# X's design lead posted a tweet, and a skill that teaches AI to draw "fake interfaces" climbed to 2000 stars in a week. What you can learn is the method; what you can't copy is that tweet

**What it is** A skill for coding agents like Claude Code, Codex, and Cursor that teaches them to build product-like fake interface illustrations and animations with React, and to take frame-by-frame screenshots of their own work to check it.

**Why it took off** The author is the design lead at X and SpaceXSI. He posted a before-and-after video tweet (1.56M views, 26k bookmarks), which was then picked up by Chinese big accounts and repost accounts on Instagram and YouTube. Installing the skill takes only one command.

**C** **How you could follow it** Don't port it; learn its skeleton. Pick a narrow scene where AI does a bad job (app store screenshots, share cards, charts), write it up as one principle plus five ways it breaks plus good-vs-bad example pairs, add a self-check script that gives measurable results, and use before-and-after videos to get repost accounts to share it.

C tier: the traction came from the author's identity and his followers, which followers can't get. The existing Svelte, JS, and Chinese ports have 0 to 5 stars, and unknown projects with the same topic have only 465 stars. The method of writing skills is worth learning; copying the project directly isn't worth it. Publicly disclosed / widely discussed

Stageshow is an agent skill Benji Taylor put on GitHub. It teaches coding agents like Claude Code, Codex, and Cursor to build the "fake product interface" animations you see on landing-page heroes. In 11 days it gained 2,191 stars and nearly 13k installs. It's well made, but almost all of the stars came from the author himself: he's the design lead at X, and he has 230k followers there. Anyone hoping to get stars for their open-source project can learn a method for writing skills from it; copying it and building another one will almost certainly not earn stars.

### A tweet with 1.55M views

On Oct 2026 31 18:08 (UTC), Benji Taylor posted a tweet on X with two lines of text:

> "Stageshow: a skill that helps your agent make better fake UI stills, animations, and bento grids." `npx skills add benjitaylor/skills --skill stageshow`

Below it was a set of before-and-after videos: the same prompt, what the agent produced without the skill versus with it, plus small scenes he recreated from Figma, Gmail, Finder, and Spotify. By Nov 6, the tweet had 1.56M views, 14.3k likes, and 26.3k bookmarks (public fxtwitter API, 11-06). Bookmarks were about double the likes, which means people saved it as a tool rather than liking it and moving on.

The repo was created on Oct 26, but the first commit came on Oct 30. Here's how its stars grew after the tweet (GitHub daily stars):

| Date | Stars | Added that day |
|---|---|---|
| 11-02 | 419 | — |
| 11-03 | 771 | +352 |
| 11-04 | 1,330 | +559 |
| 11-05 | 1,863 | +533 |
| 11-06 | 2,085 (2,191,157 forks later that same day) | +222 |

More people installed it than starred it: `benjitaylor/skills/stageshow` was installed 12,886 times on skills.sh (11-06), about 6 times the star count. Most people installed it with one command and left without going back to GitHub to star it.

### What it actually is

One SKILL.md, plus a set of React widgets, dozens of examples, and a few check scripts. The intro on the author's page at benji.org/stageshow is blunt:

> "Most good models can already do this without a dedicated skill, but what they make often looks sloppy or overdone. Stageshow fills that gap."

You ask for one small thing: "one product, one action, one size," e.g. "a looping mini-animation for the website hero: someone assigns a ticket to a teammate." The agent reads the skill, starts from the closest example, shoots its own "film," and revises when it spots problems. What comes out is a plain React component you can drop into your site, not a rendered mp4.

Three things stand out:

- **A one-line principle, plus five ways it goes wrong.** "Looks like a real product, simplified only to what the viewer needs, framed with intent, every motion has a cause." The five failure modes: too full (every cell filled with real text), too empty (looks like a wireframe), boxed in (the whole window shrunk into a card, like a pasted screenshot), too flat (everything carries the same weight), too faint (the style asked for in the prompt never shows up). Seven steps follow.

- **It checks its own footage.** `film.mjs` lays the whole animation out frame by frame as one contact sheet and reports measurable problems; `jumps.mjs` finds single-frame jumps you can't see on the sheet; `layout.mjs` checks whether text and buttons overflow their boxes. Most design skills give the agent text rules. This one lets the agent look at every frame in the middle of the animation.

- **A side-by-side playground of bad versus good.** The same thing done wrong and done right, next to each other. The author's point: rules like "don't shrink the whole app into a card" get nodded at and forgotten, but two versions side by side stick.

The author also says upfront that one try won't always get it right. He usually needs a few rounds of feedback even on his own demos.

### Where the stars came from

**First, the author himself.** Benji Taylor is now Head of Design at X and SpaceXSI. Before that he led design for Base at Coinbase, and before that he founded the Family wallet, which Aave acquired. When he joined X in March, Musk personally posted a welcome (Times of India covered it). Since then almost every repost and write-up has led with his title: "Head of Design at X just shared…" People are passing around "the taste of X's design head," and the specific feature is secondary.

He's no newcomer in this circle either. Under the same account, agentation (a visual feedback tool for agents, from January) has 5.3k stars and 20.9k installs on skills.sh; liveline has 1k stars. Emil Kowalski, another leading figure in design engineering (his own skills repo has 54k stars), left a reply under the post: "Such a great idea."

**Second, Chinese-language accounts and repost accounts carried it further.** On Nov 1, the Chinese X account 歸藏 @op7418 (187k followers) posted an introduction that got 36.5k views; @shao__meng published a Chinese explainer the same day; Taiwanese Threads accounts and Chinese Instagram reels followed. Instagram and Facebook filled up with lead-gen posts ("comment LINK and I'll send you the repo"), and YouTube Shorts had "comment UI and I'll send the link." AlphaSignal covered it on Nov 5. The star peaks came on 11-04 and 11-05, not the day of the post, which lines up with this second wave of spread and with the v1.1.0 release 11-04. We don't have daily numbers before 11-02, so the delayed peak is an inference.

**Third, installing a skill now takes one command.** `npx skills add` goes through Vercel's skills.sh installer, which works with Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini, and Grok Build. One reply under the post reads: "that install line is the real product." "AI-made interfaces look like slop" is already accepted wisdom, and taste skills like taste-skill and impeccable have six-figure star counts. Users are used to starring the "taste" skills of prominent people.

**Fourth, the demo itself is the ad.** The skill's output is attractive product animation. A before-and-after video needs no explanation, and it spreads on X and Instagram on its own.

### Who else is doing the same thing

| Project | Scale (11-06) | Versus Stageshow |
|---|---|---|
| nextlevelbuilder/ui-ux-pro-max-skill | 146k stars, 440k installs | Style and palette libraries, broad but shallow |
| Leonxlnx/taste-skill | 111k stars, 740k installs | Covers whole-site frontend aesthetics, not product illustration or animation specifically |
| pbakaus/impeccable | 104k stars, 390k installs | A design vocabulary plus polish and review commands |
| heygen-com/hyperframes | 79K stars | A general framework for rendering HTML to video |
| emilkowalski/skills | 54k stars, 420k installs | Design engineering and animation review, with no widget library or shooting tool |
| Vincentwei1021/video-shotcraft | 17K stars | Uses Remotion to make product promo videos, outputs mp4 |
| shadcn-labs/snapcn | 577 stars | A product-demo component library for Remotion |
| Alexwtlf/agentic-product-demo | 465 stars | Same idea of having an agent make product demos, but via video, and without a famous backer |

The last row says the most: in August someone already published nearly the same topic, with 465 stars. Stageshow's 2,000 stars aren't especially many within its category. What's unusual is that its stars are concentrated after a single post.

People have already built on it: a Svelte port on Nov 1 (all 69 scenes ported), a plain-JS version on Nov 2, a Chinese WorkBuddy version on Nov 5, and some have bundled it unchanged into their own skill collections. 116 SKILL.md files on GitHub mention it. These repos all sit at 0 to 5 stars.

### If it were you

**One conclusion:** don't copy it, learn from how it's written. Those 2,000 stars came from the author's identity and that one post, and followers can't get them. Ports to other frameworks and languages have been tried already, and they're all in single-digit stars.

**Who it fits:** developers and designers with real hands-on work in a specific scenario who have actually hit the pitfalls, such as people who have made lots of App Store screenshots, OG share cards, data charts, slide decks, or email templates, and can write down the "hundred small decisions."

**Who it doesn't fit:** people without their own experience who just want to port Stageshow to another framework, and people who want to tackle "whole-site aesthetics," a big topic where several six-figure-star projects already exist.

**How to do it:**

1. Pick a scenario where AI clearly does a poor job and the problem is specific. Stageshow covers "fake interfaces for marketing," and the neighboring topics are still open: App Store screenshots, social share cards, dashboard charts, keynote-style feature comparisons.

2. Follow its skeleton: a one-line principle, five common failure modes, a set of steps, and dozens of good-versus-bad examples. Put the reasons after the rules.

3. Include a measurable self-check script (measure alignment, overflow, and contrast from screenshots) so the agent can verify its own output. This is where it separates itself from most skills, and it's the part people most like to repost.

4. Support one-line install with `npx skills add`, and put the before-and-after comparison on the first screen of the README.

**How to get users:** post a before-and-after video, with the same prompt run once with the skill and once without, and the install command at the end. You don't have 230k followers, so borrow other people's accounts: Chinese AI tool bloggers (the 歸藏 type), and the GitHub roundup accounts on Instagram and YouTube that run "comment for the link." They're always short on material, so just DM them the video. Then write a longer intro page so media and repost accounts can write from it directly.

**When to launch:** the author admits that as models' taste improves, skills like this will eventually be unnecessary. The "give the agent taste" wave probably has a few months left (an inference), so aim to ship before year-end.

**Signs you've misjudged it:** two weeks after your comparison video goes out, no roundup account has reposted it and the stars are stuck in double digits. That means the scenario isn't painful enough or the visuals aren't clear enough. Conversely, if agentic-product-demo, a lesser-known peer, also climbs over the next month, that shows the topic itself has demand. Then don't route around it. Build "the part Stageshow didn't do well."

## Why benjitaylor/skills (Stageshow) took off

Date: 2026-11-06 · Channel: GitHub · Repo: [github.com/benjitaylor/skills](https://github.com/benjitaylor/skills)

### One line

This repo ships one skill so far: Stageshow, a SKILL.md for coding agents plus a React widget, dozens of examples, and a script that screenshots animations frame by frame to check them. It teaches the agent to build "fake product UIs": hero animations for landing pages, feature cards, demos with a moving cursor, bento grids. It runs almost entirely on its author's reach. Benji Taylor is design lead at X and SpaceXSI and has 232k followers on X. A demo video he posted 10-31 got 1.56M views, 14.3k likes and 26.3k bookmarks, and repost accounts on Chinese platforms, Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube Shorts have picked it up since.

### Key facts

- 2026-10-26 the repo was created, 10-30 the first commit "Add Stageshow" went in, and 10-31 18:08 UTC the author posted (GitHub API, fxtwitter).

- Star counts come from our GitHub repo_day data: 11-02 is 419,11-03, 771 is 352 (+11-04), 1330 is 559 (+11-05, the single-day peak), 1863 is 533 (+11-06), and 2085 is 222 (+11-06). The live GitHub API shows 2191 stars and 157 forks.

- Installs: the skills.sh search API shows `benjitaylor/skills/stageshow` with 12,886 installs (the author's profile page shows 13.3K; 11-06 scraped), roughly 6 times the star count. Most people installed it directly with `npx skills add` and never came back to GitHub to star it.

- Versions: 11-04 released v1.1.0 (new Button, Card, Divider, Kbd, Draft and other widgets, stricter checks), and 11-05 released v1.1.1 (fixed issue #6). The author is still maintaining it.

- No suspicious star-boosting signals: suspect is empty, fork/star ratio about 7%.

- The repo is under 60 days old, so it isn't on GitHub trending (see the library notes on trending rules). The traction has nothing to do with trending.

### Why it took off

#### 1. Celebrity effect: the author is the distribution channel (confirmed)

- Benji Taylor's own bio (benji.org): currently Head of Design at X and SpaceXSI, part of SpaceX; previously led design for Base at Coinbase; before that founded the Family wallet, later acquired by Aave (LinkedIn, yespress). When he 2026-03 joined X, Musk personally posted a welcome (Times of India).

- The original post [x.com/benjitaylor/status/2116593247854453244:155.8](https://x.com/benjitaylor/status/2116593247854453244:155.8) had 14,345 views, 745 likes, 26,306 reposts and 11-06 bookmarks (fxtwitter). Bookmarks are close to double the likes, so people are saving it as a tool to use, not just liking it.

- Media and reposts almost all lead with his title, as in "Head of Design at X just shared…" (two LinkedIn posts from noohelhadedy and stasbel; several Instagram reels; aicoder.com's coverage of 10-31; AlphaSignal and hermes-ai.net's coverage 11-05). Many people shared it because of "the taste of X's design lead," not because of any specific feature.

- He has a track record in this niche: the same author's agentation (a visual feedback tool for agents, 2026-01) has 5.3k stars and 20.9k installs on skills.sh; liveline has 1k stars. He's already known as "the person who makes agent design tools." Emil Kowalski, a head figure in design engineering (his own skills repo has 54k stars), commented under the tweet, "Such a great idea."

#### 2. Secondary distribution: Chinese-language circles and "comment for the link" repost accounts (confirmed)

- On Chinese X: @op7418 (187k followers) 11-01 posted an intro, 36.5k views and 252 likes; meng shao @shao__meng 11-01 wrote a Chinese breakdown. Taiwan's Threads account @kufutw and Instagram Chinese reels are covering it too.

- Instagram and Facebook lead-gen posts ("Comment LINK and I'll send you the repo" style: instagram.com/p/DfNBd6RD_W_, reel DfSDoHXu7Te, DfNMg7HjeG8), plus YouTube Shorts saying "Comment \"UI\" and I'll send you the link."

- Star peaks fell at 11-04 and 11-05, not at the launch on 10-31 and 11-01. That lines up in time with the secondary reposts, 11-04, the v1.1.0 release, and 11-05 AlphaSignal coverage. However, we have no day-by-day data from 10-31 to 11-01, only a cumulative total of 11-02 stars as of 419, so "the peak shifted later" is an inference.

#### 3. Timing: Agent Skills is already a common format, and install is a one-line command (confirmed)

- `npx skills add benjitaylor/skills --skill stageshow` goes through the skills.sh installer from Vercel Labs and supports dozens of agents, including Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini, and Grok Build. @stretchcloud's comment put it bluntly: "that install line is the real product."

- "AI-made interfaces look like slop" is already a shared pain point. taste-skill (111k stars), impeccable (104k stars), and emilkowalski/skills (54k stars) have validated the "give agents taste" approach. Users are already used to starring and installing "design taste skills" from well-known people.

#### 4. The demo is the ad (confirmed)

The tweet is a series of before-and-after videos: the same prompt without and with the skill. The author also recreated small scenes from Figma, Gmail, Finder, and Spotify. The skill's output is inherently polished product animation, so it's naturally suited to spreading through video on X and Instagram.

### Differentiation

- **Narrow scope** : it doesn't cover overall frontend aesthetics, only "fake product UI for marketing, one action, one frame." taste-skill, impeccable, and ui-ux-pro-max cover whole-site aesthetics; video-shotcraft, hyperframes, and the Remotion family cover video. Stageshow outputs an ordinary React component that can go straight onto a website, not a rendered mp4.

- **Checks its own footage** : film.mjs renders the whole animation into a frame-by-frame contact sheet and reports problems, jumps.mjs finds frame-to-frame jumps, and layout.mjs checks for text overflow. Most skills only have text rules; this one lets the agent look at the intermediate frames of the animation.

- **Gold examples + contrast pairs** : dozens of gold examples and a playground. Good and bad approaches sit side by side for both agents and humans to compare.

- **Restrained writing** : "one-sentence principle + five ways it goes wrong (Too much / Wireframe / Boxed / Flat / Bland) + a seven-step process."

- But the main reason it took off isn't these differentiators. It's the author's identity and that video tweet. Three pieces of evidence: first, stars and installs all clustered after the launch tweet; second, its star count (2.1k) is far below comparable design skills; third, nearly all the secondary coverage only mentions "X's design lead." Differentiation determines whether it gets bookmarked (bookmarks are 1.8 times likes) and why others copy it.

### Copycats (already appearing)

- maven-ammar/svelte-stageshow (11-01, Svelte 5 port, all 69 scenes ported)

- rizaardiyanto1412/stageshow-js (11-02, plain JS version)

- hope0719/stageshow-workbuddy (11-05, Chinese WorkBuddy version)

- SystemOfADesign/design-pack (11-02, packages Stageshow unchanged into its own marketplace)

- playful-design/router/stageshow (45 installs on skills.sh), arm1383/stageshow-skills

- GitHub code search finds 116 SKILL.md files mentioning stageshow, mostly in large collection repos (sickn33/agentic-awesome-skills, aiskillstore/marketplace, etc.) that bundled it.

- All the copycats have between 0 and 5 stars, so they haven't split the traffic.

### Visibility

This is already widely discussed: the launch tweet got 1.55M views; aicoder and AlphaSignal covered it; the Chinese big account 歸藏 reposted it; multiple Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube repost accounts are talking about it; and it has already been ported. This isn't an unknown opportunity. It is, however, a free open-source project with no revenue involved.

### What to borrow

1. "Narrow topic + a big name's taste": pick a specific scenario AI visibly does badly, and write hand-earned experience into five failure modes and a seven-step process.

2. Have the skill ship with a self-check tool (frame-by-frame capture, jump detection, overflow testing), not just text rules.

3. Launch with before-and-after videos, and end with a one-line install command. The output of a design skill is itself the distribution material.

4. Keep a long-form page updated alongside the product (benji.org/stageshow); media and repost accounts write straight from it.

### Still unclear

- Day-by-day star counts from 10-31 to 11-01 weren't observed, and the specific source of the 11-04 peak (which repost or newsletter) can't be quantified.

- skills.sh install counts include CI runs and repeat installs, so they don't equal real user numbers.

- Retention and actual usage are unknown, and the author himself expects "this skill won't be needed once models' taste improves."

- The x-radar local corpus didn't receive related tweets; all tweet data comes from the public fxtwitter API.
