# Gained 128 stars in one day, a hundred of them bought: MixMusic's real traction is a single Facebook video

**What it is** An open-source desktop music player. One search queries both Spotify and YouTube Music, and songs from both go into the same queue and playlists, without Spotify Premium.

**Why it went viral** It didn't really: the 11-06 spike was mostly 11-05 batches of bot accounts starring it in a 6-hour window on 102. The real hundred-odd stars came from the author's Facebook video (6.9K views), reshares in Indonesian developer circles, and inclusion in the MyGo ecosystem list.

**C** **How you could follow this** Don't build the Nth music client. Copy the early-stage play of riding a newly launched hot framework: ship a polished, usable showcase app early, get listed in awesome lists, and aim for a retweet from the framework's author.

Grade C: most of the project's stars were bought, real distribution was just the author's own video, and the "Spotify + YouTube Music in one app" idea already has older projects with tens of thousands of stars plus several newer followers. What's worth learning is the showcase-app playbook for new frameworks, but copying this particular project isn't worth it. Few people know about it yet

Data 2026-10-21 → 2026-11-08 (19 days, 18 observations). Points before 10-28 come from deeply / archive backfill, not every day has one

Starting on the afternoon of Nov 5, 2026 (UTC 11:26), an open-source music player called MixMusic began gaining one star every 5 minutes. Three and a half hours later the pace suddenly sped up to one every 30 seconds to 2 minutes, then stopped at 17:34, for 102 stars total over 6 hours. The starring accounts were `freeearnwithme31-max`, `hiraakhan491-bot`, and `aizazohan068-lgtm`, mostly with zero followers and freshly registered. The next day its GitHub stars rose 128 in a day, which looks like a sudden breakout. Remove the bought part and what's left is a beautifully built project by one Indonesian developer, written in 19 days with AI help, plus a 6,900-view Facebook video. The idea is good, but it hasn't actually taken off.

### What it is

A desktop music player that runs on macOS, Windows, and Linux. Search once and it queries YouTube Music and Spotify together, labeling each result by source. One playback queue and one playlist can mix tracks from both. YouTube Music needs no login; Spotify tracks can play through Spotify Connect or be swapped for the same song's recording on YouTube Music, so Premium isn't required.

The author fzn0x explained the origin plainly in a Facebook post: "Tired of switching between two apps, and some songs aren't on Spotify." The feature list is long: synced lyrics (with romanization and translation), a 10-band equalizer, crossfade, Last.fm, Discord status, offline caching, a mini player, a command palette, 14 themes, plus a theme and plugin marketplace.

It's written in Go on top of MyGo, a desktop framework egoist released at the end of September. Early versions used the system WebView (the author's post said the Windows installer was about 5 MB and used about 150 MB of memory during playback). In 10-22, 0.5.0 switched to MyGo's native GPU rendering, and the README now says "about 64MB of memory."

From the commit history: the repo is 19 days old, with 529 commits, over 300 PRs and 16 releases (v0.1.0 to v0.5.9), and he's the only contributor. At this pace, my inference is that AI wrote most of it.

### How the stars grew

| Date | Stars (GitHub, per day) | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| 10-18 | 0 | Created the repo, released v0.1.0 |
| 10-20 | — | The author posted an introduction video on his Facebook page "Midori": 6.9K views, 176 likes, 64 comments |
| 10-21 | 84 | The stars in the first three days mostly came from this video (inferred) |
| 10-22 – 11-01 | 89 → 128 | Gained 1–9 per day, normal organic growth; Indonesian page Jarfyou reshared it 10-23 |
| 11-02 | 174 | +46, three releases shipped the same day |
| 11-03 | 198 | +24 |
| 11-04 | 203 | Listed by Awesome MyGo |
| 11-05 | 167 | **−36** |
| 11-06 | 295 | **+128** , mostly from the 102 accounts from the previous afternoon |

Of the 11-05 batch, 91 accounts could be opened; 59 had zero followers, 22 were registered after September, and one was registered that same day. Another 11 have already been removed by GitHub. Most usernames follow GitHub's auto-suggested "name + number + -bot / -lgtm / -cpu" pattern, and the names cluster around Pakistan and Bangladesh. Spot-checking one, it had starred 100 unrelated repos, from Binance trading bots to Wine graphics layers, which is what "star for pay" task accounts do.

The 11-05 loss of 36 stars looks like GitHub cleaning up fake stars from the previous batch (the +70 on 11-02 and 11-03), but the breakdown for those days is no longer visible; unverified. Who placed the orders can't be determined.

Real usage is better measured by other numbers: the installers across 16 releases have about 3,155 downloads total (including repeat downloads from auto-update); outside users have opened only 1 issues, mostly to notify about list inclusion; and there are 5 forks. Subtracting the bought stars, organic stars are roughly a hundred-plus.

### Where real users came from

Only two places.

First, the author's own Facebook. The video's copy has three sentences of selling points: one player for two services' songs, no Spotify Premium needed, and written in Go, not Electron. The reshares were mostly from Indonesian developer pages, and the README has an Indonesian version too. The few later stars that look like real people (with followers and repos) are also mostly Indonesian.

Second, the MyGo ecosystem is giving it a tailwind. MyGo is now 4,797 stars, gaining 1,119 in 7 days on GitHub (11-06). There are tutorials on V2EX and CSDN, and Awesome MyGo 11-04 added MixMusic. But the lift is limited. Meiro, a YouTube Music client by an Indonesian author on the same framework, stopped growing after a single-day +138 burst at 10-29 and now sits at 297 stars. The one in this ecosystem that really caught traffic is mygo-cloudmusic, a NetEase Cloud Music client by the MyGo author himself. The repo was created 10-25, has 801 stars, and gained +453 in 7 days, riding the Chinese-speaking audience.

Searches found no mention of it on Hacker News, Reddit, X, or tech media.

### Who else is doing the same thing

| Project | Scale | How it differs from MixMusic |
|---|---|---|
| Spotube | 30k+ stars (unverified) | Spotify catalog and YouTube audio, no Premium required; written in Flutter |
| Pear Desktop (formerly th-ch/youtube-music) | 33,987 stars | Electron wrapping a web page plus plugins, YouTube Music only |
| psst | 9,508 stars | Native Rust Spotify client, requires Premium |
| ytmdesktop | 6,717 stars | Electron, YouTube Music only |
| kaset / limusic | 2,507 / 1,823 stars | Native Swift and Rust YouTube Music clients; limusic gained +374 in 7 days |
| Stash / Meld / YumaPlayer | Stash has 1,560 stars; the last two got media coverage | The "Spotify + YouTube Music in one app" idea on Android has all appeared this year |
| mygo-cloudmusic / Meiro / MySpotify | 801 / 297 / 31 stars | Same MyGo framework, each building a client for one music service |
| Soundiiz / TuneMyMusic | Web, built for years | Syncs playlists between the two services, no playback |

Among open-source desktop players, having both services plugged in and mixed in one queue is genuinely rare, and that's its real differentiator. But the idea is easy to copy: on Android, 10–November alone saw three in development.

### What to take away

- **Right when a new framework drops, ship a solid demo app early.** Framework authors and the community need "look, here's what you can build with it" examples, and getting into ecosystem lists and getting reshared is the cheapest distribution there is. In this MyGo round, the apps with the most stars were exactly this kind of demo.

- **"Merge two services into one, no subscription needed" is a hook you can explain in one sentence.**

- **Polish the front door, but polish alone won't get you distribution.** MixMusic has a complete README, docs site, multiple languages, and a theme marketplace, but its real distribution was a single video the author posted himself. It never got into English developer circles.

- **Buying stars isn't worth it.** GitHub cleans them up. This time it already dropped 36 stars and deleted 11 accounts. Anyone glancing at the star list can tell.

### If it were you

**One-line verdict** : don't clone yet another music client. What's worth borrowing is the play of "building a useful demo app early, while the new framework is still fresh."

- **Who it suits** : developers who chase new frameworks and runtimes and can ship a complete, usable app within a week or two of a framework's release. Ideally someone who can run community outreach in Chinese or English, since traffic for these frameworks concentrates there.

- **Who it doesn't suit** : anyone counting on the "Spotify + YouTube Music in one app" idea alone to earn stars. The concept is old, several similar projects already have tens of thousands of stars, and both services could change their APIs or send legal letters, so the author would have to keep maintaining it.

- **How to do it** : watch for frameworks that just launched, are gaining stars fast, and still lack solid demos. Pick an app people use daily with good screenshots (music, notes, a git client, a downloader). Keeping the feature set small is fine, but it must be installable, usable, and ship with installers. State in the README that it's "built with X," and compare it with Electron on memory use. Developers love sharing numbers like that.

- **How to get users** : proactively open PRs to the framework's awesome lists, and post your work in the framework's discussions and issues to get the framework author to reshare it. For Chinese frameworks, post on V2EX and Juejin; for English ones, try Show HN and subreddits like r/golang. Post a short demo video on your own social accounts. For MixMusic, that one video brought in most of the real stars.

- **When is "before" the right time** : the first month or two after the framework launches. MyGo launched at the end of September, and by November similar demos were piling up, with four or five music-player projects already out there.

- **What signals you've misread it** : if your project is in an awesome list and has been posted to community threads, but organic stars are still under a hundred after two weeks, the framework's buzz isn't strong enough to carry side projects, or the niche you picked is already taken. Switch frameworks, or pick an app category in the ecosystem that's still empty.

Where users come from

- **Verified** **Star-farming (bulk accounts)** : GitHub event stream: 11-05 UTC 11:26–17:34, 102 WatchEvents in total. First 5 every 1 minutes, then 30 every 2 seconds to 1 minutes. Of the 91 accounts still around, 59 have zero followers, 22 were registered after 2026-09, and 11 have since been deleted. One account, freeearnwithme31-max, starred 100 unrelated repos.

- **Verified** **Author's own Facebook page video** : a short intro video posted on the "Midori" page on 10-20, with 6.9K views, 176 likes, and 64 comments. The repo already had 84 stars three days after creation.

## Why MixMusic (fzn0x/mixmusic) took off

> Research date 2026-11-06. Data sources: our github repo (repo_profile / repo_day), the hackernews repo, GitHub API (repos, releases, event stream, user profiles), Jina / Exa / Brave search, and public Facebook pages.

### Bottom line

**It didn't really take off.** The "11-06 +128 stars in a single day" spike that triggered the recall was mostly about 11-05 UTC 11:26–17:34, when roughly 102 stars poured in over those 6 hours, and they were almost certainly bought. Of the 91 accounts still around, 59 have zero followers, 22 were registered after 2026-09, and 11 have already been deleted by GitHub. The usernames are clearly bulk-created (`freeearnwithme31-max`, `hiraakhan491-bot`, `aizazohan068-lgtm`, and so on). The first half arrived at about 1 every 5 minutes, and the second half at 1 every 30 seconds to 1 minutes. The day before (11-05 snapshot) it lost 36 stars, which looks like GitHub cleaning up the fake stars from the previous batch (11-02/03, +70). The real part is small. The author posted a short video on his own Facebook page, "Midori" (6.9K views, 176 likes), which spread a little in Indonesian developer circles. It was also built on MyGo, a Go desktop framework that's trending right now, and got added to the Awesome MyGo ecosystem list. The genuine traction looks like this: three weeks since launch, a little over a hundred organic stars, and roughly 3,100 downloads of its releases to date.

### 1. What it is

- A desktop music player (macOS / Windows / Linux). One search queries both YouTube Music and Spotify. There's one playback queue, and a playlist can mix tracks from both. YouTube Music plays without logging in. Spotify tracks can use Spotify Connect, or be swapped for the same song on YouTube Music, so no Premium is needed (README, github.com/fzn0x/mixmusic).

- Written in Go on egoist's MyGo framework. Versions 0.1–0.4 used the system WebView. From 0.5.0 (10-22) on, it switched to MyGo's native GPU-rendered UI with no browser bundled, which is why it advertises "about 64MB of memory" (CHANGELOG; data card description).

- Very full-featured: synced lyrics (with romaji and translation), a 10-band equalizer, crossfade, Last.fm, Discord status, offline caching, a mini player, 4 layouts and 14 themes, a theme/plugin marketplace, and a command palette.

- The author is fzn0x ("f (x)", founder of Midori Research, with 651 GitHub followers). The README has an Indonesian version, and most of the Facebook reshares came from Indonesian accounts, so he's likely an Indonesian developer.

- A solo project: 19 days from repo creation to 529 commits and 300+ PRs, with only him in the contributors list, plus 16 releases (v0.1.0 → v0.5.9). That pace is pretty much only possible with AI-assisted coding.

### 2. Star curve and what's real

| Date | star | Gained that day | What happened |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10-18 | 0 | | Repo created, v0.1.0 |
| 10-20 | | | The author posted an intro video on his Facebook "Midori" page: 6.9K views, 176 likes, 64 comments |
| 10-21 | 84 | | First observed by us. The 3 stars in the first 84 days mostly came from this post (inferred). |
| 10-22 – 11-01 | 89 → 128 | 1–9 per day | Normal organic growth; 10-23 Indonesian pages like Jarfyou reposting it |
| 11-02 | 174 | +46 | Released v0.5.6, v0.5.7, and v0.5.8 on the same day |
| 11-03 | 198 | +24 | |
| 11-04 | 203 | +5 | Added to Awesome MyGo (the page says "Added Nov 4") |
| 11-05 | 167 | **−36** | Star count dropped, which looks like GitHub cleaning up fake stars |
| 11-06 | 295 | **+128** | The bulk of it came from 11-05 afternoon's 6-hour burst of 102 bulk accounts |

(From the github repo's repo_day. The GitHub API now shows 302 stars, 5 forks, and 1 watchers.)

**Evidence for the 11-05 star batch** (GitHub event stream `repos/fzn0x/mixmusic/events`, with each account's profile checked individually):

- From UTC 11:26–15:03, roughly 1 stars every 5 minutes (the classic "slow drip"). Between 15:13 and 17:34 it sped up to 30 every 2 seconds to 1 minutes. 102 stars in total over those 6 hours.

- Of the 91 accounts we could check: 59 have zero followers, 22 were registered after 2026-09 (one, `demonrd66-lab`, was registered that same day). Another 11 have since been 404 (suspended or deleted).

- Many usernames follow GitHub's auto-suggested pattern of "name + number + -hub / -cpu / -art / -svg / -lgtm / -bot / -code / -ship-it." Geographically they cluster in Pakistan and Bangladesh (`aliraza42458compk-prog`, `shehryarkhan145628-cell`, `mdkausarhossain2-sudo`, and so on).

- Spot-checking `freeearnwithme31-max`: it starred 100 completely unrelated repos (a Wine Metal graphics layer, a Binance bot, an LMS, AI APIs, and more). mixmusic is just one of them. It's an account doing "star for pay" tasks.

- After 17:34, a handful of accounts look like real people (`far-id`, `rezalastana` (Indonesia), `latiefahmad` (Malang), `vanirvan`, and others, with followers and repos), arriving about one every few hours.

**Judgment** : the 11-06 surge was star-farming, not someone resharing it. We can't trace who placed the order (the author himself, friends, or a star-exchange service are all possible), but it's almost certain the stars are fake. The event stream for the 11-02/03 +70 stars can no longer be pulled back (only the most recent 300 events are returned). Combined with the −36 drop on 11-05, it's a guess that part of the previous batch was purged, **unverified** .

**Real usage** : the installers across 16 releases have been downloaded about 3,155 times in total (GitHub's download_count, which includes repeat downloads from auto-updates). Only 1 issues came from outside users (houko notified about the Awesome MyGo listing). All the other issues and PRs were opened by the author. It has 5 forks, two of them by Indonesian developers (taqiin/mixmusic and danususyanto02/mixmusic-web).

### 3. Competitors

| Product | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs from MixMusic |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spotube(KRTirtho/spotube) | Open source, desktop + Android | 2022 | Over 30k stars (from memory, unverified) | Uses Spotify's metadata and pulls audio from places like YouTube, so no Premium is needed. Written in Flutter. MixMusic connects both services and mixes them in one queue. |
| Pear Desktop (formerly th-ch/youtube-music) | Open-source desktop | 2019 | 33,987 stars | Electron wrapper around the YouTube Music web app, plus plugins. Covers only YouTube Music. |
| ytmdesktop | Open-source desktop | 2018 | 6,717 stars | Electron, YouTube Music only |
| psst | Open-source desktop | 2020 | 9,508 stars | Native Rust Spotify client. Requires Premium. |
| limusic(SimoHypers) | Open-source desktop | 2026-07 | 1,823 stars, +7 in 374 days | Native Rust YouTube Music client. Covers only one service. |
| kaset | Open-source macOS | 2025-12 | 2,507 stars | Swift native, YouTube / YouTube Music only |
| Meiro(elianiva/meiro) | Open-source desktop, also built on MyGo | 2026-10-08 | 297 stars (10-29 +138 in one day, then it stalled) | A lightweight YouTube Music client by an author in the same framework and same country (Indonesia), 10 days before MixMusic; no Spotify support |
| egoist/mygo-cloudmusic | Open-source desktop, made by the MyGo author himself | 2026-10-25 | 801 stars, +7 in 453 days | MyGo demo app, a NetEase Cloud Music client; its real traction shows the MyGo ecosystem's traffic is mostly in the Chinese-speaking world |
| MySpotify(margbug01) | Open-source Windows, MyGo | 2026-10-26 | 31 stars | A MyGo-built Spotify client that plays full tracks even on free accounts |
| Stash(rawnaldclark) | Open-source Android | 2026-03 | 1,560 stars | Spotify + YouTube Music catalogs combined with daily recommendations, mobile |
| Meld / YumaPlayer | Android | 2026-10 / 11 | Covered by media (GlobeWire 11-03, DevTrends 10-13) | An Android Spotify + YouTube Music combined player, the same idea as MixMusic |
| BitChord / Metrolist / SimpMusic, etc. | Open-source Android / cross-platform | 2023–2026 | 5k–14k stars | YouTube Music only |
| Soundiiz / TuneMyMusic | Web | Years | Big | Syncs playlists between the two services, no playback |
| Official Spotify and YouTube Music clients | big tech | — | huge | Each covers only its own service; they can't be mixed. |

**Verdict** : "one player that plays both Spotify and YouTube Music" is indeed rare in open-source desktop (most only support one service), and that's its real differentiator. But on Android the same idea has already produced at least three (Stash, Meld, YumaPlayer) from 2026 through 10–November, and the idea itself is not hard to copy.

### 4. How users arrived

1. **The author's own Facebook page / short videos** (confirmed): the "Midori" page posted an introductory short video on 10-20, with 6.9K views, 176 likes, and 64 comments. The copy reads: "Sick of switching between two apps," "no Spotify Premium needed," "written in Go, not Electron." The Indonesian page Jarfyou 10-23 reshared a video (the original post text isn't accessible), and "Shu Kurogane" posted "[_Re]Introducing MixMusic (0.5.0)." The 84 stars in the first three days after the repo was created, and the later batch of Indonesian real-person stars, most likely came from here.

2. **The MyGo ecosystem tailwind** (confirmed, but small effect): egoist/mygo launched at the end of September, now 4,797 stars, 7 days +1,119, with tutorials on V2EX and CSDN. Awesome MyGo 11-04 lists MixMusic, the README got a badge, and Trendshift's music-player topic page also picked it up. But Meiro, built on the same framework, only trended for a day, suggesting "built with MyGo" as an identity brings at most dozens of stars.

3. **Star inflation** (largely confirmed): 11-05 of those 102, see section 2.

4. **Not found** : HN (our hackernews database has no Show HN for it), Reddit, X (x-radar corpus searches for mixmusic / fzn0x return 0), tech media, YouTube (API daily quota ran out, couldn't check), Product Hunt.

### 5. Why it took off (and why it didn't really)

- The idea is real: many people's playlists are split between Spotify and YouTube Music, and the author's own pain point, "songs not on Spotify have to be played on YouTube Music," is widely shared. The hook "play Spotify tracks without Premium" (by swapping in the same song from YouTube Music) is very direct.

- It rode MyGo's buzz, plus the selling points developers like: "lightweight, not Electron, 64MB of memory."

- Iteration was startlingly fast (19 versions and 16 commits in 529 days), with README, docs site, multiple languages, and a theme marketplace all in place, so the front door looks complete.

- But real distribution was a single post on the author's own Facebook. It never entered the English developer circles (HN, Reddit, X are all zero), and the acceleration curve in the recall was manufactured.

### 6. How many people know about it

- **Few people know about it** : no media coverage, no big accounts sharing it, and HN, Reddit, X searches return nothing; only the author's Facebook, a few Indonesian pages, and the Awesome MyGo list. It's open-source and free, so there's no revenue to speak of.

- Copycats: none directly copying it yet. The same "Spotify + YouTube Music in one" idea already has several separate Android builds (Stash, Meld, YumaPlayer), and the MyGo ecosystem also has MySpotify, a Spotify-only client.

### 7. What to borrow

- **Ship a solid demo app early after a new framework launches** : when MyGo first came out, writing a genuinely useful app with it (a music player, a git client) gets you listed in the ecosystem and shared by the framework author and community (mygo-cloudmusic gained 7 days +453, peek, and MyGit all came this way).

- **"Merge two services into one" is an easy hook** : a pain point you can explain in one sentence, plus "no paid membership required."

- Cautionary example: bought stars get purged (11-05's −36, and 11 accounts already deleted), and they also mislead recall systems like ours that watch star velocity. Star curves must be read alongside account quality in the event stream.

### 8. Still unclear

- Who ordered the star purchase (the author himself or a third party) can't be determined.

- Whether 11-02/03's +70 was real: the event stream doesn't reach back that far, so the −36 on 11-05 is the only evidence that part of it was purged.

- Whether any YouTube review videos drove traffic: the YouTube Data API search quota ran out for the day, so it couldn't be checked (Brave found a video titled "Top 5 YouTube Music & Spotify Clients for Linux"; whether it features MixMusic is unverified).

- Real active user count: about 3,155 Release downloads (including updates), and the app itself has no telemetry.
