# Official open source went live 53 minutes later: how dsh-TUI took the terminal interface DeepSeek Harness was missing

**What it is** A terminal interface plugin for DeepSeek's official agent runtime, DeepSeek Harness. It works like Claude Code, installs with one npm command, and is free and open source.

**Why it took off** The official team deliberately shipped only a web interface, but the core remote-development users needed a terminal on day one. The author was a beta tester, so he could install it the day the repo opened. It was featured in an official release graphic, and in late September the DSH lead named it as a recommendation. It became the default pick on every must-install list.

**C** **How you can follow the play** Don't build yet another DSH terminal interface. Copy the playbook instead: watch for the next big open-source platform built on plugins, get beta access early, and on launch day ship the interface or integration layer the official team left out. Make it a pure plugin, stay close to the official brand so it can make it into official materials, then keep up with each version to hold the position.

Grade C: the position is already held by a project the official team has endorsed twice. Dozens of similar projects started the same day and the best of them has ~300 stars, so following now won't earn stars. The window was only the day the platform opened, and beta access was required. What's worth learning is how to fill the gap on a new platform's launch day. What people in the niche are saying

Data (updated daily) · Repo created 2026-08-13 · 7,156 stars · 7 days +727

DeepSeek's official open-source agent runtime DeepSeek Harness (DSH), released in Aug 13, only shipped a browser interface, with no terminal interface. A beta user had already built a Claude Code-style terminal plugin, and it went live 53 minutes after the official repo was created. It was even featured in the official WeChat release graphic. The same day, dozens of others built the same thing. 85 days later it had 7k stars, and the runner-up had fewer than 300. Below: what it is, where the stars came from, who competed for the spot, and how to copy this move on the next new platform.

### The person waiting at launch got a web UI

On the evening of Aug 132026, developer Q.Ben Zheng opened a terminal tab specifically to wait for DSH to open-source. He opened the official repo and posted on X: "I even opened a new tab for herdr to watch, and it turns out it's a web UI?"

An hour or so later (Beijing time 22:09) he posted again: "Turns out DeepSeek Harness's TUI runs as a plugin + profile. Good thing I found the project from the WeChat release graphic and got it running." He pasted three install commands for `dsh-cc-tui`. That was dsh-TUI's name before the rename, with cc standing for Claude Code.

The timeline: the official repo was created at 11:56 UTC, and dsh-TUI was created on GitHub at 12:49 UTC. The same day, someone posted in discussion #45 on the official repo: "Please add a TUI. Most devs work remotely. Linux is the main battlefield for AI... native command line support would be best." A reply pointed them straight to this package.

One more detail: according to a DeepInfra review, the official repo originally had a TUI package that was pulled a week before release. The docs kept only the line "`dsh --profile tui`, an out-of-repo plugin installed via dsh plugin". So the gap was deliberately left for the community to fill.

### What it is

A DSH plugin written in TypeScript with Ink (React for terminal UIs). `npm i -g @deepseek-ai/dsh @deepseek-harness-tui/dsh-tui` installs it and it works immediately. It doesn't modify DSH's core, and uninstalling leaves nothing behind.

The features roughly match Claude Code's terminal experience: streaming thinking output, double-Esc rewind, a context progress bar, a tokens-per-second meter, mouse support, image, Mermaid, and LaTeX rendering, session management, and task-completion notifications. A pixel whale sits at the top in DeepSeek's brand blue. Later it added login with ChatGPT / Claude / Grok subscriptions, optional Claude and Codex backends, Agent Teams, and a one-click Windows installer. MIT licensed and free.

### Metric

| Timeline | star | Sources |
|---|---|---|
| Mid-to-late August | About 1.9k–2k | Readings from recommendation posts on Cnblogs and CSDN and from awesome lists |
| 10-09 | 4,196 | GitHub daily snapshot |
| 10-24 | 5,480 (+263 in a single day, the highest day) | GitHub daily snapshot |
| 11-06 | 6,990,fork 345 | GitHub daily snapshot |

Still gaining about 100 a day over the last two weeks: +7 in the last 800 days, +7 in the 973 days before that, slightly slower now. Three months in it reached v0.18.0 and has 773 issues in total.

More telling than stars is npm downloads: 47k in August, 42k in September, 57k in October, and 5k in the first 15.5 days of November, about 3k a day (from the npm downloads API). Each upgrade also counts as a download, so this isn't a user count. But October being higher than September suggests people kept using it and didn't just star it and leave.

### Where the stars came from

**Official release materials.** On the day it opened, the DSH official WeChat release graphic featured it as a "beta user pick" plugin in the center spot. The developer above found it from that graphic. The original post and its read count were not obtained. Only the author's screenshots and users' retellings are available.

**Named by the platform lead.** In late September, DSH team lead Cui Tianyi posted on X: "[DSH community plugin recommendation] I recommend dsh-TUI, which has been developed continuously since DeepSeek Harness's beta... it fills the TUI interface DSH was missing." Those who passed it along called it "Cui personally endorsing it", and Zhidongxi's 10-30 coverage also mentioned it. The author then changed the repo description to "The TUI plugin the official DSH team recommends first".

**Answers in the official repo.** Under "we need a TUI" threads such as #45 and #842, community replies simply paste its package name. The official README asks plugin authors to tag their repos `dsh-plugin`, and searching that tag for TUI and sorting by stars puts it first.

**The must-install list.** Long posts titled "16 hot DSH plugins" on Zhihu, Cnblogs, CSDN, Tencent Cloud Developer, composio, Sohu, and X almost all include it. Later articles copied the earlier ones, so the default pick kept spreading that way.

**The author's own video.** A Bilibili promo video, "DeepSeek Harness official plugin?! dsh-tui", with 28k views and 514 likes, credited to "研发" (R&D). The description says "Give it a Star", and there are more videos after it.

**A chain of companion repos.** Over two-plus months the author built 20 DSH companion repos. dsh-Go (mobile) has 12.6k stars, more than dsh-TUI itself. There's also dsh-context, dsh-auth, a VS Code extension, and a "plugin admission spec". 10-30 When dsh-Go launched, the coverage opened with "dsh-TUI author". 10-24 The peak that day sits close to when dsh-Go's repo was created (10-25). Whether the two are related is unverified.

No paid promotion found. The English community barely pushed it: the threads discussing DSH's terminal UI mostly mention other projects.

### Who's competing for this spot

On the day it open-sourced, dozens of GitHub repos named deepseek-harness-tui and similar appeared. Most launched at the same time, so they're not copies:

| Project | star | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| huiliyi37/dsh-tianshu-tui | 298 (last 7 days, +3) | Launched the same day. Hand-written ANSI rendering with 16+ themes. No official endorsement, slow updates. |
| hust-open-atom-club/oh-dsh | 324 | A separate DSH distribution (desktop / web / terminal), not a plugin. |
| Hilbert-beinghappy/seektty | 192 | Also Claude Code-style, one day later. No official exposure. |
| cocode-agency/cocode | 167 | Distribution approach: GUI and terminal bundled together. |
| Same-named repos from tomowang, boxeryao, gxinxing and others. | 0–50 | Nearly identical name, fewer features. |

Functionally these projects are pretty similar, all Claude Code-style terminals. What separates them by 20x is official exposure and how fast they ship updates.

Projects that also filled the official UI gap and built desktop and web clients are bigger still: anywhere-labs/dsh-desktop at 35k stars, dataelement/dsh-desktop at 17k, dsh-web at 10k. In the DSH ecosystem, filling UI gaps is the lane with the most traffic.

Outside the ecosystem are terminal agents with their own engines, like Claude Code, Codex CLI and opencode. dsh-TUI doesn't compete on engine; it sells the DSH engine with the feel of Claude Code.

The biggest variable is the official team itself. As of Oct 25, people were still posting in the official forum asking for an "official CLI/TUI," and as of early November it hadn't shipped. If they bring back the TUI package they pulled, the value of this spot could drop fast.

### If it were you

**Grade C: worth learning from, not worth chasing.** The DSH terminal UI slot is already taken, and it's the default option with official endorsement twice. Building another now would likely top out at second place with 300 stars. What's worth studying is the play: on the day a new platform launches, fill the UI gap the official team deliberately left open.

**Who it suits:** developers who can get into a major platform's beta, or who watch closely for new SDK or agent runtime releases; people who can write terminal or desktop UI with decent taste, and who will follow every platform version for three months straight.

**Who it doesn't suit:** anyone planning yet another DSH terminal UI, or trying to build a reputation by writing themes and small add-ons for dsh-TUI (the dsh-tui-theme, dsh-tui-find series never took off). People with no beta access who only start after launch are already behind on day one in this kind of lane.

**How to do it:** ① Find the next "everything is a plugin" platform project and look at what core user need it leaves unfilled at launch. It's usually the UI (terminal, desktop, mobile) or the integration layer. Packages pulled from the official repo, or features mentioned in a single doc line, are clues. ② Get into the beta so you can ship on launch day: a single npm command, pure plugin, no changes to core, and sided with the official line so the official team is willing to promote it. ③ Match the platform brand visually (mascot, brand color) so the official team can drop it straight into posters and posts. ④ After the first exposure, release often, keep pace with every candidate version, and then ship companion repos under the same author identity to turn one endorsement into your own reputation.

**How to get users:** Wave one comes from official materials and the discussion board: post the install command under the official "please add X" threads, and apply the labels the official repo asks for. Wave two is Chinese-language plugin roundups and Bilibili demo videos, and actively hand the project to the people writing those roundups. For the English community, write a separate English explainer and launch on Reddit and Hacker News. This DSH wave had almost no serious English-side push.

**When the window is:** The window is measured in hours: the day the platform open-sources. The DSH window has already passed. Watch for the next big company to open-source an agent runtime or plugin platform.

**Signs the read was wrong:** ① After DSH shipped its own terminal UI, dsh-TUI's daily npm downloads stayed steady at 2–3k. That would mean its feel and features, not official endorsement, are what kept users. ② A DSH UI project with no official exposure that launched a few weeks later still reached thousands of stars. That would mean the ecosystem still has room and day one isn't the only window. ③ Conversely, if the next major platform launches, and none of the same-day fillers got official exposure but still took off, then getting into official materials isn't required, and this play is easier to copy.

### One line

DeepSeek officially open-sourced the DeepSeek Harness (DSH, 274k stars) agent runtime on 2026-08-13, but **it shipped only a Web UI, with no terminal interface** . dsh-TUI's author was a DSH beta user who built a Claude Code-style terminal UI plugin during the beta. It went live on the day the official project opened (the repo was created 53 minutes after the official one) and appeared in **the images of the official DSH WeChat launch post** . In late September, DSH lead Cui Tianyi also recommended it on X. At its core, it took the "part the official team deliberately left out", and got official endorsement first, then organic traffic.

### 1. What it is

- A TUI plugin for DSH (TypeScript + Ink/React). `npm i -g @deepseek-ai/dsh @deepseek-harness-tui/dsh-tui` and it runs, with no changes to DSH core. Selling points include a pixel-whale top bar, streaming thinking, double-Esc rollback, a context progress bar, a TPS meter, mouse interaction, image/Mermaid/LaTeX rendering, session management and task-completion notifications. Later it added OAuth login with ChatGPT/Claude/Grok subscriptions, Claude/Codex multi-engine support, Agent Teams and a one-click Windows installer (README; [github.com/ccch1mneyyy/dsh-TUI](https://github.com/ccch1mneyyy/dsh-TUI); website [dshtui.com/](https://dshtui.com/)).

- MIT-licensed and free. There is no visible paywall, so there is no revenue to report.

- Originally named `dsh-cc-tui` (cc = Claude Code), later renamed dsh-TUI. The link in @zhengqbbb's 2026-08-13 post still uses the old name ([x.com/zhengqbbb/status/2087904459246747902](https://x.com/zhengqbbb/status/2087904459246747902)).

### 2. Data

| Metric | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Repo created | 2026-08-13 12:49 UTC (the deepseek-harness official repo was created 11:56 UTC, a 53-minute gap) | GitHub API |
| star | 6,990 (data card, 11-06); GitHub API at the time: 7,068 | GitHub repo / API |
| Early star readings | Cnblogs and CSDN recommendation posts say ⭐1,941; the awesome list says ⭐2k; the deepseek404 listing says 4.1k | [www.cnblogs.com/xiezhr/p/22560344](https://www.cnblogs.com/xiezhr/p/22560344), [github.com/jiji262/awesome-deepseek-harness](https://github.com/jiji262/awesome-deepseek-harness), [dsh.deepseek404.com/detail.php?id=ccch1mneyyy%2Fdsh-TUI](https://dsh.deepseek404.com/detail.php?id=ccch1mneyyy%2Fdsh-TUI) |
| 10-09 first observed | 4,196 stars | GitHub repo stars_first |
| last 7 days / previous 7 days | +800 / +973; single-day peak +263 (10-24) | Data card |
| fork | 345 (about 4.9%) | Data card |
| issue | 773 releases in total (100 still open); shipped up to v0.18.0 | GitHub search API |
| npm downloads | August 47k, September 42k, October 57k; early November 5 days 15.5k, averaging about 3,000 a day | api.npmjs.org(`@deepseek-harness-tui/dsh-tui`) |
| JetBrains plugin (third-party author huangjl) | 187 downloads | plugins.jetbrains.com/plugin/33869 |

npm daily downloads have held steady at 2–3.4k. (A package counts a download on every upgrade, so this isn't the same as user count.) They're still coming every day, and October was higher than September, which means real people are using it, not just starring it. The suspect field is empty and the fork ratio looks normal, with no sign of star inflation.

### 3. Competitors

**Same ecosystem (DSH terminal UI)** : on the day the official project opened, dozens of same-category "deepseek-harness-tui" repos appeared, and almost none of them took off.

| Name | Developer | Launched | Scale | How it differs from dsh-TUI |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| huiliyi37/dsh-tianshu-tui | Open source | 2026-08-13 | 298 stars, +7 in 3 days | Also launched the same day, self-built ANSI renderer, 16+ themes, but no official endorsement and slower feature iteration |
| Hilbert-beinghappy/seektty | Open source | 2026-08-14 | 192 stars | Also Claude Code-style, one day later, no official exposure. |
| hust-open-atom-club/oh-dsh | Open source | 2026-08-11 | 324 stars | A separate DSH runtime distribution (Desktop/Web/TUI), not a plugin |
| cocode-agency/cocode | Open source | 2026-08-14 | 167 stars | The "distribution" play: GUI and TUI bundled together |
| openma-ai/Martty | Open source | 2026-08-13 | 81 stars | An ACP client, a general-purpose harness TUI |
| dsh-tui/dsh-tui, tomowang/dsh-tui, boxeryao/dsh-mini-tui, gxinxing/deepseek-harness-tui, and others | Open source | 2026-08-13~16 | each at 0–50 stars | Nearly identical name, fewer features. |
| DSH's official Web UI (`dsh web`) | Big-company features | 2026-08-13 | Official repo 274k stars | The official team only built a browser UI, no CLI/TUI (a Zhihu post: "The official team hasn't released any CLI or TUI form, so TUI can only be extended via plugins", [zhuanlan.zhihu.com/p/2072698072879125245](https://zhuanlan.zhihu.com/p/2072698072879125245)) |
| anywhere-labs/dsh-desktop, dataelement/dsh-desktop, zhu1090093659/dsh-web | Open source | 2026-08-12~13 | 35k / 17k / 10k stars | Same "fill in the official UI" idea, but for desktop or web skins. These are bigger than the TUI, showing that UI-filling is the highest-traffic lane in the DSH ecosystem |

**Outside the ecosystem** : Claude Code, OpenAI Codex CLI, opencode, pi, esengine/DeepSeek-Reasonix (36k stars, a DeepSeek-specific coding agent). These are full terminal agents with their own engines. dsh-TUI doesn't compete on the engine; it sells "DSH's engine with Claude Code's feel," and later also let Claude/Codex plug in as optional engines.

**Bottom line** : Dozens of projects shipped the same idea on the same day. dsh-TUI hit 7k stars while the runner-up sits around 300 stars, a 20x gap. The difference isn't the idea. It's distribution and how fast they iterate.

### 4. Growth tactics (with evidence)

1. **Featured in the official account post the day it launched (confirmed)** : dsh-TUI appeared as an "invite-beta user pick plugin" in a poster from DSH's official WeChat post, with the pixel whale front and center (the official site and README also use the screenshot). On launch day a user posted on X: "Glad I found this project through the official post's image and got it running" and shared the `dsh-cc-tui` install command (@zhengqbbb, 3,856 views, [x.com/zhengqbbb/status/2087904459246747902](https://x.com/zhengqbbb/status/2087904459246747902)). That day, people who wanted a terminal opened the official repo, found only a Web UI (same user's earlier post: "I just opened a new herdr tab to keep watch, and it turns out it's a Web UI?"), and followed the official image to find it.

2. **Named by the official lead (confirmed)** : Cui Tianyi (X @tianyi), lead of the DeepSeek Harness team, posted about 2026-09-26 on: "[DSH community plugin recommendation] I recommend dsh-TUI, which has been developed continuously since DSH's invite beta... it fills the TUI interface DSH was missing," which was reposted as "Cui's personal endorsement" (https://x.com/NFT_Chen/status/2103824847512150298). Zhidongxi's 10-30 report also mentions it was "named and recommended by DeepSeek Harness team lead Cui Tianyi" (https://www.163.com/dy/article/LAH5R82N051180F7.html). The README and description present this as "DSH's officially top-recommended."

3. **Organic traffic from the official repo discussions (confirmed)** : in the official repo's discussion #45 "Please make a TUI" (👍32) and #842 "TUI support," community replies point straight to `@deepseek-harness-tui/dsh-tui` (https://github.com/deepseek-ai/deepseek-harness/discussions/45). The official README also asks plugin authors to tag repos with the `dsh-plugin` topic; searching that topic for TUIs by stars, it ranks second, behind only one unrelated library.

4. **Chinese content and "must-install plugin" roundups (confirmed)** : Zhihu, cnblogs, CSDN, Tencent Cloud developer community, composio, the X long post "16 hot DSH plugins" (@yupi996), and Sohu's "plugins blew up on GitHub." Nearly every must-install list includes it (see links above). Zhidongxi reported on the DSH ecosystem twice and mentioned the author both times.

5. **The author made a Bilibili promo video (confirmed)** : "DeepSeek Harness official plugin?! dsh-tui" promo video, 28k plays, 514 likes. Author ccchimneyyy credited as "R&D," with a description reading "give it a Star" (https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1p8gg6fEhq/). There are also update videos like "dsh-tui major update!"

6. **Plugin directories and store listings (confirmed)** : dshfind, deepseekplugins.com, dsh.deepseek404.com, awesome-dsh-plugin (23k stars), and others. The README shows a trendshift daily TypeScript #7 badge.

7. **The author cross-links a set of repos (confirmed)** : over two-plus months, author ccch1mneyyy built 20+ DSH satellite repos (dsh-Go 12.6k stars, dsh-context, dsh-auth, dsh-tui-vscode, dsh-ecosystem-spec "plugin admission spec", and more), each riding dsh-TUI's reputation. 10-30 On dsh-Go's launch day, Zhidongxi's report opened with "dsh-TUI author." 10-24 The single-day peak of +263 and the dsh-Go repo creation (10-25) fall close together; whether they're related is unverified.

8. No paid promotion found. The X corpus (x-radar) has no posts directly mentioning dsh-TUI; spread on X came mainly from people relaying Cui Tianyi's post and Chinese KOLs.

### 5. Why it took off

- **The platform left a deliberate gap** : DSH says "everything is a plugin," but the official side only shipped a Web UI. Its rivals are Claude Code and Codex, and its most core users (remote SSH, Linux dev) first asked for a terminal UI (original #45 post: "Most dev work is remote. Linux is the main battlefield for AI... please make a TUI"). The official team explicitly handed this gap to the community.

- **Beta access got it there first** : the author started during the invite beta (Cui Tianyi's words), and the repo was set up 53 minutes after the official open-source release, usable the same day. Dozens of other same-named repos only started coding on release day.

- **Officially endorsed twice** : first via the launch post image, then via the lead's named recommendation. In a platform ecosystem, that is effectively the "default option" slot. Later roundups and Q&A replies copied that default.

- **Fast iteration and wide scope held the spot** : reached v0.18 in three months, 773 total issues, and adapted to every DSH rc release. Later it added multi-engine support, subscription login, a Windows installer, and VS Code/JetBrains/Neovim companions, and the runner-up (about 300 stars) never caught up.

- **Aesthetics and recognizability** : the pixel whale plus DeepSeek brand blue matches the official mascot, which made it a natural fit for official posters. The vibe also suits the Chinese community's "anime invite-beta group" culture (see @criscxuan's long post describing the beta plugin "whale girl," [x.com/criscxuan/article/2088915875604930630](https://x.com/criscxuan/article/2088915875604930630)).

### 6. Differentiation

Functionally, compared with dozens of similar projects, the gap is small: all are Ink/OpenTUI Claude Code-style terminals, and it comes down to polish. What really differs is three things: (1) **official endorsement** (WeChat post feature plus lead's recommendation), which none of the others have; (2) **it's a plugin, not a fork** , using only DSH's public exports, installs and uninstalls without touching the core, consistent with the official "everything is a plugin" narrative, so the official side was willing to promote it; (3) **tightest version tracking and the most complete features** . The first point is what got it to the top; the second and third are why it stayed there. The pixel-whale skin let it "fit into the official poster," one of the prerequisites for the endorsement.

### 7. Visibility and copycats

- Visibility: **already widely known in the Chinese DSH developer community** . The official lead recommended it; Zhidongxi, Sohu, Zhihu, CSDN, and composio have all written about it, and every must-install list includes it. No revenue to speak of (MIT, free). Limited English-speaking exposure; the x-radar corpus has no posts directly mentioning it.

- Copycats: dsh-tianshu-tui, seektty, dsh-tui/dsh-tui, tomowang/dsh-tui, dsh-mini-tui, and dozens more of the same type that appeared the same day (more a simultaneous launch than copying). Those directly borrowing its name for companions include baobaolaodie/dsh-tui-vscode, AlbinZhu/dsh.nvim, a JetBrains "DeepSeek Harness (dsh-tui)" plugin, plus "dsh-TUI plugins" like dsh-tui-theme, dsh-tui-find, and dsh-music-tui. It has grown into a mini platform of its own.

### 8. What others can borrow

- When a new platform or SDK launches, look for the UI or integration layer the official team deliberately skipped but core users need on day one. If you can get beta access, ship on launch day and aim for the official launch materials.

- Build it as a "pure plugin that doesn't touch the core," aligned with the platform's narrative, so the platform is willing to promote it.

- Match the platform's brand visually (the whale, brand blue) so the official side can use it directly in posters and posts.

- After the first endorsement, keep iterating at high frequency to hold the default spot, and use the same author identity to launch companion projects in succession (dsh-Go passed 1,000 stars within 3 hours of launch), turning one endorsement into an author brand.

- Risk: its fate is fully tied to DSH. If the official team ships a native CLI/TUI, this position could disappear quickly.

### 9. Uncertain

- The original official WeChat post text, publish date, and read counts weren't obtained (only the author's screenshots and user relays). Engagement data for Cui Tianyi's original post wasn't obtained.

- The day-by-day star curve from 8 to October wasn't obtained (GitHub's stargazers endpoint returned 404, then hit rate limits). Only scattered readings: about 1.9k → 2k → 4.1k → 10-09 4,196 → 11-06 ~7k.

- How much of the npm downloads are upgrades and CI is unclear; the real active user count is unknown.

- What drove the single-day peak of +263 on 10-24 wasn't verified.

- Unclear whether DSH will ship a native TUI in the future.
