# Written in a day, 26 days, 1100 stars: how the "free Figma" project desigma got passed around

**What it is** A native desktop design tool written in Rust that replicates Figma. It's free, works offline, can import .fig files, and includes an MCP interface so AI agents can edit files directly.

**Why it took off** It rode the 2026 October wave of "AI built a free Figma in one go." The title and README screenshots were easy to repost, and it was amplified in succession by automated GitHub trending accounts, Chinese X recommendation accounts, and the Product Hunt homepage.

**B** **How you could follow suit** Stop building Figma clones. Pick an expensive piece of software that nobody has made a "free native alternative" for yet, use an agent to replicate its core workflow to the point of being screenshot-worthy, turn the README into a poster, include MCP, and after launch proactively submit it to Chinese X GitHub recommendation accounts.

Grade B: the author had no fame and still got 1100 stars, which shows the approach is replicable. But the Figma slot was already taken by FigCraft (4× the stars) from two days earlier, and the "free X alternative" story is being used up quickly, so the window is measured in weeks. Circulating in small circles

2026 Oct, 11 early morning: a GitHub account with only 26 followers, deepfounder-ai, created a repo with a one-line description: "Free Figma alternative made on Rust." It made 131 commits that day, most attributed to Claude. 26 days later, this project named desigma had 1109 stars. It wasn't the first in this category, nor the biggest. It was second in its wave. Below: what it is, where the stars came from, who is bigger than it, and which steps you can copy if you want a project that gets stars too.

### A LinkedIn post: "Claude Code wrote a Figma"

The day after the repo was created, author Kir Leshkevich posted on LinkedIn: "Claude Code built Figma alternative on Rust. But it's 100% free and fast. Same features, same interface. Meet Desigma." He had 8000 followers on LinkedIn, and his previous most-starred GitHub repo had 69 stars.

The commit history matches what the post claimed: of roughly three hundred commits, about 281 carry `Co-Authored-By: Claude` (5.5 for Sonnet 175, 5.5 for Opus 91), and 13 more were written by Cursor. The Rust codebase is 6.6 MB, and over 3 weeks it went from alpha.1 to alpha.17,10-24, with 4 releases in one day at 10-25.

### What it actually is

A native desktop design tool that installs on Mac, Windows, and Linux. It's not Electron or web-based, requires no sign-up, and works offline. The feature list is itemized against Figma: components and variants, auto layout, prototyping, variables and light/dark modes, Dev Mode exporting CSS / Tailwind / SwiftUI / Compose / React code, whiteboarding, slides, keyframe animation, real-time collaboration, and direct import of `.fig` files. It also ships a local MCP server so AI agents can connect to the document you're editing and modify it directly.

The README works as a launch poster: the header is a 1600×900 banner, each feature has a 2× screenshot captured with the app's built-in `--screenshot` mode, and the status is labeled "early alpha".

Far fewer people actually installed it than looked at it. Across all releases it was downloaded 2086 times (GitHub, 11-06), with 108 downloads of the latest Mac installer and 99 for Windows. Most of the 111 forks are one-click-and-leave, with unchanged descriptions.

### Where the stars came from

| Timeline | What happened | star |
|---|---|---|
| 10-12 | The author posts on LinkedIn | — |
| 10-14 to 10-15 | Automated "GitHub trending" channels on YouTube and Instagram picked it up one after another: "Github Awesome — Trending Today #54" got 14.3k views and named it; an AI news site described it as "182 stars". | About 182 |
| 10-23 | The Chinese X account @GitHub_Daily introduced it in a post, 13.7k views. | Day +95, reaching 488 |
| 10-25 | English tweet from @ExiledonMoon: "One Figma Professional seat costs $16… this is $0" | +64 |
| 10-26 | The author posted it on Product Hunt himself, made the homepage, and got 115 votes that day | Day +68 |
| 10-28 | Biggest single-day jump: +177. No cause found; HN, Reddit and X have no matching posts | 831 |
| 11-03 | Covered by German design outlet Dr. Web | 950 |
| 11-05 | Chinese X account @dingyi posted "Three free design tools: Doop→Paper, Desigma→Figma, Orcanva→Canva", 10.9k views | Day +66, reaching 1109 |

(Star counts are daily snapshots; before 10-17 there is only one number from a news site.)

No Hacker News post, no Reddit discussion found, no sign of paid promotion. Traffic came from three places: automated trending-content accounts, a Chinese X GitHub-recommendation account, and the author's own LinkedIn and Product Hunt posts. The two Chinese tweets worked best, each adding roughly 60–100 stars the next day.

Slowing recently: +7 over the last 230 days, versus +7 over the first 486 days.

### Why this one

**Title.** "Free", "Figma alternative" and "Rust", the three most clickable terms, are packed into one line. Nearly every repost repeats that line, plus a comparison of $16 against $0.

**Rode a trend.** In Oct 1 Figma restricted MCP to whitelisted clients, which sparked 106 HN comments; Oct 9 FigCraft launched; Oct 12 someone on HN showed "Opus 5.5 built a Figma clone in three hours". "AI built a free Figma" was a story that spread that month. desigma's repo was created Oct 11, ships with MCP built in, and MCP is the feature reposters praised most.

**Looks complete.** AI has cut the cost of "full feature list" to a day. @GitHub_Daily's words: "Published only this month, and the feature set is already this complete."

**README ready to use.** Posters, screenshots and one-line pitches are all ready-made, so automated trend accounts, news sites and SEO aggregators pick them up as-is, which is why it spread so widely.

### Who's bigger

| Project | star | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| FigCraft | 4394 | Built 10-09 days earlier: nearly the same stack and features (Rust, tiny-skia, MCP, `.fig` import), with an API of 400 multi-command operations, WASM compilation, a Discord community, and the English X account posting about it |
| Penpot | 62k | Long-running open-source Figma alternative, web-based, with a company, team collaboration and self-hosting |
| Graphite | 28k | Also Rust, but a node-based 2D graphics tool, not aiming at Figma |
| open-pencil | 9634 | AI-native design editor written in TypeScript |
| ZSeven-W/openpencil | 7079 | AI-native vector tool written in Rust, competing with Pencil |
| Icons8 Lunacy | — | Commercial product, already free with a native desktop app |

(Star counts as 11-06.)

Compared with FigCraft, desigma's differentiation claims mostly don't hold. It has about a quarter of its rival's stars, roughly what a "second place in the same story" gets. The one who launched first and got pushed by the big accounts first pulled far ahead.

### Others are already following

The playbook has already spread from Figma to other tools: Doop targets Paper, Orcanva targets Canva (the other two from @dingyi's tweet), and AlternativeTo 10-30 featured a free InDesign alternative written in Rust. This lane is getting crowded, and it's happening week by week.

### If it were you

**B: worth trying, the path is clear, but the window is short and copycats keep coming.** The most notable thing about this project is that its author has little profile: 26 GitHub followers. A headline, a README that looks finished, and a few self-promoted posts got it 1100 stars in 26 days. All of that can be copied. The weak point is that FigCraft already holds the Figma position, and the "free X alternative" story is being used up fast.

**Who it suits:** developers who can produce large amounts of code with Claude Code / Codex and make a desktop app that looks good in screenshots. Ideally you know a pricey professional tool well, its workflows and shortcuts.

**Who it doesn't suit:** anyone building yet another open-source Figma (FigCraft and Penpot are ahead, so you'd be third at best); anyone counting on code quality or technical detail to earn stars (few of the people who reposted this actually installed it; they judged by headline and screenshots).

**How to do it:** don't build Figma. Find an expensive SaaS nobody has made a free native alternative to, or a piece of the Figma ecosystem nobody has done well. ① Write the description as a line like "Free <expensive software> alternative made in Rust", and have the price comparison ready. ② Use an agent to rebuild the core workflow and shortcuts of the target far enough to take screenshots, and make the README a launch poster: a header image, one real screenshot per feature, and an honest list of what's still missing. ③ Ship a local MCP so agents can read and edit files directly; this is the feature people praise most when big companies are tightening agent interfaces. ④ Release often; post every alpha to release aggregator sites.

**How to get users:** on launch day, post on LinkedIn / X yourself. Then pitch Chinese X GitHub-recommendation accounts (like @GitHub_Daily); this was the clearest conversion path for this project, with one post bringing close to 100 stars. Post on Product Hunt a week or two later. desigma skipped HN and Reddit, so you can add those for a channel it never used.

**When to do it:** the sooner the better, measured in weeks. The novelty of "AI built a free X" is fading. Once every mid-sized SaaS has a Rust clone, these headlines stop getting clicks.

**Signs you've misread it:** ① Over the next one or two months, most new "free X alternative (Rust)" projects stall at tens or a couple hundred stars, meaning the story is spent and desigma caught the tail end. ② A month later, desigma's and FigCraft's issues and downloads haven't grown, meaning this kind of project only collects spectator stars and builds no users or reputation, so it isn't worth weeks of your time. ③ A similar project keeps real users and gets discussed in designer circles (not developer circles), meaning the thing worth following is going deep on one area, not padding a feature list.

## Why desigma (deepfounder-ai/desigma) took off

> In one line: a native Rust "free Figma alternative" generated in a single day with Claude. It rode the wave of "AI clones Figma in one go" from 2026 October (Figma 10/01 tightened MCP, 10/09 FigCraft went viral, 10/12 an HN post "Opus 5.5 built Figma in three hours"). The title reads "Free Figma alternative made on Rust", and the README screenshots look like a finished product. First it was picked up by automated "GitHub trending" content accounts (YouTube, Instagram, AI news sites). Later a big Chinese X account, the Product Hunt homepage and German media each pushed it again, and it reached 1100 stars in 26 days. In the same wave it placed second; FigCraft, which came out two days earlier, has 4x its stars.

### 1. Basics

| items | Numbers | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Repo created | 2026-10-11 00:26 UTC | GitHub API |
| star / fork | 1109 / 111 (11-06 database); 1123 / 112 (GitHub API, 11-06 afternoon) | GitHub repo, GitHub API |
| last 7 days / previous 7 days | +230 / +486; biggest single day 10-28 +177 | Data card |
| Commits | First day (10-11) 131 10-12 78; author Kir 300 + Deep Founder 25; **about 281 commits carry `Co-Authored-By: Claude`** (Sonnet 5.5 175, Opus 5.5 91, Fable 5.1 12), plus 13 Cursor | GitHub commits API |
| Codebase size | Rust, about 6.6 MB | GitHub languages API |
| Releases | v0.1.0-alpha.1 (10-11) through alpha.17 (11-02), 17 releases over 3 weeks | GitHub releases |
| Downloads | All release assets combined: 2086 downloads; latest alpha.17: dmg 108, Windows installer 99, Windows zip 44, macOS tar 24, Linux 18 | GitHub releases API |
| Author | GitHub account deepfounder-ai ("Deep Founder", bio says Business intelligence, 26 followers), run by Kir Leshkevich (8070 LinkedIn followers); its earlier repos had at most 69 stars (castor) | GitHub API, LinkedIn |

1100 stars against roughly 2000 downloads means far more people looked than installed. The 111 forks are mostly one-click forks: Brave turns up a string of `<user>/desigma` forks with the descriptions unchanged, which doesn't look like real development.

### 2. Competitors: who else does the same thing

| Product | Form | Launched | Scale | Compared with desigma |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| **storytold/FigCraft** | Open source, pure Rust + egui + tiny-skia | 2026-10-09 | 4394 stars (11-06 repo), 10-14 to 10-18 gained 500–600 in one day | **The most direct rival** , launched a couple of days earlier, with nearly the same stack (tiny-skia, egui, MCP, boards, Dev Mode, `.fig` import) and the same framing ("clean-room reimplementation", "Familiar by design"). It has a command registry with 400+ commands, compiles to WASM, and has an ArtCraft Discord community. 10-24 was pushed by X's big account @RoundtableSpace (Mario Nawfal) (59.8k views). desigma has about a quarter of its stars |
| Penpot | Open source, web (Clojure) | From ¥2015 | 62137 star | An established open-source Figma alternative with a company, self-hosting, and team collaboration. desigma is pitching "native desktop, offline, no account" |
| Graphite | Open source, Rust | 2020 | 27843 star | Also Rust, but a node-based 2D graphics/vector tool, not interface design |
| open-pencil/open-pencil | Open-source TS | 2026-02-27 | 9634 star | Pitches itself as an "AI-native design editor, open-source Figma alternative". desigma feels more like a feature-by-feature copy of Figma's workflow |
| ZSeven-W/openpencil | Open source Rust | 2026-02-17 | 7079 star | AI-native vector design with agent teams; its benchmark is Pencil |
| Tidy Design | Web | PH 2026-10-16 | PH 69 votes | Open-source Paper / Figma alternative, launched on PH the same week |
| Figmaboy | Tauri app | HN 2026-07-15 | HN 3 points | Figma clone plus MCP CLI, didn't catch on |
| "Opus 5.5 built a Figma clone in three hours" (mana.space) | Web demo | HN 2026-10-12 | HN 40 points / 44 comments | Same genre of "AI builds Figma in one shot" demos |
| Figma itself (free Starter tier), and Icons8 Lunacy (free native desktop) | Commercial | Already around | Very large | "Free + native" was already done by Lunacy. desigma's extras are open source, reading `.fig`, and built-in MCP |

Bottom line: **this space is not short on builders** . In 2026 alone, several open-source Figma alternatives launched at once, and in October a wave of AI-generated Rust versions piled in. desigma wasn't the first and isn't the biggest. It's #2 in that same wave.

**HN** : our hackernews library and Algolia have no desigma posts (FigCraft has none either). **Reddit** : Brave and Exa found no discussion threads. **Paid promotion** : none seen.

### 4. Why it took off

1. **A one-line title that hits the need** : "Free Figma alternative made on Rust" packed three of the strongest click-driving words, "Figma is paid", "Rust native", and "free", into the GitHub description. Nearly every reshare repeated that line, plus the price comparison "Figma Professional $16/seat vs $0" (@ExiledonMoon).

2. **Timing: AI cloning Figma became a topic that same month** . Figma 10-01 restricted MCP to allowlisted clients (HN 189 points / 106 comments), and developers were looking for a design tool that agents can read and edit directly. 10-09 FigCraft appeared, and from 10-14 to 10-18 it gained 500–600 stars in a day. 10-12 On HN there was "Opus 5.5 built a Figma clone in three hours". desigma was created 10-11, right at the peak of this wave, and it ships with an MCP server (16 tools, can connect to the document being edited, and shares undo history with the human). The Chinese-language account @RealYDT and the English-language @szchan111 both praised exactly this.

3. **AI-generated code cut the cost of "looking feature-complete" to one day** : 131 commits on day one, about 281 of them credited to Claude. The README lists component variants, prototyping, variables, Dev Mode code output, whiteboard, slides, animation, real-time collaboration, and `.fig` import in one go, each paired with a 2x screenshot the app took itself via its `--screenshot` mode. A reshare put it plainly: "the project was open-sourced only this month, and the features are already this complete" (@GitHub_Daily).

4. **The README and marketing folder were distribution material in themselves** : the repo has `marketing/` (1600×900 launch banners, etc.), and the README header is the launch poster. Automated trending accounts, AI news sites (Reveneau states it is "written by an AI system based on source links"), and SEO aggregators (devs7ud.io, repoquarry, productwatch, qwyd, indie-machine…) could use it as-is, which is why it got reposted so widely.

5. **The author pushed it several rounds on their own** : LinkedIn (10-12,8000 followers), a self-posted Product Hunt launch (10-26 reaching the homepage), and a dense release cadence (3 alphas in 17 weeks, 10-24 to 10-25 with 4 releases in one day), each keeping it visible on sites like newreleases.

6. **Chinese X was the clearest amplifier** : @GitHub_Daily (10-23) and @dingyi (11-05) each posted once, and the repo gained another 66–95 stars the next day; @RealYDT also wrote about it. English X had only mid-size and small accounts.

### 5. What's the differentiation, and is it why it broke out?

- Its own stated differentiators: a native Rust desktop app (not Electron or web), offline, no account needed, can import Figma REST JSON and `.fig` files, Dev Mode code output in CSS/Tailwind/SwiftUI/Compose/React, a local MCP, free, dual MIT/Apache licensed.

- But **compared with FigCraft from the same period, almost none of these are real differentiators** : the stack, feature list, and framing overlap heavily, and FigCraft is more complete on the command API, WASM, and community. Against Penpot, the difference is "native + offline + reads `.fig`"; against Lunacy, it's open source + MCP.

- So desigma got traction through **category and timing, not differentiation** : the story "a free Figma, built by AI" travelled easily at the time, and whoever put up a decent README first got picked up by trending accounts. desigma's reach is about a quarter of FigCraft's, which fits the position of "second place in the same story".

### 6. How many people have seen it / is anyone copying it

- **Visibility: circulating in a small circle** . Two big Chinese X accounts (roughly 1.1–14k views each), a PH homepage feature with 124 votes, one German design outlet, and a pile of automated trending accounts and SEO sites wrote about it. It wasn't on HN, I saw nothing on Reddit, and no big English X account pushed it (the big accounts pushed FigCraft). The project doesn't earn money; the author's homepage deepfounder.ai is a BI company, so it looks like the project is being used as personal branding / top-of-funnel for the company (inference, not verified).

- **Copycats** : this path is already crowded. FigCraft (4.4k stars, earlier) and Tidy Design (10-16 on PH) appeared in the same period. The same playbook (AI-generated + Rust native + "free alternative to X") has spread to other tools: "Doop → Paper", "Orcanva → Canva" (@dingyi 11-05), plus a "free InDesign alternative written in Rust" that @AlternativeTo 10-30 reshared.

### 7. What others can borrow

- **Titles like "free alternative to <expensive SaaS> + built in Rust / native"** , paired with a feature-complete surface that AI can generate in a day, plus a README that looks like a finished product (header poster, app-generated screenshots, and an honest list of what's still missing), were enough in 2026 year to get picked up by automated trending accounts without any paid spend.

- **Built-in MCP / agent interface** was the most praised point in this wave, especially useful as big companies tightened agent access (Figma restricting MCP to 10-01).

- **Chinese X GitHub recommendation accounts** (GitHub_Daily, dingyi) convert clearly: each post added dozens to hundreds of stars the next day, so proactively pitching them is worth it.

- But **the first-mover advantage in this wave was short-lived** : FigCraft launched a couple of days earlier and has 4 times desigma's stars. For the same story, who launches first and who gets pushed by big accounts makes a big difference.

### 8. Still unclear

- What drove the jump of +177 on 10-28 was not found (no matching posts on HN, Reddit, or X).

- Early star curve from 10-11 to 10-17: our library only started recording from 10-17; the GitHub stargazers endpoint returned 404 for this repo, so I can only rely on Reveneau's "10-15 182 stars".

- Whether it made GitHub Trending: "Github Awesome — Trending Today #54" named it, but our trending records show 0 (data card trending_days_any=0; our library only collects repos older than about 60 days).
