animate: an open-sourced "Level 4" from a YouTuber with 180k subscribers, 1,500 stars in a month

What it is: an open-source skill for Claude Code that uses code to draw short animations frame by frame on a web canvas, adds music, and renders them to MP4. It ships with 7 art styles, and can also build a new style from your reference images. Before starting, it has you confirm the story, tone, and storyboard.

Why it blew up The author is a Claude Code tutorial creator with 183k subscribers. His video on 10-06 (218k views) linked the repo straight in the description. Two days later Anthropic launched Claude Motion, "Claude can make videos" became a hot topic, and this became the free, local, ready-made alternative. After that, Instagram and TikTok repost accounts and the author's own "comment animate" lead-magnet posts pushed it two more rounds.

CHow you could follow it If you have your own content channel, copy the combo: a multi-part tutorial video whose last part is your open-source skill, with a hero image showing a finished collage. Pick a topic outside what it covers, like a language community or a specific use case (store preview videos, paper-summary animations), and publish one to two weeks before or after the next official launch.

C grade: it took off on the author's own channel and the timing of Claude Motion's launch. Followers can't borrow either. Several similar projects already have tens of thousands of stars plus an official feature, and single-style copycats have stalled at a few hundred stars. The tactics are worth learning, but copying the project itself isn't worth it. Chatter in small circles

On 2026 Oct 6, YouTuber Chase Hannegan posted a 14-minute video titled "Claude Now Does Video (FOR FREE) Thanks To JavaScript". The first resource in the description says "Free animate skill", and the repo is linked there. By 11-06, the video had 218k views and the repo had 1,562 stars and 202 forks. It took off on the author's own channel, plus Anthropic's official Claude Motion launch two days later. Followers can't borrow either of those.

What it is

An open-source skill (plugin) for Claude Code. You type one line, /animate a 45-second history of the bicycle, cut paper (a 45-second paper-cut history of the bicycle), and it draws the animation frame by frame on a web <canvas> page, synthesizes a soundtrack with code, then uses a headless browser to capture frames and ffmpeg to encode an MP4. No video-generation model is involved anywhere in the process. Claude writes the code that draws every frame, and the same frame comes out identical every time.

Ships with 7 styles: paper cut, pen crosshatch, riso print, sketchbook, manim-style math explainers, pixel art, and isometric line art. The README also has an "eighth style": give it a few reference images or a video, and it measures the palette, line weight, texture, and edit rhythm, saves the result as a new style, and you can reuse it.

Its most careful feature is "confirm before drawing." Before it starts, you approve three things: the story outline (how many parts and what each covers; it checks facts online), two to four style frames, and the full storyboard. Only after all three are approved does it start animating. After rendering, it reviews its own output: whether cuts land on the beat, whether text gets clipped, whether the loudness is high enough. It can also add ElevenLabs narration with word-level timing, cut to the beat of a song you provide, drop real screenshots of your product page into the animation, and export one asset in four aspect ratios: 9:16, 1:1, 4:5, and 16:9.

MIT license. Install with one line: /plugin marketplace add cth9191/animate. The author wrote the code together with Claude, and the contributor list has only those two names.

Why it took off

First, the author is the channel. Chase AI has 183k subscribers and focuses on Claude Code. Over the past two months, most of his videos got between 50k and 420k views, and his description links to his paid community. That 10-06 video walks through making videos with Claude Code in four parts. Part one is just a prompt (he ran the same prompt at low, high, and extra-high thinking effort, said the extra-high run took about 8 hours, and noted that low and high were already enough). Part two adds a loop of screenshots and review. Part three feeds in reference images. Part four packages the whole workflow as a skill, which is this repo. By views, roughly every 150 views turned into 1 stars (estimate).

Second, two days later the official launch pushed the topic onto the trending charts. 10-08 Anthropic launched Claude Motion, first for Team and Enterprise plans, and 10-09 opened it to all plans. "Claude can make videos" instantly became a web-wide topic, and a TikTok explaining Claude Motion got 340k views. People who wanted something "free, local, with custom styles" searched and found animate. Trendshift's daily data shows its first wave of stars landed on 10-09 (+41) and 10-10 (+145). 10-10 also reached #17 on Trendshift's JavaScript chart, and that was its only appearance for the whole period.

Third, the README's hero image is built to be reposted. The first image is one frame from each of the 7 styles, tiled together, with one install command below it. Instagram and TikTok accounts running "comment ANIMATE and I'll DM you the link" promoted it from 10-09 to 10-21: githubsignals' TikTok got 22.9k views, a Vietnamese account, ainativelab, got 14.6k views, and Pedro | AI Technologist named cth9191 directly on Instagram.

Fourth, it got revived again in early November. From 10-15 to 10-29 it gained only 16 to 39 stars a day. From 10-31 to 11-05 it was back to 56 to 103 a day. Over the same period, anidoodle, another style-focused skill, gained only 7 to 22 a day, so the whole category wasn't surging. The timing matches several "Comment "animate" to get my Claude Video Editing Masterclass + Skills" posts the author put up on Instagram (@chase.h.ai) between 11-02 and 11-05. I couldn't verify whether the DMs sent this repo (inference).

The product is complete enough that people who watched the video and installed it stuck around: forks make up 13% of stars, so plenty of people actually installed it. But that isn't what drove the growth. The repo has had no commits since 10-05, no releases, and no merged PRs. The stars climbed while the author stopped updating entirely.

Who it's competing with

Crowded. After 9-22 Opus 5.5 launched, "drawing animation frame by frame in JS" first went viral in a batch of viral videos, then the official team turned it into a feature. Numbers come from GitHub and Trendshift, 11-06.

In this table, animate sits in the middle. It has the fewest styles; its strengths are its narrative rules (8 short-film structures, rules like "put the loudest moment right after silence") and the three confirmation gates.

The last row is worth a closer look. Around 11-01, Mr omi posted "How to Make Viral Animated Shorts Using Claude", which got 5k views in 629 days. His repo picked up over a thousand stars within days, using the same playbook as animate. In this category, whoever has the video audience gets the stars.

Could I follow it?

Building a "Claude code animation" skill today probably won't get you this kind of traction. Three reasons: first, the category already has several projects with tens of thousands of stars, plus an official feature; second, animate's traffic came from its author's own channel, which followers don't have; third, the wave from the official launch has been over for almost a month.

Single-style small skills already exist and haven't done well: 0xS4N4TG/papercut-explainer only does paper cut and has 139 stars; YIAN6557/eian-riso-broll only does riso and has 358 stars. Both were created in mid-October.

What you can take is the playbook: a tutorial video and a free repo, with the repo as the final part of the video, plus a "see everything in one image" hero image that accounts can repost after a screenshot.

If it were you

C: worth learning from, but copying it isn't a great deal. It took off on the author's own 180k-subscriber channel and on the timing of an official launch, and you can't borrow either. Several similar projects already have tens of thousands of stars, plus an official feature. What's worth learning is the "video + free repo" combo. Use it again with a different topic next time.

Who it suits: people who already have a content channel. Creators on YouTube, Bilibili, Xiaohongshu, or Douyin with tens of thousands of followers who cover AI tools, already have a workflow they use, and are willing to package it as an open-source skill.

Who it doesn't suit: people with no audience of their own who plan to rely only on organic GitHub traffic; people who want to build another general-purpose "multi-style code animation" skill (projects with 66, 36, and 32 styles already exist); people who want to break in with a single style (both of the projects above have stalled at a few hundred stars).

How to do it:

  • Change the ecosystem, not the style. There's already huashu-art-motion in Chinese; I haven't seen a substantial equivalent in Japanese, Korean, or Spanish-speaking communities (inference, I didn't check each one). Sample videos that narrate in the local language and cover local topics will do more for you than adding more styles.
  • Build the part it didn't finish. The README says "coming soon" for a WebGL dynamic-design style (raymarching 3D, motion blur, glow). It hasn't shipped, and the project itself admits the gap.
  • Or build one specific use case and do it best: store preview videos for apps, 1-minute summary animations for papers, vertical knowledge cards for Xiaohongshu. These are easier to pitch than a general "can draw anything" tool, and easier to repost.
  • Whatever you build, put a collage of all the finished outputs in the README hero image, with one install command below it.

How to get users: video first, then the repo. Record a 10 to 15 minute tutorial in parts (from "just write a prompt" to "package it as a skill"), with the last part being your repo, and put the link in the first line of the description. Cut three to five vertical clips for TikTok, Instagram, and Xiaohongshu, each with a line like "comment a keyword to get the link." Send them directly to accounts like githubsignals that repost GitHub projects. When the buzz fades after two or three weeks, post another keyword lead-magnet round and re-promote the old videos. That's how animate's second wave happened (inference).

When to launch: one to two weeks before or after the next major model release or official video feature. Animate's video went out two days before Claude Motion and rode the search demand from the official launch. That wave is over now, so don't rush to catch up. Prepare sample reels and videos, and wait for the next moment.

Signs you've misread the situation: ① Before mid-December, someone without their own channel, relying only on GitHub and Reddit posts, gets a similar skill past 1,000 stars. That would show the category can earn stars from the product alone, which makes it worth building. ② Animate keeps gaining at least +30 a day through December, even though its author has stopped promoting it. That would show real demand, not just viewers clicking along. ③ Claude Motion builds custom styles, your own music, and multiple aspect ratios into the official feature. In that case, there's little room left for an open-source skill on this path.

cth9191/animate: why it works

Research date 2026-11-06. Data from: data card (our github repo), GitHub repo page, Trendshift, YouTube page metadata, Instagram/TikTok (TikHub), Jina search. GitHub API was rate-limited that day, so commit history and similar details come from web pages.

One line

A Claude Code skill/plugin: draws short animations frame by frame on a <canvas>, generates procedural soundtracks, and renders to MP4 with a headless browser plus ffmpeg. Ships with 7 built-in styles (papercut, cross-hatch, riso screenprint, sketchbook, manim-style math, pixel, isometric), and can build new styles from reference images you provide. The workflow confirms three things (story table → style frame → storyboard) before drawing starts. Author cth9191 is Chase Hannegan, host of the YouTube channel "Chase AI" (183k subs), who teaches Claude Code and sells a paid Skool community.

Bottom line: it took off from the author's own YouTube video. On 2026-10-06 the author posted "Claude Now Does Video (FOR FREE) Thanks To JavaScript" (218k views so far), and the first resource in its description is this repo. Two days later (10-08) Anthropic launched the official Claude Motion, and "Claude making video with code" became a全网 topic overnight. Afterwards, "comment ANIMATE and I'll send the link" repost accounts on Instagram/TikTok kept pushing it. Starting 10-31 it accelerated again, which lines up with the author's Instagram "Comment 'animate'" funnel posts. The product itself is complete (storyboard confirmation, automatic review, voiceover timing, beat-synced cuts), which lets it hold up against peers, but that is not what drove the volume.

Growth data

  • Data card (our github repo): created 10-04, 33 days in at 1562★, 202 forks (fork/star about 13%); last 7 days +488, first 7 days +192, status "accelerating"; single-day peak +134 (10-11).
  • Trendshift day by day (https://trendshift.io/repositories/292264): from 10-06 to 10-08 gained 0 stars but forks grew by 30; 10-09 +41; 10-10 +145 (that day it hit #17 on the Trendshift JavaScript chart, the only chart appearance of the whole period); 10-11 to 10-14 +59~83 per day; 10-15 to 10-29 fell back to +16~39 per day; 10-30 to 11-04 back to +55~88 per day; 11-06 +21. One-month total +1349★, +206 forks.
  • Our repo (repo_day), by Beijing time: 10-31 +70,11-01, +103,11-02, +65,11-03, +81,11-04, +56,11-05, +73. Similar repos did not rise at the same time; for example alexgreensh/anidoodle gained only +7~22 per day. So this wave came from animate's own traffic sources, not a category-wide rise.
  • The repo has had no new commits since 10-05 (GitHub page "Updated Oct 5"; Trendshift shows last commit about a month ago), no releases, and no merged PRs. Only two contributors: cth9191 and claude. The code was written by the author together with Claude.

This category has gotten crowded in 2026-09 to October. After Opus 5.5 (9-22) launched, "frame-by-frame animation in JS" first blew up in viral videos, then Anthropic turned it into an official feature, Claude Motion, 10-08.

Takeaway: animate is mid-sized in its category. Bigger ones include the official Claude Motion and a few template libraries with tens of thousands of stars.

Growth tactics (evidence)

  1. The author's own long-form YouTube video (the main driver, confirmed). "Claude Now Does Video (FOR FREE) Thanks To JavaScript" went up 2026-10-06 17:00 UTC, with 218K views and about 3.7K likes. The original description reads "RESOURCES FROM THIS VIDEO: ➡️ Free animate skill: github.com/cth9191/animate". Section 4 of the video, "Level 4: Skills", is about this skill. The channel has 183K subscribers, and over the past two months several of its videos have landed between 50K and 420K views. This is the author's own audience.
  2. Platform event: Claude Motion launch (timing matches, indirect evidence). On 10-08/09 Anthropic launched Claude Motion. Animate's first wave of stars fell on 10-09 and 10-10 (+41 and +145). The "Claude can make video" topic was amplified by the official launch, and people searching for it found a free, local, style-swappable alternative.
  3. Instagram/TikTok repost accounts and "comment keyword for the link" accounts (confirmed):
    • githubsignals (IG 10-09, TikTok github.signals 10-09 views 22.9k, 1120 likes; posted another on 10-29 with 10.9k views);
    • Pedro | AI Technologist (IG 10-15, "Comment \"ANIMATE\" and I'll send you the repo link", caption names cth9191);
    • @repo.creative (IG 10-14, "This Free Claude Skill Makes Animated Shorts In 7 Styles");
    • Vietnamese account ainativelab (TikTok 10-1.91M views, 747 likes); small accounts such as prinonturio (10-10) and aijosue (10-21);
    • dhaibuilds (TikTok 10-31, IG 11-05 "Comment \"EXPLAINER\"").
  4. The author's own Instagram funnel posts (timing matches, content not verified). @chase.h.ai posted "Comment \"animate\" to get my Claude Video Editing Masterclass + Skills" and "… + the VFX skill pack" on 11-02, 11-04 (two posts), and 11-05 (post dates decoded from IG post IDs). The second acceleration from 10-31 to 11-05 in our repo data overlaps with these posts. Whether the "Skills" sent in DMs included this repo could not be verified.
  5. Automatically indexed by skill directories (confirmed): SkillsLLM, TypingMind skills, Clelp, Diffusion Index (Kymata Labs), Trendshift. Supports one-line install via /plugin marketplace add cth9191/animate.
  6. Reddit (partly confirmed): r/ClaudeWorkflows has a workflow post making shorts with animate; r/aigamedev has "Claude w/ Remotion, animate skill, and PixelLab"; r/claudeskills has a roundup "9 Claude skills for motion design". Reddit blocks scraping, so upvotes and dates were not verified.
  7. X: x-radar's local corpus returns nothing for cth9191 or this repo. X is not a main channel (corpus coverage is also limited).
  8. Ads / PH / HN: nothing found.

Why it took off

  • The author has their own distribution: a Claude Code tutorial channel with 183k subscribers, where a single 218k-view video links straight to the repo. By views, roughly every 150 views turned into 1 stars.
  • Rode the window around the official launch: the video went out two days before Claude Motion; once the official launch amplified demand, it became the ready-made answer for "free, local, open-source."
  • Material suited to short-video re-sharing: the README's first image is a collage of 7 styles, and usage is one line, /animate a 45-second history of the bicycle, cut paper. It fits repost accounts well: a screenshot plus a line like "comment ANIMATE," which they pushed in succession from 10-09 to 10-21.
  • The author's own Instagram traffic pushed the buzz up again (11-02 to 11-05). The timing lines up, but the content hasn't been verified.
  • Complete product, ready when users arrive: story, tone, and storyboard each need confirmation, plus real review (are cut points on the beat, are captions cut off, loudness), voiceover timed word by word, cutting to your own music beat, real product page captures, one render in 9:16/1:1/4:5/16:9 aspect ratios, and new styles from a reference image. Forks/stars around 13%, so plenty of people actually installed it.

Differentiation

  • Versus the official Claude Motion: local Claude Code skill, open source; generates new styles from a reference image and saves them to styles/<name>/ for reuse; cuts to your own music beat; captures real product UI; renders four aspect ratios at once; every frame is deterministic and reproducible.
  • Versus similar open-source skills: it leads with a "narrative grammar" (8 short-film structures, rules like "the loudest moment comes after the silence") and confirm-before-drawing gates, plus automated review you can measure. Its style count (7) is clearly lower than anidoodle (32), lemo-opuscar (66), and huashu-art-motion (36).
  • Differentiation isn't why it took off. The growth came from the author's own channel and the buzz from the official launch. Differentiation only keeps people who watched the video around to install and fork. Around the same time, Mr omi's single video pushed mromidev/claude-animated-shorts past a thousand stars in a few days. In this category, whoever has video traffic gets the stars.

How visible it is

It's spreading in small circles: the Chase AI YouTube channel (218k views), a batch of IG/TikTok repost accounts, a few skill directory sites, and small Reddit subs. No press coverage, no big X accounts retweeting it, and no HN or Product Hunt launch. Free and open source, so no revenue. The category is already crowded: there's an official Claude Motion, plus several similar repos with tens of thousands of stars.

Copycats

No library that directly copies animate turned up. There are only single-style skills with overlapping looks (papercut-explainer's paper cut, eian-riso-broll's risograph), all built in October, and nothing suggests they copied it.

Takeaways

  • People who already have a content channel: a tutorial video paired with a free repo, where the repo is the "Level 4" from the video. It turns viewers directly into stars and community leads (the first line of the intro is a paid Skool community).
  • Ship a free, local, customizable open-source version right before or after the official feature launch, and ride the search demand from the launch.
  • Make the README's hero image show all styles at once, then add a one-line command example, so repost accounts can screenshot and share it.
  • Re-promote old content with a "comment keyword" DM funnel post.

Still unclear

  • 10-06 to 10-08, Trendshift showed 0 stars but 30 forks. That could be Trendshift's counting method or a lag, or the repo may not have been public for those days. Not verified.
  • Whether the IG posts the author made between 11-02 and 11-05 were actually about this repo, and whether the 10-31 acceleration had another source.
  • The Reddit post's votes and date.
  • Real install and usage numbers. The author hasn't updated it since 10-05, so future maintenance is uncertain.

This article was written by AI from public data and the data we collect daily. Numbers are sourced, and inferences are labeled.
