A long essay with a prototype repo, 6 days, 19k stars: DeepSeek's Super-agent, and the small piece you can actually follow
What it is A research prototype released by DeepSeek: an AI coding assistant that watches a GitHub repo. When someone @-mentions it with a request, it works on it itself and submits a PR. It can only run on DeepSeek's own agent platform.
Why it caught on The DeepSeek brand, plus a long essay arguing that the bottleneck is human attention, not the model, and a set of memorable speed-up numbers. Then third parties like Polymarket and Tencent News framed it as "rivaling Claude Code," and it spread through developer circles.
CHow you could follow it Don't build another always-on coding agent to chase stars. Within two weeks, make a lightweight version of its Router/Worker design, with its "speak less" principle, that installs directly on Claude Code or Codex, or build just one of its pieces alone. At launch, copy its approach: a long essay plus companion code and before/after numbers.

On Nov 1 at about 7:30 pm, DeepSeek Harness's official X account posted a long English essay titled "Exploring Super-agent Design: Towards a More Autonomous Agent System," which got 3.28M views and 13.7k likes. Attached to the post was a GitHub repo created the day before, deepseek-ai/dsh-superagent-prototype. The first line of its README reads: "Research prototype for reference only, not an official DeepSeek product." This repo, which calls itself "for reference only," went from zero to 19k stars in 6 days. Below: what it is, where the stars came from, who is building the same thing, and which piece is still open if you want to earn stars with a similar project.
What it is: an agent that lives in a repo and submits PRs when @-mentioned
It is a plugin package on DeepSeek Harness (DSH, DeepSeek's own agent runtime platform). Once installed, it keeps watching a GitHub repo (optionally also a Feishu group). Anyone with permission @-mentions it with a request, it opens a ticket, works in an isolated session and directory, then reports back in the original conversation, for example by submitting a PR. There is also a web dashboard that only shows "what needs a human to handle."
The structure has two layers: a Router that only dispatches and does no work, and multiple Workers that execute concurrently in isolation. The essay gives a set of numbers that every outlet keeps quoting: p95 completion time drops from 29.5 minutes (single session plus sub-agents) to 15.7 minutes. With batched handling by the Router, the inference time per decision drops from 6.4 seconds to 1.6 seconds. The cost is more tokens.
The line most often quoted from the README is its principle: "take as little human attention as possible, and give as much value as possible." It acts only when asked, or when team-written rules allow it, and speaks only when a person must act or the result is useful.
The code itself is plain: about 15k lines of TypeScript, only 1 commits on main, no releases, and it depends on DSH's alpha version. The install guide SETUP.md is written for a coding agent to read. The README's install step is a single sentence: tell your coding agent "Read SETUP.md in this repository and set up dsh-superagent with me."
How the stars happened: a single news spike
| Date | star | Added that day | What happened |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10-31 | Repo created | — | The repo went public, the DSH team published a Chinese long essay, and Zhidongxi published the story that night, "DeepSeek open-sourced again! Super agent architecture revealed." |
| 11-01 | 1,988 | — | Sina Finance reposted it; the official X English essay got 3.28M views; Polymarket posted "China's DeepSeek launches 'Super-Agent'… to rival Anthropic's Claude Code," with 7,263 likes and 400k views. |
| 11-02 | 6,823 | +4,835 | Tencent News ran "DeepSeek open-sources Super-Agent code, aimed at Claude Code"; @omarsar0 called it a "masterclass in building a modern harness," with 145k views; the same official account posted Creator Mode that night and got 2.45M views. |
| 11-03 | 12,712 | +5,889 | Peak. MarkTechPost, DataCamp, Medium and YouTube explainers followed. |
| 11-04 | 16,410 | +3,698 | |
| 11-05 | 18,467 | +2,057 | |
| 11-06 | 19,411 | +944 | Has fallen to a sixth of the peak. Later that day the GitHub page showed 20k stars and 2.3k forks. |
(daily star counts are from daily scrapes, starting 11-01)
A few details are worth noting:
- Hacker News was not a source. 10-31 has two posts, with 8 and 5 points, zero comments, and neither reached the front page.
- The breakout came from third parties framing it. The official side only said "research prototype." Polymarket and Tencent News called it "China's DeepSeek rivaling Claude Code." In the Chinese-language community, @AYi_AInotes wrote a long comment (1,052 likes, 168k views); in English, @Hesamation posted a visual explainer (2,199 likes). A YouTube video, "DeepSeek's New SuperAgent Can Build an Autonomous AI Coding Team!", has 22.6k views.
- Big accounts mostly shared the essay, not the code. The fork/star ratio is about 11%, which is normal and shows no sign of star-buying. But the issues section is 0, there are no releases, and running it requires the DSH alpha plus a separate GitHub account. How many people actually ran it can't be determined (inference: very few).
- This is normal for DeepSeek. DeepInfer, built by the same org 10-16, peaked at +12,474 in a single day and hit 25k stars in three weeks. The deepseek-ai org has 757k stars combined. superagent isn't outperforming its sister repos.
So most of these 19k stars are readers bookmarking an important essay.
Why it took off
The brand. This is the biggest factor, and you can't get it.
A judgment that landed. The essay's core claim is that the bottleneck is human attention, not the model. Many people run three or five Claude Code or Codex sessions at once and keep switching windows to check progress, and this line said what they already felt.
A one-liner anyone can repeat. "p95 went from 29.5 minutes to 15.7 minutes", the phrasing every outlet is using in headlines and ledes.
A "rivals X" story, and third parties are telling it. The official side stays restrained while outsiders shout "takes aim at Claude Code", which makes it read as credible.
Two days of high exposure in a row. 11-01's long-form post and 11-02's Creator Mode post came from the same account, and 11-03's peak lands right on the aftershock of both (the split can't be separated).
Who else is building the same thing
Coding agents that live in GitHub or chat tools, take work when @-mentioned, and deliver a PR are already a crowded category:
| Project | Scale | How superagent differs |
|---|---|---|
| GitHub Copilot coding agent | GitHub built-in | Hosted, works out of the box; assign an issue to Copilot and go |
| OpenAI Codex (cloud, @codex in GitHub) | openai/codex 133k stars | Hosted; single-trigger runs, no persistent Router |
| anthropics/claude-code-action | 9.8k star | Single trigger, single run, no memory across tasks |
| OpenHands | 93k stars | General dev agent platform, can also take an issue and fix it |
| langchain-ai/open-swe | 11k stars | The closest open-source peer, an async cloud coding agent; built for over a year and has half of superagent's 6-day stars |
| cyrus (a Claude Code background agent wired to Linear, Slack, and GitHub) | 883 star | Almost the same shape, built for a year and a half, and almost nobody saw it |
| OpenClaw | 394k stars | Always-on, multi-channel personal assistant, not coding-specific; a forerunner of the "always-on" narrative |
| ByteDance DeerFlow | 85k stars | Also calls itself "SuperAgent", does long-running research and coding, not event-driven |
(star counts as of 11-06)
Copycats have already appeared: thefullgc/opensuperagent describes itself as an "open-source implementation of DeepSeek Super-agent", 48 stars; mitkox/copilot-superagent copied that exact tagline, 26 stars; saltapp made a Chinese doc, 20 stars. On X, someone is also making a video around the "Super Agent Whitepaper" and teasing a token launch.
The cyrus row says it best: same kind of thing, but without a brand or a long post, it has 883 stars after a year and a half; the name-riding copycats add a few dozen stars a week.
Where it falls short
- It only runs on DSH. People using Claude Code, Codex, or OpenCode who read the post and want to try it first have to switch platforms, and it's still alpha.
- It's heavy to install. It needs a separate GitHub account, tmux, and a chain of config, which is why it needs an agent to walk you through setup.
- Not everything in the post is in the code. The README says itself that parts of the article "are directions for future development and are not implemented in this prototype".
- No evidence anyone is actually using it. No releases, no issues, no user stories.
Taken together, these are the openings for a follower.
If it were you
Bottom line: trying to build another "always-on coding agent" to chase stars won't work; what you can follow is two small pieces: bring this design to tools people already use, or borrow its playbook of "long post + companion code" and apply it to your own project.
Who it fits: developers running several Claude Code or Codex sessions at once who have been worn down by babysitting windows; people who can write a clear design piece and produce before-and-after numbers.
Who it doesn't fit: anyone expecting to replicate 19k stars (that's DeepSeek's brand; the same-shape cyrus has only 883); anyone trying to build a general platform head-to-head with Copilot, Codex, or OpenHands; anyone who will ship code but won't write the post.
How to do it:
- Swap the ecosystem. Build a lightweight version that doesn't depend on DSH: add the Router/Worker split and a "speak less" rule, run it directly on Claude Code or Codex CLI, keep it alive with GitHub Actions or a small machine, and make it installable in 10 minutes. Put "Super-agent design, implemented for Claude Code" right in the repo name and the first screen of the README. The copycat repos only got a few dozen stars because they shouted the name without making it "installable and runnable" (inference).
- Build one piece. The most-shared parts of the post are the "speaking discipline" and "the Router only routes, never does the work". Turning one of those into a standalone skill pack or plugin (for example, a notification layer that only pings you when a multi-session agent needs a human) is easier to explain than the full stack.
- Copy the launch playbook. Whatever you build, on launch day publish a long post that explains one counterintuitive call, include a set of before-and-after numbers, and put a SETUP.md in the README written for a coding agent to read. Those get shared more than the code itself.
How to get users: follow its path. Publish the long post on X and Chinese platforms (Zhihu, WeChat Official Accounts). Then, in the comments or DMs of accounts that relay agent architecture breakdowns, such as @omarsar0 and @Hesamation, plus Chinese GitHub recommendation accounts, share an architecture diagram and those numbers. Ride the "DeepSeek Super-agent" term only in the second half of your title; the first half needs to be your own. HN already showed this route doesn't work.
Timing: the library's daily adds have dropped from 5,889 to 944, and topic heat is falling day by day. Ship the ecosystem-swap version within two weeks (before late November) if you're going to; after that window, only the slow path of "good design + good writing" remains (inference).
What would show you're wrong: ① DeepSeek ships its own adaptation for Claude Code or Codex, or Anthropic or OpenAI adds "a persistent Router + speaking discipline" to their own products, which closes the gap you'd be porting into; ② two weeks from now, copycat repos like thefullgc/opensuperagent are still at a few dozen stars, and serious implementations haven't passed a few hundred either, meaning readers only wanted the article, not working code; ③ the reverse: superagent's issue tab opens, releases ship, and daily adds climb again, meaning real people are using it, and then building add-ons for it (dashboards, more channel integrations) becomes the better bet.

deepseek-ai/dsh-superagent-prototype: why it got 19k stars in 6 days

One line
1. What it is
- The first line of the README is a disclaimer: "Research prototype for reference only, not an official DeepSeek product". Most of the engineering was done by a coding agent and does not fully match the internal version or the implementation described in the essay. (GitHub README)
- Shape: a DSH bundle (
cordis.patch.ymlinserts 3 plugins and 2 agent presets into the DSH profile: a Router main Session and a Worker execution Session). Depends ondsh ^0.2.1-alpha.2, about 15k lines of TypeScript, 60 test files, only 1 commits on main, 0 tags/releases. (GitHub repo; Tencent Cloud Developer Community 2774420) - The install isn't meant for humans: SETUP.md says "have your coding agent read this file to install it for you", with a Q&A flow that plans before executing.
- The article's experiment numbers are being quoted everywhere: p95 completion time went from 29.5 min (single Session + subagent) to 15.7 min, with half of tasks done within 12.4 min; the Router batching cut the per-decision reasoning time from 6.4 s to 1.6 s, at the cost of more tokens. (Sina / Zhidx 2026-11-01; Tencent Cloud developer community)
2. Star curve
| Date (our snapshot) | star | Daily + | fork |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026-10-31 repo created (09:32 UTC) | — | — | — |
| 11-01 | 1,988 | — | 166 |
| 11-02 | 6,823 | +4,835 | 677 |

| 11-05 | 18,467 | +2,057 | 2,057 |
| 11-06 | 19,411 | +944 | 2,212 |
(GitHub repo_day) The GitHub page 11-06 showed 20.1k stars / 2.3k forks / 146 watchers later on. Fork-to-star ≈ 11.4%, right around the median for "new repos with ≥5000 stars" (SCHEMA puts it at 11%). Suspect flag is empty: no sign of star-farming. A classic "news spike" shape: peaked on day 2–3, and by day 6 it had already fallen back to 1/6 of its peak.
Same-company reference:
deepseek-ai/DeepInfer(created 10-16) peaked at +12,474 in a single day, 25k stars over three weeks. Tens of thousands of stars is normal for a new official DeepSeek repo, so superagent isn't outperforming its sibling repos.- Parent
deepseek-ai/deepseek-harness(open-sourced 2026-08-13) has 274k stars, averaging +700~1,500 a day in October; 11-03~11-05 rose to +1,224/+1,484/+1,443, a bit above October's baseline of about +750. But in the same period 11-02 also launched Creator Mode, so the lift can't be attributed to superagent alone. (github repo)
3. Where users came from (growth tactics)
Timeline (Beijing time):
- 10-31 night: repo goes public, the DSH team publishes a long Chinese post; Zhidx publishes that night or the next day, "DeepSeek open-sources again! Reveals Super agent architecture," picked up by Sina Finance (11-01). Zhihu, Tencent News ("DeepSeek open-sources Super-Agent code, aims at Claude Code" 11-02), 163, Jiemian, Bilibili, CSDN and the Tencent Cloud developer community follow. → First Chinese wave.
- 10-31 (UTC) HN: two posts, "DeepSeek open-sources dsh-superagent…" at 8 points and "DeepSeek put the architecture…" at 5 points, 0 comments, neither reached the front page; a tweet link post hit 2 points (11-01). (hackernews database) HN is not the source.
- 11-01 19:37: the official @DeepSeekHarness account posts an English long-form piece (X Article), 3.28M views, 13.7k likes, 1702 reposts. (x user DeepSeekHarness)
- Amplifier, same day 11-01:
- @Polymarket, "China's DeepSeek launches "Super-Agent"… to rival Anthropic's Claude Code": 7,263 likes, 400k views. Framing it as a "Chinese Claude Code rival" is what made the story spread beyond niche circles.
- @globaltimesnews (Global Times English), 345 likes.
- @Hesamation's visual explainer, 2,199 likes / 147k views; @AYi_AInotes, a long Chinese take, "Liang Wenfeng is amazing, everyone stand up," 1,052 likes / 168k views; @NFT_Chen video explainer, 291 likes.
- 11-02 @omarsar0 (DAIR.AI, 326K followers) called it "masterclass in building a modern harness" 1,010 likes / 145K views; @AmoebaFarm 648 likes; @nicbstme's explainer video made with Opus 5.5 likes 503.
- (x live "DeepSeek super-agent" "dsh-superagent", 2026-11-06)
- Long English tail from 11-02: MarkTechPost (11-01), explainers from DataCamp, MindStudio, Medium, Substack, kingy.ai, cellcog and others; a YouTube video "DeepSeek's New SuperAgent Can Build an Autonomous AI Coding Team!" (Codedigipt, 16.5k subscribers) with 22.6k views; offloop.org published a full English translation; r/LocalLLaMA has two threads (one on the article, one on the repo, scores not retrievable, reddit 403).
- 11-02 22:03: the official account posts about Creator Mode (a DSH platform feature, 2.45M views, 25k likes). The same account got high exposure two days running, which made the DSH ecosystem as a whole visible. 11-03 was superagent's single-day peak, consistent with the aftershocks of these two posts.
Bottom line: there were no ads and no sign of influencer buys. It was entirely first-party official content plus media and KOL retelling triggered by the brand. The users are developers and AI-circle readers who came to bookmark the companion code for an important agent-architecture article, not to use the tool.
4. Competitors: who else does the same thing
The "always-on coding agent you can @ in GitHub or chat and it ships a PR" space is already crowded. Superagent isn't the first, and not even the most usable:
| Product | Where | Launched | Scale | How superagent differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GitHub Copilot coding agent (assign an issue to Copilot) | Big-company features | 2025 | Built into GitHub, paid users | Hosted and works out of the box; superagent is self-hosted, plugs into Feishu, and has a Router with cross-task memory plus "proactive / observe" rules |
| Claude Code GitHub Actions / claude-code-action | Open source + big company | 2025-05 | 9.8k stars (github repo) | One trigger, one run. No always-on Router and no cross-channel continuity |
| OpenAI Codex (cloud + @codex in GitHub) | Big-company feature / open-source CLI | 2025-04 | openai/codex 133k stars | Same, hosted; superagent emphasizes speaking sparingly to protect people's attention |
| OpenHands | Open source | 2024-03 | 93k stars | General dev-agent platform with a GitHub resolver; no Router/Worker two-layer product argument |
| SWE-agent / mini-swe-agent | Open source | 2024-04 / 2025-06 | 20.7k / 9.1k stars | Academic baseline for "take an issue and fix it"; not always-on, no routing |
| LangChain open-swe | Open source | 2025-05 | 11k stars | Asynchronous cloud coding agent, the closest open-source peer; it has about half the stars superagent got in 6 days |
| cyrus (a Claude Code background agent for Linear/Slack/GitHub) | Open source | 2025-04 | 883 star | Nearly the same product shape, but no brand, and almost nobody sees it |
| open-inspect/background-agents | Open source | 2026-01 | 3.5k star | Open-source background coding-agent system |
| OpenClaw | Open source | 2025-11 | 394k stars | Always-on, multi-channel personal assistant (not coding-specific), a forerunner of the "always-on" narrative |
| ByteDance DeerFlow ("SuperAgent harness") | Open source | 2025-05 | 85k stars | Uses the same word "SuperAgent" for long-running research/coding, not event-driven always-on |
| Devin / Cursor background agents / Bugbot | Commercial | 2024–2025 | Commercial products | Hosted, with Slack/GitHub integration; superagent is MIT-licensed open source and publishes its full design |
(All star counts from our github repo 2026-11-06)
Why the similar open-source projects didn't get this many stars: cyrus, open-swe and background-agents overlap in features and are even more mature, but each lacks two things: the DeepSeek name, and a long essay spread as an "industry textbook."
5. Differentiation
The real differentiation is at the idea layer, not the code layer:
- Turn the agent from a "single session" into a "persistent continuous entity": the Router only routes and never does the work, Workers isolate concurrency; event-driven + two-level filtering + chained recall; compute/state separation + an external Watchdog; a speaking discipline of "spend less of people's attention, give more value" (only speak when a human must act or the result is usable; proactive defaults to observe mode).
- Explains agents using classic computer-systems concepts (scheduling, batching, caching, watchdogs), with a quantified comparison (p95 29.5→15.7 min).
- On the engineering side: installation is handed to the agent (SETUP.md is written for the agent), and the docs have one-way numbered dependencies. This itself is being spread as a paradigm.
Why it took off: partly. Big accounts mostly reposted the essay (omarsar0 "best write-up", Hesamation's visualization, AYi's long take), which means it hit on the judgment that "the bottleneck is human attention, not the model". It named a pain point for people running 3–5 Claude Code/Codex sessions at once. But without the DeepSeek brand, the same idea (cyrus, open-swe already did it) doesn't reach this scale. The code itself (prototype, only runs on DSH alpha, 1 commits, no release) is hardly the reason.
6. Visibility and copycats
- Visibility: widely discussed: Sina / Zhidx, Tencent News, Global Times English, MarkTechPost, DataCamp-style explainers, Polymarket at 400k views, the official long-form piece at 3.28M views. This wasn't a small-circle discovery.
- Copycats have already appeared (github repo, created ≥10-31):
thefullgc/opensuperagent, "DeepSeek Super-agent open-source implementation," 48 stars;mitkox/copilot-superagent, "Towards a More Autonomous Agent System for Enterprises" (copying the same one-line description), 26 stars;saltapp/dsh-superagent-prototype-cn, Chinese docs, 20 stars.- Name-riding: on X, @SuperAgent_SAI made a video using "Super Agent Whitepaper" and promoted the $SAI token (756 likes).
- At the same time the DSH plugin ecosystem exploded (dsh-jailbreak-workflow 672, dsh-see-now 383, dsh-media-desk 164, etc.), which suggests that the people actually building are on the DSH platform itself, not on superagent.
7. Takeaways
- "Long essay + companion code" released together: the code repo is just evidence for the argument, and the stars came from the essay being shared. Spelling out a counterintuitive judgment (the bottleneck is human attention) thoroughly gets more big-account reposts than shipping a usable tool.
- Gives numbers that can be restated in one sentence (p95 29.5→15.7 min), which every headline is using.
- The "benchmarks X" framing was done for them by third parties (Polymarket, Tencent News "aims at Claude Code"). The official side only says "research prototype," which reads as restrained and more credible.
- Shipping setup to an agent (SETUP.md is written for a coding agent to read) is a reusable new-style onboarding design.
- But the brand is the non-copyable part: a same-shape project, cyrus, has only 883 stars.
8. Uncertain
- How many people actually installed and ran it: no release, needs DSH alpha + a separate GitHub account + tmux, a high bar. Issue count 0 (issues may be closed off), so usage can't be judged.
- The scores and comments on the two r/LocalLLaMA posts were not read (reddit 403).
- How much of the 11-03 peak came from the overflow of the 11-02 Creator Mode tweet can't be separated out.
- Whether it will become a formal product later (the README says some design ideas in the article are "future direction, prototype not implemented").
