# A percentage that keeps climbing: how "PS5 games running natively on PC" got 50k stars in three months

**What it is** An open source tool that converts decrypted PS5 game executables into native Windows / Linux programs. It rewrites the system libraries and translates shaders to Vulkan. It is not an emulator.

**Why it blew up** GTA VI is console-only and Sony has stopped making discs, which made "PS5 games on PC" a mainstream topic. The project's "not emulation, runs natively" pitch, plus a completion percentage that ticks up every day, got it repeatedly shared on Reddit and in media. AI agents submitting tens of thousands of PRs made the progress real.

**B** **How you could follow it** Don't build another PS5 port. Pick a platform pair nobody has covered much (say Switch 2 → PC), or take a nostalgic game that never got a PC version and do a native port. Copy its progress badge and AI contribution workflow. If you're worried about legal risk, apply the same workflow to a large engineering project that doesn't touch game copyright.

Grade B: the legal line is clear, and in October the native-port projects that followed it reached one thousand to over ten thousand stars each. In November a new Switch 2 project got 430 stars in four days. But real reverse engineering carries DMCA risk at any time, and the whole category is cooling off. Public / widely discussed

boykopovar/AnyPS5 is an open source tool built by a developer in Belarus. It converts PS5 game executables directly into Windows / Linux programs. It isn't an emulator. To date only one game is officially confirmed to run on it, yet in October it gained about 20k stars in a single week, and it is now at 11-06 stars, having stopped at 51,433. What got it going wasn't "it runs games". It was three things you can learn: a technical pitch that's clear in one sentence, a progress number that changes every day, and a contribution workflow where AI coding agents do the work. Below: what it is, where the stars came from, who's following it, and whether you can build something the same way.

### A title with a percentage

In Oct 2026 (6 UTC), Hacker News user Fe2O3 posted "AnyPS5: Port PS5 binaries to PC without emulation (87% system libraries mapped)". The post got 375 points and 326 comments. The most-replied comments weren't about the technology. They were about one thing:

> "GTA 6 is coming out on PS5, right? If everything gets cracked on day one, who's paying for software anymore?"

> "I've been in the PlayStation hacking scene for a long time, and holy crap, this is big news... If this lets me play GTA 6 on PC within a few months of its release, I'll be thrilled."

Someone else warned everyone to clone a local backup right away: "That's exactly how Yuzu and Ryujinx got taken down by legal threats."

Two days later Futurism ran "Sony in Trouble" and tied it to GTA VI. On Oct 10 Tom's Hardware reported "GPU shader instruction coverage at 100%." That week it hit #2 on GitHub's daily trending and #1,10-10 weekly. Its biggest single day was +4,715 stars, the highest it has ever had (GitHub daily stars).

### What it is

The PS5 CPU is AMD Zen 2, the same x86-64 instruction set as a regular PC. So AnyPS5 doesn't emulate a PS5. It does three things: relinks the game's executable into native PC format; rewrites each PS5 system library as a dynamic library PC can load; and translates shaders offline into SPIR-V for Vulkan. Tom's Hardware's comparison: "Proton for consoles."

Users supply their own decrypted game dumps. The project ships no Sony code and is GPL-2.0. The README links a web converter, "your files never leave your computer," where you just drop in a ZIP. Besides English, the README is also in Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, Simplified Chinese, Russian, and Indonesian.

Does it actually run games? At the first demo in late September, a commercial game showed its logo and started loading the main menu, then crashed around frame 168 (per roundups from shattered.io). By mid-October, the official compatibility list confirmed only one game as playable: the indie title Dreaming Sarah. Some users built the main branch themselves and got Hollow Knight: Silksong to about frame 60, but that isn't a release. Four official releases have been downloaded about 198k times in total (GitHub Releases, 11-06). Lots of people tried it, few actually played.

### How the stars came

| Timeline | Stars | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| 08-03 | 0 | Built the library. In August only the author was writing the relinker. |
| 09-24 ~ 27 | — | On X, Techjunkie Aman posted about it. VideoCardz, Tom's Hardware, KitGuru, and NotebookCheck all covered it within four days. On Reddit, r/pcmasterrace and r/emulation circulated "Dead Cells running natively on Windows." |
| 09-28 | 1,922 | Shipped the first official release, v0.1.1 |
| 10-06 | — | Hacker News: 375 points |
| 10-08 | — | Futurism tied it to GTA VI |
| 10-09 | 19,676 | GitHub-wide daily #2, weekly #1 |
| 10-10 | 24,391 | +4,715 in one day; Tom's Hardware reported shaders at 100% |
| 10-16 | 39,204 | Daily gains fell from 3,668 to 1,504 |
| 11-06 | 51,433 | Last 7 days +1,940, the 7 days before that +3,332. It's cooling. |

(GitHub daily stars and trending chart; 4,896 forks.)

Media covered it once in late September, but then it had only a thousand-plus stars. The real jump to twenty thousand came in early October, just after the repo turned two months old. GitHub trending rarely picks up very new repos, and it crossed that bar in early October, the same week as HN, Futurism, and Tom's Hardware (inference; GitHub hasn't published the trending criteria).

I found no sign the author bought traffic or paid anyone to promote it. The HN post wasn't submitted by the author. The growth curve lines up with each media mention, which doesn't look like star-botting.

### Why this one

**1. Timing.** GTA VI launches Nov 19 on PS5 and Xbox only, with no PC version. Sony also announced it will stop making physical discs within 2028 years. Together these turned "can PS5 games run on PC" from a niche gamer topic into a mainstream one. PS2026 hacking was already hot in 5, and in July SharpEmu, KytyPS5, and RPCSX all appeared within a week. More people now have decrypted dumps.

**2. One line that explains it.** Everyone else is building emulators. "No emulation, runs natively" was in every outlet's headline, so readers understood why it was impressive without knowing anything about compilers.

**3. A number that changes every day.** The README pins progress badges at the top: what percent of system library functions are done, what percent of shader instructions are done, plus a history page that logs the daily change. The number itself became the news. Reddit post titles were built around it: "System libraries at 87%, up 8% from yesterday" (r/pcmasterrace), "Shaders 97%, yesterday it was 80%" (r/IndianGaming), "96%, yesterday 80%" (r/interestingasfuck). Later the project expanded its total of known functions and the percentage fell from the nineties to 27%, which got another round of coverage: "System Libraries coverage drops to 27.06%." One README badge reads "implemented in 7 days." Same project, a new headline every day.

**4. Let AI agents do the work.** The re-link path splits the whole engineering job into a checklist: every PS5 system function gets an ID, implementing one function is one PR, and anything not yet implemented just throws an exception. Clear task boundaries and automatic tests make it a good fit to hand off to agents like Claude Code and Codex. CONTRIBUTING requires saying whether AI was used and the author taking responsibility for every line. PR limits scale with reputation (newcomers get 1, after 1 merges they get 20, after 20 merges there's no limit), and the review queue auto-schedules once an hour. The result: 14,368 PRs, 9,526 merged, and about 6,100 of the 31,419 commits carry Claude co-author credit. The top contributor has 0 followers and 6,292 commits, more than the author himself (1,267) (GitHub, 11-06). Shader coverage went from 53% to 100% in 10 days, up from 9-29 to 10-08. Progress is genuinely climbing, which is what makes that percentage newsworthy.

ymatrix1/PortPS5 started the same idea two months later (9-27), with nearly identical README wording, and has only 428 stars. The idea alone isn't enough. Shipping first, a memorable name, a progress bar, and this contribution workflow all have to be there.

### Who's next to it, who's following

| Project | Stars (11-06) | Compared with alternatives |
|---|---|---|
| shadPS4 | 34,064 | Mature PS4 emulator |
| KytyPS5 | 10,672, +560 in a week | PS5 emulator, emulation route |
| SharpEmu | 6,533 | PS5 emulator written in C# |
| ymatrix1/PortPS5 | 428 | Later entrant with the same idea |

The more interesting part is the wave after it. From early October, "run from your own game dumps, natively on another platform" suddenly became a category, and the followers did get stars:

| Project | Repo created | Stars (11-06) | What the others do |
|---|---|---|---|
| seedds/nxnative | 10-13 | 12,436 | Switch games running natively on iPhone, iPad, and Mac |
| jhaizhou-ops/d2r-mobile | 10-12 | 5,149 | Switch's Diablo 2 Remake running on phones and Mac, README in English and Chinese |
| LoreanXavier/pt-pc | 10-07 | 2,411 | Native PC port of PS4's P.T. |
| peiikai/LASRecomp | 10-08 | 2,149 | Switch's Xenoblade Chronicles static recompilation |
| AjncSystem/ShadowOfTheColossus-PC | 10-12 | 1,736 | Native port of PS4's Shadow of the Colossus |
| HayatoG/iss_pc | 10-13 | 1,095 | Native port of PS4's inFAMOUS Second Son |
| drakolordx7/switch2-recomp | 11-02 | 430 | Switch 2 games running natively on PC, 430 stars in 4 days |

(GitHub, 11-06. I didn't verify each one was inspired by AnyPS5, but their timing follows right after its breakout.)

Most of these projects gained only half to seven-tenths as many stars this week as last week. nxnative dropped to a third. The category is cooling, but switch2-recomp, created Nov 2, still picked up 430 stars in four days, so the door isn't closed yet.

### If it were you

**B: The path is clear and others have already followed it, but the bar is high, there's legal risk, and the window is closing.** No need to rebuild AnyPS5. What's worth copying is its playbook: pick something people want that the platform holder won't provide (console exclusives, discontinued games, big titles that never got a PC version), explain it in one line with "runs natively," turn progress into a public number that changes daily, and split the engineering into small tasks an AI agent can take on.

**Good fit** : developers who know reverse engineering, ABIs, and graphics APIs and want a project with thousands of stars for their resume and to build a following. Also people who can live with the project being taken down by a DMCA notice someday.

**Bad fit** : anyone without reverse-engineering skills who expects AI to build a relinker from scratch (AI can fill in functions, but you have to build the framework). Also anyone worried about legal risk or who wants to open-source under a real name and company identity, and anyone wanting to make yet another PS5 port (AnyPS5 and KytyPS5 already took that spot).

**How to do it** : three ways to follow, best to worst:

1. **Switch platforms** : pick a CPU architecture and target device combo where nobody has built a large project yet. Switch 2 → PC just started (switch2-recomp got 430 stars in four days). Switch → phones already has nxnative. The closer the approach is to direct relinking, the easier it is to build a convincing demo.

2. **Do a single game** : pick a beloved game that never got a PC release and do a "native port," like P.T., Shadow of the Colossus, or inFAMOUS. One game can get a thousand or two stars, and the workload is far smaller than a general-purpose tool. Pick based on two things: strong community demand, and players who already have dumps.

3. **Bring its contribution workflow to another large project** : any project that can be split into "one function / one format / one interface = one PR" (decompiling old games, open-source implementations of a closed format, compatibility layers for an SDK) can copy its progress badges, AI attribution rules, reputation-based PR limits, and automated review queue. This one doesn't touch game copyright, so it carries the lowest risk.

Whichever path you choose, copy the packaging: make the name describe the use, use a "no emulation" style one-liner, pin a daily-changing percentage and a history page at the top of the README, offer a one-click web trial, and write the README in multiple languages.

**How to get users** : first build a demo you can screenshot and record (even if it crashes at frame 168), then post it to r/emulation, r/pcmasterrace, and the relevant console subreddits. Tech outlets (VideoCardz, Tom's Hardware, NotebookCheck) will cover GitHub projects like this on their own, so you don't need to pitch them. Every time the percentage jumps noticeably, that's another reason to post. Save the big exposure for after the repo is two months old, so you can ride trending when it lands.

**Timing** : GTA VI launches 11-19. The weeks around release are the next peak for "console games on PC." The native-port category has already begun cooling, so it's best to have a working demo ready before the end of 2026.

**Signs you're misreading it** : ① Sony or Nintendo sends DMCA notices to projects like AnyPS5 or nxnative, and the whole category drops off a cliff. Stop then. ② Your demo hits Reddit and one or two tech outlets, but after two weeks it still has under 500 stars, meaning the public is already numb to "yet another native port." ③ Conversely, if people really get games running on PC after GTA VI launches, the category will heat up again, and you should move faster.

## boykopovar/AnyPS5: why it actually runs

> Data as of 2026-11-06. Stars and trending come from our GitHub database (repo_profile / repo_day / trending); commits, PRs, and release downloads come from the GitHub API (2026-11-06 live lookup); media and community sources are linked in the text.

### One line

A Belarusian reverse-engineering developer (boykopovar, BSUIR student background, previously wrote private API clients for Grok / DeepSeek) built a tool that **relinks** PS5 game executables into native Windows / Linux programs. It's not an emulator. It rode the wave of GTA VI (11-19 console-only), Sony ending physical discs (2028), and a 2026-year PS5 hacking surge. It also made progress a **public percentage that moves every day** (% of system library functions, % of shader instructions), and that number became "news" that Reddit and media kept reposting. It split the work into small pieces like "implement one exported function by its NID," which AI coding agents can chew through in one go, pulling in tens of thousands of PRs (about 6,100 commits credited to Claude). Faster progress fed back into the news. The repo turned 60 days old right when trending eligibility kicked in, and in early October HN + Futurism + Tom's Hardware stacked up, adding about 20k stars in a week.

Fork-to-star ratio 9.5%. Our database shows no suspicious flags, and the growth curve lines up with media timing. It doesn't look like star-buying.

### 1. Why it took off

**The demand was always there. Timing lit the fuse.**

- GTA VI 2026-11-19 is only on PS5 / Xbox, with no PC version. Sony announced it will 2028 stop physical discs, and PS5 digital sales are 85%. These two things made "can PS5 games run on PC?" a mainstream topic ([shattered.io 2026-09-28](https://shattered.io/anyps5-skips-emulation-crashes-frame-168-2026/), [Futurism 10-08](https://futurism.com/future-society/anyps5-playstation5-games-pc)).

- The 2026 PS5 hacking scene was hot: in July, SharpEmu / KytyPS5 / RPCSX all appeared within a week (shattered.io). Our database shows a batch of new PS5 hacking / homebrew repos created from 9~October (ntfargo/Relapse-Exploit 9-17, PS5Dev/Byepervisor-Reborn 10-12, ZigZagBoi1/PS5-14.10-Research 10-16, and more). More people can get decrypted ELFs. AnyPS5 requires the user's own decrypted dump, and that supply side widened over the same period (inferred, firmware not checked case by case).

**The technical story spreads easily.** The PS5 is AMD Zen 2 x86-64, with the same CPU instructions as a PC. So "no emulation, just relink + swap system libraries + translate shaders to SPIR-V" can be explained in one sentence, and Tom's Hardware directly compared it to "Proton for consoles." "Not an emulator, native performance" is the hook in every headline.

**The public progress bar is the distribution engine.** The README top has progress.svg / a history page, updated daily with "system libraries x% / shader instructions y%." Many Reddit titles are just that number: "system libraries are now at 87 percent, 8 percent progress since yesterday" (r/pcmasterrace), "97% shader completion, it was just 80% yesterday" (r/IndianGaming, r/IndianPCGamers), "PS5 System now running locally on pc update: 96% progress from 80% yesterday" (r/interestingasfuck). HN titles also carry "87% system libraries mapped." Even the drop caused by a growing denominator (down to 26~29% from 10-30) became a post: "System Libraries coverage drops to 27.06% as thousands more…" The project also put an "implemented in 7 days" badge in the README. A number that changes every day lets one project keep making news.

**AI agents plus open crowdsourcing make progress real.** The work is cut into small tasks with clear boundaries, like "write an export for this NID, or throw if you can't," with tests and automatic spec checks. CONTRIBUTING requires disclosing AI assistance, and the author takes responsibility for every line. The PR cap is loosened by number of merges (0→1, ≥1→20, ≥20→unlimited), and the review queue is automated every hour. The result: 14,368 PRs, about 6,147 commits with `Co-Authored-By: Claude` (GitHub commit search, about 20% of all 31,419). The top contributor, oneandonlydean (0 followers), made 6,292 commits alone, more than the author himself (1,267). Shader instructions went from 9-29 to 10-08 53%→100%, and library functions from 9-25 617 to 11-06 11,137 (project history page). Contributing is also a way to stay: every participant is a promoter.

**Timing coincidence with the trending threshold.** Our database shows trending only admits repos about 60 days old. AnyPS5 was created 8-03, and around 10-02 it turned 60 days old. By 10-09 it was already all-repos daily #2 / weekly #1,10-12, and it stayed near the top of weekly until 10-21. By late September it already had 1,922 stars and media coverage, but the real jump to 20k stars came after it became eligible for trending, in the same week as HN (10-06), Futurism (10-08), and Tom's 100% shader story (10-10).

**Why users stuck around:** it wasn't because it works well. The only officially verified playable game is the small indie Dreaming Sarah (shattered.io, mid-October). Community reports put Silksong at about 60 FPS, and you have to build the main branch yourself. Most stars are "betting on it / watching / taking a side against Sony." Reddit has threads like "Why is Sony not legally fighting AnyPS5" and "Is AnyPS5 actually a big deal, or are people massively…" About 198k release downloads show people really are trying it, but very few can actually run games. The project also has an in-browser converter (boykopovar.github.io/AnyPS5, files never leave your machine), which lowers the bar to "drag a ZIP into a web page."

### 2. Differentiation

Everyone else doing the same thing (playing PS5 games on PC) takes the **emulation** route: KytyPS5, SharpEmu, and RPCSX rebuild the PS5 environment and interpret system calls at runtime; shadPS4 is mainly PS4. AnyPS5 differs by **not emulating: it relinks the executable directly into native PE/ELF** , replaces system libraries as dynamic libraries, and translates shaders offline to SPIR-V. That difference is one reason it works:

- On the narrative side, "No emulation" is the hook of every media headline. It also makes the project look cleaner in legal discussions (no Sony code included, GPL-2.0).

- On the engineering side, relinking splits the problem into "implement system library functions one at a time," which is naturally measurable (%), parallel, and suited to AI agents and crowdsourcing. That's why there's a progress bar that moves every day. An emulator's progress is hard to express as a single percentage.

But the idea alone isn't enough. ymatrix1/PortPS5, with the same approach (created 2026-09-27, nearly identical description: "binary relinking, replacement system libraries, and Vulkan. No CPU emulation"), has only 428 stars. AnyPS5 won through first-mover advantage, the name (AnyPS5 is plain and easy to search), the progress bar, and the crowdsourcing machine.

### Visibility and copycats

- **Visibility: widely discussed.** Mainstream tech coverage from Tom's Hardware, Futurism, TechPowerUp and others; HN front-page-level discussion; several large Reddit subs; lots of YouTube videos; GitHub weekly #1. No revenue (open source, GPL-2.0, no money involved).

- **Copycats:** Direct copies of the same idea: ymatrix1/PortPS5 (428 stars). The bigger wave is "native port / recomp" across the whole category, which exploded in early October. Most of these pitch themselves as "comes with a game dump" and sell the same native angle: seedds/nxnative (Switch→iPhone/Mac, 10-13,12,436 stars), jhaizhou-ops/d2r-mobile (10-12,5,149 stars), LoreanXavier/pt-pc (PS4 P.T. native PC, 10-07,2,411 stars), peiikai/LASRecomp, AjncSystem/ShadowOfTheColossus-PC, HayatoG/iss_pc / tlg_pc, OverkillLabs3/driveclub-recomp, drakolordx7/switch2-recomp, and more. I haven't verified one by one whether each was directly inspired by AnyPS5, but the timing lines up. The author is also building an ecosystem of libraries: AnyDevKit(10-25), llvm-cxx-ps, ps5-nid-map, OpenFmod.

### What to borrow

1. **Turn progress into a public number that changes every day** (badge + history page) so fans spread the news for you; a "drop" caused by a widened denominator is another news hook you can post again.

2. **Split a huge project into units AI agents can finish on their own** (one exported function = one PR), then add automated style checks, raise PR limits by reputation, and run an automatic review queue, and you can absorb tens of thousands of agent-generated PRs. That's a new growth lever for open-source projects in the 2026-year era.

3. **Anti-establishment narrative + a big news hook** (GTA VI not coming to PC, Sony ending physical discs) lets a technical project break out into mainstream gaming media.

4. **The name says what it does** (AnyPS5), and the technical difference fits in one line ("not an emulator").

5. After building the library, write the core quietly first and go public only once there's something demoable; watch the trending 60-day threshold, and time the breakout to land after you qualify for trending.

### Uncertain

- Whether the first public post around 9-24 was written by the author, and who posted the Dead Cells demo, are unverified (Reddit page fetches were limited).

- Claude-credited commits are only a floor: AI-generated code without attribution can't be counted; Codex keyword hits came up 873 times but the meaning wasn't confirmed.

- Whether the top contributor oneandonlydean (0 followers, 6,292 commits) is a batch of AI agent accounts is unverified.

- Number of actually playable games: officially only Dreaming Sarah is confirmed; the community claims 5+, unverified.

- As of mid-October Sony hasn't commented; if it files a DMCA, the project could be taken down and the buzz could fall off a cliff.

- Daily star counts are missing for 9-28 through 10-09, and it can't be split how much of the 10-02 trending placement and the 10-06 HN post each contributed.
