On the day Anthropic announced it would watermark Claude, a Parisian built a watermark remover in 5 hours; 87 days later 26k stars
What it is An open-source skill that installs into AI coding tools like Claude Code. It strips invisible characters and file metadata from AI-generated content and uses rewriting to scramble text watermarks. Free.
Why it took off In Aug 11 Anthropic announced non-removable watermarks on Claude output, and users pushed back. The repo was on GitHub that same day, its name was the search term, the author's X post reached 2M impressions, and the press covered it as the go-to watermark remover.
CHow you could follow it Stop building watermark removers. Copy the playbook instead: keep skill/plugin templates ready, and the next time a big company announces an unpopular forced change, publish a counter-tool the same day whose name is the demand keyword, and post about it on X yourself.

watermarks-remover is an open-source tool by Paris founder Guillaume Meyer that removes the "provenance markers" from content generated by Claude, Gemini, and OpenAI: invisible characters in text, C2PA and EXIF metadata in files, and statistical text watermarks scrambled through rewriting. Built from Aug 11, by Nov 6 it had 26,387 stars and 3,017 forks (GitHub, 11-06). Another repo with the same idea that day had only 151 stars. The gap isn't the features; it's that it was first that day, its name equaled the search term, and it installed directly into Claude Code. The playbook can be learned, but this particular slot is gone.
Aug 11, a "just curious" afternoon
In 2026 Aug 11, Anthropic announced that Claude models released after Aug 2 would embed an invisible statistical watermark in every block of text, which survives copy-paste; generated files would carry signed C2PA metadata. The stated reason was compliance with Article 50 of the EU AI Act. Users could not opt out. That day's Forbes headline was "Claude users can't opt out of the new watermark."
Meyer had been doing tech for 20 years and was building Memo, an e-commerce AI tool. He later told Business Insider: "Out of curiosity, I started researching what AI watermarks are and how they work, then wanted to build a tool to see whether I could remove them. A few hours later I put the first version on GitHub." The repo was created at UTC 16:32; its first commit read "Initial skill: remove Claude text marks and C2PA metadata," and v0.0.1 and v0.1.0 shipped the same day. It was still called remove-claude-marks back then.
He had only 5,000 thousand followers on X. The second post he made that day blew up: "It got 200 million impressions, and I only realized later it was also huge on LinkedIn and other networks. I had to register new accounts just to see what people were saying." In his words: "I wasn't prepared for this attention."
What it actually is
An Agent Skill plus a small service written with only the Python standard library. To install, give the GitHub URL to Claude Code, Codex, or Cursor and say "install this skill," or use Claude Code's plugin marketplace command. It works in two layers:
- What can be definitively removed: invisible Unicode characters, and C2PA/EXIF/XMP metadata in images and documents.
- What can only be scrambled as far as possible: statistical watermarks are hidden in which words the model chose, and the only way out is to have another model rewrite the text, detecting as it goes until detection fails. The cost is a drop in text quality.
The README spells out both layers clearly. The author also said on X in plain terms: "for now it can only remove metadata." BleepingComputer went through a bunch of watermark removers one by one and called this one unusually candid, in contrast to commercial sites promising "guaranteed undetectable." From Aug 11 to Sep 3 it shipped 9 releases, up to v0.7.0. Supported vendors grew from Claude to Gemini (SynthID-Text), OpenAI and open-source models, across 20 file formats. MIT licensed, free.

The real surge was the week of Aug 12 to 18. Forks ran 200 to 300 a day during those days, then fell back to a dozen or so a day. HN barely helped: the Daring Fireball piece bashing Anthropic hit 825 points and 731 comments on HN, but the repo's own Show HN came two weeks later and nobody cared.
Two things pushed it further than a typical tool:
- "AI removing its own watermark" is a meme on its face. @kimmonismus's post was a single line: "No surprise, Claude refuses to install this watermark remover. Nothing more to say, it speaks for itself." 1,526 likes. The conflict travels better than the tool does.
- The people coming weren't just developers. Claude subscribers, writers and students all wanted watermarks gone, and the install path was simply "paste the GitHub link into Claude." A tutorial circulated in a Facebook Claude Community group: "Google Watermarks Remover GitHub skill, paste the URL into Claude Code, say install this skill." People who landed on the GitHub page had one obvious action left: hit star. Forks account for 11.5% of stars, clearly higher than for a typical tool repo. The cause is unverified; plausibly part of it is install needs, part is people saving a copy in case it gets taken down.
The long tail after September most likely came from "how to remove Claude watermarks" tutorials, SEO articles and Claude plugin directories (inferred). Each time another vendor announced watermarks, a new wave followed the search. No sign of paid ads or star farming.
Same day, same idea
| Project | Launched | Scale (11-06) | Compared with alternatives |
|---|---|---|---|
| mikiane/claude-watermark-cleaner | 08-11, same day | 151 star | French, critical demo, only handles Claude's statistical watermark |
| anshaneja5/markscrub | 08-12, one day later | 66 star | Nearly identical shape (CLI plus agent skill); the author didn't get the viral post |
| aloshdenny/reverse-SynthID | 2025-12 | 5,052 star | Research-oriented, reverse-engineers Gemini's image watermark; watermarks-remover wired it in as an optional scoring component |
| claudewatermark.com / .rip, gptcleanup.com, nomark.me and others | 08~09 | Unknown | Keyword-grabbing web tools; most only strip invisible characters, with inflated claims (BleepingComputer) |
| StealthGPT, Human Writes | Existed already; added a dedicated page in August | Has paying users | Sells "bypass AI detection"; reputation is grey |
mikiane, launched the same day, got 151 stars; markscrub, a day later, got 66. The 170x gap came from no feature difference but three things:
- Being there on the day. The window is measured in hours; a day late and only a sliver is left.
- The name is the search term.
watermarks-remover: whatever people search for, that's what it's called. - The author took the reasonable side. He kept saying: "I'm not against content attribution, I'm against this technology and this approach." "It's for your own content." With the README honestly laying out its limits, media could safely cite it as a "respectable example" rather than file it under cheating tools.
Later entrants accepted that position too: someone built a GUI directly on top of it (watermarks-remover-gui) instead of starting from scratch.
Copycats are already plentiful
Open-source ones include haidrrrry/claude-watermark-remover (43 stars), AryamanSi17/claude-watermark-remover (near-verbatim copy of the description), Shreyan1/ai-text-watermark-remover, PyModel/watermark-remover, and in October an MCP version, balakhonoff/claude-watermark-remover. On the web it's a row of keyword-grabbing sites. None has reached a thousand stars.
The author has said it'll eventually become a business, but "whether it can legally be a commercial product, honestly I'm not sure."
If it were you
C: You can learn a playbook, but you can't get into this spot. In watermark removal, the first mover already took nearly all the stars, and the dozen-plus repos after it haven't passed a thousand. Building "a better watermark remover" now is most likely the fifteenth.
What's worth learning: when a big vendor announces a forced change users dislike and can't turn off, ship a counter-tool the same day. Name it after the demand keyword, package it as a Skill or plugin an agent can install in one sentence, post about it on X yourself, and be candid about limits in the README. The playbook works again next time, though nobody knows when the next event will come.
Who it suits: developers who watch AI vendor announcements daily, can ship something usable within a few hours, and have a small circle on X or LinkedIn that will amplify them.
Who it doesn't suit: anyone wanting to build another one in this space (the spot is taken); anyone without distribution who plans to "write it and wait to be found" (markscrub came a day later with similar features and got 66 stars); anyone who can't handle controversy (tools like this will always draw people calling you an enabler of fakery, plus the risk of platform takedowns and legal gray areas).
How to play it: don't go head-to-head with watermarks-remover; look for what it doesn't cover. For example, xAI announced that from Nov 7 it would watermark text in the Grok API. Whichever vendor announces next opens a brief gap. Or do the inverse: give ordinary people a tool to "check whether my text has a watermark." The more valuable skill to practice is reaction speed: keep Skill or plugin templates, install instructions and post formats ready, so you can ship within hours when an event hits.
How to get users: the first post should say in one line "X just announced Y, this tool does Z," with a short demo video. Post the same day; you can skip HN (this repo's Show HN got only 5 points). Then ride the news cycle: each time a new vendor or model adds watermarks, cut a release and post.
Deadline: each event's window lasts only a day or two. Grok watermarking takes effect Nov 7; if you want to try it, you have a day or two left. Miss it and you wait for the next one.
Signs you've misread it: (1) a new removal or detection tool passes a thousand stars within two months of watermarks-remover, which would mean the topic isn't exhausted and is worth another go; (2) when the next big-vendor forced change lands, none of the same-day counter-tools reaches a thousand stars, which would mean the "same-day counter" playbook has stopped working; (3) the EU or a vendor moves to force takedowns of watermark removers, which would shut this whole line down.

guillaumemeyer/watermarks-remover: why it took off
Channel: GitHub | repo created 2026-08-11 | today 2026-11-06 stars 26,387, forks 3,017 (github database repo_day); last 7 days +851, previous 7 days +939. One-liner: an Agent Skill plus a pure standard-library Python service that strips the 'provenance marks' from AI output by Claude, Gemini (SynthID-Text), OpenAI and others: invisible Unicode, C2PA/EXIF/XMP file metadata, and statistical text watermarks broken up by rewriting.
Verdict
A classic 'platform event + grabbing the first spot'. 2026-08-11 Anthropic announced that Claude models released from Aug 2 onward would add invisible statistical watermarks to all generated text (to comply with Article 50 of the EU AI Act), and users pushed back hard. The author, Guillaume Meyer (a Paris founder who makes the e-commerce AI tool Memo), built a first version in about 5 hours and created the repo the same day, then posted it on X. His second post hit 2M+ impressions. Business Insider, TNW, Gizmodo, Wired, Digital Trends and BleepingComputer then covered it as 'the most popular watermark remover'. It isn't the only one, nor technically the strongest, but it was on GitHub the same day the news broke, had the most direct name, was written most 'honestly', and could be installed straight into Claude Code, so it absorbed nearly all the attention: comparable open-source repos peaked at only 151 stars. The long tail of roughly 100 stars a day since then comes from tutorials on 'how to remove the Claude watermark', SEO articles, Facebook groups, Claude Code plugin marketplaces, and news about the watermark spreading to more models (Opus 4.x older models in late October, xAI Grok).
1. Why it took off
1. Timing: launched the same day as the platform event
- Anthropic 2026-08-11 announcement: text output from Claude models released in and after Aug 2 carries invisible watermarks that survive copy-paste; files carry C2PA signed metadata. (anthropic.com/news/claude-text-watermark; Forbes 2026-08-11 'Claude Users Can't Opt Out Of New Watermarks'; write-it.us)
- Repo created 2026-08-11 16:32 UTC. The first commit was "Initial skill: remove Claude text marks and C2PA metadata", and v0.0.1 and v0.1.0 shipped the same day (gh api commits/releases). It was originally named
remove-claude-marksand only later expanded to multiple vendors (migration note in the README). - The author's account: 'the first version took about 5 hours'; 'after my second X post on Aug 11 it blew up, reaching 200 million+ impressions, and later I found it was also popular on LinkedIn and other social networks.' (Business Insider 2026-08-23 as-told-to)
- The backlash was strong: on HN, Daring Fireball's 'Anthropic's "watermark" text adulteration in Claude is a perversion of writing' got 825 points / 731 comments (2026-08-16); TechCrunch ran 'Claude users are mad…' (08-13); TNW cited BI saying Google Trends for 'AI watermark remover' in the US rose +60% week over week, and some subscribers cancelled because of it. (hackernews database; TNW 2026-08-19)
2. Star curve
| Timeline | star | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 2026-08-13 | 4,500+ | BleepingComputer 08-13 |
| 2026-08-18~23 | 14,000+ | Business Insider / TNW / runtimewire |
| 2026-08-28 | 18,939 | github repo (wayback) |
| 2026-10-09 | 23,622 | GitHub repo |
| 2026-11-06 | 26,387 | GitHub repo |
Forks by day (gh forks API): 08-12 203, 08-13 312, 08-14 293, 08-17 278, then gradually fell back to about 10~20 a day. The biggest surge was concentrated in the week of August 12~18. The data card's highest single-day gain in the repo, +244, falls on 2026-10-29, which matches news from those days: the Claude watermark expanded in Nov 3 to Opus 4.7 / 4.6 and Sonnet 4.6 (the-decoder 10-31, maccus.fr); xAI announced watermarking of Grok API text from Nov 7; WRITER pushed enterprise-exclusive watermarking 10-27. Each time 'someone adds a watermark' sends people back to this repo. (This timing correspondence is an inference; I haven't verified referral traffic per item.)
3. Where people come from
- X (main engine): the author's own post 2M+ impressions (BI account); 8-16 the author's long X post (x-radar: 465 likes / 140k views); @ivanfioravanti reposted with praise (81 likes / 17k views); @kimmonismus posted 'Claude refuses to install this watermark-removal plugin' (1,526 likes / 138k views). The conflict of 'the AI itself won't help you remove its own watermark' is itself material for further spread. (x-radar corpus)
- Media: BleepingComputer (08-13, calling it 'the biggest'), Digital Trends (08-13), Business Insider (08-18 coverage + 08-23 author interview), TNW (08-19), Gizmodo (08-19), Wired (08-23), Indian Express, Startup Fortune, runtimewire (08-23), decodeinternet (10-05), newsanyway (09-29). Nearly every story about 'how to remove the Claude watermark' cites it as the representative project.
- LinkedIn / Facebook / Reddit / YouTube: the author says it also took off on LinkedIn; the Facebook 'Claude Community' group has a tutorial saying 'Google Watermarks Remover GitHub skill, paste the URL into Claude Code and say install this skill'; Reddit r/GenAI 4all has a post 'reaches 11k stars'; YouTube has in-depth explainer videos. The author himself said he 'wasn't ready to see influencers talking about my project'. (Exa/Jina search results)
- SEO / tutorial sites / aggregators: mavgpt.ai, haimaker.ai, ai-toolbox.co, skillshubmcp.com, claudemarketplaces.com, trendshift, earlysignal and many other pages list it as the answer to 'how to remove the Claude watermark'. This is the main source of the roughly 100 stars a day long tail since September (inference).
- HN is not a source: its own Show HN was posted 08-28 and got only 5 points (hackernews database).
- No evidence of ad buys or paid promotion was found.
4. Why it has so many stars and forks
- The audience isn't just developers: Claude subscribers, writers and students all want to 'remove the watermark', and the install method is simply 'give the GitHub URL to Claude Code / Codex / Cursor to install the skill', or
/plugin marketplace add. That pulled many non-developers to the GitHub page, where starring was the only 'save' action available to them. - Fork/star ≈ 11.5%, clearly higher than a typical tool repo. Some forks were made to install, modify, or guard against takedown (inference: there was worry the platform might pull a watermark-removal tool; not verified).
- From the start the author framed it as a political stance: 'I support content attribution, and I oppose this watermarking technology'; 'it's not for impersonating people or stealing content, it's for your own content'. Stars also work as a vote of stance. (BI interview)
II. Competitors and differentiation
Competitors (doing the same thing)

| StealthGPT, Human Writes | Web (paid) | Already existed; added a 'Claude watermark' page in August | Has paying users | Sells 'bypass AI detection' and added a page to ride the trend; commercialized, with a grey reputation |
| A model trained by @agapekeleta to remove AI-sounding text | Other | 2026-08-20 | X 247 likes | Rewrites with a specially trained LLM, not a toolchain |
| Chrome extensions like Gemini Watermark Remover | Chrome | 2025-12~2026-07 | Largest at 70k users (chromestore library) | Removes the visible watermark on Gemini images; an adjacent track that doesn't touch text watermarks |

Differentiation
- First, and its name is the need: created the day the news broke, and the repo name
watermarks-removeris exactly the search term. mikiane, created the same day, has only 151 stars, and MarkScrub, created a day later, has 66 stars. The gap comes almost entirely from being first plus the author's 2M-impression post, not from features. - The form factor hits the agent-era moment: built as an Agent Skill + Claude Code plugin marketplace + PostToolUse hook, 'let Claude install a skill that removes Claude watermarks' is inherently newsworthy (the kimmonismus post about 'Claude refuses to install' is proof).
- Honest, rigorous framing: the README explains the two-layer model (deterministic removal of invisible characters/metadata vs. statistical watermarks, which can only be broken by rewriting with a quality cost), and the author publicly says 'currently it can only remove metadata'. BleepingComputer specifically contrasted it with commercial sites as 'unusually candid', which made media willing to cite it as a 'decent representative' rather than lumping it in with cheating tools.
- Continued iteration held the position: from Aug 11 to Sep 3 it shipped v0.0.1→v0.7.0, 9 versions in total, expanded to Gemini/OpenAI/open-source models, 20 file formats, and security hardening, and accepted external contributor PRs. Later authors of similar tools often built a GUI on top of it (sglogger/watermarks-remover-gui) instead of starting from scratch.
Was differentiation the reason it took off? Partly. The decisive factors were timing, being first, and the author's post; the product form (Agent Skill/plugin) and the 'honest' framing determined that media and follow-up tutorials picked it as the representative, so the first-place position wasn't taken by later entrants.
III. Visibility and copycats
- Visibility: already widely discussed. BI interviewed the author; TNW, Gizmodo, Wired, Digital Trends and BleepingComputer all named it; Reddit, Facebook and YouTube have tutorials. This is not a hidden opportunity.
- Copycats: in open source, haidrrrry/claude-watermark-remover (43 stars), AryamanSi17/claude-watermark-remover ("Stdlib-first … Layer A text scrub, C2PA/EXIF/XMP", the description is nearly copied), Shreyan1/ai-text-watermark-remover, PyModel/watermark-remover, balakhonoff/claude-watermark-remover (MCP version, October), cyzanfar/text-watermark-remover; on the web, a batch of SEO sites such as claudewatermark.com, claudewatermark.rip, gptcleanup.com and nomark.me; the paid StealthGPT added a dedicated page.
- The author says "as a founder I'll eventually turn it into a business, but I don't know when or how", and is still unsure whether it can legally be commercialized (BI interview).
IV. What to take from it
- Platform policy events = windows measured in hours: when a big company announces a forced change users dislike, publish a "counter-tool" the same day, name it with the search term itself, and post about it on X. That can capture the whole topic's attention; wait a day and you only get scraps.
- Package the tool as a Skill/plugin an agent can install directly: this lowers the barrier for non-developers ("paste the URL to Claude and say install it"), and it creates a shareable hook of "make AI remove its own watermark".
- Take the "reasonable side" in the framing: stress "only for your own content" and be upfront about limitations. Media can cite that comfortably, and it often beats hype-heavy commercial sites.
- Keep harvesting similar events: every time a new model or vendor adds a watermark, that's a fresh traffic spike. Keep expanding vendor support to catch it.
V. What is uncertain
- The original Aug 11 X post that drew 2M impressions, and the list of big accounts that reposted it, were not obtained (the x-radar corpus does not include that post; only the 8-16 long-form article was collected).
- The GitHub stargazers API returns 404 for this repo, so daily star timestamps are unavailable. August's daily curve is inferred from fork timestamps and the numbers reported by media.
- The correspondence between 10-29's single-day +244 and the Opus 4.x watermark extension / Grok watermark news is an inference from timing.
- The actual effectiveness of the rewriting that removes statistical watermarks cannot be verified, since no public detector exists (BleepingComputer).
- The reason forks are high (install needs / protection against takedown / secondary development) has not been verified.
