# One Bilibili video of "12 large models playing emperors" took a Chinese fictional-map tool up 200 stars in a week

**What it is** A free, open-source web tool. It uses plates, erosion and climate to generate a fictional planet, then simulates thousands of years of nations, dynasties and figures, producing an editable Chinese map and chronicle. It's for people writing fiction, building worlds, or running tabletop games.

**Why it took off** The author posted a Bilibili video titled roughly "12 large models play monarchs to see who reaches interstellar civilization first". It got 830k views and reached the site-wide ranking, with the repo link as the first line of the description. Most of the week's stars came from it. The product is serious and playable right in the browser, which caught the curiosity this wave brought.

**B** **How you could follow this** Don't build yet another generator. Copy the framing instead: plug LLM APIs into your existing engine or sandbox, and make "N models compete in my world" videos. Or, before the author ships an official plugin, build an open-source "multi-model strategy simulation arena" shell that fills the gap the video left unopened.

Grade B: the playbook is clear and easy to copy, and the LLM shell the video didn't open-source is a ready-made gap. But stars came almost entirely from one video. 830k views only converted to about 200 stars, similar-themed videos are already common on Bilibili, and the author says they'll add plugins themselves. Word is spreading in niche circles

civ-atlas (Civilization & Atlas) is an open-source tool that generates a whole planet in the browser and simulates thousands of years of history, for people writing fiction, building worlds, or running tabletop games. It had only 170 GitHub stars after a month. On Nov 1, the author posted a Bilibili video of "12 large models playing monarchs" with 830k views, and stars more than doubled within a week. The product is the same; the framing changed. Below: what it is, how the stars came, why 830k views only brought about two hundred stars, and which step to copy if you want your open-source project to grow like this.

### The Nov 1 evening video

On Nov 1, 21:48, 2026, a Bilibili UP host named "再改需求是修勾" posted a 20-minute video titled "[Civilization & Atlas] 12 large models play monarchs: who can lead humanity to interstellar civilization?", tagged as containing AI-generated content. The premise: on the same procedurally generated planet, 12 LLMs each rule one nation, and whoever brings humanity to interstellar civilization first wins.

The first line of the description is the GitHub repo address, followed by a very developer-style note: the video was made with this project's engine, and if you want to reproduce it you need two changes. Wrap the interface as MCP or another form agents can call, and change the simulation rules to "reduce simulation intensity and raise the weight of DM model edits". The last line says these changes will later ship as plugins in the "Creative Workshop".

As of 11-06, the video has 834k views, 81.7k likes, 56.5k favorites and 11k comments. It peaked at #12 on the Bilibili site-wide ranking and entered the "Popular" recommendations (Bilibili video page, 11-06). The account used to post only game clips, with 11 videos and very few fans. It now has 23k followers.

The account behind civ-atlas is this one. On Oct 7, the same account had posted "As a map-editing enthusiast, I built an open-source tool". Both videos carry the same repo link in the description, and the tone reads like a project owner outlining next steps. The author has never publicly said "I am this UP host". This is an inference from the content, with high confidence.

### What it actually is

Open atlas.gerdor.top: no sign-up, no install, and it works on a phone. Click New, and the screen first shows plates drifting and colliding, forming continents, then curling into a sphere. The timeline starts running: peoples spread from their origins, build cities, found states, fight wars, negotiate peace, and dynasties fall. A list of nations sits on the left, and a Chinese-language chronicle scrolls along the bottom.

It differs from typical "random map generators" at both ends:

- **The land is computed.** Plate tectonics raises mountains and subduction zones carve trenches. Rivers cut drainage networks using erosion equations. Wind belts carry moisture that rains on windward slopes and leaves rain shadows on leeward ones, then climate and precipitation sort the land into rainforest, grassland and desert. The README lists the papers and algorithms used.

- **History is simulated, and you can edit it.** Each dynasty has a family tree, with rulers, generals and ministers each given a courtesy name, native place and biography. The author can "protect" a nation that was meant to fall, make someone ascend the throne, or write an outline like "a certain state unifies in a certain year", then re-simulate from that year. Place names are generated in 12 linguistic styles such as "Central Plains, Jiangnan, Northern Frontier", and the layout follows Chinese map conventions.

You can export map images, the chronicle, replay videos and long-form story images. It's free and open source under AGPL-3.0, and a save file is only a few KB. You can optionally connect a DeepSeek or Alibaba Cloud Bailian key so an AI writes the history up as a chronicle, but the terrain and the history itself aren't generated by AI.

The development pace is also unusual: 10-07 shipped v1.0,10-11, v1.1,10-18, v1.2,10-25, v1.3,11-01 in one day, v1.4 and v1.5 (GitHub Releases). In 33 days there were 574 issues and PRs, most opened by the author, many tagged "auto-organized by QQ group assistant from group chat". The author used a bot to turn QQ group feedback directly into issues. This pace most likely reflects heavy use of AI coding (inferred).

### How the stars climbed

| Date | star | Gained that day |
|---|---|---|
| 10-17 | 130 | — |
| 10-17 to 11-01 | 130 → 169 | 2–5 per day |
| 11-02 | 174 | +5 |
| 11-03 | 206 | +32 |
| 11-04 | 285 | +79 |
| 11-05 | 343 | +58 |
| 11-06 | 370 | +27 |

Source: GitHub daily star records, as of 11-06.

Those first 130 stars came from the Oct 7 "I built an open-source tool" video: 64.8k views and 6216 favorites, plus a later "civ-atlas project development" compilation, for 82k views in total. For a tool on its own, it draws map and fictional-world enthusiasts, and that ceiling is fixed.

The Nov 1 video changed the theme. The tool stayed the same, but "look at the map generator I made" became "watch 12 LLMs compete to be the best emperor", and the views were 13 times the first video's. Within a day or two of posting, stars began climbing steeply, with a single-day peak of +11-04 (79). The video was picked up by several site-wide trending aggregators, and a Weibo AI blogger with 11-04 reposted it (7 reposts). I found no mention of it on X, Hacker News, Reddit, V2EX or Xiaohongshu, and no sign of paid ads or paid promotion. This wave came almost entirely from that one video.

The "LLMs competing on the same stage" format has already been proven on Bilibili many times. On the same video page, the recommendations include "7 AIs fall into the prisoner's dilemma, who survives to the end?" with 5.84M views, "11 AIs enter a capture-the-flag contest" with 1.34M, "Let 24 LLMs command a fleet! AI Navy World Cup", "7 AI models travel back to the Warring States" with 35k, "What if GPT and DeepSeek were the commanders in the Pacific War?" with 56k (Bilibili video page recommendations, 11-06). The topic itself is hot, but videos on the same theme range from a few thousand to millions of views. Whether one goes viral isn't decided by the topic alone.

### 830k views, but only 200 stars

Do the math: 830k views bring roughly 200 new stars, about 0.025%.

The reason isn't hard to guess. Most viewers of AI battle videos don't use GitHub. The people who were actually drawn over were probably clicking the web link and the QQ group, not the star button. The site's traffic isn't visible from outside, so there's no way to verify how many people who actually use the tool came from this video.

Another reason: the most compelling part of the video, 12 LLMs plugged in as monarchs, isn't open source. The description says "you'll need to make two modifications yourself." Viewers who finish the video and want to run it themselves find nothing ready-made in the repo. For technical viewers, that's a gap, and it's the key to the "how to follow" section below.

### Who is competing for the same position

| Competitors | What it is | Scale | How it differs from civ-atlas |
|---|---|---|---|
| Azgaar's Fantasy Map Generator | An open-source web map generator, 2017 | About 6200 stars on GitHub | Can also generate editable fantasy maps and nations, but only as a static snapshot with no year-by-year history simulation; English |
| WorldBox | God sandbox game | Mass-market (downloads unverified) | Shows the rise and fall of civilizations, but it's a game. It doesn't produce maps and chronicles you can use for writing |
| Dwarf Fortress Legends mode | Hardcore game | A classic in its niche | Deep history generation, but an extremely high barrier to entry; English |
| worldengine, mapgen4, mewo2/terrain | Open-source terrain generation | 1000–3000 star | Terrain only, no history |
| Inkarnate, Wonderdraft, World Anvil | Paid mapping / worldbuilding management tools | Commonly used in English-speaking worldbuilding circles | Hand-drawn or text notes; no simulation or generation |
| emollick/annals-kingdom | Open-source single page, 2026-07 | 51 star | Has dynasties and chronicles, but covers a single kingdom with no planetary geography, and isn't editable |

Combining "planet-scale physical geography + thousands of years of history simulation + Chinese-language chronicles + editable and exportable output," aimed at writers, is currently only this project. There is no open-source competitor of similar scope in the Chinese-speaking community.

As of 11-06, no obvious copycat projects are visible: 37 forks, all personal forks with few stars. But the "LLM as monarch" video format will likely be copied by other UP主 soon.

### Can you ride it?

If you want your open-source project to earn stars, there are three paths here, each worth a different amount.

**Copy its approach, not its product.** Building another Chinese fantasy-world generator means head-on competition with an author who ships a major release every week and already has a QQ group and a Bilibili account with 20k followers. Not worth it. What's worth copying is the step: if you already have a working engine, simulator, game, or sandbox, expose an interface that LLMs can call, then make a video titled "N LLMs compete inside my thing," with the repo link in the first line of the description. Same kind of tool, but with civ-atlas's framing, views go from 60k to 830k.

**Build the piece it didn't.** The "LLM as monarch" shell from the video isn't open source, and the description states what's planned: wrap the interface as MCP, swap in an agent shell, tune the simulation rules. An open-source "LLM strategy simulation arena" that can plug into civ-atlas or other sandboxes, with a leaderboard and replays built in, targets exactly the technical viewers who watched the video and want to run it themselves. AI-community people also star projects more readily than fiction writers do. The risk: the author has said he'll ship these as official plugins, so the window is the time before he does.

**Do it in another language.** The English worldbuilding community (places like r/worldbuilding) uses Azgaar, which has no year-by-year history. A world generator that simulates history on its own and lets you edit the outline, built for English-speaking writers, is an empty slot. But it means rewriting the whole stack from geography to history, a big project. civ-atlas making an English version itself is only a matter of time.

### If it were you

**Verdict:** B. Worth a try, but be clear about what to copy. Copying the framing of "plug LLMs into your own tool and film N models battling," and building the still-closed "LLM as monarch" shell, are both worth doing. Building another generator of the same kind in Chinese is not.

**Who it suits:** open-source authors who already have a working simulator, game engine, sandbox, or strategy game, can edit video themselves, and are willing to appear on Bilibili; or people familiar with MCP and agent frameworks who can build a "multi-model simulation" open-source framework within a week or two.

**Who it doesn't suit:** people without an existing engine who would have to write a planetary simulation from scratch (civ-atlas was built by its author over a month of intense development, shipping a major version every week); people who only want to write code and not make content, since this wave of stars came almost entirely from the video, with little spread inside GitHub circles; and people hoping to make money from it, since it's free and AGPL-licensed, so stars and reputation are the only return.

**How to do it:** first expose the engine's state reading and action execution as an MCP or HTTP interface so any model can act as a player. Prepare scripts and seeds that can be reproduced directly so viewers can run it right after watching. That fills the gap civ-atlas's video left. Put an animated replay of a match in the README header image, and state on the first screen how to run it with one command.

**How to acquire users:** one 15–20 minute Bilibili video, with a title in this format: "N LLMs play X, who can Y?" Use many recognizable model names. Put the repo link in the first line of the description and "how to run it yourself" in the second. Afterward, make a compilation of development logs, set up a QQ group, and use a bot to turn group feedback into issues. Don't expect views to convert directly into stars: estimate 0.02% to 0.05%. To get more stars, say explicitly at the end of the video: "code and match scripts are all on GitHub."

**When to move:** the "LLM as monarch" topic gets stale once similar videos multiply, so publish before late December if possible. If you're building the open-source arena shell, do it before the civ-atlas author puts official plugins into the Workshop.

**Signs you've misread the opportunity:** ① before December, several Bilibili videos titled "N LLMs act as monarchs / fight wars in XX" appear, mostly with under 10k views, meaning the topic is already overused; ② civ-atlas's star growth falls back to single digits per day after mid-November, with no new videos driving traffic, meaning this kind of traffic comes fast and doesn't stick, so it isn't worth building a project specifically around it; ③ the author releases an official LLM battle plugin first and stars spike again, meaning he has already filled the gap himself.

A final note for everyone building open source: civ-atlas's product was nearly identical in October and November. The difference in stars came entirely from framing. A niche tool that's solidly built gets seen more when you put it inside a topic the mainstream is already watching than when you add ten more features.

## guaner-334/civ-atlas — why it's breaking out

> Research date 2026-11-06. Data sources: our GitHub repo data card (repo_day), GitHub API, Bilibili video API, Sina/Weibo, Brave/Jina/Exa search.

### One line

Build an invented planet in the browser using plates, erosion and climate, then simulate thousands of years of peoples, states, dynasties and figures, and output an editable Chinese map and chronicle. Aimed at novelists, worldbuilders and tabletop RPG writers. Free, open source (AGPL-3.0), no sign-up. Live at [atlas.gerdor.top](https://atlas.gerdor.top).

**Verdict: this wave of stars came from one hit video by the author on Bilibili. The video 11-01 21:48 was titled "【文明与地图】12 LLMs play monarchs: which one can lead humanity to a star-faring civilization?", and stars began climbing steeply two to three days later. It rode the popular "LLMs competing" format and brought a niche worldbuilding tool to a mass audience.** The product has substance: strong geography and history simulation, native Chinese feel, very fast updates. But this week's growth came from the video, not from organic spread inside the GitHub community.

### 1. Data

- Stars: 10-17 at 130 → 11-02 at 174 (over these 16 days it gained only 2–5 a day) → 11-03 206 → 11-04 285 (+79 that day, the peak) → 11-05 343 → 11-06 370. Last 7 days: +207; the 7 days before: +12 (repo_day data card).

- Forks: 37. Of the 59 open issues on the data card, **most were opened by the author** . Across all 574 issues/PRs, only about 10 accounts outside the author opened 16 issues (GitHub API). Many issues carry the label "auto-compiled from QQ group chat by the QQ group assistant bot", meaning the author has a bot turn QQ group feedback into issues. So the recall argument "59 issues prove real people use it" doesn't hold: real feedback happens mostly in QQ groups (925687934), not on GitHub.

- The author account guaner-334 (display name Gerdor, domain gerdor.top) has little profile on GitHub: 3 public repos, no X account.

- Release cadence: v1.0.0 10-07 → v1.1.0 10-11 → v1.2.0 10-18 → v1.3.0 10-25 → v1.4.0 11-01 09:17 → v1.5.0 11-01 16:10 (GitHub Releases). Roughly one major version a week; 574 issues/PRs in 33 days, very high development speed, likely heavy AI-assisted coding.

### 2. Where users came from (growth tactics)

The Bilibili account "再改需求是修勾" (mid 19929260) is the author. Evidence: both video descriptions link the repo; the launch video is titled "I made an open-source tool"; the author speaks as the project owner about future plans in the description ("will be offered later as plugins in the Steam Workshop, with the core only providing necessary support"). The account previously posted game clips with only 11 videos and a small following.

| Timeline | Event | Data | Effect on stars |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026-10-07 22:45 | Bilibili launch video "As a map-editing enthusiast, I made an open-source tool" BV1zGH167EiM | 64.8k views, 4461 likes, 6216 favorites (Bilibili API, 11-06) | Cold start: about 130 stars accumulated before 10-17 |
| 10-07 ~ 11-01 | Series "civ-atlas project development", QQ group operations, weekly releases | Series total: 82k views | Daily +2~5 |
| **2026-11-01 21:48** | **Bilibili video "【文明与地图】12 LLMs play monarchs: which one can lead humanity to a star-faring civilization?" BV1onxb6rEeE** , 20 min, labeled "contains AI-generated content" | **832k views, 81.7k likes, 56.5k favorites, 33k coins, 12.6k shares, 11k comments; peaked at #12 on the site-wide leaderboard and entered "Popular recommendations"** (Bilibili API, 11-06) | Climbed steeply from 11-03; 11-04 single-day +79 |
| 11-02~11-04 | The video entered the national hot-list aggregators (Regungun regungun.com, Today Hot List coooz.com, cxyfreedom/website-hot-hub) | coooz shows 537k | Spillover traffic |
| 2026-11-04 22:00 | Weibo AI blogger "清月已经不困了" relayed the video, syndicated to Sina News | 7 shares, 2 comments | Very small impact |

- The video's angle: the author plugs 12 LLMs into his engine as monarchs and has them race to lead humanity to a star-faring civilization on the same planet. "LLMs competing head to head" has repeatedly produced hits on Chinese internet over 2024–2026 years (e.g. 12 LLMs playing Monopoly, asking 12 LLMs who will reach the World Cup semifinals). The author tied that topic to his own tool. The first line of the video description links the repo, and it explains two modifications needed to reproduce the setup (wrapping the API as MCP/Harness, lowering simulation intensity), pointing technical viewers to GitHub.

- Low conversion: 830k views brought only about 200 stars (about 0.025%). Most Bilibili viewers don't use GitHub; the real traffic likely went to the live site atlas.gerdor.top and the QQ groups, which we can't see.

- **X / HN / Reddit / V2EX / linux.do / Xiaohongshu: no mentions found** (x-radar searches for "civ-atlas", "文明与地图" and "atlas.gerdor" over the last 40 days each returned 0 results; Brave/Jina/Exa found nothing either). No ads, and no evidence of influencer partnerships.

### 3. Competitors

| Competitors | Form | Launched | Scale | How civ-atlas differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Azgaar's Fantasy Map Generator | Open-source web app | 2017 | GitHub 6187 star | Also a browser tool generating editable fantasy maps with countries and cities; but it gives a single static snapshot, with no year-by-year history, dynasties, figures or chronicle; English; flat grid |
| WorldBox | Games (Steam/mobile) | From ¥2018 | Mass-market sandbox god games (downloads unverified) | You can watch civilizations rise and fall, but it's a game: it doesn't produce maps, chronicles and setting text you can use for writing |
| Dwarf Fortress Legends mode | Games | From ¥2006 | A classic in hardcore circles | Very deep history generation, but a very high barrier to entry; English; not a creative tool |
| Mindwerks/worldengine | Open-source Python | 2013 | 1078 star | Also does plates, rain shadows, erosion, but only terrain, no history |
| redblobgames/mapgen4, mewo2/terrain | Open-source web app | 2016/2018 | 948 / 3040 star | Terrain generation only, a demo in nature |
| Inkarnate / Wonderdraft / Worldographer | Paid map-drawing tools | Around 2016 | Common in worldbuilding circles (scale unverified) | Hand-drawn maps; no simulation, no history generation |
| World Anvil | Worldbuilding wiki SaaS | 2017 | Mainstream in English-language circles (scale unverified) | Manages setting text; generates nothing |
| emollick/annals-kingdom | Open-source single HTML | 2026-07 | 51 star | Very close: dynasties, wars, automatic chronicle; but only one kingdom, no planet-scale geography, not editable |
| Nation simulator (Things That Happen on the Map) | Games | About 2026-10 | Not verified | Also a game where you watch nations rise and fall, not a creative tool |
| LLM-simulation type: civ6-mcp, GulfOfTrump, 三国志略 HiStrategy | Open source | 2026 | Small | Have LLMs play strategy games; the viral civ-atlas video used this same theme, but civ-atlas's own rules engine does not depend on an LLM |

**Verdict: almost no one occupies the slot that combines planet-scale physical geography, thousands of years of history simulation, a Chinese chronicle, and editing and export for writers.** The closest, Azgaar, is English and static; the Chinese-language scene has no open-source rival at that level.

### 4. Why it took off

1. **One viral Bilibili video (main cause)** : 11-01 posted "12 LLMs play monarchs", 830k views, peaked at #12 on the site-wide board; stars surged from 11-03, a single day +11-04 79. The timing lines up, and the first line of the description is the repo link.

2. **The author is himself a content creator and knows topic selection** : the launch video (65k views) was about "a tool" and only appealed to map enthusiasts; the second video switched to the mass-appeal "AI showdown" topic and its views rose 13 times. The tool itself didn't change; the framing did.

3. **The product holds up** : plate tectonics, Braun–Willett erosion, three-cell circulation, ocean currents, Whittaker biomes, plus peoples, dynasties, figure genealogies, and biographies of ministers, and place names arranged by Chinese map conventions (12 kinds of linguistic feel). The screenshots and GIFs look good and can sustain the curiosity the video creates. Users click the link and play: no install, no sign-up, works on phones, a very short path to conversion.

4. **Fast updates, fast community response** : one major release a week; QQ group feedback is automatically compiled by a bot into issues and goes straight into development. v1.4.0 split the simulation rules out of the engine, which paved the way for the gameplay shown in the video.

5. **Timing** : in 2026, "LLMs competing head to head" and "AI simulating a world" were both hot topics (MiroFish, civ6-mcp, GulfOfTrump and others appeared around the same time), and the video caught that wave.

### 5. Differentiation

- The selling point is **"generation + simulation + editable" together, all in Chinese** : the map is computed from physical processes, not random noise; the history is simulated year by year, not a static snapshot; the author can intervene in history, write outlines so the plot follows them, rename things, and export to video or a long image, ready to use as novel settings directly.

- The Chinese feel is key: place names, dynastic titles, font sizes, native places, chronicles in the style of "史臣曰" all match the taste of Chinese web-novel and tabletop RPG writers. English tools like Azgaar can't do this.

- **Differentiation is a reason people stay, but not what caused this week's spike.** This week's traffic came from the "AI monarch showdown" packaging. The hook is what pulled people in; differentiation determines whether they stick around once they arrive.

### 6. How many people saw it / copycats

- On Bilibili it got mass exposure (830k views, made the leaderboard), but almost only on Bilibili; on Weibo only one AI blogger shared it, and Sina News aggregated it; **nothing on X, English-language communities, HN, Sspai, or V2EX** , and no media covered it specifically. On GitHub it has only 370 stars and has not made trending (the repo is under 60 days old). It can be described as "circulating in small circles" and "having gone viral once in Chinese video circles."

- Copycats: **no clear copycats found** . The forks each have 0–3 stars and are personal forks. Some other LLM-simulated civilization repos appeared around the same time (e.g. lhy20070526-byte/cosmic-civilizations, created 10-17, 0 stars), but they predate the video, so they aren't copies of it. The "LLMs as monarchs" video format will likely be copied by other creators; keep watching this.

- No revenue involved: the site is free, AGPL licensed, with no paid option.

### 7. What others can learn

- **An open-source tool project, packaged as "AI showdown / AI experiment" content** : the tool is built as an engine that "can plug in LLMs", then a video is shot of "N LLMs competing inside my tool". Same tool, views went from 60k to 830k.

- Developer makes a dev-log compilation on his own UP channel, sets up a QQ group, uses a bot to auto-turn group chat into issues, and ships a release every week.

- Zero-friction web (no sign-up, works on phones, reproducible seeds, saves a few KB), so catching video traffic is cheap.

- Chinese worldbuilding, web novels, and TRPG are a demand nobody has served properly. English tools hold the spot, but none nail the Chinese feel.

### 8. Still unclear

- Actual site traffic and retention (not visible). How much of the Bilibili traffic turned into real creator users is unverified.

- The video's "12 LLMs" part uses a closed-source Agent modification, so viewers can't reproduce it directly. Once the hype around this part fades, star growth may slow down fast.

- "Revising requirements is a trap" is the author himself. This is inferred from the bio wording and the launch video, and the author has not publicly confirmed it.

- The scale of competitors like WorldBox, Kingdom Simulator, and Inkarnate is unverified.
