DeepSeek Harness, 270k stars: build plugins for it, don't build another one

What it is DeepSeek's official open-source agent tool. It's in the same class as Claude Code and Codex, and its pitch is "everything is a plugin": even the main loop can be swapped out.

Why it took off It launched the same day as V4-Pro and gained 200k stars in half a month. After that it kept climbing on word of mouth as a "cheap Claude Code alternative", plus a wave of Chinese plugins and the "raising whale girl" craze.

BHow you could get in Stop building another harness. Go build a plugin or client the ecosystem still lacks: the fish-raising use case nobody has covered yet, a new platform like iOS, or a desktop pet or bot bridge that works across several agent tools.

Grade B: the main repo itself is hard to beat. It runs on DeepSeek's brand and the traffic from model launches. The plugin circle around it still gains about 96k stars a week, and the fish-raising and new-platform niches still have room. But of the 207 peripheral projects created in the last 30 days, only 7 have passed a thousand stars, with a median of 52 stars, and official updates often break compatibility, so you have to pick your spot carefully. DeepSeek open-sourced its own agent tool in Aug 13, DeepSeek Harness (CLI: dsh). In 85 days it picked up 274k stars, passing Claude Code, Codex and OpenCode, and it's still gaining over a thousand a day more than two months later. Most of those stars come from the DeepSeek brand, which followers can't copy; what's up for grabs is the plugin ecosystem around it. Below: how it took off, how crowded the plugin scene is now, and where a developer chasing stars should start.

A fish that calls you "Daddy"

On Oct 30, Kazuki, the WeChat Official Account author, posted a long piece on X titled "The End of DeepSeek Is a Blue Fat Fish That Calls You Daddy." "Blue Fat Fish" is what netizens nicknamed DeepSeek's whale logo. It was later remixed into Whale Girl: blue hair, a whale tail, a love of plain rice, and a need for Tokens to get work done. The article says netizens used the DeepSeek Harness plus a few plugins (a QQ bot, desktop pets, Bilibili scrolling) to "raise" her inside their chat lists. One person's fish drew two blue fish, one big and one small, and said, "Look, Daddy, the big one is you, the small one is me." Another let the fish loose to browse Bilibili, and "more and more Whale Girls started flooding into Bilibili comment sections." The author called it the "Blue Fat Fish Locust Plague."

That week, DeepSeek Harness gained stars 21% faster than the week before (7 in the last 7,988 days vs. 7 in the prior 6,598 days, daily GitHub stars, 11-06). For a coding agent tool two and a half months after launch, that acceleration came from a group of young people raising fish.

What it is

It's in the same class as Claude Code and Codex. It lets a large model write code, edit documents, process spreadsheets and run scheduled tasks on your computer. It has a web UI and a desktop app, is written in TypeScript, and is MIT licensed. Its own pitch is "everything is a plugin": rivals have a fixed core with extensions bolted on, while it lets you swap the agent main loop, the model interface and the tool table. Plugins can be installed and removed at runtime, and removing one automatically reverts the changes it made. There's also a Creator mode: you describe a plugin in chat, and the agent writes it and installs it. The underlying framework, Cordis, comes from Koishi, a QQ bot framework that has been around for several years, and there are over 4,000 community plugins.

How the stars came: brand-driven for the first two weeks

It gained about 200k in the first 16 days. It launched the same day as the flagship model V4-Pro, and the V4-Pro tweet got about 3.04M views. It was #1 on Hacker News that day with 747 points. A top HN comment asked "what even is this, the README is nearly empty," which suggests many people starred it before understanding it. After that, every new DeepSeek model launch brought it another wave of people.

Word of mouth then centered on cost. A third-party benchmark (FrontierHarness) ran nine agent tools on the same model. Claude Code and this tool both solved 19 tasks, at $18.34 vs. $3.28 per task. An X post reading "same task, Claude Code cost $150, DeepSeek Harness cost $2" got 2.22M views.

Latecomers can't copy these two drivers: you don't have a brand with millions of followers that makes news every time a model ships.

The next two months ran on the plugin ecosystem

What kept it growing two months later is the peripheral ecosystem that "everything is a plugin" produced. The README asks people to tag plugins dsh-plugin, and plugin authors who want their own stars end up promoting the main repo. 11-06 peripheral projects I could count (GitHub, 11-06):

Tencent has released an official QQ bot plugin, and WeCom has also announced support. On V2EX, Zhihu and Bilibili there are posts and tutorials such as "270 curated plugins" and "understand it in 50 minutes."

Is it still worth getting in now?

First, the whole circle. Roughly 980 projects have DeepSeek Harness peripherals in their name or description, totaling 1.45M stars. In the last week the circle as a whole still gained about 96k stars. Of these, 92 have passed a thousand stars and 516 have passed a hundred (GitHub, 11-06, estimated by counting tags and descriptions).

Now the later entrants:

Repo createdProjectsOver 100 starsOver 1,000 starsMedian stars
AllAbout 98051692104
Last 30 days20758752
Last 14 days80231(dsh-Go)About 50

The earliest slots, "desktop app," "plugin marketplace," "awesome list" and "TUI," were claimed in the first week of August, and each has one or two repos with over ten thousand stars. Of the projects created in the last 30 days, half can't reach 52 stars, and only 7 are over a thousand. But in the last two weeks a project like dsh-Go reached eleven thousand stars in 12 days. It took a spot early on that nobody had done well: mobile.

Newer projects still gaining are mostly about fish-raising: dsh-bili-scroll, which scrolls Bilibili and writes daily reports (1,255 stars in 23 days); dsh-bili-whale, which "installs a fish with a life for DSH" (930 stars in 20 days); and dsh-aurabot-qq, which lets the big fat fish live in QQ (417 stars in 13 days).

There are also minus points. It's still in developer preview and often ships breaking updates. On V2EX someone said "a pile of plugins will break soon," and there are already community forks that say "upstream has stopped maintenance, so we'll keep it running here." On X and HN you can find people who switched to Hermes after using it for a while, and others worried that the desktop version has telemetry on by default and sends data to China. Whether fish-raising is a passing fad is unclear right now.

If it were you

In one line: don't build another harness. Build a plugin or client for it, and pick a spot it hasn't covered well. The fish-raising line and new-platform clients still have room. Desktop apps, plugin marketplaces and jailbreak plugins are already packed.

  • Who it's for: indie developers who know TypeScript and the Chinese communities (Bilibili, QQ, Xiaohongshu), who want an open-source project that can get a few hundred to a few thousand stars within weeks. Ideally you're raising fish yourself, so you know what players are missing.
  • Who it's not for: anyone who wants to build a direct competitor agent tool (Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode and Hermes all have over 100k stars, and they rely on a brand you don't have); anyone who wants to build a desktop shell, plugin marketplace, awesome list or jailbreak plugin (each has an old project with over ten thousand stars, and jailbreak plugins carry legal and platform-review risk); anyone who wants to make money from it (this category rewards stars and visibility).
  • How to do it: three directions, ranked from most to least confident. (1) The unfilled link in fish-raising: let the fish live somewhere nobody has covered yet (Douyin, Xiaohongshu, Weibo, Discord), or add memory, mood and growth to the fish and make it something people can screenshot and share on its own. (2) New platform clients: dsh-Go only covers Android, so iOS, watches, car systems and browser extensions are still open (inference). (3) Carry its best parts elsewhere: build a desktop pet or bot bridge like petdex that works with Claude Code, Codex and Hermes, so you pick up people from several circles.
  • How to get users: tag your repo dsh-plugin as the README asks, and submit it to awesome-dsh-plugin and dsh-market for inclusion. Put a whale-girl GIF or screen recording at the top of the README (dsh-Go's top section is exactly a whale girl typing code). Post on Bilibili and QQ groups, not just HN. On days when DeepSeek ships a new model the circle is busiest, so have your project ready and launch on those days.
  • Timing: the fish-raising trend took off in late October, so launch before late November. Traffic peaks in the days right after a new model launch, so stay ready.
  • Signs you've read it wrong: (1) DeepSeek Harness's daily star gains fall to a few hundred and keep declining for two weeks, meaning the circle is receding and peripheral projects will only get harder. (2) Among the peripheral projects created in the last 30 days, only a few ever pass a thousand stars, meaning the good spots are already taken. (3) Official releases build desktop pets, QQ bots or mobile apps in as built-in features, and the third-party spots in those areas disappear.

Why DeepSeek Harness (deepseek-ai/deepseek-harness) took off

Source: GitHub | created 2026-08-13 | 2026-11-06 stars 273,693, forks 33,394 (github repo_profile) | research date 2026-11-06

One line

An agent harness officially open-sourced by DeepSeek (command dsh, TypeScript, MIT), in the same category as Claude Code / Codex / OpenCode: it has a Web UI and a desktop app, and can write code, handle documents and spreadsheets, and run scheduled tasks. Its pitch is "everything is a plugin": even the agent main loop can be swapped, and underneath it is the Cordis framework from a paper co-written by Peking University and DeepSeek. Its 270k stars rest mainly on three things: DeepSeek's brand and a new model released the same day, a Chinese plugin ecosystem that grew on its own, and the October meme in China about "raising the big blue fish" that pushed it out of developer circles. The architectural differentiation is real, but its main role is telling a story and growing the plugin ecosystem, not a reason people come to it at first glance.

1. How the stars grew (data)

  • Growth came in two phases: the first 16 days added about 200k (over 10k a day on average), a burst around launch; since then it has held steady at 700–1,500 stars a day, averaging about 1,200 a day in September.
  • Last week grew 21% faster than the week before, going from 11-03 to 11-05 a day, 1,200–1,500. Two events line up: 10-31 the official open-sourcing of dsh-superagent-prototype (6 days since creation, already 19,411 stars), and the October-end "fish raising" craze in China (see below).
  • Single-day peak 1,503 (10-19; the repo only has day-by-day data from 10-09 onward, so single-day numbers for the August launch days are missing).
  • The repo shows no sign of star-botting (suspect is empty); forks/stars 12.2%, about the same as the median for new repos of similar size (about 11%).
  • It has never entered GitHub Trending. The github repo notes say Trending only includes repos about 60 days old, and deepseek-ai's new repo was kept out for that reason too, so this proves nothing.

2. Competitive landscape (github repo 2026-11-06 stars)

ProductFormLaunchedScaleHow DSH differs
Claude Code(anthropics/claude-code)Open-source CLI / big tech2025-02154,654 starsFixed main loop, extensible only at the edges (DataCamp comparison); defaults to expensive frontier models; FrontierHarness tested them on the same model, and both DSH Creator and Claude Code passed 19 tasks, at $18.34 vs $3.28 per successful task

Koishi(koishijs/koishi)Open-source chatbot framework20196,318 stars, 4,000+ community pluginsRuns on the same Cordis, its original base; the QQ bot ecosystem came from here

Conclusion: This track is far from empty; Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, and Hermes are all long-established rivals with over 100k stars. DSH passed Claude Code, Codex, and OpenCode within 85 days of creation. Product strength alone doesn't explain that; brand and ecosystem did most of the work.

3. Growth tactics (evidence)

  1. Released the same day as a flagship model, with official accounts driving traffic: 2026-08-13 @deepseek_ai posted DeepSeek-V4-Pro (about 3.04M views, x.com/deepseek_ai/status/2087864585504305397), and the same day posted a tweet about Harness (someone on HN shared twitter.com/deepseek_ai/status/2087887408440164663). MindStudio wrote "launched Aug 13 together with V4 Pro." Later, V4-Flash-Vision-Exp (2.72M views), and when V4.1-Flash launched on 9-10, Harness's Team Mode was promoted alongside it; every model launch brought a fresh wave of people to Harness.
  2. No. 1 on HN that day: "DeepSeek Harness developer preview" got 747 points and 314 comments (2026-08-13); 10-02 the desktop version hit again, with 417 points and 228 comments. The author answered questions in the comments.
  3. X's AI accounts and developers passing it around organically: @omarsar0 (320k followers) twice praised it as "engineering at its finest / 202K stars"; @Xianbao_QIAN said "almost the dream harness"; @quxiaoyin wrote "same task: Claude Code spent $150, the DeepSeek harness spent $2" (2.22M views, x.com/quxiaoyin/status/2091906740409553036); @MaziyarPanahi wrote that after running out of Codex quota they switched to DSH.
  4. Cheapness became the talking point: FrontierHarness Eval tested 9 harnesses on the same model, Kimi K3; Claude Code and DSH Creator both passed 19 tasks, at $18.34 vs $3.28 per task (https://runta.com/blog/introducing-frontierharness-eval/; there was a Show HN). On YouTube there are titles like "DeepSeek Harness = Claude Code for $0."
  5. Chinese developer communities: V2EX ran many posts (technical breakdowns, official news roundups, "270 handpicked plugins"); Zhihu, the Tencent Cloud developer community, CSDN, and Bilibili have tutorials like "Fully understand DSH in 50 minutes"; there is an official WeChat Official Account, "deepseek harness team," and the Chinese README has a community sign-up.
  6. The plugin ecosystem feeds traffic back to the main repo: the README tells people to tag plugin repos with dsh-plugin. There are many related repos on GitHub, such as awesome-dsh-plugin with 22,627 stars, the dsh-market plugin marketplace with 10,983 stars, the third-party desktop client anywhere-labs/dsh-desktop with 34,994 stars, dsh-Go mobile client with 11,336 stars (created 12 days ago), dsh-our-free-model "free unlimited model" with 62,222 stars, and several "jailbreak" plugins (HunYiSage/dsh-purge with 19,078 stars). WeCom also officially announced DSH integration (@Weixin_WeChat, 170k views).
  7. The October "raising the big blue fish" went viral: "Big blue fish" was netizens' nickname for DeepSeek's whale logo, which was later remixed into "Whale Girl." Users raised her in QQ, WeChat, Feishu, Bilibili, and Douyin using DSH with desktop pet plugins and the QQ bot plugin (@tencent-connect/dsh-qqbot). Khazix said "the fish disaster on Bilibili," and Xiaohongshu and Bilibili even saw fish-raising tutorials and paid fish-sitting services appear (https://x.com/Khazix0918/status/2116021601661841549, 2026-10-30; tutorial x.com/Khazix0918/status/2117469879787982932, 11-03). This wave lines up with last week's acceleration.
  8. Where the money comes back: the desktop version requires login and a top-up before use (per Khazix's tutorial screenshots), and it draws on DeepSeek API balance. For DeepSeek, Harness is an entry point that brings API usage; the FT reported DeepSeek's ARR at about $500M (relayed by @jukan05).

No paid ads found. The website and the Reddit post bodies were blocked by 403, so only titles and summaries were visible (the r/LocalLLaMA launch post, and critical r/DeepSeek threads saying "everything is a plugin" sounds good but works differently in practice).

IV. Why it took off

  1. Brand and timing: DeepSeek has 1.13M followers on X, and every model release is news across the web; Harness launched the same day as V4-Pro and caught the biggest wave of traffic, reaching 33k stars within hours and 173k within a week.
  2. "A cheap Claude Code alternative": the same task at $150 vs $2, with per-task cost 5.6× lower; comparisons like this spread on X to millions of views, and they came just as Codex quotas were running short and Gemini CLI was tightening its free service (the latter unverified).
  3. The plugin ecosystem grew on its own: Cordis inherited Koishi's four years and 4,000+ plugins from the QQ bot ecosystem, and Chinese developers treat DSH as a new platform for "bots + desktop pets + office work"; plugin makers in turn promote the main repo to boost their own stars.
  4. Breaking into the mainstream: "Fish raising" turned DSH from a developer tool into a toy for young people in China, something not seen among comparable harnesses.
  5. Engineering and academic credibility: there is a 88-page paper, a Peking University collaboration, and formal proofs, and tech bloggers are willing to write deep breakdowns (DataCamp, MindStudio, dev.to, habr, Medium series), giving readers a reason to bookmark it.

5. Differentiation

  • Architecture: rivals use a fixed core plus extensions, DSH has no core at all, just plugins. The model adapter, tool registry, session log and agent loop can all be swapped, uninstalling a plugin automatically reverts its side effects, and plugins can be hot-swapped while running. On top of that it ships Creator Mode: describe a plugin in chat and the agent writes it, installs it and verifies it. Mashable wrote about this specifically (sticky-note walls, poster tools, a Minecraft-style mini game). There is also an append-only session log and Trajectory replay, which someone on HN called a killer feature.
  • Is that why it blew up? Only partly. The first two weeks of 200k stars came mostly from the brand and launch timing. The top HN comment asks "what even is this, the README is nearly empty," which suggests many people starred it before understanding it. The differentiation really kicked in during phase two: plugins became hot-swappable and generated through conversation, so a plugin ecosystem and "raise a fish" type uses could grow, and stars kept accelerating two months later. There is pushback too: on HN some say "plugin fatigue" and others worry about "data going to China" and the desktop build enabling telemetry by default; on V2EX someone says "lots of plugins are about to break, don't make it your main tool yet"; on X one account ranks it B-tier, and others switched back to Hermes after using it.

6. Visibility and copycats

  • Already widely discussed: #1 on HN (747 points), and covered by Mashable, The New Stack, DataCamp, MindStudio and DeepInfra. X accounts with hundreds of thousands of followers have reviewed it. It is not an undiscovered opportunity.
  • Lots of copycats: unofficial desktop shells (anywhere-labs/dsh-desktop 35k stars, dataelement/dsh-desktop 17k, dsh-tauri), a mobile client dsh-Go, a plugin marketplace dsh-market, several awesome lists, and at least three plugins with the same name, a knockoff of the 破甲 plugin (HunYiSage, kingcharleslzy-ai, mmparko, the last flagged for a "new account, single repo, sudden spike"), plus "one API for every harness" services like OpenRouter's "Ori Harness" and agentsky.

7. What's worth borrowing

  • The vendor's own harness shipped the same day as its flagship model, so "new model + new tools" made the news together.
  • Turn the underlying framework into a platform so plugin authors get their own stars and traffic, and the ecosystem feeds traffic back to the main repo. Use one topic in the README to gather everyone.
  • "Same task, cost comparison" is the easiest kind of content to spread.
  • Give the memorable brand mascot (the whale girl) somewhere fun to show up, like desktop pets or QQ bot plugins, and a developer tool can reach a mainstream audience.
  • For a small team, what you can borrow is building within the DSH ecosystem: plugins, desktop apps, mobile clients, tutorials (dsh-Go 12 days 11k stars, dsh-our-free-model 60k stars). Not another harness.

VIII. Unknowns

  • Daily star counts and source breakdown for mid-August (GitHub doesn't provide history; the database only has two wayback snapshots).
  • Real usage: npm download numbers and desktop install counts were not checked. Claims that it has many stars but no real users exist, but can't be quantified.
  • How much extra growth the "raise a fish" craze brought can only be matched by timing, not separated out.
  • The model sources and compliance behind plugins like dsh-our-free-model ("unlimited free frontier models") were not verified.
  • Reddit post bodies could not be retrieved.
