and the author 10-13 has publicly asked people not to use Xiaoya's image or voice. They're copying the code straight across, and none of them has gotten any stars yet.

**Verdict** : C. There's a clear playbook to learn from, but copying it wholesale isn't worth it. The project's stars came from a short-video character built over three months. The code has no moat, and the 'DSH AI girlfriend' slot is already taken by this project.
