A classic game with no PC version gets a native PC port 17 days later: PrimeRecomp and this wave of "console game recompilation"
What it is An open-source project that translates the Switch game *Metroid Prime Remastered* into a full PC program. Players use their own game files to play it natively on Windows, Mac, Linux and Steam Deck.
Why it blew up Oct 8: LASRecomp had just shown that Switch games could be recompiled for PC. 17 days later, someone applied the same toolchain to a famous game that fans had wanted for years and that never got an official PC port. It shipped with mouse aiming, 120 fps, HDR and other things PC players ask for, updated every two or three days, and spread through X, Reddit and retro gaming YouTube channels.
CHow to act on it Stop cloning Metroid and Zelda: find a famous game with no official PC port that players have called out in the reviews, ship a playable version first on an existing base, then fix one complaint players can actually feel per release, and write the README as a changelog to feed YouTube and Reddit.

Someone took a freshly released Switch recompilation toolchain and applied it to *Metroid Prime Remastered*. In 12 days they shipped 7 versions that run natively on Windows, Mac, Linux and Steam Deck, without an emulator. The repo has about two hundred stars, but over eight thousand downloads. Below: what it is, why it appeared now, where the people came from, and whether building a project that gets similar stars is worth the effort.
One tweet and two replies
Oct 26 2026, morning: the game news account Pixel Cherry Ninja posted on X: "Metroid Prime Remastered native port for Windows and Linux enters early testing. Game code statically recompiled from ARM64 to C. Supports mouse aiming, up to 8K, ultrawide, 30/60/120 fps and a Steam Deck preset. v0.0.3." Below it was the GitHub link gminustwo/primerecomp. The repo had been created the day before.
The replies are telling. One read: "The Wii pointer aiming spoiled my taste for Prime. 120 fps mouse aiming might finally fill that gap." Another asked: "No Apple silicon Mac build?"
Later releases covered both. A Mac (Apple silicon) build shipped, and v0.0.5 added Wii Remote pointer aiming. The next day (10-27) the repo had 64 stars.
What it is
The project statically translates the program code of Nintendo's 2023 Switch game *Metroid Prime Remastered* to C ahead of time, then compiles it into a PC program. System services and the graphics interface are rewritten for PC (graphics use Vulkan). The repo contains no game files. The second paragraph of the README says you need your own game dump in 1.0.0 format, and the first launch on your machine builds the game.
It wasn't written from scratch. The first screen of the README has a prominent notice: almost everything that makes it work (the recompiler that converts Switch code to C, the system kernel and services, the graphics renderer, audio, input, the boot screen) comes from LASRecomp, which Oct 8 published as a Switch recompilation of *Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom*. It adds "please also star LAS Recomp." PrimeRecomp adapts that work to Prime.
Why now
Three things converged.
A famous game with nothing on PC. Prime Remastered is widely seen as the peak of the series, and Nintendo never released a PC version. A commenter on the LASRecomp YouTube demo named it directly: "Recompiling Prime Remastered would be amazing... we also need a VR mod." The PrimeRecomp README's only planned item is VR.
The toolchain had just been proven. Before LASRecomp came out in Oct 8, "Switch games can be statically recompiled" was just a claim. 17 days later PrimeRecomp shipped a playable version. The base being ready is what made 12 days and 7 releases possible (v0.0.1 10-25 to v0.0.7 11-06, GitHub).
It delivers what PC players want, not just "it runs." Mouse turning for aiming like a PC shooter, 8K, ultrawide that pushes the HUD to the edges, 120 fps, HDR, gyro aiming, Wii Remote pointing, DualSense HD rumble, skippable cutscenes, and a cheat menu (hints that the game gives after 15–40 minutes are shortened to one second). Emulators can't provide these, or only with a lot of tuning.
Each release gives people a reason to come back
The README is itself a player-facing changelog. Each release has a one-line title, followed by changes people can feel:
| Version | Title (paraphrased from the README) | Whose complaint it addresses |
|---|---|---|
| v0.0.3 | Steam Deck performance | Deck originally managed about 25 fps |
| v0.0.4 | Smoother door transitions | Worst frame during door transitions cut from 293 ms to under 20 ms |
| v0.0.5 | Wii Remote, HDR, button icons | People who wanted Wii pointing in the tweet replies |
| v0.0.6 | Stick deadzone, flick-turning, gun FOV | Controller players |
| v0.0.7 | Reads NSP/XCI directly, emulator mods and saves | People already playing the game in Ryujinx / yuzu |
The last one is the cleverest. It doesn't unpack anything and reads the original game files directly. Mods and cheat codes made for Ryujinx and yuzu work, and saves can be moved over from the emulator. A long-time emulator user can switch in a few minutes.
Download counts followed the releases: v0.0.6 2,759 downloads, v0.0.5 1,805, and v0.0.7 got 643 in half a day. The seven releases total about 8,000 downloads, roughly 36 times the star count (GitHub releases, 11-06; the same person can download repeatedly, so this isn't unique users). The audience is mostly players, not developers.
Where the users come from
- The X game news account: the 10-26 post from the opening. The first wave came in two days after the repo was created.
- Reddit r/decomps and r/recomps: "PrimeRecomp: native PC port of Prime Remastered based on LASRecomp, 4K 60/120 fps" got repeatedly shared, along with "the PC port of Prime keeps getting better" and shader-stutter comparison threads (post engagement not verified).
- YouTube retro gaming channel: Video Game Esoterica (89k subscribers) posted "Metroid Prime Remastered Recomp Out NOW! And Updated!" on 11-05. The opening line of the description reads "another 100% playable Switch recomp is out", and it pulled about 18k views in a day. The next day the repo gained 39 stars, its biggest single-day gain since it was created (GitHub, 11-06).
- Recomp aggregator sites: RecompLauncher (11-02), gamerbrowser (10-30), and a site listing 237 "recomp games for PC" all link to it. Sites like these only appeared this month to capture recomp search traffic.
- Chinese resource sites: several outfits bundle a Switch520 game with a porting tool v0.0.3 into a 13.8GB "PC no-install Chinese edition" for 10-29 on 11-01. This pulls in downloaders who never visit GitHub, which is exactly what the author wanted to avoid, and hands rights holders one more reason to come after them.
- Borrowing upstream fame: the title's "based on LASRecomp" leans on the recognition LASRecomp got from XDA and wccftech.
No paid acquisition seen, and no major games outlet has covered it specifically (as of 11-06). Only a Buy Me a Coffee donation link.
Who it's competing with
| Name | What it is | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| Ryujinx / yuzu forks (Ryubing, Citron, Eden) | Switch emulators; the original Ryujinx and yuzu were shut down by Nintendo in 2024 | Largest user base, but requires tuning and has shader stutter. PrimeRecomp takes users by being compatible with their mods and saves. |
| PrimeHack (Dolphin fork) | The long-standing Prime community standard since 2019 | Runs the original GameCube/Wii trilogy, not the remaster visuals |
| MetroidPrimePort | Native port of the GameCube original based on decompilation, built in 9-19 | 653 stars, covered by dsogaming; uses the original assets. Community threads debate which is the best Prime experience. |
| LASRecomp | Upstream, 10-08 | 2,149 star |
| Other Metroid recompilations (Dread, Hunters, Prime 4 in progress) | Other titles in the same series | A few hundred stars, competing for the same players' attention |
The broader trend: since September, 464 new repos with "recomp" in the name or description have appeared, totaling about 68k stars, with 6 over a thousand. The top one, a PC recompilation of *Tears of the Kingdom*, has 5,113 stars (GitHub, 11-06). PrimeRecomp sits in the lower-middle of that wave. The same organization 10-29 also released a recompilation of *Metroid: Samus Returns* for 3DS, msr2ds (232 stars), using the same playbook again.
If it were you
Verdict (C): worth learning from, not worth chasing now. This is a gold rush that's been running for two months, with several hundred repos doing the same thing. Even a project executed this well only reached about two hundred stars, and most of the attention went to the earliest, biggest names. Nintendo has also taken down yuzu and Ryujinx, so any repo can disappear at any time and the stars go with it.
Who it fits: people who already do reverse engineering, emulator or low-level graphics work, who know ARM64 and Vulkan, who have a game they genuinely love that nobody has done yet, and who don't mind the repo being taken down someday.
Who it doesn't fit: general developers hoping to earn stars by picking a trending area. The barrier here is reverse engineering and graphics skill. AI can help you write code, but it can't stop someone else from already having claimed the game you picked. It's also not for people who want to avoid copyright risk.
How to do it: stop building Metroid and Zelda. Look at the comment sections under bases like LASRecomp and at r/decomps for works that are famous, have no official PC version, and that players name. Use the base to ship a version that can be played start to finish first. Then follow PrimeRecomp's pace: a release every two or three days, each fixing one complaint players can feel. Never include game files in the repo, and state the upstream project on the first screen.
How to get users: write the README as a changelog players can read, with a one-line title per release. That gives YouTube channels and Reddit ready-made material. On release day, send screenshots and a one-line feature list to retro gaming news accounts. Bring existing players over by supporting emulator mods, saves and original file formats. Point bug reports to a Discord so the community stays yours.
Deadline: the window is two to three weeks after the base ships. Prime was 17 days out, and anyone later risks finding the game already claimed.
Where this could be wrong: ① Before early 2027, some single new Switch recompilation projects passed a thousand stars within a month. That means famous games weren't fully picked over yet, and the opportunity may be bigger than stated here. ② Conversely, if Nintendo starts sending takedown notices over LASRecomp or similar projects, the whole category should be avoided. ③ If PrimeRecomp gets major games-press coverage after adding VR and passes a thousand stars in a week, that means one big feature can revive an older project, which beats chasing new games. Raise the estimate in that case.

Why PrimeRecomp (gminustwo/primerecomp) could run at all
One line
It statically recompiles the ARM64 code of the Switch version of Metroid Prime Remastered (2023) into C and packages it as a native Windows / macOS / Linux / Steam Deck program; players supply their own game dump. It is one of the projects in the AI-assisted "console game recompilation (recomp)" wave that started in October 2026, and its base is almost entirely peiikai/LASRecomp (the first public Switch static recompilation, for Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom). Stars are modest (about 200), but downloads are about 36 times the star count, spreading through the retro gaming and recomp circles on the strength of "a beloved classic + the first playable native PC version + a new version every two or three days."
Key facts
- Repo created 2026-10-25 (the gminustwo org was created the day before), v0.0.1 released the same day; by 2026-11-06 it had shipped 7 releases (v0.0.1 10-25 → v0.0.7 11-06). (GitHub API, 2026-11-06)
- Stars: data card 10-27 showed 64,11-05, and 155,11-06 194; checked live via GitHub API that afternoon 223. Over the last 7 days +100,11-06; single-day peak +39. Forks 5. (Data card / GitHub API)
- Total release asset downloads about 8,037 (v0.0.6 2,759, v0.0.5 1,805, v0.0.3 994, v0.0.4 874, v0.0.2 700, v0.0.7 half a day after release 643, v0.0.1 262). Downloads run about 36 times stars: mostly players, not developers. (GitHub releases API)
- Nearly all commits are by fhclimited alone (203), with upstream author peiikai contributing 80 (inherited from LASRecomp). Within 11-05~06 two days, issues #32–#41 were opened, with feedback concentrated on Discord.
- The same org released gminustwo/msr2ds in early November (a recompile of Metroid: Samus Returns3 for DS, 10-29 built, 232 stars), which suggests this author specializes in recompiling the Metroid series.
Competitors (doing the same thing: playing Prime on PC)
| Name | Form | Launched | Scale | How it differs from PrimeRecomp |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ryujinx / yuzu and their forks (Ryubing, Citron, Eden, etc.) | Open-source emulator | from 2018; the original yuzu and Ryujinx were taken down by Nintendo in 2024 and carried on by forks | the largest user base among emulators | it is emulation, needing parameter tuning and suffering shader stutter; PrimeRecomp is a native program with mouse aiming, HDR, ultrawide support, 120fps, and shader precaching, yet it remains compatible with Ryujinx/yuzu mods and saves (v0.0.7), specifically catching these long-time users |
| PrimeHack (Dolphin fork) | Open-source emulator | From ¥2019 | an old standard in the Prime community (r/Metroid replies still recommend it, www.reddit.com/r/Metroid/comments/1x0j4bi/) | runs the GameCube/Wii trilogy, not remaster visuals; PrimeRecomp delivers remaster-level graphics plus PC shooter controls directly |
| Odrannnn/MetroidPrimePort | open source, a native port of the original GameCube game based on PrimeDecomp decompilation | 2026-09-19 | 653 stars, +81 in 7 days (local GitHub library); lots of media coverage (dsogaming 10-08, overclockedhq weekly headline) | the source material is the original GC game (with remaster-style effects added); PrimeRecomp runs the remaster build itself. Both coexist, and community posts compare "the best Prime experience" (https://www.reddit.com/r/decomps/comments/1x3rjk3/) |
| peiikai/LASRecomp | open source, Switch static recompilation | 2026-10-08 | 2,149 stars (local library); covered by XDA, wccftech, GBAtemp | upstream; PrimeRecomp largely reuses its whole toolset (the recompiler, Horizon OS services, NVN→Vulkan renderer) adapted for Prime |
| other Metroid recomps: Metroid-Dread-Recomp (352 stars, 09-15), MetroidPrimeHuntersRecomp (280,08-01), a Metroid Prime 4 recomp (WIP, r/decomps) | Open source | 2026-08~11 | A few hundred stars | different titles, same player base |
| Nintendo's official releases | big tech | None | — | the Prime remaster has no official PC version, a gap in the market |
Bigger picture: in the local GitHub library, since 2026-09 there are 464 new repos with recomp/recompil in the name or description, totaling about 68k stars, 6 of them over a thousand (totk-pc-recomp 5,113, SavageWindRecomp 3,193, LASRecomp 2,149, etc.). PrimeRecomp's stars are only middling-to-low in this wave.
Growth tactics (where users came from)
- Shared the same day by a game news account on X: Pixel Cherry Ninja (@PixelCNinja) posted "Metroid Prime Remastered native port… v0.0.3" with a GitHub link on 10-26 (https://x.com/PixelCNinja/status/2114657926912618742). The data card at the time already showed 64 stars for 10-27, so the first wave arrived two days after the repo was created.
- Reddit r/decomps, r/recomps: the post "PrimeRecomp - Native PC Port of Metroid Prime Remastered for Switch based on LASRecomp | 4K 60/120fps…" keeps getting cited on r/decomps; there is also "The metroid prime PC port keeps improving" (r/recomps) and a shader stutter comparison post (r/recomps 1xigdjg). (Jina search-result snippets; Reddit bodies 403 not read, heat unverified)
- YouTube 复古游戏频道:Video Game Esoterica(8.9 万订阅)11-05 发「Metroid Prime Remastered Recomp Out NOW! And Updated!」,一天 17,953 次观看(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ja4mrSUueKQ)。这正好对上 11-06 单日 +39 的最高涨幅和 v0.0.7 的 643 次下载。
- recomp aggregator / SEO sites: RecompLauncher lists the game (https://recomplauncher.org/games/primerecomp/, 11-02), gamerbrowser.com ran "Metroid Prime Remastered PC Port: Play It Natively" (10-30), and framesgames' "Recomp Games on PC: All 237" includes it. These sites only appeared this month and are living off recomp-wave search traffic.
- Chinese resource site bundles: Switch520 (ns520.com 10-29), 91 freebie site, and Xiaoji resources (11-01) packaged "game v1.0.0 + porter v0.0.3" as a 13.8GB "PC no-install Chinese version" (https://www.ns520.com/59640.html). This is exactly the "bundled game" the author wanted to avoid, but it brought in a batch of downloaders who never look at GitHub; the result gave Nintendo one more reason to send legal letters.
- Riding on upstream fame: the README's first screen says "built on LAS Recomp, please also star LAS Recomp," and the clickbait-style "based on LASRecomp" borrows the recognition LASRecomp earned from XDA and wccftech.
- Frequent updates bring people back: 12 releases in 7 days, each with something noticeable (Steam Deck, macOS, HDR, Wii remote, cheats, mods, shader precaching), and each release gives YouTubers and Reddit an "Updated!" hook.
No paid acquisition found; a search for primerecomp in the local X corpus (x-radar) returned nothing, so there was no viral spread from big accounts on X.
Why it took off
- IP and timing: Metroid Prime Remastered is widely seen as the series peak, yet it never got a PC version. After LASRecomp proved "Switch games can be statically recompiled" with 10-08, players started hoping for the next one (a YouTube comment under LASRecomp already asks for it: "Metroid Prime Remaster recompiled would be awesome… needs a VR mod", www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qv4ki2JJR4o). PrimeRecomp shipped a playable build 17 days later, and the first item under Future work in its README is "VR".
- Toolchain ready-made: nearly all the low-level pieces (the recompiler, system services, renderer, audio, boot screen) come from LASRecomp, so the author only has to adapt them. That's why it could ship 7 versions in 12 days.
- Built for PC players, not just "it runs": direct mouse aiming, 8K, ultrawide HUD, 120fps, HDR, gyro, Wii Remote pointer aiming, DualSense HD rumble, skipping cutscenes, cheats, Steam Deck presets. Every one of these is something an emulator can't give you or makes hard to tune.
- Catching long-time emulator users: v0.7 reads NSP/XCI directly (no unpacking), works with Ryujinx/yuzu mods, and supports Atmosphere cheats and save migration. The barrier drops to "an emulator user can switch over in a few minutes."
- Engineering fixes for visible pain points: door-transition stutter cut from 293ms to under 20ms, Steam Deck framerate pulled up from 25fps, shader pre-caching to avoid first-time hitches. All of this is listed in the README and got passed around by Reddit comparison threads.
Differentiation
Versus emulators: native execution, PC-style control and graphics options, and Prime-specific gameplay features (Wii Remote pointing, a hint timer, upgrade cheats). Versus the GC decompilation port (MetroidPrimePort): it runs the remake's visuals and content instead of bolting remake effects onto the original. Versus upstream LASRecomp: swaps in a more mainstream, mouse-friendly FPS classic.
This differentiation is really why it got noticed, but the moat is shallow. The capability comes from upstream, and anyone can use the same toolchain to adapt other Switch games (hundreds of recomp libraries have appeared in the past month). It holds its ground on the Prime name because of first-mover advantage, update speed, and community credibility, not technical exclusivity.
Visibility
It's being talked about in niche circles: r/decomps, r/recomps, a YouTube channel with 90k subscribers, a few recomp aggregator sites, and Chinese resource sites that bundle it. I didn't find mainstream gaming coverage specifically on it (XDA, wccftech, and notebookcheck have covered LASRecomp and Metroid Dread) as of the 11-06 search. No revenue involved, just a Buy Me a Coffee donation link.
Copycats
I didn't find another library doing a recomp of the Prime remake. The same author is copying this approach (msr2ds, Samus Returns). More broadly, the whole recomp space uses the same pattern: a "LASRecomp/ReXGlue base plus swap in a game."
What to borrow
- Once a general base is proven, apply it immediately to titles that are famous, lack an official PC release, and have clear player frustration. First-mover advantage is everything.
- Write the README as a changelog players can understand (one line per version, "New in vX: …"), giving YouTubers and Reddit ready-made material.
- Lower migration costs by staying compatible with the existing ecosystem (emulator mods, saves, cheats).
- Route bug reports to Discord; keep GitHub for code and releases, so the community stays under your control.
Unknowns
- Reddit post body 403 was not read, so upvote and comment counts are unverified.
- Whether AI was used heavily to write the code is unverified (the upstream LASRecomp author said on Reddit it was "almost entirely AI"; fhclimited's commit style is highly consistent, which suggests something similar).
- Legal risk: Nintendo's handling of yuzu and Ryujinx sets a precedent, and the LASRecomp coverage headline itself said "Nintendo probably won't be happy." Chinese sites bundling entire games raise the odds of a DMCA takedown. The repo could disappear at any time.
- Download counts include repeat downloads by the same person and version updates, so they don't equal unique users.
