# MFG Unlocker: an Australian university student used his midterm break to bring RTX 50's exclusive feature to older graphics cards

**What it is** An open-source mod. Drop one DLL into a game folder and RTX 40/30/20 cards can use the DLSS multi-frame generation that NVIDIA reserved for RTX 50. Later it added XeSS multi-frame generation and DLSS 5.

**Why it caught fire** The DLSS 5 leak made "NVIDIA is deliberately locking features" a hot topic. It was the first to ship a general, native, simple-to-install solution. NVIDIA's lock getting broken within hours became news, and Tom's Hardware, Wccftech and others then covered each version. Reddit, Nexus, and one-click installers distributed it.

**C** **How you could follow it** Don't build another frame-generation unlocker or wrapper; that slot is taken. Copy the playbook instead: build a list of features vendors say are impossible but are actually restricted by choice. When the next leak or product event happens, be first within the first week or two with a general, native, one-step install of the original, and publish each version on Reddit with press-style changelogs.

Grade C: the playbook is clear and learnable, but this slot has already been claimed by it and a few follow-ups with a thousand stars; later followers after October are in the single digits. Copying it requires hard-won reverse-engineering skills, and you have to wait for an event window you can't book. Public / widely discussed

MFG Unlocker is an open-source mod. Drop one DLL into a game folder and RTX 40 cards (later 30, 20) can run the DLSS multi-frame generation that NVIDIA reserved for RTX 50. The repo was created in Aug 29 and reached about 2,050 stars by Nov 6, with 577k cumulative Releases downloads. Below: what it is, why it's this one, where the stars and downloads came from, who's following it, and what you can learn from it if you want to build a project that gets stars too.

### One Google search every few months

In 2025, when the RTX 50 launched, dashdogy, a physics student in Australia with minors in math and space science, watched Digital Foundry's interview with NVIDIA engineers. The episode mentioned that multi-frame generation (MFG, which inserts 2 to 5 AI-generated frames between real ones) should theoretically also run on RTX 40, but NVIDIA never released it. "Every few months, I'd Google it to see if it had happened yet," he later told Tom's Hardware.

2026 August, a perfect storm: the DLSS 5 DLL leaked with the NBA 2K27 early build, and another modder, Uncle Burrito, ported DLSS 5 to RTX 40 within a day. The whole PC scene was asking, "Is NVIDIA's claim that older cards can't do this actually true, or are they just not allowing it?" It happened to be his midterm break. "I searched again, then thought, why not look myself? How hard could it be?"

One cloud server and a week of late nights later, he had a "real" MFG running on RTX 40. Repo created Aug 29, originally named RTX40MFG-Unlock. (Tom's Hardware interview, 10-12)

### What it actually does

The mechanism fits in one sentence: the game asks NVIDIA's Streamline and NGX components "how many frames can you generate?", and he changes that answer in memory. In his words: "On the 40 series, change 1 to 5, and the GPU thinks 'I'm a 4080, and I'm allowed to generate five frames.'" It runs NVIDIA's own DLSS frame generation code, not a replacement like FSR or Lossless Scaling that swaps in a different algorithm.

The hard part was the second step. The first version got sticky and laggy in Cyberpunk 2077 above 2x. He rented a cloud machine with an RTX Pro 6000 (Blackwell architecture), took kernel dumps while the GPU ran MFG, and compared them against the 40 series step by step. He found that the motion processing code on the 40 series was hardcoded to "insert one frame exactly between two frames", so with five frames, all five were squeezed into the middle. After the fix, the generated frames spread out evenly. He called this the hardest part of the whole project. He also said he used AI models to help analyze the reverse engineering.

Once it worked, usage was simple (README, v1.7.0):

1. Download the archive from Releases and unzip it;

2. Rename `MFGUnlocker.dll` to the name the game loads early, usually `version.dll` or `winmm.dll`;

3. Place it next to the game's main executable;

4. Enable frame generation in the game, and press Backspace to open the menu.

Over two-plus months it shipped 20 versions, and its scope kept growing: RTX 40 → RTX 30/20 → live switching of DLSS presets in-game → XeSS multi-frame generation (works on AMD and Intel GPUs) → DLSS 5. The docs were thorough too: a compatibility table of games, a troubleshooting guide, log templates, plus Vietnamese and French translations. The only "monetization" in the README is one line: "If this mod helped you, help me finish university on Ko-fi."

### Where the stars and downloads came from

Visible star counts start from Oct 17 (GitHub, daily):

| Date | Cumulative stars | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| 08-29 | 0 | Repo created |
| 10-17 | 1,369 | After several rounds of September media coverage |
| 10-22 | 1,577 | +89 in a single day, two days after v1.6.1 shipped; the Russian site ixbt reposted it the same day |
| 10-25 | 1,662 | v1.7.0 released |
| 11-05 | 1,870 | From 10-26, +9 to +33 per day |
| 11-06 | 1,985 | +115 in a single day, the biggest of the whole run; the same day, the universal-version page went live on Nexus Mods |

**First, a Reddit launch.** He posted the Cyberpunk-specific build on r/nvidia as "DLSS MFG working on Ada", then the universal build as "DLSS Multi Frame Generation On 40 Series For Any Game!", and cross-posted to niche communities like the Microsoft Flight Simulator forums. He returned to r/nvidia for a new post with every major version after that. I couldn't get the post scores.

**Second, an NVIDIA takedown that made headlines.** In early September, an NVIDIA App update blocked it, and it was re-enabled hours later. Tom's Hardware's September 4 headline read "NVIDIA App update failed to stop unofficial MFG mod, modder restores support within hours"; NeoGAF and several Reddit hardware subs ran versions like "NVIDIA blocked it, modder unlocked it again right away." "Player vs. tech giant" is the story PC communities love to share.

**Third, hardware media run multi-part coverage by version.** Tom's Hardware tested it on Cyberpunk 2077 in Sep 12, titled it "it really works", and linked his GitHub in the piece; Germany's igor'sLAB benchmarked it at 3x to 6x using 4090; then ran an interview in Oct 12. Wccftech has written a piece for nearly every major release, using the product name directly in titles, "Universal MFG Unlocker 1.5.0" and "1.6.1", and even published an install tutorial. To a large degree, these articles are rewriting his changelog.

**Fourth, others are doing the distribution for it.** The one-click installer DLSS5oneclick (1,277 stars) pulls the DLL for its MFG section straight from its Releases page. Nexus Mods has a Cyberpunk-specific package, and in Nov 6 a general-purpose page went up too. There are several YouTube tutorials titled "How to enable MFG on RTX 40." The +115 in Nov 6 likely came from the new Nexus page and a NoobFeed write-up that day (inference from timing, no referral data).

**What didn't happen:** X had only a handful of posts, with no big accounts pushing it; there were no ads, and none were needed, since it's a free mod.

### Who it's competing with

| Project | Launched | Scale | How it differs from MFG Unlocker |
|---|---|---|---|
| Native MFG on RTX 50 | 2025-01 | All RTX 50 | Officially only the 50 series |
| NVIDIA Smooth Motion | 2025 | Built into the driver | Driver-level 2x frame generation, without using the game's motion data |
| Lossless Scaling | From ¥2018 | Paid top-seller tool on Steam | Works on any GPU, but with worse image quality and latency |
| OptiScaler | 2023-12 | 12,392 stars | Upscaling and frame generation replacement framework; complements it and can be stacked with it |
| DLSS Enabler | 2024-06 | 1,405 stars | Passes off FSR3 frame generation as DLSS frame generation |
| MFGAdaUnlock-RenoDx | 2026-09-03 | 1,020 stars | A ReShade version built on its logic; requires ReShade first |
| DLSS Unlocked | 2026-09-04 | 1,052 stars | All-in-one tool; its MFG part mixes in FSR 3.1 |
| DLSS5oneclick | 2026-08-31 | 1,277 stars | One-click installer; its MFG uses this DLL directly |

(GitHub stars, 11-06.)

Two things stand out. First, the same wave of attention got split across several projects: the follow-up projects that appeared in early September each picked up over a thousand stars, so jumping on the wave early paid off. Second, this one got the most because it was the "original": earliest, most native, and easiest to install. Media articles linked to it, other tools pulled their DLL from it, and the authors of forks and GUI wrappers had to credit it in their READMEs.

By late October and early November, a batch of GUI managers wrapping it appeared (MFG-Unlocker-GUI, MFG-Unlock-Manager, MFG-Manager, etc.), each with only 0 to 3 stars. That wave has passed.

### What it still gets wrong

- **Games with anti-cheat can't use it.** The README says so, and people in the issues worry about bans. Competitive multiplayer is effectively off the table.

- **Older cards struggle more.** The author himself says latency and overhead are higher on RTX 30 and 20.

- **Its fate depends on NVIDIA.** NVIDIA has already blocked it once with an update; if NVIDIA someday brings MFG down to RTX 40 (DLSS 5 has already promised 40 series support), the project loses its main reason to exist.

- **Renaming and placing DLLs is still a barrier for beginners.** Each game needs a different filename, and you have to look it up in the compatibility table. That's why one-click installers and GUI wrappers appeared.

### If it were you

**In one line:** the GPU frame generation slot has already been split between it and a few follow-ups with a thousand stars each. A new one now would most likely stall in single digits. What's worth learning is the playbook: target features that the vendor says are impossible but are really just locked, and be the first to ship a working original when the news breaks.

**Who it suits:** developers who already reverse-engineer and understand a platform's internals (GPU drivers, game engines, phone OS, a software's licensing mechanism), ideally people already active in a player or user community who know what users most resent being "locked".

**Who it doesn't suit:** people who can't reverse-engineer and only want to build a GUI wrapper or one-click installer (that layer is already crowded, and the stars flow back to the original); anyone hoping to earn money from it, since its only revenue channel is Ko-fi tips.

**How to do it:**

1. Keep a running list of "locked features": functions limited to new hardware, new versions, or premium models, where the community suspects marketing locks. Check it periodically, as he did.

2. Wait for an event to ignite the topic: a leak, a product launch, an official statement. The first one or two weeks after the event are the window. In this MFG round, projects that appeared in the first few days of September got over a thousand stars, while those that showed up in late October got single digits.

3. Build a "universal + native + one-step install" version that isn't tied to one game or one model, and uses the vendor's own code rather than a substitute algorithm.

4. Iterate fast: fix within a day every time the vendor blocks it. Each block and unblock is itself a new news cycle.

**How to get stars and downloads:** post first on the relevant Reddit subs and niche forums, with titles like "X feature now works on Y"; post each major version separately, with a changelog written like a press release that hardware media will rewrite; host Releases on GitHub, with mod sites like Nexus as the second entry point; and welcome others to build one-click tools on your DLL, since they become a free distribution channel. Remember that stars are a by-product; for projects like this, real scale shows up in downloads.

**When it's too late:** the GPU round has already passed its window. The next opportunity depends on the next leak or product launch, which you can't book in advance. The best you can do is prepare the technical work and the feature list ahead of time.

**Signs you've misread it:** within a week of the event, your version isn't the earliest or the most usable one (someone has already shipped a working universal build, so you can only fork or wrap it); or your Reddit launch post gets no discussion and no media picks it up. That means users don't care that much about this "lock", or you're late. Switch targets, don't just post more.

## dashdogy/MFG-Unlocker (Universal MFG Unlocker): how it works

> Channel: GitHub. Research date 2026-11-06. Data: our GitHub repo data card + GitHub API (live as of 2026-11-06) + web pages from Jina/Brave search.

### One line

A single C++ injected DLL mod that "tricks" NVIDIA's DLSS multi frame generation (MFG, 3x–6x), which NVIDIA reserved for RTX 50, into running on RTX 40 (later expanded to 30/20) using NVIDIA's own code. Later it added DLSS preset hot-switching, XeSS multi frame generation (works on AMD and Intel cards too), and DLSS 5. The author, dashdogy, is a university student who only accepts Ko-fi tips.

### Verdict

It took off from a platform event plus the product itself. In late August 2026, the DLSS 5 DLL leaked with the NBA 2K27 early build, and a crowd of modders began unlocking RTX 50-exclusive features on older cards. The PC hardware community was highly charged over whether NVIDIA was deliberately locking features. dashdogy was the first to ship an RTX 40 MFG unlock that is **universal** (not tied to a single game), **goes through NVIDIA's native DLSS-G pipeline** (not a substitute like FSR or Lossless Scaling), and **also fixes frame pacing** . NVIDIA blocked it with an OTA update to the app, and it was reopened within hours, which became news in itself. Afterward Tom's Hardware, Wccftech, igor'sLAB, OC3D and other hardware outlets wrote up each version, and with Reddit r/nvidia, r/pcmasterrace and YouTube tutorials, the stars and downloads followed. Stars are a byproduct. The real usage metric is Releases downloads, roughly 577k in total.

### Data

- Stars: repo created 2026-08-29 (originally dashdogy/RTX40MFG-Unlock, later renamed); data card 11-06 is 1,985, GitHub API live the same day 2,050; forks 54; open issues 22.

- Recent momentum (data card, GitHub repo): 10-17 is +1,369,7 over 202 days (+7 over the prior 162 days), and 11-06 single day +115, the largest single-day gain we've logged for this repo.

- Releases downloads (GitHub API, 2026-11-06): 20 releases total **576,987** downloads. Major releases: v1.3.3-hotfix.2 (09-18) 73,914; v1.6.1 (10-20) 63,924; v1.5.0-hotfix.1 (10-15) 54,403; v1.7.0 (10-25) 112,857. 20 releases shipped in two months.

- Stars and downloads don't line up (downloads / stars ≈ 280:1): most users are players who just want to grab the DLL and use it, without logging into GitHub or starring.

### Timeline and growth levers (with evidence)

1. **Platform event (late August)** : the DLSS 5 DLL showed up in the NBA 2K27 early build, and modder Uncle Burrito ported DLSS 5 NR to Ada (RTX 40) in under a day. NVIDIA then said DLSS 5 would officially support RTX 40, and the scene became more convinced that "MFG is only for the 50 series" was a marketing lock. (Tom's Hardware 10-12 interview [Meet the modders porting ringfenced DLSS features](https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-components/gpus/meet-the-modders-porting-ringfenced-dlss-features-to-older-gpus-how-dlss-5-and-multi-frame-generation-were-unlocked-for-older-architectures); OC3D 09-08 [coverage](https://overclock3d.net/news/gpu-displays/mod-unlocks-dlss-multi-frame-generation-mfg-on-rtx-40-series-gpus/))

2. **Reddit launch** : first came the Cyberpunk-specific build on r/nvidia, "[DLSS MFG working on Ada](https://www.reddit.com/r/nvidia/comments/1w3ycdy/dlss_mfg_working_on_ada/)", then the universal V1.2, "[DLSS Multi Frame Generation On 40 Series For Any Game!](https://www.reddit.com/r/nvidia/comments/1w6w23x/dlss_multi_frame_generation_on_40_series_for_any/)". The author also posted the same thread to vertical communities like the [Microsoft Flight Simulator forum](https://forums.flightsimulator.com/t/dlss-multi-frame-generation-on-40-series-for-any-game/775602). Later versions were still posted back to r/nvidia ([V1.6 preset hot-switching](https://www.reddit.com/r/nvidia/comments/1x9y2mq/live_dlss_preset_switching_mfg_unlocker_v16/)), and r/DLSS, r/pcgaming and r/pcmasterrace all had discussion. Post scores were not retrieved (Reddit's API blocked the request), **unverified** .

3. **"NVIDIA blocked it, modders unlocked it again within hours" became news (09-04)** : Tom's Hardware ran [Nvidia app update fails to block unofficial DLSS MFG mod](https://www.tomshardware.com/video-games/pc-gaming/nvidia-app-update-fails-to-block-unofficial-dlss-multi-frame-generation-on-rtx-40-series-modders-restore-support-across-multiple-games-within-hours); NeoGAF and r/gpu and r/TechHardware headlines all followed the "Modders discover unlock ... NVIDIA blocks it, modders immediately unlock it again" framing. This cat-and-mouse story is the kind PC enthusiasts love to share.

4. **Hands-on validation from media (09-12)** : Tom's Hardware ran [We tested ... and it really works](https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-components/gpus/we-tested-dlss-multi-frame-generation-on-rtx-40-series-gpus-new-mod-brings-rtx-50-series-exclusive-feature-to-older-cards-and-it-really-works) on Cyberpunk 2077, linking directly to dashdogy's GitHub; [igor'sLAB](https://www.igorslab.de/en/dlss-multi-frame-generation-rtx-40-modders-unlock-3x-4x-5x-6x/) also tested 4090.

5. **Covered version by version (October)** : Wccftech wrote up each major version, with headlines using the product name directly ([1.5.0](https://wccftech.com/universal-mfg-unlocker-1-5-0-brings-faster-dlss-preset-c-to-rtx-40-30-gpus-adds-xess-multi-frame-generation-support-for-amd-intel-gpus/), [1.6.1 "increasingly popular"](https://wccftech.com/universal-mfg-unlocker-1-6-1-brings-real-time-dlss-preset-switching-to-all-rtx-gpus/), [How-to tutorial](https://wccftech.com/how-to/how-to-unlock-dlss-multi-frame-generation-on-rtx-40-rtx-30-rtx-20-gpus/)); Russian [ixbt.games](https://ixbt.games/en/news/2026/10/22/moddery-obosli-nvidia-vse-videokarty-rtx-polucili-udobnyi-perekliucatel-dlss.html), LiveJournal and Facebook GPU groups also shared it. The download curve lines up with these version milestones.

6. **YouTube tutorials** : multiple "How to use DLSS MFG on RTX 40" tutorials, such as [Llqj2N0Iuss](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Llqj2N0Iuss) and [EPhEd0e6KTs](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EPhEd0e6KTs). View counts **unverified** .

7. **Nexus Mods distribution** : there's a Cyberpunk 2077-specific package [mods/33286](https://www.nexusmods.com/cyberpunk2077/mods/33286); around 11-06 a universal page "[Universal MFG Unlocker at Modding Tools](https://www.nexusmods.com/site/mods/2551)" was newly opened (Brave shows it went live about 10 hours earlier), and NoobFeed published a [write-up](https://www.noobfeed.com/hardware/dlss-frame-generation-rtx-30-series-mods) the same day. **Speculation** : this is the source of the +115 single-day gain on 11-06. The timing overlaps, but there's no referral data.

8. **Integrated as a base layer by other tools** : the one-click tool [faisalkindi/DLSS5oneclick](https://github.com/faisalkindi/DLSS5oneclick) (1,277 stars) pulls the DLL straight from dashdogy's Release ([issue #138](https://github.com/faisalkindi/DLSS5oneclick/issues/138)), effectively redistributing it for them.

9. X: searching our x-radar corpus for "MFG Unlocker" / "dashdogy" returns 0 posts; scattered tweets are visible online (for example [this one](https://x.com/Sebasti66855537/status/2112636253535437157)), but no evidence of big X accounts driving it was found.

10. No ad buys and no paid promotion (it's a free mod).

### Why it took off

1. **Timing** : the DLSS 5 leak turned "can older cards use new features" into a hot topic. It was the first to ship a universal RTX 40 MFG solution in late August (media say at least three mods appeared around the same time, see TH 09-04).

2. **Hit the emotional nerve** : the claim that "NVIDIA deliberately locks features to sell new cards" already existed, and it provided a reproducible counterexample. Reddit had posts like "[Nvidia Lied About DLSS Frame Generation](https://www.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace/comments/1xok1no/nvidia_lied_about_dlss_frame_generation/)". The RTX 40 user base is huge, and getting more frames without buying a new card is a very direct need.

3. **The block actually helped it** : NVIDIA's OTA block was undone within hours, and that alone was the headline (TH 09-04, NeoGAF).

4. **Solid product** : it uses NVIDIA's own DLSS-G / Streamline code, not FSR / LSFG substitutes; the author says frame pacing fixes were the hardest part; it's a single DLL you rename and drop into the game folder, with the in-game menu opened by Backspace; 20 versions in two months, and the docs are complete (compatibility table, troubleshooting, log templates).

5. **Scope kept expanding** : RTX 40 → 30/20 → DLSS preset hot-switching → XeMFG (AMD and Intel can use it too) → DLSS 5. Each expansion earned another round of media coverage and widened the audience from RTX 40 owners to all PC gamers.

### Differentiation

Compared with the alternatives (Lossless Scaling, FSR3 frame generation hacks, Smooth Motion), it's **a real DLSS MFG** , and it's **general-purpose** , not tied to one game. Compared with the RTX 40 unlock mods that appeared around the same time (RenoDX / ReShade builds, DLSS Unlocked), it **came out first and is the original implementation** (others fork it or mix approaches). It's the simplest to install (a single DLL) and iterates fastest. That's the main reason it grew so much: the same wave of stars got split across several projects, the others were 1,000 or lower, while it sits at about 2,000 and has over 500K downloads. Also, the "original" status means media articles link to it, and one-click tools pull their DLL from it.

### Visibility

It's been widely discussed, but only in PC hardware and gaming circles: Tom's Hardware (at least 3 articles, including an interview), Wccftech (several), igor'sLAB, OC3D, ixbt and NoobFeed have all covered it. No revenue involved, only Ko-fi tips, amounts not public.

### Copycats

- MFGAdaUnlock-RenoDx (mavismmg, 1,020 stars); TH says it's based on dashdogy's logic. Others include ImDreamt/MFGAdaUnlock-RenoDx (77) and matiasLombo/mfg-unlock (69).

- Projects that wrap a GUI / manager around it: lashmanRB/MFG-Unlocker-GUI (10-24), Freedomwingss/MFG-Unlock-Manager (11-03), kraiggtr4sh/mfg_unlockedUI (11-03), jeffn3ro/MFG-Manager (11-05), ExiZz1/RenoDX-MFG-Unlocker (10-26). All have 0–3 stars.

- Per-game packages: Nexus has "MFG Unlock" packs for Phantom Blade Zero, KCD2 and others from game-specific sites.

### What to take from it

- "Unlocking features the vendor deliberately locked" is a natural spread topic on GitHub and in gamer communities. Each time the vendor patches it, another round of news follows, so being able to ship a fix quickly matters.

- Be the "general + original" one. When others fork you, wrap a GUI around you, or integrate you as a base layer, it all flows back to you.

- Post a Reddit thread per version with a clear changelog, and media will write articles per version; sites like Wccftech are almost just relaying the changelog.

- Main distribution is GitHub Releases, with Nexus Mods as a second entry point. Stars are a side effect; download counts are what matter.

### Uncertain

- Whether the +115 on 11-06 came from the Nexus general page is unclear; the timing just overlaps.

- Reddit post scores and YouTube view counts were not retrieved.

- Whether NVIDIA will fully block it at the driver or legal level (it already blocked it once via OTA update). If the official route brings MFG down to RTX 40, the project loses its reason to exist.

- Anti-cheat ban risk (issue #145) may limit where it can be used.

- The stargazers API returns 404, so the full daily star history is not available.
