Not a summary, a fold: TextFold gained over 900 stars in 33 days by launching on the third day after Claude Code mods were released

What it is A reader that runs on your own computer and also works as a Claude Code mod. It folds papers, web pages, files and AI replies into five levels, letting you expand from a chapter map down to the original text, level by level.

Why it took off It shipped a finished product right when Claude Code mods launched. "Not a summary but a reversible fold, with the top two levels being the author's own words" is a one-line pitch people can repeat. The author posted across multiple Reddit subs, HelloGitHub and Bilibili at the same time, and then a single GitHubDaily post brought 262 stars in three days.

BHow you could follow it Don't build a second TextFold. Take its playbook somewhere else: when a new agent platform opens a plugin hook, ship a "foldable reply" within three days, or move five-level folding onto code diffs, video transcripts, or meeting notes, areas it hasn't touched, and post across multiple communities at its pace.

Grade B: the same topic is already held by a fast-iterating, frequently posting project. The later cc-stretch only reached a few hundred stars and stalled, and the original project is cooling off too. The borrowable playbook and the open slots for switching platforms and content still exist, but the ceiling is around a thousand stars, and you'd be betting on the platform's next opening and your own posting execution. A research developer in Berlin created a repo on the third day after Anthropic released Claude Code mods, "folding" papers, web pages and AI replies into five levels, each level clickable back to the original text. Three days in, it had 923 stars and 80 forks after 33 days. The idea can be explained in one sentence, but what really pushed it out were the timing and the author's own rounds of posting. If you want a project that earns stars the same way, you can copy this playbook, but the topic has already been claimed by it.

A post with 20k views, 262 stars in three days

At 10 p.m. (Beijing time) on Oct 24, 2026, GitHubDaily, an X account with 91k followers, posted a long thread opening with a frustration many people share:

Papers are too long. If you ask AI to summarize them, it may drop key derivations and conditions. Going back to the original means searching for that passage all over again.

It then walks through TextFold's five levels: the finest is the full text; one level up becomes one to three key original sentences per paragraph; above that, the argument and reasons; then one sentence per section; and finally just the chapter topics. It ends with: "This design suits me better than only giving a one-page summary." By 11-06 the post had about 19.8k views and 359 likes.

Before it, the repo already had about 450 stars. Trendshift's daily numbers: 10-24 +73,10-25 +133 (the highest single day across the whole period), 10-26 +56. Three days brought 262, roughly thirty percent of today's total.

What it actually does

TextFold is a reader that runs on your own computer. Paste a web page, arXiv or Wikipedia link, or drop in a PDF, Word, PPT or EPUB, and it folds the full text by paragraph into five levels:

LevelEach paragraph becomesWhose words
1 FullOriginal paragraphThe author's
2 BriefOne to three key original sentencesThe author's
3 KeyArgument and reasonsWritten by AI, based on the level-2 original sentences
4 TakeawayOne line tying the section togetherAI
5 TopicA few words; the whole document becomes chapter cardsAI

The line on the README's hero image is its whole pitch: "Fold it, instead of summarizing it." Folding rather than summarizing away. Every paragraph can be expanded back to the author's exact words, with the original PDF page open alongside for comparison.

The same folding is also applied to agent replies: installed as a Claude Code mod, each reply collapses one level per keypress, and there's a corresponding extension for Pi. There are also Mac / Windows installers, a PyPI package (1,072 downloads in the past week, pypistats, 11-06), an online gallery, integrations with Zotero and Obsidian, and a recently added browser button. Bring your own model, with Ollama for local use. In 34 days 47 PRs were merged, the version reached v0.10.42, and only the author has been writing it.

Why now

It rode a newly opened window. Anthropic released Claude Code mods in Oct 1, and TextFold's repo was created in Oct 4 (then called PaperFold). By Oct 7 an AI tool directory already described it as "a plugin that folds Claude Code replies into five levels." Once mods came out, "agents write too much to read" was the first problem everyone wanted solved, and it was among the earliest to ship a finished product. The nearly identical cc-stretch only appeared in Oct 14 and has reached 431 stars, barely growing after 10-17.

The idea could be repeated in one line. GitHubDaily, the Chinese account Geek Lite (10-19,1,235 views), and comments on aggregator sites all repeat the same sentence: not a summary, a fold, with the top two levels being the author's own words. For the widespread unease about "AI summaries can't be trusted," it offered a visible answer.

The author knew how to post. Author Xia Chen does research in Berlin (Google Scholar lists TU Munich, with work on neuromorphic computing and human-AI alignment). Two months earlier, his previous project ThoughtDAG reached 136 points and 741 stars on Show HN; before that, a Claude Code skill that turned Xiaohongshu posts into Obsidian notes had 432 stars. This time he again followed the "I built an X" playbook.

Cooling off. Over the last 7 days +127; the first 7 days were +387; 11-05 and 11-06 are single digits. But the fork rate is about 8.7%, and PyPI sees thousands of downloads a week, so people are actually installing and using it, not just clicking star. No sign of star-farming.

The "read papers" box is crowded, and everyone is doing translation and Q&A. The small box of "graded, reversible, attributed to whoever said it" has only one full reader so far.

If it were you

B. Worth a try, but don't go after the same niche. "Fold Claude Code replies" and "graded paper reading" are already taken by a project that iterates fast and posts often. A second project doing the same thing, cc-stretch already showed the result: it stopped at four hundred-odd stars. What's worth following is two things behind it: shipping a finished product within three days whenever a platform opens a new extension point, and the pitch "not a summary, a reversible fold," which can be retold in one sentence. The ceiling is roughly a thousand stars; projects in this category mostly earn reputation and followers.

  • Who it suits: people fast enough to ship something installable and usable within a week; people who already have some presence on Reddit, Chinese developer circles, or X, or who will post subreddit by subreddit the way this author did.
  • Who it doesn't suit: people who want to just build a "better TextFold" (users have no reason to switch); people who can't produce an installer and an online demo and only ship a script; people who post once in one place and stop.
  • How to do it: three paths. First, switch platforms: as soon as agent tools like Codex, Cursor, or Gemini CLI open a similar plugin hook, ship a "fold replies" version immediately. Second, switch content: take the same five-level folding to things nobody has done yet, such as code diffs and PR descriptions, podcast and video transcripts, long emails and meeting notes, legal contracts. Third, wait for the next hook: watch the changelogs of each agent platform, and within three days of a new extension point, build the thing everyone wants to see first.
  • How to get stars: follow its rhythm. Put a clear GIF at the top of the README (theirs shows a paper folding and unfolding level by level). Post "I built X" on four or five related Reddit subreddits on the same day. On the Chinese side, submit to HelloGitHub and record a Bilibili demo. Then post a new feature every few days and wait for recommendation accounts like GitHubDaily to repost. Offer an installer, a PyPI package, and an online demo to keep the cost of "just try it" as low as possible.
  • Timing: the "switch platforms" path has to follow the platform. If you don't move within one or two weeks of a hook opening, you're late. The "switch content" path isn't time-critical, but the novelty of Claude Code mods probably lasts another month or two (estimate).
  • What would show you read it wrong: (1) TextFold or cc-stretch gets the same folding built into Claude Code soon after; that would mean this kind of feature gets absorbed by the platform, and building mods just does the platform's research for it. (2) Someone moves folding to code or video transcripts and only gets a few dozen stars; that would mean what moves people is the specific scene of "reading papers + AI replies," not folding itself. (3) Conversely, if the next platform (say Codex) opens plugins and a project built in three days reaches a thousand stars within a month, then "grab new hooks" is a path that really can be repeated.

Why chenxiachan/textfold (TextFold, formerly PaperFold) took off

Research date 2026-11-06. Channel: GitHub. Data comes from our github / hackernews / producthunt / x databases, trendshift, the GitHub API, and web pages found via Jina/Exa search.

One line

TextFold is a locally run reader (also a Python package and a Claude Code mod) that "folds" papers, web pages, files, and AI replies into five levels of detail, from full text down to a chapter map. It took off because of three things: timing (Claude Code had just released mods three days before the repo was built, and it was among the first "fold Claude replies" mods); the author already had a posting playbook (the previous project, ThoughtDAG, got 136 points on Show HN, and this time the author again posted on multiple Reddit subreddits, HelloGitHub, and Bilibili); and reposting by Chinese GitHub recommendation accounts (a single GitHubDaily post brought the highest single-day star gain of the whole run). The differentiator is reversibility: the first two levels keep the author's own words, and every level links back to the original. That is the point people repeat most when they pass it along.

1. Basic data

  • The repo was created 2026-10-04, originally named PaperFold, and renamed to TextFold sometime between 10-13 and 10-14 (a LinkedIn post from 10-13 still says PaperFold, while aibriefs already used TextFold by 10-15). As of 11-06 it had 923–930 stars and 80 forks, a fork-to-star ratio of about 8.7%. It has only 1 contributor, merged 47 PRs in 34 days, and is at v0.10.42 (trendshift, GitHub API).
  • Daily star gains (trendshift table): 10-05 +49 → 10-06 to 10-14 with single digits to low teens per day → 10-15 +58, 10-16 +85, 10-17 +58 → 10-18 to 10-22 at roughly 20 per day → 10-24 +73, 10-25 +133, 10-26 +56 → after 10-28, 10–24,11-05 per day, dropping to 8 and 4 by 11-06. In our database, gain_7d=127, prev_7d=387, status "cooling."
  • The PyPI package textfold had 1,072 downloads in the past week and 68 in the past day (pypistats, 11-06). So people are really installing it, not just starring it.
  • The repo was only 33 days old, short of the roughly 60-day threshold for trending, so it never appeared on trending. That tells you nothing about whether it's hot or cold.
  • The author is Xia Chen (chenxiachan), a researcher in Berlin; Google Scholar lists him at TUM (neuromorphic computing, human-AI alignment). Earlier work: ThoughtDAG (turns LLM conversations into an editable thought graph, 741 stars, 2026-08-15 points and 136 comments on Show HN), xhs-claude-skills (uses Claude Code to extract Xiaohongshu posts into Obsidian notes, 432 stars), and ds-note (a Chrome extension that saves DeepSeek conversations; 63). The author also forked a large batch of awesome lists between 8 and October (awesome-local-first, awesome-note-taking, awesome-mcp-servers, and others), which looks like groundwork for PRs to list their project (inferred; I didn't check each PR).

Channels I found nothing in: no HN thread about TextFold (our database only has ThoughtDAG and the same-named text expander); never on Product Hunt; no TikTok or ad activity found; none of the posts in our X database's circles mention it.

4. Why it took off

  1. Caught the platform event: Claude Code mods launched 10-01, TextFold's repo was created 10-04, and the earliest coverage described it as "Claude Code plugin that folds replies" (KBlip 10-07). "Agent replies are too long to read" was the problem everyone wanted to solve once mods came out. The similar cc-stretch 10-14 appeared only ten days later.
  2. The idea explains itself in one sentence and has a counterintuitive angle: "Not a summary, a fold; the first two levels use the author's own words, and you can click back to the original anytime." The reposted comments on Geek Lite, GitHubDaily, and trendshift ("breaks linear reading… refreshing") all paraphrase this point. GitHubDaily's original wording: "This design suits me better than just giving a one-page summary."
  3. The author had a ready-made launch playbook and an audience: ThoughtDAG hit the HN front page two months earlier, so the author knows how to write an "I built X" post. This time he posted in more than 5 Reddit communities at once, pushed HelloGitHub on the Chinese side, uploaded to Bilibili, and seeded both English and Chinese channels in parallel.
  4. The Chinese GitHub recommendation accounts brought the biggest wave: three days after one GitHubDaily post, the repo gained 262 stars, about 28% of its total.
  5. More than a demo, it actually installs and works: there are Mac and Windows installers, a PyPI package (roughly 1 thousand downloads a week), and an online gallery you can try directly. It also connects to Zotero, Obsidian, and a browser button, and it iterates fast (v0.10.42). A fork rate of 8.7% and the PyPI downloads both suggest people are really using it.

5. Differentiation

  • The core is reversible, graded compression, plus transparent sourcing: each level is labeled as "the author's words" or "the AI's words," any passage can be expanded back to the original, and you can open the PDF page alongside to compare. Competitors either give you a summary (SciSpace, NotebookLM, ChatPDF) or only translate without compressing (pdf2zh, Immersive Translate).
  • One folding format used in three places: the reader, Claude Code / Pi replies, and a CLI for agents (textfold get). The Claude Code mod level only does the splitting, without calling a model, so there is zero latency.
  • Local-first, bring your own model (Ollama works too): this suits researchers and developers well.
  • Are these differences why it took off? Partly, yes. Nearly all the reposted copy quotes the line "folding instead of summarizing," which shows the differentiation is the reason people share it. But the timing (the mods launch) and the author's distribution execution determined who saw it. cc-stretch had almost the same idea but only 431 stars, and it fizzled out after 10-17. The difference is that TextFold has a full reader and keeps posting consistently.

6. How visible it is

It's spreading within small circles. On the Chinese side, GitHubDaily and Geek Lite posted about it, HelloGitHub has a self-nomination, and Bilibili has 14K views. On the English side, it's mainly the author posting on Reddit, plus a pile of AI-tool aggregator sites that auto-ingest it. No mainstream press coverage, no HN front page, and it's free with no revenue to speak of.

7. Copycats

No clear copying. A similar idea exists in pro-vi/cc-stretch (10-14, a stretchtext reply tool for Claude Code, 431 stars), which may have been independent convergence. The Claude Code mods ecosystem also has several "compress / rewrite replies" mods (bionic reading, isas1/skills).

8. What others can borrow

  • A platform releases a new extension point (this time Claude Code mods), and within three days someone builds a tool that solves the most obvious pain point, then attaches it to a bigger product (the reader) so the mod drives traffic to the main product.
  • Turn the distrust of AI summaries into the selling point: expandable levels, labels showing whose words they are, and one click back to the original. It's explainable in one sentence, so people can repeat it as they share.
  • Seed English and Chinese channels at once: "I built" posts across multiple Reddit communities, a HelloGitHub self-nomination, and a Bilibili demo video, then wait for accounts like GitHubDaily to repost it.
  • Offer three entry points (installer, online gallery, PyPI package) to minimize the cost of trying it.

9. Still unclear

  • Who uploaded the Bilibili video (the author himself or a research-tool creator) is unverified.
  • I couldn't get the likes or view counts for the GitHubDaily post. It's also unclear whether the author submitted it or the account found it on its own.
  • Reddit post scores weren't retrieved (Reddit requires a captcha). It's unclear how much of the 10-15 wave came from Reddit, HelloGitHub, or Bilibili respectively.
  • The stargazer endpoint returned 404, so I can't assess the quality of the earliest starring accounts. No sign of star inflation found (the fork rate is normal and there are real downloads).
