# Valve released an ARM build of SteamOS, and someone put it on a Mac first: steamac gained 2,200 stars in a month, mostly from others hyping it

**What it is** A free, open-source Mac app that runs Valve's official ARM SteamOS in a virtual machine, so Apple Silicon Macs can play Windows games from Steam.

**Why it took off** Valve had just released ARM SteamOS, and Mac players had no free option since Whisky stopped being maintained. "Official SteamOS running on a Mac" was news in itself, with frame rates to demo, and after ETA Prime's video the outlets kept covering it.

**B** **How you could follow it** Don't build another Mac version. Someone who knows the Linux graphics stack could bring official SteamOS to ARM devices nobody is serving yet (Snapdragon X laptops, RK3588 boards), with a download-and-run installer. Seed it with players first, then get hardware reviewers to film it.

B grade: the "official SteamOS on X" theme has already earned thousands of stars twice, on Mac and Android, and some devices are still unclaimed. But the barrier is kernel and GPU-driver level, the good spots are taken, and Valve could close the window itself. Publicly known / widely discussed

In September 2026, Valve published an ARM64 SteamOS image for its Steam Frame headset. Three weeks later, a GitHub account with only this one repo and 16 followers ran it in a virtual machine on Apple Silicon Macs and shipped it as a free app you can download and install. It barely promoted itself. The stars came from Reddit players, a YouTube hardware channel with 1.4M subscribers, and some twenty tech outlets. The Mac spot is taken, but the same wave has devices nobody has built for yet.

### The Oct 4 post

On 2026 Oct 4, the account fxgl created the repo steamac and posted about it on Reddit that day. The first line of the post was:

> I got Valve's official ARM64 SteamOS (the Steam Frame image) running on Apple Silicon: real Steam UI, Proton 11 + FEX, DX9–11 games on the Mac's GPU…

(I ran Valve's official ARM64 SteamOS, the Steam Frame build, on Apple Silicon: the real Steam UI, Proton 11 with FEX, DX9 to DX11 games running on the Mac's GPU.)

The account was registered in 2013 under the name Fx Games Development and has nothing else on it. The README is written in English, Russian, and Chinese, so the author is probably from a Russian-speaking region (inferred).

In Oct 31, YouTube hardware channel ETA Prime posted a video titled "SteamOS on a Mac?! This Actually Works!" By Nov 6 it had 334k views. In the video, an M4 Max ran The Witcher 3 at over 70 fps, Left 4 Dead 2 at over 200 fps, and Stellar Blade at 800p high settings at over 70 fps (as reported by VideoCardz). Over the next five days the repo gained 150 to 358 stars a day.

### What it is

The steamac build ships as the app FX Steam Launcher, open source under Apache-2.0, written in Swift. It starts a lightweight virtual machine on the Mac, built on libkrun. Inside the VM runs Valve's original SteamOS. The image downloads from Valve's servers and its signature is checked, and the system itself is untouched. Graphics go through Vulkan inside SteamOS, passed to the Mac via Venus and translated to Metal by MoltenVK. x86 Windows games run through SteamOS's built-in FEX translation and then Proton 11.

This is a different approach from earlier Mac options. CrossOver and Whisky run a Windows build of Steam on Wine inside macOS. steamac boots an official SteamOS: the Game Mode interface, Proton compatibility data, shader pre-caching, and official OTA updates and rollback are all Valve's own. The upside is that every compatibility improvement Valve makes carries over automatically.

The limits are stated clearly. Games with anti-cheat don't run. DX12 only goes up to feature level 12_0. It's best with at least 24GB of memory (ETA Prime's recommendation). Building from source needs about 150GB of disk space, Xcode, and Docker. An AppleInsider editor installed it this way and said "the Xcode build step is not for the faint of heart," but "the games I tried without anti-cheat ran very well."

### How the stars climbed

| Timeline | What happened | Stars (daily GitHub record) |
|---|---|---|
| around Sep 18 | Valve posts "Steam Frame Image" download on the Steam website | — |
| Oct 4 | Repo created; author posts the first Reddit thread | Starting point |
| Oct 17 | A r/SteamOS post: "You can now run pretty much any Steam game on Mac OS, thanks to Steamac"; a post with the same title on r/macgaming was removed by mods, and someone later posted asking why it was removed | 10-17 to 10-19:383 → 632 |
| Oct 20 to 31 | Plateau; players compile "games that work" lists on r/macgaming | +5 to +40 per day |
| Oct 31 | ETA Prime video goes live | 10-31:819 |
| Nov 1 to 5 | Over twenty outlets follow, including GadgetPilipinas, AppleInsider, VideoCardz, PC Gamer, Notebookcheck, TweakTown, and HotHardware | Daily +154, +238, +193, +358, +299 |
| Nov 6 | — | 2,206,fork 85 |

Stars rose 1,393 in the last 7 days, and only 147 in the first 7 days. Downloads were also substantial: all releases combined come to about 17k downloads, with v1.9.8 and v1.9.9 at about 3,000 each (GitHub Releases, 11-06), the same order of magnitude as the stars.

The author's own promotion was limited to three things: the Reddit post on the day the repo was created, a project homepage in three languages (with real footage on the front page), and the trilingual README. One post on Hacker News got only 1 points, and I found no substantial discussion on X (unverified). Growth came almost entirely from others: first the Reddit player communities, then big YouTube channels, then tech outlets picking it up in a chain.

### Why this one

**The platform owner just opened a door.** Running Windows games on ARM devices takes a whole compatibility stack that nobody had been maintaining. Valve is now maintaining it and has made it public. Once the door opened, ports clustered from late September to early October: DroidDeck on Android phones (repo created 9-24, now 18,059 stars), SteamOS-ARM-Port on Snapdragon handhelds (339 stars), and on the Mac, steamac.

**Mac players had been missing this for a long time.** Whisky, the open-source and free option, stopped being maintained in April 2025. Its website told people to go buy CrossOver, which costs $74 and up. PC Gamer and VideoCardz headlines said the same thing: SteamOS finally on Mac.

**One sentence is already a headline.** "Valve's official SteamOS running on a Mac" can be used as a headline as is. "Yet another Wine front end" would not get this coverage.

**There are hard numbers to show.** Frame rates can be measured and screenshotted, and that's what makes a big channel willing to do a dedicated episode.

**The team could handle the traffic spike.** In the 4 days after the video, they shipped 8 releases. When Valve's SteamOS 0.6.0 preview pushed in Nov 2 broke the GPU, v1.9.8 fixed it the same day, and VideoCardz wrote a dedicated "fixed" article. That was another round of coverage.

### Who's competing for this spot

| Plan | How | Compared with steamac |
|---|---|---|
| CrossOver | Commercial software, Wine + D3DMetal, from $74 | The established paid option for running Windows games on Mac; installs a Windows build of Steam |
| Whisky | Open-source Wine wrapper, 15,068 stars | 2025-04 stopped being maintained; the open-source, free slot sat empty for a year and a half |
| Parallels + Windows on ARM | Full Windows stack with translation, subscription model | Heavy and expensive; AppleInsider comments include Parallels users asking whether to switch |
| UTM | General-purpose virtual machine, 36,716 stars | GPU acceleration is weak when running Linux in it; no ready-made SteamOS setup |
| Cloud gaming such as GeForce NOW | Subscription, requires internet | Latency; not running locally |

As of Nov 6, it was the only option for running official SteamOS on a Mac. Copycats in the Mac space were also scarce: the closest on GitHub, Scrumpper/Steam-ARM, has only 15 stars and does something different, running the ARM Steam client from Steam Frame directly on the host.

### How you could still follow it

**Don't bother building another Mac version.** The spot is taken, the press has already covered it, and it iterates fast on Valve's own update channel. Latecomers will struggle to come up with a new headline.

**Build for a different device. There are still openings, but they're closing fast.** The pattern from this wave is clear: "official SteamOS on X" can hit big if X has a group of players nobody is serving. Android has been taken by DroidDeck and Snapdragon handhelds have people working on them. These are still empty or just starting:

- Snapdragon X Windows laptops: a post on r/snapdragon says someone got it running on an HP OmniBook, and permissionBRICK/snaptop-linux on GitHub has only 7 stars. Nobody has yet made a download-and-run version.

- RK3588 dev boards and Raspberry Pi: people on Armbian, Radxa, and Raspberry Pi forums have posted installers for the ARM Steam client, but they only install the client, not full SteamOS, and there's no solid GitHub project (inferred; I only checked the forums).

- ARM Chromebooks and ARM tablets that can run Linux: I found no one doing this (unverified).

The catch is the high barrier. steamac built its own kernel, Mesa, and the GPU forwarding layer, and people who don't know the Linux graphics stack can't reproduce that. Valve could also roll ARM SteamOS out to more devices officially, which would wipe these openings out.

**Fill the gap steamac left.** The first comment on AppleInsider asks "which games can I play," and players on r/macgaming are already compiling "games that work" lists themselves. An ARM SteamOS compatibility database (similar to ProtonDB, with frame rates and issues separated by chip and memory) would be useful to users of every ARM port project, and it's far less technically demanding. The downside is that it won't get the headline exposure of "SteamOS on a Mac" and will grow slowly (inferred).

### If it were you

**Verdict:** The Mac slot is already taken. This wave still has one or two openings on other ARM devices, but only someone who can write Linux graphics code can take them, and Valve could close the window itself.

**Who it suits:** developers who have worked on Mesa, Vulkan, virtualization, or embedded Linux, who have an ARM device nobody has ported to yet (a Snapdragon X laptop, an RK3588 board), and who can ship a download-and-run version within a month or two.

**Who it doesn't suit:** anyone who wants to build another Mac version; anyone who won't touch the kernel or GPU drivers and only wants a front-end wrapper; anyone planning to modify the SteamOS image and redistribute it (Valve's license forbids altering the image or making derivative works. steamac survives because it doesn't redistribute the image or change the system).

**How to do it:** follow steamac's model. Name the project directly "official SteamOS on X". Don't modify Valve's system; download the image from Valve's servers and verify the signature. Always provide an installer ordinary people can download and run. Put real footage on the homepage and clearly list frame rates for popular games on each device, so reviewers can cite them directly.

**How to get users** : Post in the device's player communities first (the matching subreddit, forums), and open with what runs and at what frame rate. Then go after YouTube creators who do hardware reviews. steamac and DroidDeck both took off after one video. Press follows the video. HN and X did little for this kind of project. In the week traffic came in, ship fixes every day. "Fixed it" is news in itself.

**When: before** early 2027. This wave was kicked off when Valve released the September image, and people piled into October. Later, either every device already had someone on it, or Valve would step in (inference).

**What would mean we got it wrong** : ① Valve announces official support for Mac or Snapdragon laptops, or a SteamOS update breaks these VMs and ports outright; ② steamac is gaining only a dozen or so stars a day a month after the media wave, which would mean the buzz was mostly novelty and copying the approach to other devices wouldn't pull this much; ③ the reverse: if a port for a Snapdragon X laptop gets a video from a big hardware channel and passes 1,000 stars before December, the gap is real and still open.

## fxgl/steamac (FX Steam Launcher): why it works

> Research date 2026-11-06. Sources: our GitHub database (repo_profile / repo_day), the GitHub Releases API, and web pages (sources cited inline).

### One line

On Apple Silicon Macs, runs **Valve's official ARM64 SteamOS (the image from the Steam Frame headset)** in a lightweight libkrun VM. The graphics path is Venus → MoltenVK/KosmicKrisp → Metal, and x86 games go to SteamOS's built-in FEX + Proton 11. Packaged as the free DMG app "FX Steam Launcher", open source under Apache-2.0.

**Bottom line:** It's the first working Mac-side result of Valve releasing ARM64 SteamOS. Stars came from two waves of outside exposure: 10-17's Reddit post and ETA Prime's YouTube video from 10-31 (334k views in a week). In the two or three days after the video, more than twenty outlets, including AppleInsider, PC Gamer and VideoCardz, followed, and stars went from 11-01 to 11-06, roughly 1,390 more. Its difference is the full official SteamOS plus Valve's update channel, not the Wine-wrapper approach of CrossOver or Whisky. That is the core reason it took off: every headline said "SteamOS on a Mac".

- Repo created 2026-10-04. The author account fxgl (Fx Games Development) was registered 2013 years ago, with only this repo and 16 followers (GitHub API). No well-known author backing.

- Very frequent releases: over 30 days it went from v1.3 to v1.9.12, more than 30 versions in all, and 8 of them came in the days from 11-01 to 11-04. Total release-asset downloads are about 17k, with v1.9.8 and v1.9.9 at roughly 3,000 each (GitHub Releases API, 2026-11-06). Download counts are the same order as stars, which means many people are actually installing it, not just bookmarking it.

### 2. Timeline: where the stars came from

| Date | Event | Star changes |
|---|---|---|
| Around 2026-09-18 | Valve publicly released the ARM64 SteamOS used for the first Steam Frame (0.3.0). The Steam website offers "Download SteamOS: Steam Frame Image" (pcguide.com 2026-09-18; store.steampowered.com/steamos/download/?ver=steamframe). | — |

| 11-01 to 11-04 | A wave of media: GadgetPilipinas (11-01; Ground News lists it as first), Dirty Static, AppleInsider (11-02, the editor installed it himself), VideoCardz (11-02, cited ETA Prime's test data directly), iThinkDiff, TechEBlog, gamegpu, PC Gamer (11-03), HotHardware, tbreak, Notebookcheck, igor'sLAB, TweakTown, pcgameshardware.de, Frandroid, MacMagazine and others. A single Ground News aggregation alone had 12 articles. Takeaway: growth **came entirely from other people** . One wave came from the Reddit player communities, another from big YouTube hardware channels, and after the big channel, tech media kept reposting. HN didn't catch fire, and our X corpus found nothing (x-radar searched "steamac" and "SteamOS Mac"; both had 0 posts over 30–40 days). The author's own promotion was the single Reddit post on the day the repo was created, the project page (fxgl.github.io/steamac, in English, Russian and Chinese, with a real-footage video on the homepage), and a three-language README.

### 3. Competitors: playing Windows/Steam games on a Mac

|---|---|---|---|---|
| CrossOver(CodeWeavers) | Commercial software | Many years ago; 26.3 edition 2026-07 | The standard commercial way to run Windows games on a Mac, from $74 | Uses Wine + D3DMetal and installs the Windows version of Steam. Paid. Not the SteamOS interface, and no Proton game-compatibility data. |
| Whisky | Open source | 2023-03 | 15,068 stars; 2025-04 no longer updated. The site says "go buy CrossOver" (Ars Technica 2025-04-21). | Also a Wine wrapper. Since it stopped updating, the open-source, free slot has stayed empty. |
| Sikarugir (successor to Kegworks) | Open source | 2024-08 | 3,995 star | Wine wrappers built per game. High effort, and not the full Steam experience. |

| Parallels Desktop + Windows on ARM | Commercial software | Many years ago | Subscription | Requires installing full Windows plus Prism translation. It's resource-heavy and costs money. Parallels users in the AppleInsider comments were asking whether to switch. |
| Steam's native macOS client | Big-company features | Many years ago | — | Only runs games that have a Mac version, and there are few of those. |
| Cloud gaming such as GeForce NOW | Other | — | Big | Needs an internet connection and a subscription, with lag. steamac runs locally. |
| UTM | Open source | 2019 | 36,716 star | A general-purpose VM. GPU acceleration under Linux is weak, and there's no ready-made SteamOS setup. |
| Asahi Linux / muvm | Open source | — | muvm 986 star | Requires a native dual-boot install, which M3 and later chips don't support. muvm uses libkrun like steamac, but only serves Asahi. |
| DroidDeck (same wave, Android side) | Open source | 2026-09-24 | 18,059 star | Different platform (Snapdragon phones). It shows the "ARM SteamOS port" topic alone can blow up. It also took off because of a Retro Game Corps video. |
| hashtagbasit/SteamOS-ARM-Port, permissionBRICK/snaptop-linux | Open source | 2026-09/11 | 339 / 7 star | Also porting ARM SteamOS, but for Snapdragon handhelds and laptops, not Macs. |

The slot for "running official SteamOS on a Mac" **has no second working option** at the moment.

### 4. Why it took off

1. **A platform event opened the window.** In 2026 September, Valve released the ARM64 SteamOS image for the Steam Frame, with FEX x86 translation and ARM64 Proton built in. For the first time, the full compatibility stack needed to run Windows games on ARM devices is maintained by Valve officially. DroidDeck (Android), steamac (Mac) and SteamOS-ARM-Port (Snapdragon) all appeared in a cluster from late September to early October.

2. **Mac gamers have needed this for a long time.** Whisky stopped updating in 2025, CrossOver costs money, and r/macgaming keeps getting threads saying "Steam on Mac is terrible." PC Gamer and VideoCardz ran headlines saying "SteamOS finally comes to Mac."

3. **It really works, and the numbers are concrete.** ETA Prime tested it: on an M4 Max, Witcher 3 runs above 70 FPS, Left 4 Dead 2 above 200 FPS, and Stellar Blade above 70 FPS at 800p high settings (as reported by VideoCardz). An AppleInsider editor wrote that "every game we tried without anti-cheat ran." Visible benchmarks are what get creators to make videos.

4. **The barrier dropped to downloading one DMG.** Building from source takes 150GB of disk space, Xcode, and Docker, but the packaged release app just works: it pulls the image from Valve's servers, verifies signatures, and boots. That's why YouTube viewers could follow along, and 17k release downloads show it.

5. **It iterated fast and handled the traffic.** Within 4 days of the video there were 8 versions. When Valve pushed the SteamOS 0.6.0 preview and the GPU stopped starting, v1.9.8 fixed it the same day (11-02), and VideoCardz and NeoTeo covered the fix.

### 5. Differentiation

- Others run "Windows Steam on macOS via Wine." steamac runs an **unmodified official SteamOS on a Mac** : the Game Mode UI, Proton compatibility data, and Steam's own shader pre-caching, plus official A/B-partition OTA updates and rollback, all come from Valve untouched. Its changes live in a separate layer on top of the system (per the Dirty Static review).

- The upside: compatibility improves as Valve invests, so you don't have to fix games one by one yourself.

- That difference **is** why it got covered. "Valve's official SteamOS running on a Mac" is a news hook by itself, and every headline used it. "Yet another Wine frontend" would not have gotten this wave of coverage.

- Shortcomings: anti-cheat games don't run; DX12 tops out at feature level 12_0; 24GB of RAM is the minimum (ETA Prime's recommendation).

### 6. Visibility and copycats

- Visibility: **it got wide coverage.** ETA Prime's video has 330k views, and more than twenty outlets, including PC Gamer, AppleInsider, VideoCardz, and Notebookcheck, have written about it. But it's a free open-source project with no revenue involved. On X, our corpus shows no big accounts discussing it (unverified; x-radar coverage is limited).

- Copycats: the Mac direction doesn't have a serious clone yet. GitHub search turns up Scrumpper/Steam-ARM (15 stars), which ports the Steam Frame's ARM64 client to host machines. Same theme extended to other ARM devices: permissionBRICK/snaptop-linux (Snapdragon X laptops), SteamOS-ARM-Port, and DroidDeck.

### 7. What to borrow

- **Watch what the platform owner just officially released, and be the first to bring it to devices nobody is serving.** Valve only built ARM SteamOS for its own headset, so Mac and Android users are the big underserved demand.

- **Name the project and title it plainly as "official X running on Y"** , so outlets can use that as their headline directly.

- **Always ship a binary ordinary people can download directly** , since that's what gives big creators something to demo. Put real screen recordings on the homepage and list frame rates per hardware so reviewers and media can quote them directly.

- **During the days traffic arrives, ship releases and fix bugs frequently** , which keeps new visitors and generates another round of "fixed" coverage.

### 8. Uncertain

- The author's identity is unclear (the account was registered 2013 years ago, has only one repo, and the README has a Russian version, so the developer may be from the Russian-speaking world). The Tildes post carries a "claude" tag; whether AI was used heavily in development is unverified (the GitHub API was rate-limited at the time, so I didn't finish checking commit Co-Authored tags).

- The vote and comment counts on the two Reddit posts, 10-04 and 10-17, can't be retrieved (Reddit blocks scraping).

- Valve's EULA prohibits "modifying or making derivative works" of the Steam client image. steamac doesn't distribute the image or alter the rootfs, but whether Valve will act, and whether future SteamOS updates will break it, is uncertain (the 0.6.0 preview already broke it once).

- Whether users stick depends on DX12 and how well anti-cheat games are covered. Star growth will slow once the media wave passes.
