530k views earned 52 stars: GroundingPI, the open-source 4B visual grounding model from XPeng. How did the stars come in?
What it is A small open-source model that finds things in images. Tell it what to look for and it marks the location on the image. It handles detection, text, and UI buttons, and is meant to serve as eyes for robots and self-driving cars.
Why it blew up Backed by XPeng and a string of top universities, with the headline "4B small model beats GPT-6 Astra." It first hit #1 on Hugging Face's daily papers and collected stars from the research crowd, then XPeng's official PR pushed another wave a month later.
CHow you can ride it You can't ride the model itself. You can copy the playbook: release in three stages, post where developers actually look, and use one concrete comparison as the headline. If you want to build, port and wrap big-lab vision models (MLX, llama.cpp, ComfyUI nodes), picking ones with high download counts.

GroundingPI is a 4B small model that XPeng open-sourced together with 8 institutions including Peking University and HKU. Give it an image and a sentence, and it marks a point or box on the image. It was made public in Sep 30, and by Nov 6 it had 374 stars. The number isn't huge, but how it got them is representative: how a big-lab research project launches on GitHub, why a loud launch and real usage are two different things, and what a solo developer can take away from it.
One 530k-view post, 52 stars in two days
Evening of Nov 2026, 4 (Beijing time), XPeng's overseas official account @XPENG_Global (430k followers) posted: "XPENG and Academic Partners Release GroundingPI……Outperforming GPT-6 Astra in Overall Perception Benchmarks. $XPEV." As of 11-06 that post has 530k views and 810 likes. The same day, ten-plus outlets including CnEVPost, Sina, Tencent News, and TMTPost ran stories, mostly headlined along the lines of "4B small model beats GPT-6 Astra."
How much did the repo gain those two days? 11-05 +19,11-06 +33 (GitHub daily records). Half a month earlier, with no news at all, it was still gaining 10 to 20 stars a day.
In other words, a listed carmaker's official PR bought only a few dozen stars on GitHub. Most people who see X posts are car owners and investors (the post carries the ticker $XPEV), not developers who star repos.
What it is
A vision-language model built for "finding things in images." Say "the second red cup from the left" and it returns that cup's box. Say "settings button" and it points to it on a screenshot. Object detection, referring, pointing, OCR, GUI element grounding, and document layout grounding, tasks that used to need several separate models, are handled by one model, with coordinates written as tokens in a unified 0-to-999 range.
It's built on Kimi's vision encoder plus Qwen3-4B, trained in three stages: pretraining, fine-tuning, and reinforcement learning. Two selling points:
- A number that travels well. Across 34 public grounding benchmarks and 11 capability categories, averaged with equal weight, it scores 73.68. OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra, released in September, scores 71.54. That's the team's own test, and it's limited to these 34 perception tasks.
- A new pitch. It doesn't aim to be a general-purpose LLM. It wants to be the "System-1 perception foundation" for robots and self-driving cars. In the project page's simulations, a robot system built on it reaches a higher success rate using only 50% of the demo data than a baseline reaches using 75%. It ranks first in all 4 out-of-distribution settings on RoboTwin 2.0. XPeng itself says this is still at the "scientific prototype" stage.
Paper, weights (on both Hugging Face and ModelScope), vLLM deployment, an OpenAI-compatible API, a batch annotation script, 34 evaluation suites, Chinese and English READMEs, and an online demo, all released at once under Apache-2.0. The hardware bar is high, though: the GPUs tested in the README are B300, B200, H200, H800, and T-Head's PPU, and it needs a custom build of Transformers.

The first wave came from Hugging Face. On Oct 13 it hit #1 on Daily Papers. @HuggingPapers (22k followers) posted "A 4B grounding foundation model for physical intelligence" that day, 6,171 views. The next day, HF staffer @AdinaYakup posted "3 open models from GroundingPI." The same day, the Chinese WeChat account "Embodied AI Hub" also wrote about it. This wave's readers were multimodal and robotics researchers, the people who star repos, so the view count was much smaller but the stars grew fastest.
For the next three weeks it grew slowly on tooling. The annotation tool X-AnyLabeling (10.9k stars) added a GroundingPI example page, and its README now includes a JSONL batch auto-labeling workflow aimed at people who want to use it to label their own data.
The second wave was PR. That's the opening post. Lots of buzz, little conversion to GitHub.
What held it all up was the backing: XPeng is a listed company, 26 authors came from XPeng, Peking University, HKU, Berkeley, Princeton, NTU Singapore, Tsinghua, and HKUST (Guangzhou), and the author list includes Shilong Liu, first author of Grounding DINO (10k stars). XPeng's head of general intelligence, Liu Xianming, is also on it. In academic circles, people reposting each other adds up to a batch of stars (my inference; I haven't verified the repost volume).
Many stars doesn't mean people use it
| Project | Scale (11-06) | Compared with GroundingPI |
|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA LocateAnything-3B | 221k HF downloads, 3,174 likes | Parallel box output, with speed as the selling point. A community C++ port, locate-anything.cpp, has 649 stars, more than GroundingPI itself. |
| IDEA Rex-Omni(3B) | 1,634 stars, 14.7k HF downloads | Nearly the same idea: it also unifies perception tasks with coordinate tokens, a year earlier |
| Grounding DINO / DINO-X | 10,734 / 1,426 stars | Traditional detection architecture; fast, with a mature ecosystem |
| Meta SAM 3 | 12,221 stars | Leans toward segmentation |
| Qwen3-VL | 20,170 stars | General-purpose model; grounding is a side capability |
| UI-TARS / Molmo | 11,681 / 945 stars | Each specializes in GUI and pointing, respectively |
GroundingPI has 1,361 downloads on HF and 14 forks. NVIDIA's comparable model gets 160x more downloads. NVIDIA, Meta, Alibaba and IDEA are all building in this space, and their models are one to two orders of magnitude bigger. Its real novelty is the pitch of being robots' eyes, plus a set of downstream experiments. That gives PR a story, but it hasn't turned into users yet.
Nobody has copied it yet. The only derivatives are an unofficial Apple Silicon (MLX) port by indie dev kongzhuww 10-25 and a repo about learning to say "nothing here" when no target is found, each with 1 stars.
What you can take from this
You can't compete with the model itself: 26 authors, B-series GPUs, a carmaker's brand. What's worth copying is how it was launched:
- Release it in three waves, each riding a fresh burst of attention. Paper and weights go out first, then two weeks later a push for HF Daily Papers, and a formal PR campaign a month later. Don't spend every channel on day one.
- Find the people who actually star repos. HF Daily Papers with 6k views brought in more stars than a carmaker tweet with 530k views. For an open-source project, post where developers actually look (HF, Reddit's r/LocalLLaMA, HN, big names in the community). That beats mass media.
- A comparison that works as a headline. "4B beats GPT-6 Astra" got copied as a headline by a dozen outlets. Narrower claims are fine too, as long as they're specific, checkable, and the opponent is famous enough.
- Ship the full package, then plug into a big tool. An OpenAI-compatible API, a live demo, bilingual READMEs, then integration into a tool with tens of thousands of stars (here, X-AnyLabeling). That tool's users become your funnel.
If it were you
Bottom line: This is a textbook on how to launch a research model, not a project to copy.
Who it's for: Anyone with a vision, robotics or multimodal open-source project who wants to know how to stage a release and where to post it. Or indie devs skilled at porting and wrapping who are looking for the next big-lab model to build on.
Who it's not for: Anyone who wants to retrain a grounding model from scratch by copying this. Without GPUs, data and institutional backing, you'd just be one more model next to Rex-Omni and LocateAnything.
If you must build something, here's how: Don't build GroundingPI itself. Build its "last mile." Follow the path of locate-anything.cpp: turn big-lab vision models into versions ordinary people can run (llama.cpp / MLX ports, ComfyUI nodes, a drag-and-drop auto-labeling tool). Pick models by download count, not stars. GroundingPI has only a few thousand downloads, so few people want a port of it. LocateAnything, with 200K downloads, is the kind of model where a port actually gets starred.
How to get users: Mention it in the original project's issues and discussions (big-lab teams often link community ports in their READMEs). Post on r/LocalLLaMA and HF, with titles that spell it out, like "Running xxx on a Mac / consumer GPU."
When to get in early: The porting window is two to four weeks after a big-lab model launches. After that, the lab may ship its own version, or someone else has already claimed the spot. GroundingPI has been out for 5 weeks, so that window has mostly closed for it.
What would prove this read wrong: If GroundingPI's HF downloads climb into the tens of thousands over the next month, or a robotics company publicly says it uses GroundingPI as its perception module, then it's no longer just a PR moment. Building tools around it (labeling, porting, fine-tuning services) would be worth another look.

GroundingPI (groundingpi/GroundingPI) research report
Research date: 2026-11-06 | Channel: GitHub | Repo: github.com/groundingpi/GroundingPI
One line
A 4B visual grounding foundation model released by XPeng with Peking University, HKU and other universities. Give it an image and a sentence, and it outputs points or boxes. It unifies detection, referring expressions, pointing, OCR, GUI and layout grounding, and is positioned as a "System-1 perception base" for robotics and autonomous driving. Paper, weights, inference and evaluation code are all open source (Apache-2.0).
Verdict: This isn't an indie product. Its attention came from a big lab's research, relayed through three stages: paper, HF Daily Papers #1, and XPeng's official PR. The two star jumps line up with those event dates. The repo itself has no monetization, so its value for small-product builders is mostly in the launch playbook.
1. Basic data
- The repo was created on 2026-09-30. The groundingpi account is a personal account (User) with 3 repos in total. A sibling repo, GroundAnything (a diffusion-style parallel decoding grounding model), has 116 stars (GitHub API, 2026-11-06).
- Stars: 2026-11-06 per the GitHub API as of 371, forks 14, watchers 2. Our data card records 357, up +113 over the last 7 days (the first 7 days +86), with a single-day peak of +39 (2026-10-15).
- Daily stars (our GitHub repo / data card): 10-17 102 → 10-31 253 → 11-04 305 → 11-05 324 (+19) → 11-06 357 (+33).
- Hugging Face: GroundingPI/GroundingPI has 1,361 total downloads, 30 in the last 1,200 days, and 39 likes. The sibling org's GroundAnything-VLM has 1,117 downloads / 65 likes, and GroundAnything has 787 downloads / 23 likes. The Space "GroundingPI Perception Studio" has 8 likes (HF API, 2026-11-06).
- Paper on arXiv 2609.39601 (v1 2026-09-30, v2 10-16), 64 pages. HF Papers 91 upvotes, featured on 2026-10-13 Daily Papers; the README marks it "#1 Paper of the Day." The HF paper page sits under the XPENG-AI organization.
- 26 authors from XPeng, Peking University, HKU, UC Berkeley, Princeton, NUS, Tsinghua and HKUST (Guangzhou) (project page). The list includes Shilong Liu (Grounding DINO first author), Ping Luo (HKU), Yixiao Ge, Shuchang Zhou, and Xianming Liu (head of XPeng's General Intelligence Center, per CnEVPost).
- Tech stack: MoonViT-V2 (Kimi) vision encoder with a Qwen3-4B language backbone. Coordinates are quantized into 0–999 tokens. Training runs in three stages: multimodal/spatial pretraining, SFT, and GRPO reinforcement learning. Inference has been tested on B300/B200/H200/H800 and PPU (T-Head), and the bar is high (requires vLLM 0.18 and a custom Transformers fork).
- Revenue: none. This is a research open-source project and it's free.
2. Competitors (doing the same job: open-source VLM-style unified grounding / detection)
| Name | Form | Launched | Scale | How it differs from GroundingPI |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA LocateAnything-3B | Open source (HF) | 2026-03 | HF downloads 221,113, 3,174 likes; derivative project locate-anything.cpp 649 stars | Parallel box decoding (PBD) focuses on speed, and a community ecosystem has already formed (cpp ports, ComfyUI nodes). GroundingPI focuses on downstream transfer for "physical intelligence," and uses PBD as a baseline in its evaluations. |
| IDEA Rex-Omni(3B) | Open source | 2025-10 | GitHub 1,634 stars, HF downloads 14,692 | Also unifies detection/OCR/pointing/layout into coordinate tokens, CVPR 2026. GroundingPI's evaluation set is bigger (34 tasks) and adds robotics and driving downstream validation. Shilong Liu has ties to both. |
| Grounding DINO / DINO-X | Open source / API | 2023-03 / 2024-11 | 10,734 star / 1,426 star | Traditional detection architecture (regression boxes), not a generative VLM. Fast, mature ecosystem. |
| Meta SAM 3 | Open source | 2025 | 12,221 star | Leans toward segmentation and concept prompts. GroundingPI outputs only points and boxes. |
| General-purpose VLMs such as Qwen3-VL and GPT-6 Astra | Open-source / big-company offerings | — | Qwen3-VL 20,170 star | General multimodal model where grounding is one capability among many. GroundingPI's pitch is that its 4B small model's grounding average beats GPT-6 Astra across 34 tasks (73.68 vs 71.54, team's own evaluation). |
| Molmo (pointing) | Open source | 2024-12 | 945 star | Pointing only, general-purpose model. |
| GUI agent models such as UI-TARS | Open source | 2025-01 | 11,681 star | Specialized in GUI. GroundingPI treats GUI grounding as one of 11 capability types. |
The space is crowded: NVIDIA, IDEA, Meta and Alibaba all have comparable open models, and theirs are one to two orders of magnitude bigger. GroundingPI's claimed position is as a perception backbone for VLA / world-action models, which is rare among open grounding models (it took first place on all 4 OOD settings of RoboTwin 2.0; RoboCasa-GR1 reached baseline-level results with 50% demo data versus the baseline's 75%; project page).
3. Where users came from (growth tactics)
- arXiv + Hugging Face Daily Papers (main channel, confirmed): 10-13 made Hugging Face Daily Papers, taking #1 for the day. @HuggingPapers (22K followers) posted about it 10-13 with 61 likes and 6,170 views. HF staffer @AdinaYakup posted "3 open models from GroundingPI" 10-14 with 34 likes and 1,951 views. @AINativeF's daily paper roundup also picked it up. Peak single-day star gain: +39 (10-15).
- Chinese tech self-media (confirmed): 10-14 The WeChat Official Account "具身智能之心" covered it, and the README links to the article (the body was blocked by a WeChat verification code, so I didn't read it). The weights are also up on ModelScope.
- XPeng official PR (wave two, confirmed): On 2026-11-04 XPeng posted a press release on its website; @XPENG_Global (430k followers) that day's tweet got 794 likes, 43 reposts, 514k views; CnEVPost, Sina, Sohu, Tencent News, Ifeng, TMTPost and NetEase all ran it the same day under the headline "4B small model beats GPT-6 Astra"; tech blogger John Koetsier (40k followers) picked it up, 154 likes, 7,294 views; there's a repost on Reddit r/Xpeng. That lines up with 11-05 +19 and 11-06 +33, star growth picked up again, matching the data card's "accelerating over the past 7 days".
- Ecosystem integration (confirmed): X-AnyLabeling (the annotation tool with 10,901 stars) already has example pages for GroundingPI / GroundAnything, and its README documents a JSONL batch-annotation workflow aimed at users who want to auto-label data.
- Author network (inferred): 26 authors from 8 institutions, including a Grounding DINO author, so academic reshares should be substantial; however, our local x-radar corpus has no related tweets, unverified.
- No HN discussion found (our hackernews database returns nothing), and no ads or influencer campaigns.
4. Why it took off
- Strong endorsements: XPeng (a listed automaker pushing physical AI) plus Peking, HKU, Berkeley and Princeton, and a Grounding DINO author. Both academic and industry credibility.
- Easy-to-share headline: "4B beats GPT-6 Astra", "SOTA on 34 benchmarks". Media and X pick these up easily.
- Riding the trend: In 2026, embodied AI and VLA are the hottest opportunities, and the "perception first, no action labels" pitch lines up with the "VLA lacks data" pain point.
- Complete open-source delivery: weights (HF + ModelScope), vLLM deployment, OpenAI-compatible API, batch annotation, 34 evaluation scripts, bilingual README and an online demo, all shipped at once.
- Two-stage launch: 9-30 paper and weights drop first, 10-13 go after the HF Daily Papers chart, 11-04 the company's official PR follows. Two waves of attention, so the star curve gets two steps.
5. Differentiation
The positioning isn't "yet another detection model" but "a perception backbone for physical intelligence". Beyond the highest average on 34 grounding tasks, it also validates downstream transfer and data efficiency on robot manipulation (RoboTwin 2.0, RoboCasa-GR1) and autonomous driving (nuScenes L2 0.296m). This is rare among peers like Rex-Omni and LocateAnything, and it's the main thread of the media coverage. But attention mostly comes from endorsements and PR; the differentiation gives PR a story to tell, while real usage is small: 1.3k HF downloads versus 220k for LocateAnything, and only 14 forks. So "the differentiation is why it took off" is only half right. More precisely, the differentiation gave PR a story to tell, while endorsements and channels brought the stars.
6. Visibility and copycats
- Visibility: revenue not applicable; widely covered. XPeng's official X account has 510k views, more than ten media outlets in China and abroad (CnEVPost, Sina, Tencent, TMTPost and others) covered it, and it ranked #1 on HF Daily Papers.
- Copycats: no similar projects copying it yet. Only an individual developer, kongzhuww, has made an unofficial MLX (Apple Silicon) port and a "rejection research" repo for 10-25, with 1 stars each. These are derivatives, not competition.
7. Takeaways
- A staged launch of "paper → HF Daily Papers push → company PR", with each stage earning its own wave of attention.
- Using "a small model beats the latest big-company flagship on one niche dimension" as the headline.
- Full open-source delivery (OpenAI-compatible API, batch annotation, demo, bilingual README, ModelScope mirror), and plugging into high-star tools like X-AnyLabeling as a distribution channel.
- Takeaway for small products: "auto-annotation / robot perception" can build downstream tools on this model, such as local or Mac ports and annotation SaaS. Some people are doing it, but only sporadically (the MLX port has 1 stars).
8. Uncertain
- The benchmark results are self-reported by the team, with no independent reproduction. "Beats GPT-6 Astra" applies only to these 34 perception benchmarks (the press release itself says so).
- Real usage is small, and the inference bar is high (needs B/H-series cards or PPUs, plus a custom Transformers). Whether stars turn into real adoption is still unclear.
- I couldn't find the read count for the "Embodied AI Heart" coverage; XPeng's spread in China (Weibo, WeChat Channels) is unverified.
