# "Tomato ad-free bundle" hit 1,200 stars in two months: the stars came from Bilibili UP-host shoutouts, and none went to the copycats

**What it is** A third-party ad-free Android client for ByteDance's Tomato family of content (novels, Hongguo short dramas, audiobooks, comic dramas, comics). No login, open source, no server.

**Why it took off** Fanqie and Hongguo ads were too heavy, and people wanted a clean version. It first got seeded and word-of-mouth on LINUX DO, then 10-14 a 100k-view video from a Bilibili software recommendation account blew it up, adding +216 stars in a single day. After that, reposts on download sites and a new version every few days kept it at 20–40 stars a day.

**C** **How to play it:** Don't clone it and don't port it. Use its cold-start path (self-promotion on LINUX DO, pitching software recommendation accounts on Bilibili, long-tail download sites, frequent updates) on an open-source tool that doesn't touch anyone else's content and works out of the box.

Grade C: There are already dozens of Tomato / Hongguo client apps from this wave, the earliest and most polished ones took the stars, and repos that copy or port them get 0 to a few dozen stars in testing. The stars come from free users and don't buy you any reputation with peers, and there are legal-letter and repo-takedown risks. What's worth learning is the cold-start playbook, not the project itself. Circulating in small circles

A developer called ch6vip put Tomato Novel, Hongguo short dramas, Tomato Audiobooks, comic dramas and comics into one Android app with no login, no ads and no server. It's open source and hit 1,199 stars in 66 days. The day it took off lines up exactly with a Bilibili video at 100k views. But it also shows how hard this star-chasing game is: dozens of similar projects came out in the same wave, the clone repos built on it are still at 0 stars, and the whole thing rests on ByteDance's content and APIs.

### An issue: "Someone on Bilibili is promoting your app. I'd suggest laying low for a bit."

On Oct 15, 2026, the GitHub repo ch6vip/fqapp got its 30th issue, with a Bilibili video link. The replies stacked up below: "Better change it quickly or you'll get a lawyer's letter" "Funny, I found it from Bilibili too" "Just use it quietly. Who goes around shouting about it? Look what happened to NASTOOLS and legado."

The video being pointed to was posted Oct 14 by the Bilibili channel "宝藏研究社" (Treasure Research Society). Its title: "Insanely good! Another killer GitHub tool! The open-source modded Tomato..." The cloud-drive link was in the description. By Nov 6 it had 102k views and 3,709 favorites. On Oct 16 the repo gained 216 stars in a single day, the biggest day so far. The same day the author shipped v1.0.121, replacing every original-brand word and icon in the UI. On Oct 24 it was renamed "什锦铺" (Shijin Shop). The old name "番茄小铺" (Tomato Shop) survived only on download sites.

### What it is

An Android client with a Flutter UI and a Rust core. Open it and you can read Tomato Novel (with paragraph comments and reviews), watch Hongguo short dramas and comic dramas, listen to Tomato Audiobooks and read comics. The same work can switch directly between novel, drama and audiobook. No login, no root, no ads. Request signatures are computed locally on the phone, and the author runs no server. The README says "content comes from third-party public APIs" and "for learning and research only." From November it also added iOS and Windows builds.

Plainly put: an ad-free third-party shell for ByteDance's Tomato-family content, GPL open source.

### How the stars came

| Timeline | What happened | Stars (GitHub daily snapshot) |
|---|---|---|
| 10-08 | The author posted an open-source self-promotion thread on LINUX DO, with 1,440 views and 77 likes as of 11-06. Replies mostly said "the UI looks great," "it can basically replace Tomato Novel and Hongguo," and "please do iOS / HarmonyOS / desktop." | — |
| 10-11 ~ 10-13 | Two small UP creators pushed it first (青临同学 with 7,637 views, 破劫宝库 with 2,278 views). | 10-12:102 |
| 10-14 | 宝藏研究社 video, 102k views | 10-15:223 |
| 10-16 | +216 in one day; de-branded version released | 439 |
| Late October | About a dozen more software-recommendation channels followed, including 山海之花 (14k views), and several copied 宝藏研究社's titles. Dozens of APK download sites listed it as "番茄小铺" or "什锦铺." | 10-22:744 |
| Around 10-31 | Repo was 60 days old, and charted on GitHub's language daily trending for 5 days | 11-01:999 |
| 11-06 | Daily gains settled at 20–40 | 1,199 |

A few things to look at closely:

- **LINUX DO only gave it seed users, not volume.** The thread ran four days and the repo was at 102 stars. Its job was to collect feedback and build the "great UI" word of mouth, so later UP creators had something to talk about.

- **The real amplifier was Bilibili software-recommendation channels.** These channels pull traffic with topics like "GitHub killer tools" and "free gadgets" plus cloud-drive links, and they go looking for this kind of thing on their own, so the author didn't have to pitch them.

- **The stars came from ordinary users looking for free stuff, not developers.** The 4 surviving release APKs have been downloaded 13,122 times (GitHub, 11-06). Early versions were deleted, so the real number is higher. On X there hasn't been a single post in nearly 60 days, and no HN or media coverage. So these 1,200 stars bought no developer-circle reputation: almost nobody among peers knows who ch6vip is.

### Why it got stars among so many peers

**The demand is real.** Tomato Novel and Hongguo are so ad-heavy that GitHub has dedicated LSPosed ad-block modules, Hongguo rules for GKD, and home DNS ad-block lists.

**But it isn't a lone case; it's a wave.** From 2026 9 to November, a whole batch of Hongguo / Tomato third-party clients appeared on GitHub: hongguo-desktop-releases (created 9-14, 5.4k stars), hongguo-player (2.7k, +890 in the last 7 days), guoapp Hongguo appraisal (1.7k), hongguo-drama (878), plus a TV version and openhongguo SDK (329 stars in 11 days) (github, 11-06). My guess is someone got ByteDance's device-signing working first, and low-barrier AI coding then produced dozens in a month (unverified). Note that the desktop-only Hongguo repos had more stars than this one, so the core demand is "free Tomato content" itself.

**It occupied the "all-in-one on your phone" slot.** Most of its contemporaries only did Hongguo short dramas and focused on desktop or TV. It put five content types into one phone app, all open source. Those two points are what its Bilibili titles kept hammering.

**It held its stars through update speed.** Roughly 950 commits every 66 days, 791 of them from the author. Versions went from 1.0.88 to 1.0.200. Feature requests from issues, like regex replacement in body text, scrolling across chapters and backup migration, were merged within days, with the author replying personally. The most common way these clients die is that the upstream changes its API and they break. 11-03 other Hongguo third-party clients were already "emergency-repairing playback." High-frequency updates keep users around, and they also keep later UP creators willing to promote it.

### What the copycats got

| Repo | How they copied it | Stars (checked now: 11-06) |
|---|---|---|
| linkuanb/huangfeng-xiaoshuo "黄蜂小说" (Hornet Novel) | Created 10-16, description copied, only the brand color changed | 0 |
| gv2546777222-ops/kaolact | Created 11-05, intro copied word for word | 0 |
| yunleeeee/fqapp-macos | 10-26, macOS port | 0 |
| vdnight89/tomato-supermarket | 10-18, Windows desktop version | 28 |

There are also a HarmonyOS port and a TV-adapted version on Bilibili, and download sites repackaged it under new names. The pattern is clear: **clones don't earn any stars. Stars follow the UP creators' videos, and the videos only promote the first well-polished one.** Platform ports do slightly better, but still only a few dozen stars.

### If it were you

**Verdict** : don't copy it, and don't build a port for it. This wave is already saturated. The stars went to the first movers, the most polished projects, and the ones UP creators picked. Followers measured at roughly 0 to a few dozen stars. And stars like these don't earn peer respect. They bring lawyer's letters and takedown risk instead, and if the project goes, the stars and the résumé line go with it.

**Who it fits** : people who want to learn how a Chinese open-source project cold-starts. Its playbook (LINUX DO self-promotion for seed users and word of mouth, Bilibili software channels for amplification, download-site long tail for pickup, and the author holding ground through frequent updates) works unchanged for a project that doesn't touch anyone else's content.

**Who it doesn't fit** : anyone who wants to clone the Tomato / Hongguo client, or build iOS, HarmonyOS, TV or desktop versions of fqapp. The original author is already adding iOS and Windows, and ports have measured at almost zero stars. Also anyone hoping to build a name in the developer community. These stars came from free-riding users, and peers don't pay attention to them.

**How to do it** : pick a pain point that people use every day but the official experience handles badly, and solve it without relying on anyone else's content or APIs. Examples: local AI tools, system enhancers, ad removal that doesn't touch content rights, productivity tools. Hit three marks: it works on install (no login, no config, no root); the UI is pretty enough that UP creators want to screenshot it; issues get answered the same day and a release ships every few days.

**How to get users** : first post a self-promotion thread in LINUX DO's open-source section and steer replies toward "great UI" and "can replace XX." Then proactively feed material to Bilibili software-recommendation channels, framed as "GitHub killer tool / free gadget." Put clear download links in the README so download and resource sites repost it themselves. After 60 days, wait for GitHub's language daily trending to add another push.

**Timing: the window has already passed.** The Tomato / Hongguo hype window closed. fqapp's biggest single day was on 10-16, and since then it has settled at a steady 20–40. The cold-start path itself does not expire.

**What would show you misjudged it** : over the next two or three months, if someone starts a Tomato / Hongguo client after November and passes 1,000 stars within a month, the wave isn't saturated yet. If ByteDance never acts and these repos never get taken down, the risk was overstated. On the other side, if the clones stop updating in batches or get deleted, the category is closed for good.

## Research report on ch6vip/fqapp (什锦铺, formerly "番茄小铺")

Research date 2026-11-06. Channel: GitHub.

### One line

An Android app (Flutter UI + in-process Rust core) that packs ByteDance's Fanqie family of content — Fanqie Novel, Hongguo short dramas, comic dramas, Fanqie Listen (audiobooks), and comics — into one client with no login, no ads, and no self-hosted server. In essence it's **a third-party, ad-free client for Fanqie / Hongguo** . The README says "content comes from third-party public APIs" and "for learning and research only."

### Where users come from (by time)

1. **10-08 LINUX DO "open-source self-promotion" post** (https://linux.do/t/topic/2993026, posted by the author ch6vip, tagged "open-source promotion"): as of now 1,440 views, 77 likes, 32 replies. Most replies say "the UI looks great", "it can basically replace Fanqie Novel and Hongguo Shorts", "please make iOS / HarmonyOS / desktop versions". The README credits LINUX DO at the end. This is a seed audience, not a large one. The library has only 10-12 102 stars.

2. **Bilibili software-recommendation uploaders, the main engine** :
    - Qinglin Tongxue BV1gMpE6cEfP (10-11) 7,637 views / 327 favorites
    - Pojie Treasury BV1ccpB6iEJU (10-13) 2,278 views
    - **Treasure Research Society BV1mSpU6kEHt (10-14) 101,657 views / 3,709 favorites** , titled "Super hyped! Github has another crazy tool! The open-source modded version of Fanqie..." The cloud-drive link is in the description
    - Ciyuan Game Hall (10-23) 1,510; Net Treasure Society (10-22) 818; Shanhai Flower BV1tkxH65EUr (10-31) 13,854 views / 343 favorites; also Yan Lehe UI (10-14) and Super-Loves-Omelette (10-29), who nearly copied Treasure Research Society's title word for word
    - The timing lines up: Treasure Research Society posted its video on 10-14, 10-15 +48, and **10-16 +216 was the biggest single-day gain of the whole run** (v1.0.121 was released the same day). Issue #30 (10-15) is titled "someone on Bilibili is promoting your app, suggest laying low for a bit" and links exactly BV1mSpU6kEHt; a commenter said "what a coincidence, I found it from Bilibili too." (View counts from Bilibili's public API 11-06)

3. **Long tail of APK download sites / resource sites reposting it** : dozens of sites including 32r.com, shopwind.cn, chushou.tv, vqs.com, kfcrm.com, lcks.com.cn, j9p.com, ycoo.net, ckbf88.com, and yunpan1 forums list it under the names "Fanqie Shop" and "Shijin Shop" (package com.fqapp.fqapp), tracking up to v1.0.200. These sites live on SEO for search terms like "Fanqie no ads", effectively spreading it for free. CSDN and codekk also have listing pages.

4. **On GitHub itself** : a LINUX DO post has someone saying "I came across your project on G-site yesterday." After the repo had existed for 60 days (about 10-31), it made the language daily trending list for 5 days (data card trending_days_any=5), but never the all-GitHub list. This is a later supplementary traffic source, not what got it started.

5. **Nothing found** : X (x-radar searches for fqapp / Shijin Shop / Fanqie Shop, 60 items in the last 0 days), HN, paid ads, media coverage. The author has no social accounts of their own to run.

### Why users come now and why they stay

- **The pain point is real and the market is big** : Fanqie Novel and Hongguo Shorts are ByteDance's "free + ads" products with heavy ad loads (GitHub has the LSPosed ad-blocking module dev.operit.fanqiehook, Hongguo rules in GKD subscriptions, and home DNS ad-blocking abclq/home-dns-adblock; Bilibili has videos along the lines of "can't stand Fanqie Novel's constant ads"). For freeloaders, a login-free, ad-free client with the same content is a must-have.

- **2026 – November 9 on GitHub saw a whole wave of "Hongguo / Fanqie third-party clients"** . fqapp is one member of that wave, not an outlier: hongguo-desktop-releases (09-14,5.4k stars), guoapp Hongguo-jian (09-26,1.7k), hongguo-player (09-29,2.7k, +7 in the last 890 days), hongguo-drama (10-07,878), aston314 / hongguo-tv-releases, the openhongguo SDK (11 days, 329 stars), and more (github library 11-06). The guess is that someone first got the Hongguo / Fanqie request signing working (the post calls it the "four-god algorithm", generally meaning ByteDance's X-Gorgon / X-Argus / X-Ladon / X-Khronos device signature set). With AI-written code lowering the bar, dozens of clients appeared within a month. This has not been verified.

- **Retention comes from maintenance speed and polish** : about 950 commits in 66 days, version numbers going from 1.0.88 to 1.0.200. Feature requests from issues (regex text replacement, cross-chapter scrolling, split-screen player, backup and migration, renaming) were merged within days, and the author replied to issues personally. The most common praise on LINUX DO and Bilibili comments is "good-looking UI" and "high quality". The main reason aggregator clients like this die fastest is that they break whenever the upstream API changes, so an update cadence this fast is effectively keeping users alive.

### Differentiation (compared with peers)

| Competitors | Where | When | Scale | How fqapp is different |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tomato Free Novels / Hongguo short dramas / Tomato Audiobooks (ByteDance official) | iOS + Android | From 2019 / 2023 | Hundreds of millions of users (per public reporting, unverified) | The official apps are split into several separate apps, have ads, and require device registration or login; fqapp is one app with five formats, no ads, and no login. The same work can be switched between novel / short drama / audiobook directly |
| Open-source reader Legado + Fanqie book sources (e.g. the sysbbs "Fanqie four-in-one" book source, 2025-09) | Open-source Android | From ¥2019 | gedoor/legado 47k stars | Legado requires you to import book sources yourself, and server-side sources often break; fqapp ships built in, signs locally, and works out of the box, with native playback for short dramas and comic dramas |
| Fanqie novel downloaders (Tomato-Novel-Downloader 4.2k, Fanqie-novel-Downloader 2.9k, fanqienovel-downloader 2.4k) | Open source, desktop / CLI | 2024–2025 | Thousands of stars | These only export TXT / EPUB; fqapp is a full reading, serial-tracking, and audiobook client |
| Hongguo third-party clients (hongguo-desktop-releases 5.4k, hongguo-player 2.7k, guoapp 1.7k, hongguo-drama 878, assorted TV builds) | Open source / release-only, desktop / TV / Android | 2026-09~10 | From a hundred to five thousand stars | Most of them only do Hongguo short dramas, focusing on PC / big-screen TV; fqapp focuses on a phone-side "Fanqie all-in-one" aggregation (novels + paragraph comments + audiobooks + short dramas + comic dramas + comics), and is fully open source under GPL |
| "Danhua" (the Android app mentioned in the LINUX DO thread) | Android | Not verified | Not verified | According to the thread, it uses the same Fanqie source with no ads, but dropped comments; fqapp keeps Fanqie's paragraph comments and book reviews |
| denniemok/fanqie-novel-reader (Fanyue PWA) | Web | 2026-03 | 74 stars | Novels only, aimed at traditional-character users |
| Ad-blocking modules (LSPosed fanqiehook, GKD rules) | Android plugins | — | — | Need root or accessibility permissions; fqapp needs no root |

**Is differentiation why it took off?** Partly. The selling points repeated in the Bilibili titles are "one app that combines novels + short dramas + comic dramas + audiobooks really well" and "open-source and free on GitHub", which means aggregation and open source. Single-purpose Hongguo desktop clients have more stars (hongguo-desktop-releases 5.4k), so the core demand is really "free Fanqie content"; fqapp's spot in this wave is the "mobile all-in-one aggregation" version. The polish is what made uploaders willing to promote it and viewers willing to stay, and that is what sets it apart from the crowd of rougher clients from the same period.

### Visibility

It spread through small circles: one LINUX DO post (1.4k views), about ten Bilibili software-recommendation videos (biggest one 100k views), and a pile of APK reposting sites. X, media, and HN had nothing; there is no revenue to speak of (only tips, and the Afdian page doesn't show sponsor counts). It's no longer a secret in the freeware crowd, but nobody in the going-global / indie-dev circles is discussing it.

### Copycats

- linkuanb/huangfeng-xiaoshuo "Huangfeng Novel" (created 10-16): the description is copied word for word from "novel·short drama·comic drama·comics·audiobook content aggregation client (Flutter + Rust)", with only the brand color changed

- gv2546777222-ops/kaolact (created 11-05): the intro is identical word for word

- vdnight89/tomato-supermarket (10-18): "Windows desktop version of the Fanqie Novel aggregation client"

- yunleeeee/fqapp-macos (10-26): a macOS port

- Bilibili "Alabi" FQHouseOH: a HarmonyOS port, "aligned with the fqapp backend"; "68 Russian-source" fqapp Android 6 TV-adapted version (10-20)

- Download sites renamed it "Fanqie Shop" and "Fanqie Shop Free" and repackaged it

### Risks (which also explain the renaming)

Users in issue #30 warned "change the name soon or you'll get a lawyer's letter" and "look at what happened to NASTOOLS and legado." In v1.0.121 (10-16) the author de-branded, and 10-24 settled on the name "Shijin Shop" (commit "fqapp was just a temporary name during de-branding"). The whole model depends on ByteDance not changing its APIs and the legal side not acting; the README itself admits "upstream changes may temporarily affect it".

### Takeaways

- A "big company, free, with heavy ads" content product, with a clean third-party shell on top, naturally spreads well in the Chinese freeloader community. Bilibili software-recommendation uploaders will repost it on their own (they drive traffic with cloud-drive links), so no paid promotion is needed.

- Cold-start path: the LINUX DO open-source self-promotion post gets seed users and feedback, Bilibili uploaders pick it up and amplify it, and APK-site SEO long tails carry it from there. All three steps are zero-cost.

- Signing runs locally in the client with no server: there is no central node to shut down, and the author has no server costs.

- Maintenance speed is itself the moat: a new version every few days, issues answered the same day.

- Not recommended to copy: high copyright and unfair-competition risk, and no room for monetization (only tips).

### Uncertain

- Early releases got deleted, so total downloads are unknown.

- Not verified which "four-god algorithm" signatures it means or whether it builds on someone else's reverse-engineering. A commenter asked "is this based on 鱼佬's source?" and the author didn't directly answer.

- Whether ByteDance has sent a notice or is changing its APIs: 11-03 has a third-party Hongguo client with "emergency repair of playback" (LINUX DO MiniReel thread), so upstream is moving.

- Whether accounts like 宝藏研究社 are run by the author or the resource site: no evidence. They look like independent software-recommendation accounts.

- Couldn't find the scale or launch date of the "蛋花" App.
