# Between two rivals with 90k stars, Floorplan won over a different crowd: how it got 10k stars in 3 days

**What it is** A Claude Code / Codex plugin that has the AI read your code and draw a zoomable map of your app, labeled in plain language, and also checks for security holes common in AI-built apps.

**Why it took off** Similar tools are built for developers. This one is for people who build apps with AI without reading the code, and the copy explains it in one line. The author's short-video fans gave it the first push. After the security check launched, aggregator sites, charts and Instagram repost accounts picked it up, with daily gains of up to 776.

**B** **How you can ride it** Don't build another code map. Take a developer-tool category that's already proven (logs, databases, deployment, security checks), rebuild it for people who don't read code, add a feature that hits their anxieties, and open the README with a line that can be forwarded as a post.

Grade B: the audience targeting and copywriting are clear and copyable, and the vibecoder crowd is big enough. But the first wave relied on the author's built-in audience, which someone without a channel will struggle to match, the agent-plugin scene turns over fast, and the original category is already crowded. Being passed around in small circles

Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-08 (11 days, 11 observations). Points before 10-28 come from deeply / archive backfill, not every day has one

Turning a codebase into a diagram has been done on GitHub for a while: Archify and Understand-Anything each have over 90k stars. In Oct 27, a short-video creator who explains tech to "vibecoders who don't read code" released Floorplan. Its features are similar, but it's written for a different audience, and it adds a security-hole check. 10 days later it had 2,971 stars. What you can learn is the method of choosing an audience and writing the copy. The crowd he brought with him is not something you can borrow.

### A video about a login endpoint became a plugin three months later

Hayden Smith is @haydenschmitty on TikTok and "Anti-Hype AI Educator" on Instagram. His video titles follow one pattern: "Hashing explained for vibecoders", "Database migrations explained for vibecoders", "Input validation explained for non-technical vibecoders". The most popular one, posted Aug 6, was "5 ways your vibe-coded login is insecure", with 399k views and 26k likes. The second most popular, on UI design patterns, got 183k views (TikTok, read on 11-06). He had 6,490 TikTok followers and about 26k Instagram followers (search summary, date unclear).

In Oct 27, he posted a reel on Instagram: "I'm open-sourcing Floorplan". The opening paragraph of the README was later copied word for word by several outlets:

> You built an app, and there's a good chance AI did a lot of the work and it runs. But if someone asks you "What happens when a user checks out?" or "What breaks if I change this?", honestly, you don't know.

Its readers are not engineers. They are people who used Claude and Codex to put together a working app without ever reading its code. This group is the largest it has been in 2026 years, and it's exactly the audience under his videos.

### What it is

A Claude Code / Codex plugin. Install it with two commands, use your existing Claude or ChatGPT subscription, no API key, no dependencies. Tell the agent "draw me a floorplan", and a few minutes later you get an interactive, zoomable map:

- **Plain-language labels** : it writes "accepts card payment at checkout", not "Stripe API wrapper". Hover over a term to get an explanation, and a toggle switches back to the developer view.

- **Trace back from a page** : click a page you know and see the components, requests, server code, database and external services behind it. Frontend requests are matched to backend endpoints across repositories.

- **Ask the map** : "How does a refund get back onto the customer's card?" The answer comes with a small map showing only the relevant parts and a step-by-step walkthrough.

- **Recent work** : cards the AI just changed turn green, each with a note on how that change relates to your request.

- **Health check** : targets the pitfalls AI-built apps hit most often: secrets hardcoded in code or sent to the browser, Supabase tables anyone can read, Firebase rules left open, forgeable Stripe webhooks, endpoints callable without login. Each finding comes with a fix prompt you can paste directly.

Parsing is done by scripts. The endpoint matching for more than a dozen languages and frameworks is hardcoded rules, and the model only handles naming and explanation. One user wrote an article comparing it with their own agent: the agent drew the user flow from memory and got two things wrong, while Floorplan traced it correctly (Worklore, 11-02). There is also a no-install online demo. The map shows a fictional coffee-subscription app called "Brewline" across four repositories, and it works on a phone.

### When the stars came

| Date | star | Daily gain | What happened that day |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10-27 | 0 | — | Repo created; author posts open-source reel on Instagram |
| 10-28 | About 103 | +103 | An AI news site writes "103 stars in a day" |
| 10-29 | 275 | +172 | Big X account 0xMarioNawfal reposts it, largely copying the README opening and adding the install command; 40.5k views |
| 10-30 | 362 | +87 | Author's second reel; exported diagrams start carrying a "Made with Floorplan" link back |
| 10-31 | 462 | +100 | 0.6.0 Health check launches; someone posts on r/BestGitHubRepos |
| 11-01 | 698 | +236 | Aggregator sites, newsletters, LinkedIn posts |
| 11-02 | 1,474 | **+776** | Enters Trendshift's daily chart; a news site claims it hit GitHub trending that day (unverified) |
| 11-03 | 2,180 | +706 | Instagram repost accounts post videos saying "comment MAP and I'll send you the install instructions" |
| 11-04 | 2,526 | +346 | |
| 11-05 | 2,815 | +289 | |
| 11-06 | 2,971 | +156 | Cools off; 230 forks |

Data: GitHub daily stars / forks (from 10-29). The 10-28 figures come from that day's coverage.

The author's two reels and that X repost brought about 360 stars in the first four days. The real surge came after Health check launched: from 11-01 to 11-03 it gained over 1,700 in three days. By then the promotion was no longer coming from the author. It came from more than 20 AI aggregator sites (in English, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Chinese), the Trendshift chart, and the Instagram and Facebook repost accounts that hand out links in exchange for comment keywords. It was not posted on Hacker News or Product Hunt, no major tech outlet wrote about it, and no ads were bought.

The fork-to-star ratio is about 7.7%. Versions 0.6.2 and 0.6.3 fixed problems reported by 15 users, and several outside contributors joined. People are clearly installing it and using it. In 10 days it went from 0.3 to 0.6.3, and each release notes who reported which bug and thanks them.

### Why this one, and not the two with 90k stars

**It didn't invent the category.** Here's how the similar open-source projects stack up:

| Name | Scale (11-06) | Who it's for |
|---|---|---|
| tt-a1i/archify | 93.8k stars, +2,421 over the last 7 days | Polished diagrams for talks and demos, 10 diagram types |
| Egonex-AI/Understand-Anything | 90.9k stars, +2,039 over the last 7 days | Developers wading through large codebases; function- and class-level knowledge graph |
| colbymchenry/codegraph | 76.8k stars | Code index for agents, not for humans to look at |
| ahmedkhaleel2004/gitdiagram | 18.8k stars | Change a URL to get a static architecture diagram for any public repo |
| Agents365-ai/drawio-skill | 10.6k stars | Editable draw.io diagrams |
| caru-ini/stack-diagram | 1,858 stars (11-03 gained in one day: +779) | Describe your stack in a sentence and get a diagram with logos |
| CodeBoarding, oh-my-mermaid, swark and others | 1.7k–7.5k star | Static architecture diagrams / Mermaid |

**It changed the audience.** Every project above is written for developers. Floorplan's README includes a comparison table, "Floorplan, Archify or Understand Anything?", that puts it plainly: they're for explaining and for developers, and I'm for people who build apps with AI without reading the code. The table puts it next to two big names, and it lets anyone who forwards it explain the difference in one sentence.

**Security anxiety is a topic the author had already validated.** His most popular video was about vibe-coded endpoints being insecure. After Health check launched on 10-31, daily star gains went from 100 to 236, then to 776. Lines like "anyone can read your Supabase tables" alarm non-technical users, and news accounts love to repost them.

**The copy is ready-made for reposting.** "Ask yourself what happens at checkout, and you won't know" was posted by a big X account and aggregator sites without changing a word. Two install commands, a demo you can click on your phone, and a YouTube walkthrough let anyone who sees it try it right away.

**The author's audience does half the work.** His 26k followers are exactly the target users, so the launch reached the right people on day one. You can't borrow that part. But the big wave after that didn't come from his followers: aggregators and repost accounts look for new AI tools every day, and they picked Floorplan because its one-line pitch was clear and it rode a hot topic.

### Can you follow it?

First, what not to do: don't build another "agent reads code and draws a diagram". That space already has two projects with 90k stars, and in the same wave stack-diagram appeared and gained 779 in a single day. Floorplan has already claimed the "for vibecoders" position and ships a release every two days. Building a head-on competitor will most likely get buried.

What you can take is its method, which you can reuse with a different tool category:

1. **Find a developer-tool category that's already proven, and rebuild it for people who don't read code.** This group is the largest now, and almost no similar tools target them. Many categories would work: logs and errors ("why did your app crash last night", explained in plain language), databases ("what's in your users table, and who can see it"), deployment and billing ("how much you spend each month on Vercel / Supabase, and where it goes"), dependency upgrades, and testing.

2. **Add a feature this group worries about most.** For vibecoders that's security and "what did the AI change". Floorplan's Health check currently covers only a few categories: Supabase, Firebase, Stripe and secrets. It also states that it is a check, not an audit. Going deeper on security checks for vibe-coded apps (more platforms, more frameworks, a one-click pre-launch checkup) is a gap it hasn't filled (inferred).

3. **Make the first line of the README a tweet people can repost as-is. Add two install commands, a demo you can click on a phone, and a video. Name the biggest competitor right in the README and use their name to position yourself.**

4. **Exported files link back to you. Submit to the official plugin directory and awesome lists.**

### If it were you

**B: The approach is clear and worth a shot. But there's no audience of its own, so the first wave is hard to get going, and the "agent plugin" scene churns fast.**

- **Who it's for** : Developers who already make content for non-technical AI users, like writing, video, or community, even with just a few thousand relevant followers. Or people who know a dev tool category (logs, databases, deployment, testing) well enough to explain it in plain language.

- **Who it's not for** : Anyone trying to head-on build another code map or architecture diagram tool. Anyone with no distribution channel who's counting on organic GitHub traffic. Anyone who wants revenue: this path builds stars and reputation, and Floorplan's author's payoff is likely personal brand and consulting (inferred).

- **How to do it** : Pick a developer-tool category. First confirm on Reddit and vibecoder communities that these people are really asking "I can't read X." Build it as a Claude Code / Codex plugin where users bring their own model and need zero config. Run the underlying logic on deterministic scripts and let the model only do the explaining, so the results can be trusted. Ship a "fear-triggering" check in the first version.

- **How to get users** : Push your own short videos or posts to the first group of relevant people and aim for the first 100 to 200 stars. Write the README opening as a tweet and @ the big X accounts that cover AI tools. Once stars climb, aggregator sites, Trendshift, and Instagram repost accounts find it on their own. Floorplan's 11-01 to 11-03 three days ran mostly on exactly this.

- **When to get in** : The vibecoder crowd and the agent plugin ecosystem are both hot, and several projects in the "agent diagramming" wave can appear in a single week. Estimated runway: a few more months (rough guess). The later you enter, the more likely the "for non-technical users" spot in each category is already taken.

- **Signs you've misread it** : (1) Floorplan's star growth drops to a few dozen a day within a month and nobody is filing issues anymore. That means "non-technical users wanting to understand their own app" was a passing curiosity, not a habit, and tools for this crowd aren't worth building. (2) Claude Code or Codex ships code maps or security checks as built-in features, which narrows the plugin route. (3) Someone with no audience of their own, relying only on a README and posts, takes a "for vibecoders" X project past a thousand stars. That shows distribution isn't that critical, and this kind of project can move up a tier.

## Why Floorplan (haydenschmitty/floorplan) took off

> Channel: GitHub open source · built 2026-10-27 · as of 2026-11-06:2,971 stars / 230 forks (github repo_profile). One-liner: a Claude Code / Codex plugin that has the agent read your codebase and draw a zoomable, plain-English interactive "floor plan" of it, plus a Health check that catches the bugs AI-written apps tend to ship with.

### Conclusion first

Floorplan took off because of **an author with an existing audience and a specific pain point** , not technical superiority. Author Hayden Smith is a creator on Instagram and TikTok who teaches non-technical vibecoders how to build apps well (about 26k followers on IG; 6,490 on TikTok, with the top video at 399k views covering "5 ways your vibe-coded login API is insecure"). He didn't build another code knowledge graph. He reshaped the same kind of tool into a product for people who don't read code: plain-language labels, navigation from the page back to the code, a view of what the AI just changed, and the security issues he already talks about in his content (the Health check). That positioning makes it instantly understandable and shareable for AI news accounts and aggregators. His own short videos, a 0xMarioNawfal post with 40k views, and dozens of AI aggregator sites, IG repost accounts, and the Trendshift chart carried it, adding about 3k stars in 10 days.

### 1. Growth curve (github repo_day)

| Date | star | Daily gain | Events in the same period |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10-27 | 0 | — | Repo created. Author posts on IG: "I'm open-sourcing Floorplan." |
| 10-28 | ~103 | +103 | Reveneau reports "103 stars in a day" (web 2026-10-28) |
| 10-29 | 275 | +172 | 0xMarioNawfal (@RoundtableSpace) posts, 40.5K views (X web) |
| 10-30 | 362 | +87 | Author's second IG reel. 0.4.1 adds a "Made with Floorplan" link to exported diagrams. |
| 10-31 | 462 | +100 | 0.6.0 Health check launches. r/BestGitHubRepos post (512 stars at the time). |
| 11-01 | 698 | +236 | Aggregator sites, The Daily Commit, LinkedIn post. |
| 11-02 | 1,474 | **+776 (peak)** | explainx.ai says it made "GitHub trending" that day. Listed on Trendshift's daily chart. CreativeAiNinja posts (around 1.1k stars). |
| 11-03 | 2,180 | +706 | @tunestechtips, GitTrend and other IG repost accounts: "comment MAP and I'll send you the install steps." |
| 11-04 | 2,526 | +346 | |
| 11-05 | 2,815 | +289 | |
| 11-06 | 2,971 | +156 | Decline |

Fork-to-star ratio is about 7.7%. The author's profile shows that the 0.6.2 / 0.6.3 fixes came from "15 user reports" and several external contributors, which suggests people actually installed it. Note: our GitHub trending only tracks repos that have held the spot for 60 days, so it isn't in our trending table (trending_days_any=0). The Trendshift page shows it made the overall chart and the JavaScript daily chart Top 25 (JS chart rank 17/8/3/7/14, not checked day by day).

### 2. Competitors: This category was already crowded, and the rivals are much bigger

| Name | Form | Launched | Scale (github repos, 11-06) | How Floorplan differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| tt-a1i/archify | Open source agent skill | 2026-04-15 | 93,809 stars, 7 days +2,421 | Polished charts (10 types, exports to images and video) for explaining and demoing. Not aimed at "understanding your own app." |
| Egonex-AI/Understand-Anything | Open-source plugins | 2026-03-15 | 90,919 stars, 7 days +2,039 | File-, function- and class-level knowledge graphs for developers digging into large codebases |
| colbymchenry/codegraph | Open source | 2026-01-18 | 76,773 star | A pre-indexed code graph for agents to save tokens. Not meant for humans to look at. |
| ahmedkhaleel2004/gitdiagram | Open source + web | 2024-12 | 18,760 star | Change the URL to get an architecture diagram. Public repos only, read-only. |
| Agents365-ai/drawio-skill | Open-source skills | 2026-03 | 10,594 star | Editable draw.io diagrams |
| Cocoon-AI/architecture-diagram-generator, oh-my-mermaid, CodeBoarding, swark | Open source | 2024–2026 | 1.7k–7.5k star | Static architecture diagrams / Mermaid |
| caru-ini/stack-diagram | Open-source skills | 2026-11-01 | 1,858 stars (11-03 gained in one day: +779) | Describe your stack in one sentence to get a diagram with logos. Same "agent diagramming" wave. |
| haplollc/Vesalius | Open source + Mac/VS Code | 2026-10-22 | 81 star | Local code graph + MCP, developer-focused |
| Something like DeepWiki or CodeSee | Web / commercial | Already around | — | Auto docs and code maps, aimed at engineering teams |

**Key finding** : It didn't invent the category. Two open-source projects in the same space have around 90k stars each. Floorplan put a comparison table in its README ("Floorplan, Archify, or Understand Anything?") and used the names of the two big projects to position itself: "They're for developers and for explaining code. I'm for **people who build apps with AI but don't read code** ."

### 3. Growth tactics (evidence)

1. **The author's own short-video audience (confirmed)** : Instagram "Hayden Smith | Anti-Hype AI Educator" with about 26k followers (from a Jina search summary). 10-27 and 10-30 each posted an open-source reel. TikTok @haydenschmitty has 6,490 followers and 54k total likes (TikHub). The content is all "explaining tech concepts to vibecoders," and the two most popular videos are about login API security (399k views) and UI patterns (183k views). This audience is exactly Floorplan's target user.

2. **X big account repost (confirmed)** : 0xMarioNawfal(@RoundtableSpace)10-29 posted about it, basically copying the README intro + install command, 40.5K views; CreativeAiNinja 11-02 followed up before and after. x-radar's local corpus didn't surface it (not covered in the corpus).

3. **Long tail of AI aggregator sites / content farms (confirmed)** : 10-27 through 11-05 has 20 articles: Reveneau, KODiQ (multilingual), Chen Media, explainx.ai, Coderefer, AI Frontier Post, ReviewRamble (English/Japanese), HDATF (English/Korean), Early Signal, The Daily Commit, rafiqueAI (Portuguese), the Chinese site xdnf.cn. Also listed on skillsllm, claudepluginhub, claudemap, agentskillshub, and DeepWiki (found via Exa / Brave search).

4. **IG/FB repost accounts with "comment a keyword for the link" (confirmed)** : @tunestechtips (11-03, "Comment MAP"), GitTrend ("Comment LINK"), and a Facebook githunt video. Combined gain of about 1,480 stars across 11-02 and 11-03, matching when these reposts went out.

5. **Reddit (confirmed)** : r/BestGitHubRepos post (512 stars at the time). Submitted to awesome-claude-code (issue #3387).

6. **Chart (confirmed)** : Trendshift daily chart; explainx says 11-02 hit GitHub trending (doesn't match our database's "only logged after 60 full days" pattern, unverified).

7. **Built-in product link-back (confirmed)** : Exported diagrams from 0.4.1 onward carry a "Made with Floorplan" link. Submitted to the Claude official plugin directory on 0.4.3 (under review).

8. **Nothing found** : Hacker News (no entries in the hackernews table), Product Hunt (no entries in the producthunt table), paid ads.

### 4. Why it took off

- **The pain point is stated very concretely** : "Your AI-built app runs, but ask what happens at checkout and the honest answer is: no idea." 0xMarioNawfal and several aggregator sites repeated this line verbatim, so it's ready-made repost copy.

- **The target user changed** : similar tools are built for developers; this one is for vibecoders who don't read code. Plain-language labels ("takes card payments at checkout" instead of "Stripe API wrapper"), tracing from a single page, and cards turning green when the AI has just changed them. This group is the largest of these in 2026 years, and it's the author's own audience.

- **The health check hits security anxiety** : launched 10-31, it flags Supabase tables publicly readable, Firebase rules left open, Stripe webhooks that can be forged, and keys shipped to the browser, each with a copy-paste fix prompt. The author's most popular video was about insecure endpoints from vibe-coded apps; daily stars went from 100 the day after launch to 236, then 776.

- **Near-zero barrier to entry** : two commands to install, uses your existing Claude / ChatGPT plan, no API key, zero dependencies. There's a no-install online demo (Brewline, a coffee subscription app, viewable on a phone) and a YouTube walkthrough.

- **Frequent releases with public credit** : over 10 days it shipped several versions from 0.3 to 0.6.3, each naming the user-reported issues fixed and thanking who reported them. Aggregators were happy to write "frequently updated."

- **Rode on big projects' positioning** : the README comparison table piggybacked on the search traffic and recognition of Archify and Understand-Anything (90k stars each).

### 5. Differentiation, and whether it's the reason

Differentiation: **the same capability (an agent reads code and draws diagrams) is handed to a different audience** , plus two features only it has: the Health check (security checks for AI-written apps) and Recent work (which parts your AI just changed and why). Technically, scripts do deterministic parsing (endpoint matching across a dozen-plus languages and frameworks, linking frontend requests to backend routes across repos), and the model only handles naming and explanation. That's more reliable than "the model draws from memory," and one user wrote a comparison piece (Worklore: "My agent drew the user flow from memory and got two things wrong; Floorplan traced it correctly"). Is that the reason? **Partly, but only half** . Differentiation made the copy easy to pitch and aggregators willing to repost. The other half is the author's own audience and distribution. Several competitors have stronger features, but none pitch "for non-technical users."

### 6. How visible it is

**Spreading in niche circles** : AI news aggregators, Instagram repost accounts, and one large X account passed it along. Not on HN or PH, and no mainstream tech press coverage. It's open source and free, so there's no public revenue; the author's bio says "DM for collabs / consulting and projects," so the money probably flows through personal brand → consulting (inferred).

### 7. Copycats

No obvious copycat projects found (in the github table, the only ones created after 10-20 with similar descriptions are haplollc/Vesalius, 81 stars, and it was created earlier). Mostly repost accounts and aggregators, not clones.

### 8. What others can learn

- Take a validated open-source category (here, code graphs, with the top projects at 90k stars), **swap in a different user group and a different language** , then add a feature that group is most anxious about (security checks).

- Build the vertical audience first, then open source; make the README's first paragraph a tweet people can repost directly; give a two-line install command + no-install demo + video.

- Compare yourself openly to the biggest competitors in the README, borrowing their name recognition to position yourself.

- Exported outputs carry a "Made with" backlink; submit to the official plugin directory and awesome lists.

### 9. Still unclear

- Retention: daily star growth has fallen from 776 to 156/day; whether people use it every day after installing is not visible.

- Which channel drove the 11-02 peak (Instagram repost accounts, Trendshift, or GitHub trending) can't be attributed to a single source.

- The Instagram follower count comes from search snippets with an unknown date; the author's reel view counts weren't retrieved.

- Whether it got into the official Claude plugin directory: still under review.
