How a 5-thousand-subscriber circumvention tutorial channel sent a WARP client to 340 stars

What it is A Chinese-language circumvention tool for Windows (and Android): double-click, click once, and it routes traffic through Cloudflare's free WARP network automatically, with an optional extra hop through a volunteer's home broadband exit.

Why it took off The author is a Chinese circumvention-tutorial YouTuber. Two of their videos, "fully giving up on paid residential proxies" 10-27 and 10-29, drew 30k views combined. Viewers who finished them came to download it, asked questions, and starred it. The author packaged July's newly released anti-blocking WARP engine into a Chinese version beginners could use right away.

CHow you could follow Don't build another WARP client. Copy its playbook: first have a matching content channel, watch for new CLI tools or English-only engines, package them in your audience's language as double-click apps, one tool per video, ship fixes within three days, and film the next video from user feedback.

C grade: almost all the stars came from the author's own YouTube channel, which followers can't get. The Chinese window for WARP is already taken by it and a sibling project, and a circumvention client carries legal and takedown risk in China. The part worth copying is using the repo as a video landing page, but copying this one isn't worth it. Chatter in small circles

XEHN is a one-click Cloudflare WARP client for Windows: double-click, press the big round button, and it registers a WARP account, scans for the fastest endpoint, and takes over the system proxy. Most of the code is an engine someone else open-sourced recently. What pushed it up was the author's own Chinese YouTube channel, "小何爱分享": two videos with 30K views, and the peaks in stars, issues and downloads line up exactly with the days he posted. Below: how it grew, what you can learn from it, and why following this one isn't a good bet.

A video titled "Fully ditch paid residential proxies"

2026 Oct 27, the YouTube channel "Xiaohe Shares" (@xiaoheai, 5,460 subscribers, 84 videos) posted a video titled "Ditch paid residential proxies for good! A new open-source WARP gem: one-click scheduling of home broadband across the globe, unlimited traffic, maxed out!" with the tags #ResidentialIP #WARP #FreeVPN. As of 11-06, this video has 14,316 views, 177 likes, and 114 comments (YouTube, 11-06). The video description contains just one link: an illustrated tutorial of the same name on the author's blog.

Two days later, on Oct 29, he posted another video, "Goodbye to paid residential IPs: WARP's new free open-source masterpiece XEHN1.0.2 is out," which got 16.7K views. On Nov 3 he followed up with the Android version, 4.2K views.

The blog tutorial reads like a manual written for complete beginners: "After unzipping there is only one program file... double-click it", "click the big round 'Connect' button in the middle", "the default config works out of the box, most people don't need to touch anything." Section two covers one popup in particular: "This software is open source and free, for study and exchange only. Reselling is prohibited!" followed by "If you got this software through a paid channel, you bought a resold copy." Less than a week after release, people were already selling it.

(Daily GitHub star count, recorded once per day starting 10-28.)

Three things stand out.

First, the people arriving were ordinary video viewers, not developers. The issue titles from 10-27 to 10-29 read like: "the scrollbar on the settings page won't drag", "connection timeout just goes black", "tried every protocol and nothing connects", "what are the routing rules?", "the control panel is totally black." Over three days the author shipped v1.0.1 through v1.0.4 and each release fixed a batch, with a "user feedback fix list" posted on the blog.

Second, starring was incidental. Across all versions the installers were downloaded about 4,600 times in total, and the latest v1.0.4 alone got 1,730 downloads (GitHub, 11-06), more than ten times the star count. Forks are 130, almost 40% of stars, far above a typical project. Users of tools like this tend to fork a copy as a backup in case the original gets removed.

Third, there were almost no channels beyond the video: no discussion on X, and Hacker News, Reddit and English media never mentioned it. Only a few mirror repos with the same name, created between 10-27 and 10-29, each with 1 stars.

What it actually is

The repo has no description, but the first line of the README says it plainly: a WARP client for Windows, using the scanning engine from vernette/warpscout and an embedded Clash (mihomo) core. Specifically:

  • Automatically registers a WARP device account and scans for the best endpoint; protocols include WireGuard, AmneziaWG (anti-blocking, default), MASQUE, and WARP-over-WARP;
  • System proxy and TUN global modes; the "bypass mainland China" routing rules are taken straight from v2rayN;
  • Can chain another layer of Psiphon or VPN Gate (volunteers' home broadband OpenVPN nodes) as the exit, which is where the "dispatch global home broadband" in the title comes from;
  • Chinese UI, portable build that runs after unzipping, swappable core, one-click online updates.

It was created in Sep 8 as warp-client, renamed to XEHN in Oct 28 (the extracted program file is still called warp-client.exe), and an Android version came out in November. The README also has a section saying the program reads a control file from the repo on each launch, so the author can remotely shut it down. That too is aimed at resellers.

Put simply, it does one specific thing: around July 2026, the batch of open-source engines that let WARP get past blocks, warpscout and Aether among them, had just come out. All were CLI or English-only. The author was first to wrap them in a Chinese window program that a beginner could use, then filmed videos about it.

Who it's competing with

ProductScale (GitHub stars, 11-06)How XEHN differs
Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 / WARP official clientTens of millions of usersMostly can't connect in China; you can't pick endpoints or split routing
oblivion-desktop8.4KSame kind of desktop client, built for Iranian users, WARP + Psiphon
warp-plus2.0KCLI, no updates after 2025-12
CluvexStudio/Aether2.4KWARP core written in Rust, no Chinese GUI
vernette/warpscout600XEHN's upstream; only scans endpoints, not a client
wgcf / warp-yg8.9K / 4.7KCLI or VPS one-line scripts for technical users
v2rayN / Hiddify120K / 33.7KGeneral proxy client; you have to find your own nodes. XEHN ships with free, unlimited-traffic WARP built in

Feature-wise it does have a bit more than peers: Chinese UI, multiple exits, routing rules, one-click updates. But those aren't why it took off. The clearest evidence is the author's other repos: gate (VPN Gate node auto-testing and subscription releases) has 624 stars / 1,179 forks, and freesub (a free node-testing subscription pool, focused on "home residential IPs") has 408 stars. Both are technically simpler than XEHN and have more stars. Each corresponds to a video, such as "Cloudflare + GitHub fully automatic residential IP updates every 24 hours" with 33K views. The channel drives stars, not the code.

Why this one

  1. The author had a matching audience. 5K subscribers isn't huge, but they are all Chinese users who want to get on the foreign internet for free and reliably. One post gets tens of thousands of viewers. The repo works as the video's landing page, the issues extend the comment section, and each new release is material for the next video.
  2. The title hit a specific pain point. Chinese users who use ChatGPT or Gemini or register overseas accounts want "clean IPs". Airports are expensive, residential proxies more so, and WARP is free but the official client doesn't connect. Phrases like "fully ditch paid residential proxies" and "unlimited traffic" target that group's wallets directly.
  3. It caught a time window. The new engines had only just come out in July, and the author packaged them as a one-click Chinese app before anyone else. The Android video's title literally says "first on the entire web".

If it were you

A verdict: the playbook of "repo as video landing page, user feedback as the next video" is worth copying. But almost all of XEHN's stars came from the author's own channel, which you can't replicate, and circumvention tools carry their own risks. Copying this with another one isn't worth it.

Who it suits: developers who already run a technical tutorial channel, a blog, or a Telegram group of a few thousand people, with an audience waiting for your next tool. Or developers who can find the same "official client doesn't work" users in another language or another blocked environment (Russian, Persian, or Turkish speakers), and who are willing to make videos themselves.

Who it doesn't suit: anyone based in China writing code under their real identity (building circumvention clients in China carries real legal risk, and the repo can be reported and taken down at any time); anyone with no content channel hoping to earn stars from GitHub organic traffic alone. Peer projects without a channel mostly stall at a few dozen to a few hundred stars. And anyone wanting to build a general proxy client: v2rayN and Hiddify already have hundreds of thousands of stars combined.

How to do it: don't make the Nth WARP client. Copy the method: watch GitHub for newly released engines that are CLI-only or English-only (upstream authors are usually happy to have them wrapped), and before anyone builds a UI, package it for your audience as a "double-click and go" version. Put the video on the first screen of the README, and provide packaged installers on the release page so people don't have to compile. Ship fixes within three days, and each release comes with a "user feedback fix list".

How to get users: have the channel first, then the repo. One tool per video or one illustrated tutorial, with titles about money saved or problems solved ("no need to buy residential proxies anymore"), not technical jargon. Collect the questions from comments and issues into the next video.

When is "before": this kind of opportunity follows the upstream engine, and the window is about one to two months after the engine ships. For WARP this wave started in July and is mostly over. In the Chinese market, XEHN and the author's other project xiaohe have already claimed the space.

What would show you misread it: ① a comparable Chinese WARP client with no channel and no big-account shares grows to several hundred stars on its own within a month, meaning demand is big enough by itself and the channel isn't the only driver, so this path is wider than it looks; ② conversely, if XEHN's stars drop back to single digits per day or stall after the videos stop, or the repo gets taken down, that shows its stars were purely one-off video traffic, and confirms the risk of this kind of project.

One line

XEHN is a one-click Cloudflare WARP client for Windows (a native Go window with an embedded mihomo/Clash core). One click auto-registers a WARP account, scans for the best endpoint, and takes over the system proxy. It can also chain the exit through Psiphon / VPN Gate (OpenVPN volunteer home connections). The author is Chinese YouTube circumvention tutorial creator 「小何爱分享」 (@xiaoheai, 5.46K subscribers), and almost all of the stars come from his own videos and blog.

What it actually is (the part metadata doesn't show)

  • The repo has no description, but the README is clear: "A Windows client for Cloudflare WARP that scans for the best endpoint and connects through it in one click — built on top of vernette/warpscout's scanning engine with an embedded Clash (mihomo) core" (https://github.com/hezhanleiok/xehn).
  • Features: WireGuard / AmneziaWG (anti-blocking) / MASQUE / WARP-in-WARP; system proxy and TUN modes; a "bypass mainland China" routing ruleset (ported from v2rayN); secondary exits via Psiphon and VPN Gate; Chinese UI by default; portable ZIP (v2rayN-style folder, core updatable separately); one-click online update; tray resident.
  • It ships with a "remote control code": on each launch it checks control.json in the repo, so the author can remotely disable it (README section "Licence notice and remote control"). A launch popup reads "This software is open source and free, for learning and exchange only. Resale is prohibited!", which suggests people are already reselling it.
  • It started as warp-client (v0.3.x); 2026-10-28 it shipped v1.0.0 and was renamed XEHN. In November an Android version came out too (Kotlin + Go engine AAR, blog post blog.imxiaohe.com/2026/11/123.html).
  • Release download counts (GitHub API, 2026-11-06): v1.0.4 1730, v1.0.3 882, v1.0.2 683, v1.0.1 397, v0.3.11 879, roughly 4,600 total.

Where users come from: the author's own YouTube channel + blog + Telegram

The author's GitHub profile lists Xiao He (小何) and blog imxiaohe.com, self-described as "focused on Cloudflare, VPS, automated ops, and free resources." YouTube channel 「小何爱分享」 @xiaoheai: 5.46K subscribers, 84 videos, channel link t.me/xiaoheok (https://www.youtube.com/@xiaoheai/videos, fetched via Jina 2026-11-06).

Correlation:

  • 10/27–10/29 two videos → GitHub issues cluster in 10/27–10/29 (a dozen or so, all from ordinary Chinese users: "scroll bar won't drag", "connection timeout black screen", "how do I set up the routing rules?"), the typical "newbie who came for the video and downloaded it";
  • 10/29 shipped v1.0.2/1.0.3,10/30, then v1.0.4 → stars rose +60 in a single day at 10/30 (data card), and v1.0.4 had the most downloads of any version at 1730.
  • The Blogger mirror publishes illustrated tutorials and a "community feedback fix list" (https://blog.imxiaohe.com/2026/10/321.html, /2026/10/warpip-warp.html). A commit even reads "docs: Blogger-ready changelog", so code iteration directly feeds content updates.

No discussion found on X (x-radar search for xehn / hezhanleiok, 30–60 days, 0 posts); English web coverage is basically nil, with only one star-aggregator site listing it. No HN, Reddit, or media coverage.

The same author's same playbook

The author's 6 repos are all the same approach, and each has more stars than xehn: gate (624 stars / 1179 forks, auto-tests VPN Gate nodes and publishes a subscription), freesub (408 / 540, a free-node liveness-tested subscription pool, pitched as "home broadband residential IPs"), xiaohe (270 / 77, a WARP GUI based on CluvexStudio/Aether), and xehn (348 / 132). Each repo has a matching YouTube video (e.g. "Permanently free subscription… home residential IP" 21K, "Cloudflare + GitHub fully automated residential IP updates every 24 hours" 33K). Forks run well above the usual ratio, a common trait of these circumvention tools: users fork to run Actions themselves or keep a backup. gate's forks are nearly 2 times its stars.

Why it took off

  1. Distribution relies entirely on the author's own YouTube channel: a Chinese circumvention tutorial channel with 5.46K subscribers. Two XEHN videos together have 30k+ views, and the timing lines up one-to-one with peaks in stars, issues, and downloads.
  2. The titles hit real pain points: "Dropping paid residential proxies for good", "home residential IPs", "unlimited traffic", "unlock all AI". Users in China need clean IPs for ChatGPT/Gemini and for registering overseas accounts. Airports are expensive, residential proxies are pricier, and WARP is free but its official client doesn't work in China.
  3. The product is one-click for beginners: double-click, press the round button, connected. Chinese UI by default, bug reports fixed in a release within 24 hours (10/28–10/30 with 4 releases back to back), and the "bypass mainland" rules from v2rayN carried straight over.
  4. Timing: around 2026, anti-blocking WARP cores and scanners such as warpscout (July) and Aether (July) appeared. AmneziaWG/MASQUE made WARP connectable in China again. The author packaged these new open-source engines into a Chinese GUI.
  5. Stars don't equal usage: roughly 4,600 downloads, far more than 340 stars. Most stars were clicked by video viewers on the way out.

Differentiation

Versus similar tools like Oblivion: Chinese-user orientation + multiple exits (WARP + VPN Gate home broadband + Psiphon) + "bypass mainland" routing + one-click updates. But what actually made it take off isn't the differentiation. It's that the author owns a matching YouTube audience. The same author's gate and freesub have higher star counts and are technically simpler, which shows the channel is doing the work. The differentiator (home-broadband exits) mainly gave the videos a selling-point title.

Visibility and copycats

  • A small circle: the YouTube audience of Chinese circumvention/free-tools communities and the author's Telegram group. No X, HN, or media coverage.
  • Copycats/re-uploads: mirror repos with the same name have already appeared: Kafurtan/xehn, gjzhcc/xehn, heshixian98-one/xehn, chinafight/xehn-sw- (each 1 stars, created 10/27–10/29). The launch popup says "Resale prohibited", and the blog says "bought a resold version from a paid channel", so people are already reselling it.

Takeaways

  • A closed loop of "open-source repo + YouTube tutorials + Blogger articles + Telegram group." The repo is the landing page for the video, issues extend the video comments, and each release is the next video's material.
  • Packaging other people's freshly released open-source engines (warpscout, Aether) into a GUI for beginners, to grab the "world first" window.
  • The remote control code and launch notice are a counter to resale.

Uncertain

  • Whether they ran YouTube ads or other creators shared it is unverified. Telegram group size was not checked.
  • Remote kill switch, unsigned and needing admin rights (the video itself warns "best installed on a machine with no important accounts") may limit word-of-mouth spread. Legal risk (circumvention tools) could get the repo taken down.
  • Whether the "beat the official client" 17K video is XEHN's predecessor rests on timing and feature descriptions. Not verified frame by frame.
