"Someone open-sourced Logic Pro": a DAW one person built in 18 days with Claude Code. Why did 3,000 people download it and only 181 stars?

What it is An open-source music production app that looks and works like Apple's Logic Pro, installable on Windows, Mac and Linux.

Why it took off "AI clone of commercial software" is a hot trend; Pro Tools and FL Studio have already been cloned, and Logic was the one left open. After it was added to a directory of rewritten software, a music YouTuber covering this series made a video about it the same day.

CHow you could follow it Copy the distribution path: pick a professional app that exists on only one platform and hasn't been cloned, package installers, get it into directories, and send the link directly to YouTubers who cover clone topics. To get stars, you also need a technical piece developers care about, posted separately on HN.

Grade C: the path is worth learning, and Logic is a slot it genuinely claimed first, but it mainly brings in music-maker downloads, not stars (even with nearly everything done right it only has 181 stars). The AI-clone DAW category is already saturated, with copyright and platform risks, and the window is closing, so following it for stars isn't worth it. Chatter in small circles

ProWave is an open-source music production app built by a Portuguese indie dev as a clone of Apple's Logic Pro. It runs on Windows and Linux. On Oct 30, five music production YouTubers covered it on the same day, for about 110k views combined. The installers were downloaded around 3,000 times, but the GitHub repo has only 181 stars. The gap it hit is worth understanding, but if you're after stars, this path is narrower than it looks.

The Oct 30 morning video

In 2026 Oct 30, the music production channel Busy Works Beats posted a video titled "Someone Open Sourced Logic Pro!" The description was two lines: "Pro Wave (Open-Source Rust Project on Remade.wiki)" followed by a GitHub link. A week later, the video had 39,153 views and 174 comments (YouTube, 11-06).

The most-liked comment: "What I love about those tools is that they can run on Linux natively." Another wrote, "I'm tired of swapping between my mac and my PC. I'm DL'n this as soon as i get off work!" Someone else: "*the first legal logic pro on windows ever guys*". The author also showed up in the comments: "I'll release a huge update soon for Pro Wave."

Same day, Bolo Da Producer posted "They Cloned Logic Pro!?" (44,706 views), Greg Kocis posted "Logic Pro For Windows & Linux?" (about 13k, with a blog post to go with it), Soniq Sounds posted one with 4,422 views, and Busy Works Beats followed up with "Audio Companies are in TROUBLE Now" (8,947). Before that, the repo had been up for 11 days with 22 stars total.

What it is

In one line: a DAW (digital audio workstation) that looks like Logic Pro and works like it too, written in pure Rust, with the UI drawn in egui, no Electron, no JUCE. The author is Fábio Soares (fabox-os on GitHub, from Porto, 27 followers). The repo was created Oct 19. Of 103 commits, 3 are directly credited to claude, and the repo includes an AGENTS.md written for AI agents.

What works now: tracks, MIDI and audio clips, recording, a piano roll, a mixer with effects and automation, a built-in synth, and guitar amp modeling. The README reports its own progress: 176 menu items done, 73 of them (41%), and 24 of 77 roadmap items done. Opening Logic's project files, .logicx, doesn't work yet; the repo only has a format note.

The part that got real effort is distribution: every version tag automatically builds the full set of installers for Windows, macOS, .deb, .rpm, AppImage, and Flatpak. The first thing on the README is a screenshot that's nearly indistinguishable from Logic. A YouTuber who can't code can download it, double-click, and start recording a video.

Why this one, and why these days

A wave of "AI clones commercial software" is hot. In October, the reverse-engineering repo REA went viral, and Low Level's "I Tested The Viral Reverse Engineering Repo" hit 3.64M views. That same month, the storytold org under ArtCraft released WordCraft (a Word clone, 17.4k stars), CADCraft, GridCraft, and SoundCraft (a Pro Tools clone, 4.1k stars). Music YouTubers chased the topic for weeks: "Open Source Pro Tools Just Got an Update!" (10-1.57M) and "FL Studio is now Open Source!" (10-2.67M).

The Logic slot was still open. Someone had cloned Pro Tools, someone had cloned FL Studio (LYNX SHARE, honeydew), but nobody had done Logic. ProWave filled that gap, and the same channels picked it up for their next video. The same author used the same approach (Claude Code + Rust/egui) to clone DaVinci Resolve as the Picasso Suite, which has only 37 stars and no big channel covering it. The difference is who you clone and when.

The title sells itself. Logic only runs on Mac, and "Logic for Windows" is something musicians have wished for for years. One commenter said, "It was on Windows before! When Emagic owned Logic! I ran it in Windows XP." Around Oct 27, Logic Pro 13 had just updated, and Logic users were already watching related videos that week. (Whether there's a causal link is unverified.)

11-04@dextune posted an intro thread on X, 9,660 views, 224 bookmarks
11-06A single-day gain of +42 stars, the biggest day so far. I couldn't find which piece of content drove it.

The chain is clear: it got listed in a directory first, YouTubers hunting for clone topics then picked it from the directory for their next video, and forums and X spread it further. Busy Works Beats named Remade.wiki directly in the video description, which suggests he found it by browsing the directory himself rather than the author pitching him (inference). The author's own YouTube channel has almost no views, it doesn't show up on HN, and no tech outlet has written about it.

Star count over time went 10-30 22 → 10-31 56 → 11-02 95 → 11-04 123 → 11-06 181 (GitHub daily star counts). Release package downloads total about 3,000, and v0.2.1 alone accounts for 1,700 (GitHub Releases, 11-06). Downloads are more than ten times the stars. The people coming in were musicians who wanted to install it and try it, not developers who would casually star a repo.

The criticism

The VI-Control thread ran two pages of argument. One person said: "Whilst decompiled/recompiled cloned software is technically not the same as pirated software, it is just as unethical." Another replied: "Every time I see a new vibe coded… DAW I feel the need to remind people that Reaper exists." The original poster tested it on Linux and concluded, "It opens but that's about it." Another put it more bluntly: "This will not be another Logic… It feels more like a proof-of-concept thing."

The Issues tab has both kinds of voices too: one says "NOT RECORDING AND NOTHING WORKS," another says "Bravo 👏🏼," and others ask for Apple Loops, an open-source Alchemy, or a mobile version. A YouTube comment warned: "the frontier AI's are being instructed to not clone commercial applications." On Logic Pro Help, someone worried Apple might raise trademark issues. The README includes a disclaimer (no Apple code, images, or sounds included), but the project's topics still include logic-pro-workflow.

ProWave is the only one built to mimic Logic, and it's the only one on GitHub right now. But the broad category of "AI-cloned commercial DAWs" is already crowded. The ones reaching thousands of stars are organized series, not solo projects.

If it were you

Verdict: Copy its distribution chain, but don't expect stars from it. Pick a clone target that's still open, ship installers for every platform, and get into directories so YouTubers come to you. That path works, but what it brings is downloads, not stars. ProWave hit nearly all of these, and even so it got only 181 stars in 18 days.

Who it suits: Developers already inside a creator community (music, video editing, design, 3D) who can use tools like Claude Code to put together a version that looks right and installs in two or three weeks, and who care more about building a reputation, Discord, and users in that community than about GitHub numbers.

Who it doesn't suit: Anyone who only wants stars, anyone scared of cease-and-desist letters or of being called "just piracy," and anyone who thinks a month will get them usable professional software. The forum consensus is that "none of them are ready for real work yet."

How to do it: Start with a table: which professional apps exist on only one platform, have lots of users, and aren't cheap, and which of those have already been cloned. Apple's pro apps beyond Final Cut Pro and Logic, and Windows-only tools that could come to Mac or Linux, are all worth checking. Pick one that's still open, and don't use the trademark as the name (ProWave didn't call itself Logic). Make the README state clearly that it contains no original code or assets. Ship installers for all platforms on day one, and put a screenshot and a progress table on the first screen. If you want stars, add something developers care about: reading the original project files, plugin formats, or a reusable Rust audio/UI component others can build on. That's what gets developers to star a repo.

How to get users: Submit to remade.wiki, AlternativeTo, AppImage Hub, and Flathub first. Then find the YouTubers already running "XX got open-sourced" series and send them the link directly, since they're always short on the next topic. For developer stars, write a separate technical post for Show HN and r/rust that covers the architecture, not "who we cloned."

Timing: Within the next month or two, while the clone wave is still hot (estimate). YouTubers chase novelty, and once there are five or six similar clones, viewers get tired of it. Comment sections already show it: "All of this extra cloning of DAWs is exhausting."

Signs you've misjudged it: ① ProWave gained more than 2,000 stars organically within a month, which would mean the musician community can drive stars, and it's worth pushing harder. ② Apple or another vendor sends a takedown notice and GitHub removes these repos, which would mean the window has closed. ③ The next "XX got open-sourced" video drops below ten thousand views, which would mean the topic is cooling and the approach needs to change.

fabox-os/Pro-Wave (ProWave): why it took off

Research date 2026-11-06. Data sources: our github database (repo_profile / repo_day), GitHub API (repos, releases, issues, commits), YouTube Data API, Jina search and page text. GitHub's core endpoints were rate-limited that day, so we couldn't get per-stargazer timestamps; the star curve uses only the daily snapshots in our database.

One line

ProWave is an open-source DAW written with Claude Code by Fábio Soares (fabox), an indie developer in Porto, Portugal. It's pure Rust + egui, copies the interface and workflow of Apple's Logic Pro, and runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. It took off for three reasons: first, the October 2026 wave of "AI clean-room rewrites of commercial software" (ArtCraft's SoundCraft/WordCraft, REA reverse-engineering everything); second, the headline "Logic Pro finally runs on Windows/Linux," which musicians have wanted for years; third, 5 music-production YouTubers made videos about it on 10-30, roughly 110k views combined. Its GitHub star count is small (181) because the people watching those videos are musicians, not developers who star repos. The real usage signal is the release downloads, about 3,000.

1. Basic data

  • Repo created 2026-10-19, GPL-3.0. The author is a personal account, fabox-os (registered 2021, 27 followers, only 2 public repos). 103 commits in total: 98 by the author, 3 attributed to claude (Claude Code's signature), and 2 external contributors (GitHub API).
  • The README says this is early development: 176 menu items done out of 73 (41%), and 24 of 77 roadmap items complete. The repo includes AGENTS.md (rules for contributors and AI agents) and LOGICX-FORMAT-SPEC.md (notes on reading Logic .logicx projects).
  • Star count (our github database, repo_day): 10-30 22 → 10-31 56 → 11-01 83 → 11-02 95 → 11-03 113 → 11-04 123 → 11-05 139 → 11-06 181. The repo collected only about 22 stars in its first 11 days, and growth didn't start until 10-30.
  • Release downloads (GitHub Releases API, 11-06): v0.2.1 (10-31) 1,700 downloads, v0.1.10 (10-24) 891 downloads, other versions about 380 combined, about 3,000 in total. Downloads run more than ten times the star count, which suggests the main visitors were musicians who wanted to install and try it.
  • The issues make it clear musicians are the ones asking for features: Apple Loops support, an open-source Alchemy, plugin formats, a mobile version, plus "NOT RECORDING AND NOTHING WORKS" and "Bravo 👏🏼" (Issues #4–#11).
  • It's updating fast: from 11-05 to 11-06 more than a dozen PRs were merged in a single day (Space Designer convolution reverb, SoundFont instruments, MIDI Clock, the project settings window, etc.). It looks like an agent is pumping out features in batches.

11-06Stars grew by 42 that day, the biggest single-day gain so far. I didn't find which video or post drove itGitHub repo

Takeaway: the growth channel we can confirm is music-production YouTube. It started with the remade.wiki listing, and forums and X picked it up afterward. I found no Hacker News post (Algolia search returned nothing), no tech-press coverage, and no paid ads. The author's own channel got almost no views.

3. Why now: the platform and the trend

  • AI clean-room rewrite wave. In October 2026, "REA (Reverse Engineer Anything)" went viral: Low Level's video "I Tested The Viral Reverse Engineering Repo" (10-16 published, 3.64M views; Outskill's REA tutorial 350k). The same month, the storytold org under ArtCraft batch-released WordCraft (Word, 17.4k stars), CADCraft (7.7k), GridCraft (7.2k), SoundCraft (Pro Tools, 4.1k) and more (see our GitHub repo). Music YouTubers ran clone topics for weeks: "Open Source Pro Tools Just Got an Update!" (10-1.57M), "FL Studio is now Open Source!" (10-2.67M), "This Producer CLONED All the Waves Plugins!" (10-25). Pro Tools and FL Studio have both been cloned, but the Logic slot is still empty, and ProWave fits it exactly, so the same channels are treating it as the next topic.
  • Logic's own buzz. Around 10-27, Logic Pro shipped an update 13, and Greg Kocis and That Logic Pro Guy both made videos (77k and 28k views), so Logic users were already scrolling through related content that week. I haven't confirmed that the timing was causal, only that it coincided.
  • The demand was always there. Logic only runs on Mac, and "Logic for Windows" has been a long-running request; in Logic Pro Help someone recalls "back in my day Logic ran on PC." The headline alone is clickable.

On GitHub, ProWave is the only Logic-style clone we could find (we searched our database for terms like "logic pro" and counted repos under 60 days old with 20+ stars; nothing else turned up).

5. Differentiation, and whether it's the reason it took off

  • The differentiation is narrow: it looks like Logic, and runs on Windows/Linux. A forum post put it as "Channel strip faders aside, it's Logic's twin" (VI-Control). The technical selling points (pure Rust, no Electron/JUCE, zero allocations on the audio thread) are written for developers; almost no musician videos mention them.
  • The differentiation is why it took off. The same author and the same approach (Claude Code + Rust/egui + cloning well-known software) produced Picasso Suite, a DaVinci Resolve clone indexed 10-24, which has only 37 stars and no big video. The difference is that ProWave's target fills the one gap in the music YouTuber clone series (Pro Tools and FL are covered, Logic wasn't), plus the ready-made headline "Logic on Windows."
  • The screenshots look very close to the real thing, the README has a status progress table, and there are one-click installers for every platform (including .deb/.rpm/AppImage/Flatpak). YouTubers can download it and record a video right away. Projects like SoundCraft use the same "installs easily, looks right" approach.

6. How many people see it and whether anyone follows

  • Visibility: it has spread in the music production scene (5+ YouTube videos, roughly 110k views combined; 3 specialist forums; one X post with 9.6k views), while the tech community and media barely know about it (no HN, no tech press, only 181 GitHub stars, and it hasn't hit our trending list since it's only 18 days old and trending requires 60 days).
  • Copycats: no second Logic clone project has appeared yet. Mr. Mig's "I Built a Logic Pro Clone With ChatGPT" actually compiled and ran ProWave, not a separate build. The "AI clones commercial DAW" niche is already crowded (SoundCraft, LYNX SHARE, honeydew, suhina-daw, ableton-linux).
  • Risks: some on VI-Control argue this is as unethical as piracy; on Logic Pro Help someone mentioned Apple might act on trademark grounds. The README has a disclaimer (no Apple code, images or sounds were used; Logic is referenced only to describe the workflow), but the project name and topics still include "logic-pro-workflow."

7. What others can learn

  1. Topic: find a professional app that only runs on one platform, has a big user base, and sells at a high price, and build an open-source clone of it as "X for Windows/Linux", with X's name right in the title.
  2. Start with directories like remade.wiki, AlternativeTo and AppImage Hub. Clone-focused YouTubers (like Busy Works Beats) look for their next topic in these directories.
  3. Ship one-click installers for every platform on day one, and put a prominent screenshot and progress table in the README so creators who don't code can install it and film a video.
  4. Move during the trend window: see which gap remains in the same content category, then fill that slot.

8. Still unclear

  • Per-day star history (GitHub rate-limited us, so we didn't get it); the source of the +42 single-day spike on 11-06 is unconfirmed.
  • The heat of the r/linuxaudio thread (Reddit requires human verification, so we couldn't read it).
  • Whether Bolo Da Producer and Busy Works Beats were contacted by the author. Busy Works Beats saying "on Remade.wiki" suggests they found it in the directory themselves.
  • How many people actually use it and whether they stay: of roughly 3,000 downloads, many may have installed it just to look. Issue #7 says "nothing works."
  • Whether Apple will act.
