A big project forces users to log in, and one person moved its content into Claude Code: open-design-agent-kit went from 14 to 1000 stars in two weeks
What it is It packages the skills, 198 brand design systems and examples of the open-source design tool Open Design as plugins, skills and MCP servers that work directly in Copilot, Claude Code, Codex and Cursor, without installing its desktop app.
Why it took off The upstream project is famous and was criticised for forcing login, so there was ready demand for "Open Design without login or an app install". The author replied under complaint threads and posted in several Claude-related Reddit communities, and a batch of skill and MCP directories picked it up automatically.
CHow to get in: Don't ship another Open Design wrapper. Pick a big open-source project that users hate for friction (login, app install, API key setup), split its content into skills, plugins or MCP servers inside agents, name them after the original project, and post in its complaint threads and the relevant communities.

Open Design is a 106k-star open-source design tool. In August it began forcing login, and users complained. A Shanghai indie developer took its skills, brand design systems and examples, and packaged them for Copilot, Claude Code, Codex and Cursor, with the pitch "no app to install, no backend to run, no key to configure". He then replied under the original project's complaint threads and posted in several Claude communities on Reddit. Two weeks later it had 1000 stars. The playbook is clear and cheap, and worth learning. But this exact position is already crowded, and the content is all borrowed, so copying it to build another one isn't worth much.
One message: "login is now mandatory"
In August 2026 7, someone opened an issue on nexu-io/open-design titled "Login is now mandatory and cannot be skipped". The project had only been open-sourced in late April, had grown to 100k stars in a few months, and had been covered by outlets like XDA and TechTimes. It was the best-known "open-source Claude Design". After the mandatory login to OpenDesign Cloud, the criticism followed: on 22 August, r/LocalLLaMA ran a post titled "OpenDesign is closinDesign. Now it forces you to create an account". Another thread in the repo's discussions was blunter: "Open Design is half-baked software with shameless cash-grab tactics". Official support replied underneath, apologised and asked for an email address to process refunds.
Around mid-October, under that r/LocalLLaMA post, an account named IX left a comment: "Try Open Design Agent Kit which allows you use the Open Design directly in your coding agent." An almost identical line appeared under an r/SideProject thread asking "has anyone used Open Design?".
IX is the author of feimacode/open-design-agent-kit, GitHub account ivenxu, profile location Shanghai, with only 4 followers. The repo was created in September 19, and up to October 25 it gained only 1 to 4 stars a day.
What it is
The first line of the README: bring Open Design's design skills, brand design systems and editable examples into GitHub Copilot Chat, Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and any MCP-capable agent. Right after, in bold: "No desktop app. No daemon. No extra account, API key, or model settings."
All the content comes from upstream (Apache-2.0, with a section in the README stating the source): 181 skills, 198 brand design systems, 193 finished examples, and 13 docs on typography, color, accessibility, and "don't look like AI made it." The author's own work is the "install" side and the "pipeline":
- Install paths everywhere: a VS Code extension, a Claude Code plugin plus MCP, the Codex skills directory, an
npxcommand, a hosted MCP connector. In October 22 they also added a directory aimed at Claude Design, where 199 design systems can be synced over directly. - The pipeline: first it reads the components already in your project, then renders the output in a real browser to check text truncation, contrast, and the "AI look." A "nitpicky" reviewer agent then gives a verdict. It exports PNG, PPTX, and PDF, and once you're happy, one click converts it into your project's official components.
- The output is just ordinary files in the repo, so you can diff them and commit them. Unlike upstream, they don't live in the app's own database.
The README also has a comparison table: on the left "Open Design desktop," on the right "Agent Kit," comparing install, where you work, whose model you use, and whether configuration is needed row by row. The whole repo exists to back the line "upstream is too heavy."
48 days, 338 commits, 13 releases, with 150 commits credited to Claude, and many PRs from branches starting with claude/. It's basically one person working with Claude Code. The same entity also sells a paid plugin that plugs Qwen, DeepSeek, GLM, and Kimi into Copilot (feimacode.com), so for them this free repo works more like a storefront.
How the stars came
| Timeline | What happened | Stars |
|---|---|---|
| 9-19 | Repo created | Then for more than a month, 1–4 per day |
| Around mid-October | The author left replies under a Reddit complaint thread on r/LocalLLaMA and a r/SideProject thread asking "has anyone used Open Design?" recommending the repo | Single digits |
| 10-22 | Added 199 design systems for Claude Design | Single digits |
| 10-23 ~ 10-26 (inferred from post numbering) | The author posted "Open Design Agent Kit — Open Design's design skills to Claude Code" on r/ClaudeCode and r/claudeskills (about 110k subscribers), with a demo video. The same post went to r/opencode. "198 design systems, drag them straight into Claude Design (open source, free)" went to r/ClaudeDesign and r/DesignSystems. 10-25 opened a batch of good first issues in one go. | 4 → 14(10-27) |
| 10-28 | Listed by claudemarketplaces.com, then Trendshift, the official MCP Registry, and a string of mirror sites followed. | |
| 10-29 ~ 10-30 | Breakout, with a single-day peak of +140 (10-30) | 280 → 411 |
| 10-31 ~ 11-04 | About +100 a day. Contributors from India and Vietnam opened PRs, and someone submitted a Japanese README. | 544 → 947 |
| 11-06 | Only +8 that day | 1000,98 forks |
Stars: up to 10-27 come from funcoding.ai's star history; from 10-29 on, it's daily GitHub data.
The Reddit posts went up two to three days before stars took off, and the timing lines up. But how many upvotes each post got, and which one brought the most traffic, isn't visible from outside. On Chinese X, three or four alt accounts posted recommendations with very similar copy ("stuff 270 skills into Copilot and Claude Code, no app install, no key needed"), each with only 1 to 3 likes, so they were not the main driver. Hacker News, big X accounts, media, and Product Hunt: none of them picked it up.
Looking at actual usage: the VS Code extension has been installed 908 times (11-06), and the MCP npm package has been downloaded 120 to 300 times daily since October 28. Behind 1000 stars, the number of people actually using it is in the thousands.
Why this one
- The name is borrowed. The repo and title are both called Open Design, so anyone searching the term gets sent here. Upstream has a reputation of 100k stars, and this repo stands beside it without spending a cent on promotion.
- The resentment was already there. Upstream forced login and got criticized for cashing in, so a group of people wanted "Open Design without login or app installs." The line "No desktop app. No daemon. No API key" caught that frustration. The author didn't trash upstream either; the README says "it's good, it's just one more thing to install, keep running, and configure."
- Say it in the right places. The people who most need to hear this are those complaining about Open Design and those using Claude Code. The author went to both: replying under complaint threads, and posting in Claude-related communities.
- The format rode the trend. Around autumn 2026, skills, plugins, and MCP were becoming a new way to distribute software, and "install it into the agent you already use" sells better than "install another app." One body of content turned into five or six formats, each able to get into a directory site, so there were more entry points, and the directory sites promoted it on their own.
- A hook that can stand as its own post. "198 design systems, drag them straight into Claude Design" worked as a standalone post on r/ClaudeDesign. The fork rate is close to 10%, higher than a typical repo, possibly because Claude Design users forked it to sync (inferred, not verified).
Who's competing
This space isn't empty, and the competitors are all much bigger:
| Project | Stars | Compared with alternatives |
|---|---|---|
| nexu-io/open-design | 106k | The source of the content. It now also works as a skill, plugin, and MCP itself, which directly overlaps |
| nextlevelbuilder/ui-ux-pro-max-skill | 146k | A retrieval-based design knowledge skill, without a brand system pack or an export pipeline |
| VoltAgent/awesome-design-md | 126k | Just a pile of DESIGN.md files |
| pbakaus/impeccable | 104k, +8787 in the last 7 days | Design vocabulary and review commands; it specifically built interoperability with Impeccable |
| alchaincyf/huashu-design | 29k | Same positioning in the Chinese community; one sentence in an agent outputs web pages and PPTs, and the content is self-made |
| oil-oil/oil-ui, logo-design-skill | 2805 / 6054 | Design skills that launched in the same period in September, and they all grew faster than it did |
| ckryptickunal/OpenDesigner | 73 | Same idea, shipped later |
There's also Anthropic's own Claude Design and the official frontend-design skill. Among projects with tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of stars, 1000 stars is small, and its growth had already dropped to single digits by November 6.
What you can learn
What's actually valuable isn't the code but a playbook:
- Find a famous large open-source project that users are annoyed with. The complaint is best stated in one sentence: it requires login, a desktop app, a background daemon, a separate key, or only works on one platform.
- Extract its most valuable part and install it where users already are. For this wave, that means skills, plugins, and MCP for Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, and Copilot. Name it after the original project, and put the comparison table on the first screen of the README.
- Speak where the resentment lives. The original project's complaint issues, "has anyone used X?" threads, and the relevant subreddits: one line and one link in each place.
- One body of content, many formats. Each extra format gets one more directory site to list it.
- Open a batch of good first issues, so the repo looks maintained, and external contributors and translation PRs follow.
Its weaknesses are also clear: the content belongs to someone else, and once upstream makes its own agent version (which it is already doing), the repo is left with only "no login required." And the reputation a wrapper repo builds is hard to call yours.
If it were you
The verdict: the playbook is worth learning, but don't follow into this slot. "Borrow a big project's name and its reputation crisis, build a lightweight agent version, then say one line under the complaint thread" can push a zero-follower repo to 1000 stars in two weeks, at low cost. But someone already built a lightweight Open Design, upstream supports MCP itself, and the design skill space is full of hundred-thousand-star projects, so copying this exact move won't get you much.
Who it suits: developers who move fast, are willing to watch the community every day, use tools like Claude Code to iterate quickly, want stars and visibility, and don't care whether the content is original.
Who it doesn't suit: people who want to build something of their own and grow their own reputation. A repo that packages someone else's content gets stars, but people remember the original project. It's an even worse fit for anyone hoping to make money from it, since this kind of repo doesn't charge.
How to do it:
- Pick a different upstream. Scan issues and Reddit over the last three months for open-source projects with 10k+ stars, looking for complaints like "forced login," "changed the license," "started charging," "desktop only," or "only supports one model."
- Judge whether the project's value lies mainly in its content (templates, prompts, rules, data) rather than in the app itself. If so, extract the content into a skill, Claude Code plugin, or MCP, and state the source clearly wherever the license allows.
- Or do the opposite and fill the part it did poorly: for example, a version for Chinese or Japanese users, or an agent it doesn't cover.
- README first screen: one line that says "no X, no Y," a comparison table with upstream, and a 30-second demo video.
How to get users: first leave one line under the upstream complaint issues, discussion threads, and "has anyone used it?" posts. Then post in relevant communities like r/ClaudeCode and r/claudeskills, each with a video, and submit each format to its matching directory (the Claude plugin marketplace, the MCP Registry, skill leaderboards). Don't count on HN or X; it didn't rely on either.
When to do it: this playbook depends on two things: the upstream resentment has just started and hasn't been fixed officially, and the skills and MCP directories are still auto-indexing and haven't been flooded yet. The window is probably a few months (inferred), so the best time to launch is within one or two months of the resentment appearing.
Signs you've misread it: the upstream quickly reverses the controversial change (Open Design already reversed one once), or it ships its own agent version; a week after posting, stars are still in double digits; or the repo itself stalls at a little over a thousand after mid-November. Any of these means the "borrowed resentment" push fades faster than you expect.

Why feimacode/open-design-agent-kit took off
Research date 2026-11-06. Data card: repo age 2026-09-19,48 days, 1000 stars / 98 forks, +589 over the last 7 days, single-day peak +140 (10-30), 11-06 gained +8.
One line
It's a "no-app" repackaging of the viral open-source project nexu-io/open-design (106k stars): it takes Open Design's 181 skills, 198 brand design systems and 193 editable examples and drops them as-is into plugins or MCP servers for Copilot Chat / Claude Code / Codex / Cursor. No desktop app to install, no background process, no API key setup. It gained 1000 stars by riding the upstream's name and the upstream's reputation crisis (August, when the upstream forced login and drew backlash), plus the founder posting in several Claude subreddits, driving traffic from complaint threads about the upstream, and the hook of 198 design systems prepared for Claude Design. The product itself is active (338 commits, 13 releases), but the differentiation is mainly in the distribution format, not the content. All the content comes from the upstream.
1. What it is
- README:"Open Design Agent Kit brings Open Design's design skills, brand design systems, and remixable examples into GitHub Copilot Chat, Claude Code, Codex, Cursor… No desktop app. No daemon. No extra account, API key, or model settings."(https://github.com/feimacode/open-design-agent-kit)
- The content is vendored from the upstream (Apache-2.0), as stated in the README's Provenance section. What was built in-house: a VS Code extension (languageModelTools), a Claude Code plugin + MCP, Codex
.agents/skills, annpxCLI, a hosted MCP connector (open-design.feimacode.com/mcp), PNG/PPTX/PDF/video export, browser-rendering self-checks, a "design critic" review step, and aclaude-design-systems/directory for Claude Design (199 systems, 10-22 added). - Author: the organization feimacode (Feima Code), with the main committer on GitHub being
ivenxu(IX, profile says Shanghai, commit timezone +1100, only 4 followers). Of 338 commits, 150 are credited to Claude, and many are PRs fromclaude/project-thread-*branches, so it's essentially one person building with Claude Code. The same entity sells Feima Copilot (connects Qwen / DeepSeek / GLM / Kimi to Copilot Chat, pay-per-use, feimacode.com). For them this repo looks more like a traffic driver and brand play.
2. Growth data
- Star curve (star history scraped by funcoding.ai): from 9-27 to 10-25 it stayed at 1–4 stars; 10-27 had 14; 10-29 to 280; 10-31 to 582; 11-02 to 788; 11-04 to 963; 11-06 to 1005. Our repo tracking (github.repo_day) starts at 271 on 10-29, gaining +140/+133/+102/+98/+132/+71/+45/+8 per day, and it's decelerating.
- VS Code extension: 908 installs (Marketplace API, 11-06), listed 9-21.
- npm:
@feimacode/open-design-agent-kit-mcphad about 3500 total downloads from 9-15 to 11-05, then 120–300 per day since 10-28;@feimacode/open-design-agent-kithad 1289 downloads in the last 30 days (npm API). - Bottom line: the star count is 1000, but the people actually installing it are in the thousands, not tens of thousands.
- Our repo's
suspectfield is empty (no star-inflation signal). The GitHub stargazers endpoint has been 404 for all repos these past few days, so the quality of the starring accounts can't be checked. This item is unverified.
3. Competitors
| Product | Where | When | Scale | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| nexu-io/open-design | Open-source desktop app + daemon | 2026-04-28 | 106k stars, 12k forks, +1243 in the last 7 days | The source of the content. Ships its own app, background process, project database and model config. In August it forced login to OpenDesign Cloud and was criticized (issues #6599, #7275, discussion #7215 titled "half-baked software with shameless cash-grab tactics"); 0.21.1 reversed course. The upstream can now also be used as a skill/plugin/MCP, which directly overlaps with this repo. |
| Claude Design(Anthropic) | Big-company features | Around April 2026 | Anthropic (official) | Paid, and meant for use inside Claude. It in turn prepared 199 design systems for Claude Design, letting people sync them directly from its GitHub repo. |
| frontend-design in anthropics/skills | Open-source / official skill | 2025-09 | 188k stars (whole repo) | A prompt only, with no design system library and no export or self-check tooling |
| pbakaus/impeccable | Open-source skills | 2025-11 | 104k stars, +8787 over the last 7 days | Design vocabulary and review commands. It also built explicit interop with Impeccable (PRODUCT.md / DESIGN.md). |
| nextlevelbuilder/ui-ux-pro-max-skill | Open-source skills | 2025-11 | 146k stars | A design-knowledge retrieval skill, with no brand system packs and no artifact pipeline |
| VoltAgent/awesome-design-md | Open-source collection | 2026-03 | 126k stars | Only a DESIGN.md file, no tooling |
| alchaincyf/huashu-design | Open-source skill (Chinese-speaking scene) | 2026-04 | 29k stars | One sentence in your agent gets you a web page / PPT / animation. The positioning is nearly identical. |
| opencoworkai/open-codesign, opendesigner.io | Open-source desktop app | 2026 | Not verified | Another Claude Design alternative, a BYOK desktop app |
| ckryptickunal/OpenDesigner | Open-source plugins | 2026-09-23 | 73 star | Same idea (design-system plugins for Claude/ChatGPT/Codex/Cursor), but much smaller in scale |
| oil-oil/oil-ui, kaankiziltug/logo-design-skill | Open-source skills | 2026-09 | 2805 / 6054 star | Design skills launched around the same time, growing faster than this one |
Takeaway: the space is crowded, with players at tens of thousands to a hundred thousand-plus stars. This is a late entrant squeezing in, and 1000 stars is small for this category.
4. Where the users come from (evidence)
- Piggybacking on the upstream name (confirmed): the repo name and title both read "Open Design …", so anyone searching "Open Design" gets routed here, and the README's first line links to the upstream. The upstream was covered by TechTimes, XDA, Augment and others from 4 through June, went from 40k to 100k stars, and is the big IP in this niche.
- Driving traffic from comments under upstream complaint threads (confirmed): on r/LocalLLaMA's "OpenDesign is closinDesign. Now it forces you to create an account" (8-22 upvotes), the founder's account u/Extreme-Protection74 (handle IX, same as on GitHub) commented about 26 days ago: "Try Open Design Agent Kit which allows you use the Open Design directly in your coding agent". The same comment appears under r/SideProject's "Has anyone tried Open Design yet?" (Brave search snippet).
- Founder posting across multiple Reddit subreddits (confirmed the poster is the author; dates inferred from post IDs, roughly 10-23 to 10-26): r/ClaudeCode and r/claudeskills (about 113k members) posted "Open Design Agent Kit — Open Design's design skills to Claude Code" (tagged Built with Claude, with a video). r/opencode got the same post. r/ClaudeDesign and r/DesignSystems got "198 design systems, ready to drop into Claude Design (open source, free)". The timing falls just before stars took off from 4 (10-27 14, then 10-29 280).
- Automatic listings in skill / MCP directories (confirmed): claudemarketplaces.com (10-28 listings), Trendshift, the official MCP Registry → mcp-marketplace.io / funcoding.ai / odel.app / prismix, skillleaderboard, typingmind, awesomeclaudeplugins, agentflowshub, template0 and others. These sites auto-list projects and amplify them further.
- Deliberately recruiting contributors (confirmed): 10-25 opened a batch of
good first issuetickets (add Pinterest sizes, add print shops, make coffee menu examples...), then PRs came in from contributors in India and Vietnam, 10-29 and eltociear showed up, the account that files translation PRs on popular repos (adding a Japanese README). When it shows up, it usually means the repo has already been spotted on some charts. - Chinese X alt accounts (partly confirmed): @xiaoanlab (11-03), @CY160909 (10-31) and @li90549 (11-06) posted very similar Chinese recommendations ("Stuff 270 skills into Copilot and Claude Code, no app to install, no key to configure"), each with only 1–3 likes. The Trendshift page carries the Chinese tagline "Give your agent a full set of design abilities!" Whether these are the creator's alt accounts is unverified, and the volume is too small to be a main channel.
- Channels not found: HN (no related story in our library), major X accounts (not mentioned in our local library of 5 circles; a live search for "Open Design Agent Kit" over 30 days returned only 3 posts, all with single-digit likes), media, Product Hunt, and big YouTube channels (only the creator's own demo video).
5. Why it took off
- Big upstream name, and its reputation took a hit: Open Design has 100k stars. After August's forced login drew "cash-grab" criticism, some people wanted an Open Design that doesn't require login or a standalone app, and this repo is positioned exactly that way.
- The format matched the trend of autumn 2026: skills, plugins, and MCP were becoming a new way to distribute software (the Claude Code plugin marketplace,
npx skills add, and the MCP Registry all matured that year). "Install it into the agent you already use" sells better than "install another app." - Claude Design hook: converts 199 brand design systems into Claude Design's format, and Claude Design users can sync directly from this repo. This could stand alone as a post on r/ClaudeDesign. Syncing requires visiting the repo, which may explain the unusually high fork rate (98 forks, about 10%; the forks all keep the original description, which suggests they're being used as-is). Speculation, not verified.
- The founder pushed it personally on Reddit: after posts went up in several subreddits, stars climbed from 14 to 280 within two days. The timing lines up.
- Iteration density: 48 commits and 338 releases in 13 days, supporting VS Code / Claude Code / Claude Desktop / ChatGPT desktop / web connectors / Codex / Cursor, so people can get in through whichever entry point they use.
6. Differentiation
Versus upstream: no app to install, no background process, no separate model or key to configure; the output is ordinary files in the repo that you can diff and commit, and a prototype can be turned into a production component in the project with one click. Versus frontend-design, Impeccable and ui-ux-pro-max: it ships a full content library (brand design systems plus editable examples) and a complete pipeline of export, browser-render self-checks and critic review, not just a prompt. Is that why it took off? Partly. The "no app / no daemon / no key" line hits the frustration with upstream's forced login, and that's the hook for spreading. But all the content is upstream's, and upstream already supports skill / plugin / MCP modes. The moat is shallow, and the growth curve is already flattening (11-06 only +8).
7. How many people know about it
It's spreading in small circles: several Claude subreddits, plus a batch of automatically indexing directory sites. No media coverage, no big X accounts, no Hacker News. It doesn't make money (MIT, free), so there's no revenue to disclose.
8. Copycats
No obvious copycats. Someone is using it as a template library (Pedersen2k/design-starter, a Norwegian README calling it "a template repo preloaded with the Open Design Agent Kit"). A similar-idea project, OpenDesigner (73 stars), came out later, but we can't confirm it copied this one.
9. What to borrow
- Find a well-known open-source project that users resent (forced login, app installs, keys to configure), extract its content, and build a lightweight version that "installs into the agent you already use", keeping the original project's name in the title.
- Drop links in the complaint threads under the original project and in "has anyone used X?" posts, then publish one post in each relevant subreddit.
- Package one body of content in several formats (VS Code extension, Claude plugin, Codex skills, MCP, Claude Design design system). Each format can be listed in a directory, adding another entry point.
- Use good-first-issue labels to attract contributors and make the repo look alive.
10. Still unclear
- The direct source of the 10-27 to 10-29 surge: the exact dates and engagement of the Reddit posts can't be retrieved (Reddit blocks scraping), and we didn't find whether WeChat Official Accounts or Xiaohongshu promoted it.
- The quality of the star accounts (the stargazers endpoint was 404 these past few days).
- Whether the Chinese X account is the author's own network.
- Whether the high fork rate is due to the Claude Design sync.
