# "Paid proxy services can be cancelled now": an Iranian developer wrapped an open-source circumvention core in a phone shell, and a Chinese YouTuber brought in half the users

**What it is** A free, open-source Android app (Windows version also available) for circumventing censorship. No need to buy nodes: it chains together free networks like Cloudflare WARP, Psiphon, and Tor into one-click connection, and can also turn your phone into a proxy for your computer.

**Why it took off** Iran's internet shutdowns and tightening controls created urgent demand for a tool you could install and connect with immediately. Aether, the core, had just gone viral but had no usable mobile client. This app filled that gap, and a Chinese circumvention YouTuber with 60K subscribers pushed it with "first on the internet, permanently free."

**C** **How you could follow** Stop building yet another Aether shell. Watch for the next anti-censorship core that just went viral but only has a command-line interface, and within two weeks build a one-click mobile client, or go after what it does poorly: verifiable builds, or new markets like Russian. First set up a Telegram channel in the local language, then DM YouTubers in each language to repost.

Grade C: the "borrow someone else's core, borrow someone else's mouth" playbook is worth learning, but there are already a dozen Aether phone shells and the core's author has joined in too, so the star ceiling for copycats is only a few hundred. The topic is also tied to the cracked-resource scene and legal risk, so following it for stars isn't worth it. What's going around in small circles

8 VPN is an Android circumvention client built single-handedly by Iranian developer clubapp8. It runs no servers of its own. It simply chains together Aether, the open-source core that went viral in July this year, plus Psiphon and Tor, into one-click connection. The repo is 21 days old with 264 stars, yet the APK has been downloaded over 14,000 times. Most downloaders aren't developers; they're people looking for a way around Iran's shutdowns, and Chinese users drawn in by a "permanently free" YouTube title. It shows that building a shell for a just-viral core can earn stars, but the path is already crowded with a dozen similar projects, and the ceiling is only a few hundred stars.

### a 9,600-view video

On the morning of Oct 21, 2026, the Chinese circumvention YouTube channel "Tech Sharing" (65.5K subscribers) posted a video: "[Dimensional Strike] Aether core + MASQUE new protocol! Hands-on with an open-source, permanently free tool: truly never disconnected." A companion blog post went up the same day, titled "First on the internet! Open-source, permanently free VPN tool!" The GitHub link it gave is 8vpn (then still named Mrmmd2004/8vpn).

That day 8vpn had 35 stars. The next day it had 59, and forks jumped from 1 to 8. Starting at 11 a.m. on 10-21, a string of Chinese usernames like guobao52, csnr5588, kinghui-001, and frank6816 began appearing in the fork list, and the timing matches the video release (GitHub forks API). By 11-06, the video had 9,637 views.

The pitch followed the Chinese "free proxy" playbook: permanently free, unlimited traffic, 4K-second connection, unlocks ChatGPT / Gemini / Netflix, and paid proxy services can now be cancelled. The author doesn't speak Chinese and did no promotion in Chinese-speaking communities.

### What it actually is

The first line of the README: "A lightweight Android VPN client built on the Aether core." Aether is an anti-censorship core open-sourced by CluvexStudio in July that uses Cloudflare WARP and the MASQUE protocol. It has gained 2,400 stars in two months, but it's only a command-line program, so on a phone it can only run inside Termux. 8vpn fills that missing graphical interface, plus a few extras:

- **Route switching** : Aether, Aether → Psiphon, Aether → Tor, Psiphon alone, Tor alone, plus the reverse Psiphon → MASQUE and Tor → MASQUE. Psiphon and Tor are often blocked in Iran, so first establishing a route through WARP and then layering on top lets you pick Psiphon's exit country, and use Tor to reach sites that block WARP IPs.

- **Turn your phone into a proxy** : turn on a hotspot or plug in USB, then enter the address and port the phone provides on your computer to route through it.

- **Pause without quitting** : pressing stop only turns off the VPN and leaves the core running, so you can switch out midway to use Iranian domestic banking apps.

- Persian / English interface with full right-to-left layout; a Windows version is also available.

Everything runs over existing free networks (WARP, Psiphon, Tor), so users don't need to buy nodes or import configs. The code is Kotlin + Jetpack Compose, licensed AGPL-3.0 to match Aether.

### 14,000 downloads, 264 stars

| Timeline | What happened | Stars (GitHub) |
|---|---|---|
| 10-16 | Repo created; 10-17 versions released in 10-27 ten days 7 | — |
| 10-21 / 10-22 | "Tech Sharing" posts a video and blog | 35 → 59 |
| 10-27 | Releases v5.8, adds hotspot / USB sharing, fixes the connection issue with MCI, Iran's largest carrier | 99 |
| 10-28 | Chinese channel "Aifenxiang" posts "Stop paying for VPNs! Free open-source Android tool: Aether + MASQUE new protocol", 4,673 views (whether it's about 8vpn is unverified) | 109 |
| 10-31 | +36 in a single day, the largest in the observation window; the Windows repo's stars also rose from 24 to 31 the same day, source not found | 163 |
| 11-02 | Persian YouTube channel mobamoz (10.6K subscribers) posts "This VPN is different! Aether + Tor + Psiphon, 8VPN", 4,179 views | 205 |
| 11-06 | Still gaining a dozen or two stars per day | 264,43 forks |

The download numbers (GitHub releases, 11-06) tell the real story: a single release v5.8 was downloaded 11,586 times, and across Android versions roughly 14.4K total; the Windows version got about 3,700 downloads. The ratio of downloads to stars is roughly 50:1. These are ordinary users who downloaded the APK and clicked a star on the way.

The other half of the traffic is in the author's own hands. His Telegram channel @Clubapp8 has 1.4K subscribers, with the bio "VPN | Cracked apps | Open-source / exclusive cracked tools." The release post from 10-27 got 2,110 views and says: "This version can install directly over v4.8", "If you don't need LAN sharing, skip this version", "Fixed the MCI connection issue", "Added the features you asked for", with links underneath to connection tutorials, troubleshooting, and "why is open source safe?" In the channel's pinned recommendations, he puts 8vpn first: "I made this myself, exclusive to the channel." All download links point to GitHub releases.

Channels that didn't work: in the past 30 days, searches for "8vpn" and "Aether VPN" on X returned only 0 results each. There was nothing on HN, Reddit, or in the media. Aether's official README recommends a different client and doesn't mention this one.

### Why now

On the Iranian side, 2026 January saw the longest nationwide internet shutdown on record since Freedom House began tracking, followed by war; in October, officials named Starlink as a target, and parliament was reviewing new internet control legislation (Iran International, 10-28), with carrier networks intermittently down. The channel's posts centered on the shutdowns and emphasized "all lines work." Users wanted something they could install and connect to without buying nodes.

On the Chinese side, circumvention YouTubers already rely on "free proxy" and "permanently free" titles to draw traffic and have been constantly hunting for new tools. Aether plus MASQUE was a new keyword, and "dimensional strike" and "first on the internet" gave it a story. They actively dig through Iranian GitHub circles for tools. The author spent nothing, and gained an extra market.

### Who else is doing the same thing

8vpn isn't the first, nor the most featureful:

| Project | Launched | Stars (11-06) | vs 8vpn |
|---|---|---|---|
| CluvexStudio/Aether | 2026-07 | 2,430 | the core itself, with no phone GUI |
| QW-AI-Code/Aether | 2026-07 | 625 | Same Aether Android shell, but it can also import V2Ray configs, scan for clean IPs, and has Tor chaining |
| mbm110/MSN-GUARD | 2026-08 | 725 | Nearly the same features, two months earlier |
| CluvexStudio/ZedSecure | 2026-09 | 771,7 days +185 | Aether's author's own multi-core client, growing faster than 8vpn this week |
| armanlife/arman-vpn-client | 2026-10 | 652,7 days +163 | Appeared in the same period, connects to users' own servers |
| mlmvpn/mlmvpn_android | 2026-06 | 659 | More engines (Xray, Geph, OpenVPN) |
| bepass-org/oblivion | 2024-02 | 4,892 | Previous-gen Iranian WARP client, growth has mostly stalled |
| v2rayNG / FlClash / Hiddify | Years | 34k to 65k | Mainstream in Chinese-speaking circles, you have to buy your own nodes |

Chinese-speaking circles already have one too: on Sep 27, the Chinese channel 科技自习室 promoted a client by a domestic developer built on Aether (hezhanleiok/aether), which got 4,300 plays.

So 8vpn's extra growth came from distribution, not a feature lead: it had a ready-made Telegram resource channel, and it was picked up by a Chinese blogger with 60k subscribers. Chain routing gave the blogger a 'different' angle, but the blogger is what actually brought people in.

### Its weak spots

- **It has nothing of its own.** The network is Cloudflare's, Psiphon's, and Tor's; the core is Aether's. If WARP's IPs get blocked in another round, or Aether's author ZedSecure ships a good phone client, its reason to exist is gone.

- **Trust rests on 'it's open source, so it's safe.'** The same channel distributes cracked apps; the code is almost entirely 'Add files via upload' commits from the web; v4.8 changed its signing key once and made users uninstall and reinstall. This is the worst thing you can have in a circumvention tool, and nobody has audited it.

- **The star ceiling is low.** Even the best in its category only reaches a few hundred to two thousand-plus stars. Users come to download the APK, not to read the code.

### If it were you

**Bottom line:** You can learn the distribution playbook of 'borrow someone else's core, borrow someone else's mouthpiece,' but building yet another Aether phone wrapper isn't worth it. There are already a dozen in the category, and the core's author has entered the market himself, so followers will likely stall at a hundred or two hundred stars.

**Best for:** developers who already build anti-censorship tools and know the Android networking stack (VpnService, sing-box, tun2socks), who are in or familiar with markets like Iran, Russia, or Myanmar where blocking keeps tightening, and who already have a local-language channel or community.

**Who it doesn't suit:** anyone who wants a clean open-source project to put on a résumé, since this topic is tied to the cracked-app and gray-market scene; and developers in mainland China, for whom writing and distributing circumvention tools carries real legal risk.

**How to do it:**

1. Skip this wave of Aether and watch the next one: when the next anti-blocking core that has just caught fire appears with only a command line and no decent phone client, build a one-tap-connect shell within two weeks. 8vpn still caught Aether's wave three months late, which suggests the window is measured in months.

2. Do what it didn't do well: reproducible builds, a fixed signing key, and clear statements about what you don't collect, making 'why you can trust it' the selling point; or move to a market and language nobody has touched yet, such as Russian, Burmese, or Turkmen.

3. Add small features based on local pain points: fix whatever carrier doesn't connect, share a hotspot with a computer, pause without quitting.

**How to acquire users:** start with a local-language Telegram channel where you post releases, tutorials, and 'what to do if it won't install'; use GitHub only to host the APKs. Then DM demos and a one-line hook ('no nodes needed,' 'free forever') to Chinese-, Persian-, and Russian-speaking circumvention YouTubers. They're short on new tools and will spread it themselves.

**When to get in early:** the Aether wave already looks past its peak, with ZedSecure and arman competing for it (inferred). When the next core appears is unpredictable; what you can do is build the channel and the shell's code in advance and wait.

**What would show you were wrong:** if 8vpn keeps adding a dozen-plus stars a day and downloads keep rising past mid-November, it means demand for an Aether shell is bigger than expected and late arrivals still have a share. Conversely, if ZedSecure ships a good phone client and 8vpn and its peers stop growing together, the path only worked in the few weeks after the core went viral.

## clubapp8/8vpn (8 VPN): why it took off

> Research date 2026-11-06. Data sources: our GitHub database (repo_profile / repo_day), GitHub API, public Telegram channel pages, YouTube Data API, Jina / Exa / Brave search.

### Bottom line

8 VPN is an Android wrapper, with a Windows version too, around the open-source circumvention core **Aether** (CluvexStudio, WARP / MASQUE), built by an Iranian developer that has recently taken off. It has no servers of its own. Its selling point is chaining Aether, Psiphon and Tor into "chained routing" (WARP first, then Psiphon / Tor), plus hotspot / USB tethering proxying and a Persian UI. There are two user groups: **Iranian users** (2026 years of long-term shutdowns and the war, and October's new internet-control bill under review), and the **Chinese circumvention community** (since 10-21, Chinese-language circumvention YouTubers have promoted it as "permanently free, unlimited data"). Stars come from these two groups' downloaders, who click the star on the way; the real download count is over ten thousand.

### 1. Basic data

- Repo created 2026-10-16, author's GitHub account clubapp8 (formerly Mrmmd2004; old links still redirect; account registered 2021 years ago, 65 followers). As of 11-06:264–269 stars and 43–45 forks; +137 in the last 7 days, +68 in the first 7 days (github repo_profile).

- Daily stars (github repo_day): 10-20 21 → 10-21 35 → 10-22 59 → 10-27 99 → 10-30 127 → **10-31 163 (single day +36, the largest in the observation window)** → 11-01 192 → 11-06 264.

- **Real downloads** (GitHub releases API, 11-06): v5.8 (released 10-27) at **11,586 downloads** for that one version; v4.8 423, v3.8 440, v2.8 1,630, and so on; Android totals about 14.4k. The Windows repo clubapp8/8VPN_Windows (60 stars) has 3,226 downloads for V3.8, and v4.8 (11-04) has 473 downloads. The download-to-star ratio is about 50:1, which suggests most people are ordinary users downloading the APK, not developers.

- Code: Kotlin + Jetpack Compose, AGPL-3.0 (Aether is AGPL, so this one has to follow suit). Commit history is almost entirely 'Add files via upload' from the web, built by one person and iterated fast: 7 versions shipped from 10-17 to 10-27 in ten days (v1 → v5.8).

- The author's account also opened a batch of small tool repos in the same period (local LLM UI, download manager, music player, Windscribe log-cleaning script, etc.); the Telegram channel @Clubapp8 (1.4k subscribers, single posts with 0.7–2.1k views) describes itself as 'VPN | Mod Apps | Open Source / exclusive cracked tools and programs.'

### 2. The competitive landscape (look at the peers first)

Open-source projects that 'wrap Cloudflare WARP / Psiphon / Tor in an Android client' are plentiful in Iranian circles; 8vpn came later and isn't large:

| Product | Form | Launched | Scale (GitHub repo 11-06) | How it differs from 8vpn |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CluvexStudio/Aether | Open-source core (Rust CLI, Termux / desktop) | 2026-07-14 | 2,430 stars, +7 in 58 days | 8vpn uses this one; it has no Android GUI of its own, so on phones it only runs through Termux |
| QW-AI-Code/Aether | Open-source Android GUI client | 2026-07-20 | 625 stars, +7 in 18 days | Also based on Aether, and can import V2Ray / Npvt configs, scan for clean IPs, and has Tor→Aether chain routing; heavier featurewise, and promoted by the community account beshkan (Instagram / Telegram) |
| MatinSenPai/Aether-GUI | Open-source desktop GUI client (Tauri) | 2026-07-14 | 1,032 stars | Desktop only; 8vpn focuses on phones |
| mbm110/MSN-GUARD | Open-source Android | 2026-08-06 | 725 stars, +7 in 26 days | Same features almost across the board (WireGuard, MASQUE, WARP-on-WARP, Psiphon, Tor); two months ahead of 8vpn |
| CluvexStudio/ZedSecure | Open-source multi-core client (built by the Aether author himself) | 2026-09-29 | 771 stars, +7 in 185 days | Xray + sing-box + Psiphon + Tor + DNS tunnel, wider scope; grew faster than 8vpn this week |
| mlmvpn/mlmvpn_android | Open-source multi-engine Android | 2026-06-12 | 659 stars, +7 in 65 days | More engines (Xray / WARP / Psiphon / Tor / Geph / OpenVPN) |
| armanlife/arman-vpn-client | Open-source, multi-platform | 2026-10-18 | 652 stars, +7 in 163 days | Connects to users' own servers / subscriptions; showed up around the same time and is growing faster |
| bepass-org/oblivion(+ desktop) | Open-source WARP client | 2024-02 | 4,892 stars / 8,391 stars, growth has basically stalled | Previous-generation Iranian WARP client (warp-plus core), now barely growing |
| shirokhorshid-android | Community fork of Psiphon for Android | 2026-02 | 1,640 stars | Psiphon only |
| UnboundTechCo/defyxVPN | Open-source Flutter VPN | 2025-06 | 900 stars | Runs its own service, different approach |
| Official Psiphon / Lantern / Windscribe | Store app | Years | tens of millions | Has its own servers; when 8vpn's channel can't connect via 8vpn, it also tells users to install Lantern, yam yam, and Windscribe |
| Mainstream in Chinese circles: v2rayNG, FlClash, Hiddify | Open-source Android | Years | 65k / 61k / 34k stars | You have to buy a proxy service or subscription yourself; 8vpn needs no nodes and connects out of the box (via the free WARP / Psiphon / Tor networks) |

Bottom line: lots of similar apps, 8vpn is neither the first nor the most complete. 7 days and +137 stars puts it near the top of this niche (ZedSecure +185, arman +163), but the absolute numbers are small.

### 3. Growth tactics (where users come from)

1. **Chinese anti-censorship YouTube creator: the biggest external source, confirmed**
    - "Tech Sharing" (65.5K subscribers) 2026-10-21 09:21 UTC posted "[Dimensionality Strike] Aether core + MASQUE new protocol! Hands-on with an open-source, free-forever tool: truly never goes dark," 11-06 9,637 views. A companion blog, kjgx668.blogspot.com, published "World exclusive! Open-source, free-forever VPN miracle! … Aether core!" the same day, with the GitHub link in the post pointing to Mrmmd2004/8vpn. The timing lines up with the +24 stars jump from 10-21 to 10-22. The fork list starts from 10-21 11:27 and runs through a string of Chinese usernames (guobao52, csnr5588, kinghui-001, frank6816, piggyofbetty…, GitHub forks API), and the fork times match the video's publish time.
    - Aifenxiang on Bilibili posted "Stop paying for a VPN! Free open-source Android gem: Aether + the new MASQUE protocol" 2026-10-28, with 4,673 plays. The description mentions "MASQUE, Psiphon and Tor chained relays", which matches the features of 8vpn, but whether the video is actually about 8vpn hasn't been verified.
    - The pitch is the standard Chinese "free-ride on paid proxy services" framing: "you can cancel your paid proxy subscription now", "free forever, unlimited traffic", "4K-second connect, unlocks ChatGPT/Gemini/Netflix".

2. **The author's own Telegram channel @Clubapp8, confirmed** : 1.4K subscribers, release posts get 1.5–2.1K views. It publishes connection tutorials in Persian, troubleshooting for install failures, and "open source means safe"; download links point straight to GitHub releases. The channel runs an Iranian "VPN + cracked apps" resource feed, and 8vpn is its flagship product.

3. **Persian YouTube — confirmed** : mobamoz (10.6K subscribers) posted "This VPN is different! Aether + Tor + Psiphon, Windows and Android | 8VPN" on 2026-11-02, with 4,179 views and 99 likes. It lines up with the steady gain of 12~19 stars per day that began on 11-02.

4. **APK mirror site** : appteka.store hosts v1.8 and v2.8 (10-19).

5. **Riding the Aether core's buzz** : Aether launched in July and got 2,400 stars in two months. Iranian community accounts (beshkan / tavaana) kept promoting it on Instagram. But Aether's official README recommends PattNG and doesn't mention 8vpn, so 8vpn gets no official referral (read via the GitHub API from Aether's README).

6. **Source of 10-31's +36 on a single day not found** : the Windows repo also jumped from 24 to 31 that same day, possibly a repost by a large Chinese or Persian Telegram channel. Unverified.

7. Not found: X discussion (x-radar searched "8vpn" and "Aether VPN" over the last 30–60 days and returned 0 results each), HN, Reddit, press coverage, or ads.

### 4. Why it took off

- **Timing (Iran side)** : In 2026 January, Iran imposed the longest nationwide internet blackout on record since Freedom House began tracking (English Wikipedia, "2026 Internet blackout in Iran"; Freedom on the Net 2026). Later came the war with the US and Israel. In October, officials named Starlink as a target (Al Jazeera 10-14), and parliament is reviewing a new internet control bill (Iran International 10-28). Local news outlet 10-27 has continued reporting on intermittent carrier network outages. The channel's posts also revolve around blackouts: pinned recommendations for Thefeed, a domestic messaging tool for use during outages, and an offline AI tool, emphasizing that they "work on every line and network". It also specifically fixed the issue where Hamrah-e Aval (MCI), Iran's largest carrier, couldn't connect. Iranian users urgently need tools that connect without buying a node.

- **Free, zero configuration** : It runs on existing free networks like Cloudflare WARP, Psiphon and Tor. Users don't buy subscriptions or import configs. Chinese creators sell it on "no paying for a proxy service".

- **Chained routing** : Psiphon and Tor are often blocked in Iran itself. 8vpn first opens a path through Aether / WARP, then layers Psiphon / Tor on top ("Aether → Psiphon", "Aether → Tor", and the reverse), giving access to Psiphon's exit countries and letting users reach sites that block WARP IPs via Tor. The Persian video titles emphasize exactly this ("This VPN is different").

- **Small features that matter to users** : hotspot / USB tethering proxy (phones can connect, and computers get internet through the phone; v5.8 added it, and v5.8 is the most-downloaded version at 11.6k), pause the VPN without stopping the core (so domestic Iranian banking apps still work), a Persian RTL interface, and a Windows version.

- **Fast-moving author who takes requests in the channel** : 10 versions in 7 days, with release notes saying "added the features you asked for".

### 5. What's the differentiation, and is it why it broke out?

Three points of differentiation: (1) in one lightweight Android client, it combines Aether (WARP / MASQUE), Psiphon and Tor into routes that can be chained together; (2) it turns the phone into a hotspot proxy shared with computers and other devices; (3) it has a Persian interface, plus a companion Telegram channel and a Windows version. But none of this is **exclusive** : MSN-GUARD has nearly identical features and launched two months earlier, and QW-AI-Code/Aether also has chained routing with even more features. 8vpn grew somewhat faster than its peers **mainly because of distribution, not feature leadership** : the author has his own Telegram resource channel, and it happened to get picked up by Chinese anti-censorship YouTuber "Tech Sharing", who pushed it as "first on the web / free forever" (9.6K views, a run of Chinese forks). Persian YouTubers followed. The feature differences gave creators a "this one is different" angle, but it's the creators who brought the people in.

### 6. Visibility / copycats

- Visibility: **spreading within small circles** . Chinese anti-censorship YouTube (two videos, roughly 14k views combined) and Persian Telegram / YouTube are passing it around. Nothing in the X corpus, no press coverage. Projects like this are free by design, so there's no revenue to disclose.

- Copycats: none specifically yet. On GitHub there are only direct forks like liuzhenwu593-droid/8vpn and designerkiyan-maker/8vpn. The real competition is a whole batch of "Aether shells" (see table above), and they appeared earlier than it did.

### 7. Takeaways

- Pick an open-source core that just went viral but has no good mobile client yet (here, Aether), quickly build a one-tap Android shell that chains several free networks together, and pitch it as "chained anti-blocking".

- Target two blocked markets with one product (Iran + China): Chinese anti-censorship YouTubers actively repost overseas open-source tools and earn from "free-ride / free forever" titles and traffic; the author doesn't have to do any Chinese promotion himself.

- Run a self-hosted Telegram channel as the distribution and support hub, with release notes, tutorials and install troubleshooting all in one place, while GitHub releases only host the APKs.

- Build features around local pain points: carrier compatibility, hotspot sharing to computers, and pausing the VPN so domestic banking apps work.

### 8. Still unclear

- Source of 10-31's +36 stars in one day (a guess: a large Telegram channel repost, unverified).

- Whether the "Love Sharing" video is actually about 8vpn (very likely from the feature description, unverified).

- Stargazer breakdown: the GitHub stargazers API returns 404 for this repo, so star timestamps and accounts aren't visible, and I can't judge from accounts whether stars were bought. The fork accounts mix Chinese and Persian usernames and look like real users.

- How many downloads come from Iranian vs. Chinese users, and daily active users.

- Security: the author's channel also distributes cracked apps, most repo code was uploaded via the web interface, and the build signing key was replaced once (v4.8 requires uninstalling and reinstalling). Security risks have not been audited.
