Everyone else is cleaning Android TVs. He only does Fire TV: how dumbtv carved out a spot in the "AI cleans your TV" wave
What it is A cleanup kit for Amazon Fire TV. Agents like Claude Code follow the instructions in the repo, use ADB without root to turn off ads, screen recognition, and telemetry, swap in a clean 95 KB home screen, and every step can be undone.
Why it blew up In mid-October, "hacking my TV with Claude Code" went viral on X. The author posted from an account with 52k followers, and within two days TechCrunch cited two repos as examples, one of them this one. Everyone else was building for Android TV; it was the only one focused on Fire TV.
CHow you could follow it Don't copy the TV angle. Copy the method: within 48 hours of the next hot topic, pick the platform with the most users that the leaders haven't covered, and build "instructions an agent can read + a read-only preflight check + one-click revert + a user-submitted device list", then reference the viral post when you launch.

In 2026 October 17, developer Muzzammil Yasin Sabuwala (@DevMuzzammil on X, 52k followers) found the Fire TV at home sluggish: menus were slow, most of the home screen was ads, and only 129 MB of free memory was left. He had a coding agent clean it up over ADB, posted "the great cleanup has begun", and got 455k views. The comments asked for the script, so the next day he created the repo and said "just point your agent at this repo". The post's bookmarks (6,735) outnumber its likes (5,937). 19 days later the repo had 1,956 stars and 213 forks. That number ranks about fifth in this wave of projects. What's worth noting is how it found its position: everyone else cleaned Android TVs, and it only did Fire TV.
What it is
dumbtv is a cleanup kit for Amazon Fire TV (streaming sticks, Cube, Fire TV Edition TVs). It doesn't require root, and every step can be undone. Turn on ADB debugging on the TV, clone the repo on your computer, and tell Claude Code, Codex, or Cursor "clean up my Fire TV, the IP is ...". The agent then follows the AGENTS.md in the repo step by step: it runs a read-only check first and tells you what it will change, asks a few questions (keep Prime Video? keep Alexa? replace the home screen?), and confirms before each step.
Results: about 65 Amazon packages are disabled, including ad placements, ACR (screen recognition of what you're watching), telemetry, and A/B experiments. For the few things Amazon won't let you disable, an open-source DNS filter on the TV blocks their telemetry and automatic updates. The home screen is replaced with one the author wrote, 95 KB, with no network permissions, showing only a clock, your apps, and HDMI inputs. If you don't want to use AI, the same steps are also written as shell scripts.
Why now
He wasn't the spark. In October 16, Ryan Doyle (@doooyle, 6k followers) posted "today I hacked my TV with Claude Code", which got 4.5M views. A speed-comparison video the next day got 3.09M views. On day 17, the cleanyourtv author posted "cleaning my parents' TV", a bigger hit. "Vibe-coding your TV" became a topic overnight.
The dumbtv launch-hype post quoted Doyle's tweet, and the repo went up the next day. On Oct 19, TechCrunch ran "People are using AI to make their smart TVs dumb again," using only two repos as examples: cleanyourtv and dumbtv. It opened with dumbtv's slogan, "Your TV should only do the thing you paid for." The author also gave an interview, saying it was built with DeepSeek V4.1 Flash plus Claude Opus / Sonnet 5.5. The Verge, TechRadar, Tom's Guide, Gizmodo, and XDA followed. The repo's press list shows 150+ articles across 30+ countries.
Stars followed the press coverage:
| Date | Stars (GitHub, per day) | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| 10-18 | 55 | repo created, X launch post |
| 10-20 | 402 | named by TechCrunch the day before, picked up by Techmeme |
| 10-21 | 862 | Single-day +460, peak |
| 10-22 | 1,111 | relayed by media in other countries |
| 11-06 | 1,956 / 213 fork | +18 that day; +204 over the last 7 days; +493 over the first 7 days |
Where users come from
Mainly three channels, ranked by weight:
The author's own X account. The two posts together got 800k views. The launch post got more bookmarks than likes, so people were saving it to come back and follow the steps, not just scrolling past.
Media. After TechCrunch named it, most follow-up coverage relayed TechCrunch, and the name kept getting carried forward. The author also promoted it: the README header shows logos from TechCrunch, TechRadar and other outlets, and the site has a press contact. I didn't see a Hacker News post.
Short video and tutorials. On TikTok, @nelsonxlee posted a "how to get the TV remote debloat tutorial" video with 99k views, and also wrote a dumbtv tutorial on Substack. Most other big-account videos covered cleanyourtv or just talked about "Claude hacking TVs" in general.
Once stars climbed, what kept people around was the device catalog. Every Fire TV model needs a slightly different package, so the repo asks users to run it and submit their model as a PR. As of 11-06, the repo had roughly 175 issues and PRs, most of them "catalog: [model]" entries, with 30 contributors. The desktop installer had about 7,000 cumulative downloads across 9 releases (GitHub, 11-06). Treat the 7,000 as a floor on installs, since some people built from source.
Why it got a slice
Everyone else in the same wave went after Android TV, while dumbtv was the only one built specifically for Fire OS. Fire TV is the platform with the most ads, and Amazon fights third-party home screens hardest there: newer Fire OS versions grab the HOME button back for Amazon's own launcher, and several of the repo's first-week commits were about working around that. It shipped adaptations for Fire OS 6, 7 and 8, wrote up each package, and added a separate Prime Video toggle (if you watch Prime, its video servers aren't blocked). Anyone searching "Fire TV" finds it, and TechCrunch only listed it separately because it was the Fire TV version.
The second reason was that the "safety" angle was easy to write about. At the time, the press was running stories about AI edits bricking TVs. TechCrunch's closing lines mention someone who bricked an Android TV and someone who got stuck halfway through a Fire TV mod. dumbtv's read-only preflight check, per-step confirmation, list of packages that must not be stopped, and one-click restore gave reporters a "safe version" they could write about.
But don't credit it all to differentiation. WB2024/firestrip, a Fire TV ADB debloat tool doing the same thing, launched five months earlier in May and only reached 80 stars. cleanyourtv, which covers all Android TVs, has 27x as many stars. Focusing on Fire TV gave dumbtv its own niche, but most of the stars came from the topic, the author's following, and press pickup.
Who it's competing with
| Project | Scale (GitHub, 11-06) | How it differs from dumbtv |
|---|---|---|
| Gathin23/cleanyourtv | 52,550 stars | One of the sources, a day earlier; any Android / Google TV, Apple TV–style home screen, and has already spun off a phone app and a webOS version |
| pengchujin/aerial-tv | 9,951 stars | Chinese TVs like Xiaomi and TCL |
| simbasjungles/free-my-tv | 5,917 stars | Google TV + LG webOS + Samsung Tizen, doesn't touch Fire OS |
| Ansub/tv-detox | 2,192 stars | Created the same day; speeds up older Android TVs; star curve almost in sync |
| man15h/tellyscope, mihirgupta0900/tv-home | 1,539 / 735 stars | One is operated from a phone instead of a computer; the other is a different developer quoted in the TechCrunch piece |
| WB2024/firestrip | 80 stars | Did the same thing five months earlier but missed the moment |
| Projectivy, FLauncher and other launcher replacements | Years | Only swaps the launcher; doesn't turn off telemetry or ACR; Fire OS takes the HOME button back |
Since Oct 10, about 40 repos were created with TV or launcher keywords and passed 200 stars. Some people argue you don't need a repo at all: Doyle himself just asked Claude to make the changes, and PCMag and How-To Geek both wrote "you don't need AI" pieces.
Is there room left in this wave?
The peak has passed. dumbtv's weekly star growth dropped from 493 to 204, and single-day gains are now between 20 and 30. Android TV, Fire TV, Samsung, LG and Chinese TV brands all have dedicated versions by now, and major tech outlets in several countries have covered the topic. It is also expanding: the device catalog already includes non-Amazon Android devices like Chromecast with Google TV and Hisense Google TV.
One unverified variable: Amazon's newer Fire TV hardware is starting to move to Vega OS, which isn't Android-based. If the main models migrate, the ADB approach may stop working, and Fire OS-specific tools would lose ground (inference).
If it were you
Bottom line: The TV topic has no room left. What's worth learning is its two moves: first, pick the slice inside a hot trend that the big projects haven't covered; second, turn "AI breaking things" into "safe and reversible." Use both the next time a trend breaks.
- Who it fits: developers with tens of thousands of real followers on X or elsewhere, who own a device the trend hasn't covered and can ship a working repo the same day.
- Who it doesn't fit: people without their own distribution. For the same feature, firestrip got only 80 stars in its first five months. A large share of dumbtv's stars came from the author's 52k-follower account and the TechCrunch mention, and followers don't get those.
- How to do it: When a trend starts, first check which platforms and models the big projects already cover, then pick the leftover slice with the most users and the most frustration (this time, Fire TV). Structure the repo like dumbtv: an AGENTS.md for agents to read, a read-only preflight check, per-step confirmation, a do-not-touch list, and one-click restore, plus a script for people who don't use AI. Then open a device catalog and ask users to submit their model as a PR.
- How to get users: Tease the launch by quoting the viral post, then ship the next day. Write the launch post so it reads as a single line people can follow: "point your agent at this repo." Put a slogan at the top of the README that a reporter can quote directly. When press picks it up, link it in the README, and make yourself available for interviews.
- Timing: within 48 hours of the trend starting. The projects created in the same 48-hour window as dumbtv all caught this wave; repos that came a week later mostly stalled at a few hundred stars.
- Signs you misread it: If nobody in the press or large accounts mentions your slice within 48 hours, or if a major project covers the platform within a week, the slice isn't big enough. Stop putting resources into it and go back to building a tool you can maintain long-term.

humblemuzzu/dumbtv: why it took off
Channel: GitHub · repo built 2026-10-18 · as of 2026-11-06:1,956 stars / 213 forks (our GitHub repo_profile). One line: uses ADB (no root, one-click revert) to turn off ads, ACR fingerprinting, telemetry, and the Amazon home screen on a Fire TV, and replaces it with the author's own 95 KB open-source launcher. Recommended usage: point Claude Code / Codex at this repo and let the agent follow AGENTS.md.
1. Verdict
dumbtv didn't appear on its own. It was one participant in the wave of "use AI coding agents to hack your own smart TV" that ran through X in mid-October 2026. Its growth came from three things stacking together:
- Platform event / timing: On 2026-10-16, Ryan Doyle (@doooyle, 6k followers) posted "Hacked my TV with Claude Code today," which got 4.5M views. The next day's speed-comparison video got 27k likes and 3.09M views (via the fxtwitter API, 2026-11-06). "Vibe-coding your TV" became a topic overnight.
- The author's own X account: @DevMuzzammil has 52k followers. 10-17 He quoted Doyle's post with "the great debloating… revolution has begun" (2,666 likes, 455k views, 2,394 bookmarks), 10-18 then posted "introducing dumbtv… just point your agent to this repo" (5,937 likes, 355k views, 6,735 bookmarks. More bookmarks than likes means people are saving it to come back to).
- Media named it: On 10-19, TechCrunch's "People are using AI to make their smart TVs dumb again" covered dumbtv and cleanyourtv as the two representative approaches. The Verge, CBC, TechRadar, Tom's Guide, Gizmodo, XDA and others followed. The repo's docs/PRESS.md lists 150+ articles across 30+ countries. The star curve matched this rhythm: 10-18 55 → 10-20 402 → 10-21 862 (+460 in a single day, the peak) → 10-22 1,111, then it settled to around 30 per day.
It held its place in the wave by targeting one niche, Fire TV: the leading cleanyourtv (52.5k stars), free-my-tv, tv-detox and aerial-tv all focused on Android/Google TV, webOS, Tizen and Chinese TV brands, while dumbtv was the only one that went deep on Fire OS (Amazon's own Fire TV sticks, Cube and Fire TV Edition TVs). Judged by star count, though, it ranks about fifth in this wave. It's a niche version lifted by the wave, not the wave itself.

3. Growth tactics (evidence)
| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed? |
|---|---|---|
| Author's own X account (52k followers) posted twice | 10-17 teaser post 455k views; 10-18 launch post 355k views, 5,937 likes, 6,735 bookmarks (fxtwitter API) | Confirmed |
| Rode an existing viral topic on X | The teaser directly quoted @doooyle's viral video (3.09M views); the whole "vibe-code your TV" topic was kicked off by Doyle 10-16 | Confirmed |
| Tech media coverage clustered | TechCrunch 10-19 named it; docs/PRESS.md lists 150+ articles / 30+ countries; Techmeme 10-20 indexed it | Confirmed |
| Author ran media outreach proactively | The author did a TechCrunch interview (the article quotes him, written with DeepSeek V4.1 Flash + Claude Opus/Sonnet 5.5); PRESS.md and dumbtv.org/help have a "Press" entry; the README header shows TechCrunch/TechRadar logos as social proof | Confirmed |
| Hacker News | Our hackernews library has no dumbtv post itself; a contemporaneous "An ad-free Android TV" scored 444 points, the TechCrunch piece scored 39 | Confirmed it never went straight to HN |
| TikTok / YouTube amplification | TikHub search for dumbtv: @nelsonxlee's "comment TV setup tutorial" video 99k views (he also wrote a Substack dumbtv guide), @quickfinesse 14k views; most larger videos cover cleanyourtv or generic "Claude fixes your black TV" | Partially confirmed (whether each names dumbtv wasn't checked one by one) |
| Community device reports create retention | The repo has about 175 issues/PRs, many user-submitted "catalog: some TV model" PRs; 30 contributors; launcher APK across 9 versions has roughly 7,000 cumulative downloads (GitHub API, 2026-11-06) | Confirmed |
| Aggregator listings | Listed by unshittify.dev (issue 2026-11-05) | Confirmed |
4. Why it took off
- The topic blew up first; it was an early ready-made answer. 10-16 Doyle's video lit the demand, 10-17/18 the author shipped a working repo; several projects built within the same 48 hours (cleanyourtv 10-17, tv-detox 10-18, tv-home 10-18, dumbtv 10-18) all caught the wave, and projects that came a week later mostly stalled at a few hundred stars.
- The author's X following (50k) drove distribution; the launch post got more bookmarks than likes, suggesting people were saving it to actually use.
- TechCrunch named it. The article only featured two repos as examples, and dumbtv was one; 150 later articles largely rehashed TechCrunch, so the name kept getting repeated.
- It hit a long-running grievance: paying for a TV that then shows you ads and spies on you through ACR. Fire TV is also where ads are heaviest and where Amazon pushes back hardest on replacement launchers (newer Fire OS versions pull HOME back to Amazon's desktop, and several issues in the repo are about fixing that).
- It makes "let AI modify the system" controllable: AGENTS.md contract, read-only preflight checks, confirmation at each step, a list of packages that can't be disabled, DNS filtering, one-click restore. Media (SiliconSnark, How-To Geek) were already discussing "AI bricks your black TV," so dumbtv's "safe version" story was easy to write.
5. Differentiation
- Fire OS specialization: the other top projects target Android/Google TV, while dumbtv has notes on about 50–65 Fire OS packages (dumbtv.org/blocked), handling that differs across Fire OS 6/7/8, a device model catalog (AFTKRT, AFTTI43, etc.), and handling of Amazon-specific toggles like whether Prime Video keeps working.
- Not just a launcher swap; it also cuts telemetry: install personalDNSfilter on the TV to block about 400 Amazon telemetry / ad / update domains, and cut the network for packages that can't be disabled.
- Ships a tiny open-source desktop (95 KB, pure Java, no network permission) and keeps iterating on it (icon packs, wallpapers, multiple languages).
- Agent-first, but runnable by hand: provides both AGENTS.md and shell scripts.
Is this why it took off? Partly. Differentiation gave it its own niche in the wave (people searching "Fire TV" land on it, and TechCrunch listed it separately because it's the Fire TV version); but the traffic itself came from the topic, the author's following, and media, not from the differentiation. Evidence: firestrip, which did Fire TV ADB debloating five months earlier, stalled at 80 stars, while the broader-Android cleanyourtv got 27 times the traction. Broader device coverage won over a narrower approach. Stars are up 204 in the last 7 days and 493 last week, so it's cooling off. It's now expanding into Android TV (the catalog already includes Chromecast with Google TV, Hisense Google TV, and Vestel).
6. How many people see it
Already widely covered: TechCrunch, The Verge, CBC and 150+ other outlets, with the author's launch post at 350k views. No revenue involved (open source, the author has not charged for anything; the README says "Rather not do it yourself? Tell us about your TV and we will help", which may be a door to a done-for-you service later, unverified). The whole "AI removes TV ads" opportunity is already crowded: in our database, roughly 40 repos created after 10-10, tagged with TV/launcher keywords and at 200+ stars.
VII. What to take away
- Repo as agent task brief: AGENTS.md + scripts; the user just says "Clean up my Fire TV, IP is …". While agents are going mainstream, this kind of "open-source solution for agents" can convert straight from a single X post.
- Ship a usable version within 48 hours of the viral topic, and pick a niche no one else covers (Fire TV).
- Use "safe and reversible" to counter the press's "AI breaks your stuff" angle, so even the negative coverage becomes exposure.
- Work with the press proactively and put the coverage wall at the top of the README, then use a device-catalog PR to get users contributing and sticking around.
- Next space: Roku, Samsung Tizen and LG webOS versions of the Fire TV "specialist" tool already exist; what may still be open is a "no-computer done-for-you service" or paid remote installation.
VIII. Unknowns
- Stars only show interest, not real installs. The launcher APK's ~7,000 downloads is a lower-bound reference (scripts may also run from local builds).
- How many TikTok/YouTube videos are specifically about dumbtv was not checked one by one.
- Whether the author will monetize (done-for-you service, donations) is unverified.
- Whether this method still works on Amazon's new Vega OS (non-Android) devices is unverified. If Fire TV moves to a non-Android OS, the moat of a Fire OS-specialist tool shrinks.
